I agree with Miku. A little after the april feature patch, I was doing CM. We had an Engineer with 17,000 AP who had Legendaries and a Commander tag (which he didn’t turn off).

He proceeded to camp Flamethrower the entire dungeon.

Okay, I just checked this out myself. It’s literally just a pen and paper overlay.

Imagine printing yourself a notebook checklist that has each page with every daily thing you need. Everyday, you flip to a new page and cross off things that you’ve done.

BAM, no second monitor.

If you need to figure out what rewards you get, well.. most people memorize that if they’re doing it daily. But you can write that down next to each item on the paper.

As for the “time until next daily”. That’s… that’s just basic math. You don’t even need a calculator for that. The game has an ingame clock that you can set to Server Time and then check how much time it is until 5 PM (if you’re on NA).

I do believe all GW2 Overlays require you to be running in full-screen windowed (or simply windowed) to allow the application to overlay itself properly. If you run in full-screen mode, the application will not be able to display itself on top since GW2 will be on front of everything.

Making a video with fraps however will not show those overlays .. however we had a video of that overwolf stuff ..

I haven’t watched the video or anything but it’s possible to use other software to record directly from your screen instead of recording the application’s window (which is what Fraps does).

For example, a pretty underrated tool (albeit old) was once worked on by Microsoft

The first Guild Wars had even worse class balancing than this game. So… no, we don’t need a dual-class system.

Yes, we don’t need a dual class system but that doesn’t mean it won’t come about because new players like that kind of thing.

I mean, it is a possibility. Anything to keep new players coming to the game, right?

Doubt it.

Plus the entire Profession system was made to not revolve around dual-spec. GW1 system was made to include it and it did it well.

Sure, your playstyle involves obtaining the shiny new thing. That’s fine.

Sure, real money may get you to your goal easier than everything else.

However, the “normal” methods are not unrealistic or slow. If you’re talking about the Gem Store, don’t bring up Gold to Gems. If you’re talking about Pay to Win, first off, separate the cash shop from the non-CS players. If you don’t want to throw your wallet at Arenanet, then you have to realize that your playstyle will involve nothing bought from the Gem Store.

After that, realize that everything in the Gem Store is either convenience, aesthetics, or fun/silly items.

You don’t need convenience to surpass others.

You don’t need to be pretty to surpass others (perhaps in a beauty contest, but that’s a niche playstyle which involves obtaining lots of skins, see: expensive).

You don’t need to have for fun/silly items to surpass others.

Yes, you can throw your money at the game and get more things than players who spend their time obtaining them. That’s true, but you won’t succeed unless your playstyle doesn’t actually involve any of the combat styles of the game (see: winning).

You don’t need to get a skin to beat other players or bosses. In Maplestory, you DO need to get godly items to beat other players or bosses.

Sure, you might not enjoy having only one bank tab. That’s understandable. You might also not enjoy using characters for bank space. That’s also understandable. However, if you are going to go down the route of playing as a person who puts themselves into a position where it’s “I need this, but I don’t want to get this because it’s more efficient to spend real money” you might need to re-evaluate your gaming style or your game.

It’s been more efficient to get gold via real money for over a year. If you wanted the most efficient method of getting gold, it would be to get a part time job (or even a full time job). You use that money to get gold. Now, obviously, most players don’t like that idea at all, but it’s real and it exists.

Now, just to play the devil’s advocate, think about this:

If you spend a few hours ingame doing dungeons and playing the TP (while doing dungeons), you can earn yourself a shiny penny, upwards of 10-20g in a few hours. Even more if you’re very efficient at what you do. You’ve worked for that gold and you’ve earned it.

If you spend a few hours at work doing whatever your job description requires, you can earn yourself a shiny penny, at least $5 an hour (mowing Aunt Lizzie’s lawn. If she’s cheap, then maybe you should re-evaluate your job). Even more if you’re very efficient at what you do. You’ve worked for that money and you’ve earned it.

Sure, if the person who worked ingame wanted to buy something from the Gem Store, they would be in for a bad time. That’s true.

Sure, if the person who worked in reality wanted to buy something in the Trading Post, they would be in for an easy time. That’s also true.

But did neither of them earn their currencies?

If they both spend their ingame currencies on obtaining a Legendary, then both of them will have earned it through dedication and hard work.

However, only one of them would actually have the skills to show that they’re good. The other, however, would have a job and therefore isn’t any worse than the first player.

While Gem→Gold may interfere with your playstyle, keep in mind that the currency exchange is based on how much people use either side. The reason why it’s so expensive is because most players don’t buy gold with gems. Next time you see someone with a Legendary, try to figure out if they bought it with gold, gems, or made it themselves. If you do that with every player you see with a Legendary, I assure you, you’ll rarely find the casual whale.

Additionally, and this is the main point, spending real money will not give you any advantage over another player unless you count looking swag as being an advantage.

But haven’t you ever heard that being fashionable isn’t cheap?

Mobs in Starter Zones Lie

I’ve been wandering around in starter zones, only finding that the mobs don’t do what the game says they do. A drake in Ashford Plains don’t do knockback, Forest Spiders in Queensdale don’t poison, and Sons of Svanir in Wayfarer Foothills don’t freeze and bleed, but they do knockback and cripple. I’ve come across a Son of Svanir, the abilities it said was knockback and bleed, but he only did knockback.

Fish in Metricas first lake (barracudas iirc) said they"bleed/ sumoned allies"

they never did

before the update

think they are gone now

probably due to misbehavior ;P

It was like that before the update.

Actually, the majority of barracudas stopped spawning more barracudas because it became an endless loot farm (since the spawned barracudas also had the spawn barracuda skill and also dropped loot).

:/

Still happens with some wolves.

Why not just add a way to disable kicking completely, possibly by vote, until the party is shut down?

Party options with either Democratic or Monarch leadership options.

Democratic options involve unanimous voting to convert systems/kick (other than the kicked person).

Monarch options have Party Leader. Party Leader is the #juantruegod of the party and has complete control.

Players will be notified of party options upon joining the party and may review the options at any time by right clicking on any party member.

When a word has an accepted meaning, you just can’t go and single handedly change the meaning to suit yourself.

So we agree then. You can’t just go changing the meaning of “Pay to Win” to ONLY refer to PvP scenarios.

Can you find a definition where it means other then PvP? Every place I looked refers to buying an advantage in PvP. I’ve certainly never seen one where it means to buy cosmetics and strut around thinking you are styling.

I don’t agree with either of you in this, because I agree with both of you.

Pay to Win involves gaining a distinct advantage over other players, be it through bypassing a grind or outright becoming stronger than players who do not pay.

Typically this is used in PvP because in PvE, you’re not going to brag about being stronger than the guy next to you. I mean, you can’t really shove it into their faces (unless you’re going to oneshot lupi via reflects, but even that isn’t really brag-worthy).

However, there are games without PvP where Pay to Win exists (See: Maplestory) as a Paywall that can be bypassed through extreme dedication. In Maplestory, to get “godly” items is entirely possible for non-paying players, however by paying (hundreds of dollars) you can get lucky and get good rolls on your items. To get them without paying, you must loot them (think the chance of a precursor without being able to use Mystic Forge) or wait for an event and get certain scrolls from the event to roll the item. Usually it takes a few hundred scrolls to get lucky since you are rolling the odds (scrolls are similar to Mystic Forging for a Precursor), however there is a hardcap to how many scrolls you can get per event (as far as I can recall in the Global server).

So while a player may say that they became super strong (hitting max damage with every hit) without paying a single dollar to Nexon, the amount of those players is similar to the amount of players who have every Legendary without having ever gotten a Precursor off the TP, Mail, Guild Bank, and Mystic Forge.

Pay to Win simply implies that there is a Paywall that exists. In Guild Wars 2, there is no Paywall. You can be the strongest you possibly can without ever paying, and if you do pay, you don’t expedite the process unless you’re a new player. Heck, the Combat in GW2 entirely defeats the purpose of funding a character with real money because you still have to know the skills, combinations, enemy animations, enemy skills, and more. You can easily be a player who jumps into the game, spends real money to get a Commander tag, buys a Legendary or two and then has “beaten the game”. Sure, but can you roam solo/small groups in WvW? Can you tPvP? Can you speedrun or solo dungeon paths? Do you know your Profession Mechanics?

There is nothing you can buy in the Gemstore that will give you a distinct advantage over a player who has not bought things from the Gemstore. If you consider purchasing Gold a distinct advantage or Paywall, that is fine and you are correct in stating that GW2 has become a Pay to Win game.

But what can Gold get you that experience can’t? You can only buy up to Exotic gear (or Legendaries/Ascended materials) and the crafts to 500. However, rushing your craft to 500 and getting Ascended isn’t going to make a difference if you don’t know how to play your Profession. You can succeed in WvW with no gear, due to the average skill of players there. You can succeed in PvE with little to no gear (Zerker stats only give you armor and more damage, meaning you could theoretically run naked and you’d mostly only be fighting longer) or even wearing Greens. Greens are what the game was balanced around initially. Rares were nice, and Exotics were the BiS for the “hardcore” Players, even though it was/is so easy to get. Ascended is now the BiS for hardcore players, and Exotics are the norm, but nobody will be the wiser if you are running around in Green or Yellow gear.

The closest to Pay to Win that you can argue about in GW2 is the Watchwork Mining Pick giving you an advantage to other players, however Watchwork Sprockets are not necessary to surpass another player and therefore doesn’t push the game to the Pay to Win sector.

Don’t even talk about Boosters, please, they have negligible effects, as do Primers.

Fractals don’t necessarily require you to be level 80, but most groups won’t take underleveled players, especially if they’re new. The bag is aimed towards low level players who are starting their adventure, with a lot of the spoons being low level rewards.

Then they decided to add high level spoons, such as level 75 karma reward, teq spoon, and fractal spoon.

The reward and the requirements don’t line up. It looks like there wasn’t a lot of discussion about this or someone decided to troll it at the last moment.

PvE mesmer post patch...

in Mesmer

Posted by: Esplen.3940

Esplen.3940

Mesmer in CM is bad because Warden no longer reflects all projectiles while traited. For example, the Grenadier boss will toss grenades past your Wardens if they’re traited.

Kind of defeats the purpose of being a Mesmer in a dungeon full of projectiles.

Also, the 2/4/0/5/3 build is pure Phantasm damage, meaning your dps will be significantly bad. It does provide support, but the 64040/64004 build will improve your DPS, which is included in all reflects done, even by your Phantasms.

Assuming the projectile reflects work, the 640xx build is stronger.

Assuming they don’t work, the 640xx build is still stronger.

Assuming the destructs work, the 24053 build is stronger, except, you know, you’re not traiting into Warden’s, making it useless.

[Q&A]Mimic & Arcane Thievery / a boon build

in Mesmer

Posted by: Esplen.3940

Esplen.3940

The practical applications of building around stealing/copying isn’t very useful.

The practical application of slotting stealing or copying for a quick fight is plausible.

The practical application of camping Mimic as a utility is only viable for a sustained battle held against a mob such as Andal where he has 6 stacks of Might (this is REAL Might and therefore steal/copy-able).

If you camp Mimic, you can steal 25 stacks of Might and then share it to your party via Signet of Inspiration. If you use Arcane Thievery you only get 3-6 stacks of Might.

Keep in mind, these stacks of Might can and will get overrode by allies granting Might, so be sure to warn your allies of this.

Swiftness Calculation

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Esplen.3940

Esplen.3940

I believe there’s a limit to how many “instances” of swiftness you can have (think bleeding stacks but hidden). As such, it’s better to have long lasting swiftness applied versus lots of little amounts. The 20s is definitely good, paired with swiftness duration (or boon duration).

I would suggest, if you are just running around in PvE, to get as many points (preferably 30) into the traitline giving you boon duration. The runes will all grant a bonus effect upon getting struck or using a heal skill, so be wary as that may harm your swiftness stacking (only initially).

Using only Sigil of Speed, I have obtained upwards of 4 minutes of swiftness on myself. When I transfer the boon using Signet of Inspiration, it grants only 1m45s of swiftness to allies around me, however that counts as one “instance” and I can constantly transfer it (just under 3 times) in that duration.

For food, I would suggest boon duration food instead.

So about Mimic...

Rollback on changes ETA?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Esplen.3940

Esplen.3940

Actually they may very well care what players think. But some players don’t think the changes are bad and I’m one of them. I didn’t like the initial trait changes, and think they need work. But this recent change is better for me as an altoholic.

OP, you might not understand why, but I wouldn’t want to go back to how it was. I prefer this current method (though the trait system still needs serious adjustment).

you like it because you are a collector, and like reinforcement for goals. They could have appeased you without alienating so many others though.

Actually my favorite part of the new patch so far is the new leveling experience, not the collections.

The small changes are nice, the big ones aren’t.

I noticed a popup showing me how to dodge (on my level 80 Mesmer while sitting outside Caudecus’ Manor). I headed over to the location and it showed a Ring with a Chest in the center. An NPC states that it would be dandy if you could get to the chest, perhaps by rolling past the circle.

I did it and got rewarded with some blue shoes that were level 0. It really brought back the feeling of the training area in Elona where you pick your secondary profession. I liked it, but the thing is…

I still don’t think you should forcibly level-gate. I understand introducing things one at a time, but you don’t need to turn them off. Downed state being turned off is actually really annoying to me. Why? Because the combat sort of revolves around the player having that second health bar.

While I do agree, in respect to the downed state, it can be very confusing, frustrating, and unintuitive; I have stated my resolution to that problem multiple times. Add the skills to your weapon skills so you can read up on them. Perhaps add a tutorial downed state, similar to the dodge roll in Queensdale, to allow players to see, first hand, how downed works and play around with it. Obviously, they would have to create a scenario where players would regenerate just enough health to not die while downed, but also notice that they’re getting hurt.

The skills unlocking slower seemed like a big deal at first, but then I sort of went with it and realized it was kind of fun getting a new skill as I leveled up, instead of by killing things. However, disallowing offhand weapons until level 7 kind of ruins the point of having offhands lower than level 7. Additionally, the stat disparity between one and two handeds becomes more apparent (half the stats), making newer players benefit greatly from wearing their two handed option instead. This isn’t a big deal, but most newer players won’t know this, and it can potentially make the game harder.

I think they had the right idea introducing things one at a time, through the level-up menu, but by gating things (even more), and also playing around with the stats, they inadvertently screwed things up.

A lot of these changes are fine by themselves, but I think together, they are not what the game or newer players need. Especially when put in the context of the game’s systems (downleveling, scaling, etc paired with stat lumps on level-up instead of slow growth).

[PvX] Some problems with Mesmer changes

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Esplen.3940

Esplen.3940

I think we’ve got some issues to address.

What am I talking about? Well of course, I’m talking about the Torment changes. This change has put both PU and non PU builds which rely on full condition builds, aka defensive and condition stats. Yes, this change even makes viable the full condition Mesmer which doesn’t NEEED to abuse PU. PU helps it take the cake though.

PU gets more dps out of Staff clones utilizing IE than dropping 3 Scepter clones. If you have 3 Scepter clones out, you have a constant buffer of Torment, yes, but you have no other application of conditions unless you yourself are on a different weapon (namely Staff, which doesn’t apply conditions that fast). If you are using the Scepter3 + Block combo to apply conditions, it doesn’t maintain 100% uptime and is really more of a condition burst due to all of the restraints on it’s use. Again, the buffer only helps for a few seconds here.

We tested this build, folks. It overpowers meta ele, necro, warrior… Wait yes, it overpowers everything in a 1v1. And to you people saying “oh meh gewd. 1v1 no skill. Mech wew. Sech cemplen.” Think about the other things that this new condition spamming class can do. It can transfer and steal boons like like liquid, solo survive outside of stealth and overpower all forms of condition removal.

I agree, Mesmer should get balanced around 1v1’s. Because this hasn’t ruined Mesmers at all…

Oh and Mesmers aren’t going to be transferring and stealing boons like liquid. We have one boon steal and one boon transfer (and now one boon copy). All of these are on high cooldowns, even while traited, making them unfeasible in most scenario’s (Mimic can be useful against a boon-spammer but got hit partially by the Light Aura snipe).

There’s my peace on our issue number one. There’s more. Yes there’s more.

Folks, who rejoiced at the nerf of PU? I know I did. It was supposed to be watered down but not rendered ineffective. The change didn’t work. We tested this, and yes, this just in, perma protection, everfrequent blocks and the like were still available. But thats not all… This similarly effective post “nerf” PU stinks even more because it is actually just new and improved. Tack on swiftness and might to your perma protection, and you’ve literally just stuck your sword in 1v1ers.

Yes! Finally! Someone who understands just how strong 5 seconds of Might every 1 second is. At best, we have 5 stacks of Might after being in Stealth for 5 seconds, oh wait no, make that 4 stacks. Nope, 3… nope 2… oh, we don’t have any Might. Oh, we also didn’t get any Prot or Aegis. Yay.

Oh man, that 3s of Swiftness sure helped me outrun all of those leaps and teleports. Yehp, made me a lot stronger than Protection and Aegis ever could.

I’m sure there’s others who don’t appreciate this type of balance. Make yourselves heard.

Have fun with your tested 6/6/6/6/6 build. I hear it’ll get nerfed in 2029.

Am I the only person who has dupes that are withdrawn? Seriously…?

Seriously, I don’t want to have to hold my Risen Priests of Balthazar (yeah, I can convert them into Shards), Queen Jennahs, and other dupes in my bank. It’s really sucky and makes me feel like you’re punishing me for taking my mini’s out of the bank to unlock them in the account… after I’ve already done just that.

I agree, the 6/6/6/6/6 build is really stronk. Quick, let’s go nerf leveling so we don’t see as many Mesmers.

Buff mimic. I want to mimic allies.

Would give it a purpose in PvE other than cheesing Andal.

Is one of you on an NA server while the other is on an EU server?

If not, you were probably on the same map. The right-click to join is to join the server, not join the location. You still have to meet up.

I love GW2. All the hate I give Anet is for my love/want of GW2 to grow. I just hope that they have as much insight into the future of the game as I give them credit (in my heart). Otherwise, my cynicism will be right.

Keep in mind, if you’re in PvE, it’s possible for a final shatter to actually hurt your dps.

If your Phantasms are not melee, then the runtime may end up cutting into their attack cycle, and potentially hurt dps (see Duelists). Additionally, in fights like Champion Entities (Arah P1), you can maintain 3 Clones for the entire fight (before tomorrow) by standing at the cliff and spawning 3 sword clones while targeting a drake. The sword clones will stay alive as long as you don’t run past the far side of the light.

With 3 clones up at all times, you can trait things like 10% damage (9%? 3%^3?), -10% damage (-9%? -9%^3?), +30% speed (33%? +10%^3?) and run Signet of the Ether for 1khp/s.

Sure, you don’t get that sweet, sweet Mind Wrack burst, but you do get survivability and an inherent dps boost.

No information is provided on whether or not Sylvari excrete solid waste though, although my presumption is that they do. (Otherwise their bodies would just build up with indigestibles over a long period of time.)

They could excrete by sweat or exuding chemicals.

Try pugging without being a guardian… You’ll notice the huge difference between amount of time and effort need to finish any paths… story of my life

Idk, I’m a Mesmer and I’m used to soloing most encounters. I just assume some people can do dps and some people can’t. As long as they don’t make it harder for me to do my Guardian Mesmer duty, I don’t mind.

Is it a bad dps?

with most ascended pieces 30k is normal, fully buffed can usually hit 40-50k on Alpha (CoE boss). The GS auto hits should be slightly higher than axe at around 2-6k damage (6k is fully buffed).

I think OP talks about selfbuffed when you for example kill a solo mob, and those numbers are not normal in that scenario. Its more like 12-15k with 100b maybe
and axe auto-attack is around 1,7 -2k

21k is easy with exotics + green trinkets running solo. Drop disc + fgj + signet of fury → forceful strikes → 1 auto → gs4 → 1 auto → gs 5 → 1 auto → 100b. If they’re against a wall, use gs3 instead of 4+5. And this is without running Runes of Strength.
