They could make round maps, but they’d basically just be squares with the corners filled in with mountains

Thank you!
If they were to create a shape other than squares it would be artifically induced, which we already do have – the edges of the map that you can walk to are not perfectly straight.

Because if they are on the same release schedule Anet can say “worldwide release” and not be lying. It’s a great marketing strategy, you make all players feel as if they’re being treated equally. Pay attention to Asian MMO’s and the way the western community reacts to getting the updates months later – they’re not happy.

The release is in two days time. It’s on the 20th of May, which is only tomorrow in certain parts of the world (hello fellow southern hemispherean?)

The time of day has nothing to do with your location south or north of the equator but your distance to the international dateline.

Yes but the majority of countries at the start of the date line are in the southern hemisphere. e.g. the whole of the pacific islands, New Zealand, Australia, Japan… if you want to corrct me and say that the ocean in the northern hemisphere is also ahead of the US in time, then feel free to do so – but not many people live out in the middle of the ocean, and if they do they aren’t playing GW2.

They would have to add a TON of code to facilitate those changes then, and code it so that people doing the altered story steps after their race change DIDNT get rewards for doing so (since they got rewards the first time around).

They have more important things to spend their time on and it’s extra code clutter that the game doesn’t need.

If you picked the wrong race/class that’s your own problem. You have plenty of character slots, perhaps you should have played around.

No. The wardrobe system is surface level, it doesn’t alleviate any of the issues with race/class changes.

It isn’t possible and it will never happen. It would render the personal story and character creation personality options completely redundant.

If you want to play a different race/class make a new character.

FlamingFoxx.1305

Pretty sure WoW has vastly bigger numbers of players compared to GW2. GW2 is a pretty good mmo, I enjoy it but it’s far from perfect in a market where many have tried to topple WoW’s domain and have failed.

That’s because WoW has been around for a very long time and when it came out it was something completely new for a lot of people. It held the market for such a long time because there was virtually nothing competing with it that came even close in quality. So of course no other MMO can do quite as well because today’s MMO environment is not the same as it was back in 2004, there is a lot more competition and players are spread out a lot more.

When new zones are added...

FlamingFoxx.1305

It’s not a dated mapping system at all, in fact a large majority of MMO’s use a similar system. FFXIV has instanced zones separated by loading screens, as does Aion, etc.

Persistant worlds are great, but they do require sacrifices in other ways. By having instances Arenanet can focus on making sure that each map is of a high quality. Also it makes absolutely no difference to the game if it’s persistent or instanced. You go through a loading screen occasionally, so what?

When new zones are added...

in Living World

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

How do you propose they enable such a transition then.
The zone portals are necessary, you can’t just have an open field that when players reach a certain point they suddenly go to the loading screen. The game is also designed on the GW1 engine which worked in the same way.

The mountains are necessary to obscure the fact that each zone ONLY contains the models for that zone. If you could see beyond them then you would have to render multiple zones at once, which means people’s computers would have to work a lot harder.

[Suggestion] Collision Turned on

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

Collision/Body Blocing is problematic.
There’s a reason they didn’t include it, when you have classes like Necromancers (who can summon a lot of minions) or gameplay where a LOT of players are in a concentrated area at once it gets super problematic.

In GW1 it was a pretty common tactic for Ritualists to summon spirits in strategic places to completely block people from getting through areas, it wouldn’t be difficult to do that in GW2 with strategically places Engineer Turrets, or a couple of Guardians/Warriors. Forced collision only works in games where the population is highly spread out and there isn’t a lot of open world content.

Testing it in dungeons wouldn’t help – it’s the one area of the game where it WOULD work without a hitch. The second you try and introduce it into the open world or WvW you end up with problems. (PvP has small enough team counts for it to not really make a huge difference).

Having Dwarves doesn’t change how you perceive the story. It’s not going to suddenly make the storyline more ‘adult’….

The records clearly state that even the stone summit underwent the rite…

You’re quoting the wiki, it’s not an official source because most of what is written on their has been written by players. The only exception is when there is a footnote that shows where the information was sourced from. We have quite clearly been told that all of the Deldrimor Dwarves as well as the Stone Summit, who were a subset of the Deldrimor Dwarves, underwent the rite.

It’s not my personal opinion, it is fact – fact that is IN GAME, rather than just on the wiki which anyone can write on.

That’s dead in the water. The M-word has killed that.

The Megaserver still prioritises based on server, and it still applies for WvW. E.g. Sea of Sorrows is home to most Oceanic guilds which therefore has an impact on who you would be playing with in WvW and in PvE if they were doing a Guild Mission etc.

Kurrilino I could say the same thing to you.
The word relic is used to describe something left over from an earlier time, meaning that they were no longer in Cantha at all – hence why we saw no Dwarves there. If they had been underground the Dredge who had recently started burrowing in would have come across them, and the Dredge were ESCAPING the Dwarves after having been enslaved by the Stone Summit during the events of Sorrow’s Embrace.

It is SUGGESTED that there MAY have been Dwarves in Cantha AT ONE TIME. It also says “A mysterious race” and “possibly offshoots of the Deldrimor Dwarves”. That suggests that they may not even be dwarves. The suggestion that they may be offshoots of the Deldrimor Dwarves isn’t conclusive either, if the only Dwarves that Tyrian historians were aware of were Deldrimor, then of course they might hypothesise a connection between the two. That does not mean a connection exists. It is equally possible, following Ree’s comment, that the Dwarves originated in Cantha and migrated to the Shiverpeaks either by boat or by digging.

TO summarise – It is only SUGGESTED that they MIGHT have been in Cantha.

I would also like to point out that the comment you’ve quoted comes from the prehistory part of the wiki. It’s entirely possible that the relics were left over from the previous dragon rise where maybe a group of Dwarves left the others to try and seek refuge in Cantha. It doesn’t even come close to suggesting that those Dwarves would be able to avoid the Rite.

Not to mention, if those Dwarves in Cantha WERE Deldrimor Dwarves as the quote seems to hypothesise, then they would have been subject to the Rite of the Dwarves as well, and would have turned to stone – though the fact that only relics were left suggests they died a long time ago.

……there is so much ignorance in that, it feels like someone is stabbing me in the crotch.

not at all, environmentalism, the cult of the jungle, is one of the worst ideologies ever to threaten civilization. “ignorance” does not mean diverting from your weltanschauung. There was no explanation given for reasons to analyze. But as you are probably indoctrinated by the postmaterialistic mainstream since school, guess it is ok for you to shrug it off like that.

Environmentalism does not threaten civilisation. You must have gone to some bizarre university to come up with that. Also using the German word for ‘World view’ doesn’t make your point more intelligible or credible. Environmentalism is quite simply ideology concerned with protecting the environment. The environment in which we live and rely on for survival and which the flora and fauna around us rely on for survival. It is inherently humanist. Let me guess, you also think that Nuclear power is good and pollution is not a problem.

Because Orr is extremely necessary for the personal story. You can’t change the zone where the entire ending of the story takes place.

Them destroying Lions Arch presents issues for the personal story, but it’s most likely temporary.

You can;t start restoring Orr while people doing the story are running through having NPC’s talk about all the destruction and undead running around.

Also the risen being in the underworld wouldn’t make any sense, it is Grenth’s domain and it’s within the Mists, Zhaitan has no power there.

The majority of publishing is still print based, especially concerning literature that is actually considered good. But no, this is not an ebook, this is Guild Wars and people who are invested in the world and the story are used to and really enjoy the fact that Arenanet’s writers don’t shy away from relationships. Go look at GW1, relationships are mixed in constantly with all the sword swinging. We had a content release that centred on the marriage between Gwen and Logan Thackeray.

It doesn’t “horribly lack” them as an MMO.

In GW1 trading was often used to scam people, the trading post makes player to player trade unnecessary. If someone is offering you something for far cheaper than the TP then they are scamming you, why would they offer it to you for cheap when they could get more on the TP? if you want to swap things with friends you trust you can always use the mail feature.

Dueling is wanted by a small group of people, it is possible in PvP and WvW, we don’t need it in PvE because PvE is meant to be specifically PvE….

A) The rite has undergone by Jalis and his Deldrimor Dwarfs.
The Stone Summit would be the absolutely last guys to help them out.
Especially after the humeans helped the Deldrimors.

B) The rite had to be accepted. It’s not like any Dwarf on any part of the planet in any hidden cave suddenly turned into stone.

c) I always pointed out it should be NPC’s !!!!!!!!!!!!! I never said playable race.

D) Helping the Dwarfs to clean up downstairs and rebuild their Stuff upstairs would be epic and million times better than LS zerker fests.
I understand that the majority of this game are teens and they couldn’t care less about story or lore being happy to push #2 buttons. But it must be allowed for the rest of the GW population to make them self being heard.

The Stone Summit WERE Deldrimor Dwarves. They had recently broken away from the other Dwarves because they disagreed with them, but they were still Deldrimor Dwarves…

Yes the rite had to be accepted, but it wasn’t something they could entirely resist. “Ogden did not initially undergo the Rite, although eventually all dwarves were made to—by force, if necessary.”
“I am the last of the dwarves. Most of my people have gone down into the depths of Tyria to fight the Elder Dragon Primordus. I have remained here to help the Priory.”
That’s pretty conclusive…

They are all part of a collective consciousness now, their only aim is to destroy Primordius. We will obviously encounter them when we go off to fight Primordius, but they cannot turn back from Stone and their minds have basically been destroyed.

The Dwarves don’t need to multiply anymore, their race decided that killing Primordius was more important than them living on as a race. If all the men have turned to stone what use would the women staying fleshy do? There would be no men to continue the race with. Also if women and children HAD stayed fleshy then we would have encountered them. They lived in the Shiverpeaks after all. They couldn’t survive underground for the same reason the Asura had to come to the surface. They could not have migrated north for the same reason the Norn had to migrate South into what used to be Dwarven land. The dwarves are gone. They’re all either dead or turned to stone.

And Ree did mean Tyria as the world. All the Dwarves are stone, it would be bad storytelling for Arenanet to introduce Dwarves that weren’t.

Also given that we are unlikely to go to areas in GW2 that were not explored in GW1 (at least not for a very long time) we are limited to the familiar areas of Tyria, Cantha and Elona – and in travelling these continents the only place we encountered Dwarves was Tyria. The Asura come from underground and don’t appear to have any knowledge of the Dwarves, which rules out Dwarves hiding underground.

There are no dwarves that aren’t stone, get over it.

As the above poster has pointed out. EVERY SINGLE DWARF HAS TURNED TO STONE. Ogden was the last to hold out, but the dwarves HAD to undergo the rite.
They’re now focused solely on destroying Promordius and his minions. Yes it is probably that we will encounter them later on, but they will never be playable and the rite is irreversible.

what about deserters, a group of dwarfs who spit on tradition and left the siverpeak to build their own society.
so with that, not all dwarfs are turned to stone because there could be some who did not undergo the rite.

see, it works in lore, just think of a common situation and adjust it to fit a different world order.
it’s not the best way, not in the slightest, but it is a way that works.

No it doesn’t. They PHYSICALLY could not resist the rite. Every single Dwarf felt compelled to undergo it, even the Stone Summit who were the enemies of the Deldrimor Dwarves in GW1. It was not something they could resist. Ogden held out as long as possible to give information to the players of GW2, but that’s it. They HAD to undergo the rite, it wasn’t something they had a choice about. This is an entire race sacrifcing themselves in order to try and save the world from a threat they had faced before and knew how catastrophic it would be if they didn’t try and do something. If Anet were to go back on that it would be ridiculous and would require a massive retcon.

There’s a reason that people shouldn’t play the stock markets unless they have an extremely good knowledge of how they work, and even then you can’t be 100% certain what is going to happen unless you’re engaging in some kind of illegal activity.

Stocks go up and down, it happens, it doesn’t immediately mean that everyone should be super concerned.

Also NCSoft’s stocks have relatively little to do with the MMO community, Arenanet changing their game to make it more ‘commercial’ isn’t going to make the stocks go up, it’s business, not MMO politics.

It is a game. It is not real life. It takes inspiration from real life, just like all art. If anyone gets upset from tasteful artistic inspiration, they need a reality check, as this does not affect them in any way, shape or form.

Art is being censored.

Now look at which 2 countries are involved. China and Korea.

Do not let dictatorships censor art as well as information.

Be very careful when you’re posting about real world cultures. You’re liable to upset someone. South Korea is not a dictatorship, neither is China. China is run by a communist party, but that’s a different story, socialism has it’s own disadvantages and advantages, same as any other system. Also Korea is a pretty awesome country and as far as I am aware there is no bizarre censorship going on there – North Korea of course is a different story, but they don’t even come into the equation since we don’t have contact with them and nobody releases games there.

Art is often censored, it’s kind of a reality of the world we live in. And just because we view how things should be in a certain way, doesn’t mean that everyone or every country views it the same.

In my head, I envision them slowly letting Cantha bleed into the LS through the Zephyrites and their journeys. If only Elona had a similar way of infiltrating the LS, I could rest easy

The Zephyrites have nothing to do with Cantha…

Actually the fact that they trade with Cantha, have heavily Canthan inspired architecture, and that some of them are of Canthan descent suggests that they do…

They also have links to Glint and the Brotherhood of the Dragon which is all Tyrian in origin so they’re not exclusively Canthan. They may have links to Cantha but suggesting that the arrival of the Zephyrites points to the story moving to Cantha is most likely wrong.

I said they have something to do with Cantha, not that this means the story is going to suddenly shift to Cantha O_o. And yes, they have a lot of ties to Tyria and Elona as well, but their architecture is undeniably Canthan. I see them as a potential means for Anet moving the store to a more Canthan focus years down the line when they’re ready for that.

Guys, we’ve seen some of the blog-posts from the LS1 writers and these were quite good; people just complained that those weren’t released ingame instead – not on it’s quality.

What I’m trying to say: the problem wasn’t the quality of writing but the way it was integrated into the game. It seems that they had to cut almost everything with depth because there was simply no time to include it because it takes obviously a lot of time to create new events which make use of those story-bits.

Physical stories and game stories are two very different things. Think of it sort of like the difference between a novel and a movie. Someone might be great at writing novels, but that is not going to translate automatically into being good at writing movies. Screenplays require a completely different set of skills from a writer, the pacing is different and the way everything interacts is different.

The stories that were posted to the blogs were decent (though I don’t think they were as well written as the pre-launch stories), but that writing skill set doesn’t necessarily translate well into the story that the players get to play through – which is the most important thing.

Definitely was hoping to eventually see Cantha in GW2, and frankly, I don’t see why anyone at a corporate level would be against more opportunities to squeeze longevity (and potentially money) out of players.

As has been already pointed out numerous times there were concerns raised about the cultural representations of Cantha and how they corresponded to real world cultures. You have to keep in mind that the company that own Arenanet and publishes GW2 is an Asian company.

I guess, but surely they can find a way to do it right, instead of throwing it out altogether (if that is indeed what has happened). Lots of players really want to see some Cantha action, and GW2 has certainly had no quams about representing almost every other ethnic group in some way or another. Dredge, Hylek, Grawl, the list goes on and on.

Granted, I have no idea how they would work the other 4 races into a continent that has been almost exclusively inhabited by humans for centuries, but it’s not like they’ve never shoveled up a heap of B.S. to explain something before.

Absolutely there is some way of getting Cantha into GW2 and when Anet feels that it’s fine for us to go there I am certain we will and it will be great
