We’ve gotten almost an expansion’s worth this year, tbh. New zones, nice story for a game, tons of new skins, upgrades like the wardrobe, the trait rework (which I think is stupid and bad for the game, but it counts) and the NPE. A lot of stuff was added or updated.

ANet’s real problem is that MMO players are trained to expect an expansion. Without that hype, I’m not sure how they’ll draw the players back. Some kind of large LS release with major press releases?

Salvage or Sell? (Newbie Q)

Sell popular rare weapons, the ones that are worth more than an ecto. Also, unless you’re going for the salvage achieves there are several greens that sell above their vendor cost.

I give everything a run through the TP first to see what sells, then salvage the rest.

When I first heard about this, I was pretty upset. But reading the announcement, it seems to be designed pretty fairly.

On the skeevy-moves scale, this ranks below flash sales and singple-player-always-online-DRM. Yes, the just-log-in achieves are a transparent attempt to increase login numbers. It’s sad games do this kind of thing. But if it’s going to be included, ANet is including it right, without wiping your progress.

The big issue I still have is the content-specific nature of the new dailies. I love that the current dailies can be done in basically every map. The drive to force players into specific maps or specific content makes no sense to me. It’s entirely antithetical to GGW2’s play-your-way ethos. I’m extremely unhappy about that aspect of this rewrite.

Game Updates: Traits

Gilosean.3805

I’ve leveled 2 80’s since September (a Guardian and Engineer) and I must admit that the Trait System has had a chilling effect on my enjoyment of the leveling process. I have leveled two 80’s under the pre-April GW2 as well, so I do have a frame of reference.

I expedited leveling as much as possible, using boosts and EotM Trains, Traits unlock were sporadic and random making it difficult at 80 to have a build fleshed out. The SP and gold costs got increasingly more difficult to cover, especially on my second post-patch 80 who needed some build versatility.

Now I have my Elementalist, by far the worst yet to level compared to the others. He is at level 27 at present and it has been a fairly stark experience.

Having leveled an Elementalist at launch (now deleted) to the same level range, I can attest to the fact that the lack of Trait Progression really impacts on enjoying the class.

Level 31 is a long wait, and then only for one Trait!

Ouch. Eles depend so heavily on traits, too.

I never delete any characters, on the basis that I’ll come around to playing that class again some day. This update makes me very glad I don’t delete, because I have 1 of every class made before the patch. I’m not going to make a new character until the trait changes are fixed. I’m kind of sad that I won’t get to go through every racial story, but that’s what YouTube is for I guess.

Don’t join 100% Rep requirement guilds or ‘elite’/hardcore guilds. Those can often be a bit abusive and expect to be front and center during your playtime. Understanding guilds are a good idea, though, and make much of the game more fun.

Operation: Union / Legion of Honor is a casual guild focused on having fun (disclaimer: I’ve been in LoH for a long time). We’ve got a wide range of people and experience levels. Mostly PvE, but people also do WvW groups from time to time. You can post in the forum thread to get added, we also have a guild site:

changing clothing and gear costs money?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gilosean.3805

Gilosean.3805

Putting the mask on is the same as always – Equipment tab in the Hero panel (Have item in inventory → Press H → Click on Equipment → Drag gear to the right slot).

Wardrobe is for skins (the look of an item) only. It’s the replacement for transmutation stones. To add the skin to the wardrobe, right click the item and select ‘Unlock Skin’. This makes the item account bound – you can’t sell it on the TP – and puts the skin in your wardrobe so that you can transmute it to another item later if you want.

Not sure what you mean by ‘some of my older clothing have the same value than my latest gear’. GW2 doesn’t have a gear treadmill, so the gear tiers always stay the same. If you mean, you already have the skin in your wardrobe, that just means that you used a piece of gear with that skin (i.e. looks the same) as the one in your inventory. Many items share the same skins, so that’s not unusual. Skins can’t be unlocked more than once, since they’re just how an item looks.

The gem store sells quite a few skins. You can use the currency exchange to trade in-game gold for gems and get the skins that way, but it’s expensive.

 • Adding Fractals & Dungeons
 • Moving Players Helping Players to Game Discussion

;)

Most of the forum reorgnizations make sense. But BLTC really, really should not be moved to General Discussion. There’s a big gap between people who have fun following the economy and people who don’t. Moving BLTC to General Discussion is like forcing PvP players into PvE to get traits – people wind up needing to deal with things they don’t want in their entertainment, and everyone becomes unhappy. Economy threads will drown in ‘More mounts!’!, ‘Flippers are evilz’ and generally be unproductive. Non-economy threads will have increased competition for space and attention. The whole thing will be a mess.

A merge between BLTC and crafting seems logical. People who craft often follow the economy, even just to manage ingredient costs. Even those just picking a craft ask which is most profitable. But lumping threads examining the cost/benefit of various karma uses with https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/This-Meta-has-to-end seems like simply mashing up forums based on numbers without thinking about how it will impact players.

I wanted a themepark where I could drop in, play with friends, and leave without pressure. If I wanted to have to arrange my life around a game, I’d be playing Pokemon and WoW.

I’m also really attracted by the core features, like shared credit for kills and individual resources nodes, everyone can heal / rez, etc. Those really make the game more cooperative and fun. They’re the reason I’m still around.

3. Missing out on things come to past.

This is where I disagree with them but this is their reasons that I’m listing so I’ll list it. Basically it has to do with the living story, major events, and the rewards that can be obtained at the time. They didn’t like the idea that they “missed out” on these things just because they didn’t play the game at the time.

This is a huge irritant for me too. It’s immersion-breaking. If I was in Tyria, there’s no way I wouldn’t know about the LS events. And I hate that content existed in the game before, and now it’s taken out. It’s one of my huge pet peeves with games. I like exploring and collecting, but when I’m trying to explore a moving target (with content coming and going) or can’t ever finish a set (like minis) I just lose interest.

I understand them wanting to charge for the story, but when the story drives the whole world, that seriously messes with the credibility of the world.

Returning and what's up with traits?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Gilosean.3805

Gilosean.3805

If your character existed before April, you’re in luck – you’ve skipped out on the misery of the new system.

Traits need to be unlocked twice. They need to be paid for, and then you need to put trait points into the trait line to use them.

The April patch made traits massively more expensive, and changed the levels they unlock at. Characters made before then should just have the traits unlocked automatically, ready to be used as soon as points are put into the trait line. Characters made after April need to go around doing bugged events or spending 43 gold plus a ton of skill points to get their traits. It’s massively unfair to new players, and gives veterans a real disincentive to buy new character slots, because their new characters need to go through this asinine new system.

If your characters were all made before the April patch, you can just play and traits will be usable as soon as you have the trait points. New characters will need to pay the ridiculous cost or complete bugged content to unlock them, plus assigning trait points.

As always, the wiki and especially the Discussion pages are a good place to start: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Traits

Gilosean.3805

So my question is really about “did I miss a turn or road somewhere?” Can I “just walk into the next zone” to a different zone and actually continue leveling like my Human and Norn characters did?

Yes.

GW2 is different from WoW this way. There’s no such thing as a ‘right spot’ for leveling or level gates on events- any character can level in any area. In higher level areas players get ‘upscaled’ to the correct level (although they don’t get the necessary traits, so they’re still weak) and in lower areas they get ‘downscaled’. Experiences, events and hearts aren’t limited by your level.

The level markings on the areas are there to let players know how hard an area should be, but if you want to you can stick to the starter zone until level 80, or head straight for Orr. Neither is the most efficient way to play, but they’re both options.

People need to post weather or not they stocked a bunch of leather and gossamer before they make such claim.

I know the only reason I hope leather or gossamer price go up is because I stock up a bunch in the bank…. and it is just collecting dust now.

Of course I have a lot of it on bank. I wont sell anything for less than I feel like it would be worth with appropriate sinks and let speculators fill their guild banks with it and make big bank if a patch comes
I think John Smith is smart enough to check the accounts of people who make these kind of threads without them disclosing their items to the public though. I mean he doesnt hesitate to look up how often someone died when he claimed he never dies

ya I mean, I find it hard to believe anyone cares about the economy or some kitten what the price should be because they are at a higher tier…

People are probably just complaining that their investment don’t turn out big and is collecting dust in the bank.

Few people have the stomach for long-term investments. I like collecting, so a few extra stacks of ingredients sitting around is fine with me.

Leather in particular can only go up from here – it is selling at vendor +1 on the TP. Any logical move ANet makes regarding leather can only raise the price. And since the price is so low, it only has to go up a miniscule amount for the investment to be worth it. It’s the surest bet on the market, just with an indefinite time frame.

Final fights were overtuned and unenjoyable

in Living World

Gilosean.3805

The big fights in the current LS, especially the last update, are boring and frustrating. The boss mechanics are unique and not clearly telegraphed, the NPCs are bugged at best and lying trolls at worst, and every instance I was in left a bad taste in my mouth.

As a non-dungeon PvE player, I thought the story was what I was supposed to be playing. Instead, the designers seem to have gotten confused and tried to make dungeon encounters. As dungeon bosses, these are probably fine. As PvE story instances, they’re terrible and frustrating. Maybe ANet needs to put the designers of the latest LS onto the dungeon team and get people who can design better PvE encounters on board?

The NPCs reliably rezz you in the last fight, too, making it about impossible to wipe.

Not sure what you’re talking about, the rocks hit me and they NPCs did nothing. I had to bandage myself out of the downed state.

I’ve had NPC bugs in many LS instances. There were a few memorable occassions in the latest LS update, where 1+ NPC just stood around for the entire battle.

The NPCs also give really bad directions. Unless you’ve played through that and seen what morons the NPC AI produces it’s very confusing and frustrating. I mean, it’s frustrating after realizing it too, when it’s clear that the NPCs are totally unreliable in this latest season, but at least it doesn’t make the player feel like a failure, it’s just another terrible escort mission.

Earlier seasons did better at not bugging out, I thought, and that makes a big difference.

Actually, crafting is hard to make profitable in GW2, which is why sites like that exist. The easiest way is to do quick dungeon runs or farm the latest LS map – dungeon runs have the highest typical gold/minute with a good group, and the LS map will have the highest concentration of players. Since kill-stealing is impossible in GW2, more players = more events and mobs = more loot.

There are also guides to farming high level maps that can come up with significant gold/hour, which are good fallbacks when LS zones are depopulated.

Gossamer commonly refers to: from wiki….

Fine spider silk used by spiderlings for ballooning or kiting
Gossamer (fabric), very light, sheer, gauze-like fabric

So in theory this should be more expensive than silk.
The problem is here people farm lvl 80 zones and get this stuff (and silk)..

There is no Gossamer sink (yet) – it only takes a tiny upset in the market for things to change demand quickly as the plate base reacts.

I won’t say any more or I’ll be hinting too much at MMO economics – good luck all investors out there !

The currency proliferation is stupid and kind of game-breaking, for me. Why do I have to track all these bajillions of trinkets? Because ANet set up the economy to let some people get super wealthy? So?

If someone out there can buy everything on the map in the first 10 minutes, let them. If ANet doesn’t want that, just drop the rewards from events, etc. Stop with the token BS. It was a terrible idea at the start of the game, and it’s still a terrible idea now.

Use KARMA, for crying out loud, lots of people have so much they buy Orrian boxes to turn it into gold. Rewarding people for spending time doing things in the game (vs. playing the TP) was exactly the reason ANet made karma in the first place. This is literally what karma should be used for, and instead I need to waste inventory space on trinkets because someone at ANet feels like making another currency.

ANet could fix the bugged event chains that are keeping people from getting traits under the new (terrible) trait system, or add more stuff to Wintersday, or work on precursor crafting…or they could add a feature that benefits multiboxers and makes CS’ lives harder. No thanks.

Living World - What Gives?

Gilosean.3805

You’re not the only one who’s finding the difficulty spike very annoying. I think it was caused because a small group of players complained about how ‘easy’ PvE is. Instead of going off to dungeons, fractals, WvW or PvP, they wanted to make PvE harder for the rest of us. I don’t think it was a good decision by ANet.

If this trend continues, I’m probably going to ignore LS updates. Having NPCs bug out and stand there leaving me to fight off hordes of powerful mobs isn’t fun. I’ve had bugs in most LS instances, Fort Salma was very irritating. Why should I spend so much time and effort on things that are broken and not fun?

For the story – ANet storywriting is mediocre. If I’d paid for the LS updates I’d feel ripped off to.

Dry Top is very hard to navigate. The vertical design is interesting the first few times, but it makes getting places hard. The hard mobs mean the exploring is difficult. I can’t take the time to pay attention to the scenery, I always have to be on the lookout for mobs spawning. That’s very frustrating for me, because I think Tyria is beautiful and I want to be able to take time to look at it.

Silverwastes is a bit better to navigate, but it can still be difficult. I hope they make better maps going forward.

I wish ANet wouldn’t keep shoving LS/PS in our faces with the UI – I really like the map completion guide, but I can’t figure out how to have just that and not the achievement tracker and LS tracker.

1. LVL 80 is not good to be the lvl set forever i mean i like if the cap is changed and also after having the same items for 10 years down the road whit no progression is also dumb for me

No. No, it’s not.

Gear grind and constant leveling is not the only, or even best, way to design a game. GW2 was specifically marketed as not doing that, and not having to deal with a gear grind or raised level caps was one of the big reasons behind my purchase. I probably would stop playing if I thought that was going to change, because there are tons of games that will respect my time and effort in a way that gear grinds and raising level caps doesn’t.

OT:
I’ve always been very put off by typical MMO raids, but reading this thread has made me very happy. People see to be thinking carefully about how to do inclusive GW2-style raids where the emphasis is on playing together (vs. grinding for BiS gear or bragging rights). I’ve seen things described here that would make me interested in raiding, like having mini tutorials raids to introduce concepts (can we apply this to starter zones and get a tutorial for combos too?) and having stories built around player choices (like needing to coordinate who dies to hold off the hoards while an escorted NPC gets away, that was a good post).

I would really like to play with a large group of friends or guildmates to go through interesting stories and fun gameplay. I like playing with people, but I really can’t stand group grinds or angry elitists. I think the Labyrinth is a nice starting point for larger group content. It’s dangerous enough to be hard in spots even for large groups, but rewarding both in terms of fun play and drops.

As for raid design, focusing on letting all classes and playstyles shine would be great. In a group of 10+ there’s going to be someone from most classes, so having ways for each class to contribute something extra (not requiring all classes, but letting a diverse group do better) would be a nice way to combat players’ focus on optimal classes. Please, please stop locking drops behind punishing RNG. A token system, even if it was a different system per raid, would be better than rare RNG (although I’d prefer it if the tokens worked across different raids, like guild commendations instead of dungeon tokens).

Also – and I thought this went without saying but the trait system shows that it needs to be said – making players repeat long content is bad. Locking content behind long gold or time gates is bad. Fun comes from lots of sources, but one thing it doesn’t come from is needing an external checklist to get the desired result. Please make sure to communicate in-game the choices players have and the impact of those choices.

We all like to point out problems in the hopes they’ll get fixed. But we can’t just tell ANet where they messed up – we also need to point out what worked really well so we can get more of it!

Here’s what I like so far:
* The Labyrinth is just as fun this year as 2012. It’s dangerous, creepy and highly rewarding if done right.

 • The dialogue between the Mad King and Bloody Prince is still great.
 • Items drop much more often. I feel like I can actually enjoy the event without desperately trying to grind for event items. This is a huge improvement over last year.
 • The new items look interesting.
 • Bringing back merchants from previous updates was a great Quality of Life move!

Where did this Halloween go right for you? What parts would you like to see again next year, or maybe see incorporated into the rest of the game?

Raids don’t work as endgame content because they’re designed to require a lot of investment in the game, so many players can’t participate. This causes frustration and splits the playerbase. We’ve already seen a microcosm of this with elitist dungeon runners and complaints about time-limited content, but that will look like a minor spat compared to what would happen if endgame content gets locked behind large raids. Raids that are inclusive of the player base would be about the same as dungeons, so that players could expect them to form part of typical post-leveling play.

Raids that are exclusive couldn’t be part of the typical endgame – that’s the point of exclusive content. Only a small number of people complete it. Most players won’t even try that kind of content – not to mention many players don’t have large, active guilds or other ways to organize themselves. Difficult raids requiring strategy and planning are the exact opposite of good endgame content.

There’s also a lot of content that could be added or updated which I would find more fun. Raids don’t appeal to me – I’m a working adult with a family. I have a hard time managing to do dungeon runs every few weeks. Content in raids is simply content I would never see. I have to wonder how many players are in my position. It’s probably not a small number.

I would much, much rather have:

 • Content added to the personal story. The early racial stories are interesting – could we get follow ups on that?
 • Active home instances. A menagerie for our minis maybe? Some place to keep in touch with our old friends?
 • More fun minigames
 • Better event bugfixing and ambient voice acting
 • A fixed trait system

Raids can either be endgame content for most players or difficult tactical challenges, but they can’t be both. For me, effort spent on raids is wasted because I simply can’t do it. I know I’m not alone in this. Other kinds of endgame content would be much more interesting.

Combo fields and underwater combat could definitely use a tutorial. I think I was level 40 before I even figured out combos existed, and suddenly playing was much easier. Underwater combat requires a different perspective and it would be good to get a tutorial for new players.

OP, how are you not changing the lore? I’m not sure I understand.

Last I heard: Living and Personal story SPOILERS AHEAD:

I killed Zhaitan and I helped rescue people from Lion’s Arch after it was invaded and destroyed. Then I fought to take back Lion’s Arch, which is still in the process of being rebuilt.

I definitely 100% feel like a part of the story.

I mean I killed Scarlet and was there to watch her drill finish waking up a new Elder Dragon.

How am I not part of the lore?

Because no one else ever mentions it. There’s no impact on world lore from player actions, at least none that players see.

For example, the LS instances don’t recognize players who have completed the PS. That’s a big oversight in terms of lore continuity and player experience. If the PC is a big cheese kittencued Tyria from Zhaitan, that should be noticed and commented on. But no where in the game do players see the impact of their actions.

Check out the Living World forum for more questions about PC impact on lore.

1) Keep the character, you’ll lose access to traits if you delete it. If you have an open character slot making a new character might help, but don’t bother buying a slot if you don’t have one open. Keep all of your old characters so you don’t have to wade through the mess of the new trait system.

2) There are karma weapon merchants in LA or low level zones and I think karma armor merchants around too. Even low level stuff is better than nothing. Also, asking in map chat, friends or guilds is definitely a good idea.

3) Do jumping puzzles in cities (there’s 3 in LA, 2 are fairly accessible) and beginner zones.

4) Gather in low level zones once you can get some gathering tools.

Good luck!

I think all of the classes have options like you’re looking for. Just pick the right weapon.

Profession choice is more about personal playstyle. How active to you want to be? Do you prefer longer-term strategic demands or immediate tactical demands? Do you like flashy effects or just straight-up hitting? Do you like closing in or being far away?

What can I do to improve my self combat wise.

Most non-Defience mobs have a lot of small attacks with small tells and instead of dodging you’re better of dealing with them through Blinds/Weakness and simply killing them quickly, most classes have access to something. Certain attacks (like Ascalonian Catacombs gravelings) have big tells, it tends to mean a big hit or CC is incoming, those you might want to dodge. You’ll take some damage, but aslong as you’re not downed 24/7 it’s not a big deal.

Elementalist: Glyph of Storms in Earth / Lightning Hammer for Blinds, Focus gives a small anti-projectile (Swirling Winds) Reflect (Magnetic Wave) and Immunity (Obsidian Flesh) and for defience mobs; Glyph of Elemental Power in either Earth for perma cripple so you can kite (our ‘max melee’ range is big, even in D/any) or Air for Weakness.)
Mesmers: Not a lot of Blinds, but Blurred Frenzy for Evades and access to Anti-Projectiles/Reflects (Focus Phantasm and Feedback.)
Necromancers: Well of Darkness, Death-shroud Tanking, Traits for Weakness.
Engineer: Smoke Bomb (Bomb Kit,) Flame Turrets activate skill for blinds, some Elixer has a Reflect/Anti-projectile + blind (forgot the name.)
Ranger: Take a pet with Toughness (I’d recommend Drake for survivability vs damage) when solo’ing and send them in first.
Thief: Black Powder (Pistol 5) gives a lot of blinds, Sword Auto-attack inflicts Weakness, also helpful.
Warrior: Healing Signet + High base Toughness should be plenty, if not, check out some defensive Utilities (Endure Pain for example.) Or AoE Stuns (Mace 5 for example.)
Guardian: With the right Traits (Blind on Virtue of Justice, Virtue of Justice Recharges on kill) along with Sword/Greatsword Blinds makes almost any hit miss, along with Aegis (Retreat, Virtue of Courage) and Wall of Reflection for some Reflects, you should be fine.

For every class, you can range and kite almost anything, but that won’t help you improve and is a bit boring in my opinion.

Most mobs with Defiance (Champions, Legendaries) have big tells on their high damage attacks, which is usually all you need to dodge really. They do differ per enemy, but usually it’s either a big movement, some sound or a glowing effect. Even if it’s not obvious at first (like Lupi’s kick is almost impossible to judge from his legs, but you can see it in the way he moves his shoulders) with practice it will become easier. Watching a video on a specific encounter can also help and as last resort you can always ask information on the specific encounter in either the Forums, groups or guild/friends. Attacks with little to no tell generally are counter-able in a different way, be it Condition-Cleanse or Reflects.

The only real exception I can think of is the Champion Icebrood Wolf in CoE, who uses 2 PbAoEs that can easily down anyone in non-defensive gear with just one of them, but they have a long cooldown (~30s) and can be lured out during the pull.

Whilst practicing the encounters it might be worth wearing some more defensive gear, such as Knight’s or Soldier’s and swap in more and more DPS-stats as you’re comfortable with. Downside is that in certain fights that can lead to a lot of aggro and thus making the encounter more difficult, but from what I’m aware only Mai Trin and the Archdiviner would give a lot of issue with that.

For PvP encounters you struggle with I’d recommend to watch some streamers play the class and possibly play it yourself, like that not only the tells become easier, but you’ll often be able to predict when a certain attack is coming and also able to judge what’s worth dodging and what’s better off left alone.

I hope this helps.

How does agro and tanking work in this game?

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Aggro

You can get a mob’s attention by hurting it or by going near (if it’s name is red). But agro isn’t handled the same way as other MMOs at all, and tanking doesn’t exist in the same form because agro is different. Manage mobs with kiting, moving and choosing your ground.

I think your MMO experience may be hurting you here. Some of the mechanics here are simply different enough that the typical MMO roles don’t exist. I found it was especially helpful to pay attention the land around me and practice disengaging from immediate combat for a running battle (condition builds are especially effective this way).

It is annoying. Partying up for a map change is easy though, and with the megaserver you can always find people to play with.

I understand the frustration that may arise in some of these situations. I haven’t yet read a suggestion that I think is a great solution. That being said, I do read the suggestions and am always interested in finding outcomes that make everyone better, so keep them coming!

Upping bids by a small amount isn’t the problem. TP bots are the problem (most complaints are about immediate overbids by 1c, which looks very much like bot behavior). ANet managed to get a good handle on bots in PvE, hopefully they can do the same thing for TP bots.
