Just to be clear. Is it the game that launches with a black screen? Or the launcher?
If it’s the game, can you try opening up the options (F11 or Fn+F11 depending on your keyboard setup) and seeing if that comes up even though the screen is black? If it does switch into Window mode and see if that fixes it. If it doesn’t let me know. Also, can you hear the character selection screen music playing?

Colour blue and washed out

FlamingFoxx.1305

I need to point out that Guild Wars 2 operates under a different colour profile. The screen will go slightly blue when you open GW2, this is natural and expected and isn’t anything to worry about.
The only time you should take notice of this is if GW2 isn’t running and your colour profile goes blue-tinted when the integrated graphics card switches off, even then restarting will fix the issue.

But yeah. GW2 has a different colour profile. It is meant to be this way, you won’t fix it by changing any settings because it isn’t something to be fixed.

Put Invisible bags at the bottom tabs, crafting at the second to last tab and normal bags at the top, then you don’t have this problem… There’s no reason you would need invisible bags at the top of your inventory, and if you did you can always just minimise the other bags. The game will only put them in specialised bags if you’ve put those bags at the top of your inventory, which is your own problem.

Ideas for new Crafting Professions

FlamingFoxx.1305

Sorry but all of these don’t provide enough depth for crafting professions.
The big issue with the Apothecary is that healing potions won’t ever be in game. I think from memory they had considered them initially but thankfully they ditched them. healing potions ruin games. Combat should be about working with the skills you have and the people around you to make sure you don’t die – not being able to drink healing potions and having hotbars all over the screen.

Cartographer doesn’t offer you enough things to craft. All professions have access to self speed-boosts which makes speed boost items relatively useless – buffs are also something that is covered by the cooking profession.

Farming is something you find in a sandbox game, not a theme park. Also you can’t have a crafting profession that relies on other professions because it becomes problematic. All crafting professions need to create items that directly benefit the player and don’t have functions already found in existing professions.

Why aren't there dense forests in Tyria?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

Very few if any games have dense forest quite simply because it doesn’t make for good gameplay. There are a few areas in game that have trees close together and if you go stand in the middle of the trees you will find it much harder to play. They block your attacks from hitting enemies, they clutter the camera and field of vision and they also take up resources, the more trees that are around you the more your graphics card has to render.

Caledon Forest is actually decently dense, just in a different sense because it’s more jungle-like that forest-like.

I think Ogden asked if it was human built because it was occupied by humans at the time. Also at various points in their history humans have built some pretty huge and impressive structures.

And your character doesn’t need to know much of anything about the Eye to know it wasn’t made by humans. The game always assumes your character followed the storyline of the games (as opposed to the ‘power-level to 10 and go to EOTN route) so by the time they get there they will have seen a lot of the human cultures on Tyria and should have a pretty good idea of what they’re capable of.

So they’d be able to look at the Eye and know it wasn’t made by humans in the same way people in other franchises can see an alien space ship and instantly know it’s alien.

Yeah we all know the Eye isn’t a human structure xD

But I think that’s more just that they’ve finally been given the all clear to work on Canthan and Elonan content. It doesn’t necessarily mean it is anywhere near release, just that it will eventually happen.

A LOT of the NPC’s surrounding this event have Canthan roots though, so it does look real suspicious. As you’ve said Mai Trin and Marjory Delaqua, but also one of the Pirate Captains in Lions Arch with Magnus is of Canthan descent and has some rather shifty sounding dialogue.

Ok so that sort of suggests it’s an issue with how the texture is behaving with the model, since I’m almost certain that all of the small birds use the same model.
We should try running the game with the -dx9single command and seeing if that effects the laser hawks. I know back when I was using Crossover/Wine using -dx9single resolved texture stretching issues, but I have no idea if it would have any impact or effect on a cider port?

Of course diversity can be a great thing. But unfortunately I don’t think this is viable. Guild Wars 1 was releasing huge balancing updates 6 years after release, the more skills you have the more complex balancing becomes. I think more weapons is a better solution to the variety problem. When you allow people to select skills you just make it overly complex for new players and elitists become even more adamant that there is a meta and everyone should follow it.

I understand your annoyance with this, but it’s the same for any class. Elementalists have skills that require a target to actually to anything but of course you can cast it regardless of whether or not you have a target/there are enemies around – just nothing happens. So I understand the annoyance, but in a game with pseudo-action combat it becomes problematic if you start to restrict skills usage by factors like that.

It doesn’t make the name of the game meaningless. The name Guild Wars refers to the Guild Wars that took place historically before the Searing, it had nothing to do with the GvG that was in game.
That aside I do hope they bring Guild Halls back at some point and I believe they have said they are looking into it.
I definitely think the whole Asura Gate to your Guild Hall idea makes a lot of sense and is a really good idea. I think the only problem with them is that they don’t have a lot of function outside of GvG or RPing/meeting.

As to the other suggestion, PvP should never exist outside PvP zones. I’m all for 1v1 maps/capabilities inside PvP, but players shouldn’t have the ability to duel out in the open world, it’s messy and doesn’t encourage a positive PvEing experience. The world is made for PvE, the Mists are for PvP. Keep PvP there and leave PvE out in the open world.

But I think re-creating the GW1 special costumes or creating similar costumes isn’t a bad idea at all. People loved costumes in GW1 and I would love them if we had them in GW2 in a similar way (where they were a skin that wen’t over the top of regular armour rather than town clothes). Lets face it, town clothes were just a bad idea. I appreciate the sentiment but they have no purpose outsikitten and most players aren’t RPers.

I thought Aaron said we have jotun architecture in GW2.

But I just try to look at them as if they had civilizations the way humans do. Different architecture with different purposes and different utilities for those structures. So there’s nothing saying the HoM really is Jotun made. I just don’t want to discount the possibility until I get more information. We may find more from the Jotun with expansions as the unexplored areas open up.

Sorry I wasn’t reading very carefully and i think I mistook what you said.
But yeah definitely the Jotun had civilisation ins some sense close to what the current races have and would most likely have had a lot of different structures built for specific purposes in a range of styles. To me though, the lack of physical evidence of their civilisation suggests that it was all destroyed a long time ago, so it would be odd if the Eye was theirs because it still stands. Then again we really don’t know what it’s true or intended purpose was. For all we know the Mursaat constructed it and used the Scrying pool to travel into possible futures of Tyria that existed in the mists (I don’t think that at all though).

FlamingFoxx.1305

It’s possible. With multiple giant kings, each kingdom may have had different looking architecture. And most of the architecture may have been destroyed in all the wars the jotun have gone through.

But I don’t think it would be logical for Jotun architecture to have been destroyed but have the Eye with the ability to withstand all the earth shaking that went on with Jormag’s rise. I just don’t think the Jotun built well-lasting structures, if they did there would be evidence of it littered around Tyria, even if you destroy a building parts of it should be left over unless they weather with time and become used for other things or are built out of degrading materials like wood.

Why wouldn’t the Jotun make sense? That’s who I always assumed built it since we’ve already heard from ArenaNet that the Jotun were one of the (if not the) most advanced races on Tyria with magical understanding rivaling that of the six human gods before their collapse. Seems perfectly logical to me that a race with such intelligence and magical prowess created something as powerful as the HoM.

Notice how there is very little Jotun architecture around the world. Considering how there are no remnants of the Jotun’s past I wouldn’t think the Eye would be their creation. If they had the ability to create something as powerful and durable as the EoTN which has stood for (thousands/hundreds?) of years then there would be a lot more Jotun architecture left standing. I would also think the dwarves would have been able to identify it if it had been Jotun architecture. I think it’s far more likely to have been of Seer or Mursaat (or something else entirely) origins.

He does. In fact the book offhandedly mentions that they go back and forth between Kryta and Kaingeng a few times. I think in terms of the timeline it’s set not long after the end of Guild Wars Beyond, so it isn’t a big deal in the novel, it’s just trade as usual

I dont get why you are all so happy..I for one realised that 15 water and evasive arcana should be like the base for ele survivability..Not even something like fresh air can outweight the fact that ele base defence SUCKS..
This patch achieved nothing..It only forced EVERYONE in max cond removal only now we have our water line nerfed..Not even stability and 20 in earth is worth it with the necro plague.
Thx anet..but unless you really fix the arcana problem and the base ele defence nobody gonna use air/fire/earth grandmaster traits in serious pvp..
Thats my opinion of course

It’s kind of a problem that anet decided to give classes basically the same dps, but gave classes different health and armor. Thieves and Elementalists who spec full damage get 1 shot by boss attacks if they ever get hit, warriors can survive it while specced full dps.

the result is thieves and eles have to spec into surviving rather than damage.

Pretty much. Obviously if you’re like me and play a Staff ele who is spec’d into Earth and Water then the patch is great. I can understand why others aren’t so happy. I originally played as a fire ele, but you very quickly realise it isn’t viable when you’ve used your dodges and get hit by a boss and die >.>

A Case Against New Playable Races

in Suggestions

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

Anet has said before that they don’t want to recreate an entire new starting experience. As in, all future zones are more likely to be level 80 zones, which creates a pretty good case against new playable races. The one exception to this would be Tengu who could very easily share starting zones with the Sylvari, problem solved. (Tengu are about the only viable playable race, other than something brand new).

The biggest issue I see for new playable races comes from the existing content. Any new characters would have to be able to participate in the existing storyline (Anet has said they aren’t doing standalone campaigns like in GW1, so I state this confidently). But it doesn’t make sense to have a Tengu, who lore-wise had nothing to do with the fight against Zhaitan and as a race they have said they haven’t decided what action they want to take, fighting against Zhaitan. Not to mention they would never come across members of their own race (NPCs) during the storyline and a whole lot of content would cease to make sense.

I think there are a lot of very good reasons why new races aren’t likely. (Although I love Tengu and will play them happily if they do add new races)

New professions are far more likely to new races. Class balancing is easier than invalidating the entire games lore. (although not necessarily as desirable).

I think is possibly an unfortunate side effect of having too many writers shoving their hands into things, but that’s just opinion.

An opinion which I concur fully with. The Guild Wars franchise is really losing its originality with the living story, and I blame the larger, newer, writers.

It’s really quite sad. You can see the effects throughout the game with all the inconsistencies in style and content. It’s most noticeable in their recent reliance on lore based blog posts that fill in the massive gaps left by the personal story. If you compare the recent ones with the Story posts we had before GW2 was released there is a serious decline in narrative style and the awareness of lore and it’s situation within the game world.

I purchased Sea of Sorrows yesterday and I’m not very far in, but there is a noticeable difference that comes through in Ree’s writing, something the game has been sorely lacking of late. Even then I’ve seen people point out that there are inconstancies and contradictions within the novel which sort of suggests that it’s gotten to the point where too many people have messed around the with storylines that even Ree isn’t able to work fully within the confines.

I in no way mean this as a personal insult, but watching the latest videos with Angel McCoy is kind of cringeworthy, it feels as if the world has been reduced to a story that lacks breadth, intelligence and tangible mystery and now exist solely to cater to the mechanics that other divisions come up with and to the masses of people who don’t care too much about the story or aren’t familiar with the world.

The Inquest show no indication of being able to control anything. With the possible exception of Kudu’s Monster… though that’s still uncertain, given that there was no Inquest alive to try to control the thing.

There’s a scene in the explorable mode where some Inquest are fully surrounded by dragon minions that’re trying to attack them. Subject Alpha’s escape is all about an experimental multi-dragon-corrupted minion being outside of their control.

They were trying to create and control a dragon champion. Kudu turned himself into one more or less, but there’s no indication they were succeeding, beyond the fact that Kudu had dragon-related abilities and had his own mind.

Ahh ok. My bad, as I said, haven’t played CoE yet :P
Still stands to reason that the inquest wouldn’t really be aware of what was most convenient for the dragon to corrupt and would therefore simply corrupt whatever they wanted?

I had typed out another long response but I decided not to post it.
I’m just going to chalk this up to a lack of understanding/difference of opinion between us.

All mac users are using a product with a Beta tag. As in, a product that isn’t guaranteed release but is rather a test of viability. I do agree that there is a deficit of communication and that an acknowledgement of where they stand in relation to the continued support and development of the OSX client is necessary at some point. But at the end of the day the product works and works well so it isn’t something I feel is worth getting all hot and bothered over.

Their lack of communication isn’t a slight to mac users, I think it’s important to remember that a company is not a person, it is a collective of people, all of whom have their own jobs and responsibilities. It’s entirely possible that this issue stems from higher up from people who have nothing but the profit margins in mind and the result is that the people who do care aren’t able to offer the support they would like because they don’t have access to the financial means or support that they would ned to do so. Obviously it’s sad, but it’s because of that possibility that I don’t feel like bashing them on the issue. Take Ashley for example, she has obviously attempted to assist recently with situations, but for all we know she did that of her own accord and without pay (I say for all we know, not that she did or that it’s likely because I’m sure it isn’t I’m just using it as an example). The answers you want are quite possibly beyond her reach and there is unfortunately no way I know of contacting those who would have a direct impact on the situation. It’s out of my desire to respect that Anet is a company made up of individuals all of whom have to act in certain ways that I hold the viewpoint I do.
(The Tl;dr of that is basically that I understand you feel like you’ve been slighted or kept in the dark, but it’s entirely possible that their employees feel the same)

All in all we honestly have the same views Trog so I don’t want to argue with you. It’s just that I don’t want to be mad at someone without knowing exactly who to be mad at, and I don’t want to be mad at someone for something beyond their control. People are people.

(as to the initial comment, I’m someone who has, like a lot of people, been following GW2 since it’s announcement in 2007 after having been playing GW1 since it’s release in 2005. That is 9 years of investment in a company, so yeah I would have felt like it was a massive kick in the face if they had an OSX client that was only available to people who had purchased and played using Windows. I realise that for people who are new to the game it would be really easy to just see that there was no OSX client and walk way, but for those of us who have really invested a lot emotionally into the world of Tyria there is obviously going to be a different sentiment on the issue.) Scarlet…what a cliche name for a fantasy game. I actually Like Mr.E’s name alot more then scarlet(i am red haired and my character wears red etc etc so it’s not because i hate red).

I hope the white mantle plays a part in this story arc just because of their importance of working behind the scenes.

I think the White Mantle have been a little too inconspicuous thus far in GW2 to be included. They might include the Bandits or Separtists (who obviously are White Mantle in a sense and it is suspected/known that the higher ups are White Mantle), but I think they’d avoid using the Mantle until some Mursaat related storyline crops up?

Yeah Scarlet is a bit of a cliche, but then having a mysterious character identifying by a single initial isn’t all that original either. That’s just how this kind of fantasy tends to work (and I think is possibly an unfortunate side effect of having too many writers shoving their hands into things, but that’s just opinion).

obviously it was the Utopians

You know when they make a possible future expansion i hope the utopia idea gets reused as a new land or world. So many wasted ideas it’s sad to see alot of them go unused.

I think they’d be unlikely to do that simply because they did reuse a lot of the ideas in EoTN and going forward into GW2. What is left over once you cut out everything that was either used, adapted or flat out rejected probably doesn’t form anything cohesive. The idea of a Utopian land could be used and is hinted at in lore I guess, but a lot of the architecture and ideas were already adapted into what we saw in EoTN and went on to inform the current Asuran architecture etc.

I haven’t done CoE yet so please correct me if I’m wrong.
But could it not be likely that the Dragons corrupt that which they can easily control. So that isn’t to say that they can’t corrupt things, but like you said rather that they choose not to. Therefore with the Inquest they corrupt things the dragons themselves don’t normally corrupt because they’re able to exert some kind of control over them through their own technologies? (like I said, haven’t done CoE yet so I’m only working with the limited knowledge of it that I do have).
