Why Low level gear worth so much?

Especially for the cloth armors, lots of level 80s get those to salvage for mats for tailor. There’s no way to get cloth except by salvaging, and level 80s get drops for their level regardless of the zone now. I think the same thing applies for leather also.

that only happens for stuff like weapons and armours, crafting mats and bags and salvage items still drop at mob level, so can still get cloth and leather like that

Technically, yes. On the other hand, as a level 80 who’s stuck at lvl 150 tailor, relying on bag and salvage drops is much, much slower than having the level-appropriate armor and weapon drops.

I find it’s worth it, but you have to do a cost-benefit analysis. Lots of people pay a ton of money for the top MF food, but you have to make a lot more in drops just to pay for that food let alone make extra money. I’ve had good luck sticking with cheaper MF food that I can get 30 of for the cost of a single omnom bar. That’s really what you want, because MF doesn’t get rid of RNG it just makes it a tiny smidge less irritating. With any RNG, you want to have the largest number of dice rolls.

Mostly, what it seems to do is give me a bit more loot. I don’t necessarily get higher quality loot, but I seem to get more salvage items, blues, etc. That adds up, but not to the point where I want to go full out on an expensive MF set + food.

The expectation that all content should be easily playable by all players is a bit unreasonable. There do need to be some challenges. And those players that do play the more difficult challenges (like if a Hard Mode was added) should be adequately rewarded for their efforts.

Why is it unreasonable? We’ve all paid for the game. Challenge isn’t the same thing as content gating.

That said, I don’t think the WP change is necessarily bad. It needs to be finetuned naturally, but that’s not a surprise to anyone. Nothing is perfect on the first try.

If you’re parking characters in the same zone for more than one session (i.e., hitting the login / logout button, like your avoiding-afk-death routine), then yeah, we’re describing the same thing. I find that if I start from LA, hit a bunch of zones and end in LA I don’t hit DR. I also usually cycle through WvW and do an event or JP. It’s only when I log out in a zone and then later log back into the same zone that the DR starts hitting super early. It’s really inconvenient for exploring in zones that aren’t near a big city.

How on earth is having tokens and jugs account-bound alt unfriendly? That has got to be the weirdest definition ever. Seriously, your proposal here is the alt-unfriendly proposal. It will mean that fewer people have alts since they have to repeat everything for each alt and can’t share the advantages of a higher-level character with their alts.

Having an alt always takes extra time. That’s part of the tradeoff of alts.

I did this to power level my Thief (and now my Mesmer). I don’t log off @ 60% though. I log off @ 10-20% (depends on how fast the boss is dying) and I don’t leave the group hanging before I do it.

I’ve done it maybe 20 times so far? Haven’t had a complaint yet. I’ve seen other people do it, but all of them log off when the boss is @ 80%! That’s being a kitten.

If you aren’t doing it, you should! I do all of AC, COF, TA, and some times other dungeons and can get 8-10 levels in a few hours on top of tokens that I can throw at my alt as soon as I hit 80 and then do class quests.

So TLDR; you do 95% of the dungeon on your main and log off before the boss dies. I don’t see anything wrong with it!

So long as you make sure the party’s OK with it, sure. Because the higher-level party members are carrying your lowbie alt, since it’s not going to contribute much to the fight. If you’re doing this without telling the party I think that’s a problem, and I would vote to kick if I noticed somebody doing that without asking.

DR? (Diminished Returns)

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Gilosean.3805

Gilosean.3805

Yeah, at the moment DR is an actual worry for players and not a problem for bots. If you don’t want to strip it out OK (and I think you’re very wrong), but you need to fix it so it stops catching actual players after half an hour of running around in the same area.

We don’t need a system that impacts earnings over time. Botters don’t care, they’ll get more accounts. DR doesn’t actually hit their business model except in a very small way. Players are the ones with limited time, so they are most impacted by DR. We do need a system geared more towards catching actual hacking behavior, like teleporting directly between resource nodes. I mean, you can get a list of accounts to watch even just using a list of who harvested what node when.

We’ve seen over and over again that there are problems with the loot system. The dragon chests issue, the huge threads complaining about weird patterns in loot drops, and how the new loot chests will drop with junk or nothing when they’re only supposed to drop with blues and up, etc. We don’t need DR messing up these underlying system when the systems themselves are obviously so complex that the devs aren’t keeping on top of them.

It’s entirely possible that the DR system hitting parked event characters wasn’t intended, but was a result of us fixing an exploit or other problem within the system, and it just happened to slip by us in testing.

For now DR is hitting parked characters who you don’t do anything else with but that specific thing. To avoid being hit by this, whether it is intentional functionality or a bug, do some other stuff on that character.

1 point to look into – Something I’ve noticed personally and when talking with players is that people who log in and log out in the same area get hit with DR quicker than people who log out in a different area. Example:

I started exploring Straits of Devastation. I spent about 4 days there. Day 1, I logged in in LA, traveled to the Straits and grabbed a few WP. Day 2, I logged in in LA, WP’d to Straits and started exploring. Days 3 and 4 I logged in and logged out in Straits. On those days (3 and 4) I started getting Porous Bones very frequently, where the first day I hadn’t gotten any and the 2nd I think I got 3. Drops were also less frequent, it was common for me to kill something and not get anything. I grabbed about a 3rd of the area each day on days 2, 3, and 4, and did most of the daily there too, so I was doing the same number of events and making roughly the same number of kills. So it seems obvious that I hit DR, and the only different thing I can point to is that I logged in and out of the same area.

MF is sad, I agree. Have you tried throwing in dungeon exotics? You get them slower, but it doesn’t cost you gold. So you can save up gold, and try the MF, so you work on 2 ways to get it instead of one. Also, exotics have a higher chance to get it than rares.

Honestly, I think the real problem with the EB JP is the dark room + barrel trap (aka arena room). The dark room breaks your stealth if you have a torch, and then empties into a room that’s incredibly easy to turn into a death trap. ANet needs to fix the torches breaking stealth to even it up a bit. I have idea why they decided that stealth is effective except at the most vulnerable point of the JP.

I’ve had 3 experiences with adding a PUG to a guild dungeon run to make up numbers. One quit randomly right before the final boss because we were going too slow. One went afk 2 minutes after we entered the run because he ‘had to go eat dinner’. One was fine.

At this point, I don’t want to run dungeon groups with people I don’t know. Because of my bad experiences. This isn’t prejudice, this is post-judice.

And yeah, there was a definite spike in the elite-only LFG posts and the forum elitism after the FotM patch.

Mounts? What on earth?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Gilosean.3805

It’s about the basic dynamics of movement and traveling in GW. Right now GW2 forces you to either move slowly, or teleport quickly. The former is annoying, and the latter takes the joy out of traveling. Why would I explore the world if I can simply discover the waypoints and then instatravel between them? In a way, I want to be forced to explore the world, instead of doing it just once with the current system, and then simply porting between waypoints

Either you like exploring, or you don’t. If you don’t like exploring and have to be forced, why are you fussed about the waypoints? If you do like exploring, why don’t you do it? It honestly does not take that much time to get places. It’s like <5 minutes from one end of an area to the opposite end for me, if I just start running. If you really need to go faster, there’s food with speedboosts, and most classes have them also. Just look up permaswiftness for your class and shoot across the landscape like a rocket.

On-topic: No mounts please. We really don’t need them, they clutter up the landscape and can be used to block NPCs, etc. Let’s keep the lore and anti-griefing parts of the game intact. Maybe, way down the road, rideable dolyaks are a fun idea. But don’t give them a mechanical benefit (NO speed boost!) so that we don’t suddenly have everyone, everywhere riding on dolyaks all the time.

Why Represent another Guild Causes Rage?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gilosean.3805

Gilosean.3805

There are multi-guild guilds and guilds who don’t allow for guild hopping reasons:

Community: Maintaining a solid active community within guild wars 2 requires, you can guess activity. If people represent other guilds then they aren’t contributing to solidifying the guilds community.

Influence: For the guild to provide guild bonuses they require influence which is only gained from members that represent.

Loyalty: It’s an extension of community, but it’s still very important. Why be in a guild if you don’t want to spend all your time with them? As a guild leader I’m loyal to my members, dedicated. I expect everyone to be the same at least somewhat. It makes for a stronger community. Why should I be the only one to dedicate all my time to work hard for the guild if my members just take advantage of the ‘perks’ yet not contribute accordingly?

There’s plenty of guilds who allow guild hopping. If that’s what you want you can seek those out but don’t start raging at guild leaders trying to keep their guild strong if you do not understand their position.

Guilds and it members share responsibility for the guild, if you just want to do whatever you want to do with whomever you want to do it with then that’s your prerogative but guilds aren’t all about ‘you’ it’s about ‘us’

Edit: At least guilds focused on social communities, not specialized guilds which the guild hopping system is designed for.

Most of the 100% rep requirements are guild leaders taking the lazy way out instead of making the guild attractive for players. You know how you get people to rep a lot? Give them a good reason. Guild boosts, fun conversation, events, etc. Let’s take a look at your 3 points.

Community – If the guild leader isn’t doing events, etc, to get people to rep regularly, I don’t think they actually care about the guild community that much. Also, if the leader is harassing a member about not-repping every single day, they probably aren’t a very nice person to be in a guild with.

Influence – Ditto for guild buffs.

Loyalty – Uh, I love my family and am definitely loyal to them, but I don’t spend 100% of my time attached at the hip. Are you trying to tell me that a leisure activity should be more demanding than my family? lol, be serious.

You’re the leader, you’ve decided to run this guild as part of your leisure activity. No other player is or should be as dedicated as you are. If they do start doing as much as you to organize, etc, than they’re taking over your job.

I think a big part of the OP’s problem is that the guild leads changed the rules on him after he was already in the guild, and from his posts it doesn’t look like the leaders took the steps to make repping the guild appealing, they just harassed him until he quit. Now those leaders have lost a decent player who met their requirements until they changed the rules. That’s a loss for the guilds. He’s free to find another guild, hopefully one not run by wanna-be dictators.

TLDR: The multi-guild system shows rude and bad guild leaders as the liability they are. I’m all for that. It’s not fun for the people who get caught in the middle though. I hope the OP finds another, better guild.

Final Rest - Current Theories

So please Anet give us some more info.

No no no. This is the stuff guilds, and communities build themselves on. Secrets, discovery, experimentation. You young’ins may not recall, but the popularity of Mortal Kombat was largely built on top of kids trading info on the latest Fatalities, or hidden fighters. Earlier Final Fantasy games had a special mystique because there were hidden weapons, summons, or party members that could be completely missed and word of mouth or vague hints in magazines were your only real clues.

1) No, this is the cause of frustration, aggravation and probably pointless grinding. I don’t pay for and play a game to be aggravated and frustrated.
2) Yeah, games have taken a huge leap forward in useability, accessibility and fun since the early decades. I’m all for that, frankly. If you want to play the old-school games, GOG.com has you covered. I’ll take modern games with (generally) decent UIs, clearer tutorials, more interesting and varied gameplay, etc.

At this pont, every other named exotic has dropped many times. Even precursors have dropped. Is this staff supposed to be rarer than precursors? I don’t think so. So either the boss that drops it is so obscure that no one can find it, or so worthless that no one does it. Either way, we need something more. I’d be fine with an in-game update to NPC chatter, frankly, so long as it was over a wide enough area and repeated often enough for people to find it.

Wrong. Devs have stated that we should report people under Scamming for doing this. Asking for strong controls on voting is fine, but these reports aren’t frivolous and people do get punished for this.

I wonder if the devs added chests to help them debug the loot issues people are having. If the chests are supposed to only drop green and above but aren’t, then it’s a pretty clear indicator the loot code is bugged in live even if their simulations look fine. I think what we’re seeing here is just the confirmation that GW2 loot code is problematic.

  • The Flame and Frost story content progresses over time. You will not see everything today, tomorrow, or even the next day.

I haven’t seen anything beyond a Herald and a Refugee Coordinator. Is that it, for now?

Nope. Head to Wayfarer Hills or Diesssa Plateau, and help the refugees you find there. Give mementos from dead refugees to the memento collectors, /kneel or /bow to heal wounded refugees, light fires and fix signs. All this gives you points in the achievement. After you get the achievement, you get karma.

EDIT: Mechanics also need to be part of an official announcement. This is a game, people don’t know how it is supposed to work, and ANet has clearly shown that they’ll ban players for their own mistakes. So naturally people are a bit wary of leaving whatever game modes they know are safe and doing something a bit different.

Thanks for the feedback on the Living Story portion of Flame and Frost: Prelude. Here’s some context on how it works:

  • The Flame and Frost story content progresses over time. You will not see everything today, tomorrow, or even the next day.
  • Expect subtle changes at first. Maybe you’ll encounter some familiar characters. Perhaps you’ll be introduced to some new ones. You might see a new structure where there wasn’t one before.
  • The Living Story content is initially about the thrill of discovery. We’ll put some markers on your map, maybe send you a letter, or parcel out details through certain characters, but the rest is up to you.
  • As the weeks progress, you’ll notice bigger changes in the world. New events may appear. Plots will advance and characters will develop.

As always, we welcome your opinions. This is a new thing we’re trying so we appreciate your patience and input.

That, right there, is what should have been in the in-game mail that (some) people received. You don’t need to tell players everything, but you do need to tell them enough to set expectations.

I can’t count the number of people who didn’t even know the event had started yesterday. You guys have the tools to communicate with all players, but for some reason you just aren’t using them effectively.

They didn’t want people to buy ascended amulets on the first day and be done with the new “content”. Their current design is to make you think you are getting more content by calendar gating you from upgrading your gear (no matter how much you play, you can only get one laurel a day, this puts a hard cap on how long it takes you to get an amulet). Compare FotM rings and their Pristine Relic cost and then look at the Laurel cost of the rings. That’s more than three times as much time to get it, and unlike the Pristine Relics, there is no way to obtain more than on Laurel a day (nor is there a way to get an amulet through other means – I got two fractal rings from the daily in my first five days of farming it).

Earning your gear is too easy for people to work hard and achieve their goal. ArenaNet wants to put more and more content behind RNG barriers or calendar gating, all to make you play longer without giving you more content to do. Had they sold amulets for Pristine Relics, most people wouldn’t buy them with Laurels – the Pristine Relics are much easier to obtain (and plenty of people would buy them at launch).

Yeah, this. It’s really annoying. I’m starting to feel more and more like ANet doesn’t have any respect for players – the players who can’t play for hours at a time, who can’t log in every day, who do log in and do content, then have all these useless things sitting in the bank. The bad communication over Lionguard Lyns is just another example.

There’s a sense of prestige in having Arah gear, if you see someone with a full set you know they did it for the challenge and not so much for the stats. Besides having the skin is good enough, I’ve had people take one look at my character in pugs and have said they were glad to have a good player in the run.

well get me right i dont want alot extra, just 1 more power, 1 more pre and 1% crit or something minor like that would be enough to make it feel like at least you got something even though its minimum its still something for your hard work compared to easy mode.

But you have to grind fotm for better jewelry, so why shouldn’t you be forced to grind the hardest dungeon for the best armour/weapons?

No.

Ascended and FotM was a change from the original game design, which is part of the reason it’s caused so many issues with the rest of the game and with many players. The whole point of GW1 was horizontal progression. People who were skilled got to look awesome, people who weren’t didn’t, but everyone could get the same stats so that no one was left out of a game they paid for. Introducing new gear tiers and starting a gear treadmill threw that out the window, and there are still many GW2 players mad about it today.

If you want to grind for best stats, there are many games that do that. Grinding for best looks is what GW2 does instead, and it works pretty well, just check out all the threads of players trying to make a legendary or get Infinite light.

look at how many people are kitten off about this change then look at your stupid comments. this change will impact this game regardless of what you think. this makes it realy hard to play dungeons anymore. go do ac explore and tell me you can beat kholer without dying and the boss resetting over and over with newbies. then come post here!

What exactly is so bad about Kholer? Literally all of his attacks give you incredibly long time frame to prepare for. He’s just hard if you are one of those people who are smashing their faces into the keyboard during the fight…

newbies dont know the mechs of him therefore alot of them may not want to play dungeons anymore

Then I would say let them quit. Nothing worse than a newbie unwilling to learn and threaten to quit if rewards are not handed over on a silver platter. Either way I have faith that this change will improve the quality of GW2 playerbase over time.

Maybe. Or it might encourage elitism, gear checks and L2Play, which have already started becoming an issue since the Nov 15th patch. Or it might turn away new players from doing the dungeons.

Since dungeons are tied into the perma-BiS gear, I’d much rather see an easy and hard mode, with slightly different drops and same tokens. Then the people who want to brag can brag, and the people who don’t care about that can still get the tokens they need for other parts of the game.

IDK, it may be time to let loose your inner explorer gatherer and run around getting all the mats you can find? That way at least you’ll use up the tools you have so you have room for more.

  • We will develop a separate reward system you’ll see later for other types of achievements, this system hasn’t been finalized, it’s entirely possible this system will not reward the crown currency at all. This system will retroactively reward achievements you’ve already earned (except dailies/monthlies) and may possibly cap out the rewards you can earn from infinitely repeatable achievements, so no one has an unfair advantage.

Hope that helps a bit, more info once we’ve finalized more of the details.

It’s great that achievements will have better rewards, but please don’t add another currency we have to keep track of.

Currently we have:
1) general currency, gold
2) karma
3) Ascalonian Tears
4) Seal of Beetletun
5) Deadly Bloom
6) Manifesto of the Moletariate
7) Flame Legion Charr Carving
8) Symbol of Koda
9) Knowledge Crystal
10) Shard of Zhaitan
11) Fractal relics
12) Pristine fractal relics
13) Badges of Honor
14) Pact Victory Token
15) Captain’s Council Commendation
16) Laurels

Oh, and PvP Glory. I don’t know if it’s an actual item though, any PvPers around to chime in?

That’s nearly a whole bank slot right there, and frequently we need more than 1 stack of tokens for an item. Don’t you think you can have achievements reward better without adding yet more stuff we need to track and store?

Have achievements give tokens for the game mode? I.e., Laurels for PvE, Badges for WvW and Glory for PvP? Have achievements drop some item related to the achivement – loot for monster achieves, crafting mats for explorer or tradesman, cultural pieces for fashion, etc? There’s all kinds of ways to do this without making players work with an 18th form of currency.

Nothing about what they are going to do about the rampant memory hack programs out for gw2.

Wait, that’s news to me. Are you referring to the teleport hack or something else?

So what do I do with these useless Commendations?

Why would you use anything else?

You don’t get better returns with higher kits. The bump in % rare mat chance (whatever that means) doesn’t seem to actually do anything.

Actually that percentage shows the chance of getting higher-tier materials. For instance — you salvage a mithril item, normally you’d get mithril, but if the percentage roll succeeds — you gain orichalcum.

Cost-benefit analysis says the higher tier kits aren’t worth the money. Percentage isn’t high enough to make going from 15 salvages for 32c to 25 salvages for 1s+ worth it. I always just use crude or basic unless I want ectos or the sigil.

New Dailies

I must say the new daily achie is a real disappointment.
Dodge…really? I prefer to die where I stand. Dodging is not my favourite thing to do. I do it sometimes but now I’m forced to get upclose and personal with the mobs just to finish my daily? Revive : another rather stupid choise. I’m a friendly guy. And I’ll help people when I meet them. Preferably before they get killed. But now I must first let them die and then I can rezz them. Hurray!

Dodging is one of the fundamental skills of GW2 combat, and a lot of people don’t know how to do it properly. This is why so many people complain about dungeons, etc. I can see how it’s really irritating for people who play mainly ranged though.

You can rez dead NPCs. They count. Just head to an area with lots of NPCs, there’s bound to be a bunch dead everywhere.

Honestly, not everyone’s going to be able to complete time-limited achieves. The dailies are mostly pretty easy, and there needs to be something to teach people how to fight properly. The forums were getting flooded with CombatSucks!, WhyIDie and L2Play threads.

Make or Break Time? Which Was It?

This patch wasn’t make or break for me. But it wasn’t a bad patch. I think the devs are actually trying to address player concerns, the patch included some things we’ve asked for a lot and some cool new stuff.

Big thumbs up!

I’m happy with the patch overall. Haven’t hit Orr, but I haven’t seen a new thread complaining about the mobs yet so that’s an improvement already.

I like the laurels, although they definitely need to get the rest of the achievements added to that system asap. I like the new dailies – they require more thinking and planning than the old dailies did, and actually reward player skill. They didn’t nerf any classes that I saw, just bugfixes mostly, so that’s a step in the right direction too. I’m a little irritated about the rich ori vein being taken, but that kind of thing happens. Oh well.

All in all 8/10, would download again.

Ah, OK. I salvage for mats – sometimes the mats sell for more than the gear, or I can get more skillpoints out of crafting with the mats. If you don’t salvage than that’s obviously a wash.

It’s irritating that the weapons can’t be forged. I really don’t know what else you could do besides gearing alts or filling your bank with gathering tools. I’m just glad I only had a few commendations left over when they pulled the BLC keys, so I’m not out that much.

I think the old one fits the corrupted theme better. The new one just kind of looks like a wood short bow.

I think the new dailies are fun. Although it was pretty funny when I saw other players didn’t realize NPCs could be rezzed.

You don’t get better returns with higher kits. The bump in % rare mat chance (whatever that means) doesn’t seem to actually do anything. I use crude unless I’m going for ecto or a I need a sigil (mystic/master for ecto, BLK for sigils/runes). I have also gotten ecto and ori with a crude kit. Current theorycrafting on various kits is here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/crafting/Ecto-Salvage-Stats-Spreadsheet/first#post692770

The only thing I can think of is gear up alts if you have any of the right level. You can also get exotics. Or buy the salvage kits.

So.. why do you hate alts?

Gilosean.3805

Yeah, the daily progression is a little slow. On the other hand, it’s not any slower than Mystic Coins. And now we get coins + laurels. Coins will be worthless at some point, but probably they’re a good sell for at least the rest of the year, and you can get neat skins with them.

I think the current laurel prices were set with the whole achievement system in mind, and are high so that people with a ton of achievements can’t buy out everything. We’ll hopefully see the rest of the achievements grant laurels soon and then prices will even out.

Why isnt MF shown in the new stat UI?

Being able to see my MF would be nice. But if other people can see it they’ll start doing elitist gear-check requirements. We already have enough of that.
