The ranger will have to use the 1500 range longbow trait to his advantage, and quickly use “2” + QZ and pet swap quickness.
But if the mesmer manages to get 3 Izekers up , you’re dead.

Mesmer pops Feedback or Mimic on the ranger and the ranger quickly ends up killing himself.

If we`re actually talking about competant players here, why can`t the ranger stop autoattacking for a second exactly?.

Robert, let tell you what I think adding a pet dodge mechanic will resolve for 90% of your Ranger player base: nothing.

Like Gutbuster has stated, “Often it’s difficult enough to know exactly when you need to dodge in order to avoid some damage, with a pet dodge you’d be required to not only keep track of your own position but also your pet’s exact position which also trying to see your pet amongst all the spell graphics surrounding bosses getting nuked, seeing red circles on the floor which may be behind the boss since that’s where your pet is, camera angles etc the list goes on a bit. In addition you’d also have to hit your own dodge key as well as an additional F key or any other key bind you have.”

I agree with him whole heartedly.

Yes, without a doubt there will be a small fraction of Ranger players that will benefit from the mechanic: the “Pro” player, if you will. These people have ridiculously quick reflexes, as well a superb RIGs and a mouse with dozens of key binds they have no problem dealing with. I’m NOT talking bad about these players; hey, god bless ’em, they are the exceptions to the general rule, and they make the most of it. These tend to be your best of the best players and are often found in sPvP/tPvP.

But for the non-PRO player, adding a dodge mechanic for the pet will be an utter waste of time in dealing with the problem of Pets dying from AOE too much in dungeons —- the difference will be insignicant for the typical Ranger player who is under heavy duress from swarms of mobs, surrounded with heavy particle effects and trying to keep himself alive and contributing to the party.

Look, I’m not talking about that bottom 5 to 10% either, the folks that really have very poor reflexes and positional awareness, and who really can’t cope with the basic pace of this game. At least not in a difficult dungeon setting anyway. No, I’m referring to that big fat mass of players in the middle: also known as: the “majority” – the “average” – the “typical”.

For this group, many of the ideas being offered here will only result in the outcome stated by Shiren, “So micromanaging and resource management are the game-play being pushed by that kind of design. A lot of us play the class for the AI companion, not a micromanaged companion. Micromanaging, while increasing the skill cap (in a certain way), isn’t going to solve the problem for a lot of rangers, and for many players it takes the class in a direction they don’t want to go in.”

In essence many of the changes being proposed would transform the Ranger into a class that does not resemble the one that many people were looking for when they rolled it. Please keep this in mind as you consider the many OTHER options that exist to address pet mechanics and survivability.

We’re aware of that. Again part of what that list is, is a launching point for conversation and dialogue. Part of our jobs as designers is to take feedback and try to figure out the core of what is being said, and develop plans around that. I’m not saying those things are going to happen – I wish I could, but I can’t. It’s just something I can turn into a bullet point for us to address and talk about. These things take time, but I promise you I will be bringing these things up.

Oh, and in regards to the Jade Maw targeting pets, I made the conscious decision to allow it to target non-players. I have the ability to change that, but I prefer not to on the grounds that there is some gameplay there. My pet has made the ultimate sacrifice quite a few times while we res’d a down party members, providing groups with a much needed window to help others up and recover. I know it can be a bit frustrating if everything is going great and you’re not having any problems, but I’d much rather the pet provide a moment of relief for those struggling. I am open to debate on the subject, but that is for threads over in the dungeon forum, not here

The issue isn`t that the thing is targetting pets, but it likes to target them while they`re downed already.

Well in dungeon instances, picking up a devourer or spider will help them stay up longer being ranged. As for yourself your stat setup seems fine, but in terms of utilities something like lightning reflexes or the signet that pulls conditions away is good to have. In terms of using traps, a good approach I have found is instead of dropping them and waiting for a mob/group of mobs to jump on them it is easier to throw traps at mobs to get maximum spread.

I’m not sure if anyone has brought this up, but this might be one of the reasons many rangers have been kicked off of fractal runs. The Jade maw has this infatuation with firing his beam of hyper death face roll at pets even if they are downed.

I’ve never got this argument, the majority of the damage is done by killing the tentacles, most higher level players I know don’t even bother with the crystals and just dodge as it’s safer, you are not going to see the slide by and fail to pick up bug, and your not going to have to go looking for a crystal. If the Maw is targeting the pet, then good, it means that people can concentrate on DPSing tentacles rather than dodging/finding crystals.

Well the thing about that it, it makes it take alot longer, I’ve had instances where the thing has shot my pet three times in a row, getting to the point where I just stand around not attacking so my pet doesn’t get unstowed since the tentacles will 2-4 hit any melee pet.

Rangers are pretty much the best PvE class if you know how to spec them, and you have a decent gear. Sure they do a bit less damage than warrior, but then again everyone does. However, rangers can’t get downed or die (unless rest of the team is dead) and they do massive damage (again, if you spec properly). I do any dungeon, fractal, and even did Simin (arah 4) few times without any problem before the last patch (when he got nerfed), where we had 2 rangers. It’s all about knowing how to build and how to play.

Yea, the class with no reflects, bad party wide boons, not much utility outside of rezing, pets who get destroyed in dungeons, and bad melee damage compared to other classes is definitely the best PvE class… that must be why so many people love rangers in their groups.

You have just opened everyone’s eyes to the power of the ranger that no one could see.

No reflects? Offhand axe.
Bad partywide boons? When it 18s of fury, swiftness and might bad?
Bad melee damage? Show me a melee build with a disengage, and two dodgs on the weapon skills.
Bad pets? They’re being looked at.

I’ll look into it and try to make sure Grast uses the bubble properly, but we also made the roar he uses to summon the boulders interruptable so a focused group could stand a chance if Grast died or ever misbehaved.

Grast also get’s killed pretty easily if the boss decides he’s annoying.

That is pretty rediculous. I know for a fact that I’ve run at least 18 level 10 fractals without AR as a Ranger without anyone even asking for a gearcheck. Fractal don’t even require you to have AC at earlier levels because most of the tim you can avoid it.

Sorry about that. I just get irritated when someone calls the longbow completely worthless, since its my favourite weapon.

Anyways, I’ve had trouble activating my wolf’s F2 skill while downed, sometimes I’ll continuously mash the button in WvW but it’ll just stand there while the thief invisible stomps me. Could there be a problem with activating pet F2 skills when you don’t have a target selected?

LB is a terrible weapon. it’s so sad that devs dont actually realize this, and newbs keep saying positive things about it on the forums. LB rangers in WvW are an embarrassment. thing is people dont realize how amazing a high RoF weapon like the power/crit SB is with sigil of fire. range is about the same, and utility so much greater.

anyway, getting off topic here. let me just add that the LB does not synergize well with the pet, mostly because both the pet and the LB fail at longer ranges. LB also fails at 900 or closer, where pets are most effective. issue is, at longer rangers both the pet and the arrows can be juked effortlessly. and landing your barrage cripple + pet combo requires a ridiculous amount of micromanagement for a subpar effect, while often making u dead while u channel. SB on the other hand gives you a spammable cripple that is effective at any range.

Tell me how long you have used the longbow and how you’re using the longbow before you make a claim like that.

I don’t see the longbow as a weak primary weapon at all. In WvW situations, as long as I’m not being snuck up on the longbow is great as deterrent to melee builds as I can dish out up to 4k crits with 1500 range.

IMO, full auto-loot for WvW, and the Loot Bags for PVE. Both systems as they currently exist make it fairly easy to miss loot. In WvW there’s not always the time or opportunity to stop and search for bags, and in PVE since there are no bags, sometimes it’s just plain difficult to see where the loot is. I would love to be able to hold down a key in PVE and see those yellow letters “Bag of Loot” or even just “Loot” over all my drops. As it is now, I scurry around over all the remaining corpses, just in case I missed the sparkles, and it’s a pain.

The overflow system is a joke.When the boss spawns, the overflow is always full…Problem is, Anet are so lazy to fix the lag in a proper way, if thats the solution they wanna use, well then, its time for me to find another game.Im not speaking for myself.Alot of my ingame freinds, are very disapointed about this, a few allready left, cos they tired of Anet keep punishing the player again, and again, and yet again…So keep up the work Anet.This game will be a ghost game withing a year

From what I’ve experienced, dealing around 1-2k damage to a player is usually enough, probaby on a 10% of target health as a basis. As long as you hit them and I think if they don’t go outside of combat you qualify for the loot. Not much experience with support abilities, but it was stated that they made it easier to get credit for using these.

How big an issue is influence for maps that get overflows during the two step group events. Also the best solution for this is to get there early, spent maybe 10-15 minutes before the window or pre-events and just spend your time doing something like costume brawl or surrounding content, many people do this.

When the alternate is those people abusing the exploit to cheat… yes, kick everyone out.

How is playing the game regularly exploiting, you team gets disconnected, the other team keeps playing. You want to punish them for playing the game, not exploiting a bug.

I am still here and watching. I’m currently composing a list of ideas and statements from this thread to bring to our balance meetings (held multiple times per week), that I can present to at least talk about with the group.
I go to the meetings as a representative for rangers and dungeons, since I play both of those things extensively. Here’s how my list is looking so far:

Core problems: (Note: we are very aware of both of these things)
-Pet AI.
-Pet management tools

Things to investigate:
-Pets auto attacks only hitting a single target.
-On “return” command, your pet gains swiftness so it can escape out of red rings more easily.
-A button that makes your pet momentarily not take damage. A sort of “Dodge” button for you to control. This is mainly due to us making sure players know how to use their dodge-roll or damage mitigation skills, which pets don’t have, and don’t always know how to escape properly when recalled without a direct pet swap.
-Pet/minion AR that is shared with the master’s stats.
-More defensive pet skills.
-Vigor applied to pets turns into swiftness or protection.
-In dungeons, pet’s get more health/armor.

What about issues with getting obstructed and out of range against targets that are not obstructed when firing bows. Often times a player can completely dodge what should be a 3k longbow crit by stepping strafing left and right.

Okay, so we know a Thief can do this. It seems only logical since they have such high evading capabilities. Warriors used to be able to do solo this guy, but I’m not sure about now. Have there been any other reported professions able to solo Lupicus (proof or very well argued theories)?

My guess of other possible professions:
Elementalist, Guardian, Mesmer(?)

I bet a ranger could do it easy… it just might take a bit longer. Sword\dagger and short bow, and go full condi and evasion, and I bet it could be done. I may just have to try it myself… but I imagine people who say I am using dev stuff and not being fair.

Condi not worth it on a ranger, go full power. More DPS and no need to run traps.

Because dps is the only factor in success.

Rangers have their highs and lows like every other class. They have really good DPS, but they have to work at it a bit more than other classes like warrior or mesmer. It’s possible just not as easy.
As for ranger balance, we have frequent meetings about balance where we discuss that sort of stuff – I go to those meetings on behalf of dungeon content and to lend my experience with ranger knowledge.

I personally accept the tradeoff of damage for survivability (Can’t do damage if you’re dead). I tend to run a condition build using shortbow and sword\dagger, and focus on being supportive and holding aggro while keeping a steady output of DPS through conditions. Rangers have an incredible amount of evasion and damage mitigation if you are very focused and know when to use your skills and heals (prot on dodge roll, vigor on heals) means you can keep prot for when you mess up, and always have evasions ready. There are some very successful dungeon builds, but most of them aren’t DPS focused.
We’re working on ideas for making pets better in dungeons. There’s a list of reasons we can’t just tweak a number and call it good (it wouldn’t actually solve the problem), but it is something we are aware of and working on.
One of the things you have to think about, is how the game is played. If we buff rangers just for dungeons, than they are too strong for the open world. Considering I can solo most content in the open world by letting my pet tank, I feel ranger is very powerful outside of dungeons. We can’t have rangers that change based on PvP, open world, and dungeons because that gets too confusing for players and puts us on a slippery slope. Whatever we do to the ranger, it has to happen in both the open world and dungeons, so it requires more than just number tweaks. You see a lot of bots as rangers for that very reason – they are really strong open world classes, and buffing them for the sake of dungeons doesn’t work out to being a good fix.

I’ve noticed that with the recent patch that I can’t interrupt myself using the longbow volley by activating a different weapon skill anymore and the only way I can do this is by dodging, which is pretty bad because you only can use two at any time. This is a pretty big issue for me because I usually switch to barrage halfway through the volley.
