It’s called making a new character.
Sorry, I don’t mean to be rude, but this idea literally sounds like it replicates making a new character – just without making a new character. So you may as well make a new character and use your level 80 for WvW and PvP etc.

Living World vs Lore

FlamingFoxx.1305

Personally I chalk that up to idiocy.
That is quite literally the writers not knowing how to deal with the fact that Tyria has a couple fewer days than Earth and deciding to change it because they either didn’t want to do the maths or just didn’t understand how astronomy worked.

(Also it isn’t a massive change, it’s not as though it alters how we understand Tyria and I think we can safely ignore it for the sake of the betterment of the lore. I’m not willing to concede that somehow an Asura is just infinitely more intelligent than every single previous Tyrian astronomer.)

I don’t understand why they didn’t just come up with something about how the dragons awakening shifted Tyria’s orbit slightly and because it was further away from the star they gained an extra couple of days. Infinitely more believable/less offensive to the lore community.

Yes, even if you have selected stats and used it – it can still be upgraded.

The only time you can’t upgrade it is if you’ve transmuted it with another skin.

All the versions of the skin will be changed to account-bound when you upgrade them (until you equip them again), except for the Ascended version which will remain soulbound when upgraded.

What exactly is the difference I am meant to be noticing between the calendars?

The GW2 wiki page for the Mouvelian calendar is almost identical to the GW1 page – and we use the Mouvelian calendar because this is Tyria, not Cantha or Elona.

Tyria, Cantha or Elona?

in Lore

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

I wouldn’t really say the heroes of Elona managed to kill a god – because they were the heroes of Tyria as a world… I killed Abaddon and my character was Canthan – so yeah. Also that was the effort of a small number of individuals, rather than of a nation. Therefore doesn’t really count.

I’m not really sure how Palawa’s power works, but if he is able to generate new soldiers from any corpse then I’d be inclined to say he has access to the most power.

Cantha being called the land of the dragon doesn’t give them any advantage whatsoever… As far as we can factually state we don’t know if Cantha has anything to do with Elder Dragons – and it probably does not given humans weren’t around during the last rise. Cantha is filled with lesser dragons, e.g. Saltspray dragons.

Two things, the Aetherblade JP in Gendarren fields is still there and manned, but the airship has left. (floating crates remain that were on it’s deck)

However, I randomly got teleported from that ‘control room’ area to Bad omen beach, where I noticed there IS an airship parked over the water. Unmarked, so it must be Pact or Lionguard.

The Airship is back in the JP. One of the recent patch updates talked about putting a missing airship back in Gendarren – I assume that was it.

It probably got accidentally removed when they put the new airship in.

If Zhaitan had specifically wanted LA then he would have gone after it. As it stands there were never any major Risen attacks on LA (I’m ignoring Sea of Sorrows).
Had Zhaitan been aware of whatever if under Lions Arch he could have flown over and dealt with it – we wouldn’t have been able to defeat him.

Though better I would not say this problem is fixed. Running around with the zerg now in LA I am still getting max around 20fps at medium/low settings whereas before this whole ordeal I could get a solid 30-40 at max. I appreciate the improvement but I’d also like to think there is still an effort to at least get us back to where we were before. On another note (and maybe this requires a new topic) My game seems to be crashing about every other run into LA after this latest patch. Normally I’d just restart and not worry to much about it. But seeing as how this now leads to continuously be kicked to empty cross server overflows it really is quite aggravating. Has anyone else been experiencing this issue?

Keep in mind that using your FPS in LA at the moment is NOT a good indicator. The flame effects cause serious performance decreases, not to mention there are rather a lot of people in very concentrated areas for this event.

Tempered Spinal Blades cost...

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

As Morgash points out the price is due to the way we get cloth materials.
Yes the TP prices fluctuate – but they do so based on how easy an item is to obtain. Cloth will always be this difficult to obtain and thus it is always going to be more expensive to craft it as a tailor.

Saying ‘craft it with a leatherworker’ is a dreadful argument – not everyone has a leatherworker. Getting to 500 as a tailor has been hard enough, I’ve put a lot of effort into it. I don’t have a 500 leatherworker and it would cost me an awful lot to get my leatherworker up that high. – Whereas someone whose character wears medium armour and is a leatherworker is at a very huge advantage.

It isn’t a matter of this being optional content – but a matter of it not being equally optional for everyone. A casual player who has worked hard to get their tailor to 500 does not have the cash to burn on this, it suddenly becomes a non-option – which is a problem when the game is meant to cater equally to both hardcore and casual players.

The Aetherblades stole the airships from the pact. How they managed that I don’t have a clue.

Also the Aetherblades are 50% pirates 50% Inquest. The Inquest are known for their pushes in technology (often through the theft of someone elses) – so it isn’t surprising that they have such advanced technology.

The Watchknight technology doesn’t help with an airship at all – two completely different things, you can’t just add them together.

I imagine that the pact couldn’t act because if they did so it would be seen as undermining the authority of the Captains Council of Lions Arch – who are apparently all imbeciles and didn’t believe us when we told them they were going to be attacked. Oh well.

You seems to be under the impression that
1: They will be unobtainable after two weeks.
and
2: That you won’t be able to craft them after the event is over.

Doing a run per day in LA Under Attack will get you more than enough of the potential limited material (blade shard) to build and upgrade several of those things.

That isn’t the issue. Blade Shards are easy to come across.

The problem is that the Light Armour ascended crafting material – Bolts of Damask – is insanely unbalanced in comparison to the Medium and Heavy ascended crafting material. That puts a significant time, money and resource gate for anyone who is a light armour wearer and wants to craft the ascended version of the backpiece.

Southsun isn’t really possible – Karka are an ancient race and yes we can kill them – but they put up a massive fight. Also the zone was intended to be an alternate level 80 zone, so they wouldn’t get rid of it. Looking at the lore – the Consortium have a huge foothold on Southsun, there’s no way a new multi-racial city would work there.

(CaptainVanguard, Tengu are THE most likely candidate for the next playable race. Arenanet worked on them before GW2’s release and originally intended for them to be playable. They use the Charr model so it wouldn’t be overly difficult to map existing armours onto them and they have a city zone already set up. The lore of the Largos doesn’t really set them up to be playable, they work alone and they seem to use Abaddon’s motto.)

Maclaine is doing an amazing job though, the more recent additions to the soundtrack have a lot more personality to them – I love Soules work for GW1, but his stuff gets really repetitive. The new additions have a lot more personality to them.

Hmm, I’ve seen this before, but that does beg the question: Do you think the player character should be central to the story?
We are used to playing as the protagonist because of single-player games. There are, of course, problems with taking the same approach in a multi-player game. No solution will be perfect, and will have opponents no matter how well executed it is.

How far can the game account for our voice? Especially considering the fact that there are thousands, if not millions of voices like that, all saying conflicting things.

I agree on your thoughts about gamers and reading. This isn’t a problem exclusive to GW2. In fact, the entire game industry has been reducing the amount of text in games for decades now. As a writer, it’s sad to see it progress in this direction.
On the other hand, decisions are made by companies. Companies care about the money a decision makes or loses. Hence, they will be more likely to cater to the majority.

As a writer though, I do think many people underestimate the power of a good story. I think games, as a medium, are missing out on a lot by not pursuing this path.

I definitely agree. English/Writing Studies major here and it’s depressing watching story take more of a back seat in games.

I do think that it’s possible for the player character to be more central to the storyline in an MMO – we saw it happen in Guild Wars 1 (obviously slightly different to an MMO but it still worked) and we see it happen in the initial Personal Story missions.

The initial personal story missions are actually a really good example of Arenanet doing story right – it seems like a lot more effort went into the initial story experience of GW2. The player is actively involved in a lot of the decision making processes and we form direct relationships with the characters we meet. Things just went downhill when you hit the Order storylines, then got worse with Orr where NPC’s are your friends one moment and are being introduced to you as if you didn’t know them the next. I think one of the issues that Arenanet faced was how to cope with the scope and expectations of the storyline they had set up. If they had simplified a little more things would have gone better and there wouldn’t have been as much disappointment surrounding the personal story. I think that disappointment has partially fueled their work on the living story and resulted in them trying to do something very different. I commend them for trying, but it unfortunately hasn’t worked entirely.

The only human who has become a God is Kormir – and she isn’t leading humanity. The rest of the Gods are NOT humans, they come from somewhere else in the mists.

That’s debatable.

The case might be made that Grenth was a half-god, the illegitimate son of Dwayna and Malchor, who cemented his position as a full fledged god of death by overthrowing the former death god Dhuum.

The fact that they could have reproduced may prove the human gods have a mortal origin…. save for Melandru, who seems to be a more ancient and native Tyrian god… though she also has a human likeness.

But he was a half god… Not a human. Also he is not the illegitimate son of Dwayna and Malchor, he’s just their son.

The fact that they can reproduce says absolutely NOTHING about them having a mortal origin. Gods throughout real world myths and legends have been able to reproduce with themselves and with humanity – they’re gods after all so they could probably reproduce with anything.

It’s pretty popular theory that the gods, whilst gods to humanity, are really just powerful beings. We know that they came from somewhere in the Mists and we know that they didn’t create Tyria – so they’re gods in the sense of being extremely powerful – but no in the sense of creating the world.

Living World vs Lore

FlamingFoxx.1305

Would you say that Guild Wars usually employs a traditional narrative then? Or has it been on the literature side of the spectrum more often?

I would say that they’ve failed in a literary sense. They avoid putting a lot of the lore in text form and they’re limited by how much they can have said out loud by characters – which means that the lore that is delivered tends to be highly watered down and over-simplified. The lore isn’t really compelling to read mostly because there isn’t a lot to read.

When you’re subjected to two characters going “She’s going to attack Lions Arch” when players have been saying this for weeks in advance it’s a bit sad. They’ve failed to make the story about the player character, which would be fine if they were doing a better job of delivering the story through the personal story characters. As it is the characters seem to know very little in comparison to what the players know – which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense since we exist in world and should have been able to say something.

I think in part it’s because there is this idea that gamers don’t like reading walls of text and just skip dialogue and story – so in trying to appease those players a little bit they’ve basically ended up with a weak story. They need to focus on strengthening what players have access to and how players have access to it. People who don’t care about story are not going to care about it full stop, so instead of trying to cater to the hardcore, game-hopping audience they should work on making the story compelling for the many players who do actually care about story.

(GW1 was a good mix of the literary and a traditional narrative, they took a lot more care with the writing – although this tends to be due to the fact that traditional quests do allow you to deliver more story – and the player (as well as the accompanying NPC’s) was an integral part of all of the narrative arcs.)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but there isn’t a Light/Medium/Heavy version of the backpiece right?

Just craft it with a character who is an armorsmith or leatherworker. Problem solved there. You don’t need to do it with a tailor.

What if tailoring is all I got? This event is time limited and it is way too late to start levelling up leatherwork now.

Too late for what??
You can level leatherworking from 0-500 in under 2 hours!!

Sir, will you pay for my gold?

If you don’t have or cannot farm enough gold to level leatherworking, then you have more problems than crafting this back-piece, mate ..

Read properly ‘If you’re not a hardcore farmer, screw you.’

A hundred gold is A LOT to a casual player with a job a family and other responsibilities.

I’m a casual player and I make 100g a week. All you got to do is invest in the right stuff.

Your definition of casual may be different to other peoples.
During a University week I don’t even have the time to run a dungeon. I can spare maybe 1-2 hours in the week TOTAL. as in, maybe 30 minutes on a couple of days. People who have full time jobs can have the same problem.
- yes there are people who are students/employed who do play a lot – but their situation is not universal.

Also not everyone wants or knows how to play the trading post. A casual player cannot feasibly earn 100g a week through playing the game.

I’ve been playing since launch and only just hit 120g… Yes I have been spending as I earn on things for my character, e.g. Celestial armour, but it would take me a LONG time to get back to that amount, and as it stands that isn’t really enough to afford to craft this using Tailoring – it would be enough to craft it with Leatherworking. But I don’t have a leatherworker and the trip up to 500 would strip me of most of my gold just for a profession i don’t have much of a use for.

For a game we are supposed to be able to play our own way and is supposed to be geared towards casual gamers it is failing. They do a lot of things really really well, it’s disappointing to see them overlook something that generates such huge inequalities.

Achievements should be personal – these achievements rely far too much on the zerg having a collective goal – and they don’t.

I’ve tried numerous times in map chat to get people to come do the events instead of just fighting the hordes that are left in their wake, but I just get responses such as ’I’ve already done the achievements why should I care’ or ‘the loot is better if I just farm enemies’.

That being said I’ve almost completed all the achievements anyway – but for players who are going to be trying next week it is going to be even more difficult.

Achievements in games have always been designed around giving the individual a sense of achievement and a goal to complete – even in an MMO the majority of achievements should be based around what the individual can do. e.g. how many citizens you save, how many events you participate in (that’s where some of the achevements are fine e.g. Moa’s). As opposed to ‘complete all the events in a cycle’ – which can be very hard to do when there are two or three events going simultaneously and everyone just stays in one spot to maximise their loot.

FlamingFoxx.1305

It’s a pity, the game being able to support two versions of the same map could be very useful in certain cases.

The weird thing is, I’m pretty sure the game DOES have two versions.
There’s a reason that when you enter the attack on LA map it doesn’t show you the full world map – it’s only partial with a red border, and I think that’s because the old version of LA still exists somewhere.

I think it’s kind of disappointing that that is how they chose to do the personal story steps that take place in LA. It actually screws with the timeline quite a bit and ruins the experience for new players who aren’t really going to understand that the city isn’t meant to look like that while they’re doing the personal story.

The movement of the world was back-tracked on a little, but that’s not retconning since NPC’s can be wrong about things and have been shown to be.

I don’t think the lore is broken – but I do think that a lot of the Scarlet stuff has been very very very poorly written. People don’t like it and it doesn’t always make logical sense given the way narratives usually work – so people look at how badly written it is and how wrong it feels in the context of the GW universe, and for some reason decide that it is therefore breaking everything.
