Here’s a message about the subject of Guild Halls from content programmer Alina Chadwick:

During a live stream, while we were still in development for Heart of Thorns, we reported that the maximum number of guild hall decorations would be 2000. As the system went through further iteration we found that this number was not possible and in order to ensure the stability of the guild system we needed to reduce the maximum to 1000 before ship.

The reason for the limits on the placement of specific items within a certain radius is two-fold. In the arena, turrets and other such active obstacles run scripts that consider the players and obstacles around them. Having too many of these in close proximity to one another is detrimental to server performance. For this reason, those obstacles have their own special density limit that is separate from that used by static obstacles and decorations.

For decorations in the guild hall proper, and for static obstacles, care must be taken to prevent too many models from being visible on the screen at a given time, otherwise framerate can degrade significantly on less powerful machines. Without specific limits it would be possible for a member of your guild to place decorations in a way that works perfectly well on their powerful machine but which makes your guild hall unplayable for your guild mates with less powerful computers. The limits prevent significant performance issues but are high enough to allow a wide range of creativity.

I hope that info is helpful, and thanks to Alina for the details!

There is no standard answer to this question because, in order to be as fair and reasonable as possible, each situation is reviewed and resolved on a case-by-case basis. So whatever the speculation about “this is policy” or “that thing happened to my friend” the fact is: If you have questions about your personal request, please discuss with Customer Support, and they will investigate the matter and resolve it to the best of their ability.

A message from the PvP Team:

Hey Mists Walkers,

The issue with the achievement “Primordial Legend” will be fixed shortly when Customer Support sends everyone who has reached Legendary in PvP Season 1 an item that will complete the achievement. If the achievement is already completed then consuming the item will do nothing. However, if your achievement did not complete properly after entering Legendary, then consume the item and the achievement will complete and the title “Primordial Legend” will be available for use.

Congratulations to every one of the legends of PvP Season 1 and see you in the Mists!

Well played, kaat!

And yes, most truly “smote” is best and I’ll try to remember to use the proper term in the future. However, for the most part, if you say “smote” in mixed company you’re going to get some level of polite derision.

I just like to say “sticks”

But “I bopped him with a stick” sounds so much less epic than “I smited him with my staff!”

Don’t you mean smote?

I do! But when people give me funny looks for “staves” I don’t want to even think about entering Smote Country.

For game-related useage, I prefer “staves,” and I say “staves”… but when someone looks confused, I then say “You know, staffs?” (Like Danikat above.) But when I think of writing music, and staff paper, I think “staffs” and not “staves.” And considering the employees of a company, I’d go with “multiple corporate staffs” instead of the alternative.

I guess, to me, “staves” relates to the physical staff, as in a weapon, walking stick, or shepherd’s tool.

Interestingly, Dictionary.com has about an even split: 6 for staffs; 5 for staves.

Why Rep Guilds in 2016?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gaile Gray

Previous

Gaile Gray

ArenaNet Communications Manager

Next

To me, repping a guild is a matter of honor. If I’m going to take the time to join a guild and find out about them, and they about me; if I’m going to invest my game time, gold, and mats with this guild, and they’re investing their time helping me, then I want to be proud to represent them.

It’s nice that guilds don’t have to require 100% repping anymore, and it gives their members a lot more freedom. But, as a guild leader, I’m watching to see what my guild members do, or don’t do, when thinking about to whom i should offer promotions. Just as I would rep my guild in order to show my pride in, and loyalty to, them, I would hope to see the same from my guild members.

I think it would be difficult to develop a tight-knit group if everyone is always off doing his or her own thing, with no thought to loyalty to those who ‘have your back’ so to speak.

I dunno, maybe I’m old fashioned in that regard.

100% this. You are not the only one.

I am proud to rep a guild. I agree with you both, it’s a matter of pride and honor. Granted I usually represent the dev guild, but even there, our guildies have worked hard to build up our Guild Hall, and my repping Anet is a sign of respect for everyone involved and of support for my fellow team members.

For the other guilds to which I belong, I represent as I’m playing with them, or when I visit with them, and again, it’s not for any sort of “reward” but a sign of commonality with everyone in the guild: We like this game, we like this group of people. For me, it’s really that simple.

there is a definite area limitation similar to how wvw siege is capped at 5 pieces in any ring of radius 1500ish. the limit on decorations is more like 15-20 in 1000 radius or so, but it is a frustrating thing to fight against when trying to go crazy with building jps or other things. (speaking from experience!)

But let’s be fair! We don’t want you blowing the heck out of your enemies by using that lethal potted plant!

More seriously, though, I understand about the area limit. We’ll see what there is to learn about it.

Hey Gaile, any news, or plans on eliminating the decoration limit in areas? it really stifles creativity

I believe the limit on decorations is a practical matter, just as storage and other things also have limits. If you think about it, having no limits might result in huge “bloat” as someone acquired 5 gazillion items or 3.4 bazillion storage slots.

I will ask, to be sure I’m speaking accurately, but I believe that limits are required on a lot of different things as a practical element of development. Or… are you asking about limits within specific areas of the map? Before I ask, I should get clarification on your question. Thanks!

As you may have read in today’s update notes, the decoration restriction in the upper area of the Gilded Hollow guild hall has been removed. This means that you will be able to address any issues that your guild hall had with decorations being accidentally embedded in the topmost areas of the hall.

However, you should know that in order to retrieve those decorations, you’ll need to use the “Clear Decorations” option for your guild hall. This will remove all decorations and allow you to reposition each of them. The team investigated other ways to address this issue, and programmatically, the “Clear Decorations” option is the only one that is feasible. We apologize for any inconvenience that this change may present you.

^^^^

I have seen Gaile Gray play a million times She is often seen in LA near the MF. Just chillin… :p I remember around halloween this past year i was chatting to her, and I told her something like pretty please make some cute butterfly crystal looking weapons to go with my fab butterfly wings, and presto not even a few weeks later they were there in the BlackLions Specialist Weapons and I was so thrilled to see them in display I was like yaaaaiiii Gaile listened to me :p (that or they had already had an idea such as the one i gave her…) still that was the best day ever

Oh gosh, while I would love to be the "ask and ye shall receive* Wonder Woman™, the fact is, those were in the works, I’m sure, because things like that take quite a bit of time to create, including art, animation, sometimes sound, programming, etc.

So thanks for the nod, but I must humbly decline to take credit here.

Yes, that’s what I did. You can save in storage, put on an extra character, etc. I save mine from year to year.

Gaile, I think you should suggest to the team that we need a “purging” event (for good rewards and trade ins)… There are lots and lots and lots of things clogging up the BLTC..

Interesting idea! I had a Monty Python and the Holy Grail flash: Instead of “Bring out your dead” we have “Bring out your dead/useless/valueless items.”

YES! That would be so awesome!

Btw , we know you are THE mastermind behind all operations, so make them make it so!

This issue is a non-issue. The notes clearly state:

Shared Inventory Slots are now available starting at 700 gems each in the Upgrade category of the Gem Store. These slots will allow an item placed in them to be accessible by any character on the account. These slots will appear at the top of your inventory once purchased. Each account can have up to 5 Shared Inventory Slots at this time.

At no time are they called “bags.” Calling this a “scam” is offensive and inaccurate.

We’ve coalescing feedback, comments, and questions about the new Shared Inventory Slots, as released in today’s game update. This will allow the team to better review your input and to answer questions, as well.

Apologies if the merging causes some comment reordering, but this really is more helpful and efficient than having multiple, concurrent discussions on the same topic. For instance, a few threads ask about gem refunds related to in-game items that were purchased for individual accounts and which now can be shared. With this thread, we all can view dev and player comments about the situation.

Hello,

I think I need to clarify something about the forum specialists: It’s perfectly fine for our forum specialists to share what they are sending to the team and to actively gather specific or general input from forum members in advance of creating their reports. This has happened in the past and there’s no NDA or any policy that prevents them from giving an update, even posting their entire report. After all, we choose the specialists because of their areas of expertise and we trust their judgment.

The only downside that I can see is if a specialist were to post and then someone developed a “timer” mentality about the content, such as, “Hey, the FS told you about this XX time ago, and you haven’t done anything!”

The reports are great, and the teams appreciate the input. The input is your input, and it has been acted upon many times. I think that there’s proof of the value of your input even today with the PvP thread that went up this morning. However, like all input, the suggestions, reports, and feedback we receive must be prioritized by the dev team.

The fact that an issue exists or that it has been highlighted to the team — even the fact that XX percentage of players feel YY is the most important need of the day — does not necessarily mean that it will be or even can be set as the highest priority by the development team.

As far as flagging FSP member posts, that’s not technologically possible. You are free to visit the profile page of any FSP member (click their name in any thread and you’ll end up on a page like this one). At that time, the first option is to view see all posts by that forum specialist and clicking that line should aid you in seeing posts.

Since this was about CDI’s and the topic seems to have shifted a few times, and because the original questions were answered, I’m going to close this thread. Thanks for your understanding.

Updates about Wintersday

Here are answers to questions about the Wintersday Festival:

  • Is the entire Wintersday Presence Collection accessible all year, or only the Festive Imbiber?
    • The Winter’s Presence collection will be available all year. Anything in the Collections category will always be available, but certain parts of it may no longer be collectible.
  • Will the candy cane achievement be given similar treatment to Festive Imbiber? It’s not required for the shoulders, but it’s still one that is on a similar progression scale as Festive Imbiber.
    • Candy cane achievement will not stay available. It is not needed for anything else (except the meta). Progress will be saved and will be able to be finished next Wintersday.
  • Will FI and the candy cane achievement progress the Wintersday meta after Jan 12? This is mainly a curiosity thing, am interested to know if the meta achieve will be locked after Jan 12 is over, even though anyone that really wants the meta won’t need it.
    • No, the meta will not be able to be completed after the end of this Wintersday. The purpose of the meta is to reward a title for active participation in the event.
  • Will FI and the candy cane achievement’s progress carry to next Wintersday, similar to the Grawnk ones did from last year?
    • Yes!

I hope that’s helpful info, and here’s a PSA:

Wintersday ends on Tuesday, January 12th.

Upcoming Changes for PvP League Season 2

in PvP

Posted by: Gaile Gray

Previous

Gaile Gray

ArenaNet Communications Manager

Next

A message from the PvP team:

Five weeks ago, we launched the first season of our “PvP League system”, and since then we’ve been talking to many of you in-game and keeping our eyes glued to our forums, reddit, Twitch, and other social platforms in an effort to take in as much of your feedback as possible. Now that we’ve had time to fully digest your thoughts and contextualize it with the heaps of data that we’ve collected, we’d like to kick off the New Year by discussing the changes that will be coming to PvP Leagues for Season 2.

Matchmaking Changes

The matchmaking system in Season 1 uses a blend of both your current division placement in Leagues as well as your individual matchmaking rating (MMR). This means that you’ll generally get paired with and against players in your division that are of similar skill levels. Unfortunately, what this also means is that from day one you’re going to have difficult matches, and because of the way MMR works in Ranked play, you’ll have a very difficult time maintaining enough of a win-streak to progress through tiers and divisions. This is especially true as you climb into divisions such as Ruby where you can lose points as well as tiers. While this system helps ensure that your matches are always as competitive as possible, it does mean that it’s also more difficult to get to the division where you actually belong based on your skill – for example, as a top tier player, the difficulty of your matches in Amber would actually be fairly close to what you’d experience in Ruby and beyond. After analyzing your feedback, we’ve decided to shift toward having your division standing in PvP Leagues be even more reflective of your personal skill level than it currently is.

Beginning with Season 2, matchmaking for Ranked matches will use your placement in your current league division as your primary matchmaking consideration and pair you against players who are placed in the same point range as you, regardless of the skill level (MMR) of the other people in that point range. While we’ll be using divisions to match you against your immediate opponents, we’ll still use your MMR to place you on teams with similarly skilled players (from your division point range) to help ensure that you’re not forced to play with individuals that are of a much higher or lower skill than you. Ultimately, this means that the new matchmaking changes will make PvP Leagues much more reflective of your actual skill, and each division will be progressively more difficult to compete in.

Win Streaks

Since the new matchmaking changes may make matches more volatile at the very beginning of the season (since everyone will be starting in the same division), we’re also planning to introduce a “Win Streak System” into PvP Leagues that will help more skilled players climb through early league divisions and get them into the divisions that they belong. On your third consecutive win (and for every win afterward), you’ll automatically earn extra league points toward your division progress for as long as you can keep the streak going. But keep in mind that a loss while on a win streak will reset your win streak status back to zero, and you’ll need to start another win streak in order to begin gaining extra points again.

Point Confusion: Fixes & Clarifications

If you’re not familiar with the more detailed workings of our match prediction system, then we realize that there’s still some confusion as to why you earned or lost points at the end of a match (for example, “Why did I gain 1 pip for having won a close match, but lost no pips in a blowout?”). With Season 2, we’ll be displaying a postmatch breakdown for you at the end of each game, which will include items such as the win probability that our algorithm determined for your team and an explanation of why your points changed the way that they did.

Shopping for Ambers

In addition to the changes above, we’ll also be adjusting the way that parties are scored in our matchmaking algorithm based on the overall division spread of a team’s makeup. It is important to us that anyone can play with their friends regardless of league standing, but in doing so, we also want to ensure that teams aren’t gaining an unfair advantage in match difficulty based on their rosters. An example of this would be two friends: one is in Diamond and the other is in Amber. For Season 2, these two players will still be able to team up and play together, but they’ll be placed into Diamond level matches based on the highest division player in the party. This means that forming a party with players in a higher division than you will always bring you up to their level for matchmaking and prediction, rather than adjust to compensate for party members at lower divisions. This specific change will go into effect in our next scheduled release (prior to the end of season 1).

Wrapping Things Up (For Now)

There are a few other things coming that will impact the next season of PvP Leagues (namely our next balance update) that will be discussed separately – so keep an eye on our forums and on Guildwars2.com for updates.

We’d like to encourage all of you to please keep sharing your constructive thoughts with us so that we can continue to make PvP Leagues (and PvP in general) even better together. From all of us here on the PvP team, we wish you all a happy New Year and we’ll see you in the Mists!

The incident mentioned in the original post has been more than thoroughly discussed in the GW2 Discussion Forum. This topic, and the accusations contained within it, is inappropriate. The basis of the OP is inaccurate. Clearly, we are taking action on those who cheat, bot, and exploit our game. Obviously we are not “covering up” such incidents, or the situation as a whole. Any anecdotal “I saw this” stories should be relayed to Customer Support through a ticket, or sent to Exploits@Arena.Net.

Nuka — first, you should post inquiries of this sort in the Players Helping Players forum, as it’s not really a discussion or GW2. Secondly, please do not “bump” posts.

Thanks.

Nevermore is the sort of weapon that almost requires you to change whatever you have to fit it, not the other way around

I like the way you think.

P.S. I think Nevermore is awesome!

I checked with QA and they still are investigating this issue. It’s difficult to ascertain which elements are causing it to happen, but it’s under research. I’m sorry that we’re unable to give any sort of timeframe for a fix but wanted you to know the status.
