Australian Dedicated Servers

It’s probably your ISP limiting certain kinds of traffic.
I live in New Zealand, have regular ADSL internet which is not incredibly fast, but never do I experience issues with connectivity speed… My ping to the Austin, TX, servers may not be amazing, but it is more than half of what yours is – which is to be expected given the distance.

For pratical purposes an Australian server/Oceanic server makes no sense whatsoever. It wouldn’t work with WvW matchups. There aren’t enough Oceanic players to merit enough servers for WvW to work. The only solution would be to place the Oceanic server against US servers – which leads to problems of gaming times since the Oceanic players would do well during their daytime, while during the US daytime they would do much much much better.

Yes Australia might have 9 million gamers, but a teeny teeny teeny tiny fraction of those are playing GW2. I don’t think GW2 even has anywhere near 9 million players, so the portion of those who are Australian is negligible.

When will GW2 for Mac be out of beta?

The difference is that the OSX version runs poorly and isn’t native to the OS that it runs on.

At this point I would hazard a guess that if they ever take it out of Beta, they will just remove the beta tag without making any actual or needed changes to the client.

That’s interesting. Changing the MTD3D value used to work back closer to the original release of the OSX beta, but in more recent times when I had tried it there was no change whatsoever. It’s also worth pointing out that there are two config files, one in Application Support, and one within the package contents of the actual GW2 app.

I would have to disagree just on the basis that other than Scarlet we aren’t presented with a single other Sylvari from our Pale Tree who doesn’t fall into the category of either believing in the tablet (Dreamers and Soundless), or believing in Nightmare.

It’s quite possible to be a pirate and still follow the tenets of the tablet.

Actually the land masses we have seen of Tyria are not the whole world, not even close. We have no idea how big it is, there is a texture map that shows what we can see of Tyria to be a teeny tiny fragment, but the Dev’s have stated that it is just a texture and can’t be taken as official. So unless the dev’s specifically stated that the scale was altered then you can’t state that. What I would point out is that we are able to run full speed everywhere, in real life a person couldn’t maintain that speed for very long, so the seemingly small distances in game would actually seem realistically long if you were to walk them.

The Sylvari are immune to dragon corruption – so you don’t be seeing them as minions. IF they were to be minions, the corruption would have to be completely different to present dragon corruption – which can be both mind (Jormag) and body (all the others). So I don’t see how it would work.

Well, enemies can’t fall of edges for practical purposes.
There are plenty of creatures that should not be able to swim and don’t have swimming animations – if you knocked them off a ledge into water it could be problematic. It’s already problematic that some enemies can be pushed along shore into the water and then you get to watch their broken animations.

Secondly if the cliff was smaller, how does the enemy have the appropriate pathing to get it back to it’s normal place? A lot of games simply let enemies run up cliffs in an attempt to solve this problem and it is super immersion breaking, Then what happens if you knock an enemy off a Jumping Puzzle, there’s no possible way for it to make its way back up, so should it just stand in one place until hopefully someone comes along and kills it, meanwhile the game can’t respawn a new enemy in it’s place.

The soundless aren’t avoiding emotion, they don’t like the tumult of constantly being connected to the Dream and to the other Sylvari through it – they just want to experience their own emotions for themselves.

Obviously the pirates aren’t NC, it wouldn’t make sense if they were given how the NC react to and treat others. I would say that yes they are just regular Dreamers. But I would point out that ‘Dream’ Sylvari aren’t necessarily the good guys. Our character and a lot of the ‘Dream’ Sylvari at the Grove are indeed “good”, but there are plenty of Sylvari you encounter throughout the world who live in a more morally gray state and are still dreamers – Canach is a great example, he’s not Nightmare Court, but his actions are kind of iffy. He was trying to do good, but that doesn’t mean he managed it. Sylvari are just as prone to regular old corruption as any of the other races (which I mean in the sense of doing things for money, pleasure, friendship etc.) so it’s quite feasible for the pirates to still be Dreamers and commit pretty nasty acts.

To be frank, anything that sounds like a conspiracy theory makes for a bad plot.

You know the Forgotten are good guys right? So that wouldn’t be the worst thing ever (though I totally understand the point you are making and am just being silly)

There are a few settings in OSX that might prevent you from installing the game.
By default Mavericks and Mountain Lion tick a setting which stops you from installing apps that aren’t from the Mac App Store.

Open System Preferences. Open the ‘Security and Privacy’ panel. If the settings are locked click the padlock in the bottom left and log in with your user details. Go to the ‘General’ tab and make sure that “Allow Apps downloaded from” is set to ‘Anywhere’.

If you already have the game installed on OSX you can just copy the files across into windows – that way you don’t have to redownload the entire game.

First boot into OSX.
Open your applications folder and right click the guild wars 2 app. Click “Show Package Contents”. Then go Contents>>Resources>>Transgaming>>C_Drive>>GW2>> Then there is a GW2.dat file which is 21GB. Copy the .dat file to your dekstop.

Then boot into windows and open up Windows Explorer. Browse to your OSX Harddrive and I can’t remember the exact file path but it is something like “Users>>Your username>>Desktop” – then just copy the .dat file from there and replace the one on your windows install. Then when you boot it shouldn’t need to download anything.

Follow these instructions VERY CLOSELY:

delete the contents of the gw2 data folder, it’s a pain to get to the right one: this step is a general fix for many tp and graphics issues, even without the previous steps however, it will lose all saved log in/password and in-game settings.
To access this:
1 Click on the “Finder” icon located in your dock or the desktop of your computer to make “Finder” the active program in the finder menu bar.
2 Hold down the “Option” key on your keyboard while clicking “Go” in the finder menu bar. A drop-down will appear.
3 While still holding down the “Option” key, click on “Library” in the “Go” drop-down.
4 Once in the Library folder click on Application Support > Guild Wars 2
5 Move the entire Guild Wars 2 folder to the trash and then empty the trash.
The next time you launch Guild Wars 2 it will recreate the recently deleted folder.

Except that the ability to heal magically should sort of function like modern medicine in that it means Tyrians would be keeping weak people alive (who would not have otherwise survived allowing stronger people to continue breeding more stronger people – natural selection), who would then go on to breed and create more weak people.

Yay for modern medicine/magical healing!

I’m simply noting a difference between "NOBODY knows about abaddon after his defeat " (least till nightfall.) vs “Grenth’s priests and dwayna’s prietss know this fact.”

Sure, common folk might not know it, but priests do. That means (to me) it’s a secret, not common knowledge, but not a hardcore “We wiped all information of this from history.”

Course, the blurb I saw about abaddon’s precursor was also that it seemed like it was very, very ancient. Likely before the margonites were even around. And realm of torment was made AFTER abaddon’s fall.

There is nothing that says it was made AFTER his fall. It was intended as a prison for him, but that doesn’t it was created for that purpose or that it did not exist before that point.

FlamingFoxx.1305

From the earliest commentary by Anet paying for content expansion has been mentioned as a possibility. The company’s success was built on such. The only real differences between what the OP is suggesting and what Anet has mentioned as a possible approach to monetizing the game are breaking the cost of buying an expansion up into smaller chunks and allowing players to buy only those aspects of the expanded content that they desire.

Personally I prefer the approach that Anet has announced, but the possibility of charging for expanded content has been on the table for GW2 all along.

Except that paying for an expansion is a flat fee, whereas what the OP suggests is that the Living Story – which is ongoing – be continually charged for. So in the end it’s entirely possible that to purchase all of the story sections you would up paying WELL over the cost of an expansion. That’s the issue, this is a B2P game, and they’re essentially introducing a P2P freemium model (if they followed what the OP suggests, and to a lesser extend with what Anet has already decided on)

Paying for one expansion is a single flat fee. Paying for continual additions to the game world through the expansion model is not.

Spending an average of $2.50-$5 per month (potentially less because some months will not have episodes) is not functionally different than paying $30-$60 per year for expansions except that the per episode approach allows people to purchase only those parts of the expanded content that appeal to them (thereby saving money) and free permanent content additions are being added for everyone, including those that do not purchase the expanded content.

And yes this is a Buy to Play game…Anet’s second such. Paying for access to expanded content is pretty common, perhaps even the norm, in such games. It certainly was the standard in GW1.

The problem is not requiring payment for the content, but requiring continual payment. The living story releases are supposed to occur every two weeks, the amount of those that total to what you could expect from an expansion could thus completely eclipse the cost of an expansion.

I think most players would rather pay a flat fee for the entire “season” of the living story, than be continually forced to pay 2.50$ every two weeks like the OP suggests. Of course I suspect Arenanet might actually have an option for buying a whole season, but then that doesn’t work very well when most people are all going to have earned different amounts of chapters for free.

There was never ANYTHING like this in GW1. The three campaigns were all a standalone purchase, the expansion was a standalone purchase, and the bonus mission pack was a standalone purchase. The content that was comparable to the living story was free and could be begun at any time regardless of whether or not you were there when it was initially released (war in kryta, hearts in the north, winds of change).

It’s called rubber banding – the communication between the server and your client don’t match up (for whatever reason), and so the client doesn’t really know what it is supposed to be showing you. Then once it makes contact with the server properly you get a fast forward effect as it places everything in its right place.

Jade Sea status: still frozen?

FlamingFoxx.1305

JQ jade must be an awful lot better to justify the effort of going there for it… if the rest of the jade sea was remotely comparable the inflationary effects of having that much of it would be amazing and there’d be little point trading it (except out of Cantha perhaps, but the price would be almost entirely transport costs unless the Empire intentionally restricted quantities). In much the same way water isn’t particularly valuable in the real world.

Except that you have to be able to mine it – that’s why the Quarry exists, obviously it’s not as simple as going out with a pickaxe and hacking away at any random bit of the Jade Sea. Just like anything else it’s a specialised skill, which is what enables them to make money from it. It’s no different to farming, technically anyone can get hold of some land and some cows, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to be able to turn a profit from it.

I don’t imagine the Luxons let just anyone run around on the Jade Sea mining it. Not to mention there were extremely dangerous monsters running all around the place – which is probably one of the major reasons the Quarry functioned well and was able to turn a profit despite the abundance of Jade.

@ Tamias, the Jade Wind Orb contains “jade wind essence”, it doesn’t actually say that it is made out of Jade.

The average player isn’t being steered towards the gem store for gold – if they were Anet would be SUPER RICH.

You’ll mostly likely find that a majority of players don’t even touch the gem store or have spent less than $10USD on it. If you feel the need to buy gold with gems then that is on YOU, not the game. I’m a casual player who doesn’t have a whole lot of time to spend playing since I’m a full time university student (read: most weeks I don’t play at all) but I’ve still managed to always have the gold I need just from playing the game normally. I don’t farm, I hardly ever do dungeons, I don’t do FoTM.

The average player doesn’t need ascended gear or a legendary weapon – they have absolutely no need for super high amounts of gold… The whole game, with the exception of FoTM, was designed around exotic gear – which is very easy to obtain – so you shouldn’t ever NEED to buy gold with gems. If you WANT to, then go ahead. But nobody made you do it.

You underestimate the power of fluff. You totally discount the allure of armor, and weapon skins, when that is all that is mostly all the game has… and then the store puts out a new sexy skin. And players don’t buy gems with Gold.

Just because ALL a player needs is exotics doesn’t mean that the Players are not buying skins at the gem store… or an extra bank slot…or extra bag space.

So no, Just because you haven’t spent any money on the gem store, doesn’t mean you represent the average player. Judging from How many people here also complain about How the game is being monetized…. I think you might be In the Minority. After all… if it were true that " the average player has probably spent 10 USD" then these servers would have been closed ages ago.

See Most people that buy Gold with gems don’t advertise it. They just quietly do it.

Another sign that people feel the need to BUY Gold is all the gold spammers that have surfaced of late. You do Not sell condoms to Eunuchs. You Sell your service where there is a demand. The reason that Anet hates Gold spammers isn’t because " we must protect " the game"" it’s because ..they MUST protect their profit.

The point was that the game doesn’t require players to spend real money buying gems in order to covnert them to gold. If people want to buy skins then that’s cool. It’s their money. But I was responding to someone saying that the “average player” is buying gold using gems. Which is absolutely not true.

KongZhong: Details about GW2 China

Not just me, but the majority of people too. We actually wanted to enjoy GW2, but the designers listened to the minority, and made the game less enjoyable for everyone else. The game went from overflows to merged servers, and your logic is to keep supporting bad decisions by giving them more money! Brilliant.

The majority based on what survey?
Not even the majority of the forums agree with you, and the forums is very far from even close to a majority of the actual player base.

Just because people disagree with you doesn’t make them a minority.

You don’t need a survey. Merging populations with Megaservers is all you need to know that the population dropped off drastically. If it was stable, no mergers would be needed. If it was growing, they would add new servers.

The majority left, because they didn’t like GW2 and how it was being developed over the last year.

MMO developers know how this works – when a game is released you get a large number of players, this number is undoubtedly going to go down over time as the players who hop from game to game to game leave. They know that his happens, most MMO’s out there have server merges after a year or so as the games population settles a bit. The megaserver is not a server merge, it is not an ‘oh no we have no players so lets just have one big server’, it’s a way of ensuring that players are always in populated maps – it has nothing to do with the games overall population which will fluctuate with releases. The megaserver takes away a need to add more servers. If you add more servers you don’t fix the problem of a lot of maps being devoid of players, the playerbase on each server is always going to be spread out – that is what the megaserver seeks to fix.

The “majority left”, what majority? Do you have stats to back this up? No you don’t. Last time I checked the game is still doing well and especially when there is a new release put out there are a lot of players playing. It’s a B2P game, they don’t expect or need players to be playing every week or every month – this is why they’re using the content release model that they use.

Also your claims that Anet have catered to the minority amuse me. Ascended gear most certainly did not cater to the minority, players form GW1 who have been fans of the series for a long time tend to be proponents of horizontal, rather than vertical, progression. The amount of vertical progression that has been put in game most certainly caters to the masses.

It seems to me that the basis of your claims is that the forums represent a majority of players. This is absolutely not true, the forums represent a very small fraction of the games player base – and they are the vocal minority. The majority of players are not complaining on the forums, but are instead playing the game, that’s a simple truth for you right there. The complaints you see on the forum, while frequently valid, are just a vocal minority, you can’t use the forums as an indication of the playerbase and their opinions as a whole.

lordkrall is the biggest fanboy ever. You defend Anet for everything! Come on man, be realistic. Everything they do isn’t perfect. Stop defending them from every criticism. Fanboys make games worse, because then the developers don’t think anything is wrong and they won’t improve the game.

There is a difference between someone who is rational and thinks through things and someone who is a blind fanboy. Lordkrall is extremely rational in his thinking… Just because someone is a fan of the game doesn’t mean their opinion is invalid – that is stupid reasoning because it would basically mean that the only people who should decide what should happen are people who don’t like the game – and everytime something happened to make them happy the game would be bad again because they would be fans…

Here’s an idea – if you are going to criticise the game be CONSTRUCTIVE about it. Constructive criticism involves acknowledging what is done well, and what you think isn’t done well – while acknowledging that it is YOUR opinion – and then proving what you think could be a good solution. Any non-constructive criticism is not worth listening to.

Even if you could get to these portals they wouldn’t take you anywhere. If the zones were already in game we would know and they would have been discovered inside the .dat file. At the moment they are placeholders, you would just walk into it and have nothing happen – except you wouldn’t be able to walk into it because they wouldn’t have put the pathing in place for that.

She didn’t come from a different tree. She came from the Pale tree – the Pale Tree herself confirms this, as does the other Sylvari who knew her in the Grove and the fact that her mender was from our tree and met her when she was ‘born’.

The fact that you are working on July 1st when the update goes live doesn’t affect the fact that the update will be released on July 1st… You are not everyone, not everyone is working, not everyone is in the same time zone.

I live in New Zealand which means for me the update goes live on July 2nd, rather than the 1st, since we are a day ‘ahead’ – does that mean Anet should say July 2nd to appease New Zealands? No, it doesn’t.
