I have been away from the game for several months and am touching on the possibility of a Longbow Ranger again. Last time I did, it wasn’t a viable set up.

I am looking to try Power and Crit based builds.

Full zerker’s gear, I might mix some Cavalier’s gear in. I intend to carry two LBs one with Sigil of Bloodlust the other perhaps a damage or crit chance boost.

Signets have been working AMAZINGLY well for my LB build, been running LB + Sword/Dagger (in pvp) with sigs, build is 30/20/0/0/20, it’s been giving me some really good success, and i’m enjoying it greatly, takes out spirit rangers pretty well too which is always a plus!

The problem has been explain to us before. It’s because of the pet skills activation times. If you press F2 while the pet is using a skill attack, it needs to finish that attack, before it can start doing the F2 attack. That, plus the F2 skills own activation time, makes the F2 skills feel unresponsive. When a target is too far away, the F2 skill can also be canceled.

That’s not an excuse as to why it isn’t fixed yet, but that is the problem.

I will say it’s.a legitamit problem, but it needs fixing, F2 should override any and all actions (other than perhaps movement). I don’t think making them instant cast is the solution, kitten many here think it is, because really… AoE fear/immob/chill or the drake breathes etc, just is OP.

My concern is that if they aren’t made instant, ANet will simply activate the ability instantly regardless of what’s going on, but the pet will still need to run through the entire animation before the spell actually goes off. You’ll never hit anything with a wolf howl, drake breath, etc unless they are actively pummeling your face in and have absolute 0 situational awareness.

While I do agree with you that instant F2’s would be overpowered, the pessimist in me doesn’t have faith that ANet can make the F2 abilities both work and be balanced. And if I were to choose one or the other, I’d choose the one most in favor of the Ranger.

Well if i’m using drakes i tend to have a lot of snares/immobs (i’m a beast master) and just force the enemy to eat the drake breathe (or at least part of it), and i’ve never had issues with the wolf fear landing because i tend to force their dodges early, or make them dodge the wolf howl so i can pop something else, like muddy terrain for example.

Instant pet skills would be nice, sure, but i don’t think they’re -needed- that’s never been the issue i’ve had with them, it’s ALWAYS been that they just never use the kittening thing.

I personally just run around and solo/duo portals, but there’s nothing wrong with them going super zerg as long as they’re running around and hitting portals, as others have said the champions take out a much larger chunk of the invasion bar which actually makes it EASIER to close portals once you hit the critical mass of zerglings.

Not to mention i’ve never seen people purposely fail the event so they could farm champions, everytime there’s a champ farming zerg we always clear it with ~3min or so to spare, it’s normally when we have every idiot and their grandma trying to solo the aetherblades/ Molten Alliance instead of listening to the plan that we fail… (Zerging them is fine, but you can’t take those out easily with a small team)

Edit: i wonder what is up with the notebook-esque background. Also, that black splotch worries me. You know what else had black splotches? The Queens Speech page. I will NEVER forgive Anet if they put Aetherblades inside my SAB. NEVER. Tie the story in with them, whatever, but if they are physically teleporting into my game sessions, NO.

What if they are 8-bit fake aetherblades? I would like that.

I’d approve of this, and keep in mind the reason the SAB goes away is for “maintenance” (actual lore reason) so I doubt they’d be showing up.

Just get rid of Sharpening Stone and make Entangle an utility.

Entangle: Entangle your foe. They are immobilized until the vines are destroyed.
Survival.
Cool Down: 50 sec
Damage: 60
Bleeding 5 stacks: 6 sec
Immobilize: 1 sec
Duration: 10 sec
Number Of Targets: 3
Radius: 600

The bleeding is instantly applied upon creation and DOES NOT pulse for the duration of the skill.
The immobilize is instantly applied upon creation and DOES pulse for the duration of skill.

As far as the new Elite utility goes, just make some sort of super signet that doesn’t lose its passive when activated. Or a super trap that would disable the F abilities of other classes for a specific duration or disable the use of other elites/remove elite effects already on a foe, as well as doing some sort of other team support effect such as boon removal, condition removal, damage, apply random conditions…etc.

These are ideas I quickly thought of reading this post so let me know if this will solve the issue.

Don’t agree with the new elite ideas although I would like an elite Signet (maybe make it so passive cuts all damage done to pet by a flat % and make the active something totally boss). But I’d use entangle a lot more if it were as you described, as it is now it’s lack luster.

Well, she isn’t the most original villain ever but there is one reedeming quality…

She actually succeded in something. So compared to other villains who have 0 or next to 0 successes she doesn’t seem that bad.

Still if she would appear in any serious AAA (or even lower) RPG she would be considered a bad joke.

So far she hasn’t succeeded in anything she attempted. Kidnap the queen? Nope, she was Anise’s illusion and instead she got someone with more panache and aplomb. Oh, and HOBO-TRON.

She blew up every civilian that at the ceremony… that’s something, not to mention the Seraph Guards protecting them…

I personally LOOOOOOVE Scarlet, why should every villain need to be super cereal? I think it’s more fun when they’re a total loon. And for everyone being kitten about all the stuff she supposedly completed, even that asura thinks those rumors are full of kitten. So why are you believing them? And if they were true, so what? She could be a prodigy, it’s not really outside the realm of possibilities especially since she’s a Sylvari and can kinda be born with an obscenely large amount of knowledge..

I don’t PvP, but why waste the slot? I would rather have Rampage as One and use the Survival skill that muddies the ground, slowing people. Especially if I am rolling with axes and/or shortbow.

  1. reason NOT to go with RaO is if the enemy team are a bunch of boon stealers/destroyers, but those aren’t too common anymore now that the meta is condi. And even then I’d take spirit of nature over entangle unless I was traps.

Entangle should apply the current effect every second for 10s, now THAT would be an elite skill, and it’d make any area where players just jump out of the roots into a minefield of “watch your step!!”

IE: make it so you cast entangle, if you succeed (not interrupted or blinded) a radius around you would be marked in vines and every second vines would constrict up to 5 targets in the radius (as entangle is now). Because right now entangle is useless against the average player.

Ranger has a steeper learning curve than (oh yeah) thief for instance.. And this makes it an awesome profession.. Ok, if you can’t handle the micro management, get a profession without the pet..

Too bad hitting F3 is NOT the solution, I mean sure if I wanted 95% of the pets F2s to be worthless but at least activate it’d be a good idea, but having my drake scorch thin air because I need to avoid pressing F1 is stupid and NOT A SOLUTION.

You should have elaborated that you were talking about the special F2 attack of your pet in your begin post then, by the way.. You merely mention attack, so F1..
Also, just a hint, put your pet to passive, so that the hitting of F1 becomes a reflex, instead of hoping that the AI triggers nicely and your pet rushes to its target..

It’s true that there are still some issues with the F2 activation (lots of QQ threads about it), so no idea why you needed to make another thread about it?

Jumping puzzles (along with mini-dungeons) will be some of the locations that begin rewarding ascended crafting materials once crafting to 500 goes live; this is intended to help make these areas more rewarding and fun to go back to and play.

I’m just worried that some of the mini dungeons would become amazingly trivial if they got as much traffic as this would cause, are you guys going to implement a way for the mini dungeons to scale with the people there? Because I’d love to still be able to do the mini dungeons and not just have a cake walk to the loot (and seeing how the community farmed Orr for chests I can only dread what they’ll do to mini dungeons.)

PS: could you make events more RNG instead of so clockwork? It really kills the whole “living world” vibe when there’s a Zerg running a circuit of champion/event slaying.

So where is problem? I see way too often that my pet just won’t attack my target. It just roams around and doesn’t attack.

1) F3 will make your pet stop attacking and start getting back to you (read: attack queue cleared)
2) F1 on your target: new attack queue started

Spirit Ranger OP? Nah, it’s just cheese, nothing more.. Counter the cheese, have some epic wins..
I experimented with the Spirit Ranger, and have to admit that the Spirit of Nature’s Renewal is quite OP in teamfights (instant rez). But I didn’t like the playstyle at all (I’m not used to go melee as a ranger), so rebuilt to my zerker setup..

And now, when encountering one of those spirit rangers solo, they melt to my zerker build. Also, LB#5 works like a charm on a spirit ranger, killing his spirits with one action..

So, don’t blame the cheese or the meta, just be inventive and counter it.. :P

Actually the spirits AoE Rez isn’t instant, it has a cast time (which I interrupted 6 times last night in my guilds Tourny night) oh, that won us so many points its ridiculous…

I’d like our bows to behave more like in GW1 where each skill was essentially a different type of arrow/shot in our arsenal IE: crip shot, barbed arrow, poison tip sig, BA, etc etc etc. it seems like in GW2 they tried too hard to make the LB have a sort of “combo”, SB is fine, each shot has its purpose and your damage is from your auto (I like that style I just don’t like the SB as a weapon), they should scrap the LB skills and turn it into something more like Burning Arrow build fr Gw1

Yes, pets are stupidly broken. Sadly, having recognised that fact, you’re about to endure 5 pages of people telling you how pets missing everything and dying constantly is intended and you just need to learn to play.

I -thought- it was intended for like the first month or two until they (Anet) posted saying we are balanced around 100% pet uptime to which I just facepalmed and began looking at other professions…

Yeah I want my F2 to kittening work, I went an entire 5v5 brawl in tPvP and I kept trying to get my Hyena to use his kittening howl (tried at THE START of it while he had stability) and guess what? Didn’t use it at all, I must’ve pressed F2 (didn’t even interrupt him like I normally do) like 15 times in the fight, not once did he use it.

Sad part is this isn’t even a common occurrence, to make matters worse it wasn’t even he was bing interrupted he just flat out never kittening howled.

Now I remember why I liked my mesmers and engis prof mechanics more… They work…

I always liked the idea me and my friend came up with, we said to drop rapid fire and replace it with a skill called “Snipers Shot” you charge up the shot and fire it, at full charge it is a guaranteed crit and applies 10 vuln, half charge is 5 vuln (can’t fire before half) stationary while using it.

If its cast while in stealth it also causes bleeding to the target and is an AoE fear (sniper panic) for .5s.

I’d say Mesmer, they are AMAZING at 1v1, and have a large amount of utility in zergs, ESPECIALLY if you’re a glamour Mesmer, I personally am a manipulation a Mesmer so I’m just better in 1v1 environments, but still. They have several builds that use the same handful of gear sets, I’m a condi mes so rabid is essentially all I want to touch out of all the variations of condi I’ve used on my Mesmer (my favorite is 0/20/20/0/30).

Rangers and thieves are both equally good at roaming as the Mesmer, and if argue they’re better at it due to their mobility being great both in, and out, of combat where mesmers just have movement while in combat (I’d argue they have THE BEST in combat mobility though).

However, rangers kittening suck in zergs, pets useless regardless of what you do, which cuts your attack and utility by a large chunk right there. Thieves don’t do as well as a Mesmer in Zerg warfare, but they certainly do better than ranger, they can still go into the enemy Zerg and assassinate people before escaping.

In short, if you only want to WvW, don’t pick ranger unless you only wanna roam, it’s not worth the headache if you have other options.

I still think sig traits should swap places with the trap traits and then the martial mastery trait be moved into skirmishing

I reckon sigs should go in BM and replace some of those useless traits.

Then marksman would have 3 missing traits and they’d need more, not to mention it’d compete pretty heavily in a tree meant to BUFF YOUR PET.

The problem with marksmanship is if you run any other weapon than longbow you do alright and the tree isn’t too bad. But if you run longbow you need like 5 different traits because everything is spread out all over.

And your point is? The trap traits would fit in there best because it gives condi duration and the description of traps on the prof page is to essentially use them to punish attacks from getting close to your sniper perch, which would fit a marksman.

Not to mention the signet traits wouldn’t really be in a bad place if they were put into skirmishing.

In PvE I almost always have a fern hound and when paired with a longbow he gets perma swiftness which means my pet can get in and out quicker which I’ve found is an absolute god send for keeping him alive.

I agree fully with this message. I played GW1 a few days ago and that ranger and this ranger was night and day, the only similarities was they both had a bow and a wolf…

I have a disconnect with my personal instance. It doesn’t feel like I am supposed to be there. I would much rather purchase a location of my choosing than to live in that glorified tree stump full of walking cabbages.

Yeah, the sylvari home instance isn’t my -favorite- one (I really like the humans and asuras) but it’s ok. I’d LOVE to be able to choose my own, but is much rather have my current one show more of what I’ve done than to just be able to choose a new one.

I can’t even enjoy tpvp anymore because there is always 2-4 spirit rangers in every single match now, Thief is the only class I play, I have basically no counter to them unless I A ) sit there with my SB attempting to whittle down all of their spirits (which by the time I finish one spirit their team mate usually shows up) or B ) Attempt to burst them and then have to down them twice because of freaking OP res spirit. (again which can take a while and gives them time to wait for backup). This is if I even survive their constant pressure damage. This build is most definitely OP.

Hybrid thief shreds spirit rangers, found this out last night while I was spectating a friends game. He used P/D and I think S/P, he had 30 in trickery for the daze on steal, and had a good amount in the top tree too, I know he had the poison venom (god that’s redundant) and the torment venom, think he had thieves guild and needle trap (I remember the 3rd utility skill was weird and I never saw it used before).

What he did was he’d steal in on the ranger and roll a lot so caltrops were everywhere and then he’d do the torment teleport skill on P/D (targeted their stone spirit) which would kill it, and then focus on the ranger, and if all the spirits died off he’d daze the ranger, and just stun lock him to death with his hybrid burst (burst of condis and raw damage).

So thieves can counter spirits, most just don’t.

Yeah it’s a cool concept, but they really dropped the ball on it, I know there’s a few people who showed up in my instance that I hardly remember from my story and it’s just like, “who the hell are you?” (Granted there are others I remember very well).

Another thing I’d like is for them to give the guys from your story a little bit of special dialogue, because it’s weird that they have nothing to say if you ask me and I doubt a dialogue box would be too difficult for them to add..

The problem with Rangers is Structured PVP, Anet seems to balance around the LCD of this game, which is SPvP and its general awfulness. Until we separate that dumbed down system of point camping from the rest of the game, Rangers will not see improvements.

I mean christ, Spirit Rangers are the most overpowered thing ever seen in SPvP right now according to the forums.

Let that sink it…Spirit Rangers…Are absolutely so overpowered…That Rangers need to be gutted because of it.

Forums =/= fact, remember when 100 blades were OP? Yeah me neither, but the forums screamed to the high heavens it was, spirit rangers are in the same boat, stupid people think they’re OP, they really aren’t though and are easily countered.

To be fair, they did nerf 100blades and the Ranger was a casualty of war. This was when they nerfed the attack speed buff on zephyr’s and frenzy.

That didn’t nerf 100blades in the slightest, the build still ran rampant until they move the damage for adrenaline level trait to a grandmaster which killed the original variation of the build.

All they killed with that was mass quickness burst being mandatory and OP, which was the goal. Because when every tPvP team except like 3 ran a Mesmer so they could all run to mid point pop Timewarp and burst something’s wrong

The problem with Rangers is Structured PVP, Anet seems to balance around the LCD of this game, which is SPvP and its general awfulness. Until we separate that dumbed down system of point camping from the rest of the game, Rangers will not see improvements.

I mean christ, Spirit Rangers are the most overpowered thing ever seen in SPvP right now according to the forums.

Let that sink it…Spirit Rangers…Are absolutely so overpowered…That Rangers need to be gutted because of it.

You’ve listed the options. Empathic Bond, staying in Spring, and SoR.

On the flip side, the Ranger is also a strong condi class (even with mostly being single target only with condis) and it really isn’t ‘fair’ for a condi class to also have strong condi removal imo. Necro of course does I realize, but that was a mistake on ANets part imo.

They said necro is supposed to be -the- condi prof, hardly see that as a mistake since they suck vs direct damage.

I’m simply saying it’s poor class design to have a class both be strong at conditions and also remove conditions with ease. You run into the whole Necro vs Necro fights go nowhere scenario.

Well they can’t be the kings of condis if condis killed them easily now can they? And both my Mesmer and my engi have been able to beat condi necros (both them are condis) and my trapper ranger can do the same, it’s rough and there’s no way you could go 2v1 with it, but it’s totally doable.

Gauntlet was awesome, wallet was awesome, pavilion anti Zerg bosses was awesome(need more like that). But god, I can’t understand how people can farm like this, I got all my pavilion achievements done (quickly thank god) while getting tickets for the gauntlet. But I can’t take any more of it… So… Not that awesome….

We really do have an issue though, our pets are a bigger hindrance than a boon in most scenarios, and we literally don’t even have a niche, you can tell me all you want we are the “jack of all trades” (not anymore D= ) prof or the “ranged” prof or the “pet” prof but the thing is literally everyone else can fill those roles, ele = jack of trades, anyone can have pets without being forced into it (I don’t think we should -need- pets more so that GW1 didn’t require it), and I -guess- you could say we are the “ranged masters” but all that means is that we’re the kings of mediocrity because ranger will never be as powerful as Melee.

I wanted to ask how other rangers deal with conditions.

In almost every build I’ve ever made my biggest weakness is always to strong condition builds (looking most at necro and p/d theives here).

So how to others deal with this? I always run Emphatic Bond but it doesnt cut it vs a condition heavy build, and healing spring I find hard to use given that you need to stay in it for 5-10 seconds to even make it worth it. SoR is again, I find, not that greakittens great for clearing a condition burst but after that… nothing.

So how do other rangers deal with a necro through 8 conditions on you in one go? Or to a theif perma stealthing and continually stacking bleeds?

Thief condi builds just kinda tickle in 1v1s… As for necro I run high vitality, poison off on dodge + Spring and try to blow them up with my pet before it gets out of hand, remember necros are designed to DOMINATE attrition fights, the counter to a necro is to blow them up ASAP.

I voted for Kiel and I’m a GW1 vet, granted I’m under the impression Ellen won’t be a good leader and will cause a lot more chaos because she’s going to start a war on consortium etc.

Who else would like to see more things added to our personal instance from the living story. The quartz node was nice, but like it doesn’t need to be something you gain items from, even something as basic as say a Watch Knight, or a poster of who we voted for (Ellen/Evon) or Liadris Head on a Pike!!

What about giving the pets high damage long melee range cleaving attacks? due to only cleaving pet is drake which is a tanky pet.

This would fix NOTHING, the problem is that we rely to heavily on the pet which is dead most the time, the best solution would be to make pets not out 100% and thus us not be based on needing them out 100%, maybe even add a trait into Marksmanship or something that’s called “Lone Ranger” where you get a damage boost for ignoring your pet, and then put one in BM where you’re capable of having your pet out 100% of the time if you can keep it up.

  • More concise pathing for pets.
  • Pet status bar with more information.
  • More freedom of movement on the sword.

Those would be my top three. I wouldn’t mind a decent gap closer on the sword either, but that may be asking too much.

Just flip the order of the hornet sting/monarch skill. Suddenly we have a gap closer to open with and a dodge back if we need it.

They talked about why the sword works the way it does via the leap evade so I doubt they’ll change that. Besides, I love sword the way it is. Why don’t you guys ask for a new main hand weapon instead of trying to change what some people like?

Because I like the sword. But I don’t like having my freedom of movement taken from me every time I use it.

Besides, if we did get another main hand melee weapon, would it even be on par with the sword’s DPS?

I liked the idea of remove the 2 and 3 skill chains off the 1 handed sword, and putting them onto serpent strike, except have kick be reverted to its Knock Back it was in BWE1, and make pounce put 5-10 might on instead (since you can’t spam it)

-1? I think? I want the mechanic to be our pet but I want it to be altered still…. Here’s how I want it to be done:

“In all honesty i think they should just balance the Ranger profession around the pet being bonus damage and then make the pet not out 100% IE you summon the pet who will fight with you for X seconds or until it dies (we get command of it as we do now) and then it leaves and begins going on CD (F4 would make it so we send it back sooner than it normally would and thus start the CD earlier). Pet would still be the rangers mechanic, you’d still NEED to use it to be playing to your fullest (like a necro needs to use death shroud or a thief steal), but ignoring it, or not relying on it wont destroy your viability.
Just throw some Grandmaster Major trait in the BM tree that makes it so your pet will be out 100% of the time( or maybe make it so the CD on the pet starts when summoned so you have the potential of 100% uptime) and make Zephyrs Speed or w/e it’s called trigger on pet summon.”

Well Anet is NEVER going to remove the pet from ranger because they’ve said a TON of times near launch that the pet is the rangers mechanic and that’s never going to change. Personally I feel preparations should’ve been the ranger mechanic, because when I though “ranger” in GW1 I thought “preparations” not “pets” and I was even a BM ranger in GW1!!

I had a suggestion for how they should alter the pet mechanic, I’ll post it in this thread later today or something.

Pets can’t aggro something the party hasn’t already aggroed. I’m not certain of the specifics, but at the very least, if your whole part stops at the water in HotW and you aren’t in combat, no matter where the pet is, it won’t aggro something unless it attacks it.

The only part I’m uncertain of, is if mobs have shared aggro. By this I mean, if you send in a pet to attack the Nightmare Tree in F/U, will it aggro all the spiders if it hits the tree? Not that it would matter for that encounter anyway (the pet will die from the tree’s attacks in no time) but the specifics of the new pet aggro are still a slight mystery to me.

My pet was on passive because i was told to do so and it still aggro’d the champ, to my knowledge pet aggro is the same as normal aggro.

Pets used to not draw aggro from npcs they hadn’t attacked, they fixed it a patch or two ago because people were using it to kill npcs in wvw camps and such.

They still don’t draw Agro from things you haven’t agroed, I was using my pet in Arah to clear out the KD hands in the middle of 2 groups of Risen. Very useful!!
