You can run a Honor/Valor/Virtues + Shouts build with zerk gear in PvE and do fine. The damage will be decent but not optimal and its very survivable and supporty. Useful especially as you relearn stuff.

On the topic of Adaptive Armor vs Perfectly Weighted, I think adaptive armor is superior. Two guardians in party both with two sources of party stab is plenty. In addition, gaining stab on an evade is a clunky and strange mechanic. Dodges should be saved to avoid incoming damage, not to try and proc stability which we already have. The 500 armor gain from Adaptive armor as well as the condition damage decrease is a HUGE survivability increase, which is what allows the gear selections to be so damage oriented. Dropping that defensive trait for 10% hammer damage is not worth it in the long run.
If you are playing with 2 guards in your party, I see your point. That said, hammer leap is an evade. If you are leaping in with a melee train you are guaranteed to be evading something. This is a really really good trait.

Statue of Melandru (Hero Challenge)
Graven Kay, Cursed Shore (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Statue_of_Melandru_)
The ‘corrupted altar’ bramble effect continues to happen even after the temple of Melandru is cleansed and the statue becomes uncontested. Effect causes bleeding damage, interrupting channel of Hero Point.
The Hero Point is effectively unobtainable.

Traps aren’t bad, and no, wells wouldn’t be better.
Not “bad” per se. Just a niche mechanic that doesn’t fit GW2 gameplay well, which is why Rangers and Thieves rarely use them. It doesn’t matter how much they are buffed either; as long as they operate the way GW2 traps do there will be better choices in 99% of situations.

It might have to do with the fact that GW2 is a PvE flawed game from the get go. People can complain about trinities all they want, but they allow structured fights to take place, and as a result, more unique scenarios for boss encounters can be made from it.
I agree that GW2 PvE thus far has been flawed in design. They tried to take classic PvE content (that relies on trinity mechanics) and use it for a non-trinity system. It’s a bad idea.
I don’t agree that trinities provide more variety. More structure artificially limits encounters. The benefit is that encounters are relatively easy to design because you only have to account for 3 core elements (tank/dps/heal). So there is more ‘variety’ in the sense that there are more trinity based raids out there. The details and situations vary but it all boils down to tank, heal and dps. I don’t call that genuine variety.
GW2 has the potential to do much more, without relying on tired repetitions of the trinity, by giving each class unique mechanics and abilities. Problem is there’s no roadmap for that and it isn’t easy to design.

lol i doubt it. nobody runs healer cuz it’s much better to do something else.

I think it would be nice if this were upgraded a bit. I’d like to see it fear an opponent if the wall is between you and that opponent and taunt them if the opponent is between you and the wall. Fear away those you want to keep away and control those who try to run away from you.
Taunt would make them run through the wall again. Double-dipping. Depending on exactly how this worked they could be perma-taunted for the entire duration of the wall.

So from the recent patch:
Profession Skills
Fixed a bug that prevented minions from quickly targeting your attack target.
I’m pleased that minions are now attacking when I do but… they are also attacking when I don’t. For example: I’m running across the silverwastes trying to quickly reinforce a fort. I do not attack any mobs and I avoid being hit. A minion does get hit, but this (correctly) does not put me in combat. Then the minion starts attacking whatever hit it…. putting me in combat.
That’s new. I used to be able to run across a map with minions out and not get put into combat; now it’s impossible.

That’s not true. We could have tried to drink out of a cup with a leak in the bottom, we could have tied our shoelaces together and gone jogging, we even could have put peas in guacamole. It’s all about perspective.

What about our condition damage? Does it still apply to self-inflicted damaging conditions (torment in this case)?

I played my Revenant with Mace/Axe today, and the problems appeared pretty quick: As soon as you decide to use Mace/Axe, you will never, no matter what Traits or Legendary Stance you use, you will *never have any efficient way to engage in ranged combat
This is a problem. If we kept the current system and added a bunch of optional utilities to the stances (some of which included ranged pulls/gap closers/etc then it could work. But even dagger ele’s ‘melee’ is actually 300+ range. The rev’s melee is really melee.

mace: it’s natural to combo 2 + 3 to blast the fire field but…
- #2 is ground targeted with no ground indicator – it needs one like warrior GS whirlwind, so you can pick where to cast it.
- #3 is enemy targeted – which makes it very difficult to place the blast and gives us no control over placement of additional blasts. Most often they hit nothing. I’d suggest making this ground targeted with a directional indicator like warrior GS whirlwind also.

Balance:
- When a new mechanic or tech is introduced to a game a counter should be introduced as well.
- PvP – does stability keep you from being ported? Does anything?
- PvE – both this skill and the downed state version could be used to bug ‘immobile’ bosses into walls, etc.

So you want to remove immersion?
I don’t have to tap people on the head IRL to talk to them. Prioritizing in-game interactions correctly (or moving some NPCs to prevent undesired interactions due to UI/game design issues) would help immersion, not remove it.

So yeah I still run necro and yea its still one of my favorite classes
and imo the reason people don’t like Necro is because they simply can’t play one lolExactly
Ah, the old “people who disagree with me should L2P” argument. Sloppy thinking.
The fact that necros can be fun and situationally powerful does not alter the fact that the class has serious design flaws.

yea I can see it now… full bank of exo GS’s… dump them all in the forge, don’t get a pre, delete toon start again with full bank of exo GS’s… till you get one. mhmm… not exploitable at all… best fix for this is disable looting and forging for beta.

I’m starting to think….. do our traits/runes/sigils effect the conditions we apply to ourselves?
…
If so…. this is a disaster.
My necromancer is one of my favorite toons…. and it is and always has been 100% playable because it is nowhere near as broken as a class whose claim to fame is a failed execution of manipulating conditions.
In the case of Necromancers, a couple stacks of bleed, vulnerability, or poison applied to yourself for a powerful offensive output is a more than acceptable tradeoff.
If you do play necro that much it’s clearly a power build; otherwise you would have known the answer to your original question. Corruptions don’t hurt as much on a power build but the other poster is correct: running condi gear + corruptions has been near suicidal since the 6/23 patch.
I’m very disappointed to see more of the same with the revenant.

unofficial theme song of the Nightmare Court
I remember I when I made my account it said Your Display name/Account name will be Visible for everyone to read.. it was Loud and Clear, it wasnt knee deep in text, I remember b.c I dont read knee deep text.
I just made a 2nd account and again I remember it somewhere saying this is a public name…..
If you are told its a public name and you chose to ignore that, then that is your fault.
This was not always the case.
We have improved the account creation process to make it clear how display names function, and we even have expanded the User Agreement to accomplish the same objective. If players know that your display name is actually displayed in the game and on the forums, they’ll be less likely to use a name that poses a security risk.
I don’t dislike my name, but if I’d known it was the name by which every player in game would know me I’d have picked something different. And that fact was not made clear in the account creation process back around launch.
unofficial theme song of the Nightmare Court
I’ve never gotten a precursor. You know what I would do if my revenant got one? Laugh. Then shrug and move on. Getting a pre on your rev today doesn’t hurt your chances of getting one on a real character tomorrow. People who can’t handle beta limitations should avoid betas.
unofficial theme song of the Nightmare Court
Wow, I’ve been trying to screenshot that kitten purple cube all night and never got it.
kudos :P
unofficial theme song of the Nightmare Court
Yes you can delete and recreate the revenant. Each new revenant will have new boxes of armor and consumables, just like the first.
However, re-creating the revenant will not take a new snapshot of your bank. So anything you took out of the bank and left in the first revenant’s inventory will not be available to the second revenant (if you don’t move it back).
unofficial theme song of the Nightmare Court
I’m starting to think….. do our traits/runes/sigils effect the conditions we apply to ourselves?
Is boosting your condition duration on revenant essentially destroying its functionality by making your self-applied conditions last longer than your applied resistance…. therefore doing more harm than good?
If so…. this is a disaster.
Welcome to necromancer hell.

The devs did respond to this issue. See the 2nd and 3rd red posts in the following thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Things-we-know/first
Why not. Basically there were two options, both with a large number of edge cases.
1) We wipe your stuff and let you respec as you see fit. Because so much had changed this was our initial plan. Here are problems it ran into.
- People return from a long hiatus and don’t remember what they were running
- People log in and the first thing they have to do before they can play is learn both the new unlocking system and the new build system.
2) We look at what you had equipped and unlock the necessary skills and traits to re-equip you. Here were some discussions points around that:
- We might give you stuff you don’t want
- at least this won’t matter for lvl 80s if we make all the unlocks possible by just reaching lvl 80.
There is a third option which I’m sure you will bring up.
3) let players choose
Here are some reasons we did not go with that:
- Its twice the work
- Its actually more than twice the work because it would have required temporarily saving both options until you choose which is more complex technical work.
- People who were unlikely to understand or want to explore the new system were going to be potentially more confused by the choice.
At the end of the day we wanted to ship this build so we had to decide. Based on instinct we erred on the side of helping people we thought would be more overwhelmed by the opposite choice, and I would make that choice again because it has less edge cases, impacts more expert users, and leans towards over unlocking for free to benefit most of the edge cases anyway.
Hope this info helps you understand our process a bit more.
Thanks,
Jon
And about a hero point refund:
It actually breaks everything. The point of a system with more points that points to spend is to allow players to both eventually unlock everything and to bank for future unlocks. If you take a system like that and allow people to refund in it you break both of these fundamental reasons for the system existing. There are two ways to go with any system that has points spent.
1) Let people continue to earn and continue to progress
2) Limit the amount people can progress or spec and make a refund system. This new system actually contains aspects of both of these. On the side of unlocking we went with a “keep making progress” system where players would eventually get all of the things they want and more, the more they played. We felt like for unlocks this is a better system because it gives people more to unlock and it doesn’t put pressure on a refund system to make the most basic functionality of having stuff work.
On the build side of things (and this is a general principle of GW2) we went with a make choices and refund system. The choices being which skills, specs and traits you select and the respec process being basically free once everything is unlocked.

It was a decision based on practicality, even though, yes, it conveniences a portion of the player base.
But the amount of time and energy it would have cost in programming time to create something that would fix the problem is actually greater than it’s worth to the game over all. There are several reasons for this.
1. Most people don’t give a fig about or notice builds till they’re 80. They just don’t care that much. In fact, many people don’t even pay attention to builds after they’re 80.
2. Most people aren’t going to be affected by this problem. It doesn’t affect new characters. It doesn’t affect low level characters below say level 15. And if you’re up around level 60 or more, you already have most of the traits unlocked by then anyway.
So a few people WILL BE inconvenienced by this, and it’s sad that that’s the case. But it’s not going to change, nor should it.
Pretty much this. Besides, you can level completely traitless to 80 and do fine. Especially now that the stats have been moved from traitlines to baseline + armor.
I can understand the frustration but it was a good decision to make given limited development resources, and the inconvenience is both temporary and slight.
unofficial theme song of the Nightmare Court
(edited by GreyWraith.8394)
It’s not broken.
All the complaints about this got me curious so I play-tested a couple full ascended characters in low & mid level zones… and I don’t see why people are objecting. So it takes maybe an extra hit or three to kill stuff than it did pre-patch? That’s fine, pre-patch was silly with how much damage a down-leveled 80 could do. Seems to be working like it should be.
As for the exact numbers, I don’t care who has slightly more as long as it plays well, and it does. Besides, lowbies don’t have a full trait/skill load-out, so giving them an edge in stats is fair.
unofficial theme song of the Nightmare Court
I’ve always viewed transforms as lazy design. Easier for devs to make since they don’t have to be balanced with innumerable skills/traits… because none of those things work with the transform.
It’s not an accident that players typically avoid using them; we don’t like being locked out of our characters’ abilities. The only ones that see common use are Necro DS & Elite skills… because there are no worthwhile alternatives.
That said, the transforms are typically OP in some aspect (Lich damage, Plague survival, etc.) and allowing utility use would require serious rebalancing.
unofficial theme song of the Nightmare Court
So im asking again why do you even bother playing this “wannabe” necromancer class?
I’m having fun.
I share your skepticism about the reaper (slow melee only shroud looks suicidal) and I’ve been pretty vocal in criticizing overall necro class design (DS anti-synergy with other skills). That said, playing my necro post-patch has reminded me of why I loved leveling and playing him a few years ago.
unofficial theme song of the Nightmare Court
Breaking News, the new Foot in the Grave break stuns and grant stability upon entering Shroud, with a CD of 7 sec (when traited), making it the shortest CD stunbreak + stability in the game.
Guess what, Necro is no longer a Ping-Pong Ball!
It’s true that the new FitG is awesome. That said, it’s not like we can save shroud just for stun-breaking given how much our class design relies upon using it for defense/offense. So on a practical level it’s not as readily available as you make it sound.

Facts first:
- Rush moves you 1200 distance slightly faster than running with swiftness
- But you don’t need swiftness
- And it still goes full distance if you are crippled (unlike someone running with swiftness)
- It tends to be buggy
Aside from the bugginess (which should be fixed) that’s pretty darn good mobility even without the extra that swiftness used to provide. Especially given that whirlwind is on the same weapon. In fact it is still better than most weapons.
…GS was all about mobility, now its completely gone and the weapon is really bad now in wvw, i have not been able to run away atleast once in wvw from nobody! any class can get me now without a problem.
You may say it should be like that, sure i can kinda understand that nike warriors was a bit too much.. but its from 100% to almost 0% chance to escape.
Honestly I find this kind of hyperbole amusing. This is a matter of practice. You have more mobility than most classes/specs and it can be done.

Ran something similar day after the patch. Was amazing how hard it was for people to kill me, even against multiple foes. On the other hand, the damage was relatively slow and anyone with the sense to run was nearly impossible to catch, much less kill.
Well that’s great, If I run away I can capture the point your standing on… oh.
- Breaking news: bunker builds have some advantages in Conquest.
- More recent breaking news: bunker builds aren’t meta for good reasons.
- Special bulletin: Necro’s have ping-pong issues in addition to the above bunker issues.
unofficial theme song of the Nightmare Court
- Vapor Form is subject to control effects.
- You don’t like people turtling in towers, so you want to make it harder for defenders to get back into towers once they leave………. You realize they just won’t leave, right?
- Attackers already have the advantage due to AoE mechanics and poor tower design. This change would shift the balance further in favor of attackers.
- Sally ports give defenders a usable defensive option. This is as it should be.

It technically does do that, only a portion of it though.
- The target takes full damage of the incoming attack – there is no reflection even of a portion.
- Retaliation damage is not a portion or percentage of the incoming attack – it is based solely on Power of the character who cast the boon.
The description is completely inaccurate.
