Siphaed, that post was deleted for trolling. You may want to remove the quote.

And yet your post implying that those of us unwilling to PvP in WvW against better geared enemies are insane goes untouched. You might want to reword that, humorous as I find your assertion.

As far as the Manifesto goes, if we misunderstood it, they should have corrected our perceptions prior to putting the game up for purchase. They lurked many a forum as well as Reddit where posters constantly assumed level 80 gear available upon release would be the final gear and very easy to get. They even justified the gems for gold system to those of us who disliked it by pointing to the lack of vertical progression at level cap.

Links to proof please?

It’s not that I don’t trust you, I just like to double check my sources. So far a lot of the issue has come from people having different interpretations and I want to see if they actually said all of this in black and white.

I can, of course. The real question is, how many links and quotes do you want?

We’ll start with this one:

By DarkWasp on a Guru thread on microtransactions from February:

Keep in mind that Guild Wars 2 will be somewhat like Guild Wars in the way that you should be able max out your level and items in a month or two.

So selling of max stat items and XP potions would have a much smaller impact than other MMOs. However, if you play with others buying such a thing would be a kitten thing to do. They have not said they would sell these things, BTW. In fact I think they confirmed NO xp potions two years ago.

Just something you should think about before anyone freaks out about GW2’s micro-transactions. Aside from the fact that there are micro-transactions at all, that is kind of worth freaking out about if you’re an older gamer with a history and all this new market stuff rubs you the wrong way. But hey, at least there’s no monthly fees.

Ok, so Darkwasp is an ANet representative? Just making completely sure. Honestly, I’m okay if you more put me on a trail. Give me some names and I’ll go digging in the guru forums for posts they’ve made.

Sorry, I’m really not trying to be patronizing, rude or difficult. I’m just the type who, when they see another whole side to the story, loves to go root through it to see what else has or hasn’t been said.

I Appreciate the Apology

Uh… So you really obviously fail at appreciating things.

Because none of that sounded appreciative at all. It was just preachy about how horribly they wronged you and how you want to see the changes to things you dislike or you won’t ever be coming back. Plus tacking on a demand for implementing a complex system in a month.

That’s not really appreciating an apology. At all.

I’d say try again but I don’t want to see it potentially get worse.

Agony is actually rather brilliant

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: EndlessDreamer.6780

EndlessDreamer.6780

No, it’s not, and if you dig in the AMA you will see where Chris Whiteside himself says it sucks and they’re not going to do something like that again.

Really? I transcribed the whole thing. Here, let me get the quotes on agony for ya!

“Q: The agony system (as well as any other monster-only conditions added in the future) seems to encourage grinding for hard-to-get gears as opposed to skill-based progression promised in the manifesto, will this be remedied in the future?

A: I think the amount of materials required to make some of the gear is disproportionate to the amount of time the player wants to put in before he/she starts feeling like the goal is a grind and this skews the overall experience of
the dungeon and the perception of the gear within it. I would like us to correct this and we will start working to this shortly.

In regard to future items the amount of work required to gain an item to allow players to experience content and continue having fun will be balanced appropriately.

Fractals have become the end-all for making your character stronger. Players are vanishing from maps everywhere to grind grind grind for the now-strongest items they can get ahold of. It’s disruptive to the community, the fun, and the manifesto. What is being done about this?
This ties back to what i was saying earlier in which Ascended Gear and really any progression related reward mechanism that impacts the world globally should be introduced (Where possible) across the game and inside the different type of player’s activities specifically. Allowing players to continue doing the things they love without focusing player migration to a specific part of the world. The introduction of the Ascended reward in one part of the game was a mistake and one that i don’t want to make again.

Soon Ascended Gear will adhere to these rules."

“Do you stand behind the decision of having the levelling system in FOTM, essentially fracturing your player base into many, many, different portions, with players only looking for the specific level they need to advance through level difficulty?

It was never a conscious decision to fracture the player base through the Dungeon. Honestly we were aware the dungeon was good but we didn’t know just how popular it would be. Nearly straight away we saw the issue and have been working on a fix since, we have explored multiple systems and will land on one this week. Suffice to say that Ascended should have been a global roll out and wasn’t.

In regard to disconnects we totally understand the frustration. It frustrates everyone in the studio because they have to suffer through it to. On top of this i never hear the end of it from my guild! Kidding aside though it is a big issue, we have a fix in our dev build and will test it thoroughly before deploying it. We will let you know when we intend to deploy."

You were sayyyyying?

He said the implementation of Ascended gear in only one area of the game was an obvious mistake. He said no such thing about agony.

I thought long and hard about letting my children play this type of game with me. In the end I came to the conclusion that most of the action in GW2 is no more graphic than the cartoon violence the boys would see in programs like Ben 10 and similar action cartoon series, or live action shows such as Doctor Who, Harry Potter etc. Young boys seem to naturally gravitate towards play involving battles, guns, etc whether or not they see it in a game. I agree with GraynX that the key factor here is how we deal with it as parents.

I have found that playing together actually gives plenty of opportunities to discuss issues like fighting and violence, war and peace, the difference between real and make-believe, and how to behave ethically and honourably. We also emphasise the roles of helping and saving, etc rather than focusing on ‘killing’ and it helps that the GW2 hearts give non-combat options.

I think there are a lot of positive learning experiences children can gain from playing games in family setting. Reading and numeracy are important in understanding what is happening in the game, and managing a characters inventory and gold is a useful exposure to handling money. Only last week my 7-year old complained he did not have enough coin to travel to a waypoint, so we sat down and looked at ways to save money and make money in the game, which he enjoyed, and now proudly tells me how much money he makes when he has gathered loot and sold it to a merchant.

Gaming also teaches skills such as teamwork, map reading, making and following plans, and going on missions together gives them a chance to find their niche in the group and shine. Some of my fondest memories are of times when the boys learnt to be brave like GraynX’s son and fought valiantly to the end for the team.

So overall I came to the conclusion that the positives outweighed the negatives, especially in this information age they are growing up in. We have to set boundaries about amounts of screen time, homework and outdoor activities etc as the boys would easily play too much if I let them, but that is pretty standard parenting for any activity.

I guess we all have to follow our consciences as parents and make our best judgement call based on knowing our children. Sadly there is still a lot of rather alarmist and ill-informed nonsense in the popular press about video games in general, so is nice to see parents looking at the pros and cons carefully and making thoughtful choices.

God, I am so in love with the posts in this topic so much. Thanks again for a wonderfully thought out approach to introducing younger children to a game. Even if you had chosen that it wasn’t in their best interest, you were reasonable in your thought processes.

Thanks for this post. It really made my day.

As for the questions on violence and young children, I’d look up some research done on the subject. Most of it points towards the fact that parents or role models tend to be a more important factor than exposure to violence in development of a child’s set of morals and sensibilities about violence.

Also, a HUGE thing about GW2 professions is your own play style and personality.

Certain people are just naturally better at doing Mesmer stuff from the beginning because that’s how they play.

And, well, as much as I love ANet, a lot of fixing needs to go in to non-Warrior and Guardian classes. They’re doing it, but slowly, so it’ll be a while before everyone is standing on even footing. And that makes sense, cause data is needed and a lot of it to make informed changes.

Oh come on, the Manifesto was pretty darn clear. And it’s not like they ever made an effort to correct any of the pre-purchase fans who expressed their delight in countless threads about not suffering through an end-game gear grind.

Nor did they drop by to reassure potential players who were interested in the game but worried about a lack of horizontal progression, even though those players were constantly told by fans that they should play something else instead.

If the Manifesto itself didn’t convict them, their silence did.

The man spent 8 hours answering questions. I honestly don’t know what he could have said to appease you.

Well, he could have said “Everything we say is a lie.”

I imagine the reaction here would be something like this:

Actually, that’s probably pretty accurate…

I have perhaps grown cynical in my old age, but I tend to take anything and everything a game developer says (even the ones I like) with a cargo freighter (or two) of salt, so there’s not much he could have said beyond something like “Yeah, we intentionally mislead the horizontal GW1 type guys with our manifesto video and stuff so they’d buy the game, and now that we have their money we’re switching gears in an attempt to grab some quick cash from the folks out there who prefer the grindy vertical stuff and when that’s played out we’ll switch gears again and go for yet another crowd. Maybe even… your crowd! So stick around. Lots and lots of fun stuff yet to come!” that would have impressed me. Heck, if he’d said that I’d be tempted to spend moar $$$ on the game!

The only thing that stops me from laughing at this post is the realization people seriously expected malice where stupidity (even momentary stupidity) can explain it just as well. They had what they thought was a neat idea, developed it, and didn’t stop to think about the ramifications.

And it was after they proudly put it forth that it started to sink in . . . “oh no…”

Could they have known better? Probably, very much so. Unfortunately, this has happened, and it’s time to deal with it and move on. We can’t roll it back and pretend it never happened, we can’t not acknowledge it, because it did happen. And they made it clear they’re going forward with Ascended existing in the future, there’s not much changing that.

So it’s time to move on from it. Harsh, perhaps, but it’s okay if you want to leave over this. The game isn’t what you thought it would be, that’s fine. Go back to waiting for the one you want, just know this game is still here if you feel like coming back to kill time.

And you know what, if you are on my server or see me on an Overflow and don’t violently object to grouping up, I’ll happily go do some stuff with your group. All right? Fair enough?

Maybe it was stupidity on their part like you suggested. Perhaps it was just office politics. Like you said, its over. It’s time to either accept it or leave. However, Tachenon was right. Claiming that they didn’t stray from their manifesto and break their promises is another slap in the face. It happened. (a two year old could figure that out.)

No.

The strayed from YOUR interpretation of THEIR manifesto.

That is a big difference people don’t seem quite to be getting.

It no longer matters anymore what the difference is. Part of the community perceived this change, this betrayal, and as a whole the community fractured. Whether they were wrong, right, deluded, prescient . . . it does not matter. It happened, it’s done.

What matters more is:

“So what do we do about it?”

And I think this AMA was their first step towards that. Which is why the animosity I’m seeing towards it just perplexes me. :/

Honestly, no matter what people said, the people who were going to leave were going to leave. Even if they had said they were going to remove ascended gear, get rid of all grind and personally kiss their feet wherever they walked, this AMA would not convince a single person who wanted to leave to stay.

Why? Because the people who are reading it and were planning on leaving don’t want to be convinced otherwise. They just want some validation before they go out in their puff of smoke.

Now, I’m not talking about the people who have concerns, complaints or general grievances. You guys are ESSENTIAL to our ongoing community and I love you all for it, even if I don’t agree with you.

I’m just talking about the people who already had both feet out of the door and were just waiting for one last time to complain and saw the AMA as a chance to do it.

Imo the biggest screw up they did was limiting how you could get ascended gear, making running FoTM did not score much imo. If they would have made craftable version’s, and pvp version’s from the get go, I think alot of this firestorm could have been negated or atleast deminished.

ANet initially introduced Ascended gear via the FotM. They have written that this, perhaps, was the wrong way to go about. However, this new gear tier will roll out throughout the game; which will mean it will provide more accessible ways to get it.

The major problem with that is if we apply the current grind for ascended items to other avenues all you’re looking at is more flavors of grinding available. Think about it, 2000 badges of honor for 1 item, 1 million karma per item, or 20 dungeon runs for 1 item. Not to mention that both karma and WvW have severely limit stat combinations. They could add 20 different ways to get ascended items but if the current grind is any indicator they still wouldn’t be more accessible.

Read the AMA. They stated that they realized that the price of ascended items were disproportionate in certain ways to the amount of work they wanted people to put in for them in comparison and they’re looking in to it.

2) Send in a support email with a new email. If you provide enough information they should be able to change the e-mail associated with the account. You’re going to have to provide a bit of information though, but since it was a trial, I’m not sure the normal “Serial/Email/Etc” route is going to work.

How far did your wife progress in the game? If not far, maybe just make a new fresh account and start from scratch? It might get you in faster and save you a lot of trouble, because complete loss of an email is really going to hamper the email change process.

Worst registartion system I have ever seen #2

So do you actually want help or to just insult the game? You’re going to have to give more information here if you actually want them to be able to help. Your post consisted of 3/8 of actual constructive information as to your problem and 5/8 of insults. That’s really not helpful.

So you input your email and password and you got an invalid account or password feedback? Are you sure that you put in the right information? What was the error message exactly? Did you try multiple times?

Try to help them to help you if you can. I’d also suggest submitting a ticket, that can do nothing but help you try and get in to the game.

Huh. Could you hover over the little red icon right to the right of your HP sphere? It’s between your HP and your signet. I feel like that may be the source? I just would like to know the name. Seems odd.

Ascended requirements are unreasonable!

Please explain?

There is a recipe that uses the Exotic back-item from the dungeon shop + a gift of ascension (also from the dungeon shop) + Vial of Condensed Mists Essence + Crystals/Philosopher stones

It’s not this though:

As a short bow user. This is a must.

Do you mean the quiver skin?

If so, ya, I’ll bite. I spent a lot of gold to get that skin. :P

This isn't about gear but human nature

Both Backpack and rings are 20%. The Karka Shell vs the Ring that doesn’t exist in game but you love to quote is around 20% as well if a similar upgrade slot for divinity based stat setups existed. An exotic ring vs an ascended ring that isn’t the ring that you won’t stop quoting is 20%. That’s really not super significant. Yes it’s nice, but it’s not so huge that it’s necessary for anything specifically.

But that’s my opinion. Some people might find it worth it.

If you hover over the debuff, it should show which enemy is causing it? I know it does it for buffs.
