^— It isn’t a possibility. They have ALL undertaken the rite of the dwarf. They are ALL stone, they have been changed body and mind and it’s quite obviously suggested that it is irreversible. They exist solely with the purpose of defeating Primordius and his minions and once they’ve accomplished that they’re likely cease to be ‘alive’.
Elves will never happen, Anet wanted to stay away from Western Fantasy tropes, as had been mentioned this is why we have the Sylvari. Sylvari are <3, we don’t need elves, elves are humans with pointy ears.

We already have a short race, they’re called Asura and they are 10000x better than dwarves, dwarves are ugly bearded short people…

Camera problems

FlamingFoxx.1305

If this is of any use. When i am at home on my personal network which is high speed cable this problem is extremely rare but does occur. The client restart fixes it each time. While here on the relatives ISP I did notice one other thing unique to being here. Every time I start the client I get a tgupdate 1.11 loading before the client. At home I never saw this since getting the game last august.

Then I would suggest you’re having an issue with the network settings either on your mac in system preferences or on your relatives router. It doesn’t sound like an issue with the OSX GW2 client, it shouldn’t care what ISP you’re using.
Also is it the MOUSE going beserk or the camera? As in, is the pointer flinging itself around the screen, or is your camera view spinning, and if so when it spins does your mouse pointer stay still.

Can I suggest you try it with a mac mouse or trackpad if you have one. And if not then try a completely different mouse.

graphic and performance suggestion?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

Well unfortunately you’re using a 13" Mac with an integrated Intel graphics card, so performance isn’t going to be great.
I would suggest you turn the Shader, Shadows and Post Processing to their lowest possible settings and make sure that you don’t have Distance Blur, Best Texture Filtering or Vertical Sync ticked because they will all slow down your performance. With that you might be able to have everything else on mid settings without having too bad performance. Putting the Sampling to Native will be the best for visual quality, if you put it to sub-sampling the game won’t look very good, but will perform a lot better. I would suggest using the next resolution down from your nature resolution, anything lower might make it hard to play and playing at native resolution might be too much of a hit to your performance.

The best thing I can suggest is just to fiddle around with the settings until you find something that works for you. Make sure you aren’t testing in Lions Arch or any other crowded areas because the FPS will be low in those areas regardless.

SweetFX

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

You can always try it.
I’m not familiar enough with how SweetFX works, but I’d be inclined to say that it wouldn’t work. There is a C drive, but it only contains what is absolutely necessary for GW2 to run, if you put something inside of it it won’t run itself and it won’t have it’s own cider files to tell it how to run. But as I said I’m not really familiar with SweetFX, so I could easily be wrong.

- I did a quick test, nothing comprehensive, but as far as I can tell it doesn’t work. It produced a log file which suggests it tried to initialise SweetFX, but there were no changes in game. I would assume that it won’t work because OSX does not have DirectX, which is what SweetFX uses to run (you place directX settings files inside the folder with the gw2.exe). I would suggest you have a go anyway since you’re probably more familiar with it than me? Let us know if your attempts yield any results.

FlamingFoxx.1305

Just checking, have you edited the cider command preferences or run the game using the -repair command before?
Also, can you ensure that there is actually a GW2 folder in Application Support and that it isn’t rebuilding it every time you launch the game.

The easiest solution for this:
Open your applications folder>>
Right click ‘Guild Wars 2’>>
Click ‘Show Package Contents’>>
Contents>>Resources>>Transgaming>>C_drive>>GW2>>
Inside that folder ^. Is a file called GW2.dat, it should be around 17GB. COPY IT TO YOUR DESKTOP.>>
Delete the Guild Wars 2 application, the Guild Wars 2 folder in Application Support and the transgaming files in the preferences folder in the library (if you know how, if you don’t it probably doesn’t matter).>>
Guild Wars 2 should now be completely removed.
Go to guildwars2.com and download the game. Begin the installer, but close it when it begins to download all of the game files again.
Repeat the initial instructions on how to get to the Package Contents of Guild Wars 2 and replace the new GW2.dat with the one you copied on to your desktop, this will put all of the game files back.

Now when you launch Guild Wars 2 it might do a short download to verify the contents of the .dat, but after that I would expect it to run normally and allow you to log in and play instantly (providing there hasn’t been a patch to the client of course).

New Update - Drains Power?

FlamingFoxx.1305

I found it varies from play to play. I’ve only played a few hours over the last few days, only 1 time I had “significant” battery drain. (significant meaning it took my battery more than a few minutes to recover after playing, normally it catches up depending on heat and activity level)

I will still keep an eye on it as well.

Yeah well it’s based on how hard your system is having to work, so if you’re doing a large event, WvW or are in Lions Arch the power is more likely to drain. Whereas if I’m in a less-used area like Timberline Falls it isn’t so system intensive and my charge actually goes up.

Just a side note. The Trading Post thing isn’t really to do with the mac client. Even on Windows there are time when it just wont load – usually when you’ve been in a crowded area such as WvW, Lions Arch or a large scale event. If you can close the client, reopen it and open the TP straight away and it works then the issue is most likely not the OSX client.

I recently deleted Bootcamp. The performance was close enough (~5fps) that I would just rather run it in OS X (10.8.5 right now). Granted I can’t run FXAA, High Textures or High-Res Characters but the tradeoff of not having bootcamp is worth it to me. Just a FWIW/FYI/SA kind of thing.

Haha I thought this was just on my comp… laser hawk!

In sadder news, my client is having real problems launching since the update. Usually takes me 2-5 times launch to get game started, now its more like 5-10. Even have deleted library files, but that never really worked for me anyways.

One big suggestion I can make, go into the contents of your Guild Wars 2 app and copy the GW2.dat file (should be about 17GB) to your desktop then delete all of GW2, the app itself and the application support folder. Re-download it from the website and begin the install, but instead of letting it redownload all the files just take the copy of your gw2.dat file that you made and put it back inside the new gw2.app. That way you force everything to purge except for the game data itself which shouldn’t have any issues.

Mac Book Pro Retina 13" Problems

FlamingFoxx.1305

I posted in the other thread as well but I’ll paste the important bit here anyway:

It’s your graphics card that is letting you down. It is an Intel integrated card so it’s power is limited.
The one big suggestion I can make. Don’t run GW2 at a retina resolution. 1280×800 is the typical 13" resolution so I suggest you run it at that, anything higher is putting strain on your graphics card and processor.

^— That resolution bit is really important. You’re using a 13" laptop, which is not all that powerful, with a very very high resolution screen that takes up a lot of resources and power…

I am running Guild Wars 2 basically all on low but some things can be medium to high like textures. This bring me to around 20FPS. I want it to be a bit faster and have no problem running on medium! I was wondering if there is still hope for me if the mac beta is updated sometime to make it better. OR is it my specs that are throwing me down. I know however I am a step up from the minimum requirements. Is it possible to get better FPS?

I have a brand new retina display 13" 2013
My specs are:
Intel i7 3.0hz
8 GB RAM
500+ SSD
Intel HD4000

It’s your graphics card that is letting you down. It is an Intel integrated card so it’s power is limited.

The one big suggestion I can make. Don’t run GW2 at a retina resolution. 1280×800 is the typical 13" resolution so I suggest you run it at that, anything higher is putting strain on your graphics card and processor.

Also note that there are events going on at the moment so there are a lot of players around. That means that in a lot of areas your FPS will be much lower than it would otherwise be.

Considering they are putting so much work into next weeks patch, my assumption is that they took the time to fix the gem store since it was hurting their pocket books and will now scurry back to working on that patch. Hopefully they take notice of us sooner or later though….

Not even xD. They will have had maybe two people looking into the mac issue out of their entire team. Mac users make up a very small teeny tiny portion of the playerbase, our impact on their pocket books will be relatively small – we’ve already paid for the game and they will have a very large number of gem purchases each day, of which mac users would be a very teeny tiny portion of….

Ashley addressed the issue almost as soon as it popped up. It’s not as if the issue has been there for a long period of time and they’ve just realised they’re losing money and had to quickly fix it…

Also note that it was a fix to the cider wrapper that fixed the issue – not a change to the client. Most of their staff probably don’t have a clue how to fix mac related issues, as I’ve said 100 times they are Windows developers who are used to working with Direct X etc etc etc, this is the work of one or two people who have diligently reacted to a problem that was within their ability to fix – the staff members who work on the technical problems are not the same staff members who work on content releases or balance issues, so I doubt anyone was pulled off working on the patch to fix the issue.

You’re comment is made hilarious by the fact that in GW1 travelling between outposts was free, armour didn’t ever need repairing and you could change your skills whenever you felt like it… It didn’t break GW1, it worked really well. I’m not saying GW2’s systems don’t work well, but there is room for improvement. THe issue people have is wanting to be able to change builds quickly in order to run a dungeon with their friends and then change it back afterwards, do you have any idea how annoying that can be when you have to pay to WP to a city, pay the trainer, pay to WP to the dungeon, pay for repairs in the dungeon, pay to WP back to the city, pay the trainer again… It adds up and it’s time consuming, especially for those of us who live in areas where fast internet isn’t accessible at all.. Don’t be rude just because you don’t have the same issues as someone else.

Exciting:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1595403
That is a thread on people testing gaming performance on OSX 10.9

Someone asked if anyone had tested Guild Wars 2 and this was the response they got:
“It is actually playable now, I am getting FPS which is only slightly lower than on Windows. And the annoying stuttering when rotating the camera is almost gone.”

So it looks like hopefully 10.9 will offer a performance boost for most users. Just have to wait for (August?)

10.9 actually includes OpenGL 4. We’re not 10 years behind anymore! So yeah, mac game support might significantly improve if Apple actually cares about game developers (and I don’t mean the trot iD or whoever on stage for a WWDC demo then ignore everyone the rest of the year).

From what I can tell it isn’t the most recent version of OpenGL 4 though, which is a bit sad. But still, a massive improvement xD.

New Update - Drains Power?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: FlamingFoxx.1305

FlamingFoxx.1305

^—- You can’t take plugged in charge battery as an indication of this. MBP’s periodically allow the battery to drain itself while plugged in because the lithium ion batteries need power to be either constantly put in or out. MBP’s won’t ever let you stay on a 100% charge because it’s bad for the battery and shortens its life. So being down at 92% just means that it was allowing the battery to drain for a while at that specific time. If it goes below 90% then it definitely is using more power than is being input, but I don’t think it will.

Also, I would not recommend playing GW2 on your battery without being plugged in. You’re gaming and forcing the laptop to switch to the higher powered graphics card rather than the integrated. The battery will drain quickly and you will increase your battery cycle count – the more your cycle count increases the less charge your laptop can hold.

-Edit- Ok, it does seem to be draining power… Went from 74% down to 73%, however that was after 1 and a half hours of playing, so I don’t think it’s a serious issue. But definitely not ideal.

Racial Expansions

FlamingFoxx.1305

They’ve already said they won’t race-lock professions. Race or gender locking is the first step towards losing all of your players…
Also racial expansions doesn’t really work. The idea is that all the races have come TOGETHER in the fight against the dragons. The Dragons present equal threat to all the races and provide the basis for player interactions within the game. I understand that some races might have specific reasons to dislike a dragon more than the rest, but when it comes down to it the Dragons threat Tyria as a whole, not one specific race.

As for Centaur’s being good/evil. The Tyrian Centaur’s have a very long deep rooted hatred for humans, the Elonian Centaur’s however didn’t seem to have so much hatred for them. Ventari is one of the few exceptions for Tyrian Centaurs however.

Race Change wouldn’t work…
You’ve played through an entire personal story on your way to level 80, one where you’ve made changes that impact what missions you’ve played.
If you changed races the game would have no idea what choices you would have made and you will have no idea what the story behind your race is…
If you want to play a different race then make a new character. Levelling is a quick process and you can transfer most of your items to a new character.

A race change item is mechanically a nightmare and so it is very unlikely to happen.. If you picked the wrong race that’s sort of your own fault… You have 5 character slots, one to try out each of the 5 races, for a reason.

Wow, hold it. No one ever said ALL turned to stone. They only said that no one knows a Dwarf that hasn’t bee turned to stone. :P There might still be some normal but who knows?

No.. They ALL turned to stone. It’s a Dwarf thing, they had to undergo the rite of the dwarf and join the battle against Primordius…. Even the Stone Summit turned to stone.
If there were still fleshy dwarves you would have seen them, they would not be underground fighting Primordius because they wouldn’t be stone and would have died very very quickly…

Exactly! Ogden Stonehealer is the only dwarf that still communicates with the above ground world. There’s no telling what’s going on under ground! The GW2 Wiki says "As of the present, no dwarf of FLESH AND BLOOD remains. There could still be stone dwarves under ground battling destroyers, boogins, and other monsters of the underground.

Yes… They are underground fighting Primordius, but they are all stone and their sole purpose is killing Primordius and his minions. You can’t have a compelling playable race whose soul purpose in life is to kill Primordius and accomplish absolutely nothing else.

The one big issue is that there are dungeons with mechanics that require multiple players. For example the AC path with the chains that cause spikes to come out of the ground wouldn’t be possible solo because you can’t divert their attention and pull chains at the same time. Making them easy to kill without the chains would be ruining the feel of the dungeon.

SO yes the temporary content can be immersive, but only for those who get to play in it and get to play in ALL of it.

I managed to do parts of the Living Story arcs, but there were gaps where I couldn’t play and I imagine it’s the same for a lot of people. It makes it feel very unimmersive because you’ve missed out whole bits but the game treats things as if you know EXACTLY what is going on… Which you don’t.. Yeah, it would seem, but there is nothing quite like it in there, or anywhere else i could find on my hard drive. But I did find a gw2.tmp within the application contents folder for gw2. I wonder if this is similar or not. This is where the 17gb dat file is, the crash.dmp, and gw2.log are located, it is 0bytes in size though. Still no temp cache or anything like it otherwise. Nor do we seem to run awesomium, but there is note of awesomium in the config file.

Really not sure, I’m hoping our standard gw2 folder is the only one we ever have to worry about (until we get that native client lol… Maybe…someday), and all these extraneous windows folders/files are just that… Extraneous.

I know that there was a similarish issue experienced by Wine users and editing the registry and adding an awesomium key value was able to fix the issue. But I would have to do some serious playing around and swap files between Wine and the GW2 client to see if it’s possible to edit the registry values that cider uses. I know there is a file which should have the registry values, but I’m not entirely sue it’s recognisable by windows :S.
I can try having a look, but it will have to be the day after tomorrow since I have an exam tomorrow >.>

“Hi. There are many factors that can cause problems with the Trading Post and/or Gem Store. In order to diagnose your specific problem, we’ll need you to submit a customer support ticket, please. Also, please include any relevant information, such as your operating system, your PC specs, and firewall info.
We’re sorry that you’re experiencing this issue and hope we can help you.
Before you submit your ticket, you can try clearing your cache. To do this, you will want to close GW2 and:
1. Click the Windows start button.
2. Search for temp
3. Find any gw2cache folders and delete them.
Relaunch the game.
I hope this fixes it for you, but if it doesn’t, please follow my initial instructions.”

Lol, without being too incompetent, I got them now ;p

Edit:just found the file referenced on my bootcamp partition. Not sure how that will equate on the Mac, but going to have a go now.

Hrmmm. Technically the cider wrapper creates windows folders inside the Application Support folder to emulate windows and allow the program to run. So the cache would be in there. Unless there is a separate cache handled by OSX, in which case peoples best bet would be to download a program like Onyx and use it to clear out temporary files and the system caches etc. But even then I don’t think that would have much of an effect.
It seems like if this was the same issue as it is on Windows then deleting the Guild Wars 2 folder in Application Support and forcing it to rebuild it should fix the problem.

They do test content before putting it out, it’s just very hard for them to completely test how things will react on the live server.

I absolutely agree Trog. A straight forward answer about the current status or “near” future updates would be fantastic. I’d truly love to know where we stand.

I won’t be ungrateful for the support Ashley is trying to give, just remember, a staff member is reading this finally.

Better than the support elsewhere, yesterday or so, I saw Jeremiah Lee (may have misspelled) give the pc-ers a set of instructions to clear the gw2 cache on windows to try and help repair a wonky tp…so I casually asked “How could we do this on Mac?” he said in a few more words, “submit a ticket.” most Mac users’ questions are just ignored there.

Please, update us on the status of the Mac client!!!! Is it going anywhere? Should we expect any updates or bug fixes any time soon? Will there ever be anything other than this beta client (native client)? Anything? Will the mac client start receiving regular support again?

Where was the cache? If you gave me the windows instructions I could possibly figure out how to do it on OSX? It wasn’t the .tmp or .log was it?

Future Playable Races

All non human races were kicked out of Cantha, so none of those are viable. Also Hylek aren’t from/found in Cantha, the Naga are an enemy race and we have never seen a non-hostile Naga. The Wardens are wardens of the forrest, we don’t really know if they are truly sentient.
Dwarves will not be playable, they’ve all turned to stone and are now fighting Primordius… Jotun aren’t quite intelligent enough and the Yeti DEFINITELY are not intelligent enough.
The Luxon and Kurzick factions were dissolved by the Canthan Emperor… So they wont be making a return.

If there is a new playable race it’s most likely to be either the Tengu or the Largos. Even then it’s not all together that likely to happen. Anet have stated before that when creating new areas or opening up zones they don’t want to recreate a beginning (as in level 1) zone/storyline again. Which sort of probably rules out new races.

If you DID get a new race it would be one or two, not 5….

Not to mention adding in new races creates problems with the existing storyline. They can’t go back and for example add Tengu in to the fight against Zhaitan, but any new players playing the Tengu would need to be able to play through the original storyline. It would be really really weird for them to do so without ever seeing another Tengu and it creates problems with the Order storylines and the Racial sympathy storylines. Not to mention it would create a massive inconsistency in the timeline..
And you can’t just make it so that new races can’t complete the original storyline, because you’re then limiting the content players can participate in. To make it fair you’d have to prevent current players from using their characters in new storylines. What you end up with then is two entirely separate games…

I do agree that we should be able to explore it.
But maybe if they just converted it into a small outpost type area, rather than putting enemies and events on it.

I think one of the reasons it isn’t repeatable is because the enemies drop bags with high tier crafting materials. People would get very rich very quickly if they could repeat it. That’s probably also partly why it’s solo – to stop people from de-doing it with their friends.
