Its not really a surprise that low AP players want to skip or try for a psuedo speed run. Majority of LFG runs are exp req. speed runs, and with the toxicity that is involved new players need to take what they can get to try and learn how to get into the common speed runs. It seems to be the nature of Dungeons in GW2.

Speed run, zerker, and exp req or gtfo. Which leaves little room for new players or players who don’t know the dungeons to learn them. One of the reasons I’ve stayed away from them other then a few storyline ones for PVP tracks. Never actually done a group path or fractal.

I’ve been playing since launch but never bothered much with dungeons till a few months back when I decided to work on Dungeon Master. I did pre-reading of basic guides, didn’t join ‘exp only’ runs, explicitly stated I was new to the dungeon and asked if that was a problem…

And still got raged at fairly often for not having everything down pat. So yea, trying to PuG dungeons via LFG is pretty toxic to new players. I still haven’t finished a couple paths of Arah because it just wasn’t worth the hassle.

Balance changes are focused on PvP. The game is mainly about whichever game mode you chose to play. PvP is specifically designed to be an even playing field, so no PvE grinding/etc. is going to get you an advantage there.

  • sPvP
    All players are scaled up to level 80 and equipped with the same gear in PvP instances. It feels like a sport or board game here, seriously. So fair, so boring. I like games that require player skills, like Monster Hunter. However, I dislike games that require only players skills, like DotA, LOL and CS. I prefer to be destroyed by some old players with good gears rather than having so much fairness in PvP. Low level or weakly geared players are supposed to be defeated by older players easily (even I am the low level guy here). That said, sPvP is a perfect platform for competitions or leaderboard.
  • No open world PvP
    Probably the main reason why Tyria is so peaceful.
  • No KS
    Another reason Tyria is so peaceful. I am having a love hate feeling with this setting. I have played enough MMORPGs to know how annoying KS can be. However, without KS, the PvE gameplay feels empty. I don’t have to find a group, I can just drop by any events and walk away anytime I like. I even saw a lot of players in the forum say they simply AFK and auto attack the world bosses. Where is the fun in that???
  • No GvG
    WHY??? I am looking for something like the Band of Brothers war in EVE Online. I want big guild wars (it’s fine even I am not part of the war, I want to at least see something like this!!).
  • Easy leveling
    I learnt this from my previous post, “GW2 leveling is way too fast”. Now I understand why leveling in GW2 is so fast. “It unlocks all the contents for all the players quickly, so every players can play all the contents in the game.”. That’s my conclusion from my previous post. I am actually pretty shocked by this answer. “Access to all the contents”?? Isn’t this an MMORPG? From my previous MMORPGs experience, only top ranked or top level players can access to “all the contents” in the game. Why make all players accessible to all the contents in the game? It makes GW2 feels like a Single Player RPG with multiplayer feature enabled.
  • No world channel
    This is one of the features I like the most in MMORPG. This is where the arguments happened and where the guild wars started. I love watching those fights. However in GW2, world channel is not there. I guess the reason is “players will spam here and argue here, we don’t want this to affect other players”. Yeah, I can play Single Player games if I don’t want to affect by other players.
  • Conclusion
    All these settings make me feel like Anet is trying their best to make the game as easy as possible for the players. They don’t want players to feel any discomforts throughout the gameplay. You can have access to all gameplay, no one can disturb you, you won’t be bullied by old players, you can play casually and still get stuffs. In short, have fun.

ps. I am looking forward to Guild Halls in HoT (limited guild halls to be claimed only by strong guilds??). I hope it will turn Tyria into a war zone. * evil laugh *

  • sPvP – Anet has dreams of making this an esport. Can’t do that if it’s badly imbalanced.
  • No open world PvP – WvW and EotM fill this role in GW2. Try roaming there.
  • No Kill Stealing – If you are looking for PvE with an edge of uncertainty, try EotM.
  • No GvG – Yea, this should be added. At least let guilds rent private OS maps or something.
  • Easy leveling – GW2 is designed such that leveling and ‘end game’ are much the same. It’s just a different philosophy; not intended to be a ‘level grind’ game. Regarding ‘only top players access all content’: Did you know that less than 5% of vanilla WoW players ever saw the inside of Molten Core (not completed, just entered)? That’s a lot of wasted development time. MMORPG design philosophies have changed as a result.
  • No world channel – Taking enjoyment from watching others meltdown is a common human failing; it’s not a flaw in the game. Try reality TV.
  • Conclusion – Yes, the game is deliberately designed to minimize a player’s opportunity to infringe on other players’ fun.

Most people don’t enjoy flame wars, trolling and drama-fests, especially when someone else can inflict them involuntarily. Therefore, game design has shifted. There are still sandbox games like EVE and Archage if that’s what you want.

I noticed this today after thinking noone was nearby (my target nearest bind didn’t target anything) and being badly surprised by someone very being very, very close :P

It now will target the nearest enemy on the screen. This is not line of sight dependent, it is strictly field of view, as other posters have mentioned.

I’m not going to complain because it probably should have worked this way all along, but I would really have appreciated a heads-up in a patch note.

My main desire is for extra WvW rank points and badges to have a use beyond what is currently available.

WvW rank points:

  • new WvW specific cosmetic items would be cool
  • WvW magic find buff is better than nothing
  • or combine extra rank points with the new skill point currency (HoT)

eh. You can’t turtle without supply to build siege and repair walls/gate. Enemy players in that situation have a long run back, and a hard time getting back inside if you’re applying pressure. I don’t see this making a big difference on maps with reasonable population.

On the less populated servers it may have more impact; we’ll just have to see.

After I took the survey recently, I was saddened to see that Evon Gnashblade didn’t have any locations with his name as an option to vote on. Then after the survey finished, I saw why. Ellen Kiel commissioned the survey. This is another blatant political maneuver to keep Evon’s name out of the history books. Kiel is using her influence from the Captain’s Council in an unethical way.

I ask the great game caretakers at Anet to step in and correct this travesty. Evon Gnashblade, Hero of the People, should…. nay…. MUST have an opportunity to leave his mark on Lion’s Arch (aside from the Black Lion Trading Company). I could recommend that the lion statue in the center of LA be remade into a monument to the brave charr to saved the citizens from certain death at the hands of his former legionnaire.

I could use some gold, is he hiring more people to lobby for him?

I guess I’m on the minority on this one. My necro is asuran and while I liked the spin, the first swing looks perfectly done; it’s a head-to-toe cleave (without, of course, actually Cleaving). The backswing doesn’t actually look like a backswing even though it does damage, not sure what they were thinking there, but it doesn’t look terrible either.

The video of the human version does look a bit wimpy though.

Simple change.

Implement a “Are you sure you wish to block” feature when you right click block someone, this way you can’t accidently block your friends, now here’s where this would actually come into affect.

Once you’ve blocked someone, you’re not able to unblock them for 24 hours, and while they’re blocked, you’re not allowed to contact them in any way shape or form, be it messaging them via whispers, via say, map chat, guild chat, mail, anything, it’s not possible, they won’t even see your emotes.

This is why i suggest that we’re given a “Are you sure” window when blocking players, because when you’re attempting to join another map of a party member, occasionally you may accidentally click block, so a confirm feature would resolve this.

tl;dr if you block someone, you can’t message them in any way for 24 hours.

I don’t have any objection to a confirmation popup but you have failed to provide any reason for the 24 hour blackout idea. What is the reasoning/justification behind this?

[edit: as someone who’s been working with UI design and user metrics lately I have to say: do you know how many people read popup messages when they are in the middle of something else? Most people don’t. As far as I can tell, the 24 hour blackout idea would cause massive QQ from people who did block friends by accident (despite the popup) with no benefit. Again, why do this?]

If this where to be done, it would be a gem store item. It’s an item that’s at best, a QoL item, much like the home portal stone, also a gem store item.

Whilst I don’t particularly care one way or the other I would say this:

It doesn’t have to be a GemStore item. I have often thought that those of us who like exploring end up with an awful lot of excess Gifts of Exploration. I envisage a Mystic Forge recipe, requiring multiple of these, to create a re-useable item to unlock all waypoints on new characters.

Other such Mystic Forge uses for Gifts of Exploration could include infinite road markers.

While I’m not typically in favor of a gem store unlock, this I would have no objection to.

-no professions

That’s not hard it is just tedious. People want challenging mechanics that require organization, teamwork and quick thinking.

Pretty sure we have that, high level fractals triple trouble etc.

This isn’t a recurring content in the form of tedious rat race instances kind of game. I for one love that aspect. There isn’t constantly new mechanics to learn and then repetitively do them until your eyes bleed like standard mmo’s. The people that usually complain about the lack of challenging content with teamwork and etc. just want raiding and really should be playing a different mmo.

I agree.

But PvE is rarely “challenging mechanics that require organization, teamwork and quick thinking” after the first few people figure it out and post guides. A fast release cycle with gear treadmill is similarly tedious rather than hard.

Someone who really wants challenge, teamwork and quick thinking should look for human opponents… i.e. PvP.

…they’re clearly being balanced around the “best case scenario” of hitting 5 enemies & being traited with “Augury of Death”….

Devs have to take all cases into account; this is why they should stop making abilities that are so powerful in that best case (except for occasional elites/etc.). Skills that have more even performance between best & worse case are easier to balance with other skills & traits – which makes for better class balance as a whole.

Also I prefer characters that don’t perform like a yo-yo.

Are you advocating T6 mats become account-bound? Again, I’m not sure that would be universally welcomed.

No, I am not referring to T6 mats. I’m saying that just because ‘time intensive account bound mats’ won’t be welcomed doesn’t mean they won’t be part of the precursor crafting process. I cited Mawdrey as an example of a very long/expensive crafting process that involves unique/account bound ingredients (as well as time-gating).

It is likely that there will be new account bound and/or time-gated ingredients or intermediate steps involved in precursor creation, as Mawdrey includes Powerful Grow Lamp/Mist Infused Clay Pot/etc. Some of those steps will probably be expensive gold sinks.

Good feedback, my thoughts were similar so you saved me some typing :P

I have concerns about cast times on GS skills as well – high damage doesn’t mean much if we can’t land hits. It may depend on how well we can maintain chill.

This may end up being too binary – either we can maintain near perma-chill and will be seriously OP or we can’t and get sniped to death. Not sure how much Death’s Charge will help.

This discussion is old and the server tech has changed. If your friend is on an NA server, then pick any NA server you want and you will be able to play with them. The only exception is WvW which does require that you be on the same server.

P.S. Starting your own thread would be more effective at getting an answer than resurrecting an ancient one.

Anet needs to stop calling or referring to the Dragonhunters as “witch hunters”. GW2 has a large Pagan community and whether their ancestors or even if they themselves are witches, the witch hunters past and present still victimize anyone they view as a “witch”. This needs to stop in real life AND game life.

GW2 has made strides in equal treatment of the LGBT community, please don’t make unintended victims out of those who follow the Pagan Path in our community, in the form of Sylvari mostly, by using this reference.

Just please stop referring to the unfortunately named Dragonhunter as “witch hunters”.

I know you are all excited about the changes you have made but quite frankly you have ruined the Guardian for me with these terrible skills, traits and name.

The fact that you are encouraging people to hunt those who may or may not be minions of Mordremoth (and face it, the fact that the Pale Tree is/was intended as a dragon champion before being found, planted and raised by Ronan and Ventari makes every Sylvari a minion in the eyes of a zealot witch hunter) is a major disappointment.

Personally I was hoping for a Guardian more along the lines of healing and party support, not some crazed zealot in the Tea Party/GOP venue.

I have nineteen level 80’s but I fear that my Guardians have all just been retired to mule status.

Personally I was surprised by their use of the term in the dragon hunter description for similar reasons. To be fair though, ‘witch’ is a generic term that has been used in history and fantasy for both benevolent and malicious magic users. They’ve made it clear they are talking about fighting a threat to all living things on Tyria; I would take it in the spirit it’s intended and not bother being terribly offended.

Scrolls of Knowledge leaving the game?

Still some confusion here. Are skills being reworked? I thought I understood traits were being reworked, but saw nothing on skills. Therefore I don’t understand why I should not fill in the blank spots in the skill tree, even if I don’t really like them. I have far and away enough surplus of skill points not earned by skill challenges to purchase anything I might need for the forge. I’ve already made a couple of dozen ascended items, and don’t see so many more in the future that I can’t get augur stones.

Some skills appear to be getting reworked, some mechanics are changing, some traits are changing in ways that will alter how skills will get used.

But we were discussing the fact that currently there are two ways to unlock traits:

  • You can perform a task in Tyria, anything from completing a puzzle to completing a zone to story mode.
  • You can spend gold and skill points.

So in effect there are three questions that people have had:

  • Should I consume my SP scrolls now?
  • Should I unlock skills now?
  • Should I spend SPs/Gold to unlock traits now? (Or do the tasks? or just wait for the new system.)

I agree there’s no reason to wait to unlock skills: anything unlocked today will, one way or another, be unlocked when the new system goes live. I also think there’s no reason to wait to consume SP scrolls (and only a small matter of deciding which toon should “eat” them).

The answer to the third question doesn’t have as strong a consensus. Some think there is no chance that ANet will refund any SP or gold spent to unlock traits; some are convinced they will. I’m agnostic: I have no idea if they will or not, so I’m reluctant to spend now. OTOH, it could be months before we get specializations/hero points; I don’t expect that everyone can afford to be without critical traits indefinitely either.

I doubt there will be a refund, but they may make a one-time ‘transition adjustment’ of adding extra hero points based on what you already have unlocked. If they don’t many non-PvE’ers will be screwed since we have lots of characters with skills unlocked by scrolls & xp bars past 80 instead of skill challenges (all of my characters are pre-NPE, so traits where never an issue for me).

If ANet comes through with their promises of “truly chalenging PvE content” I can’t help but wonder what this content will be balanced around.

‘Truly challenging’ doesn’t have to mean ‘WoW gear check’. I don’t know what they have planned, but I hope the challenging part is more focused on teamwork, timing and positioning, etc. than gear checks.

I tried all races and both sexes when starting the game. I found the movement animations annoyingly awkward for them all but asura… who are hilariously awkward.

So my characters are all asuran.

What reasons did I miss for zerker only being fine?

Short answer:

Stale content is the problem, not that we’ve figured out how to do it without passive defenses after doing the exact same fights for going-on 3 years.

This, really. Zerk meta evolved in dungeons. Once someone has done the same encounter dozens of times they don’t typically need sturdier armor.

What the ‘zerk only’ crowd forgets is that people didn’t start out using zerk in dungeons because noone knew how to do them. There are times when non-zerk is a good idea; specifically when the content is unknown or less predictable.

Personally I don’t use zerk on SW event maps anymore because the random spawn waves have enough varied mechanics, high damage and high HP that it’s more effective to wear something else.

A couple notes on Dragonhunter. We went with this name because we felt it was evocative of the medieval witch hunters. Guardians consider themselves protectors of the innocent. Followers of their faith be it in honor, valor, etc. The origin of the dragonhunter is a more subtle nuanced version of this. Guardians fight for justice and the dragonhunter faction believes justice is the eradication of dragons and their minions. I understand this is a lot more high concept than Mesmer but at the end of the day we felt like we wanted to try and push a more mature theme here. I hope this helps explain our thinking. We had other generic names in mind but felt like it was important to have a mix of spec names that are generic fantasy, more Tyrian fantasy, and more high concept. This one falls more in the third category.

If the dragons are supposed to essentially be forces of nature, I don’t see how one can take a moral stance against them and enact justice. It’s like taking a righteous stand against all sea water because of flooding and tsunamis.

Nor is it a moral concept. I get the DH concept they’re trying to sell. It wasn’t what I was hoping for but it sorta works. And really I care more about functionality than names; I can always invent my own concept.

My main wish was for a ranged option that doesn’t suck and it looks like that’s happening; very cool. Traps though… what’s next, elementalists with venoms and warriors with minions?

It’s the reverse of what we have in game. “Nature” in the form of living, breathing, beings trying to kill society.

After looking over the Longbow skills, True shot really seems to be too strong. I don’t mind it being a skill that immobilizes you but it needs more of a nerf. Increasing the cd would help as well, maybe 10?

Edit: Now most of us need to understand the only REAL reason we saw the guardian doing 4k crits was because he was using an Assassin’s amulet. Look back at its health, 11k leads me to believe that it might only be possible with full glass.

A game that’s very much about movement and positioning… and we have to stand still to do strong damage. I understand what they are trying to do but it’s bad/unfun design. They would be much better off reducing the damage and reducing (or removing) the immobilize.

I don’t care how big the damage is, 3/4 of a second is so long that only idiots won’t dodge or interrupt it.

[edit: I have similar concerns about #5 – the cc and most of the damage occur at the end. Almost 3 seconds is a long, long time for enemies to stand still with glowing arrows raining down around them. I’d like to see the damage spread out evenly over the cast time and maybe the CC effect moved up to 1.5 seconds into the cast.]

From what I’m gathering people would rather it be called Witch Hunter than Dragon Hunter because the term “Witch” is inherently associated with being evil and that goes against the thematic elements of the Guardian blah blah blah. Now having said that, WHERE ARE THE kitten WITCHES IN THE GUILD WARS UNIVERSE? I don’t know about any of you but I’ve yet to encounter any.

The majority of you people just dislike the name for the simple fact that it has “Dragon” in it and you automatically associate that with a childish mindset. In the GW2 universe the evil and corrupt are the DRAGONS and the DRAGONS MINIONS so why is it so unbearably hard to comprehend the fact that a sect of righteous, holy warriors have chosen to hunt down and exterminate the corruption and evil that’s spreading?

Now you may say “WAHHH BUT EVERYBODY HUNTS AND EXTERMINATES THEM!” and you’d be wrong. During this time there IS a unified effort to combat and stop the Elder Dragons, yes, however that is NOT the main goal of the other classes. Engineers didn’t suddenly wake up one morning and go “Hey, you know what? I think I’m going to become technologically proficient so that years from now I’m going to possess all the relevant skills I need to fight something that myself, nor others actually know is coming or even believes to be real for that matter!”

My god you people are kittening thick.

Pretty sure I met a witch in Toxal Bog but she makes the best stew in that miserable place; I wouldn’t hunt the lady.

No , your friend is mistaken. conjures (and conjure traits) have been buffed more than any other skill in the game, and they’re still widely regarded as crap outside of PVE.

The mechanics are just too clunky and giving up 20 skills plus a utility slot just to get 5 mediocre skills is a terrible, terrible tradeoff.

This is why I’m not a fan of conjures/transforms in general from a design standpoint. The way they lock you out of so many other skills is just punishing.
