I have to agree with the op. WvW is what I love most about this game, but as long as 15+ group play is a pirateshippy snoozefest, I’m not interested.

The mechanics of large group gameplay need to be addressed; changing rewards doesn’t touch the core issue.

The fact that the game mode isn’t doing well has a little to do with the braindead additions they have made to it, but that’s not really the biggest issue. People keep talking about new maps, new rewards, new this, new that.

None of that matters if the fights are not fun.

The leader of my havoc guild used to make really cool videos from WvW footage, showcasing guilds on our server and so on. She recently came back and wanted to record fights and make new videos. What she found, however, is that the footage was boring as hell because the fights were boring as hell.

There is no balance, no diversity. It’s all particle showers and skill spam. Use whatever is off cooldown and let your passives take care of the rest. There is no push and pull, none of that “he used X so I’ll use Y”. There are no turtle guards who sacrifice damage for survival, instead there’s DH that has both. Or Daredevil. Or Scrapper. Or Berserker. Block block block evade evade evade invuln invuln invuln. 8k, 9k, 12k crits per skill.

WvW is all about the fights. The objectives, the map design, it’s all there to encourage encounters with the enemy. So when the experience of those encounters is nothing but the same condi-passive-block bullcrap over and over and over, is it no wonder that people leave?

The solution lies not with the WvW team, but with the apparently non-existent balance one.

I used to spend a lot of time in WvW because the gameplay in coordinated guild groups was fun and engaging. Now it mostly isn’t. There are plenty of reasons for that, but the biggest turning point for me was the stab change. I understand why it was considered necessary and it worked fairly well in other game modes, but it wrecked the ‘fun and engaging’ part of WvW large group play.

The main reason they eventually linked them is because the bottom half of wvw was a ghost town. T1 right now, even with server linking has the same activity level of t4 or t5 did 2 years ago from my memory.

Might be time zone related, but anyways, I think they did have a solution for this, which was then rejected by the community (EOTM). The more I look back and think about it, I think they meant EOTM to be how they originally envisioned WvW, and it would solve “most” of those logistic problems (population and coverage), and they could theoretically shift the teams around in the same way they do linking now.

Naturally that didn’t sit well with most of the dedicated WvW players, as most of those want WvW to be a competitive game mode.

The more I look at WvW, I really can’t say it is designed to be competitive at all. All the mechanics and ways things are set up screams casual. I keep wondering what would have happened if ANet actually had included the EOTM setup from the start instead of WvW as is, and how people would react to it, and what the player base would look like (In terms of Casual vs Competitive etc).

I agree, despite how negatively the community reacted. Four hour matches would have allowed guilds to pick a timeframe that suited them and compete against guilds that played during the same time without ‘losing’ all of their work. Long enough to be an epic battle, short enough to finish and move on in one sitting.

I’m “bored” of HoT in the sense that it didn’t give me as player the extra playtime and fun I hoped for… I am really ready for new content that is more accommodating my situation (call it limited time casual if you like)…

I’m in a similar situation, but not due to content. What kept me coming back to the game was fun & engaging gameplay with playstyles that I enjoyed. There are several pre-HoT professions I like but are fairly stale after years of play. I was hoping for new playstyles that would be fun and keep me coming back for more. Unfortunately I didn’t love any elite specs. I wasn’t looking for OP specs, just a playstyle that meshed for me. It didn’t happen.

That, combined with changes in WvW, has left me uninterested in playing.

Revenants can literally AFK and spam me with neverending pulses of Fury, Swiftness and Might, wonder what their performance is when they actually push buttons

Not much better if they are running that many facets. Those things require energy and so do attacks. Trying to do both at once just runs the rev out of energy and the facets de-toggle.

Damage is great if you can actually hit enough to build the kitten adrenaline which decays like freakin plutonium within seconds and when wefinally do manage to berserk, our burst abilities are practically downgrades. Hammer, bow burst? OMFG ballerina on steroids.

I disagree. Adrenaline is something that you can build quite easy. You could activate “To the Limit” or “Signet of Fury” right at the start of a fight so you got enough to berserk. It only decays if you are out of combat. You can easily use berserk and burst 3-5 times before berserk is canceled and you can have it almost all the time on cooldown because of the usage. And about the downgrades. I dont know how you think they are downgrades. Yes some of them have a changed hit range like bow and hammer but they offer a lot more in exchange of this. The hammer primal burst grants 2 sec immobilize and 1/2 sec daze and you just need 10 adrenaline but the hammer burst deals at 10 adrenaline only 1 sec stun. The primal burst is much better for break bars then the normal burst.

Our passive heals are horrible and our active condition removal is absurd, requiring a hit to take effect.

That always depends which traits and skills you use. Warrior have not much condi cleanse from the beginning if you ignore runes etc. That was anets design intention.

I swear 50% of the problem of anet not hearing our complaints is the PvE players replying to every thread that berserker is fine in PvE. Thanks, did you know that the sky gets lighter in the mornings? Wasn’t it really obvious from the context of that post that he was referring entirely about PvP? Who has e v e r needed to slot Cleansing Ire in PvE, much less have any problem landing burst skills on brainless PvE mobs?

Sorry, my anger isn’t directed at you in particular, I’ve just been reading so many of posts like yours that can’t immediately tell the distinction between PvP and PvE contexts and post stuff like “berkserker is fine, I can apply 25 burn on world bosses” etc etc etc

It’s stuff like this that made Anet buff Berserker damage mods as if that was EVER the problem with Berserker.

… clearly the problem is people who fail to understand unspecified ranting. It’s not like someone could be expected to say what they are upset about when breaking into a rage-quit tirade.

You have this 100% backwards. If queues would drive balance they would have done so over the past 3 years. Top tiers have queues and lower tiers that don’t are open for transfers, yet here we are.

That is the mistake in your thinking, they do not have queues. No world has consistently full maps any longer….

What action are they supposed to take?

Free transfers and drop all servers to very high. Let the players choose and figure it out.

Letting players choose is going to lead to utter imbalance in the end.

Just look at PvP hot join. Winning or losing really don’t matter there. But ppl still game it to extreme to get a victory. With your suggestion, WvW will simply become a large scale meaningless hot-join game.

Oh really? And, what is it we have now?

Population balance will come from the Queues. That has always been the deciding factor. When waiting becomes impractical and boring, players will move to a place they can get right in. Not only will it help balance across matches, it’ll help with coverage too. Because the problems aren’t from too many players, it’s from having too few players.

The next question will undoubtedly be, but what about the lower tiers… Unfortunately, Anet mistakenly over estimated the number of servers required at launch and needs to rectify it. Either that or simply make an Alliance level that Worlds can join into.

Overall, empowering the player is the solution. Players want to PLAY! They want good matches and they want to have fun. They are willing to move around to create this. It’s Anet that’s starving out and depleting WvW right now.

btw.. I didn’t say to leave it open forever, just right now it’s needed for a couple weeks to get things balanced out and running again.

I guess necromancers need to live in their own instances apart from the rest of the game, not being able to support or receive support

I’m fairly confident that boons will still apply their effects to necromancers even if this trait is not equipped.

I’ve had a lot of fun on my necro over the years and have no problem admitting they can be situational powerhouses. That said, necro has had serious design flaws since launch. Necro anti-synergy with itself (much less a team) is very frustrating.

The core balance issue seems to be lifeforce gain. It varies wildly with situation, making effective balance impossible and leading to kludge fixes like ‘no healing in Shroud’.

I suggest:

  • re-conceptualize lifeforce as something a necro only gets from hitting a target
  • normalize lifeforce gain/time for all weapons making it predictable enough to balance
  • remove lifeforce gain on nearby death (sad to suggest this but it is too unpredictable to balance effectively)
  • allow healing in Shroud to remove the worst anti-synergy necro suffers

continue to balance from there.

You’ve probably considered something like this already. If so, I’d be interested in understanding why it didn’t work out.

all i see now days are people using the old methods of Damage is best you won’t see many Reflects now days.

Sounds to me like people are still learning to deal with new class abilities and the meta hasn’t shifted yet. I’m no expert and it’s possible the traps are dealing too much damage, but complaining something is OP because it does well vs. old meta when the whole game has just changed is disingenuous.

Give it a little time for people to learn and adapt first.

Grey, I understand tailoring your build and gear to the content you are running, but the HP difference between my rev and guard is pretty drastic. We’re talking 5k, and half my Guard’s gear gives vitality, NONE of my Rev’s does. I don’t necessarily think it needs to be the exact same, but even a 3k buff would be pretty significant.

I should have clarified, my post was aimed at the 3 posts above mine rather than your OP. I don’t have anything really against an HP buff; I’m just not sure it’s justified given how good guardian sustain can be now.

Vanilla DPS guards are about high burst damage on fairly long CDs. It’s good for PvP where you face a few very tough enemies with some time between fights.

It is crap for open world where you face an essentially never-ending stream of weaker enemies. This is about using a build that fits the content: build less for burst and more sustained damage (and health).

It may sound silly, but try zerk with a good ’ole fashioned AH/EM shout build running scepter/focus and your choice of hammer or GS.

While we’re theorycrafting improvements: the auto-attack should not include a combo field. No auto-attack should; combo fields should be something players use deliberately not an incidental part of the auto chain that interferes with coordinated group combo use.

Of course this would require rebalancing the auto and/or other skills to avoid a DPS loss.

sorry im pretty new to GW2 mostly started coz of the reaper and scrapper.

im used to other MMOs that release new classes and you can play ALL the content with them, not do ALL the content and THEN play them.

Totally agree. I expected masteries to be a long term progression thing. Same with legendary crafting, etc. Elite specs I expected to require an unlock, but one that could be achieved relatively quickly so I could actually play the new content with a fully functional new spec.

Some of us play GW2 because we don’t like the WoW-clone game design with rising level caps and similar crap, but there is not much difference between mastery grindwalls and raising the level cap.

This game just lost much of its appeal for me.

400 Hero Points to unlock Elite Spec? Why?
You already screwed me over having 4k+ Skill Points then you turn them into like 200 Hero Points and now i need 400 of them to play the game i bought for WvW purpose ONLY. Lower that kitten. I’m not here to grind , I’m here to play. If i wanted to play Archeage I would go play that crap.

What would be the fastest way to get hero Points?

Unfortunately it looks like PvD farming EotM. The heroic thingys drop pretty fast (I played about 15 minutes and got 4) and 10 of them will unlock a random hero point. I’m not grinding EotM for the expansion though.

I’d rather read a book.

That’s some really odd wording.

What’s a ‘profession impact and instant effect’?
And why not say, ‘so they finish faster and reduce visual clutter’?

There’s no reason action cam mode can’t be equally functional while still being a different mode.

A lot of games with action cam type modes will let you press a key to free the camera (while the key is depressed) then automatically snap back when released. It lets you keep the action mode and still look sideways when needed.

As it is, I’d have to toggle into and out of action cam mode. Use click-n-hold to move camera in one mode, don’t click to move it in the other… not good UI/UX design.

The ‘Free Camera’ keybind doesn’t appear to work Action Camera. It is needed for action camera to be usable imo; have to be able to look sideways while running forwards/etc.

Personally I’m a bit frustrated because I enjoy playing the game but I don’t enjoy spending a bunch of time trying to get from point A where I am to point B where I can actually play.

I don’t understand why game designers think vertical zones are such a great innovation when every game I’ve seen them in has demonstrated that most players avoid them whenever possible.

If you’ve been playing the game for a while your main characters should be good to go to unlock all the new trait lines. Yeah it won’t be too fun farming hero points, but that’s why you should just not farm hero points and play your alts as much as you enjoy them.

If your main character(s) don’t have enough points right away you’re pretty new to the game. The elite specs are for enhancing your fully developed level 80. Spend a little more time fleshing out your characters and you’ll be running that elite spec in no time.

Did you even log in and try it yourself?

With 210 points (ALL THE POINTS YOU CAN GET FROM TYRIA), you’d only able to unlock to ADAPT TRAIT for your specialization.

It’s totally unusable before you acquire all 400.

No it isn’t. I had 213 and I’m playing dragon hunter in the new $%&#@ vertical zone right now. You don’t need all traits to play it, the traits just improve it.

Why is any of this a surprise? We’ve known since before the skill point split that all core and elite specs would be unlocked by hero points. We’ve known since the trait revamp that elite specs would probably cost a lot of hero points, given what core specs cost.

I spent 3-4 weeks casually getting all hero points on all 8 of my characters and finished a couple weeks ago. Plan ahead better.

Will Stability be Getting a Buff?

So it seems to me the entire complaint is that some cannot succeed after they took the ability away to completely ignore 1/4 of the skills of your enemies in the game.

Stability was OP. Those who cannot function without it, as 6 out of 8 professions have since release, are a shining example of how they did not develop the skill to play without it.

Personally I’ve hated the stab change because it changed WvW from a hectic melee smashfest into a cautious pirateshipy tippytoe-dance.

From a balance perspective I won’t argue against it. One stab used to counter an infinite number of CCs and now it is more balanced.

The problem is we’ve only shifted what was OP because CCs like static field can CC an infinite number of players. That’s just as unbalanced as the old stab was.

Determining Match-Ups

Correct that glicko is not intended for matchups like this. Specifically it is intended for cases where opponents are relatively balanced, which servers rarely are.

Incorrect that a ‘winner up/loser down’ system would improve things. The devs addressed this proposal long, long ago. You can model it yourself if you care to, but the bottom line is it produces more heavily unbalanced matches than glicko.

Is it true points don't count this week?

‘On the morning of Thursday, October 22nd, WvW will be terminating without completing or updating Glicko ratings as normal. This will be the end of the classic (“Alpine”) Borderlands maps for the foreseeable future.’

So nothing we do this week matters?

Depends on whether having fun in WvW matters to you :P

Must grind Pve for elite spec ?!

uhm i do have more then 170 hero points on like every lv 80+ char i have ..coz u get them also from lvl ups . as u also get xp in wvw u wont need pve for that.

That is false.

You do not get Hero Points from gaining levels, used to get skill points before they split it up to Hero Points and Spirit Shards, but not any longer.

Not precisely accurate. You do not get a Hero Point for each bar of XP completed, however; some of the level up rewards at certain levels < 80 do include a fixed amount of hero points.

Remember when the trait change came out? Just being 80 gives you enough hero points to unlock all core/vanilla specs even if you have no hero challenges in the world completed.

The basic argument is valid though; WvWers are essentially screwed here. PvE hero point grind is mandatory to unlock elite specs for WvW.

There will be no WvW active during HoT launch. The are ending present matches on Thursday morning and not beginning the next week’s reset till Saturday night.
