Can somebody please explain to me…

… what does the game need a party “leader” role for at all?

The only implemented functionality seems to be to end instances / kick people (which is clearly not desired). The termination of the instance should take place once the last player, not a specific player, leaves it.

The leader position is a mechanic – cinematics etc, need to know which character to use for conversations. Yes most people skip them, but there are those of us who would rather not have a random placeholder stand in for us during conversations.

What's the point of "instance owner" ?

Honestly I think the mechanic is carried over from personal stories where the instance owner is actually important becuase it is THEIR personal story.
But dungeons definitely needed a different mechanic -_-

Well, the Lionguard went to Caledon to deal with the new TA path. So that’s old news, as it were. It still could segue into a push into the Dominion.

We have no reason to push into the DoW. The Tengu would pretty much hate everyone for that. The only reasons we would be going there is if the Tengu finally decided to join our cause and opened the gates (most likely option since there have been more and more Tengu around e.g. in LA for Wintersday), or they let us in because the Destroyers have started wreaking havoc on their city and they need help.

Caledon is the map with the largest border with the Dominion of Wind’s wall. Could Scarlet be attacking the Tengu next? Tengu 2014? Scarlet as main villain for Tengu personal story? This isn’t the real world.

Also you elect to do all those things, so it’s not stealing. Simply gold sinks.

Just as you elect to do them in game. If you want to use Asura Gates and walk everywhere for free that’s fine. The game allows you to do that. WP’s are a convenience system that most MMO’s don’t have. Just as with the trading post, you absolutely can play without ever touching it.
These things exist in the real world because they tend to make sense, so for the in game economy to function in any workable manner it also needs these sorts of things. Fantasy always has it’s groundings in reality…

Everyone would just end up killing everyone else before anyone got to experience the dungeon – granted I’m not a WvW player so I have no clue how the toxic spore thingies worked out when they were in WvW?

I feel like that particular part of “What Scarlet saw” would have been so much more effective as an in game painterly cinematic. Player’s probably wouldn’t have so much of a problem with her if they had been able to witness her bad-kittenry.

In regards to the alliances continuing to work for her – obviously a lot of that needs explaining – but I get the feeling that it’s quite simply that each of the alliances is more powerful now than they were before. Yes they’ve all failed, but they weren’t exactly winning on their own. So perhaps it’s more that they can recognize how beneficial the alliances have been? With the Molten alliance for example – would you expect either to be willing to dissolve the alliance and lose the new technological advancements that were made as a result? But then of course you did stress their continuance to work for her which can’t really be so easily explained. Unless she has something on all of them. Or is very, very rich. Maybe she’s duplicating money using the Mists and then bringing it into Tyria – why has no one done this?

Also a Dragon wouldn’t “work” with an organisation, it would simply corrupt them. I also somewhat doubt Joko would work with anyone, considering how large his army is likely to be and considering he most likely has total control over Elona at this stage (unless Kralk is pushing into his land).

Not going to happen. There is a reason we have WvW, it is precisely to appease those who like more open PvP.

The simple reasoning for not having open world PvP is that 1, it makes no sense lore-wise to be attacking allies, and 2, most players don’t want to be randomly assaulted while trying to play. Correct me if I’m wrong, but weren’t Ritualists’ magic innately connected to spirits, and not the magic flowing throughout Tyria?

If that’s true, then I can see why Ritualists would have faded out of existence. Because they are limited by the spirits they work with, there is a specific skill ceiling that they will eventually reach. Because magic has become much more rich in the last few hundred years, it’s entirely possible that magic-based classes are simply more powerful in comparison.

“Through their spirits, the Ritualists were able to practice magic, or something close to it. When magic was granted by the gods, many of the original abilities were strengthened and merged into their modern form. Though still relying on the power of the dead, their original skills are no longer a visible part of the profession.” – Of course that is from the wiki and isn’t really sourced. But I can’t be bothered digging right now, I might have more of a look later xD.

Also I get the feeling that in order to be able to have a secondary profession, Ritualsits, like all other professions, had to be in touch with the magic flowing throughout Tyria.

Just a heads up, ArenaNet tech support suggests keeping your mac’s up-to-date with the latest drivers and OS.
“1.) Run software update to ensure all drivers and OS are up to date. (Remember the Mac client requires the latest version of 10.7 or above)”
As quoted from Luis Machado, Tech Support. So Mavericks should never be the issue.
If ANet wants to continue “Officially” supporting OSX, they need to be sure there latest build is compatible with OSXs latest build (crazy, i know!) It’s sort of like if everyone’s client stopped working with Windows 8.1, but worse because we get bottom priority.

Mavericks is not supported. A quote is only relevant as it stood at the time it was said. That advice was given before the release of Mavericks. If you look at the Recommended/Supported Technical Specifications listed for GW2 running on OSX Mavericks is not listed. Mavericks changes the way things work within the operating system and this has been known to cause some issues with the client. Also your example is irrelevant. New Operating Systems have ALWAYS wrought incompatibilities. As new versions of Windows came out DOS was not included and therefore a ton of programs coudln’t be run on the newer systems. When Snow Leopard came out there were a LOT of incompatibilities with programs and it took a while after the OS’s release for developers to bring their programs forward to be able to work with said programs. You need to remember that the GW2 app is using Cider, so Anet has to wait for CIDER to be Mavericks compatible.

When you upgrade to a new Operating System you do so at your own risk. If you couldn’t be bothered to check whether or not the programs YOU want to run are compatible then you are the one at fault. Developers are not obliged to consistently and immediately update their software for you, that is something that takes time and money.

The Ritualist stuff in the interview actually really bothered me. They’ve basically chucked in some lore reasoning to justify their decision not to include it as a profession.

The idea that Ritualist magic simply doesn’t stack up seems kind of absurd considering the techniques were developed before the common usage of what we now consider magic, and then expanded upon when said magic came into usage. Something that already combined multiple forms of magic has already shown that it is capable of being adapted, so the idea that it became redundant or weaker in comparison to, for example necromancy, seems weak.

Then there’s the fact that Ritualist’s abilities were a kind of ancestral magic, which is pretty darn awesome. Guardians and Engineers can go die, I want my Rit back >.>

Yeah I think it’s actually good that they’ve left three of them unnamed – and there is actually a really good reason for doing so.
The firstborn Sylvari are sort of on a bit of a pedestal, all of the known firstborn have pretty important positions. By leaving three unnamed it shows that the firstborn don’t HAVE to be these massively important prominent beings. For all we know the remaining three are just getting along with their lives or off exploring.

That being said I would not be surprised if they were brought up later conveniently having Wyld Hunt’s for whatever storyline we’re going to be sent off on next. (Also would not be surprised if one of the remaining three is Soundless).

That’s true to an extent Aaron, but the English language, and every single other language, has rules that need to be followed in order for meaning to be understood. These rules allow us to look at a text and very quickly state what it is without necessarily needing to read through the whole thing. The formatting of an essay for example, or the style of language used in academic writing, the patterns that indicate something is poetry, the kind of title (often a pun) that indicates something is a news or interest article. My point being that when people read something and can’t adequately distinguish which parts are fact, which are speculation, etc. it becomes problematic.

The fact that the text reads in a certain way impedes understanding which restricts discussion, so whilst there shouldn’t be some formula for posting in the forum, there are ways of writing and separating ideas that can greatly assist in getting a discussion going.

While I do agree that Scarlet’s introduction could’ve been executed much better, it is not too hard for me to see that many of the anti-Scarlet arguments here are mere assumptions driven by blind hate against her. I believe it would be most beneficial for everyone to take a minute and think, and digest everything we’ve learned so far before simply spewing logical fallacies here and there.

I think we also have to accept that there is a lot we just don’t know.
- We presumably lack the facts required to understand everything about her, and just because we lack these facts doesn’t mean that she’s a problematic character.

There’s remarkably little information on the Soundless anyway >.>
Sylvari are my favourites and when I first came across the Soundless I was intrigued and then kind of sad that there wasn’t a lot to find out.

As to your comments regarding the Pale Tree – she was born on the values of the Ventari tablet and loves all her children equally – even the ones who have descended into Nightmare. So I doubt she would have a problem with the Soundless, they’re her children and she loves them, I think she would understand their feelings.

Ventari’s Tablet states:
I. Live life well and fully, and waste nothing.
II. Do not fear difficulty. Hard ground makes strong roots.
III. The only lasting peace is the peace within your own soul.
IV. All things have a right to grow. The blossom is brother to the weed.
V. Never leave a wrong to ripen into evil or sorrow.
VI. Act with wisdom, but act.

I think III and IV are of particular note. The Soundless are looking for a peace within their soul, the point is that the Dream is a little too much for them, so I would say they are embodying that aspect. And of course my favourite, All things have a right to grow – I think she would love them simply because they are her children.

If the act of becoming Soundless were viewed as a direct betrayal of the Tree then the other Sylvari, not just the Nightmare Court, would probably be a lot angrier.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dorcha
- I think this dialogue piece is really good, the Sylvari certainly understand WHY some want to become Soundless, although I think it saddens them in some way. But they definitely don’t hate them for it, it’s sort of like they understand the reasoning behind it but at the same time can’t fathom being like that.

Also in regards to your comment on the NC being hostile towards the Pale Tree – I think technically, like all the other Sylvari, they love the tree. All of their actions are done in the attempt to put the Pale Tree into a state in which she is unaffected by Ventari’s Tablet which they view as a corrupting force on the Dream and on the true nature of the Sylvari. So they disagree with what she stands for, but still love her and want to make her, in their eyes, more pure.

The Revolutionary's Dream

in Lore

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

I think (my) problem with the theory is that it is treating the Dream as some kind of forced experience that is slowly driving the Sylvari crazy. We have to remember that Sylvari do not have the same kind of growth cycle as the other races do – they are not born as babies, they don’t slowly experience the world around them as their brains develop to be ABLE to experience said world – they are born adults. The Dream is what allows them to function in the world from their birth, without the dream they would have to go through some kind of schooling in order to gain the same level of knowledge that they possess from birth.

I think it’s worth pointing out that with Soundless Sylvari they are disconnecting themselves from the Dream but not from the Pale Tree herself – she can still contact them, it’s just not as easy – it’s more that Soundless Sylvari find it difficult to live with (I think this is from an NPC dialogue, though I could not tell you which >.>) the constant presence of the Dream and the way it connects them to the other Sylvari.

I also feel like if the process of becoming Soundless was meant to be this kind of escape from the tyranny of the Dream or the Tree then it would be more obviously presented as such. The Soundless still want to live near other Sylvari and they still remain in close proximity to the Grove, I would think that they still follow Ventari’s teachings as well, they just seek a quieter, more private, life than Dreamers.

As for the possibility of it being Faolin developing the meditation technique – unlikely. The Nightmare Court’s purpose is to revert the tree to it’s natural state and from what we can observe in game they dislike the Soundless and view them as traitors to the Dream. That’s not to say a NC member might not act as a Soundless Sylvari in order to advance their cause, but I certainly don’t think one of them would have created the process in the first place.

Caithe is technically a possibility. I’m not sure we could reasonably argue one way or the other? But I personally feel as though it’s unlikely.

I feel like Dagonet is a possibility – as a Scholar who has studied the Dream of Dreams it would make sense that he might investigate how it could be circumvented in order to better understand what it is and how it works. But otherwise I would consider Riannoc a possibility. We have to actively go in search of what befall him which could possibly suggest that he wasn’t connected to the Dream and thus no other Sylvari knew (but then we don’t know how much enter’s the Dream and how directly knowledge can be gained). (There are three unknown firstborn, Anet will probably just invent one to fill the gap…)

I’m not entirely sure what you mean, but I’m going to guess you either did a bare skim at best (something I would fault you on), or were put of by his rather distinctive style of portrayal (something I would tend to sympathize with).

Thoughts about the packaging, good or ill, aside, the meat is still sound.

It’s the style of the writing. I did read the whole thing, but the way it is written doesn’t clearly present what he is trying to theorise on. It’s more as if he has creatively re-written existing lore and tried to fill in the gaps as fan-fiction (note how none of it is presented as possibility but simply stated). -#2 is the most important thing in regards to this issue.
YES it would be wonderful if there was a native client. But at the end of the day the amount of people who are holding out because of the client not being native would be rather low so the increase in account purchases isn’t likely to cover the cost of completely reconstructing assets to work natively in OpenGL

You just gave me an idea…

Is your idea to purchase hundreds of accounts O_o

Also in response to your ESO comment a few posts up. I don’t see ESO taking a substantial chunk of GW2’s players. It is a very different kind of game, from what I understand in some ways it’s more akin to GW1 than it is to GW2. Even then it’s a sub based game and subscription games are not really thriving at the moment (ignoring WoW because it’s old and has managed to hold onto most of it’s players and can therefore be set to the side). ESO’s launch I imagine won’t be that different to FFXIV’s (although in my opinion FFXIV is by far the superior game) in that a lot of people will try it out for a month or so but only a small fraction will decide to continue paying their subscription. That’s where GW2 really shines because the second those people get bored of their new shiny they will come back to GW2 because they don’t need to pay a sub fee.

Totally untrue look at final fantasy sub based and #1 at mmorpg.com it has a huge following and WoW is still very much going strong with over 8 million subs. GW2 is a great game but you bet your bottom dollar that the lack of mac support will definitely be a downfall if they don’t act fast there are several games coming that will support Mac and will be f2p and or sub either way I will not be one to stick around and continue dumping time and money into a company that just does not appreciate or show support for my efforts and the multitude that feel the same way. Just look at how many people have commented on this let alone looked at this Topic itself. Let alone reddit.

FFXIV has 1.5m purchases – that is the number of box sales, not the number of active subscribers.
GW2 has over 3 million purchases – once again, that is the number of box sales.

Also I never once said FFXIV wasn’t a popular game, it is tremendously popular, especially in comparison to other MMO’s. But you have to remember that almost every other popular MMO that isn’t WoW is free to play.

GW2 is a niche game, obviously not as niche as GW1, but it retains it’s player base because it offers something different from the typical MMO experience and it offers a high level of polish that few other MMO’s achieve. I think you overestimate how many people are going to jump ship to different MMO’s.
Also to say that other MMO’s offering a native mac client is going to instantly make GW2 mac users switch is ridiculous. To say that you have to ignore the time, emotional and monetary investment that players have already put in to GW2.
Once again I want to put emphasis on the fact that with any subscription based game the numbers always start out strong but drop off very quickly. We’ve seen this happen over and over again and it’s why there is such a strong P2P conversion to F2P.
FFXIV will do alright because FF is a well established and well loved franchise and has a massive Japanese playerbase. People are going to start realizing that ESO is not as much of an MMO as they expect…

Ebonhawke: Human Ascalon beyond GW2.

Because Ebonhawke is too small to sustain real independent kingdom (without constant help from Kryta, and why Kryta will give them help for free if they are don’t want to be part of Kryta?), and it’s not like High Legions are gonna give them additional territories just for pretty eyes. Where they are planning to expand, into Crystal Desert?

The High Legions already have given them additional territories, more than enough to see them through for a long time- especially given the inevitable population drain of defending those territories from ogres and branded. They’ve the entire Fields of Ruin to work with now, and south-eastern Blazeridge Steppes. And in any event, it seems to be rare in Tyria for population pressures to reach the point of forcing expansion. Too many ways out there for a person to die.

Out of curiosity, though… what aid do you figure they would need from Kryta? The only thing mentioned in-game is provisions, and that’s a moot point with the asura gate and ranches north of the fortress.

Not to mention the Asura Gate provides access to Lions Arch which is a free port and most likely a much more important source of provisions than Divinity’s Reach is.

Happy Friday the 13th!

Nevermind that there have been(and usually are) multiple Friday the 13th’s each year…

Not going to happen O_o.
I don’t think it’s possible – that was the point of us fighting Abaddon in the final Nightfall mission – to subdue him to the point. He is killed and his energy/power is released, Kormir absorbs it because that is what she was meant to do.
“<player name>: “Kormir?”
Kormir: “No. Yes. Kormir. And much more.”
<player name>: “Abaddon?”
Kormir: “No. His power. His knowledge. But not him. His will is broken. There is a new god of secrets. There is a new day.”"
Kormir is not Abaddon
