WvW is about fighting better, dancing with a melee train, and then dropping a meteornado on their head and watching em drop. You’re pitted against other players who are trying almost everything they can to stop you, and you need to use misdirection and tactical opportunity to your advantage.

It’s incredibly satisfying to take advantage of a distraction, like a fight inside SMC to swoop in and paper a fully fortified tower that the enemy server spent hours defending and upgrading, especially if you’re outnumbered or “outskilled” by your opponent.

I’ll bait enemy servers into killboxes, and I have the satisfaction of tricking 50 players into filling my bags.

WvW is a place to practice your synergy between your players in an open environment against organized groups. For me it has absolutely nothing to do with who wins or who looses, but a place to practice your weaknesses and capitalize on your strengths in any way possible.

Hey folks,

I’m curious what everyone does for gold within WvW. There are a few ways that you can make gold in this part of the game, all of them less effective than PvE. Although, I’m still curious as to what folks to do produce some shiny.

In order:
Silk (from discarded garments) 4-5G per week ( 500-750 scraps)
Rares (mostly GS and Staff, salvage the rest for ecto)
Contents of Embroidered Belt Pouches
Spikes

Now I could probably make a killing if I sold Superior Siege on the TP, but I choose to use it instead.

Quite stale.

For me, The only thing that keeps me playing the game is my guild, and helping to train new people in Wubwub ways.

I think that map diversity is what we need, what we want. Here was my big idea on that front.

next thing I’m developing which comes with this is a plan to hook WvW into the LS, similar to how the EotM release was a part of the evolving story, even if it hasn’t seen a blink of development (story, bugs, map design) since.

The way I figure, and looking back at how Anet has put “sweeping change” into the the game, (like the destruction of Lions Arch) any opportunity to get real devpower to focus on WvW will require it to be a part of the expanding Living Story.

Image/Iwarlock/Staff clone bolt speed laughably slow. make it move at magic bullet speed.
Nerf PU so that they get 1 boon every 1.5 seconds instead of every second. Give a boon if stealth ends in the middle of the 1.5 second icd.

Full zerker shatter mesmer should be able to kill a super tank regen warrior. Right now, for the most part we cannot without leaving up 3 phantasms, if you can keep them up which ruins the whole “shatter” part of the mechanic.

Make Glamour skills viable.:
Null field: Corrupts boons, not just strip them. Even without adding damage this would level the playing field with the necromancer Well of Corruption. Doesn’t need to convert conditions to boons. let’s not get out of hand.

Feedback: Reflect Projectiles, Boons applied within the feedback field turn into conditions

Reduce cooldown on Arcane Thievery.

Make Illusion Trait line buff BOON DURATION instead of Condition Damage

Remove the clone mechanic from iLeap. Its the only kitten thing that’s ever going to work.

Redesign it to work exactly like Shadow Shot. Press the button, poop out a clone at your starting location, appear in a flash of butterflies at your target and immobilize.

Why on earth it would “need” a counter is a mystery. A Thief has instant skills with no cooldowns and no counters. Oh the horrors that a Mesmer would actually have a working skill on one of his weapons (the melee weapon on a light armor class no less).

the tears would be so prolific that people would mistake it for rain.

all you’ve described is people who are moving together to make getting loot/exp more efficient. The way you’re talking about it makes it sound like they NEED the help killing the veteran and capturing the circle, or tower or keep, which simply isnt the case. Go roaming and put yourself in a 1vX situation. In my experience the people who go looking for 1v2, 1v3 and 1v4 fights are much scarier than the TPvPers that i know.

Personally, I assume swapping with a dead Clone was a bug so I’m fine with the change in general (I really don’t care about the on-going hen-egg discussion regarding tooltips). However, taking the whole circumstances into account it probably was the wrong decision to change the skill without improving its mechanic. iLeap already had severe terrain issues. Now using it is just plain masochism considering how unreliable it has become and how easily it is countered.

I’d like to see at least one of the two following changes:

  • Clone being invulnerable for ~1s
  • Clone spawning at the target

Yes, this would mean countering the initial Clone spawn would be harder. But seriously, it is just a short Cripple. It shouldn’t be a big deal. Those changes would simply ensure that the swap can actually be performed with a sufficient certainty.

This would be great. Would mean that the iLeap would actually be functional as the skill is intended to be.

Find a pull spot. some common ones

EB:
Golanta- eastern side of the supply hut. LoS pull to the corner.
Rouges – around the rock dropoff
Dane – up around the corner of the ramp that takes you “above” the camp

Borderlands:
SW camp: behind houses, either one from spawn or the one from the sentry (left from the archway)
S camp: Behind house SW, or in the crack between the house and the ridge directly south of the camp
SE camp: by the little hut that you can jump on top of with the baskets next to it. pull to this.
NE camp: corner of the supply hut and the big rock ( Dont hit the quartermaster or the Supervisor until they’re the last two NPCs up and you will not proc the “Defend the Supply Camp” event until you’ve put one of them in combat)
N camp: pull around the corner of the structure East of the supply

Once you’ve pulled the guards, KILL THE KITTENING SCOUTS. those kittens projectile AND AoE blind you, so you need to kill them first, or your DPS will be 1/2 or 1/3 of what it should be.

Once the scouts are dead, it’s pretty easy. Dont forget to use food buffs.

I’ve been trying to solo roam more and more lately. Most of my time i’ve been either pugmanding, zergbusting or teaching people how to do one or both of the previous things.

I’ve been trying to train myself to play better, so I’ve been roaming on a full zerk shatter mesmer GS S/T. No cheese, just damage. Even then, there are a few builds that i simply can’t beat. Like these absurdly high healing super tank warriors. can barely get those kitteners below 75% health before they shout-heal back to 100.

I dont really get into many fair fights, often I’ll start a 1v1 and it will end 1v3 or something similar. I reallllly dont like PU, although i understand when it’s useful.

It would be so much easier for them to just automatically disable comments on threads older than 30 days than to bother to ask the community to change their behavior.

I think we should definitely help figure out how to reward scouts. I dont know if there’s a “loot” way to do it or if donation is the way to do it. Either one could work IMO.

Enter Tower – Begin scouting – Leave area around tower 25 minutes later – receive green + 2-5 silver for protecting the tower and area. Bonuses if all dolyaks which passed through the area around the tower survive their journeys, and all sentries are your color.

1: you do not need to be in TS3 to play the map, and PPT. If you want to win ZvZ fights however, you will want to have VoIP

2: Yes. I carry a stack of everything, and about 50 supers of everything at any given time. I use 1 super ram and 1 regular ram on paper gates, supers only on reinforced gates.

If you want to defend against map queue, you NEED superior defensive siege. regular siege does not have enough stopping power without building an absurd amount.

3: ask backseat drivers to keep their suggestions to /w. If they are just being critical and not helpful, then tell them to shut up or tag up.

4: Leading in EoTM would help you learn how to manage supply, but not much else.

5: Watch the map. Sentries moving, Yaks disappearing and the flip timers should give you a good idea of what is happening anywhere on the map. If you know the two other servers are engaged, fighting in stonemist for example, go hit an upgraded or inner tower like Ogrewatch, Jerrifers or Bravost. Map politics are about controlling where your enemies go and what they do. If there’s a waypoint in both SMC and their keep, and the third server has them occupied in SMC, lay siege at their keep and force them to pick which waypoint to save.

6: you need them. If no one is in your corner how do you know if your keep was tapped, or if there’s a golem coming up the water gate.

These folks are often your most stalwart tower and keep defenders. treat them well.

7. Yes. I loose a lot of respect for commanders who give up after wiping once or twice. In WvW you will die a lot. If you are not able to direct through voice, (where to bomb, when to dodge, pop stabilities, condi clears, water fields etc.) then you need to be extra careful about where you take your zerg. most people will take a few seconds to realize you’ve moved. Command through /S chat to get the best reaction time from people. Most of the time you should be able to maneuver around without bumping into the enemy zerg until you need to get past them into your tower.

Mostly you need to focus on hitting objectives that are not too hard. If you have a very small group, like less than 10, focus on controlling supply camps and ninjaing the odd tower here and there. Controlling supply is often underestimated by new commanders. If you can keep their camps flipping and their yaks dead, you WILL be able to whittle down their supply reserves, and when they’re dry, you can take their towers (and possibly keeps) with minimal resistance. Don’t rush to hit big objectives, build momentum and feed your zerg with champ bags and loot, and it will grow.

8. It does not take a lot of experience to lead a map for PPT. Lead people to supply, and lead them to an objective. Learning siege placement takes a while though. Don’t forget to get on high ground and use a ballista to destroy enemy siege if it’s giving you a hard time. Catas are extremely versatile and 2 super catas(with masters) are faster than rams on a paper wall. Watch the tick timer, and time your defensive holds and ninjas around the tick timer. If your whole corner is paper and gets ktrained by a map queue, but you can flip all 4 towers back before the end of the 15 min tick, then you’ve effectively lost nothing.

9: You can tell most of the time. If half your zerg dies on the first push, you should probably bail. If the enemy is holed up in a heavily sieged tower or keep, and they’re just waiting for you to come in, build a treb and destroy their siege(supply and numbers allowing). Try to avoid walking into a killbox. You need to pick your fights based on how quickly your zerg responds to commands, and how well you know they can fight.

11: IF you’re watching two other servers fight, then yes. Pick your fights carefully. however, you are where your team is focusing damage. so you are leading the charge. Like lioka said, you need to manage your team’s positioning. If you dont have enough to come out of a fight intact, then don’t go into the fight( 10v30 not always the best idea)

12: Don’t get flustered or worked up because you’re getting hammered or loosing stuff. c’est la vie. focus on having fun, and keeping your zerg together.

Guilds in WvW whonever put on a commander tag

Not everyone wants to zerg WvW like EOTM. When I roam I don’t tag up because I want to duel and just have fun. Same goes for a 5 man party, up to guild raid. If I want to spam 1 and karma train, I tag up.

It’s also not always the best way to be successful to zerg everything like in EoTM. Sometimes you need to dangle a big slice of your zerg in front of a keep, make a lot of noise and orange swords, while a small team of 5 chews through the gate with golems on the other side of the keep.

Splitting a 30 man zerg into two 15 man groups to assault two towers/keeps at once, and making the defenders choose one of the two if they don’t have enough folks to defend both.

both of these are good techniques to use in wvw that don’t scream for 45 people PVDing a paper gate down in 90 seconds.

Guilds in WvW whonever put on a commander tag

When the action on a BL is light there is no need for a tag. You see something that needs to be done and you do it. I stick to our home BL and represent our little guild of 2 people, the wife and myself. If there is a push on a keep or tower and they call for people I will go, tag or no tag. If there is a camp to flip I will flip it. If there is a tower to capture I will set up a cata myself and start hammering away, eventually people will come over or I map call for help when the wall is down.

Too many people are sheep and need the tag to be effective. I do not have a tag, neither does the wife but there are many times we will have half a dozen people following us because we do what needs to be done. If there is a ktrain running we normally avoid it and go capture camps or other objectives, set up siege, refresh when needed, repair as required. Do not put yourself in the position where you need to be told what to do, find things that need to be done and do it.

Is core a zergy guild?

Not TOO zergy. Our comfort zone is 20-25 players, but we’re frequently running 3 parties of 5. We only rally to zergbust or roam (depending on the day of the week, and the number of people online) for a few hours each day. The rest of the time we’re spread throughout the borderlands and EB.

That said, we will push you to improve when we’re zergbusting, and to take those skills with you when you follow other commanders and drivers. I have trouble envisioning a day when CORE runs more than 35 members at once. We enjoy the challenge of taking down a larger zerg, not being the larger zerg.

Decreasing condi duration needs a cap

Honestly, I think it’s a good thing power builds are forced to sacrifice DPS and condition builds have their damage reduced through power builds using condition duration reduction runes/food.
Condition builds have a lot of tankyness and can deal high damage over time. Power builds are squishy but can kill a player quickly in 2 – 3 hits sometimes. But because a lot of people will use things that reduce condition duration, they’re not able to kill people in 2 – 3 hits and condition builds can’t overwhelm people. Which means both builds are taking more time to kill each other thus is balances out. Conditions can’t overwhelm you and power builds can’t kill you in 2seconds flat.

Problem is: Power damage is reduced by toughness. Condition damage don’t have a counter stat… Even with all the reduction you can get from melandru+lemongrass, Condition builds still have the upper hand as they still have a stat that counter your damage while you do not have a stat to counter theirs…

Valid point, but in my experience it doesn’t matter if you have 1,000 or a 10,000 toughness high DPS builds will cut through you like butter.

my personal take, you can go balls-deep full zerk in all PvE environements.

Shatter is fun in PvE, and it helps you learn the class, but it’s not the EASIEST way to play PvE on mesmer. Phantasm builds (still full zerk) are going to be the best for full blown PVEing (possibly not dungeons and fractals, but definitely for open world PvE)

Death reign is right, the Iwarlock hits like a semi on world bosses, or that one guardian who foolishly used “SAVE YOURSELF” in a zerg.

However, if you want to get better at dodging, and mastering your class, you want to do shatter.

You can use staff as a Power weapon, It has impressive clone generating ability, and is a frequently used Defensively focused weapon for shatter mesmers.

Chaos storm + phase retreat for a clone and chaos armor. you’re gaining boons constantly and if your enemy is in melee range they’re very susceptible to a shatter, and you are easily able to put a gap between you and them.

I would not suggest hybridizing by going into rampager armor. I used to run a rampagers set, and eventually I just gave up and went full berserker because I enjoy the shatter play style. for shatter, using staff is more about positioning and buffing yourself than doing damage.

The release notes haven’t been updated yet, but the health of the Tropical Parrot was reduced by 50% in today’s release to bring it in line with other summons such as the rock dog.

We’ll keep an eye on it for now and reevaluate its strength in the future if need be.
