Why does raiding feel so unfriendly?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Draknar.5748

My opinion on raids is that they are unnecessarily difficult. Not necessarily from the actual fights but the time limit that they put on them. It has really created a high barrier to entry for the majority of players. Most of the fights would be doable (with some practice) if not for the timers as well. It has created a pretty poor community where:

a) Players are forced into meta builds/comps simply to meet the time allotment. So in order to even be considered for a raid, players may have to completely re-outfit themselves to hope to clear even the first boss. Players that are in full Ascended conceivably contribute very little depending on their builds. That sucks.

b) A clear divide between raiders and the rest of the PvE community is created.

c) Tolerance for new players learning a raid is non-existent these days. Alienated people from even attempting it.

You really end up needing a dedicated raid group, or a pug filled with experienced players. You can’t just casually round up 10 guildies and hope to kill even the first raid boss. That’s pretty crappy considering this game is sorta designed to have a low barrier to entry on pretty much everything else.

I’m all for difficult raids, but make it on technical abilities like dodging and placements (which they do already as well) and remove the time constraints.

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

OP, it sounds like you’re the kind of person who just wants to blindly follow nav points without actually exploring anything (which this game already provides you with to some extent).

The best way to experience this game is simply to explore. Pick a zone that’s within your level range, then wander around. Do hearts that you come across, do events you come across. There are no rules. There are no “right” hearts or events to do first, just do whatever you come across.

There should be no reason to ask “which hearts should I be doing”.

I think people got a little bit too used to the WoW way of playing MMOs where you open up your questlog, mark the quest, blindly follow wherever it tells you to go, kill whatever is highlighted, then return to wherever the arrow is telling you to go, all the while skipping every bit of dialog and text as quickly as possible.

That’s not how GW2 is meant to be played.

It’s more open than that. You can level up doing literally anything in this game. Just take your time and wander around exploring areas and you’ll progress without issue.

Also know that you can /wiki while in game to look up anything you don’t understand.

Confused about Ascended gear? Type /wiki Ascended gear into the chat bar. Easy.

Since we are ranting, how about the fact that they removed the moderately-useful boosters, but you still get tomes of knowledge and transmutation charges?!

Remove those stupid tomes and at least bump the transmutation charges to 10, not a measly 1.

I’m so sick of tomes, and I’m so sick of birthday level boosters. I can tell you that those of us that hit the 4 year mark have absolutely no use for a booster that boosts a character to level 40. That’s basically like giving us 40 tomes. I have stacks upon stacks of tomes. I will quite literally never have to level a character to 80 manually again, if I planned to have more characters than the 16 I already have…

Hopefully 5yr+ birthday rewards will skip the useless level booster. Titles, skins, 24hr birthday booster, unique gimmicky items, those are great, keep those coming. But god I can’t stand tomes and those level boosters anymore.

races by class

I am gonna guess that 97% of the gw2 community is male. Now, let’s talk about the most common races for each class.

warrior : human female

guardian : human female

rev : human female

theif : human female

engineer : human female

ranger : human female

mes : human female

ele : human female

necro : human female

That’s quite the bold claim. Just using my guild as a reference, which has roughly 150 active members, I’d estimate a solid 40% of them are female players. Not just supposed female players, but real female players, who get on voice chat and everything.

Ironically a good % of them play male characters. So I don’t even know what to believe anymore.

This affects you personally….how, exactly?

Who cares if people want to farm. Let them farm. You can still log in every day and do the exact same things you’ve been doing.

2. Timed maps. Dragons stand I think was the worse design I personally ever saw any game developer come up with. 2 hour meta event? Any adult does not have time for things like that after getting home from work yet alone getting into a map. Silverwastes was designed wonderfully to the fact you can taxi people in easier, the idea was more simple and could complete the meta with in a playable duration for most people.

I thought this at first too. But I’ve successfully done the meta from complete start to finish in about an hour. Plus sometimes I’ll zone into a map with no one on it, check Open World LFG, see people asking for bodies in an active map, join up, and already be at the Tower event right before the Mordremoth fight. That’s exactly what happened last night, in fact. Was easy loot and XP.

DS is one of my favorite maps quite honestly. If I can’t get into one with an active meta, I go to Auric Basin, my 2nd favorite.

People with 100k gold

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Draknar.5748

Draknar.5748

I am not lazy. I am actually working hard for my gold in GW2 (which is sad in itself). But with this stuff going on it will be forever impossible for me (and 99% of players) to ever catch up. I can never make enough gold because I can only do it slowly and by the time I get close to buying what I want it gets bought up and relisted at 2 or 3 times the price.

Catch up to what? If you can afford the things you need, then who cares that someone else has more than you?

What is it that you want to buy so badly? There’s no reason you need 100,000 gold. Nothing in this game requires that. Anyone who plays even 10hrs/week can easily amass 60-100g/week (depending on how driven you are—I use 10hrs/week because that’s about all I play and that’s how much I typically make these days).

That’s the problem with kids these days. They think "I work hard (which I’m sure “hard” is a complete exaggeration), I should be making as much as the richest guy, that’s not FAIR!" These are the same people that believe the government should give them everything.

The daily alone is a guaranteed 14g/week. Throw in ascended crafting every day, fractals dailies, dungeon running, heck even just HoT meta for the loot to salvage and sell, world boss farming, T6 mats from laurels, the list goes on and on.

At this point in the game there’s no reason not to be making enough gold each week to cover everything you want. You may have to save up for a bit to get some high priced item, but that’s normal.

This isn’t a competition. Focus on yourself and not on what a few have that you don’t.

I found the easiest way to get those points in HoT was to do the meta events. Find an active map in LFG—>Open World —>choose map, then jump in on the events. You will get lots of XP and loot and will get you a good bit of mastery points (you get MPs from completing parts of the meta, not just from MPs that are on the map!), plus it will likely bring you close to a MP you need and all of the mobs will be dead so you can investigate how to get them (or heck even ask people around you at that point) without having to run away from enemies.

Unplayable Solo

Draknar.5748

If my non-gamer wife can solo in HoT maps (not including Tangled Depths, god that map is a maze), then so can you.

Just find events. It’s literally that simple. There are always events going on, and they are very rarely empty. Maybe it’s because you are in Australia so your play times are at non-peak hours so maps are dead? There are a lot of Group Events in HoT, so you can’t really solo them, but when I’m playing at my usual 8pm-10pm EST, I don’t think I’ve ever had to do an event solo.

Just log in, go to a map in HoT, pull up LFG —> Open World —>Map you’re in, look to see if there are any taxis to an active map, join squad, join map, (drop squad, if you want, but no sense in it), do events, get loot and XP.

If your play times are the equivalent of 3am-9am on the server you’re on, then I don’t know what to tell you. Most people don’t play during those times.

XP for masteries being wasted

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Draknar.5748

Draknar.5748

Speaking of “masteries”—————-why does the system operate differently in Tyria than in HoT?? In HoT, mastery points can be gained character-by-character, thus allowing the account to master all of the tracks. In Tyria, once a “mastery point” has been gained, that’s it!!———-and that means there are NOT enough available “mastery points” to allow for the tracks to be completed————————-UNLESS the player (NOT the character(s)) elects to play “fractals” and/or “dungeons” and/or PvP. For TOO MANY of us, group play is NOT a viable option—- ok when there’s a crowd that wants to do the same thing—————not so good otherwise. This includes WvW by the way———too often one sees a “follow the leader” group blindly going from a start point to ?? without rhyme or reason.
I’d much prefer having “mastery points” collectible by the character (limited as it is in HoT for follow-on characters) in Tyria as well.

Ummmm no …….
Once an account has gotten a MP in either Core or HoT it can no longer be obtained by a different char. I know this for a fact since my other half was in HoT with a new char just this morning maybe about 2 hours ago and went to a new spot to her with a MP and a HP. Went to commune the MP and it said “nope you already have it” while the HP was still doable since the HP are per char.

No, that’s not “quite” right in HOT. Most of the “commune” points CAN be achieved and mastery points received by multiple characters on an account ( in HoT only). This action does NOT work in the Core (and it should). Agreed, “named” mastery points are achievable ONCE per account in both HoT and Core.

You are incorrect. You are clearly confusing Hero Points and Mastery Points. MPs are account bound and cannot be gained more than once. Hero Points are character specific and can be grabbed by each character. Some HPs are commune points, most MPs are commune points.

But I am 100% sure that once you grab a MP in HoT maps, that no other character can also grab it (and get credit for it, that is).

I know this because I just made a new character that I’ve started HoT zones with and all of the MPs are already completed in the map.

Get rid of guld repesentation

I get why some people are against guild representation, but I also see the benefit to it.

If GW2 is a game you like to play in between other MMOs as you try to find a long lasting MMO home (if that’s even something you want), sure who cares what guild you’re in. You want to be in as many different ones as possible, with as many people as possible.

But for guilds that have been around from the start and plan to be around GW2 to the bitter end, having a guild full of members that represent helps to build a lasting community for the long haul. It creates a sense of pride, especially as you see the guild grow. Some people are looking for that. They are looking for a solid community that could even span multiple games. Representation is crucial for this. It’s not for everyone and that’s fine. No one can force you to represent a guild 100%. But there are certainly people that like it and like what it brings to the table.

Even when you learn the trap locations, there are legitimately hard jumps you need to make where failing will send you back a solid 10min-15min. Or areas where you need precise timing and positioning. How is that not hard? What IS hard then? By your definition nothing is hard then because every game boils down to putting time into learning the mechanics and muscle memory.

I’m well aware of the poem The Raven.

But the raven in the poem isn’t actually called Quoth, whereas the one in Discworld is (which is itself a reference to the one in the poem), and is probably in my top ten favourite Discworld characters, which is saying something.

But that’s why I said I like to assume it’s a Discworld reference. I haven’t asked everyone using it where they got the name from and there are huge numbers of references to that poem. (Which then lead to people associating ravens with the words quoth and nevermore without even knowing why.) I don’t actually have any idea if they’re referencing the poem or Discworld or the Simpsons Halloween Special or what.

If someone is referencing the Simpsons special, then they are referencing the poem, as it was a reading of the poem.

I’m personally not familiar with Discworld. My first thought was the Poe poem. It was clever the first time I saw it. Now it’s not so much.

Shatterer Break Bar - A bit too much

I would dare say that 75% of GW2 players do not understand break bars or know how they are supposed to break it. I discovered this when raiding. We call out for people to break the bar and it’s like 2 of us even moving it. Then afterwards we ask the players what skills they are using to break the bar and it’s like “uhhhh, huh?”.

I’m not even kidding, most people don’t even understand which CC effects damage the break-bar or even know their class has skills that can do CC.

Most people will auto attack or go through their standard rotation like they are doing a heart or something.

PSA: in-game type /wiki break bar in your chat bar and hit enter. Read all about how break bar works and how YOU can reduce it. It may require changing one of your weapons so you can do it more efficiently. Adapt.

EDIT: And I’m not saying that the break bar doesn’t have a ton of HP, all I’m really saying is that it won’t be broken by 5-10% of the players using their hard CC, it will require everyone using hard CC at the same time, which will require educating people on break bars.

I think another big reason for the complaints across the board with anything really is:

People typically don’t like change. If someone has to do something different than what they were doing before, they will resist it and if it bothers them enough become vocal about it.

Some people don’t mind change and will go with the flow. But any time there’s even a mild change to something, you better believe someone will complain about it.

Pro players manipulating matches, tt is hardly watched by anyone, they refuse to do anything about purposeful trolling. I am sorry but this is not Esports not even close.

I don’t think you understand how a marketing budget works. That money is already earmarked for marketing. Either it goes towards eSports promotion or it goes towards banner ads, displays, print advertising, events, pretty much anything marketing related. It does not take away from development budgets, it is completely separate.

Clearly they felt that some portion of their marketing budget should go towards promoting their attempt at eSports. There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s completely normal. They want to try to make it a legit eSport, so marketing funds will be required. Pretty standard procedure here.

Before you start to white knight the idea

Maybe you can remove this bit of rhetoric. It’s not “white knighting” to disagree or even disapprove of an idea.

Seriously. Since when did disagreeing in general suddenly become white knighting.

Permanent "Repair Canister"

Is there an easily accessible anvil in the raid? Because off hand, that’s the only place I can think of where a permanent repair canister is of real use. Not wishing to take a few seconds to use a free anvil on a regular map every few days isn’t something that’s going to inspire a lot of people to pay 700 to 1000 gems.

Yes there is a very accessible anvil in raids.

The item itself would serve very little purpose. I personally wouldn’t even bother, but it’s not like they would have to produce or inventory anything. They would just take an item that already exists and make it unlimited use. Not sure what development time on that would be, but I feel like if they could sell even 20 of them that it would have paid for itself.

Just another option for people that want ultimate convenience.

OP didn’t say he couldn’t go to an anvil, nor that there aren’t copious amounts of anvils that he could go to. He’s saying he will pay money to not have to ever go to an anvil again.

I’m honestly confused as to how you didn’t know that it was a requirement prior to starting. Doesn’t it tell you what every requirement is on the collectibles tab? If it doesn’t, a simple google search for GW2 + Dark Harvest yields exactly what is needed to complete the sword.

That’s like starting to craft a legendary, getting to the end and saying “Wait, I need a precursor to finish my legendary? What the heck!”

Almost every unique item in every MMO is gated behind something. Otherwise you would go to a merchant and buy it. Either it will be gated behind a specific dungeon, or specific boss, or specific achievement, or specific crafting recipe, or really anything. I don’t really see anything out of the ordinary here. GW2 just has a “scavenger” hunt system to get items.

The grind in this game has always been cosmetics.

Which is why I’ve always said Anet have been absolute geniuses with their game and cash shop.

How often do you hear “it’s only cosmetic” in ANY game? It’s brilliant, no one seems to care.

Because it is only cosmetic. Why would anyone care?

ok am i doing this wrong or is the the stupidest thing iv ever seen

ok the GW2 team kindly gave me back a skin that had vanished and that was great of them but when i go to use it it says not for your profession now this is a skin that im paying twice for to use once to buy the skin then to buy transmog charges to use it

soo why in the hell is it profession locked this is clearly a mage outfit yet i can only use it on a thief or ranger why would ether of them use this style thief would be seen from a mile away this is perfect for my mage but i cant use it

now am i doing it wrong or is this something that needs to be changed by GW2 devs

Let’s see:

Wide brim hat with feathers.
Animal/beast type skull on shoulder.
Leather straps over a leather trenchcoat.
Leather pouches on said trenchcoat.

That there is a full-on standard issue medium outfit with flames.

You, sir, need to get your eyes checked.

Pact Commanders Race

What are you talking about? What pact commander? The player character is the pact commander. I don’t get this silly topic. There is no canonical race, and that is the point of GW2 story narration.

He’s saying if you watch the S1 recap, it doesn’t automatically put your player character in there, it uses a default character, which is a female Norn, and the argument is of course that since she is the default used in a story recap, then clearly that must be the true pact commander.

Is it worth it?

Is it truly worth it to spend hundreds of gold on crafting, and then 100s of gold on full ascended? Do you guys think it’s better to craft, or take the long route and do fractal dailies/raids till you get them?

I crafted my first set. Luckily I had quite a bit of materials saved up already, so I would say the entire process of leveling up the crafts and crafting the gear was around 250g, which by today’s standards is not that much money.

That said, my second set was from fractals almost exclusively 5/6 pieces I got from fractals and got impatient on the last one. Half of those pieces were from the new daily fractal chests (the Champion chest 50+ one). In the process of getting those pieces I ended up with around 500g just from fractals. Not sure how many fractal runs it took me, though, I seriously lose track. I’d say I did at least 20 of the dailies, but could be more ( I would do every one of them—but champion and veteran are the key ones, assuming you don’t need pages anymore). You aren’t guaranteed what armor piece you get however. I got multiple of the same here and there.

I vote fractals if you aren’t in a hurry. You will make good money doing the dailies, which will get you closer to being able to simply buy it if you aren’t being favored by the RNG gods.

What to do when you first hit Level 80?

I find myself logging in and not knowing what to do, I know that there are plenty of things to do in this game, but I want to know what to do first. Do I finish the Maguuma Story first? Do I try to get Ascended gear? I’m extremely confused and would like detailed advice. Also forgot I’m an 80 Elementalist running around with full Berserker and the only ascended pieces I have are my jewelry.

Thanks in advance.

There’s no correct answer to this question since the GW2 end-game sort of branches out into categories.

It depends on what your tastes are.

For me I spend most of my time in fractals. When I’m not in fractals I’m either in HoT working on leveling up my masteries (through the map meta events), doing the raid, or wandering around WvW.

I honestly suggest trying a bit of everything.

I good place to start to get some kind of direction are the class collections that give you ascended weapons. If you don’t want to craft an ascended weapon its a nice (albeit fairly gated) way to get one. At the very least it will give you an idea of what masteries to work on.
