Regardless of the score deciding where servers rank, closer scores keep players playing, period.
+1
Also consider the following:
Its thursday, scores are near tied. But your fort has been capped for over 3 days and so has their garrison on their BL. They are both fully upgraded.
If either server manages to cap the other servers garision while pops are competative it might give enough points for your server to win the matchup.
Puts lot more volitility into the scores near the end, and I think the better server will win.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Aurainsoph, I do not think thats an option.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
thats a fair point Nabrok, but if you read what I posted you would understand the multiplier does not help low pop servers win. I know its a bit long, but ill tl’dr that part here: Basically because the lower population servers have trouble taking and holding objectives multipling their score for the stuff they currently hold has a negligable effect on the overall score. Compare the Adjusted and Current pie charts for the green team, the difference with the multiplier applied is only ~296.
Negligeable.
Part of the problem of the ranking system is when a server gets 500k points it goes up 2-4 placings and then gets dominated next week because of the snowballing effect of the score right now. The multiplier curbs that quite a bit which will prevent a server from jumping up so fast only to get knocked down quickly in the next week just because their opponents didnt show up.
The muliplier curbs the top end, but doesnt help the lower population win at all.
Also the muliplier stays in to keep the bonus’s in check. So if you cap everything when the other server is mostly offline you wont get a huge number of bonus points for it.

THIS IS KAINENG
yeah, thats what it is.

If you like the suggested bonus system and muliplier, please +1 the thread.
To Anet: If you want the raw data and model I can provide that.
To Community: bumps and +1’s welcome.

A blowout, just what i wanted. Server 2 clearly won this about 3-4 days in, making the rest of the days a lame duck situation of unfunness that people generally dont like to participate in.
Next I recorded population difference and assigned a multiplier per 15 minute interval. Every 10 people a server outpopped the other two combined their multiplier went down 10%. For every 10 people you were outmanned your multiplier went up 10%.
So if server 1 had 150 people, server 2 50 and server 3 50, server 1 would get 50% of its points
Server 2 would get 100% increase in point gain same with server 3.
The lower bound is 10%, so a server cant start losing points for holding territory.
There is no upper bound.
Basically an interesting thing happened that I honestly didnt expect. Because the model was predicting that an overpopulated server would quickly take the map, the bonus had little effect in increasing the score of the other two servers. It did however lower the score of the oceanic server by almost 10k.
Results:
Server1: 28047.5
Server2: 43072.5
Server3: 17544.5
Interesting right? So putting in a multiplier seems to not effect the standing as much as we would like. Its still a blowout. Even though we made PvD worth much less points it didnt really change the outcomes all that much.
So I got to thinking (well I had the idea all along, but wanted to prove it)
What if we keep the multiplier in, because it does help tamp down on the server with the most out of prime population, but we implement a bonus system.
The rules of the bonus system:
After 1 hour for Forts and Towers and 30 minutes for camps, the longer they remain uncaptured by an enemy team per 15 minute interval the more bonus points they are worth.
After 1 hour Forts accumulate 20 bonus points per tick
Towers accumulate 8
Camps accumulate 4.
Bonus points are awarded when a different team captures the keep. The capturing team is granted the bonus ‘stockpile’ of points.
The bonus points accumulate slower than the actual points awarded. So it always a benifit to hold something as long as you can, as you get more points that way.
The result?
Here it is:
Server1: 46055.5
Server2: 50759.3
Server3: 36372.9
Bam, ‘night capping’ is eliminated. Server 1 is within 4k points for a single map at the end of the week, a catchable lead.
Also this system has a second benifit, it makes it more benificial for the 2 underpopulated servers to intentionally target the winning team. as the winning teams objectives are going to be worth more points if they were holding them overnight.
The system also make sure the point system remains fair in even population matchups
Bonus amounts can be told to and updated on the map so the player can easily see them. Multiplier can be built right into the score system. (multiplier also affects the bonus award)
Also as an aside if this model would expand to all 4 maps, it would calculate on a population of 166×4. The multi system is based on total server population in all maps in wvw, not one particular map. so you cant manipulate the system by leaving one map and jumping to another. Also I would use the rolling maximum population over the last 45 mins, to prevent organized guilds from jumping to pve to score more points before enough time has passed for a server with more wvw population to retake objectives.

I was doing lots of busywork this past week seeing if I can improve the scoring system that would actually help outmanned servers and ran into a couple interesting problems
Currently there is no day to day published metric of player populations
Currently there is no minute by minute ownership report to know who owns what.
So I had to get busy making a model. Because I was dealing with lots of numbers and wanted the model to map out an entire week of gameplay I went to modeling a single map using a bunch of assumptions.
Assumption 1: Minimum amount of people online to take a keep is 12 (note that you can do it with less than that, i know)
Assumption 2: you need at least 5 people for a tower (to put down a ram and build it, and take the lord)
Assumption 3: You need a minimum of 2 people to take a supply camp
Assumption 4: None of the servers will ‘give up’ and will try to participate in roughly the same amount each day +/- about 10%
Assumption 5: All servers are of ‘equal skill’
Now obviously its a bit of a stretch to say that the above can be true in all cases, but for the purpose of this excercise it is.
Ok now to develop the population curves.
Server 1, is a popular US server with no significant help from outside its timezone, it gets really full during primetime
Server 2, is a less popular US server barely reaching queue at primetime, but has an oceanic presense.
Server 3, is an underpopulated server stuck in the matchup.
I wrote a model, ran the numbers and recorded possession on one borderlands map per team at 15 minute intervals. The odds that a server would take something from another server increased if they outpopped them. I recorded how long something was under one teams control.
Under anet’s scoring system the ending scores for 1 week of play were:
Server1: 28,375
Server2: 51,225
Server3: 17,840
Note that this is the cumualtive score for only one map, not including sentries.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Odd Charr, I can see the entire landscape.
It might be blurring because of a different setting that isnt draw distance. I forget exactly what its called but if you turn it off it will ‘fix’ that.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Transfer to Devona’s Rest.
They fight every single day even though they were in last place and everyone I talk to talks about how much of a blast they have in WvW. I wouldnt focus on jumping to a winning server in the top bracket. Instead jump to DR and stay there. Why? If you transfer to a winning server this week in the top bracket, next week when the matchup isnt favorable your fair weather players will stop playing and the chronic server hoppers will abandon the server, putting you in the same situation you are now.
Transferring to Devona’s Rest will fix that problem as your guild will make an already competative server more competative, making it more fun for everyone involved. As an added bonus no one can brand you as a ‘coward’ to jumping to the weakest wvw server and making an impact.
So consider transferring to Devona’s Rest. Honestly I would transfer today, just see what its like. If you dont like it you can pick a different server. Try a few out. But I promise the bottom teir is simply the most fun right now and the most even.
Bandwagoners and fair weather players are ruining the top bracket to high levels of unfun.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
They had a post earlier explaining it. I’m too lazy to search for it now though :P
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Any server out there with an active wvw base without crazy queue times?
in WvW
Posted by: Draygo.9473
I would recommend you go to Devona’s Rest.
Sure its in the bottom teir but this same matchup was close last week. DR was the weakest server so they can use the most help. But DR scored over 100k points. Its tough fighting every single day for all servers, and no queues. Plus it is a really really fun matchup.
Full disclosure, i’m from Kaineng.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Until this is fixed kyt try my suggestion of binding closest target and spamming cc abilities as soon as you pick up a target. Warriors bulls rush and guardian greatsword leap are great for this (as the GS leap blinds the theif so he cant restealth).
When i had this used against me i can usually target the theif for about 2 seconds, even when he isnt yet rendered.
I have a guildmate that has used this as well and he does go down, but its typically to getting blinded or ending up having is CnD blocked. When you figure out the mechanics of it you look at and find a way to defeat it. I do agree its a big silly, but until its fixed I won’t let the enemy do it to me easily.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Yeah that particular BL you only have 3 viable exits, I would move to EB your own BL or the other BL (with the lake tower) till the camp breaks.
THe most viable exit on that BL if they are defending their supply camp right next to your spawn is to take the right exit, its unlikely that is camped really well with siege as you cant put siege on water.
EB you got like 6 exists, home BL a huge area to jump down, and the BL on the lake side tower you have a large area around the supply camp to jump down and escape north or out the main entereance you can go to the left, or just take the left exit.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Sitting on your hands is your choice.
On my server we dont sit on our hands and we have fun every single night. Its not all about winning. Play the game, winning is only a bonus.
Every exit from any starting point in any BL is currently being camped by 20+ with siege, for the 2nd week in a row now. Our server died last week and we’re losing more people this week. I do not care about winning, I do care that I cannot even set foot outside a spawn. But yeah sit on the high horse, tell us all we should do this or that.
My high horse? Ive played on kaineng from the beginning, we were camped for FOUR WEEKS into our spawn, I dont want to hear it from you. DId you know there are at least 3 ways out of the spawn room? Do you know we used them to take supply camps, and if the enemy was responsive we abandoned them and took another, and another, if they werent we camped them killing the enemy 2-10 at a time as they tried to retake it.
It was lots of fun. So please refrain from telling me to get off my high horse, ive been ‘spawn camped’ far more than you have.
The majority of the problem is player morale, like you demonstrate. Players with thin skin that cant think outside the box other than to attack head on the siege that is camping them instead of simply going around it and having fun actually playing the game.
I bet you wouldnt be spawn camped if people like you didnt log into your spawn and instantly give up, repeat that x50, and you probably could have had a force running around that could take towers and threaten forts.
Oh boo hoo i’m camped by siege, ive had worse.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Locknar, free server transfers end when guesting is enabled.
They have said that from the beginning, the feature that isnt complete is guesting. So what he says isnt a “load of crap”.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
As I came back home to see the new match, I hit a queue for Kaineng Borderlands. Imagine my surprise, thought it was primetime, so understandable.
Fun fights during the night, but it seems we from Kaineng are back to being outnumbered during peak hours, even with a queue. The botting population seems to be taking a lot of our slots. Our mini-zerg failed to take back garrison (and to heed good orders at times), and was eventually overwhelmed (and probably quit). A funny moment ensued as Devona and Fergusson fought outside Dawn’s (our tower) likely for the right of massacring us.
Attached, the only reasonably good screen I took, showing most of our defenders trying to hold the walls (and our commander deciding that a true commander should be inside the enemy formation).
Good fight for friends and foes alike on our Borderlands, see you all on the battlefield.
Actually us having a disadvantage on the weekends is perfectly normal.
Its something ive noticed – fergie as a server has far more weekend population than weekday. This isnt true for kaineng, while we have slightly more people on a weekend, our weekdays are much stronger.
Fergie has a lot of weekend warriors (I’m not complaining, just how it is) so look to them to take the early lead and we will play catchup during the week again.
With that said we should look to get as many points as we can get before the weekend ends as that will make our weekdays easier (less of a gap to close).
I do have a feeling that we wont be that competative this week though, I know several guilds are going to be taking breaks to do the october event stuff, though I do hope we can make the match competative.

There are ways to deal with it, ill list a couple:
Area block, blocking the attack prevents the theif from restealthing
Blindness, drop aoe effects that cause blind where you think he is, again preventing easy restealth.
Bind closest target and spam it, then use a CC ability as soon as you pick up a target. Against theives like him as a warrior i take bulls, spam closest target then smack bulls as soon as i get a target (it wont be visible due to rendering lag, but you can target him within a second of him coming out of steath). Once you stun the thief bolas him and spam your crap where you rooted him. Even if he restealths ther is a good chance your group is going to down him.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
server transfers have made the bottom 9 servers competative.
Keep in mind kaineng wasnt winning their matchup till today, so no one transfered to kaineng because they were ‘winning’.
People that care about competative matchups are transfering into the bottom teirs where there are competative matchups, and they arnt primarily picking the winning server in the group, they are jumping on the second and third server in the matchup.
I can practically guarentee you that ferg has gotten less people from transfers than kaineng or even DR.
I urge the fair minded players to transfer to a bottom teir server, pick a server that is losing its matchup and make a difference!
Apathy Inc [Ai]
No, i dont post screenshots of 7am time. And no its not possible to hold off 2 servers at once, if they want in, they get in. But thats expected. We tend to hold our bl, and the key EB keep during us prime, and maybe a fort or two on the other maps depending on what our organized guilds are doing.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Uh it doesnt turn primarily green till it gets out of US primetime on the weekdays.
Weekends yes, green team pulls out even more pop than we can handle, but weekdays no. We tend to be rather competative in the US prime timeslot on weekdays.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
We held the lead in our primetime for most of the time. It didnt flip over till about 1am.
And you had a lot to do with that
(not complaining).
Were pretty weak between 1am-6am and 12 noon – 7 pm.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
^ mesmers are god mode in jumping puzzles.
Its literally unfair :P
When my guild attempts it we bring 2 mesmers along, not only to pull down campers but to portal in reinforcements.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
DR is definatly the underdog right now.
For weeks they were solidly in second place, but they have had no real good PR.
And also this matchup is a testimate that free server transfers dont always destroy wvw, its actually making this a very decent matchup. Sure its unfair at particular hours but the scores are all much closer. And because kaineng and ferg are competative DR has had room to take things and work on building themselves up without getting smashed into their spawn point during primetime.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Fixit, they shouldnt post publically about what balance issues you want to tackle, its a double edge sword and no win for Arenanet to do so, until they are ready to implement.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
hahaha some fergs guilds are currently exploiting to get into lowlands keep. Great job guys! Show us why you deserve first place!
Edit: after pming them and making them aware that it was an exploit they showed excellent sportsmanship and left the keep on their own, so kudos play on.

Its more fair weather players imo than FST.
But its easy to blame something other than ourselves.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
one benifit kaineng has is that we really dont have all that many fair weather players. What you see is what we have, and even late in the week when the scores no longer matter were still fielding armies to fight.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Bad idea.
Like its really bad.
Supply camps and routes are designed to supply specific towers and keeps. Dolyaks are supposed to be raidable caravans so a server can choke an objective from getting resupplied while slowly whittling down the defenses of the fortification.
Supply crates would destroy this very important mechanic.
I want to upgrade a keep? So I grab a supply crate from godsword and run it down to dreaming bay and deposit, while i have guild mates go to far to reach supply camps and bring in supply. We use a mesmer to portal them in so we can bring them in on any point along the wall of a keep.
Keep gets +500 supply really quickly this way.
Ugh, its horrible. It removes a layer of strategy to wvw.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Jadeite, this thread died 11 days ago. Necro necro.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Uh. There is plenty of things small scale groups can do.
First thing you need to know is when to fight and when to flee. How to read a situation and react properly. Mobility builds on all your members so you can quickly escape situations that might not be favorable. Also proper defensive siege placement can create situations where 15 people can hold off much larger forces.
You can do these things in any server, but you gotta take the time to learn, and while you learn you will probably get swamped by ‘zergs’ quite often.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Siege, Kain and ferg are not allied. Nor working together.
Sniku 1 on 1 matchups in formats like this are terrible.
In my opinion you need a minimum of 4 opponents for a good match, the more the merrier.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
They are all over kaineng and devona’s rest. Literally all over, every single zone there is a bot army in it.
I’m pretty sure bots are the reason those servers arnt ‘low’ pop.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Yep forums definatly acting up a bit wierd.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
I’m rich? I didn’t know that :P.
We got them for free off of jumpin puzzles.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Other servers cant see colors your colors get replaced with your sides colors on our side. Were fighting the red and green armies.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Hey stone, according to predictions were going to have the exact same matchup next week.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
There is, but the point system doesnt really allow it.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Took you long enough
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Also, considering the way the point system is setup we have to go after you on some level or we will never catch ferg. Previously I was trying to get an event going on thursday if the points werent close where we both have some fun at green teams expense. If you are interested we can try to make it happen again.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Sniffy, i never sent the pms with “owned” or “noob” in it. Ill ribb you, but I definatly wont be disrespectful in that way.
I did try to get you to not attack EH with that small force you had, because I knew we would have to wipe you out, and we did. I was trying to save you a wipe. You jumped to a server with less pop and less force out in WvW so I cant fault you for what you did and I wish you the best of luck.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
We on kaineng are gunning for ferg at the moment. As you said above you are simply in the way. In order to beat ferg were going to need to take things on all 4 maps, including yours, especially if you cant keep your orb away from ferg. If you secure your own orb I promise we wont take it from you.
Swiping garrision from you the other day was apart of the plan to swipe the orb from fergie, we needed something that guarenteed you wouldnt attack EH, so I devised the plan to swipe garrision away then run down and hit ferg. Several of our major guilds got behind the plan and we put it in motion.
I expected you guys to take it back with ease as we only had a few pugs defending it. Only to find out that most of your population decided to leave the map and go to EB. After we took the orb from ferg we took the rest of the map because of the little resistance that was left from both ferg and DR. More points for us I guess.
By 4am eastern we had pretty much abandoned the map and you guys got to take it all back and secure your orb. So I’m glad your server took our stuff instead of fergie.
WvW is mainly about morale and attitude, dont go in pretending your going to take everything because you are awesome, and dont lose heart and jump out of the zone because you were setback. The only way to really lose in wvw is to log out. I think one of the primary jobs of a commander is to keep everyone having fun. Like hey we can do this crazy idea and it might work because its crazy. People stick around to see if it will work or not. When it does everyone feels great and wants to play longer, when it doesnt well it was a crazy idea anyway, and you drop down another plan before people can consider leaving.
You guys are in the position we were 2 weeks ago. I’m sure you can fight out of it like we did, and I’m rooting for you.
Especially the guild [RED] special shoutout to them.
I can assure you guys that ‘unnamed commander from kaineng’ is doing everything he can to win. I’m sure of it. He isnt trying to make you guys lose, he does make questionable calls, but its all with good intention.
For guilds looking to transfer, DR is definatly the hardest server right now. If your server owns 90% of the map and has 30min to 2 hour queues consider transfering. Its a hard fight but definatly very rewarding when you win, and its much more fun than PvD or Zerg v small group.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
- If your keep is under attack and it has more than 300 supplies in it you should buy that worker upgrade right away for an additional NPC that will fight for you! What, you could use that supply for 10 arrow carts, how silly.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
treat we are outnumberd on kaineng and DR.
It isnt as bad as it used to be. but were still outmatched. Consider how far ahead you are in score testifies to that fact.
I know fergy isnt big enough to put a zerg on every map, which is why you see the outmanned buff on certain maps.
Also fergy is still a release day server, you have people.
I do love you guys though, you are the weakest (read lowest pop) of all the release day servers and last weeks matchup must have been very painful.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
I believe its against the code of conduct. Report under spamming or verbal abuse.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Its fixed for me, as in its back to where it was before the patch that made everyone invisible.
If your running around with a big friendly zerg and hit an enemy zerg the enemy zerg loads in as before, peicemeal.
Apathy Inc [Ai]
Every tower and keep can be defended by ‘untouchable’ siege that can prevent attackers from meleeing the door.
