Some people take competition very seriously, the pinnacle of that is the tournament. If you’ve been following these forums you’d know and have seen the intensity of some people’s forum posts alone.

With the cost of GW2 becoming cheaper and with no additional costs involved there’s little preventing people from trolling/griefing another server except their own self-respect.

People on these very forums were more or less DEMANDING something to fix the queue-times in WvW and also wanted a new map, and we got both of those things in one sweep.

Sort of.

EotM was created specifically because WvW demand was on an unprecedented level in China pre- release so ANet needed a way to manage those numbers. EotM is really a bi-product of what current players wanted rather than what we actually wanted.

I agree with that sentiment to an extent.

PvP is a big fail, all the main guys have left, it’s been mismanaged from the ground up and impromptu GvG competed with it for popularity.

The sorts of people that mostly PvE are the kinds of people that want easy content for high rewards. Who would rather relax and take things easy.

They don’t want to PvP or WvW due to the ‘competitive’ nature of it, their competition is usually in the form of TP flipping and auto attacking at world bosses and then comparing the results.

WvW is really where the community of GW2 is made beyond the servers, 2 week updates etc. Otherwise GW2 would be the game you solo for dailies, check out new content every 2 weeks and group up once a week for guild missions.

Initially i was typing this in reply to speculating on the number of devs working on WvW. I found myself speculating as a whole on WvW development and turned up the following ideas so decided to give it its own post. In the end I wasn’t so much making a point but speculating on the ‘inner workings’ of ANet that made for interesting reading if nothing else.

How much development time does WvW get?

ANet’s focus on the Living Story gives and takes devs from work that’s required.
EotM for example, was a main focus for a time so it would have gotten the attention from A LOT of people at ANet. Resources have been placed into the China launch which has little impact on current WvW.

In Sacrx’ NDA leak he stated it was only a few guys on the ‘core’ WvW team and that everything had to go through the PvP team. If something were to go into WvW the PvP team would have to ok it first. Sacrx was later removed from the alpha test phase.

When Allie was posting she would always talk about PvP numbers in the context of WvW/PvP being the same, despite being completely different which highlights that the overlap is still there.

So all things considered this is what makes sense to me:
For example, things like Commander tag, AP in WvW etc that we have been asking for nearly 2 years now haven’t been handled because it’s not a prority (obviously) for ANet as a whole. That the handful of WvW guys are still having to work through the PvP team and the PvP element obvious cares nothing for commander tag or AP in WvW because it has nothing to do with PvP. The few WvW guys prob get pulled away to work on other projects as they are needed (LS, China release) where bigger elements get ANet attention or it swings the complete opposite and the few guys on the WvW team are stuck in a kind of maintenance mode.

So the few WvW guys get pulled from one project to the next and then (possibly?) vetoed by PvP for mid-term changes because the overarching principle of WvW is that ‘it was just supposed to be casual’ and was never incorporated in ANets business structure like PvE was or the esports that PvP was supposed to become.

WvW will probably go through ‘cycles’ of attention, most recently with Season 2/mist forge weapons due to a soon to be released mmo. So I’m not expecting anything significant to happen for WvW till well after season 2 finishes, the WvW team is currently in maintenance mode.

TLDR: Speculation on WvW development, take it or leave it.

The old match up threads were full of same/similar posts, just with more moderating and as Vyx said, trying to get reliable moderators for his site would be troublesome. A lot of people would do it only because of personal prerogatives.

I’d like to take a moment to thank Vyx for having set up the site and spending a lot of his personal time in doing so.

Additionally, going by him having to remove the report feature it sounds like he has to put up with a lot of unnecessary BS as well. Remember that before you post something stupid on the site.

There are people behind all this hard work, it doesn’t just happen. That’s how we lost our old match up threads.

EotM actually opened that up quite a bit, now guilds can play against guilds from 16 (NA) or 18 (EU) servers rather than just the 2 we had before EotM.

There’s no real spot for GvG there. The biggest open spot is RIGHT in the middle with the turrets where the PUGs congregate.

The only reason they gave us a space for GvG is because people complained that there was so many guilds doing GvG that it queue up the maps.

Guilds typically wouldn’t GvG on a full map. They would do it at a quieter time, usually towards the end of the week. GvG impact on queues/ppt were blown out of proportion by ANet and people bought into it.

Sacrx’ NDA leaked highlighted that bloodlust was introduced to unbalance WvW even more and push people towards PvP for more balanced fighting. For the longest time the WvW team had to put it’s ideas and any decisions made through the PvP team first.

OS was developed because an ANet employee openly trolled a GvG which upset the entire GvG community and highlighted many of the points raised by Sacrx.

I recently went back to EotM and was surprised just how toxic its become.

Heaven forbid if a commander breaks away from the cycle and looks for fights. Someone raged about that at one stage.

Last night there was x2 large guild groups wiping the PUGs which provided interesting map chat entertainment. Comments such as “Why don’t they just go back to WvW”. After one wipe map chat erupted again and so I dropped the bombshell of “Yea, that happens in a PvP environment”, the responses provided interesting reading too.

Tbh if your server is winning the week I encourage you all to take your guilds to EotM with intent to wipe PUGs and have full faith in the fact that you will upset many of them.

Personally I hope, it would be balanced by other changes which would make it harder for enemy forces to PvD in in the first place.

This is probably more inline with what Im thinking.

I dont agree with bannering as such but in a 2v1, bannering is a last resort of that one server getting focused.

To simply take out bannering is an over simplification of the issue imo.

Banner ress is nothing like tactical or skill intensive…Keeping it because it favors the smallest side is not a valid point.

It can also favour the biggest side losing.

It has an advantage to a smaller server in the sense that the outmanned server wont have the numbers to push the enemies garri.

Further more i went on to mention that the reduction of skill lag would go in the direction of solving the issue because spamming one has nothing to do with skill either.

Feel free to offer solutions instead of just complaining.

Are you really saying that the ability for one player to contest a keep alone so easily is balanced?

Take that away and you put the power firmly in the hands of the people with bigger numbers (see: server stacking).

Honestly the problem is skill lag from what I see. Its usually why these encounters are so drawn out. Server 1 hits server 2 hard and breaks into their garrison, BIG fight breaks out. Server 3 realizes that its missing out and wants in, skill lag ensures.

Funny Story.

Casting on a zerg on my nec i got chained immobilized. I then watched in horror as the zerg bore down on me, while nailed to the spot unable to move. The zerg, led by its commander turned to engage another group at the last moment and literally run around me.

I was saved.

Ok, maybe not that funny…….

I think what made it amusing was that I was immobilized for what seemed like an eternity. So long that I was able to have a mini conversation with myself.

“Chained immobilized.. great -.- Oh no, the zerg turned this way…. move Move! MOVE!!! Oh phew they turned away……. hey this’d make a nice screenshot (Immobilize Finish).”

It’s the twiddling your thumbs waiting for it to finish so you can keep playing that makes it so stupid to me.

But the amount of time, energy, and gold one potentially has to invest in getting just a chance at a precursor is so discouraging that it’s made me forget why I even play in the first place. It’s quite literally become the entire game to me and I’m really starting to detest it.

Personally its the WAY its achieved rather than the fact that its expensive that bothers me.

Legendary weapon holders who are not legendary players. I kill them all the time in WvW.

Precursors = Someone whose Lucky, Grindy (Gold/TP Flipping) or use rl money.

That’s it.

There’s nothing legendary about that.

I think those that wanted the change badly have (for the most part) given up on ANet pulling their finger out.

The average player moved on, made do or just forgot about its short comings.

It’s all about risk management. The “burn-down” board the scrums are working off of is being populated by deliverables that are chiefly valued by bean counters.

IMHO, we are live witnessing (here) the downward spiral of the latest in a long line…

People have traveled different paths to get here and many have witnessed splendor and innovation. For example, some have traveled through (some version of):

  • Ultima Online
  • Lineage
  • EverQuest
  • Asheron’s Call
  • Anarchy Online
  • Final Fantasy
  • Eve Online
  • City of Heros/Villains
  • World of Warcraft
  • Star Wars Galaxies
  • Dungeons & Dragons Online
  • Lord of the Rings Online
  • Age of Conan
  • Warhammer Online
  • Champions Online
  • Star Trek Online
  • Star Wars The Old Republic

…and some have traveled through them all (or even more that are not listed here).

Each reaches(ed) a plateau. RARE is it that any company can achieve the necessary support to push their (own) production product through a significant upgrade to the user experience.

I don’t deny that there are “tweeks” that enhance features that were not aligned with the original “cast in stone” (internal) expectations. I simply observe that the heritage player develops a sense of acceptance (akin to surrender) until a new innovation disrupts hir loyal play or that of the majority of hir friends.

Yes, gamers’ life and attention is limited. I would build on your statement and suggest that elite gamers’ tolerance and loyalty has explicit bounds. That boundary is influenced by both economic suitable substitutes and relationship gravity.

Game companies flirt with this risk when their product does not remain competitive in the entertainment market.

A year of waiting for a mature UI/UE for commanders is an eternity. That is a terribly long time for angst to build over stupidly simple things like chat suppression, pin colors, etc..

Add to that lag issues, rubber-banding, disconnects, and skill nullification — and the pump is primed for a mass exodus or population disruption as soon as the next mass combat offering is released.

To date, there has yet to release a “new” or “viable” (forward looking) alternative to WvW.

ANet doesn’t care, ultimately because it doesn’t have to. ESO mass PvP turned a few heads but it has also failed to impress many. Camelot Unchained isn’t until late next year so ANet can still afford to drag its feet.

This definitely exists.

A guildy of mine got 4 precursors in one week.

He was actively trying to get rid of his gold buying quality of life products that were incredibly expensive. He would buy a heap of exotics, just to get another precursor in the toilet.

There was a time when I would have wished them a sincere congratulations but that time has past. Nowadays I resent how precursors drop and how some people are blessed with them.

Many months ago in threads similar people talked about how there should be ‘streak breaker’ code that prevents players from getting drops so close to one another and distribute the drops better.

Given however, how sigils, runes etc haven’t worked properly since release. It’s impossible to think they got RNG working correctly.
