Macro'ing Left Click to Scroll wheel?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Healix.5819

People have been using click macros and the scroll wheel trick since day 1 without any problems. If you’re not botting, exploiting or cheating, it really doesn’t matter.

Officially, the macro policy is 1 key press = 1 action. Each scroll tick is technically 1 key press, so there shouldn’t be any problem.

Officially, a short while ago they okayed the use of complex macros to automatically play instruments, stating that if it’s not an unfair advantage, they’re not going to ban over it. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/audio/Sad-truth-of-playing-the-ingame-instruments/first#post4546267

Can you get banned over it? ArenaNet has the right to ban you for any reason at any time regardless of what you’ve done, so saying you could be banned isn’t exactly wrong.

This is not another “my ping so low, QQ, ANet WTF, gimme my dollars back” situation. There are in fact a lot of people having serious lag spikes problems since the latest November’s patch.

The problem with network related lag is that there are many different possible reasons, some of which you’ll never figure out.

Here’s an example. A few years ago, I played an MMO and had no lag issues. Roughly 10 minutes after entering a PvP match however, the game would begin to lag and eventually lead to a disconnect. After logging back in, the same thing would eventually happen regardless of what I did. What was wrong? Everything else ran fine. I could still login and play other online games without any issues. It must have been their server right? My ISP was flagging the MMO’s traffic and throttling the connection which was causing the issues. As a result, I had to force an IP change every time to fix it.

If you lag only in a specific zone and everyone else is also lagging, yes, it’s probably a problem with GW2, such as the 161 server. Keep in mind that you need a good sample size from various people around the world. If everyone is lagging but everyone is on the east coast for example, that could just mean the main routes on that side are having issues, whereas everyone on the west coast is fine. If you lag everywhere, chances are there’s a bad router somewhere between you and ArenaNet or your ISP is throttling you – which is something they’re not supposed to do and will not admit to. If GW2 was lagging in general, everyone would know it because everyone would be affected, but this usually only happens after hardware failure or lack of hardware to support the player base or during a DDoS attack.

If an ISP says the problem is not on their end, that means nothing. From what I’ve seen, they only care if its a problem on their actual network, otherwise, it’s not actually their problem.

If you actually want to begin to debug any lag issues, you’ll need to run a tracert as well as get a good sample of pings for each hop. There’s nothing you can really do against throttling however, except use an encrypted VPN to tunnel the connection.

Your security software may have multiple exclusion lists for different components. Specifically, you will want to disable sandboxing if available and add an exclusion to your firewall for CoherentUI_Host.exe. What security software are you running (anti-virus and firewall)?

ERR_ABORTED is a standard connection error, meaning the connection was interrupted and closed. In this case, it’s actually a Chrome(ium) error since CoherentUI is based on it. If you first started encountering this problem back at the start of September, that’s because they switched from Awesomium to CoherentUI.

There are a few other reasons besides security software that may cause this.

But first, a simple test. Open the folder where GW2 (Gw2.exe) is located and delete the bin folder. Open the %appdata% folder and delete the Guild Wars 2 folder. Open the %temp% folder and delete every folder that begins with gw2cache. Lastly, delete Documents/Guild Wars 2/Local.dat if it exists. Go back to the folder with Gw2.exe, right click it and run it as an administrator. Test it.

Continuing on,

Open the Control Panel and open Internet Options. Under the connections tab, click LAN settings. Uncheck all the boxes and click OK.

Open the start menu and search for cmd. Right click cmd.exe and open it as an administrator. In the command prompt window, enter the following commands:

You can copy/paste by right clicking the command prompt window.

First, verify that you can ping the trading post:

ping tradingpost-dfw-live.ncplatform.net

Open https://tradingpost-dfw-live.ncplatform.net/humans.txt in your web browser to verify you can access this simple text file with dev names.

Next, reset Winsock and TCP/IP:

netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset

You can close the command prompt window.

Open the start menu and search for notepad. Right click it and run it as an administrator.

Open the file: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Every line should either start with a # (a comment) or be an empty line. Anything that isn’t is remapping a domain’s IP address to something else. If you were able to access the humans.txt file earlier, you don’t need to do anything, otherwise, verify that any GW2 related domains aren’t be overridden.

Reboot your computer.

Open the control panel and internet options again. Under the connections tab, click LAN settings and verify that everything is still unchecked. If something was checked, you have software on your computer that is modifying your internet connection, such as proxy software or a virus.

Disable your anti-virus and firewall. Be sure to disable all of their components. Disable any proxy or VPN software and any other network/internet monitoring or filtering related software you may be running.

Open the folder where GW2 is located, right click Gw2.exe and run it as an administrator.

If it still fails, press WindowsKey+R and open msconfig. Under the services tab check hide all Microsoft services and then click disable all. Under the startup tab click disable all. Click OK and reboot. This will cause all non essential programs and services to be disabled. Undo this after you’re done by doing the same except this time clicking enable all.

If it still fails, uninstall your security software by first checking for any specialized removal tools they may offer. Some software for example creates a mess and can’t simply be uninstalled completely by normal means. If it still fails after all that, you should probably reformat and re-install Windows, because your system is likely corrupted or infected.

If it worked however, re-enable anything you disabled one by one to identify what was causing the problem.

In GW2, PvP in PvE is WvW/EotM.

PvP in actual PvE is never going to happen outside of specialized zones because it goes against one of their basic design goals – a player should never not want to see another player.

Resetting winsock basically breaks anything that was hooked into it, such as firewalls, web monitors or viruses. You’ll need to uninstall/re-install those programs. If your web browser was configured to access the internet through those programs, since they no longer can, it no longer can.

First, open the command prompt as an administrator and enter the following commands:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /flushdns

Reboot and test.

Open the control panel, select networking and open connection/adapters. Right click the adapter that is your internet connection and select diagnose/repair.

Did you do what I said to do previously after renaming it to Gw2.exe? Excluding Gw2Setup.exe for example isn’t going to work, because if you run it, it simply downloads Gw2.exe to your %temp% folder and runs that, which is what you would have needed to exclude.

For simplicity, let’s start over:

Make a folder on your desktop and name it GW2 or Guild Wars 2 (or whatever you want). Copy Gw2Setup.exe into that folder and rename it to Gw2.exe. This is simply for security purposes and you can move the folder to wherever you want later. If by chance you do not have enough space, create the folder in a location such as C:\Guild Wars 2\. Right click Gw2.exe, select properties and look at the bottom of the general tab. If it says that the file is blocked and came from another computer, unblock it.

Try running it. If it still fails, add Gw2.exe as well as the bin folder (or CoherentUI_Host.exe) as an exception to your security software. I’ve tested Avast Free edition and it doesn’t seem to cause any problems. However, try additionally disabling game mode and all shields. Are you sure Avast is your only security software? What about your firewall? What components of Avast are you using exactly (if not a basic free installation), what version is it (2015 is the current), and what is your OS?

If that fails, right click Gw2.exe, select properties and select the compatibility tab. Check “run this program as an administrator” and “run this program in compatibility mode”. If you’re using Windows 8, try Windows 8 compatibility mode and then Windows 7.

If it still fails, run Windows Update until you are fully up to date. You may be required to manually check for updates multiples times if you haven’t been keeping up to date.

Normally, this is as far as you need to go to fix the problem. Going further is entering basic debugging territory.

If it still fails, I’m assuming you have another program on your computer that is blocking it, so you’re going to disable everything. Press WindowsKey+R to bring up the run dialog. Type msconfig into the box and press enter. This will bring up the system configuration. Under the Boot tab, check Safe boot and select Network under that. Click OK and reboot your computer. This will start your computer in safe mode and all non essential programs will be disabled. Try running Gw2.exe. Open msconfig again and uncheck safe boot to disable safe mode. Keep in mind that you may not be able to access the internet in safe mode. If you’re using a firewall other than the built-in Windows Firewall or if you have any other network monitors, they will be disabled which may cause your internet to hang.

If safe mode worked, open msconfig again and under the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services at the bottom and then click the Disable all button. Under the Startup tab, click the Disable all button. Click OK and reboot. Your computer will start without any unnecessary programs, the difference being now your security software will be enabled as well as a few Microsoft services. Try running Gw2.exe. If it works, you’ll need to go through your startup programs and services one by one, re-enabling them until it doesn’t work to find which one is the problem. If it doesn’t, your security software is likely the cause, rather than one of Microsoft’s services.

If safe mode didn’t fix the timeout problem, keep in mind it may cause other problems, re-installing Windows is your fastest option.

Give me something to do that takes some skill, but can speed up the fight significantly if I do it right.

Run a glass cannon build? You’d even get to see 1 shot mechanics if you’re not one of the higher base defense classes.

I ran through it again just to make sure on the times. As an elementalist, both the troll and the teragriff took 3 minutes +/- 10 seconds, the troll being a few seconds faster, even though I was constantly chased by swarms. Considering I’m also running terrible runes/sigils from the magic find days, don’t use consumables and didn’t optimize anything, I wouldn’t doubt if sub 2 minutes would be possible, maybe even 1. I also just realized the runner achievement was still ticking away at ~5 minutes left, so I guess the entire run took ~10 minutes.

The troll is pretty basic, but the teragriff changes every 10-20 seconds. How was the teragriff bad? When I did it, it practically did a different mechanic after every charge, only repeating the fly by and room AoE. If you tried to melee it or were wearing defensive gear, it would have taken a lot longer and repeated its mechanics multiple times, but the same would happen for every boss.

Compared to the last living story, those bosses were 100% mechanics and were tedious. For those, I was basically running around doing nothing while waiting for stuff to spawn.

10 minutes? I recall them being maybe half that. If they nerfed their health to a point where you were capable of killing them in just a few minutes, people in DPS builds/gear would kill them in a few seconds.

The troll was pretty bad for a final boss, especially when compared to the teragriff. It was basically a regular troll with more health and a random don’t stand there thrown in. The teragriff felt like it should have been the episode’s end boss. It had various mechanics, so I wouldn’t call it tedious.

“Timed out while creating browser context” is generally caused by something blocking Gw2.exe from executing CoherentUI_Host.exe.

Disabling security software isn’t always enough. Even uninstalling isn’t always clean.

COMODO is a common problem for this error. If you have it, disable Defense+ and Sandboxing. If you’re running something else, look for a feature called HIPS, sandboxing or something that involves application execution prevention and add an exception for GW2. You may also want to disable any game or automatic modes that your security software may have, as these prevent the confirmations from appearing.

Deleting the bin folder (located where Gw2.exe is) and running GW2 as an administrator may also fix the problem. If you’re using Windows 8.1, also try running the game under compatibility mode.

They use hitboxes, just like every other game. The complexity of the hitbox is the only thing that really changes. For example, the hitbox of a basic character is a simple rectangle. In a shooter however, the hitbox is composed of several rectangles, one for the head, chest, arms, etc.

The Teragriff has long claws sticking out from its sides.

At the end of 2013, they also said it was being pushed back. Items that were related to the scavenger hunt were also added to the game files, but never used. They probably cancelled it and decided to implement it only for the new legendaries. It’s generally not a good idea to change how something expensive is acquired. People are going to complain either way. Also, considering their intended for dedicated players, I doubt it has any priority.

Yes it does, for debugging purposes. I assumed it was 64.25.38.161, but GW2 uses more than just 64.25.38, so I thought there could be more than one, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

While hopping servers a few days ago, I got onto the 161 server in Silverwastes and experienced the lag spikes. Chat was also commenting on the dreaded 161 server. I didn’t bother testing the connection however (ping, wireshark, etc), but from what I saw, the server would stop sending packets every few minutes, though it would still receive them. It’s likely that the server either has bad hardware, a bad configuration or is simply overloaded. It could just be a rarely used overflow server (compared to the others) for example, so they might not have a big enough incentive to fix it.

With the megaserver, there is no point in guesting any more.

Guesting influences which megaserver you’re put on in the same way your home server does. Of course if there’s not enough people throughout the entire game playing on a certain map, there’s only going to be one instance available. With an active zone like the new one for example, you can guest to different servers to get into their megaserver.

Worlds aren’t tied to any specific physical server but rather various different ones. When a physical server is experiencing issues, every instance on that server is going to lag.

Wow if everyone is lagging, then I should be to but I’m not, so everyone is not lagging.

There is at least 1 server with stability issues that causes people to feel like they’re lagging. The server basically stops sending packets for a few seconds every few minutes, resulting in a lag spike or a disconnect.

I encountered it a few days ago. The IP ends in 161 and others have complained about it in the past. If you find yourself on this server, simply switch to a different one.

If dungeons scaled, there would be a lot more interest in them and as a result, more resources would go into them. A WoW-like dungeon finder that dumbed down the content so that it was intended for 5 random solo players (like open world content), would also increase its popularity.

Story dungeons specifically should offer a solo mode and be put into the personal story as an optional gap filler between chapters. It would add a lot of content for the average player.

Boxes aren’t needed as just about every online gaming magazine writes an article whenever Anet releases a new LS episode or feature update anyways.

The one thing an expansion can do that the living story can’t is generate interest outside of the game’s existing player base. A new shiny box on store shelves also has the added benefit of attracting casual people.

Take WoW for example. I don’t hear people talking about the patches, though there might be a single headline on a gaming news site. With the expansion however, not only is there headlines everywhere, but it also generates a large amount of hype and is talked about all over, including here for example.

It’s simply a mindset people have. An expansion is seen as something new, whereas a patch is just a patch. Patches also don’t typically cause major changes whereas this is expected in an expansion, creating a sense of unknown and creating a lot more buzz.

Local.dat is located at %appdata%/Guild Wars 2/Local.dat and another may be found at Documents/Guild Wars 2/Local.dat.

The file does not need to exist to start the game because GW2 will create it. Rather than it not existing being the problem, GW2 is likely being blocked from writing to it. If the folder %appdata%/Guild Wars 2/ exists, try deleting it as a simple fix. More precisely, ensure that the folder hasn’t been set to read-only and that GW2 has permission to access and write to that folder. Run GW2 as an administrator as another possible workaround.

China’s VIP membership basically just adds extra convenience. They get a few gem store items for free as well as extra discounts. It doesn’t make the game easier. They also have to level their VIP membership by subscribing and playing, unlocking additional rewards, such as titles and unique perks like a personal revive and teleport. At the very end, they get a free precursor.

These old pictures pretty much sums it up:

The “Royal Club” is likely the VIP membership. Looking back, some people called it that. It’s not surprising to see it in the game files however since they both use the same game data, and yes, ArenaNet originally makes it in English and then it’s translated in China. ArenaNet already said the system wouldn’t be coming here and I don’t imagine they’d risk all the bad press.

If contribution actually mattered, people would put in more effort and less people would lay dead or AFK the entire event. The system in its current state is far too easily abused – hit a single mob and move on. There is no perfect formula however and the major contributor, damage, will only lead to complaints from players wearing defensive gear trying to argue their usefulness. Other factors such as damage taken, healing, reviving, CC and special mechanics can be fairly hard to measure and easily exploited.

If there was a contribution scoreboard, they could make it simple by calculating rewards based on the average. If you failed to contribute within a certain percentage of that, you should get nothing or heavily diminished rewards. The higher your contribution, the higher quality your loot roll should be, granting you more or higher rarity rewards. Unique exotics for example should have a higher drop rate and only drop for top contributors.

Unlike forced waypointing, this would likely destroy players that run in and die, forcing them to either get better or get nothing.

Very interesting facts about Ascended gear

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Ascended gear was practically demanded shortly after launch. “Dedicated” players beat the game, exhausting all traditional “endgame” content in roughly a week and exotics only took a day or two to acquire. There was nothing left to do and the next content update was more than a month away. Legendaries, cosmetics? Useless. In other MMOs, this is where dungeon grinding and raiding for gear would have taken place for several months. GW2 didn’t offer any of that.

ArenaNet was trying to appease the WoW/traditional player base. Combined with fractals, the idea was to create a long term grind. It wasn’t nearly enough to satisfy them however and I suspect that guild raiding will turn out much the same.

Being primarily from a WoW/traditional style MMO guild, that’s how I saw most of them play the game and quit within the first 1-3 months.

It’s really not surprising that ascended gear is for the most part useless. Now just imagine if they actually continued with it and added vertical progression through infusions like they planned.

Bosses should have a special aura that applies to defeated players. Under this aura, they should not appear defeated (revivable) to other players but as dead characters with no interaction. Once defeated, a timer should popup that forces a waypoint after a certain amount of time. If the boss is defeated however, the aura should dissipate and these players would once again be revivable.

For comparison, this would be like Frozen Soil in GW1.

I’ve seen far too many people refuse to waypoint, even if it’s right there. Why would you when you can AFK and simply collect your rewards. If only contribution actually mattered.

Low DPS players are also a problem, especially when it comes to timed events. When I can solo a group event faster than a group, you know there’s something wrong. I’ve practically solo’d (1 other person usually shows up) the troll (amber) and the thrasher (blue) for example, so when it fails, lol.

Events can detect that players have not performed any actions relating to the event within a period of time and will scale down the event accordingly.

This doesn’t seem to work. I’ve solo’d a lot of events and have seen both AFK players and players doing something else within an event area cause an event to upscale. Adds that have spawned during an event will also never downscale, although the main boss will.

When it comes to ambient griefing, it all comes down to who was there first. I’m surprised ArenaNet even bothered with that one person. One of the farmers was probably a GM. It’s not like a warning wasn’t given however, so feel free to do whatever you want with the critters until warned.

What should I expect?

1. What should I expect in Guild Wars 2,
2. What should be on the top of my Priority list,
3. Which Race/ Profession combinations are the best (In your own opinions)
4. What should I do as soon as I emerge myself into the vast world?
5. And most of all, what should I do to maximize the fun out of this game?

1. Expectations only lead to disappointment. People tend to have unreasonable expectations. Take it for what it is rather than comparing it to your imagination.
2. Nothing. You don’t need to rush anything.
3. The race you choose is mainly cosmetic. Some racial elite skills do help certain professions in specific scenarios, but it’s definitely not needed.
4. Pay attention, there are a lot of things you might not see at first glace. Events don’t always end when they say they do and if an NPC is talking, it’s usually good to listen. The game has far more detail than most MMOs.
6. Do not play the game like a traditional MMO. It’s not meant to be played like that. The “endgame” isn’t dungeons/raiding/etc but the journey itself. Play the game through the eyes of your character, as if you were living in the world.

Unlike every other MMO, the world isn’t filled with quests that you can follow. Events were meant to take their place and hearts, which are like simple quests, are meant to draw you towards these events. The personal story, and at 80, the living story, is the traditional story quest line of the game. Do not try to play the game by following the quests, in this case hearts, as you would in any other MMO. Simply explore and 100% the map to easily level throughout the entire game.

If you enjoy PvP, you will want to try out World vs World or Edge of the Mists, which is a more casual WvW. If you want more competitive team style PvP, there’s Structured PvP, where you’re automatically level 80 and the gear you need is freely available. In comparison to other MMOs, SPvP is like battlegrounds/instanced PvP whereas WvW is like open world PvP.

I’ve seen a lot of people simply not “get” the game. If you’ve played another MMO before, simply forget everything you’ve learned.

Why there's only 1 useful gear stat..

There are two different types of gear in the game when it comes to PvE. Offensive gear for those that know how to play and defensive gear for those that don’t.

In an action game, especially one that allows you to fully dodge attacks by simply taking a step back, tuning for total defense is pointless. If defense stats were actually required, just imagine how many people who are barely able to play now would simply fail. If healing power actually turned you into a legit healer, your only purpose in the current state of the game would be to carry bad players and if they actually tuned content to make you useful, a healer would become a requirement and we would be that much closer to bringing back the trinity. The idea behind groups in GW2 was that you could pick any random person and bring them. Your group might not be optimal but any combination was meant to be viable.

There will never be a solution for offensive vs defensive gear. The closest thing they could do is hybridize everything, for example, instead of making offensive gear 100% offense, make it 60~70% offense and 40~30% defense, whereas defensive gear was the opposite. Everyone would now be somewhat similar and full defensive characters as well as poorly played offensive characters wouldn’t be as much of a wasted spot.

Try repairing. Open the folder where Gw2.exe is located and enter Gw2.exe -repair into the address bar. Alternatively, right click a shortcut to Gw2.exe and select properties. Add -repair to the end of the target (example: Target: “C:\Example\Gw2.exe” -repair).

If that doesn’t help, try deleting the bin folder located in the same folder as Gw2.exe, the folder %appdata%/Guild Wars 2/ and the file Documents/Guild Wars 2/Local.dat. Your settings will be reset.

If you can’t start Gw2.exe at all, download the launcher and overwrite your old Gw2.exe. If that doesn’t work, place Gw2.exe in a different location to see if it will run at all.

They recently increased the minimum requirements to enable that option, automatically disabling it on low performance CPUs.

I don’t recall retaliation ever being a problem with them. The only scary part about them was getting jumped from behind and nearly getting 1 shot (Elementalist), which is still true. I recently exited a breach for example and had 3 of them instantly down me.

Most people play solo.

Your data?

“Most people who play solo” play single-player games. When you come to a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, you play with other players, want it or not.

The majority of players play solo. People want to login and play, not login and wait for groups. If the majority wanted to be forced into groups, leveling wouldn’t cater to the solo player and WoW wouldn’t have happened. If you want a source though, WildStar said that 60% of players play solo.

Solo players do play with other players, that much is obvious, but they do not play in a group with other players during regular play.

A simple ping isn’t really helpful. The internet is composed of thousands of networks joined together. When you send something to a server, it’s crossing multiple networks and if any one of them has an issue, you’re going to notice it. This is why someone on the east coast might be experiencing issues, whereas someone on the west coast isn’t. If it was a problem on ArenaNet’s end however, everyone would be encountering it.

What you want is a tracert to identify the route and then a good ping sample for each hop. This will help you to identify which network is causing the actual problem. However, there’s not much you can do with this information except complain about it. You can make your ISP aware of it, but if it’s not a problem with their own network, they tend to not care from what I’ve seen.

The pathping command can be used as an automated tracert/ping, but unfortunately it will stop prematurely on hops that do not reply.

A common cause for that problem is security software blocking Gw2.exe from running CoherentUI. I’m guessing you didn’t change or install any security software however, though you could have toggled to a more secure mode or an automatic/game mode. Try disabling it – specifically, features involving application execution/HIPS/sandboxing.

Try deleting the bin folder located in the same folder as Gw2.exe, then right-click Gw2.exe and run as administrator.

You may also need to reset your settings. Delete the folder %appdata%/Guild Wars 2/
