That’s funny because I just looked up how Wow did in the 1st 7 years and it looks like gw2 still sold more than wow did in the same time frame: http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2011/11/seven_years_of_world_of_warcra.php

Gw2 – ~6 months to 3 million (accounts)
Wow – ~8 months to 2 million (subs)

Sure it was a different time, but common, lets not be so pessimistic. Since when did 3 million become a bad number!?

3 million isn’t a bad number. It’s just not as meaningful to sell 3 million in 2013 as it would have been back in 2004.

Sort of like how all these new movies have vastly outsold classic movies from the 90s and 80s, but that’s not really as meaningful in an age where a movie ticket costs 10 times as much as it used to.

The markets then and now are completely different beasts.

Someone hasn’t been reading this thread.

Go do that, then I’ll consider answering your question.

I did, I ignore xfire and other pages that are not 100% accurate. I’d trust a dev over a website and over a player who doesn’t like a game. Saying that because they are having a sale they are doing bad makes no sense, as my previous post mentioned.

-snip-

Yes, and that’s sort of my point.

If they’re having to resort to sales this early, and are being outsold by all three of the formerly named games at their current stages of development (all three had better sales per week on average than GW2 does right now), then the odds are good that they’re not doing very well.

TERA had a sale 20 days after release (May 19th), had another one on May 26th, both at half price and another one in September (at a price of 9.99$!) only 4 months after release.

Erm, the end of April to the beginning of September is most certainly not a four month period.

What a strange thing to make a thread about. My first notion is that the OP is some sort marketing promoter for this person.

I am debating the merits of the OP given the lack of details. Why exactly is this persons violin play so good with GW2? Please elaborate.

I think Mr. John Mayer sounds good while I PvP, but I mostly listen to podcasts while gaming. Makes me feel like I am taking in useful information while still playing.

I’m not a promoter for her or anything either, shes just amazing. I believe she started on the X factor or something like that, not just because of her violin but because she moves and dances while she plays. A lot of her music does go great with GW2 because of the ambience feel, and the flow of music. Since she has so many its easy to listen to them in different areas, its just a little out of the box thinking is all.

For instance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHjpOzsQ9YI
For me this would be pretty nice for Jormag.

My card isn’t a high end, just Nvidia GT 650. I normally have vert sync on which means you won’t see over 30fps anyway. This is in Orr at crowded penitents.

Kit quality: research suggests that more expensive kits are more likely to produce ecto, with the odds being roughly three times the “chance of rarer materials,” e.g. a Master’s Salvage Kit (25% chance of rarer materials) will yield an average of 0.75 ecto/item.

Sounds like its time for your guild to fill in the fun part :P At least that’s what I do. An active guild comes up with things to do in game for prizes, events you can do together. These are the things you do while waiting for expansions and addons etc. Even if there is little or no reward, an active community keeps the game fresh and new. And gives it that lemony fresh smell we love. The more guilds and people who offer events in game the more fun the game becomes. We have a playground of stuff to do, its all right there programmed for us. We just insert ideas and work off whats already done.

Some things the guild I’m in does are jumping puzzles for prizes, map exploring, dungeons, and more. When i had my own Legion in Aion I had events as well like weekly trivia, pvp battles and even game card giveaways. While some of these things are harder to give away than others its just a stepping stone to a functioning cohesive community. One that supports the games and looks outside of the box to take content to the next level. I have an example that I made by myself using my own influence and coin in game as well as buying gems to support it. It was not a guild only event, but events like this can be for anyone. Guild only, server, guesting, everyone, as long as its fun and creative people will enjoy it. Below is just a very small example of whats possible to create:

People qqing about sales…

They had a Sale during Christmas, I checked Google and noticed GW2 was the only company in the world who had sales during this holiday period.

They had a Sale for New years, also checked Google, no one in the world had sales on new years or any “after Christmas sales”.

They had sales this month, I checked Google again, no one in the United States had any refund money this year, so terrible time to have a sale, also there were no refunds this year, anywhere.

So what we can assume from this is Guild Wars 2 and Arenanet are failing because clearly these are not times to have sales. As I’ve checked thoroughly with Google and seen no evidence of any other companies taking advantage of these holiday times to give sales to loyal or prospective customers.

So in anticipation of everyone in forums (since everyone is forums is clearly the only ones who play the game) leaving, I’ve driven as fast as I could to my local gamestop store (where there are no SALES at the moment) and bought all of their Guild Wars 2 cards so that I can play by myself when everyone is gone. I may be the sole survivor of Guild Wars 2, much like will smith in “I am Legend” I will endure on the zombie Apocalypse and support the world all by myself.

/sarcasm

The game has enough bugs and problems to worry about, they don’t need people predicting the end of the game at month 7. If the game developer says player activity is slowly increasing, then most likely they are telling the truth. Simply stating the numbers can cause people to panic for no reason. It’s obvious to most that games have a flow, ups and downs, and after initial release. So stating numbers tells nothing. Do you see regular updates in WoW when a new MMO comes out stating “We lost 3 million people, 1 million came back”? No. That’s just an example. But seriously, if you want to talk about decrease/increase you need to realize some obvious things:

Holidays
School
Work
Season
Peak Times
Servers
Locations Played from
Players playing other MMO’s on the side -Beta testers included for new MMO’s
Console gamers trying the new games that just released, breaking from GW2

And yes.

“Some” people leaving.
“Some” people returning.

There is a lack of common sense in most posts, people with any sense of business know that sales are a common thing, even in brand new companies. Petco opened near me, grand opening sale, as did a furniture store. Again, just an example.

Anyway…

If you find yourself on an empty server, we have guesting. If you enjoy the server you guest on why not join a guild and stay? If you REALLY like it you can get a transfer, and a good guild or friends could contribute to your costs.

If you don’t want to stay, or just want to hop around, find guilds on different servers. Ask them if they have a guest rank, a rank for just people guesting. Once you leave they remove you for space for others to guest and be part of a guild.

Just some ideas. My Apocalypse survival list is included below.

A while ago Jon Peters said something that has been taken out of context. He said that only two people were working on the things he was working on (which was true – but he meant it differently than how it was received) and people have taken that to mean that we only have 2 people working on balance, or PvP, or both (at this point it’s morphed into different things in different threads).

Based on what was said, I understand how it could have been construed, so I wanted to be as transparent as I can be, so that you know what’s happening inside the studio.

PvP
On the PvP team we have programmers, designers, QA and an environment artist (Darrin Claypool – he’s the guy who just finished making Temple of the Silent Storm). Many PvP features need all members of the team, but some are programmer intensive, or art intensive. For example, while we’re still working on custom arenas and other core features (which involve server programmers, UI programmers and gameplay programmers), designers and artists were able to build the recently released “Temple of the Silent Storm”. Because the map required no code, we simply worked with art, design and sound in order to support this map’s needs. Work on custom arenas requires zero environment art, so those two features (custom arenas and a new map) don’t impact one another greatly, as far as work flow goes.

WvW
For WvW, we have a similar setup. We have designers, QA, programmers and environment artists. WvW is a massive piece of the GW2 pie, and the WvW team is able to focus on WvW needs. While many of us in the company may give feedback/ideas/suggestions to the WvW team, they are the ones who actually implement and carry out those changes.

Balance
When it comes to balance, we have multiple people who give feedback/guidance/suggestions, even though a smaller subset actually implement those changes (which is what Jon was saying in his post). After we have balance meetings, a few of the designers implement the changes. If it’s a WvW change, the WvW designer will implement that change. If it’s a PvP change, one of the PvP designers implements it (again, this is what Jon was saying). If it’s strictly a balance change, then we have a designer do it that has the bandwidth (sometimes it’s me, sometime it’s even Izzy, but usually it’s Karl or Peters). Currently, when we have balance meetings, the following people are present in various combinations, depending on the topic:

Jon Peters – game designer
Karl McLain – game designer
Representatives from the WvW team, including QA and design
Representatives from the dungeon teams, including another game designer
Representatives from the live response team, including QA guys who play ALL aspects of the game A LOT
Other representatives from the PvP team, like Tyler Bearce (designer) and Roy Cronacher (QA)
Izzy – lead designer
Myself – game designer
When we’re in those meetings, we’ll talk about hot topics, and issues that are currently a big issue for a certain piece of content. We also listen to high level players, we read the forums (sometimes we even take the best-written posts, print out 10 copies, and bring them to a balance meeting), and we play the game to get a feel for ourselves. Just because you don’t see a change that YOU want, keep in mind that someone else may disagree. Just because we don’t do every single change YOU want, doesn’t mean we don’t care about you or the game. We just try to make the best changes for the greatest number of players.

I just wanted to clear this up to let you guys know a little bit more of what happens here inside the studio so you understand more of what Peters was trying to say. He’s just as busy as we all are, and with a lot of us gone for Thanksgiving (he’s not here right now), I just took it upon myself to try to clear this up a little.

Cheers"

I know how to fix this.

Everyone log out of the forums and go play.

There, problem solved, we just increased the server populations.

In all seriousness, I still say it’s likely there are lots of other factors. That there’s no subscription fee means people can come and go if life interrupts (school, family, work) and not have to push time in. There’s also people who just log in to blow through new content as it’s put out because they don’t have time to do it slowly

Some of my guildies actually have very real time constraints on their computers. One for instance plays at an internet cafe in Asia, one’s computer is time-controlled by his/her dad, and one often goes “gtg, mom” before immediately logging off. I myself get on usually around after 9 or 10 PM (PST), and unless I’m running dungeons or Fractals with my guild, or am otherwise occupied by something (like a new event), I get off around 12 AM. What? I can’t stay up the way I used to be able to. =_=

As for getting off the forums to play, one interesting thing I’ve noticed (anecdotal, I know) is that of the people I’ve met and talked to in-game, not that many visit the forums (or know/care about them).

I love how people think that a discount means a company isn’t doing well. That’s like saying black Friday is when prices go up.. Did anyone think that perhaps there is a discount to help bring in more people who shy away from the price tag? Not everyone can afford the $60, but they have discounts to give you a good deal and add more people who may have been waiting for a price drop. This does not mean they are doing poorly. Walmart has discounts everyday, and yet they are the largest store in the world. But clearly they aren’t doing well because they sell at the lowest price.. Discounts on gem items make it so people without cash can use cash to gems to get stuff. Discounts on site allows people with cash to get discounts directly with cash. I really don’t see how people bypass this obvious business tactic to simply continue an ongoing game.

People come on here to complain and tell everyone that they don’t play anymore. That’s neither constructive or helpful. If you don’t play then find another game. For those of us who understand how discounts and economies work we will be here enjoying the game and ignoring the anti-gw2 people just spouting nonsense on these forums. Truly I think far too many people spend more hours on forums than game, maybe that’s the real problem.

No one accounts for school, work, vacations, holidays, the amount of misinformation is astonishing. Wikipedia is probably more accurate than 99% of the posts on these forums.

What makes a dye uncommon/rare?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Geotherma.2395

Geotherma.2395

Were these arbitrarily chosen by the devs?

Yes. Basic colors (that everyone would actually want) like white and black are rare., yet all manner of other colors can be found in the common category.

C’mon now. White and black are rare colors? Since when have those ever been rare for anything? I can walk to the nearest intersection and, in the span of 5 minutes, see more white and black cars than I count. They’re rare in GW2 for essentially no other reason than to make players pay for them in one form or another,

White and Black dyes in Aion were also very rare/expensive. Must be an mmo thing heh

Botters are paying customers like everyone else. Actually they’re better, they tend to buy more accounts. Explains why they wait so long to ban, they need to make sure the botters profit before banning them and repeating the cycle.

Botters are not ALWAYS paying accounts, they can be RMT accounts as well and hacked/stolen accounts. I smell conspiracy theory anytime someone says X company is letting bots play because it is money. When in fact, even if they did buy the game, they already got there 60 bucks and can ban them right away. So its a win on both sides.

Quote: “If a guild leader is inactive for 60 days (2 months) from the last login, as shown in Guild window, they will automatically be demoted to officer, and the most senior officer who was active in the past 60 days will be instantly promoted to leader. If there is no active officer in the guild, the most senior member who was active in the past 60 days will be promoted instead”.

So it’s good to know that there is a system in place. However a couple of questions remain.

Where does it show the last login?
Why was an inactive member promoted in the first place? (might be a different system or the member indeed logged in at some point when no one else was on or no one saw him?)
When does the counter start when an automatic promotion takes place?

Perhaps they did double check it and perhaps this officer indeed logged in in the past 60 days.

Suggestion – have the system allow the leader to name a successor manually.

There isn’t a last log in as far as I know.

There is a warning in the panel to change titles that says " To change a member’s rank, open the guild roster, and right-click their rank icon. Use caution when editing ranks or promoting people; it is possible to accidentally remove leadership privileges from your rank." http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Guild There isn’t a popup, and I agree it would be a good idea. Exotic drops

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Geotherma.2395

I’ve had 1 exotic drop. One.

I do 6 dragons a day. CoF with my guild every day, several times.

I just play the game. I never get exotics. If I remember right too, that exotic was on the TP for 78s. I salvaged it for an ancient wood and sigil of air.

As much as I like this game, the loot situation makes it so I don’t even want to play. Can’t get stuff to craft rare earrings. Can’t get ingredients to craft food/dyes. Can’t get anything.

I’m a cook and get all my mats for it very easily, most the high level mats aren’t even in in high level areas. Save for 1 ingredient in some. Also depends on what you do with your time, as for the salvaging I only use Black Lion salvage kits for exotics/rares. In the event that I don’t have one, which is unlikely, I would use a master salvage kit or simply sell the exotic since I have never seen an exotic (armor/weapon Level 80) for less than 1 g. Mainly because people would buy those super quick to salvage.

Exotic drops

Geotherma.2395

I posted a pic on the perceived loot thread, I spent around 3-4 hours in Orr last night. I added the few runs with 230MF and put them side by side with the 30MF pics I took. Obviously more research is needed, which I’m working on, but for now I definitely noticed a difference. I’m working on something more detailed but its not ready yet.

*Edit. I edited the pic a bit to be more clear, the colors were a little hard to see. Uploaded new one.

About exotics, I usually see them maybe once a week. However, I see them more commonly from chests and champion mobs than i ever do from PVE regular mobs. But I believe this is how it was stated somewhere to be true anyway. I don’t do dungeons and I often ignore the dragons, but I may try to do a series of runs to see those drops someday.

i also wonder, why should i need it at level 80? the world is full of skill points and i get levels fast enough to earn a great amount of them without a way to spend them…

Exactly, it seems like this works best if your fully traited or killing mass amounts of mobs. But some classes like my Thief who is 64 can’t kill mobs fast enough or find enough to make this worth it.

And what about low levels like 20-50, I don’t see a thief or some other classes in full blues/greens having the ability to make use of these at all.

I was wondering why the xp amulets are different in GW2 than other MMO’s I’ve played. My 80 can kill mobs fast enough to make them useful, but as far as the spread out mobs for something my thief can kill these amulets don’t do much. If you can’t kill fast these really feel worthless unless I’m missing something. I’d prefer buying these or using these if they added a % on ANY xp earned like events, explore etc. Is there a reason they are kill only?

And before I get flamed for people thinking I want to speed level, truly I don’t :P I got to 80 in bout a week without these. I’m just curious the method behind making them Kill XP only.

I see a serious problem with understanding context in forums. 1 key would not open every chest.,.. 20 chests would give you 1 key from the Mystic Forge OR 3 chests and 1 laurel would give you 1 key. That one key either way would not open every chest, it would be no different than the keys in game now. How people interpreted that the key would open every chest is beyond me… The numbers are arbitrary and only for example.

Who in their right mind would spend gold on a set of exotics now? Yeah it was easy – because we weren’t garbage collectors before the november update that made all loot trash. I also bought my first exotic set quite quickly, but doing the pve, actually doing dungeons, takes a billion times longer than in WoW.

Be my guest if you wanna buy ecto’s into todays market… If you can afford multiple full exotic sets you are either a lucky dungeon exploiter from early on, no lifer, or TP exploiter. Me personally I like to play the actual game without being poor constantly, and that means grinding dungeons forever in GW2.

So I need to reroll an alt and do map completion to make enough gold to buy more sets? Lol what? I only play one character I shouldn’t be forced to do that.

Grinding Orr for 1 hr, 2-4 G/hr. Not seeing an actual grind here. low levels make less money.

2.4G? I barly get 1.5 at times. Gues RNG likes you.

But you realize doing Orr over and over and over and forever over again is grind right?

Self inflicted grind ^^; But I enjoy grind. Each event brings me about 1g give or take 10s. Then gathering, mixed mobs and the mobs that come between events bring in 2-3. Really depends how much I’m paying attention. 2g being my average, if I’m not afking for RL and have a good day I’ll easily make enough in a week to blow 50g+ on whatever I want lol I’ve went from Dyes to salvaging rares, to making 800 omnomberry bars and sending them to friends. Whatever keeps me busy and interested. The benefit of people like me who enjoy grinding in a non grind game is that we are usually very giving and care about the social side of the game. See my Vday event I hosted on NSP, that was around 70g.

Aside from my personal enjoyment of grinding, those who do dungeons and events are just as likely to make the same or more. Assuming they do fix the tagging problem some are having, and better the rewards of these harder creatures. I enjoy grinding even if its the same area, its for personal reasons but it gives me something steady to do to keep my mind clear. Monotonous as it may seem to many, it’s how i enjoy my $60 purchase at the moment

On a side note I would be playing my Pre-ordered Crysis 3 and Pre-ordered Metal gear but my son used the lens mechanism like a ping pong machine, and there it sits at Sony being fixed..

How is it ‘self inflicted’ grind. Tell me then if I want gold what else can I do? CoF? Well with my mf gear most of the time it is ether equal to or beat cof. So no its not self inflicted people just have to grind there.

12 minutes in orr nets me 4+ Gold from events. The events that pop up around those two WP’s give me nice karma/xp, not that i need at 80..

There is no grind, you can do dungeons for fun get the blues and greens maybe yellows. At any time you can keep watch in guild chat for dragons and maw, this is not grind these are brainless simple free chests.

When not doing that you can gather, craft, and do plenty of other things. I say self inflicted because I MYSELF, grind for fun. It’s not because I have to its because I want to and enjoy just grinding certain events. On an average day in 2 hours I can make 4g + from events alone, hit up possibly 1 dragon, do 1-2 Maw events, finish my daily, and spend 10 minutes on my alts gathering mats for high level cooking. Maybe not everyone is this productive, but again its how I play. And to reiterate, self inflicted meant I do it of my own free will and am not forced in any way to EVER grind in this game for anything I want. I’m sitting on 50g in my bank that I made between dinner last night and lunch today. Most of which i will probably use to help my guild and make food, or maybe just throw it all on dyes for fun. And I’ll probably do the same tomorrow.

As for gear I’m wearing full Knights set, 0 MF on any piece of gear. I simply use food and guild buff. The game is not as serious as people make it out to be.

Last week I got an Abyss Dye from a BL Chest.

I also vaguely recall reading that the Mystic Forge Conduits had a miniscule chance to drop in the chests after the “market stabilisation event” ended and you couldn’t make them anymore. I have no idea if this is true or not, but if it is they are worth 70g right now and rising (and I sold my spare for 15g during the event )

Also, Chests already have a chance to drop Keys. It’s at a high enough rate that buying 5 BL Keys from the Gem Store has about a 50/50 chance of giving you at least one key. Back in October I bought 5 keys and opened 13 chests (only bought keys once since then because I was playing Skyrim most of the time).

This happens to me a lot too. The best one so far was I bought 20 keys, 6 dropped, then 3 more, then 1 lol. I was like well thank you :P

Nah, there is no way I’d ever care enough about black lion chests to open them in mass.

I destroy them in my inventory when I get them these days. Not worth selling on the TP.

If I ever get a key, I just grab one of the hundreds of chests I have in my bank. If I’m feeling real lazy, I’ll buy one for a few copper off the TP.

No fix to keys will make your Black Lion Chest investment worth it. There are just too many chests compared to how many keys are bought/found, and impossible to manipulate due to the sheer volume of chests.

PS: Why you’re bothering to sell Black Lion Chests when they’re worth 20% of one copper ore is beyond me. It’s as bad a decision as speculating in cinnamon.

Why not sell them? Just because they are worth less doesn’t mean you shouldn’t sell them. It makes no sense to not make profit of some sort off of something and toss it.

Or even have an NPC during events that you could trade X number of chests to for a key. This would keep the keys from piling up too fast all year round for peoples accounts. If people had a reason to use them they wouldn’t be so stagnant and take up space in peoples banks or the TP.

If you were guaranteed a key from the chest, buying one key would open all 1 million chests on the TP…..I can only imagine that’s not what you meant…

No.. I meant that there wouldn’t be 1million chests sitting on the TP doing nothing.
And you would only get 1 key from 20 chests, or 1 key from 1 laurel and 3 chests. Or something to that affect that would be fair overall.

No.. I meant that there wouldn’t be 1million chests sitting on the TP doing nothing.
And you would only get 1 key from 20 chests, or 1 key from 1 laurel and 3 chests. Or something to that affect that would be fair overall. With the laurel idea they could also lower price of keys, so those who don’t want to spend laurels could buy the keys with gems or through transfer gold-gems and get the keys. The second idea would probably be better to avoid making the Gem bought keys completely useless. But it could be 2 laurels or 5, or it could be 50 chests, they aren’t set numbers just the base idea I was trying to get acrossed.

There was a guarantee to get a Black Lion Key from them?

If you could actually use them to create a key through various means would you be interested in using them?

Some ideas: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Black-Lion-Chest-Key-Improvement/first#post1478367

This would put an end to the millions of chests on the TP and finally make the chests an interesting part of the game rather than something that sits dormant on the TP for ages.

It could possibly help the economy, help enjoy the game more, and allow players in game to enjoy the boxes without being forced to purchase keys since the drop rate is so very low. And if you don’t want to use them or open the price change on TP could help you make some coin off those ones you don’t want.

So would you use them? Why or why not? And are the ideas something that you would want to see in a future update? Why or why not?

Black Lion Chest/Key Improvement

I was fiddling around with a few ideas and figured I would share. I haven’t spent long analyzing all the drawbacks etc so hear me out :P

As many of you know BL chests drop pretty frequently for most. But the keys not so much. I think one way to improve this would be to make it so that the Mystic Forge rewarded you a key for X amount of boxes. I don’t know the best ratio but lets say you have 20 Black Lion Chests, which are going for around 3c on TP right now. You take 20, 5 of each, and put into the Mystic Forge. You get rewarded 1 key for the deposit. This allows you to go use it on another chest. Another benefit of this is the economic part, with this idea the chests would possibly go up in price a little. Maybe, say, 10c each? So if you don’t all those chests you can simply make a decent game coin off them. I’ve included a pic below for people to see.

My second idea is sort of similar but differs in 2 ways. instead of 20 (or X amount) boxes it would only be 3. You head to the laurel vendor and for 1 laurel you buy an item to combine with the 3 boxes. You toss in the Mystic Forge the 3 chests and the 1 laurel item you bought. And boom a key Since people won’t have tons of laurels it won’t hurt the gem store too much and will help the economy for people selling boxes.

With either of these ideas Anet could add more items to drop from these boxes, making them more wanted and interesting. Perhaps even adding event items to them during game events during things like Halloween, Christmas(Winter season), etc.

Well that’s my idea for the boxes, let me know what you think. I look forward to the constructive replies.

Do you like one or the other? Both or neither? And why? Thanks for your input.
