http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Lore
Is a really great place to start.
Down the bottom of that page is a little table with more lore articles.
The ones that might be of particular interest are the ‘Storylines’ since you didn’t play through GW1 and a lot of the lore was delivered through the GW1 storyline.
Prophecies: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Storyline_of_Prophecies
Factions: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Storyline_of_Factions
Nightfall: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Storyline_of_Nightfall
Eye of the North: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Storyline_of_Eye_of_the_North
Beyond: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Storyline_of_Beyond

If there is anything more specific be sure to ask and someone here will be able to give you information or point you in the right direction.

The Guild Wars 2 wiki also has some helpful stuff as well:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Lore
Once again there is a table down the bottom of the page which has links that may interest you.

The Timeline can be pretty helpful for putting things in perspective:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Timeline
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Timeline

The Movement of the World offers a good overview of how things are at the beginning of GW2:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Movement_of_the_World
While the table at the bottom also has links to lore articles for all of the major races as well as the minor/lesser intelligent races (e.g. Quaggan, Skritt, Krait etc.)
And of course if you’ve played through the GW2 storyline and dungeons then you’ll have a much better knowledge

Kiel vs Evon, which fractal is preferred?

One of the dev’s mysteriously posted ‘I wonder what happens when chaos energy mixes with the mists’ (not a direct quote but thats the gist of it) in response to the thuamanova fractal – which does of course make it sound a lot more interesting.

I want to support Kiel, but the Abaddon fractal is just too tempting to turn down

There was also a comment that hinted that Evon’s wanting to study Abaddon’s fall may be religious.

I’m interested in the Thaumanova Reactor because it can grant lore on the ED.

I’m interested in the Fall of Abaddon because of a fan-fiction I wrote (and am re-writing thanks to GW2 lore) being based around that.

But I’m also interested in what Kiel and Evon would do if they become/don’t become a member of the Captain’s Council.

I may end up not voting at all. So torn.

The way I understand it is that tokens drop as loot all across the world – so you may want to vote (there will probably be achievements for voting), just vote evenly xD?

Definitely agree with you on being interested in what they will do if they don’t win. Kiel seems level headed enough, but Evon doesn’t exactly scream sanity to me _. I suppose with Kiel you could have her story go either way – with either research and exploration into the thaumanova reactor, or further investigations with Majory and Kasmeer?

WP costs are in no way crippling… People need to stop complaining about that. I’m a casual player who doesn’t do dungeon runs often and doesn’t grind or play the TP – I’ve still managed to build up 30ish Gold and WP costs are always paid by the less than 1 gold I have on my person which is sustained by selling junk items…
History lessons are far more important. If you’re that strapped for cash then run everywhere, and remember that Asura gates are free! you can cover very large distances of the map using an Asura gate and it takes 5 minutes at most to go from one end of a map to the other.

Thank you for sharing these concept art pieces. Are these fan made for Cantha in GW2? or is it GW1 Art? I haven’t seen them before!

It’s GW1 concept art. Unfortunately a lot of the GW1 concept art never got displayed very prominently. It exists in the back corners of the internet mostly xD.

The Charr know that Abaddon was behind the events, they have members in the Priory.

The LORE of Guild Wars 2 and Expansions

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

Colin has also said they haven’t decided one way or the other on Expansions.. The whole “No expansions ever” has been widely misquoted and the context forgotten. The dev who said this initially was trying to say that they want to explore the viability of the living story and hope to get it to a point where it can actually replace the function of expansions. By having content released every two weeks they could actually uncover parts of Cantha in a meaningful and realistic way for example. But honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if an expansion is in the works…

Why do we know so little about the world?

in Lore

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

There’s a drastic difference in the Kraken and the DSD. The threat of the Elder Dragons is visible to all Tyrians. Everyone is very aware just how dangerous they are. We haven’t been able to travel the oceans because they were littered with Dead ships from Zhaitans armada for example.

You also have to take into considered the lore examples of expansion. Humans have travelled from Cantha to Elona and eventually to Tyria. In GW1 we saw new areas of Tyria being opened up as we investigated further north. There are lore reasons for the boundaries we experience.

In Prophecies for example, North of Ascalon was Charr land, so of course nobody went there. The Shiverpeaks were dangerous to cross and littered with Stone Stummit dwarves. The Crystal Desert and a lot of Elona is barren and dangerous. The Maguuma is dense and full of carnivorous plants etc. etc. etc.

Now in GW2 we have Jormag to the North preventing travel in the Northern Shiverpeaks. The Flame Legion homelands prevent outwards travel from Ascalon, the Crystal Desert has been closed off because of Kralk and Palawa Joko’s army. Zhaitain blocked the sea routes directly out of Kryta and the DSD roams somewhere off in the ocean.

It’s also important to take into consideration the LENTH of time it takes to traverse places. Yes in game it takes like 3 minutes to go to one end of a zone to the other, but the ‘real life’ distance would most probably be much farther. GW1 did a better job at conveying the passage of time through missions and you sort of get the impression that it took about a year for us to travel all over Tyria during Prophecies, a year during Cantha, a year during Elona. So ignoring the life threatening monsters that border us – travel would be no mean feat.

It’s not really a long shot O_o. re is a prefix, to regain something you have to have had it in the first place – definite fact. If they had meant it to be read that she was freed of corruption and gained free will and identity they would have said “gained” not “regained”.
Also that’s not quite true. The Age of the Gods is not the same as the year they entered Tyria from the Mists – we have no idea how old they truly are. Although Glint is almost certainly older than the Gods arrival on Tyria considering she must have been awake during the last cycle in order to have been corrupted in the first place (just assuming this is not a Nornbear situation considering how own power etc).

Glint's elder dragon

in Lore

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

Do we have any evidence that there ever was a “before” Glint was a champion of Kralkatorrik?

It’s heavily suggested in the wording.
From Arah Forgotten path:
“Warden Illyra: Yes. Yes! Look at these runes. The Forgotten were able to remove Kralkatorrik’s control over Glint.
Warden Illyra: Glint remained in crystalline form, but she regained her free will and identity.”
To regain something you have to have had it in the first place so that would suggest she was corrupted rather than created by Kralk. The fact that she “remained” in crystalline form also suggests that she had a previous form before Kralk corrupted her.
The Zephyrites also refer to Glint as being older than the Gods (although not sure how much I believe them)

+1 I honestly can’t play any other MMO anymore (except GW1 because it’s just special).
I played Tera for a month but I had to stop because it was just so torturous. The combat was insanely repetitive and the MP bar felt like a massively pointless hindrance. Also I can’t stand being rooted in place while casting. To the person who said it makes you be tactical with your skill choices – try playing a Sorcerer, every skill roots you in place including the default attack skill which isn’t quite fast enough for the combat to feel smooth. I don’t want to play a game where I cast then run backwards then cast then run backwards. GW2, run around and cast = yay!

That is the game itself. The achievement is tied to this Living Story arc. So theoretically after this event these NPC’s will go away (or maybe they’ll stay you just wont be able to get the achievement anymore). But you will still be able to play against other players.

Are GW2 Player Skills Boring?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

Skills are too dps-centric, and by that I mean that design is too focused towards numerical values rather than the factors of their execution. It’s thoroughly designed with the mentality of MMO combat. It tries to be actiony by removing self rooting and making it so that new skills don’t phase out old ones, but all it ends up doing is removing the fat that made MMO combat interesting.

Games like Vindictus of DFO do action combat correctly because a skills in those games are balanced through the nuances of their execution- the hitboxes, windups, frames and so forth. Consequently those games tend to have even fewer overall skills, and little to no phasing of older ones.

And yet games like Tera and Vindictus who have ‘true action combat’ feel really really horrible (to me). GW2’s combat is exactly how it needs to be to avoid animation locks, which I love it for. If there is one thing I cant stand as a caster it is being forced to stand still to cast all of my skills, GW2 treats stationary skills properly by using them sparingly.

I think people just need to accept GW2’s combat for what it is. It is intended to please action combat lovers because that isn’t a gameplay style everybody enjoys. It’s quite simply meant to be a step up from traditional MMO combat, which it is. Even then there are a lot of people who complain about having to move while fighting, so you can’t win over everybody.

I agree in some respects. There is a certain element of skill to Belchers Bluff, but there is also a lot of luck. People just want to experience it and get the achievement, for people that really want to play they will play it against their friends and other people, but the NPC’s are there to introduce you to the game and offer the achievement so it shouldn’t be so difficult.

The only tip I can offer – Fight Adnul after all the others and use the Woo achievement on him when he has about 50% health. It prevents him from drinking water and healing. Use Bluff sparingly and drink whenever you have the ability to do so. Watch his moves, if he has been drinking a couple of times use Woo to prevent him from healing and then use Belch on him, either he’ll bluff and you;ll catch him out or he’ll drink and his health will go down.

Admittedly I did this before the patch and used Mango Pie for healing so that did make it a little easier.

I don’t know what the Jumping Puzzle without checkpoints you’re referring to is though? This update didn’t bring in any new Jumping Puzzles.

I get so confused by all the Australians complaining of rubber banding. I live in New Zealand in a rural area and I’m able to consistently place in the top 3 for Sanctum Sprint >.>, I’m not saying the performance is flawless, but as long as you’re aware of where your character should end up and respond to that accordingly rather than just what you see on screen you should be fine.

The thing is though: Most players are really nice and generally if you ask the people you’re playing with if they would mind letting you come first next time so you can get the achievement they will be happy to oblige. I’ve been in multiple groups where we’ve done this for players and just waited at the end and let them be first to cross the line. People play the game for the achievements and once you’ve come first it doesn’t matter what you place for the rest of the 25 races for the achievement, so people dont mind.
