Seriously, every mac user playing GW2 should really install Windows on bootcamp, it’s incredibly 100 times powerful ! After 2 years playing on Mac, I recently installed it on Windows because it was really painful, and “waw !”, just do it ! :p
Yes it is much better on windows. But not everyone has windows, has space for windows, wants windows, can afford windows etc.
I don’t think it would be a good idea. The graphics card in the 5K iMac isn’t overly good, and in order to drive the 5K display it has to use a LOT of it’s graphics/processing power (in fact the graphics card it has is arguably worse than the Nvidia card found in the regular high end 27"). I think if you do a little bit of research it actually has worse performance than the regular non-5K iMacs. Bottom line – a 5K screen is ridiculous. Sure it’s going to look gorgeous, but the amount of power and resources needed to drive the screen is going to hinder the computers capabilities.
I don’t see how it could be too thick to be a scroll. the strip up the top would be the top part of the scroll curving over, hence it is lighter in colour – it is directly exposed to light, meanwhile there is a shadow gradient underneath that part, which would be the shadow cast by that curling piece. Not to say that is HAS to be a scroll, just pointing out that I don’t think it’s too thick to be one.
But then in the lore forums we were specifically told that anything not in game isn’t canon and is subject to change. So there’s that…
The only other thing I could make out of it was the side of a horn or something :S?
Mavericks was a decent improvement on Mountain Lion. Yosemite is beautiful, but there is some UI lag (it’s not obtrusive, just a bit annoying to have the volume notification thingy pop up 5 seconds after you’ve pressed it) and things don’t quite work perfectly yet. I’m still really bitter about them no longer using cat names. Actually I’m mostly bitter that they’re using Californian places as OS names on a worldwide OS.
They outright confirmed that shifting around the story steps was intentional. The fact that there are now a ton of inconsistencies is not a bug, it’s simply things that they didn’t even bother to fix. Which is just ridiculous, obviously the story doesn’t matter to them…
If they KNEW there were things left to do and they cared about it they would not have updated the way the story is. They never used to be afraid of saying “when it’s ready”, there’s no reason they absolutely had to ship those updates when they did. There’s not really a good excuse for putting out an update that breaks the storyline so obviously
The symbol kind of looks like a piece of paper/scroll to me.
I absolutely refuse to play any of my alts until this is fixed. Not that Anet would blink an eye over that, but still, I’m not going to go through a storyline that no longer makes sense when I know that it was originally far far better the way it was (I mean still not a great storyline but at least it made chronological and sequential sense).
There’s no way for you to make the interface larger than the largest setting – and I wouldn’t expect them to accommodate your resolution any time soon. Most people are playing on screens with much much lower resolutions.
Also if you delete the .dat you will have to redownload the entire client again, which is around 20GB’s of data. Worth pointing out since for a lot of people that’s a) going to take a long time and b) use a large chunk of data allowance.
The wiki is your friend – you can type in the names of areas, PoI’s, towns, NPC’s, quests, etc – and it will usually give you an idea of how to get there
wiki.guildwars2.com
What are the graphics cards on both of those computers? Out of curiosity. e.g., are they both Nvidia cards?
I can’t think of a single vista that I was “stuck” at once viewed.
I think there is one in Rata Sum where you have to WP out or jump to your death (and then WP out :-P). But a) that’s the only one I can think of and b) WPs are free in cities, so no problem.
Ahh yes, the one you jump down to and are left with no way back up?
I hope they change the mad king realm back to how it was the first year, last year they completely ruined it imo.
I completely agree. Halloween was way way better the first year. I did not enjoy it last year…
@Brutality, that’s not quite true. I can think of at least one P2P MMO out there with incredible graphics… But GW2 certainly does have great graphics as well.
I was ready to come and tell someone off for whining. But all of these are actually completely reasonable. +1 for rational requests/questions.
But don’t they make it known that there is travel between those areas, properity is not completely isolated – scarlet managed to get there after all, so did we. So I don’t see why they would be expected to be of pure Krystal lineage if they clearly have contact with the rest of tyria.
The enjoyment of map completion is the enjoyment that most people who are completionists feel regardless of any material reward. Sorry you didn’t feel like you were given enough things, but for me it was plenty and I was more happy with the actual sense of achievement than with any reward.
Perhaps the wiki could work on getting that chart isolated and in a more prominent place :/?
Actually I think this is a good idea. It was great in GW1 to be able to go on the wiki and see what the Zaishen activities for the next day would be.
That’s a great catch Kesvalk. It’s definitely GW2 concept art and it does look a lot like Kaineng.
In present day Tyria it might be a bit of a stretch – but the abundance of Bone Dragons in GW1 suggests that it might have been feasible at some point in the past (as in, dragons – of the lesser kind – could once have been far more commonplace in Tyria than they have been within the last 250 years).
You can try doing this: you can try to delete the contents of the gw2 data folder, it’s a pain to get to the right one: this step is a general fix for many tp and graphics issues, even without the previous steps however, it will lose all saved log in/password and in-game settings.
To access this:
1 Click on the “Finder” icon located in your dock or the desktop of your computer to make “Finder” the active program in the finder menu bar.
2 Hold down the “Option” key on your keyboard while clicking “Go” in the finder menu bar. A drop-down will appear.
3 While still holding down the “Option” key, click on “Library” in the “Go” drop-down.
4 Once in the Library folder click on Application Support > Guild Wars 2
5 Move the entire Guild Wars 2 folder to the trash and then empty the trash.
The next time you launch Guild Wars 2 it will recreate the recently deleted folder.
What that does is force the game to redownload the launcher files (but all of the game files you’ve downloaded already will remain where they are, you’re only redownloading 8MB which is nothing). So hopefully that might solve the issue.
It’s also worth pointing out that the percentage is based on number of files, not the percentage of the size downloaded. So the file it is downloading at 31% May just be a particularly large file, thus taking longer than normal.
Free camera should work? Holding down the left mouse button should allow you to move the camera without changing the direction your character is running in – as opposed to holding he right mouse button which will cause your character to always face the direction the camera is pointing in when moving.
My own personal experience is that I haven’t been able to turn the free camera OFF which there is an option to do and it can be done in the windows version of the game (I hate the free camera)
You’re operating under the assumption that the White Mantle basically only breed with themsevles, whereas it’s far more likely that the Mantle are consistently pulling in new people (e.g. all those bandits they deal with), which would mean there should be an even mix of darker and lighter skin tones.
But if you actually play through GW1 and pay attention to the dialogue, missions, and quests then you get the full story… The timeline on the wiki was never meant to be a complete timeline of everything that happens, it only shows major events.
I do however think that it would be a really good idea/would be cool if Anet did some kind of animated series. But I agree with Konig, if they were to do so it would need to be new stories.
You could always try forcing those processes to quit until only one is left running and seeing if it crashes the game?
I’m really not sure this topic is appropriate and you might just find it violates the forum code of conduct…
Open up System Preferences (the application) then go to the Security and Privacy panel. Under the “General” tab is a bit that says “Allow apps downloaded from:”, if that is set to Mac App Store change it to Mac App Store and identified developers – if it is set to that already you can try changing it to “Anywhere” – that should allow GW2 to be installed.
You might need to click the lock in the bottom left corner of system preferences in order to change these settings (you’ll need a developer account/password I think)
You can lower the number of players and the quality they are rendered at in the graphics settings – the options are near the bottom.
What are those values for and why from 300-275? Does that not compromise the graphics a little? Also as Macs are inherently more effective than PCs when with similar specs we really shouldn’t need to do this, if anything it should be the PC users who need to sacrifice graphics for performance, oh well….
That’s not really true, PCs are too varied for that statement to carry any weight. OpenGL and DirectX are just different. And we are running a directX a game through OpenGL, so yeah, it’s not surprising.
what are SMC and VRAM reset? In deleting these things are we going to lose anything in-game? I mean..aren’t they there for some reason?
Your account files are stored on the games servers, nothing to do with your account is stored on your computer (same as any other online game) so you won’t lose anything.
Google SMC reset and VRAM/PRAM reset – the top result should be the instructions form apple on how to do them. They’re completely harmless resets that are often used to solve small problems relating to performance on apple computers.
I think the problem with the paywall for missed episodes is that one episode isn’t enough to make a player feel like they want to buy it, and if they’ve missed the first episode then there’s nothing to get them hooked because playing whatever later episodes they have access to makes very little sense and they have no connection to the storyline whatsoever.
I think realistically the first episode should be free for everybody, they’d be more likely to get new players to pay for the others (though I still think it’s ridiculous, story paywall fragmentation works great for mobile games but I don’t think it should be used in MMOs)
Yeah, they’re kind of fixed the issue.
I’m a student and I don’t have a lot of time to play right now so I haven’t even touched the most recent living story release, but I logged in ONCE to unlock it. I don’t see what your issue is? If they were still using the Season 1 system then sure, but as long as you log in once during the duration of a story arc you unlock it permanently and can complete it whenever you like.
@Aaron, to a lot of people they are fat and ugly and yeah their speech is ridiculously irritating. I don’t know if it’s just because I’m not American, but hearing al lot of the lesser races sound so distinctly human/American is grating – they just look like they shouldn’t sound ‘human’ and I’m not really sure I can explain/quantify it better than that :S (specifically the Quaggan and Grawl). Their voice is not creature like, they just sound like people trying and failing to put on a funny voice, it kind of speaks to the unfortunately lighthearted tone of GW2. Skritt on the other hand are just remarkable adorable and we should eradicate the Quaggan and genetically engineer aquatic Skritt to take their place.
It won’t work if you alias it to the windows file. Your windows partition is NFTS and the OSX partition is HFS+, they can read each other but thy can’t write onto each other.
Speaking of partitions, anyone know a safe way to shrink the windows partition? The disk utility doesn’t let me, I don’t really play SWTOR anymore so definitely should reclaim
some space.
This would be your best bet I think:
http://guides.macrumors.com/Extend/Resize_Boot_Camp_Partition
Take a look there and figure out which one is going to be the best for you. Just make sure you do a time machine backup first I would hate for you to lose any of your files!
Im sorry, when the suggestion toll was up i never really saw anything being taken, first things first when the community thinks there a stupid idea everyone dislikes,it wont come out. Going back the mounts lots of people said its not the best idea. So if someone posted that everyone will say, No which means it wont come out. and i also said they would have to draw or give a sketch of how it looks like not just saying oh mounts because we need them, if the person cant really draw and show a example of what they want it wont get posted and wont be considerd
The forums represent a very vocal MINORITY of the player base. Allowing them to make decisions that have an impact on everyone isn’t really a good idea. There are a lot more people demanding new professions and mounts etc. The issue isn’t always whether or not these things are a good idea, but more of how much of a priority these things are.
For example – a lot of people would vote for a new race or profession. It would be cool, there’s no denying that. But at this point in the game it doesn’t make sense and there are far more things that should be worked on before hand. Players don’t always see that, it’s up to Arenanet to figure out what things are priorities, what is possible with their engine, with their staff, with their budget, etc. So sorry, but your suggestion just doesn’t make sense. There’s a reason Arenanet are the developers.
Yeah the search function has always been broken. It used to sort of almost work, but now it does absolutely nothing.
Adding on to what Nageth said – that’s not necessarily the install location on Windows – but you should be able to figure out where the game installs pretty easily since you have some control over it, mine for instance is in the user folder. alternatively a search should show you where the GW2.dat is.
Just a heads up when it comes to copying the file between operating systems. Boot into OSX and from there you should be able to navigate the Windows partition in finder and copy the file across.
Lacey is it at all possible to get the QA or test players to have at least one person attempt to run the game on an OSX machine. It does seem kind of ridiculous that there is no testing going on before patches are released. OSX users may not be many but we are still sizeable and the issues that people are constantly experiencing are not negligible.
Here in New Zealand you guys would actually be liable to provide everyone with a full refund regardless of how long ago they purchased the game because the product you are offering is not fit for the purpose for which it was sold (as required in our Fair Trading Act). I think that is a pretty good indication that the way things are going in regards to the OSX client is really unacceptable.
You are Arenanet staff, I think to say that it can’t be tested because the staff process for testing and getting updates out doesn’t allow for it is really poor. Why not talk to those responsible and get this resolved?
I lay absolutely no blame on you, I understand that you are very new to the OSX forums and you’re doing this on the side of your actual job/responsibilities for which you are paid – but the way OSX users have been treated for coming on two years is really pathetic. These are all people who have paid for the game and many of whom who have invested a great deal through the gem store. You (arenanet) have a responsibility to offer them the same experience that you offer every single other player, and yet you have consistently failed to do so.
On top of that the actual tech support offered over the past year and a bit has bordered on non-existent for large chunks of time. I’ve been playing the game since the beta weekend (using a Wine pot) and switched over to the OSX beta as soon as it was released. Feel free to check for yourself but I’ve been a constant poster in these OSX forums across release and I’ve watched as occasionally a member of staff has showed up to offer support. I’ve also steadily watched active users abandon the forums and the game because dealing with all of the issues from the user end becomes too impossible.
I understand that once people have paid for the game and you have their money there is little incentive from a management perspective to keep them happy, but this really isn’t acceptable.
(To those with 2011 MBP’s, can I just recommend being careful – there is a manufacturing defect with our MBP’s that means you’re incredibly likely to have a GPU/Logic Board failure at some point :/ )
Lemme guess, Apple gives no kittens and has no intentions of replacing them or compensating us?
Yeah basically :S There is a petition and a FB group which have both had a lot of activity and last month there was a lot of media coverage about the issue on Apple tech blog sites. So hopefully there might be a recall/replacement program. But so far no word from apple. Despite the fact that almost everyone who has actually paid to get the issue fixed says that the issue comes back within weeks which means there isn’t actually a fix (we’re talking system crashes and major major screen glitches/tearing). We have two of the 2011 MBP’s in my house, one of them is now dead because of this and there was no way we were paying for a repair that probably wouldn’t last so we ended up replacing it with a new MBP – which is a huge expense – and the other is the one I use to play GW2 and I’m just sincerely hoping it doesn’t die until there is some kind of replacement program in place. Fingers crossed…
(To those with 2011 MBP’s, can I just recommend being careful – there is a manufacturing defect with our MBP’s that means you’re incredibly likely to have a GPU/Logic Board failure at some point :/ )
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen people complain about autologin not working in the windows tech support forum as well. So hopefully that’s one issue that will be fixed soon at least…
It is quite ridiculous. The new player experience was never something that ANYONE took issue with. If it was they would have learnt back in headstart and beta when people were submitting suggestions. The game made sense, the functions were relatively intuitive. It definitely should NEVER have been dumbed down to this level.
They KNOW that localising the game for Chinese users would require different things to what Western players like and are used it. It doesn’t make sense to retroactively do all of this to the NA/EU version of the game. It wasn’t broke, now it is.

Ananda, they have a much, much bigger problem than the Mac beta. Their Windows client isn’t working either! It seems like no one can run the game at the moment — with the possible exception of people who never tried to use the Trading Post.
lolwut. The Windows version of the game and trading post are working just fine. There might be some people who were having problems, but I can confirm that it was working a-ok for me and most other windows users. OSX version is a different story >.> I don’t understand how they managed to not test it at all. Ridiculous.
What GO in the finder menu?
At the very top of your screen is the menu bar, on the right it has the time and date, on the left it has application specific options. When you are in the Finder program one of the options in the menu bar up the top is “Go”, clicking that and holding down options will make “Library” show up in the drop down. For some people that is the easiest way to access the user library (which is where the GW2 files are – not in the system or general library) since the folder is hidden by default.

Try deleting the GW2 application support folder. It’s not going to fix the in game issues, but it might allow the client to start up without the error message. Hopefully… :S
