When is BETA for Mac client going to end?

IF a native client was released, yes it would possibly allow lower spec’d machines to run the game better. But that is a BIG IF.
The GW2 mac client runs through Cider, so it is actually the Windows client being run inside of a wrapper – it’s emulating windows sort of. So to run the game it needs to allocate memory and processing power to running the wrapper as well as the client inside of it – which is why it takes 4GB.
Keep in mind that a Beta tag indicates very little – they could decide tomorrow to say that they are removing the Beta tag because they are confident with how the client performs, they could also say tomorrow that they aren’t happy with it and are scrapping it altogether. Bottom line – don’t get hung up on the fact that the client is a beta because that is relatively meaningless.
I really don’t get why devs are using Directx, the only OS in the world that runs on it is windows. If they used OpenGL they could use it on ANY OS in the world even on playstation and xbox since those run on OpenGL as well.
you would think they do it because Directx is better but in fact the difference between the two is very minor.
Even if it’s a pain to convert everything I am still putting all my hopes up for a native client until then I am forced out of wvw because I just can’t stay there for 10minutes without crashing.
Except that if they did it in OpenGL it would be a massive pain for having the game on windows which is their primary market, not to mention most graphics cards are designed to be best utilised y directX. There is a reason it is still the most widely used format. Also directX is a Microsoft property I think, so of course if you want to develop a game for Windows then you’re going to be developing on directX
^— Just a side note, if you do want to try it on bootcamp you don’t have to re-download the 18GB, you can grab the GW2.dat file from inside the app and copy it across. So if you find that the performance in OSX isn’t as good as you want it to be then there is always a not too difficult second option.
I wonder if the resolution issues stem from the fact that it is a mac mini and all other macs (except the mini and pro) have built in displays.
What display are you using? An Apple display or a third party one?
What happens if you unplug the monitor and then plug it back in? Can you try using a different monitor?
Also, does the mac mini have an integrated intel graphics card as well as the Nvidia one? If it does then perhaps try starting the game with “Automatic Graphics Switching” turned on, and then try again with it turned off.
Also it might be good if you could change the title of this post, the title is sort of scaremongering when the reality is you’ve unfortunately experienced issues that have caused trouble for you. The keyword there is “you”, for a lot of people the client works just fine and the large majority of people shouldn’t experience any issues which would indicate that the client is in fact not a “total failure”.

Applications cannot change the way the Operating System interprets keys. It is impossible for them to override the native Function key commands, so yes you have to manually switch them off yourself.
I personally don’t experience any map lag or movement lag so I am wondering if it is because you’re playing at max resolution on a retina display? Try lowering the resolution and seeing if the map and movement lag go away.
Wellll, Vael was further north than we are presently able to explore wasn’t he? So perhaps we will just have to wait for the Northern Charr Homelands to be opened back up?
Did not know that, my apologies (I’ve always had macs with Radeon cards).
Most probably a bottleneck. You will experience crashes in high density areas it is an unfortunate side effect of running a 32bit program inside a cider wrapper. The fact that it’s 32bit only limits the amount of resources it can use, and then when you add on the resources it is using up to emulate direct X in the first place it doesn’t cope so well.
Nvidia web drivers?
You can’t use any graphics drivers other than the built in OSX drivers so I’m not really sure what you mean sorry O_o.
Evon could be the personal nemesis? If he is flame legion then considering his standing as perhaps the most reputable merchant in Tyria (or something to that effect) he could have had a hand in getting the flame legion and dredge to work together?
^— They already put the statue back a little while ago before they changed it to the Hologram projector – so I’m guessing they’re just going to continually change it and not bother trying to put any of the rebuilding into the lore like they did with Halloween.
How would it be an underwater fractal O_o
^— If they do transform us into the Gods it is likely to be a cosmetic only change like with the Urban Battlegorund (that’s a Charr one right?) fractal. I can’t even begin to imagine the giant kittenstorm that would erupt if they forced a role and different skills on everyone.
That isn’t it defogged, that is the painterly texture of it that exists on the map regardless of if you have been there or not.
As others have said it is the Hall of Monuments, an area for players of Guild Wars 1 to get items they earned. If you played GW1 and linked the account to GW2 your characters should all have a portal stone. Otherwise you can get the portal stone in Lions Arch and explore the small area – however you can’t access the items without having a linked GW1 account.
^— That almost sounds like they could be working on a native version though, and that the Cider port is just there as a temporary means for mac players to access GW2?
I can’t see there being a logical reason to not have support staff for a beta cider port if the actual release is also a cider port – there would be barely any difference between the two and thus no reason to not have support staff now…
I would imagine that only Legendaries with Legendary stats will be upgraded. Can you see the potential issue of upgrading anything with a Legendary skin if said weapon is being wielded by a level 10 character. Level 10 characters cannot wield a level 80 stat weapon so what would happen? Their Legendary would probably be destroyed or something nasty. If you transmuted it onto lower stats then it’s your own fault >.>
DeShadowWolf – the Thaumanova Reactor fallout is what prompted the Inquest to create the Infinite Coil Reactor (the focus of the Crucible of Eternity dungeon), the primary purpose of which is investigating Dragon corruption – I would say the Thaumanova Reactor Fractal holds the potential to unlock a lot more about the Dragons and presently relevant things than the Abaddon fractal.
It may be fun having a fractal related to the Sinking of Orr. A portion of Arah may be shown how it was in its whole glory before being destructed while we may fight at the side of Lupicus before he became a risen.
We could see a glimpse of an unsunken Orr is we vote for Evon Gnashblade!
Hmm probably not. We see the location Abaddon fell in Nightfall and it is in the southern section of what would have been the Crystal Sea (in GW1 known as the Desolation), so it isn’t actually all that close to Arah.
One of the biggest issues in GW1 was character development/progress. There was none. This is what happens when you add that.
It wasn’t an issue in GW1. The fact that it didn’t exist in GW1 worked extremely well because it diverted the focus to the actual content and the actual story. I’m not saying GW2 shouldn’t have vertical progression though, different game targeted at a different market. I <3 both, but in all seriousness if you insult GW1 I will eat you
They haven’t started making them yet. They have said they will start making whichever one wins after it has won.
They are also going to add the Aetherblade Retreat and Molten Weapons Facility as Fractals within this year.
The gods aren’t dead. They’re just AFK. Don’t go spreading false rumors.
They got turned into Elder Dragons.
Huehuehuehuehue
Please go away, that is the most unfounded pice of speculation that exists within GW2. There are just so many reasons why that is false – including but not limited to the fact that the Elder Dragons and the Gods both existed at the same time with Arah being built on top of Zhaitain.
I sort of agree. I prefer achievements that actually mean something. I’m not opposed to dailies, they should exist, but for a lot of people they aren’t a realistic way of earning achievement points. As it is I’m sitting at 4,600 the predominant amount of which comes from doing actual achievements (e.g. JP’s, Exploration, Killing).
^— Except that they’re trying to get across that the decisions we make impact the game. The in game world therefore needs to feel in some ways real, they have limited resources and time so it wouldn’t make sense to investigate both and they are using it as a way to introduce us to the possibilities that each candidate presents. He isn’t saying bring out your pitchforks if you want us to make both, he’s saying if enough people want the unmade fractal to be made then they might be convinced of its use.
It could also be possible that Primordius’s affinity for Volcanoes means that his champion resides on the Ring of Fire Island Chain.
Also make sure you’re in the correct home instance – as in the one that corresponds to your race (and that you consumed the Gift of Quartz item)
It was never announced that GW2 would be playable on an iPad. Tablets aren’t anywhere near close enough to being able to play fully fledged MMO’s.
What Anet did advertise was a companion application. The idea has since been scrapped though with the release of API’s to the general public – so it is now possible for players to create their own Apps to provide extended functionality outside of the game.
Hrmmmm, except the Temple of the Six Gods was in the Crystal Sea while there is no indication that the bloodstone would have ever been at the temple. Considering the bloodstone was created by the Seer and is known to have been in Arah before being broken into pieces by the Gods and cast into Abaddons mouth (although one would assume it had a different name back then….).
I’m also somewhat doubtful that human soldiers would have been involved. The Gods hardly would have needed assistance to cast Abaddon down and it isn’t necessarily Margonite armies that were involved (also it would be more likely for them to have an Armada than an Amy since they were seafarers), all we know is that they worshipped Abaddon exclusively and desecrated the shrines of the other five Gods.
I feel like it would be more likely for players to experience the mission as the five gods or as Forgotten maybe? I can definitely see how they could include battles with Margonites over the shrines of the Gods though. It will be really interesting to see what it’s like (if we get this one), so I’m excited regardless.
-_- Which is why America is like the only English speaking country that calls Autumn Fall.
They have said tons and tons of times that they are working on it and it will be released before the end of the year so please stop with these threads it is getting ridiculous.
^— Except I think in part of Mai’s dialogue she admits that her goal was to open up a seat on the council and then put herself on the council.
(Avariz, real world notions and personal opinions of what Avatars are in the real world don’t factor into this at all.)
Because in the real world Avatars are used to explore the planet Pandora, which is a horrible 3d planet, as we all know.
But back on topic, it would be very interesting if we got to see Abaddon’s side of the story. Was he really such a bad guy? Or were his intentions good?
I’ve always felt like his intentions weren’t completely bad? He was originally enraged by the other Gods limiting the gift of magic he had given to the races of Tyria. It sort of seems like he believed in absolute knowledge and thought this was something that should be shared with the races – whereas the other Gods were more concerned with the effects of this and how the races would use magic. It also seems like one of the catalytic moments was induced by the Margonites fanatic worship of him, so his actions in attempting to protect them aren’t entirely unjust. “act with magic, act within reason, act without mercy” Sounds pretty logical to me xD. I don’t think it was a case of good vs. evil in the beginning but perhaps more just that his opinions on how the races of Tyria should be treated and the information they should possess differed to the opinions of the other gods which caused a lot of tension between them. In the end though attempting to pretty much turn everything to Nightmare seems pretty bad to me xD.
It isn’t unknown why Shiro did it – He was influenced by a Fortune Teller who turned out to be a demon under the service of Abaddon. Vizu was killed by the Jade Wind blast that Shiro unleashed as he died.
She did not do this single handedly, her actions allowed two prominent Kurzick and Luxon figures to finish off Shiro. Shiro also is by no means the most impotant enemy in a GW1 campaign, IF you really had to pick someone it would be Abaddon…
Any players who paid attention to the story of Factions will absolutely know who she is..

Ahh, the fans, the fans… These past couple of days they’ve pretty much become part of the bg music for me, lol. My MBP managed to run Tera at medium-high on bootcamp with good fps/without the fans blasting off to the orbit like they do with the GW2 mac client so I assume it’ll run at least a little better/quieter on the windows side, hahah.
Tera is optimised far better than GW2 is. The only thing that isn’t so great about Tera are the frequent crashes you get on a 32bit Windows install (and the fact that I don’t really like the game).
Spoiler:
Wasn’t that what the destroyer of life was in GW2 book 2.Basically we missed most of the dragon champions they where taken out by destinies edge.
Don’t forget the Great Destroyer that we killed all the way back in GW1

Excellent, thank you both! I knew the OSX version was just a wine port but I wanted to make sure anyway since I’ve run into some weird hiccups transferring files between the two systems before. I’ll get around to it tomorrow now that I know I don’t have to wait for four hours for it to d/l, curious to know how much better the game will run on windows!
It will depend on your computer obviously, but generally quite a bit. I run it on both OSX and Windows with all settings at Max (except Shadows at High instead if Ultra and Normal sampling) and I get abut 25-35 FPS on OSX and 35-55 FPS on Windows. The biggest difference is that the fans run much quieter xD.
^— Anthony Orden seems to be trying to push people in the direction of the Thaumanova Fractal xD.
(Avariz, real world notions and personal opinions of what Avatars are in the real world don’t factor into this at all. In GW2 we know for a fact that the Avatars are NOT the Gods and are in fact separate entities to them. Anyone who has been in the Underworld and seen the Reapers knows this. They are Servants of Grenth who work on his behalf, not Grenth himself or aspects of Grenth. Lyssa’s Muse is the same – regardless of how you personally felt during that mission – Lyssa’s Muse is not Lyssa. The implication was always there in GW1 that the Gods had already distanced themselves from Tyria quite a bit and the Avatars were our last remaining link to them.)
I searched in the forums writting in the search box: blue orb, krait orb, but nothing.
Thanks
The search function has a really small limit on how far back it will search, you’re better off searching google to find things in the forum xD.

Yes it is possible.
I play using both Bootcamp (most of the time) and the OSX client, so if there has been a large update I just copy the .dat over from whichever.
Both OS’s use the exact same client downloaded from the exact same place and compiled in the exact same manner, so they are of course interchangeable
Obviously the Windows .dat is located wherever you installed GW2 while the OSX .dat (if you didn’t already know?) is accessed by opening Applications>>
Right clicking ‘Guild Wars 2’>>
Clicking ‘Show Package Contents’>>
Contents>>Resources>>Transgaming>>c_drive>>GW2>>GW2.dat
Also you can just copy it direct from one to the other – you don’t need to use an external hard drive or USB or anything.
If you want to copy the OSX .dat to Windows then boot into Windows and navigate to your Macintosh HD (I would suggest copying the .dat to your OSX desktop to make it easier to locate from the Windows side) and then copy it across. Likewise if you want to copy the Windows .dat onto OSX then boot into OSX and navigate to the file in the Windows hard drive and copy it across.
It would be in the crystal desert around the desolation which was a sea before hand. Not in Orr as far as I’m aware.
There’s a lot of Debate about this… yes the Staff of Mists is located there as were several Margonite Shrines. But in the ruins of Orr here we also see Abbadon’s main Shrine, underwater. Yes he was bound under the Desolation if the Vortex is any indicator. But the battles could have ranged from there all the way up to Tarnished Coast for all we know. <— B/c there’s also evidence that Mursaat were eventually involved? Remember… when Abbadon was banished, so too were the Bloodstones (Directly into the Volcano Island). So yeah there’s possibilities here for BIG Cinematics in several locations.
Not entirely correct sorry. We know that Abaddon’s eventual fall at the hands of the Gods cast him into the Crystal Sea and caused it to become a desert, so we know exactly where the fight took place. Abaddons shrine is in Orr because that is where all of the gods lived. The Mursaat aren’t involved until later in the story and we witnessed most of that in GW1 – they sacrificed humans on the bloodstones in order to keep the Door of Komalie shut and prevent the Titans in the Foundry of Failed Creations (within Abaddons Realm of Torment) from coming through. The Mursaat themselves aren’t directly tied to the bloodstones however, the Seers are the ones who created the Bloodstone while the Gods cast it into the Ring of Fire Island Chain subsequently scattering it all over Tyria.
Unless Abaddon goes on into an evil overlord style rant, where he describes his motives in detail and reveals different secrets for each god, we won’t be getting much lore from that fractal either. We will just be able to be able to fight Abaddon, and hopefully he has a body this time.
If it did turn out that Abaddon’s fractal is a big boss fight (both fighting style and possibly lore… maybe), that means that the Reactor fractal with be something along that lines as well, and the chaos rifts will probably be pulling something equally large from the Mists. The only difference is that we know what we are getting from Abaddon’s. We’re getting him.
The Reactor is the mystery box….
I wouldn’t assume it would be a big boss fight – there’s nothing to indicate we would be fighting him, just witnessing his fall. For all we know we could participate in the even as Margonites. I also don’t think the two would be designed in a similar way – they will design in whatever way best communicates the story. They haven’t started working on either of them yet (and wont until a decision has been made), so I don’t think the structure of one would have any impact on the other.
Lore wise we all know what Abbadon looks like from GW 1. He would be like that humanoid giant chained up to the cliff in the cliff face fractual. However instead of a human head he will have a big brain insect head stuck on a humanoid body similar to the Margonites but very much bigger. Game play wise I would take cue from Zhaitan/all other demigods fights, and a lot of people have found these initially very disappointing. Now that Anet have revamp them, I found them to be epic as first promised at the beginning.
Is there anything to suggest that he has always looked that way? I imagine after being struck down by the other Gods and then imprisoned in the Realm of Torment you might look a little worse for wear also xD. (Also the murals depict him in his demonic state so maybe he has always looked like that I don’t know?)
Am I the only one that’s curious of the relationship between the Uncategorized Fractal and the Thaumanova Reactor incident? The wiki says that it (Thamumanova Reactor) was the site of a RUINED Asura City.
Is it possible that the Uncategorized Fractal is the sealed off modern day version… of the city on top of Thaumanova Reactor?
No. We’ve had an official response from a dev that confirms the Uncategorised Fractal, like all of the other Fractals, is a past event, not present or future.
TC players seem pretty nice from what I’ve observed of them in Obsidian Sanctum xD.
Players on SoS are nice as well, I’ve only ever really observed people being friendly in Queensdale.
Actually that is false. Read here on the genesis of magic in the world of Tyria.
Thank you for beating me to posting that xD.
A lot of people think Scarlet may be Livia
She DID get the staff the Vizier used at the end of Eye of the North, so she could still be around. That would be SO great too.
She is most probably still around – she was in the Sea of Sorrows book so she has already lived longer than any human should, but she’s not evil, so pretty sure she isn’t Scarlet.
Watch the latest Developer livestream (it came out today) – they pretty much say they’re working on everything you just said. There is a blog post coming on Thursday (or next week I don’t remember _
) that is intended to be a little more transparent on the game direction etc.
^— That is exactly the point. Pirates. It isn’t meant to be fair, and I think it’s meant to be a little bit more than ridiculous.
I think one of the devs said that there will be NPC’s trying to buy peoples votes O_o, although that could have just been referring to the promises Kiel and Evon are making.
If they are behaving in a reportable manner then report them.
Unfortunately Queensdale has long been the Daily/Monthly zone and there are a lot of players who pretty much live there and do nothing but grind and be kittens :/
I do agree that it’s concerning – Queensdale is going to be the zone that a lot of first time players first experience (since humans seem to be so popular -_-), so it’s not advantageous to the games community for it to be used in that way.
The first, it’s been stated that it centres around Abaddon’s initial fall. Abaddon created the Titans – the Charr worshipped the titans as gods until they realised what they actually were and overthrew the Flame legion. That’s a pretty solid reason to want to investigate it if you ask me.
Also a dev has hinted that he may be doing it for religious reasons, whatever that might imply…
