Logic dictates that the best time would be something like 19:00-22:00, as that will be the peak moment of people being online. Thus, the PvP system has the largest pool of players to select your match-up from at those hours, which should lead to the most balanced matches. However, I have no clue if this is also the case in practice instead of only theory.

I wouldn’t run curses trait line and I definately would run Marauders amulet over Demolishers. Many variations on this build are possible, but yeh its nice to play. Keep it up.

I lost most of my matches this season (I didn’t play much yet) just because of a few horrible teammates. I am not a pro or anything (but I feel like Im pretty decent), but I can feel the gap between skill of players in the same match easily. As many others stated before: PvP became more of a lottery where you have to hope you have the better team. I don’t expect my team mates to be pro or something, but I think it is my right at my skill level to expect that thieves don’t play d/d condi and only fullcap, and other such nonsense.

Frost trap adds weakness, dmg increased by 100%, longer chill duration.
Vipers nest dmg increased by 100%, poison duration 50% longer.
One trap needs to get a stunbreak.
Add an elite trap.
Bit shorter cooldown on healing spring.

I was around rank 100-150 (MMR of 1900 or so) at I think halfway last season. Then I lost like at least 20 matches in a row, but probably even more with an occasional win now and then. I was even in upper gold tier for a short period of time, to end the season in lower platinum. Ofcourse I made mistakes while playing, but not to cause such a massive loss streak and heavy drop in MMR all of a sudden. I really had no idea why this happened, and I often felt that I had some very bad teammates as well. It was quite frustrating, and it resulted in not giving a kitten anymore about rank/division/MMR.

Apologies. “Ignore him” was a quick and poor choice of words on my part and came off as harsher than I intended.

I would like to poke at your notion that a limited build won’t (or can’t) improve your gameplay though. If you go into a fight and your build has a known weakness, you should be watching for and dealing with or avoiding those times when it’ll hurt you the most. You’ll gain the skill to mitigate that problem, no matter what skills/traits might get nerfed. If you play only meta, what happens when the build is no longer effective or carries you?
For example; if you’re less mobile (shortbow 3 and sword 2 are great BTW), you have to consider more of where you should be as it takes more time to get there. And that map awareness is a skill that carries over to all classes.

But I will agree with you. Fun > Effective most of the time.

Ofcourse there is a truth in there, but I think otherwise. If you choose a trap build as a ranger it is for example an incentive to afk on a node. That is something that a lot of beginners do, and which is essentially wrong. You basically get forced to play that way when you play a trap build with sb + sw/t.

Also, if you’ll be pushed by 2 enemies you’ll die. If you get pushed by 1 enemy that is either very bad or doesnt run enough condi cleanses you win, otherwise you most likely lose. There is almost zero form of outplaying the opponent with this build.

If you go close at start you are going to fullcap it, and then what? You’re too slow to move to far, and you don’t have the survivability nor the stability or group support to participate at the teamfight in mid. You’ll be forced to afk on the close node, and you can only hold it in a 1v1 against enemies that are vulnerable to condi’s. If you like this, you should duel somewhere in an arena, not playing a full 5v5 match.

Ignore him. While there will always be builds that are the strongest on paper, what is “viable” depends on your skill level vs. the skill level of your opponents. If what you have works, great! If something in particular is giving you trouble, maybe adjust your build to account for that.

I ran condi Ranger (not even Druid) in Season 5 and was climbing steadily as appropriate to my skill level. Here’s what I was running LINK
Sure, it has its weaknesses. But as you play a build you learn to play or build around them. In my case, I needed more help with conditions so I took deadshot, rune of melandru, and nature magic. That combo helped me outlast many opponents, even if it isn’t necessarily a bunker build.

‘’Ignore him.’’ If you want to get better at PvP, do not run this build as it won’t learn you to improve your gameplay. If you just melt some enemy players because they don’t expect you to run this build, its fun. But this is more based on luck than anything else. You are not mobile, you melt in team fights, and other classes fullfill your role in better way. Your possibilities are so limited with this build, that you’ll have to play PvP in a very specific way, and that way will not improve your gameplay.

But again, having fun is more important.

If you want to make the necro more survivable, you need either a decent escape tool or reliable condi cleanses (not transfers). The best way to get rid of condi’s now is to transfer them, but that means that they can be missed/dodged/blocked. Our access to stability has been significantly improved which is good, and our stunbreaks have been improved as well.

I even used celestial amulet succesfully on necro lol. Basically all classes were able to use it effectively except thief, so claiming that only Ele used it is bs. I don’t want to see the amulet back in pvp. We need less can-do-it-alls instead of more. Implement more specialized amulets instead.

When you use the trait Spectral Mastery, the spectral armor utility receives a longer duration and a shorter cooldown. However, the minor trait ‘’Spectral armor’’ (also Soul Reaping trait line) does receive a longer duration but not a shorter cooldown. Is this intended?

They could fix it in one foul swoop by getting rid of the amulet system for stats. Give us 3000 points to implement where we want to and you now have so much flexibility.

This system is essentially much more logical, but won’t be used in this game. I would love to see something like it, but I won’t.

The balance at the moment is quite oke, with every profession being played in PvP. However, the build diversity falls behind heavily, and this is something Anet doesn’t do anything about. They never improve old traits and utilities. Not even some simple tweaks. They could try for example to move Unholy sanctuary to the Blood magic trait line. Maybe it works, maybe it doesnt. But a disaster it won’t be, while it is a disaster right now. They need to grow some balls instead of giving a 5 sec cd reduction on spectral wall. I mean, that just illustrates how they really don’t have an idea to improve core builds.

Balance doesn’t mean much though. It is more about making the game fun and building hype. This is done by making new specs and trait lines viable. There is no esports anymore so balance risks can be taken now.

Balance does mean something, but the rest I agree with.

Anet invests too little resources to keep PvP attractive. Build diversity and this boring hybrids thing has been an issue for far too long. Old trait and utilities and weapons never get rework. It takes way too long for some marginal balance updates. However, the balance at the moment is not so bad (basically every profession has a viable build). Its just boring, and you get a lot of the same matches. Upgrading professions to have at least 2 different viable builds in pvp would already be a huge step for improvement.

There might actually be more truth in your topic title than you intended. There are a bunch of things that are overpowered, mainly HoT things, which cause general vanilla traits/weapons/utilities to be underperforming. If they nerf everything it might actually result in some good balance and more build diversity. Theoretically then :P

I’m just trying to understand what youre saying. it sounds like you think thief’s only value is decapping and +1ing.

’’Only’’ value would be a little exaggerated, but yes, that is by far the thing that thief is the most valuable at. Other classes are less mobile, don’t have stealth and are better in holding/winning 1v1’s, so it is generally much better to let them do the 1v1’s. It is almost always a waste of time if a thief is doing a 1v1, because its mobility is not being used. Besides, there are a lot of professions that a thief should lose from in a 1v1, such as engi, druid, DH.

You are showing some WvW footage in a PvP discussion? Thief’s value is not in 1v1’s in PvP. This video does’t have anything to do with that.

This thread is a shining example as to why we need to be able to see PvP rank badges in the PvP forum. So much misinformation.

Biggest one being people saying thief is bad in 1v1. Now there’s a surefire way to advertise your bronze level MMR if there ever was one. Have you even faced a single Legendary/Plat thief? Do you even step foot in the 1v1 dueling servers? Just because you only face bronze/silver thieves who die to stupid kitten like shield bash doesn’t mean the class is bad.

Although a thief generally shouldn’t go 1v1 in PvP. Mechanically they might not be bad in 1v1’s (however there are a lot of bad matchups), but in terms of usefulness thief might be at the bottom of the list of 1v1’s.

If you can’t win an on-point 1v1 as a condi warrior vs a druid, you’re just a bad condi warrior. There is nothing more to it.

I was doing okay lately, but tonight I ran into a buzzsaw of just flat out bad teams.

Did I play perfect? Nope, but I’m not legendary caliber enough to carry teams so I lost 8 out of 10 games tonight with multiple games losing -20 rating while my wins are only giving me +10-11.

Basically had the same. Dropped from 1890 rating to under 1700 xD. I get teamed up with necro’s that use spectral wall and other bad players. Apparently I can’t carry them (maybe my class also isn’t quite perfect to do so), but I know for sure that most of the players I get teamed up with are worse than me. Out of ten games last night, I lost nine I believe. I mean, come on. That’s not even random anymore.

They made it so that Spirits can’t move anymore. When spirit builds were a thing, the spirits would follow you around. By this nerf, but also because of other things, spirit builds aren’t viable anymore. Maybe you can figure out a build that involves 1 spirit like I did, but that will be about it.

1, It clearly isn’t fun. Its all spam. Every class is spam. If you disagree you are lying to urself.

Not so much agreeing on this. But there are so much passives though…

2, There is nothing to play for. The season goes on for years and playing isn’t encouraged from a leaderboard perspective.

There is more incentive than in the other seasons. Altough the system that places different ranks and DuoQ vs SoloQ in a match is still far from perfect.

3, A ton of games are ruined by ESL mesmer/thief duo queues pushing far and insta moa someone and then snowball the whole game 5v4 from there.

Hmm yeah. Its just a good tactic you know. But I would say that a SoloQ-only system might work better. DuoQ’ers can carry much better than SoloQ’ers, so if your team doesnt have ESL players, and the opposite has 2, the chance that youre gonna lose is way too big. Although many people give up such a match way too quick.

4, There is zero build diversity. It is clear what is best.

Strongly agreed. Very boring. The only class with very limited survivability seems to be thief. 1 class out of a range of 9 classes is way too less.

5, If you try to run non-meta you often get utterly shrekt because the power creep is so insane that all the meta builds are broken. GL with running a non-meta spec and surviving thieves and mesmers

Also agreed. Elite specs need to be toned down, or vanilla traits/skills must be upgraded. Preferably the first. We need LESS stuff flying around, instead of more more more.

6, There are no amulets. So it was broken with tanky amulets because engis and mesmers and rangers never died right? Well how about nerf the broken sustain traits. It kills build diversity so much to remove all the amulets. I really don’t understand the lack of a sentinal or cleric amulet and instead we get 100 variations of the same amulets. Breaking the game because of these dumb traits is not a reason to remove amulets. It is a reason to nerf these traits or just to accept this game is a failure pvp wise.

Oh yes please. Paladin, Marauder, Menders. Thats about it, apart from a few condi builds you see here and there. Utterly boring, there is no build diversity. The game didnt want the old school ’’triangle’’ of healers/ranged dmg/melee dmg. But now only builds that have something of everything will flourish. There is no reason to ’’specialize’’ in a certain way; condi, raw dmg, healing, boon support, etc. It makes your character generally weaker, and therefore the build diversity is so limited.

7, There is no communication help. No pings to say you need help. Nothing. Just a complete failure.

Hmm I don’t know. This is maybe not in such a bad state.

8, No new maps. So the game has been out 4 years and skyhammer is the only new map in ranked in 4 years. Awesome. I hope on the reviews of their 4 years of work the anet management see how much of a factual failure this is

I would rather have Anet to invest time and effort in the issues above, before they make a new map again that will be only in unranked forever.

9, Perma evasion – its not very fun trying to hit people perma evading/invuln. Maybe try and design combat in a way that is fun for both parties.

Agreed. Blocks also. Basically they should remove nearly all blocks and all unblockables. Then you get a rare occassion that an attack will be blocked (good for everyone) and that a block won’t get interrupted by unblockable attacks all of a sudden (good for people that actually can use a block).

10, Tiny community – you play the same people over and over. It is boring. You sit in a queue for 4 minutes and then it pops vs exactly the same people you just played with. So that 4 minutes was just a total troll.

Hard to solve this problem, but its true. Maybe if they solve other problems first, the population might return to pvp.

To become a better mechanical player, dueling is the best practice. Play normal matches to get better in terms of rotation/where to go, etc. Mesmer is a good class in PvP, you can stick with it. Although I would recommend to pick the metabuild from metabattle.com
It is harder to play well with a non-metabuild if you are a beginner at pvp. For now I would say: focus on dueling to be able to win your 1v1’s. If you are good at this, good rotation will be the next step.

I have exactly the same experience. Good winstreak brings me to top ~75, but a few losses later I’m back to 250 or sometimes even out of the leaderboard. I basically only soloQ atm. Also the difference in losing 15 to 20 MMR when I lose a match compared to gaining 9 MMR when I win a match is also a bit though.

I feel that I belong somewhere in the top 100, so if I lose to an enemy team with top10 DuoQers or something I can live with it; they are just better than me. But often match losses for me are caused by an awful teamcomp or just one or two awful players in my team. I won’t yell at them or call names like many other people seem to do, but it can be very frustrating :P

Their mobility is good but thats not the problem I think. I think that stealth is more problematic.
