It is somewhat true though. English is quite a mess when it comes to pronounciation, and it not always obvious how to speak when it comes to certain words even because of the lack of accent marks. :| It’s especially annoying for non-native speakers.
english is comparatively easy in this regard. But every written language is “a mess” if I may use your term. There is no real connection between sign and sound, every language uses a different system of arbitrary representation.
Not very true at all. I know Portuguese, Spanish and some German and pretty much everything is straight-forward read as it is written, unlike in English. Few exceptions are French-borrowed words in German, but it’s quite eaay to know how to pronounce nonetheless.
No, letters represent arbitrary sounds. I am German myself and there is no metaphysical connection between the letter and the sound or rather sounds in different contexts in that language. I know what you mean, in e.g. German, context does not change the sound a letter represents as much as in english or “worse” french, but still the connection between the written system of signs and the sounds are arbitrary, but agreed upon by the collective. Trust me on this as a M.A. in philologies, this may sound really abstract, but it is basic linguistical knowledge (not trying to belittle your opinion in any way).
Yes, I understand that the written language is an arbitrary construction to make everything ‘roughly’ covered through the same rules previously agreed upon in order to have intelligible written communication. And it may indeed not be quite possible in some situations. It just seems like a sloppy work when I come to English (there seems to be more exceptions than rules) and get to words such as “quay”. Surely it may be something easy for people who live and breathe that language everyday to understand, but for foreigners to learn it is quite annoying.
My first point was, why can’t there be accentuation marks in English? Where in “police” is it implied that it must be pronounced as “poleeeeeece”? Surely it might be my own lack of knowledge on the language, and I really am no expert on linguistics, but the world would be a better place if they had something pointing out where the accentuation goes. It just seemed practically a lot easier to learn how to pronounce words in German than in English.
Then we have a gazillion words in which they can’t possibly expect everyone to be an expert on etymology to know how to pronounce.
Oh, I am with you there, if I had my way, we would just forget about the traditional alphabets and write in ipa (an international linguistic sign system that denotates the actual voiced sound). It is as easy to learn as the alphabets and much easier to use. But I doubt we will see that happen for generations, if ever
Most weird pronounciations like “quay” usually have some historical component to them, that goes for the whole french language where at some point the development of written signs and voiced language divided a lot – things like that usually happen when authorities dictate a strict system for written language or “official language” while the spoken language follows the normal rules of organic development – but enough of this, have fun playing!
Oh well, I guess I should stay away from French then! Thanks for the clarifications.
I usually just see it on overflow servers, not on my server itself.

As to my main point, some stat combinations simply don’t exist. To name one, Toughness, Vitality, Healing power, anyone? How about toughness, vitality, condition damage?
Why can’t we just tie certain stats to certain crafting items and throw them into the recipes, and allow us to craft gear tailored to the playstyle we so choose?
.
Bloody hell. Do you realize that you’d have to give players 63 different recipes for the same tier of item in order to have every single stat combination available, right?
Speaking of poor pronunciation, in one of the dialogue scenes of my Silvari personal story, one of the NPC voice-actors pronounced the word ‘quay’ as ‘kway’ rather than the correct pronunciation ‘key’. It totally jarred me from my immersion in the story. If they are going to spend so much money on voice acting, the least they could do is check the pronunciation.
This is exactly what I am talking about. Why in the world would “quay” be pronounced as “key”? Why isn’t that implied on its written form?

Uh, what? Are we playing the same game?
I don’t think we need duels. But Iam not against it as long as it is not available in PVE areas. As I’d get random idiots harassing me to duel in other MMO’s when all I wanted to do was quest or hunt for mats in peace.
As you get idiots harassing you with party and guild invites. So should we have no guild/party systems because people have the option to randomly invite?
There is no point to duels if you can’t do it in PvE.
I don’t know why people request even further camera distance, it already feels like you’re playing on of those isometric games at max distance.
Oh no! What will we do if people are allowed to play how they want? It wouldent be forced so why would it matter to you? I guess youve never tried to WvWvW a seige weapon at an awkward angle and unable to fire correctly due to not being able to zoom out enough. We arnt talking about zooming out till we can see the whole battlefield. Just 2-3 clicks further so we can actually play the game in all situations.
Thanks for the arrogance, I just needed the clarification though.
There is also a very small chance of getting an endless tonic from the chests.
Really? That is great, I had no idea.
Lucky, got an answer from Colin himself. :o
@Cherry
You’re not only offering an alternative, you claimed that duels are “covered” (if I got that right). That is hardly a very viable option, really. I don’t think it is fair that we have to stop whatever we are doing, go to the mists, find an empty map and find each other there hoping that no one else joins to break the party. What harm would there be if we could just duel each other instead?

As for FoV, well, if there is no harm to everyone else, then it seems fine to get it working.
Already been suggested, already been noted. We’ve heard they’re “working on it”. Not much else to be said.

They’ve already said that you’re supposed to report as “spamming” for the desired result. Spread the word.
and if you want to Duel go choose an empty sPVP map.
That is such a horrible alternative it’s not even funny. I wonder why people keep on bringing that up. Those maps are made for large scale capture-the-point play, not dueling. It is amazing that so many people oppose dueling so fiercely when it’s a feature they could just ignore if implemented.
That’s interesting, I’d never noticed that.
Get a warrior. :P
I just wished this game wasn’t a zombie apocalypse from 50+ I’d love to see other level 50+ monsters you know variety then undead 24/7. Or make an Asura invent the nuclear bomb or invent the machine gun/shotgun.
There are high level areas aside of Orr, you know.
The bugs are more distracting for me than anything else in the zones past 50. I have no boredom issue, but it is very irritating when numerous DEs are bugged, and even hearts are bugged, in a 50+ zone. It’s clear these zones are much buggier than the lower level zones.
Those zones didn’t go through the pre-purchase beta testing, hence the issues. I suppose they’ll be fixed in time.

The gem store is there for exactly that.
this game is very PvP focuses, with some PvE content.
Uh…no.
I agree to making them account wide. Spending nearly 5g on ONE dye for it to be only usable on one character is a bit much.
There is no dye costing that much. And if you don’t want to do it, don’t. No one is forcing you to. Buy a similar shade and move on. People who are obsessive over little details will always pay more.
They’ve already been over this a million times, and they’ve already given us the final answer that it is not going to happen. Get over it, folks. In GW we lived with getting a single dye for every piece of equipment we wore, this is heaven in comparison.
Why anyone would oppose that is because people tend to be completely oblivious to other people around them. Players who like to kill time dueling seem to enjoy doing it in populated areas where they can be seen. They have no consideration and no self-control.
I’ve had enough of this behavior to last me a lifetime.
I really have no idea on why this would bother you. It is no worse than people spamming skills in town.
If it exists, exposing it is just telling people how to overcome it. It sort of loses the point.
allow players to post items 1 copper below vender price, it will help the servers and the players

Who in the world would purchase something, go to the black lion NPC to grab it, then look for a vendor for 1c profit when they waste coin left and right on waypoints and everything else? These things are cheap because crafted goods are worthless, not because there is some sort of trend among players. People are overdoing crafting (for experience, and nothing else), and crafting is really worthless when everyone does it.
While I’m all for more PvP options, I certainly wouldn’t want to see a “duel” option enter the PvE section of the game. The ability to duel one-on-one in PvP is one thing, but PvE should definitely be free of that kind of stuff.
As I roleplayer, I’d love to see duels in PvE. I don’t see the harm, or why anyone would oppose that.
. Condition damage only requires one which leaves stat points free to allotted into toughness, vitality, and healing. So while condition damage might not be as fast (depending on the type) it allows for those players to be equally as defensive.
Not necessarily. Most condition builds make use of traits that proc on critical. And in the end you need to survive for long enough to have the long-term damage kill the enemy before he does it to you.
I’m quite sure they did reveal the map too. It was a lot better that way, in my opinion.
Well, Gaile and Regina seem to be pretty active here. But yes, would be nice to hear of their plans. If we are allowed to hear, that is.
I am quite sure that it does, from what I have seen.
It shouldn’t be difficult if you’ve played WASD MMORPGs or FPS games before. The targetting system is identical to GW, I don’t get why you’re having problems with that.
50 vials of potent blood in HALF AN HOUR? WHERE are you farming?
The one you feel like playing?
I don’t get what you mean. White dye is in the game.
I have no issues with necro, and I play one myself. Although yes, minions can be annoying at times.
Not slow for your level, although there are probably easier ways if you intend to focus solely on getting money. And 6G is a great sum for your level as well.
I wanted “Daphne” and “Rose” for potential sylvari characters, and I was there waiting for the game to go live so I could grab them. They were both taken within 2 minutes of the servers going up…
“Rose” was easily taken within 2 seconds actually.
PvP videos = tournaments. Hot join PvP is unorganized zergfest by definition and will always be.
What in the world is this thread supposed to be?
It’s the only thing I’m missing to complete the map. I don’t want to wake up at 5am to do it. Please fix it.
Every time I open a loot bag and I get cloth, leather, ore or rare crafting materials I feel like Fabio.
I can’t believe I’m laughing at this.
GW2’s dungeons are by far my least favorite thing about the game. They are unfocused, way too chaotic, and sometimes agonizing.
That’s really what they’re like when you don’t have an organized team to do them.
Or make it like in WvW, in which only the enemy has their colors altered. I don’t understand why it’s different in PvP.
I agree with this.
Your point gains are more influenced by your contribution to the match rather than whether or not you win. You don’t lose your point earnings when the match gets autobalanced. People leaving is not an issue because they’re usually replaced pretty quickly and you still fall back on autobalancing if they are not replaced. Conversely, if you earned a large number of points suddenly as the result of a few minutes of imbalance in your favor, then it is not remotely unfair for you to have to face an even team after autobalancing win or lose. There’s just nothing to fix here.
Well, there is a win bonus, albeit minor.
People leaving really can be an issue though, it’s especially annoying in (hot join) tournaments.
I think gold sinks have been surprisingly efficient so far, and I don’t think that inflation will be a problem for a good while. Everything is cheap and accessible. Perhaps even too cheap given that most things are sold at floor value in the TP. I suppose that a global market also helps with this, as it is harder to shake down.
In my view Gold-Gem conversion rates are your basic inflation meter, and it’s been doing fine.
5 minutes is a bit harsh. 10-15 is more applicable I think.
It really does get annoying in sPvP and WvW though. Especially when there are three hour-long queues on the latter.
My wife got this off of reddit. I guess this is the difference between abyss and “black”.

That’s a very helpful chart. I’d like to see one for the white dyes as well.
Incidentally, let me give out some helpful advice: The “Mithril” dye appears white on a lot of inherently lighter textures, and is VASTLY cheaper than “White”, let alone “Celestial” at the moment.
It’s not brilliant, snowy white, but good enough in most kinds of lighting. It’s a decent, affordable stop-gap solution until you’re willing to shell out for one of the others. Here’s some screens. Can you tell?
Time to run to get it before the price skyrockets.
