Game Updates: Traits

Hey there,

Colin Johanson and I had a chat about this thread today. He actually brought it up because he wanted to make sure that forum members know that the dev team is very aware of the concerns that our players feel about traits, and also to let you know that the devs read and refer to this subject (and particularly this thread) quite frequently. We’ve said it before, but it remains true: Your voices are being heard and your input is valued.

We wish there was more to say today, but please take heart that this subject is part of current development team discussions and we’ll let you know more as soon as we reasonably can do so.

So many promises have been broken… but your post gives me a glimmer of hope.

Thank you for braving the hailstorm to update us!

When you try to do some of the traits that require grouping (most of them) on lonely maps, you will beg for more story related ones.

[Suggestion] Old "town clothes" as armor skins or outfits

GuzziHero.2467

Eww no? There already tonns of skins that ruins any kind of lore that AN managed to make at all. Don’t let the game became like Aion/usual fashion bs-mmo, where you cross furry costume dudes, etc…

All the things in this game and you pick on that as lore breaking? How about the fact that in a world with firearms, bows still exist? Or swords that shoot Void Ray lasers.

Or even the Jackalope? How is a burrowing animal like the rabbit supposed to do so with blooming great antlers? :p

Naga MMO 2014 vs Logitech G600

GuzziHero.2467

Got my G600 yesterday and I can say that my first impression is that it is a very well built mouse. I struggle a little to get used to keybinding on it >< but overall pleases as it made my life easier already. Anyone can give me a example of their key binding?

Personally, I run…

G9 – G13 is 1 to 5 for weapon skills. Gshift 6 to 0 for heal/utility.
G14 – G17 F1 to F4. Gshift the same so they activate whether or not I am shifting
G18 – speed down
G19 – speed up
G20 scroll preset speeds

Thats all I need All my important skills are on the first three rows in easy reach and I never have to take my hands off the mouse or WASD in combat.

I’ve been thinking about the G600 too.

I currently have a G500 and it just doesn’t have enough buttons.

Anyone go from G500 to G600? Thoughts?

I went from a G700 to a G600. When it dies, I will buy another G600.

Most awesome mouse imaginable, IMHO. You do need a ‘claw’ grip for it, but that suits me just fine.

How the game is doing now ?

GuzziHero.2467

I adore the game but I am one of the most critical. However, as concisely and neutral as I can…

Good:
New wardrobe system means you can change the appearance of anything you own without merging 2 items.
New outfit system lets you put a single piece skin over your clothing.
Minis can be displayed at all times.
Living Story continues to improve.
You now have a much higher chance to drop loot that you can use, and personal story loot is great, meaning you often dont have to buy any gear till you are level 80.
Megaservers mean that in PVE game world, you will rarely see an empty map, though some issues with large guild events need to be addressed.
Tequatl has been buffed, and a new large scale even in Bloodtide Coast has been introduced (Triple Trouble).

Bad:
New characters now have to unlock traits with in game tasks or purchasing with gold and skill points. Many of the tasks require grouping, dungeons or time-gated tasks. Expect to be level 80 with fewer than 10 traits unlocked.
The levelling system has been needlessly changed to make other skills take longer to acquire.
Craftable precursors never happened.
The PVE game world is pretty much as it was except for Kessex Hills and Lions Arch that got wrecked, and 2 new maps called Dry Top and Silverwastes.
Personal story got rearranged and messed up so it no longer makes sense.

Worst:
The Anet staff very rarely communicate with us, and we feel that our concerns are completely ignored. Long running complaints about the trait acquisition have been blatantly ignored for over 9 months.

G600 owned and loved here. Some of the side buttons near the back are a fiddle to get to but you just assign things you use occasionally to them, such as mouse DPI etc.

I run my attack and F skills on the front three rows (1-5 then F keys, Gshift 6-0 then F keys) and it is outstanding, I never have to take my left hand’s fingers off WASD.

I’d like to add this info that I posted in another thread that has been buried in the swirling sands of General Discussion:

Trait line 1: 7 of 13 are Group Events
Trait line 2: 7 of 13 are Group Events
Trait line 3: 8 of 13 are Group Events
Trait line 4: 9 of 13 are Group Events (unless you find the Earths Gap chest on a Necromancer)
Trait line 5: 10 or 11 of 13 are Group Events

I know Obsidian Sanctum JP can unlock a trait on some classes as well, but there it is. Play how you want to play, as long as its with other people!

I totally agree with the OP. I have deleted 2 post April characters, and was trying to level another. I lost heart at being level 52 with 2 traits (both from EOTM) and deleted it.

Its impossible for me to make new characters now.

For me, it isn’t so much the system as the fact that getting traits forces upon us tasks that are much higher than the tier they are meant for, and so much forced grouping in dungeons and the likes. You are at the mercy of other players (and their abilities) to succeed.

[Suggestion] Playable Skritt race

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: GuzziHero.2467

GuzziHero.2467

Sorry, won’t happen. Besides, if you get playable Skritt before I get my Gelatinous Cube I will blow a gasket.

As I said before…

Forget anything that is a studyable race in the LS. Thats Ogres, Skritt, Hylek, Grawl, Quaggans.

Forget any of the antagonist races/factions. That would be Centaurs (plus, how would they swim?), Nightmare Court, Flame Legion, Inquest, Svanir.

Largos are out as, according to the personal story, they are incredibly rare and avoid contact with all other races if at all possible. It would be as stupid as the Miqo’te in FF14 ARR – they’re supposedly rare and solitary creatures yet the designers make them in such a way that EVERYONE who faps to nekomimi will roll one.

What does this leave us? Kodan, Tengu, Ettin and a handful of others which have groups who are non-antagonistic. Kodan is out right away, they are Norn-based. Tengu are possible but require a very specific armour redesign and we can see what a mess Anet made of Charr armour. Ettin would be fun, but they don’t wear clothes so we can forget them.

Personally, I want to see playable Ooze, but I know it’ll never happen.

Slight Ranger grumbles

in Ranger

Posted by: GuzziHero.2467

GuzziHero.2467

For some reason, Ranger seems to be especially bad when it comes to autotargeting and tab targeting. Other classes have issues, but this seems to be just… worse on Ranger.

I am talking about having 2 targets in front of me, and AT fires off at a 90 degrees to try and hit a target that is off screen, and out of range. Or as in the situation i just had – Ettin attacking a Doe. I attack Ettin and because my special school pet attacked the Doe, decided to kill it too. AT attacks a second Doe further away and aggros that, so now I have to kill them both…

The other slight grumble is that with Quick Draw equipped, it suggests that Longbow is now the better weapon than Shortbow even for close range. Even under 500 range, LB #1 does 4 times the damage of SB #1 and LB #2 on an 8s cooldown does tons more damage than SB can hope to do in the same amount of time, plus inflicts vuln.

Only Piercing Shot makes SB even viable compared to LB at short range. I agreed, enormously, with reducing the SB range so the LB could have its true niche, but now I find myself equipping LB all the time.

Pretty elaborate list, but yeah. There are several inaccuracies.

If you’re half-way competent, you can solo most trait unlocks.

You aren’t forced to do it with people but with certain events, it’s inevitable. Other people do world events and WvW.

I’ll never understand this complaint with regards to traits.

I remember skill hunting in GW1 being largely the same affair, people advertising they needed help getting this or that… it was a good time.

I don’t know if people have become more antisocial or have deeper pockets these days. One or the other I reckon.

Trait line 1: 7 of 13 are Group Events
Trait line 2: 7 of 13 are Group Events
Trait line 3: 8 of 13 are Group Events (9 if you don’t do Obsidian Sanctum on a Ranger)
Trait line 4: 9 of 13 are Group Events (10 if you don’t do Obsidium Sanctum on a Thief or Elementalist, or find the Earths Gap chest on a Necromancer)
Trait line 5: 10 or 11 of 13 are Group Events

Most, hmm?

Some of the fancier ones are worth quite a bit of gold.

But doesn’t match up to the gems you bought them with in value.

Huh??

You do get skill points in EoTM like any other part of the game. You can unlock several traits in EoTM.

Not all of them by any means, but this bit you wrote here is all kinds of wrong and confusing.

Though I suppose someone might not know what they want to do for their ‘endgame’ build at this point if they’re using EoTM exclusively, since you can’t unlock everything there…

No skill points in EOTM. You do get traits… but only a few. Exactly what I typed.

PvP has received a few major updates, system and QoL wise. One new map.

I guess I can’t argue. Never touched PvP except to help a guildie with her monthly achievements.

Every time someone says this, it’s wrong.

This gear advantage is moot in PvP (all gear is balanced) and amounts to something like ~10% with weapon + armor for PvE and WvW.

It’s a very negligible gain, put there for people who need want something to grind work for.

It’s peripheral to all but the most asinine of players. Exotic is still the golden standard. Ascended is for the dedicated. Is ~10% worth the investment?

Most sane casual people would say no, and do just fine in every aspect of the game with exotics.

I have seen ‘Ascended only’ dungeon runs, but I guess this is the one point I partly agree with you on. I’d rather have my Exotics with Strength Runes.

Even reworded I can’t make sense of this. This needs elaborating. Pre-80, you’re weaker by default. Are you saying the game is somehow making you even weaker?

Because leveling to 80 has changed quite a bit, and you’re given far more stat points at certain ‘steps’ than you used to get.

Because of the stepped levelling, at level 33, for example, you are still on level 28 stats. I have literally been struggling in a fight, levelled up mid fight and instantly put a multi-melta to the face of my opponent.

I did correct the part about the WvW ranks. The majority of the content of WvW has not changed, but its a game mode I don’t play so I missed the ranks/skills part. This has been corrected. Not sure what buffs Ashen means other than the catch-up bonuses.

Ascended gear still has higher stats than its corresponding exotic plus associated Jewel (aka zerk with Exquisite Ruby Jewel) so I haven’t changed that.

There is a quote by Gaile Gray about Colin Johanson, suggesting that SAB will be back but we have no timeframe. Added this to OP for factual accuracy.

There have been a lot of returnees recently and it is often up to me to deliver the straight answers they need over what has changed. As yourself, if you were a returning player, would this present an optimistic outlook for someone trying to get back into GW2?

- There is new content in the form of Living Story part 2. If you have not unlocked any of it, it will cost you 1400gems to get up to speed. The Living Story episodes take less than 6 hours to complete the lot, if you are half-competent.

- Outfits were added meaning that instead of buying one item for the stats you want, and another for the appearance, you only need to buy the stat one and add the appearance in your wardrobe. Great addition.

- You now get pretty darned good loot from Personal Story, and you may not have to buy any new gear till you hit level 80. Items dropped are now more likely to fit your character class, and you can cover up how odd and ugly your mish-mash gear looks with gem store outfits. Don’t waste transmute charges until you want your end-game look.

- There is one new dungeon path. No new Personal Story, and they rearranged the current one so it doesn’t make sense anymore.

- Traits are messed up. You now unlock the tiers as normal but have to perform tasks to obtain actual traits. This costs 360SP + 43G, or you are forced into group and WvW content. Either way, you grind.

- Town clothes are now worthless. Everything you spent money on in this direction is wasted.

- SAB is gone and is not returning in the near future. This has been edited as new information has arisen. See below

- EOTM was added and its a quick way to level BUT… you won’t get any of the skill points and few of the traits you need for when you hit level 80, so you will have all the gear, but no idea, when it comes to your endgame build.

- WvW has not changed much. They added some new ranks and skills, and buffs that give small bonuses to servers that are behind on points as well as some changes to maps. They tried a league system. I don’t play WvW so I can’t say whether this was good or not. (thanks to Ashen for his input here)

- SPvP has not received many updates, a couple of maps maybe.

- If you make a new character, expect to level to 15 quicker than before, but be locked from certain abilities and F-skills until level 22.

- There are 2 new maps for PvE, Dry Top and Silverwastes, which are pretty darned cool.

- Ascended gear was added which gives better stats than Exotic PLUS some gizmo for Fractals that I just can’t get my head around. Oh and you have to grind crafting to get most of it.

- Stepped progression in levelling means you will almost always be weaker than your actual character level. reworded to alter context

Nothing there is factually incorrect. If you were a returning player, would this make you want to try GW2 again?

Edit:
Ah yes! You reminded me!

- Craftable precursors never came and there is no realistic hope for them on the way since we don’t get much communication these days.

- Housing or guild housing never happened.

- But they DID make guilds multi server!

SAB (thanks Vayne!)

Gaile Gray said:
According to Colin Johanson, Guild Wars 2 Game Director, Super Adventure Box will be back in the future. We don’t have a timeframe for the return of the SAB, but we will be bringing back this popular content.

I know you would like more details, more info, a date, etc., but that’s not available right now. I hope the above comment reassures you, though, because at the core, the important answer is that yes, SAB will be back in the future.

Actually, I did make another, saw the lack of traits I had at level 20, and realised that I was only going to make this Engineer exactly the same as my others, so deleted it.

But what would make me make another?

1. reversion of the trait system, or making the acquisition tasks suitable to their tier level
2. a new profession (don’t care about races)
3. restriction of Ascended to Exotic stats or elevation of exotic to Ascended. Maybe if there was a way to transmute exotic to Ascended at maybe 5 transmutes per change…

Bonus chest[edit]
After completing certain events, characters level 39 and above will receive a bonus item of rare or exotic quality, in addition to being able to loot a boss chest. These items will appear with a chest icon in the lower-right portion of your screen. For each event, your account can only receive one such bonus each day. The UI will display up to three unclaimed chests, including the ones from map completion, the daily, or the monthly. If a fourth bonus chest is earned while the first three float in the UI, it will appear after you claim the items from any of the first three. Any additional bonus chests beyond the fourth one will be automatically accepted into your inventory when you exit the game or enter World vs World.

The Bad:

Pointless removal of content such as mini games and low level environmental weapons
Marjory and Kasmeers awkward les-be-friendship
Bad VA choice for Marjory’s sister

Dumb reasons why you can't play a class/race

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: GuzziHero.2467

GuzziHero.2467

I wouldn’t say dumb but I have reasons why I cannot play some races and classes.

Norn
They look utterly stupid when running (that slow jog business) plus Cube Root Law makes them physically unlikely if not impossible. Yes its a fantasy game, but I can’t get over that. Plus, in real combat, that size would get them killed quickly.

Charr
The 4 legged walk looks stupid, their hunched shape would mean most would be crippled in the spine by age 30, plus the size thing again. The clipping issues are also seriously bad.

Necro
Boring playstyle. And I really don’t like the entire zombie/animator of dead style.

Elementalist
Too weak on defence. I had to go elehammer and full PVT armour just to keep the thing alive. Only good thing: I was able to salvage my Runes of Strength when I broke her down to delete her.

Mesmer
Clone clone clone shatter phanta phanta phanta. Boring. And why can Mesmers dual wield pistols while Warriors cannot? :p

Guardian
Slow, short ranged. Great for group play I guess, but I dont play in groups.

But what is an ‘expansion’? It’s like saying ‘how heavy is a marble’, there is no quantifiable amount or value you can put on that.

Also, when you see the graphical detail in GW2 compared to most other games, what we have in DT and SW, work-wise, probably amounts to an expansion for other games.

I’m more disappointed that they seem to be taking away as much as they are giving, but I’ve beaten that dead horse for so long, I turned the thing to paté.

I really can see where Anet has beein going with the Living Story Concept.

This isn’t WoW where you can release an xPac and people are still buying it 10-15 months down the line, because they have 7 million players. If you released a traditional xPac here, the hardcore would have it finished in a couple of weeks, the casuals in a month, and then everyone would come on here giving a collective ’I’M BORED’.

For me, the LS concept sort of keeps the game fresh, but we have to appreciate that with a game that looks as stunning as GW2, you cannot keep adding things over and over on a 2 week schedule. It is just too much work.

I would prefer it if they collected the LS episodes into pairs and released them monthly. I mean, I finished episodes 5-7 in a few hours. If I had unlocked them individually, I would have taken maybe 2 hours on each and been bored for the rest of the day.

Thats my opinion though. I just can’t see an xPac being big enough to satisfy many of us for long. We’d probably expect it to be the size of all of Kryta just to hold our interest for long and that just is not possible.

They are usually very good at this sort of thing. As long as he has all the details to hand, there should be no issue.

Well, to make them more desirable, they could possibly make spear and trident legendaries interchangeable with staffs, spearguns with rifles.

To be honest, I don’t really know why there needs to be specific underwater and land weapons at all. I can understand a torch being unusable underwater but then this is magic… you still get Elementalist fire skills usable underwater.

I couldn’t agree more with the OP. Restrict them to 30+ zones at least so that those with sub-31 characters who have not unlocked all 4 daily options can have a chance at success.

I mean, yesterday in Bloodtide, enemies that spawned were dying before I could land grenades on them. In Queensdale it is abysmal.
