This is kind of on topic – does anyone know if the dye packs you can buy have a chance to contain ANY dye?

Like maybe the chances of the super rare dyes are just much lower?

You get two rare or uncommon dyes, and some five common ones. To the game, all “rare” dyes have the same chance as far as I know. It’s just that there are too many of them.

I took psychology as my minor during my undergrad, and so this is kind of a neat study in behavior. Given the incentives Arenanet has provided for people to cooperate, it seems like there’s a mild carry-over for generalized generosity, even when there’s nothing like XP to be gained. Arenanet has put players in the habit of simply helping out, in other words. It’s pretty cool.

And that is funny indeed. If we took other MMORPGs as a reference, it’s the egoistical homo economicus everywhere, to the point people could even draw a negative conclusion from human nature in general. Surprisingly it’s the whole opposite here. So yes, the game itself was to blame for the poor community before.

Disappointing.

Well, doesn’t sound like an issue with the game. You won’t normally get friends when you have zero initiative on it.

It’s not really a matter of fairness…if they were to have left it the way it is, then cooking is worthless because everyone will pump it up to 400 easily…

It’s not exactly an unfair advantage for players that got it to 400 because for me, I do need to put in effort to find the karma vendor in high level zones.

So it’s easy, but not unfair when you’re the one doing it. :p I don’t know how else they could have handled it, but I don’t like what it turned out to be.

You do realize that #000000 would just be plain ugly and not verisimilar at all?

Yes, but anything else isn’t really Black. If you want black, it should be black, but I’d personally rather see some actual Dark shades of gray made available, as even the darkest ones available are really quite light. Take a screenshot of a dye, such as Graphite or Pitch, which have a nice gray color, then go in and play with the brightness and contrast and you can clearly see that much darker colors could be made available and still look really nice.

I beg to differ, there is a lot of “black” in the game. “Black” is not a single shade, but a whole spectrum of them, until the threshold in which there is a clear uncertainty on whether to call the color “black” or “gray” or anything else. It is no different than other colors.

On Worlds that do not have a designated language tag (i.e. DE, FR, or ES), people may speak whatever language they wish to speak. If anyone is verbally abusing people for speaking a different language from them, please report them.

@Gamakatana: not everyone speaks English. This is an international game. Players should be able to speak whatever language they wish to and play in peace.

Then how about making English servers? What’s the point of even having the DE/FR/ES servers if you can speak whatever language you want in any server? I’d rather have everyone speak English on the server I play on, thank you.

Aside of maybe some European servers, that’s completely unnecessary. English speakers are the extreme majority in most servers and you really don’t get to hear anything else on map chat.

I am playing on the European servers.

Fair enough, then. I guess it really can be an issue in some of them.

For the start, i’m Portuguese so @mariannitten, your arguement is invalid. I mean me and Keikat are portuguese and we had english in school…. I’m in the game and all i see is foreign language everywhere, not understanding anything from map chat i think it’s not polite, as i am not spamming the map chat in portuguese, because i respect other people and nationality. Not every1 speaks english? i think every kid that is 12+ years old (that’s what Guild wars 2 is rated) speaks basic english, basic enough to understand the game or even talk with other people….

I am Brazilian and I completely agree that keeping map chat clean from foreign languages is the polite thing to do. Map chat is really something people should use for talking to everyone, not just those who use a certain language. English really is the most efficient one at that. I really just speak Portuguese when I know that the ones I’m directing the message at will understand it. It makes no sense otherwise.

Now, aside of map chat, I really wouldn’t like people to tell me to use another language when it really doesn’t concern them. It makes no sense for someone to come dictating me to speak something else when I am on /say talking to a few friends in Portuguese.

Just think, the money they spent to make that identical SW:TOR-esque trailer could have gone to creating more servers and completely removing the horrible overflow shard system, hiring new developers to put in MMO features like trading, dueling, gear inspection, more PVP modes, raiding, etc.

Erm. First, overflow solves itself over time as people level up. Opening more servers has bad long-term implications.

More developers? Who said we don’t have enough?

Trading will never be in. Inspecting is completely unecessary, and raiding? Seriously? I’m quite sure we’re getting dueling and more PvP modes soon enough. The game just came out and people expect immediate updates. Good grief.

I think this Advertisement was designed to attract socially awkward players. I can’t see any other purpose to it

Walking on coal would mean a struggle people go through to achieve something. And I don’t get the socialky awkward thing. It’s obviously something with the message of rebelling against established paradigms, which really is the game’s general idea.

I actually liked the trailer a lot, I like that they went for real-life, and the trailer has a nice mood. It’s a little cheesy and the people seem to have jumped out of a book about stereotypes, but it’s still kinda cool.

What REALLY annoyed me is that they spoilered ANOTHER of the dragons (maybe even zhaitan?)! Seriously, in every teaser or trailer they post there is another dragon shown and it takes the surprise away seeing them for the first time. Why? You could have done the same trailer with the dragon you spoilered last time >< But hey, they wanna show off what they got, it’s the same with movies all the time

That’s Zhaitan. Dragon made up of dragons, hence the multiple dragon heads.

Exactly! If you just mouse over the little color swatch samples on that page you can clearly see that there is No Black Dye, just a slightly darker shade of gray. The color code would display as 000000 if it was actually black.

It’s really sad that even Abyss Dye isn’t Black, but it’s closer. So many of the colors have names that seemingly have no connection to the color you see when you preview them. I don’t know how there were so many mistakes with the color system, but you can’t even make a Human character without seeing tons of errors with the colors, specifically in the hair colors. Light Pink is gray, White is a dark yellow.. and that’s jut for starters. lol

I don’t think quaggan, hylek, skritt, or grawl are as likely to ever be a playable option because their brains are sort of stuck at an early developmental stage. They’d have to break their character role to fit into storylines.

I can understand the developmental stage when it comes to Skritt, Hylek, Grawl, Ogre and others. But Quaggans? They are very intelligent and civilized. They just aren’t very ambitious. Go back to WoW then. This does not go along with the game philosophy. And why in the world do you want meters for “dodge fails”, “damage intake”, “healing”? Those make zero sense in this game.

Telling me to go back to wow. Now that is something new.
Please inform me about that game philosophy you are talking about that this not go along with. I thought avoiding really bad players (not average ones, just really bad) or trying to improve ones skills was universal in any game.

The philosophy is that anyone can be an useful asset to a group and that you don’t have to wait forever to form a good team to play the game. If you want a team with really good synergy with you, join a guild and get some friends. This is not a game for bragging idiocy, team drama and kitten bars.

Why would I want meters for those skills you ask. Well, if someone fails to dodge 100% special attacks that means you are essentialy playing 4 player dungeon, not 5 player one especially during boss fights.

You do realize people dodge not only to directly dodge attacks or have “evade” show up on their character, right? It is also used for avoiding bad situations before they even happen and quick relocation. Such a meter would be useless.

If he is down he is not doing dps, he is not buffing or healing anyone, he wastes your efforts and time.

Except that you can bring him back up to increase the overall dps once more. Some builds are more easily downed than others, obviously.

Healing could show “healing others” cattegory, you would know the difference between players who bothered to try and aoe heal others when needed and those who did not. If for example there would be requirement to interrupt casts (which would be nice btw) you can see who bothers and who doesn’t.

Why not just ask them if they have supportive abilities instead? And there are no pure “healers” in this game, it’s unreliable. You are going to die if you intend to rely on people with healing bars.

Yeah it will probably happen whether we want it to or not. Luckily in this game players doing harder content are expected to do much more than just full-on dps.

Since when is “it happens in all MMORPGs” is an excuse for “it’ll happen in GW2”? This is not exactly a MMORPG to follow trends.

How is this NOT a game to follow trends? Just because the game itself is different, the players are the same and if there’s enough demand for something and it’s possible to do, it will happen. We already have gold selling, powerleveling services, quick 1-400 crafting guides, 1-80 leveling guides, databases for recipes, detailed maps with mob spawns and the like, I can go on forever. The same tools we end up with for other games will be available here if it’s possible to do.

Just because there are gold sellers and people power leveling it does not mean that developers are going to follow trends just for the sake of it. Do you even know anything about the game you’re playing? Go watch their MMO manifesto please. It seems like no one here understands the philosophy behind the team. This game is about questioning everything other MMORPGs have done, not just clone everything for the sake of it. If you want a WoW experuence, go back to it, this is not the place.

I agree, this was poor design, but it’s still easy to counteract. First thing to do is to level in a second zone, for the same level range. Also make sure you gather every gathering node, as this gives good xp for no effort, and little time

This is an Asian grindfest though, so naturally, the fastest way to level once you’ve done the quests, is to grind mobs. Try to find mobs that are out of the way, and off the beaten path, as in Guild Wars 2, you get more bonus xp per mob, for the longer it’s spawn has gone untouched. For this reasonl you don’t want to stay in one place for too long, but move around the map grinding mobs around your level. Never go into a zone that downgrades your level, as this will gain you xp at a much slower rate

It’s not an Asian grindfest, it’s an American game with very little grinding. (Yes, NCsoft are Korean, but ArenaNet have a great deal of autonomy.)

Grinding mobs is a terrible way to level as they don’t give much xp.

1. Zone completion gives quite a bit, even city zones.

2. Move between areas, there are multiples for each level bracket.

3. Make sure you do events as well as hearts (always go for gold medals).

4. WvW gives a lot of xp.

5. Gather from every node you pass.

6. Crafting gives loads of xp, especially cooking since it’s easy to level.

Are you high? Killing mobs gives you like 1500 xp each, for just a few seconds of DPSing them

You just have to find some that haven’t been farmed recently

Mobs giving you 1500xp? And you ask him if he is high?

What race/class should I pick?

As for antisocial, well, internet is antisocial anyway.

Speak for yourself. This game isn’t.

Anti-casual is preciselly the reason why it is not implemented I think. Right now no way to check who has subpar gear, who autoattacks all the time and fails with dodges regularly. Why is that? So that no feelings get hurt, everyone is a “winnar” and is “speciul” snowflake.

This has nothing to do with being anti-casual. It may actually be more casual because it makes it easy for you to tell how to do more damage. Either way, it just doesn’t belong in the game. Were it for me, we’d remove all number indicators from the game to cut all of the mathematical min-maxing crap community. Poor relic from tabletop RPGs.

It would be challenging for certain races to be playable, mostly due to varying the armor designs and giving them believable stories and lip syncing with their voices. But it’s doable.

Tengu
Koda
Quaggan
Skritt
Hylek

All of these are great races with tons of originality and heaps of potential to be playable in an expansion. While Tengu and Koda are at the top of my list, I love all of the ones I listed. I know it seems a bit…strange to be attracted to rat people but I find the Skritt to be extremely cute. The problem with them is that they’re only intelligent in large groups. This could be solved with a proper backstory though. Maybe have a large city of Skritt uncover a spell or magical object that lets them keep their heightened intelligence even when separated or something.

Quaggan thinks lip synching is not an issue, because Quaggan talked to many Tengu and other Quaggans and had no issues with it.

Okay, I’ll stop before someone hates me. :P But yeah, there are plenty of those NPCs in cinematics. For me the biggest issue would be that they’d need whole storylines for it. And the races you can help were designed to be secondary characters, it seems. And there is no longer a big Quaggan city since Jormag invaded the north and everyone began attacking them, they are scattered everywhere in small communities.

Plus Quaggans are a peaceful race. Sure they are fighting against the dragons because they have to, but still.

Then people need to do more with their time because I’m barely level 21 and I’ve had it since the pre release lol I play everyday too xD
On the side note, about people quitting because there is no end game, I really think that is so dumb, everyone expects these mmos coming out to be perfect on the first release, that would be so boring though IMO, because there is no anticipation for anything new, ever. People should take their time leveling and enjoying the game rather than already thinking about quitting less than a month after its release. ~_~

Sorry I don’t see how that is possible if you’ve played every day since prelaunch and still are only level 21, you’d have to afk/stand around for hours a day or are only playing for like 30 minutes a day. You can get to level ~15 just by exploring the main towns (if XP rated didn’t change from beta).

Level 21 takes about 10-15 hours, and i’m being generous. It’s been 18 days since prelaunch, so that means you’d have to play roughly 30-45 minutes a day, which is far less than most people are going to play a new MMO. I think I got level 26 the night of the prelaunch (and I wasn’t rushing.. I just played for ~12 hours straight because it was fun). Virtually everything you do gives you tons of XP, I wasn’t even trying to level (ignored my level completely) and I hit 80 in 4 days after launch just by doing random stuff in the game while having fun.

Nope I don’t stand around for hours and do nothing, I go to school have homeowork here and there. When I login I quest for awhile, then when I’m not questing I’m walking around looking for waypoints ect and looking for things in the game I haven’t found out about. And when people say they are not rushing and then say they got to level cap in 4 days it makes my mind boggle. -.- my friend plays everyday after work for about 5 hours and is level 35. He quests and constantly roaming around for points getting xp. If you are playing a game for more than 12 hours a day it can basically be considered rushing, more like having way too much time on your hands, but yep and I don’t mind if people rush or have too much time on their hands, it just annoys me when they complain about having nothing to do lol

I got to level 80 on my most recent character with 90 hours of gameplay over 8 days. And I spent a lot of time on cities, WvW and whatnot. I think it is quite possible to do it much earlier than that.

Thank you!

What I love the most is how present and interactive they are. I love to see Gaile, Regina and all of the others posting and patiently dealing with our issues. And I just love how they actually listen to their players.

Some days ago, when I began receiving gold seller spam mail in the game, I sent a report ticket with a picture and a suggestion of a report mail functionality. Later that day I saw few players suggesting the same in community forums. The following day it was already in the game.

A while ago as well, some people made some posts about how they found the repeating queue pop ups annoying in overflow, and Arenanet gave us the “leave queue” option shortly after.

I mean, when we see things like this happening, as small as they may be, we already know that we’re not dealing with some of those ivory-tower developers who listen to no one but themselves. And we also know that they really are good at gathering important information and communicating that to developers themselves.

Heck, call me a fanboy if you will, but it’s hard not to be one when you’re dealing with people who make you feel that comfortable. I am willing to put all of my faith on this company.

It just takes a single hit to an enemy to have the chance of getting loot. There are no pure support/tank roles in the game, so everyone gets loot.

Might as well be the risen bovines in Orr having their lower-quality milk being sold for cheap. Explains why some zombies carry butter.
