Elder Dragons

FlamingFoxx.1305

It’s possible that the dragons do not have their own names, but rather that their names were given to them by the races of Tyria and through common usage have become their names. It’s advantageous for their minions and even them to follow along with the names given to them because it easily identifies them. They probably don’t even care xD.

Alternatively the dragons gave themselves their names/their names come from somewhere else, somewhere older. Glint had a name, and had a name when she was corrupted. The dragons are intelligent creatures, so it’s within the realm of possibility that they communicated their names somehow.

Zhu Hanuku is a sea spirit, formerly friendly until the Jade Wind, and is a kraken.

Where’s this tidbit from?

I’m not doubting you (you tend to be well informed), but I just can’t remember that being mentioned. The Convocation seemed to have been a long-running tradition, complete with hunting the Kraken, which seems to suggest he had been antagonistic before.

Considering the reward for the Convocation is the Spear of Archemorus – one of the guys who fought Shiro just before the Jade Wind was unleashed – it’s relatively probable that Konig is right.
The convocation doesn’t seem to have been around before the Jade Wind.

Connecting the dots DO NOT TOUCH towers.

FlamingFoxx.1305

Dont know if anyone suggested or did this already, but some might want to look into it:

Do these thumpers thump at the same time universally maybe? I mean in synch. Smashing the ground at the same time for months now. They are far enough from each other so that one person cannot see it, but maybe they are synchronised.

If so, it could be examined how global their synchronisation is. World wide? Server-wide? Or are they only synced for each map? If they are not synced, do they have some kind of a pattern? Anything that could be decoded somehow, maybe with a metronome?

I have no idea how that would work or what it would reveal if anything, just throwing the idea out there.

Mechanically in game it is extremely unlikely that they would be synchronised. It would take far too much processing power to ensure that they all thumped at the same time across every single map across every single server. It may SOUND like an incredibly tiny thing, but in MMO’s people severely underestimate just how much every tiny little thing takes its toll on the servers. And even IF they for some reason did allocate the server resource to having them in sync, it’s unlikely that they would even display in sync for users because that would require a near perfect connection between server and client.
Obviously for the same reasons as above looking for a pattern in their thumping would also be a fruitless endeavour.

Nope! They’re still reviewed.

We want people to make suggestions in the sub-forums which make sense for their ideas. As example, if you have an idea about sPvP, you can and should post it in the sPvP sub-forum.

I understand the intention, but this is actually potentially problematic.
Take the lore forum for example, most of the people posting in there don’t want to have to deal with peoples suggestions about what should be included in GW2’s story because it actually detracts from meaningful discussions about EXISTING lore.
For every other forum I can see it working ok, but please think of the lore forum

I don’t know if this has been suggested already but – Isn’t the MOST LIKELY use for the Do not touch towers to figure out the shapes and locations of primordius’ underground caverns?

They are sending shockwaves down into the earth at a constant rate and seemingly not causing any damage (unless they’re destroying his caverns, who knows) – so it’s quite possible that the point of this is to measure the bounce back/lack of bounce back in order to determine just how vast his tunnels are and just how deep they go?

(Of course I realise you’re all sooo intent on connecting these with ley lines, but personally I doubt there is a connection. Magic leylines + very physical sonic thingies = nope)

The Insect/Arachnid gods Theory

in Lore

FlamingFoxx.1305

First problem – you’re going off things that were in the GW1.dat and were never actually mentioned in game thus we can’t treat them as canon.

Second problem – Guild Wars 2 is a separate game to Guild Wars 1 and there have been changes made to the lore, or at least ‘revelations’ on how things that were previously thought fact were wrong.

Third problem – You’re dealing with things found inside the Realm of Torment, which is of course separate to Tyria itself. There are most likely tons of things that exist within realms within the mist that will never have any bearing whatsoever on the GW universe or lore. The Realm of Torment was initially Abaddons prison before his influence spread through it – so yeah maybe once there were spider gods that ruled the Realm of Torment – but I’m not really sure what relevance they would hold over GW2?

So your choice is to either change this setting every time you want to play and change it back after, or just stick with one way or the other.

Mac client whats so bad about it?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

The reason the cider port is problematic is because it’s trying to mimic the functions of windows whilst running in OSX – that means that in order to play GW2 your computer is working on three levels – it’s running OSX, it’s having to allocate certain resources in order to allow GW2 to think it’s Windows, and then on top of that it’s having to actually run GW2 which is a very CPU heavy game. So the dips in performance and increase in overall computer heat can be quite noticeable.

On top of this cider has a 32bit limitation – so despite macs being 64bit operating systems the game is forced to run in 32bit mode – this means the computer has to work a little harder to run it, but it also means it doesn’t run as well as it could. 32bit generally has much slower load times and doesn’t quite take advantage of all the computer resources available to it (for example RAM).

I think for most people it’s not so much the issues with the client that are making them unhappy (of course it does contribute) but more the lack of communication from Arenanet. There seem to be small periods of time when the OSX GW2 community catches their attention and then we get about a week or so where they respond to posts and provide support – but outside of that week things tend to go back to normal, which means no responses from devs. A lot of the time it is community members who are discovering temporary fixes for problems with the client – I think even if Anet were to acknowledge these problems it would be better, regardless of whether or not they straight away knew the answers.

For me personally there is nothing I consider game/deal breaking. I seem to be the only fortunate person using the OSX client in that I have never had a single bug and everything has always functioned for me. Even now with the recent gem store and TP issues my game and these two aspects functioned perfectly (I am running ML rather than Mavericks which seems to be why). Of course despite all this I switched to running the game in bootcamp anyway – because for me the boost in performance is worth it. But I still hang around because I’m curious to see if the OSX client gets anywhere.

For the future – no clue.

Humanity already are relevant in Tyria at the moment…

Look at the Queen’s Jubilee update, that existed almost for the sole purpose of showing us that humanity is making positive advancements and it still going at it strong…

Also it’s hardly an act of charity on the part of the other major races, or have you somehow managed to completely miss the numerous humans dotted all over the map who partake in important things…

I’m pretty sure that what you want Nicholas is for humans to be THE most important race, which isn’t going to happen – this is not a game about humans, this is a game about humans, sylvari, charr, norn and asura.

FlamingFoxx.1305

Tyria is not like our modern world where every bit of land is accounted for and divided because nations have a great capacity to maintain a large presence due to modern technology.

It’s more like the ancient times where the borders of a city-state lined unclaimed land simply because the borders were the limit to the land that they could defend.

That’s true of a lot of places, but no so much of human land I think. Of course I don’t imagine there are any humans alive who would have a claim for Orr, so I would think – given all the work the Pact has done – that it would just be a multi-racial city.

In GW2 you’re proposing having one pet occasionally somewhere on the map which only ONE person would be able to get. People would just end up camping or finding ways to make sure their guild members got it.

With rare armours – all of them are easily attainable in game, you can either work towards crafting them or buy them off the TP. What you’re proposing has no guaranteed way for people to get it.

Would You Fight To Reclaim Ascalon?

in Human

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

Obsidian, it was established as fact in GW1 that Ascalon was originally Charr land – Humanity

“Ascalon is a beleaguered human nation in Tyria. Originally belonging to the Charr, Ascalon lies between the large Shiverpeak Mountains to the west and the Blazeridge Mountains to the east. Humans conquered a large portion of the land and established Ascalon in 100 BE and holds King’s Watch, where King Doric was crowned. There has been a constant war with the Charr since that time, which had been in Ascalon’s favor due to the Charr’s disorganization until the Searing. With the Searing, the Charr gained the upper hand and even managed to get multiple warbands through Ascalon to head towards Orr. Since then, the battle with the Charr became a true struggle.”

Consider also that BEFORE Humanity came to Tyria the Charr battled with the Forgotten in the Blazeridge Mountains, SOUTH of Ascalon…
“Long after the Forgotten stopped threatening the Charr, the humans appeared and, with the help of their Gods, pushed the Charr from their southern borders, conquering the land that became known as Ascalon in 100 BE.”

I’m sorry Obsidian, but please stop insisting things that have no basis >.>

D:
You have a really good point. We know the Skritt live underground, so it’s possible there are tunnels under Lions Arch.

But also you have to consider that the NPC’s we see in Lions Arch are only a partial representation – it’s a thriving city and trading port, so there are a lot more people in LA than what we see on screen. So I guess you could easily argue that there are tons of Skritt in LA, just as there are tons of Asura, and Humans, and Sylvari etc. we just see a small visual representation of them.

The guild wars were over, Devona would not have joined Adelberns guild. Also one cannot assume that membership is inheritable.

Also there is nothing to say they went back to Ascalon after Gwen’s marriage, and I feel like given their prominence we would have heard SOMETHING about them if they had returned to Ascalon and subsequently been involved in the move to Ebonhawke or in the foefire.

I still don’t understand how you continue to talk about it as if the writers have performed some kind of disgusting act in having Ascalon be Charr land. The Humans initially drove the Charr OUT of the land – that is the entire reason the Charr fought against humanity and inflicted the Searing upon them – they wanted their land back.

Your logic seems to be that because we are humans everything should be human-centric and humans are the most wonderful race ever – this is not true, and it is certainly not true in Tyria.

Ascalon WAS Charr land, this was an established fact in GW1…

My ranger still rocks, my necro still rocks, and funny enough I didn’t have to reassign their abilities, because their trees didn’t get messed up like ele.

Anyway, giving a weapon swap ability to ele’s would not be OP or out of line with the rest of the game mechanics, especially in the way I described it.

Your suggestion doesn’t fix the balance issues that would arise.
The elementalists skill set was designed with the fact that they couldn’t swap in mind. Each weapon is meant to have access to a certain amount of certain types of skills, the elementalists have one of the more diverse skillsets on each weapon because each element functions differently. Allowing weapon swapping destroys that because suddenly someone dealing high DPS with daggers can switch to staff water, throw down two heals on top of one another, let off two or three combo finishers to get burst healing, throw down some control skills with water 4, swap into earth and put down 2 for knock back, cast 3 for projectile reflection then swap back into dagger and, by this point everything in dagger would be off cool down, get back into their dagger skills…. It would be RIDICULOUSLY overpowered.

But to answer OP – no to weapon switching for Ele’s. We don’t need it, we already have access to FAR more skills at any given time than any other profession. Not to mention we have the ability to consistently put up combo fields and set them off on our own, multiple at a time, concurrently… We’re doing just fine.

Bringing Cantha back?

in Lore

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

I fear the devs want to forget Cantha ever existed. I mean, if they make such a big deal about 5-10 asian styled houses in the corner of a city (canthan district), imagine what they would think about an entire asian themed continent.

It wasn’t the dev’s who made a big deal about it. It is THOUGHT to be someone higher up at NCSoft who kicked up a stink – and it is also thought that it is no longer an issue for one reason or another.

There are definitely a couple of dev’s out there who want to see Cantha make a return, they’ve posted saying as much in the very long Cantha thread in the discussion forum. It’s more a question of when/when they can allocate the resources to it. I definitely don’t think it’s a ‘no’ at this stage.

This kind of goes against that. Compare it to something like legendary weapons or ascended armour – everyone has the ability to get them, it just takes time or gold. What you’re suggesting is too dependant on luck, chance and other variables.

If you want unique/rare pets then play GW1 and unlock the Hall of Monuments. I don’t see that many rangers going around with a Black Moa or Black Widow.

Near the bottom look for the two character settngs, one is character limit and the other is character detail. The detail limit is what is causing everyone to look the same to you, if you increase it from low to medium or high or whatever, more people will appear in their actual armour.

Keep in mind that the more different types of armour the game has to load the more your performance decreases – which is why the setting is there.

  • It’s delusional to want to die for your country? Eat yer heart out Marines.
  • I have no idea what worse things they faced. Oh right…that Searing thing.

For the record, at the time ANet didn’t even have all the information. It was elaborated on later. Also, it was the Prophecies’ authors point of view, not the humans. Other than the Thadeus Lamount bit, is the lore written in 1st-person? Is the gameplay controlled by some human narrator somewhere?

The searing isn’t really as bad as a direct attack by the titans – whose magic was used to cause the searing….

It’s delusional to reject a legitimate offer of help in order to die for your country yes…

Perhaps we should consdier the fact that Adelbern disowned and exiled his own son? That’s hardly rational.

Also you can’t really say that the majority of Ascalonians supported Adelbern because we don’t have the exact numbers either of those who stayed or of those who migrated to Kryta. Then you have to consider things like people being too afraid to travel because of the distance, people being scared to betray their king etc. Just because they stayed doesn’t mean they supported Adelbern or shared his views on Krytans.
