You’re talking about Doc Howler right? That is one I DID have difficulty with – I just outlevelled her and got her. In fairness, not all new players would think of that.
Otherwise, I finished almost each story part first time and I am far from the sharpest knife in the drawer.
I admit, this is one of the few story missions I struggled with. I was using an elementalist however and I was useless at playing it.
Isn’t this the one where by choosing a particular dialogue option, you can avoid the fight altogether? Cant remember how I finished it.
Good grief.
I am an aspie and I have completed the personal story on 2 alts. Only twice did I have to leave instance, level up, and try again. One with thief in Orr and one with weaksauce lvl 9 elementalist.
Folks who cannot beat these missions with a correctly levelled character are either using weapons/armour way below their level, are aged 14 or younger, or have some serious ADD.
Edit: ossuary of Unquiet Dead boss impossible? I had more problem with getting to him than defeating him with my thief (my warrior took a different path). If I remember, I got him first time with maybe 2 deaths, and I am dumb as a brick.

Look at latin names for poisonous plants.
E.g, I have a sylvari named Leveillei (anemone leveillei is the woodland anemone plant).
Thing is, if you go thief you can get the Piratey themed armour skin from the web store. It looks great apart from the mask.
I agree with this. I remember taking my second character (not even the same species) through and getting to the artillery part… realising it was going to end exactly the same way, and hating it.
I’d like to have a rebel who refuses to join any order. After all, later on you are supposed to be unswayed or unbiased, yet you are a member of a powerful order with it’s own goals and agenda.
I even thought last night how cool it would be to have a character join the separatists…
Wow, that was deep!
Okay, maybe some of these people complaining should just watch Youtube videos of someone else playing. That is my point, I guess. The game is meant to be engaging and interactive. Not very interactive if the enemies all roll over and die for you.
Thats the kind of mentality that makes people pay for cheats for games. Wanting all the reward for no effort.
Also, if you complete Zhaitan below level 80, don’t you miss some part of the reward?
This is a game. A game is supposed to provide challenge. No challenge, no fun. Imagine seeing Tim Henman just volley balls from a serving machine for hours. Or watching Sebastian Vettel drive an entire F1 race on his own. Maybe watching someone pack sandwiches in a factory is more your thing, although is there a little bit too much challenge when the plastic wrap machine runs out of sellophane?
If you really don’t like dying, consider it as an ‘injured’ or ‘forced to retreat’. Or just level yourself to WAY past the story mission’s difficulty and faceroll it with exotic gear.
Why does EVERYONE want stuff handed to them on a plate? Life contains challenges, your character’s life should, too.
WASD for movement. Left and right click default (target and turn)
Mouse (Logitech G600):
G9/Gshift G9 = attack 1/7
G10/Gshift G10 = attack 2/8
G11/Gshift G11 = attack 3/9
G12/Gshift G12 = attack 4/0
G13/Gshift G13 = attack 5/nothing
G14 = F1
G15 = heal
G16 = F2
G17 = F3
G18/19 = DPI up and down
G20 = F4
Simples.
I solo’d my first character and maxed it before I even considered joining a guild. Map completed it too, everything except Arah story.
Solution: Join Dragonbrand. Join Blades Of Oblivion clan. We rule!
Dragonbrand or uninstall :p
Dragonbrand for sure.
I really really love my Mad Memoires, Complete Edition, but I can’t use it. Why? The Spineguard I got for completing my story has an exquisite jewel and without the benefits it gives, I lose one or two points of crit chance.
If I could Fine Transmute the exquisite jewel into it, I’d use the MM all the time, but as it is, it just sits in my bank looking pretty.
Please let me put a better upgrade into my bookpack!
True that, actually. I’ve only been there once (I hate WvWvW) so I forgot that one!
There’s only one JP I know of which requires light, and thats Sharkmaw. You’re a ranger, equip the cheapest torch you can buy in the TP. You won’t face combat in there.
To clarify:
Bank. Left bar there’s a square made of dots. Click it. Mini Pets are at the bottom.
Same here, I waited to see if the prices for stuffing would decrease. Well, yes it did but I still can’t justify over 1g for something that had no game effect.
Should have sold my glue when the price was still good.
Unfortunately. that’s normal. When I changed from Forest Spider to Jaguar, I had to change the pet name from Incy Wincy to Ex Jay Six. Changed it back, had to change the name too.
Asura.
Oh and Karka.
Ah, at the time of writing, I had only experienced defeat through falling (I always complete non combat zones to build exp). Lick Wounds is indeed very useful. Is it supposed to work even when my pet is downed? :o
… a mechanic where pets could revive us if downed/defeated? I think this would make the ranger class a lot more popular and useful. I’m not talking about a Phoenix Down sort of effect, but to have a healing rate of, say, half the ranger’s normal healing rate?
After all, there have been cases where a dog owner has had a heart attack and, in what it thinks is the act of defending its master, the dog has prevented medics from helping its owner. And yet, in GW2, as soon as you go down, the pet just… abandons you?
A second wondering of mine took me to the idea of fighting stealthed enemies. If a quarry just disappeared in front of a searchdog, the dog wouldnt just shrug its haunches, say “Rye Ron’t Row. Shraggy” and give up. Wouldn’t it at least stay in the area till the next clue was found? So why can trained pets not stay where they are till the enemy de-cloaks, and then resume it’s attack?
Just a thought…
My jungle stalker is named Trichy Business. Not sure if its funny or not.
Seriously? SERIOUSLY?
You expect to replicate/mimic some totally chibified cartoon armour? Sorry thats just… wow. That’s so daft I have run out of words to describe it…
Tyria Today, Divinity’s Reach Edition, excerpt from a piece titled “Security And Insecurity Within Tyria”
In Ebonhawke, the very prospect of peace has started a new dialogue between the seperatists and the Council of Ebonhawke. With the Council having, under duress, pre-signed an agreement to allow the Council to be constructed of a 50/50 split of those who support Queen Jennah and Separatists, it would only take a pen on the other side of that page to form a coalition government.
Many Separatists who have been forced to stay away from Ebonhawke in exile due to the pro-Divinity’s Reach stance of the officialdom, have managed to visit their former home in peace. Several parents who have not seen their own children for years have been able to spend the holiday season as a family. There is an uneasy tension, similar to that found in places where civil wars have come to an end, but the Vanguard have been able to quell the few altercations which have taken place.
It is a time of peace, for now, for all mankind in Ebonhawke. The Charr living in the region, however, are more than a little nervous…
I thought it was funny as all heck when BP took Stonemist this morning. I was in BP BL and someone came in saying “Theyve taken SM”. “HOW THE HELL did they do that?”. “Stomped in with 6 golems”.
We took it back, but it did amuse me
I found beating an lvl17 SP with an lvl21 with all lvl21 gear impossible. 7 attempts later, I rolled a mesmer. (Then got bored of it!).
Flux, I am in England and I highly recommend you NOT to join an EU server. Go US for sure.
Dragonbrand is amazing, friendly folks who don’t mind helping you with advice and resurrections. I tried 3 guilds on 3 EU servers, left them all within days. Met a group in DB and don’t ever wanna leave.
TBH I think Ele is a bad choice for a newb. I had 2x Lvl 80s (Thief and Warrior) and I couldnt hack Eles. They are complex to play (I’d recommend a mouse with a LOT of buttons!) and very weak on defence.
I have run an lvl 80 thief and a lvl 77 warrior to the gates of Arah. Rule is: when going through hell, keep going. Don’t stop!
Thief, I will drop Caltrops, Ambush, Thiefs Guild and if needs be hide in shadows to get them off my back. Warrior, I just keep jogging using Battle Standard or Signet of Rage to a burst of speed if I need it. Really dreading taking a weakling Mesmer there though.
I do get completely frustrated by the boredom of travelling through Orr. You can’t get your daily done because you only fight Risen and a small scattering of other things.
What I would do is run through as quickly as possible, grabbing waypoints as you go, and then use these to explore at your leisure.
Every time I read Caladbolg, it makes me think Salad Bowl. I can’t be the only one, right?
Dragonbrand rules in all areas
Join us… be one with us…
And it will auto-select the one bad guy/thing you DIDN’T want to aggro…
[[Oops, sorry if I stole your fun! I thought the 2 hour deadline was fo’ realz and figured that Ebonhawke would have to act fast to prevent the assault]]
Cheers! I might give it a try for when I get bored PVE levelling my current main.
Just for fun, I am thinking of trying an experiment… starting with a new character and not doing ANY map or storyline completion, simply taking it into WvWvW and trying to level that way.
Is there any reason why this would not be possible? Has anyone done this and can give me tips?
Cheers.
[[But then the Mayor of Ebonhawke would be forced to pursue an alliance with the Seperatists who indeed have a strong presence in Ebonhawke. This may smash the Renegade/Separatist pact, although whether this would be enough combined force to hold back a Renegade assault remains to be seen.]]
[[A letter is sent by courier to the Separatist leader]]
Office of the Mayor of the Stronghold of Ebonhawke.
The Council of Ebonhawke is highly concerned at your intention to band alongside Charr to assault a human City. Your own callers within Ebonhawke continually remind us of the horrors inflicted upon our people by the Charr, and now it appears that you wish to unite with them in an attack which would most certainly bring about deaths of many citizens. I remind you that many members of the Separatist movement have families within our walls. By assaulting Ebonhawke with our old enemies, you and your men may be putting your own mothers, fathers and children to the sword.
We implore you, explicitly, not to agree to this insane plan which would see Ebonhawke fall, your own numbers weakened through a senseless siege, and which would leave the Renegade Charr in a position to destroy you and to take Ebonhawke for itself.
If you consider the lives of your own people, and the future of humanity, then the Separatists will unite with Ebonhawke against our true common foe!
Please find enclosed a draft document which, when agreed upon and signed, would grant your movement the right to elect half of the members of the council of Ebonhawke, thus ensuring a strong all-human pact to defend the Stronghold from this current threat, and all that may threaten it in the future.
The council eagerly awaits your reply.
Yours faithfully,
Josh Rogan,
Mayor of the Stronghold of Ebonhawke
Solo-ing, I find the staff pretty much useless.
Part of my frustration is that the clones which are supposed to absorb attacks for me, usually do not. Thought that was the point of them, but constantly the enemy ignores them and attacks me anyway, even if I stealth after deploying them.
This means I end up having to use the mesmer as a weak adventurer, closing to melee with s/p.
Well now I think about it, I think after levelling 2 characters to 80, I may be getting bored of the zones rather than the character.
Didnt know I could deposit money in the bank. Obvious, really.
I have only taken my thief through Orr and generally thats a case of…
Run. Using a signet that grants swiftness.
Get attacked/chased? Lay Ambush.
Still getting chased? Thief’s Guild.
Desperate? Hide in Shadows.
But always, always keep running!
Well… I came into this game having only ever played one PC game before and having never played an MMORPG before. I levelled my first character (a thief, ironically) in about 5 weeks of casual play.
They are a bit squishy, even with lvl 35 gear, my mesmer has more HP than my lvl 80 with lvl 80 exotics. You just need to choose your fights more carefully.
Do not attempt group events alone. Just… don’t. They will reward you only with tears and pain. When doing other DE’s, don’t rush them. You get a reward even if you fail, so use shortbow to break down the enemies into bite sized chunks, eat, go back for seconds.
I find pistol/pistol to be effective versus single opponents, sword/pistol and shortbow against groups.
You’re playing an ele? I tried an lvl 16 SP with my (then) lvl 22 Elementalist and got beat down time after time!
Give us an idea of what professions you are running, we may be able to suggest some tactics and weapon loadouts that could help.
Office of the Mayor of the Stronghold of Ebonhawke.
Dear Sir,
It has come to the attention of the administration of the Stronghold of Ebonhawke that due to a legal matter now proceeding, the Arcane Council of Rata Sum is considering renegotiating all Asura gate contracts serving human populated regions of Kryta.
We are sure that Secretary Trappi, and the remainder of the Arcane Council, are fully aware of the precarious situation that this would force upon Ebonhawke. The Arcane Council will of course be fully aware that our only link to other regions of Tyria via Asura Gate is that which we have between ourselves and Divinity’s Reach. They will also be aware that Ebonhawke has a contract for lease and maintenance of that gate which has been pre-paid and is not due for expiration for another year.
We hope that the Arcane Council will contact us with details of an alternative agreement whereas the gate located within Ebonhawke will allow for transfer to another city, should they feel the requirement to cancel or renegotiate their agreements with Divinity’s Reach.
We look forward to your reply.
Yours faithfully,
Josh Rogan,
Mayor of the Stronghold of Ebonhawke

Please do not link us to Rata Sum! The sudden change of altitude does a real number on me.

Cheers for the reply!
In the low level areas, where your vit is reduced, 4 gift toys can just massacre you.
Particularly them kitten golems, since they all use stun repeatedly so you cannot move, you cannot fight, you cannot do anything. You are just dead.
Hi, and welcome to GW2!
To answer your questions:
1/ Press H for Hero menu. On the right of your character image you see some stats boxes, below that is the area for your trinkets, and then there are 3 boxes for your gathering tools. You can double click or click and drag the items to the relevant boxes.
2/ Consumable is a one-time usage, usually a timed ‘buff’ which gives extra experience points, healing or similar. These should state their function and time they last for if you hover over them with the mouse. Other consumables offer services such as Transmutation Stones which allows you to combine 2 items to customise them as you like them. A trophy is just that, it has no game function and can be sold at a merchant (marked by a stack of coins on the map).
3/ Soulbound means that it is bound to that character. Some items are soulbound on acquire (such as story mission rewards), others are soulbound on use, and there should be a warning box to ask if you want to bind it. If soulbound, it cannot be transferred or sold.
Accountbound means that it can not be sold, but can be transferred between characters (alts) on the same game account.
The bank, you find it by its yellow icon (usually in safezones), walk to it and press F or doubleclick the bank NPC character. You can transfer items, including accountbound, from one character to another using the bank.
Thought they were pu*t*rifiers? As in putrid aka rotting?
I posted up before that Orr is very boring, and you have to leave the zone to get your daily kill variety, and got lambasted that anything else would be counter-lore. 2 maps consisting of 95% Risen, and another map with probably 40% the same? Gahhhhhhhh!
I decided to make a character of each class… so I have a thief, a warrior and am levelling a mesmer.
However, I now feel I have made a mistake with the mesmer. I am completely bored by the weapon limitations (as a soloer, only S/S, S/P or GS make any sense), and the utility skills seem to be a bit naff. I think instead that I should have persevered with an elementalist.
Are there any hopes of being able to change profession that anyone knows of?
Sylvari: their androgyne nature makes them interesting to me.
Human (x2): because I am one.
I have absolutely no interest in playing Asura, Norn or Charr. The former strikes me as poor comic relief, the middle as just big humans, the latter as physiologically impossible ugly things.
First thing I thought of when it started speaking.
The punctuation, the politely spoked death threats, they even used a voice actress who sounds pretty darned close to Ellen McLain.
In the words of Tom Lehrer:
“Plagiarize!
Let no-one else’s work evade your eyes!
Remember why the good Lord made your eyes,
so don’t shade your eyes,
But plagiarize, plagiarize, plagiarize…
…ha ha ha but always to be calling it, please… "research""
