There could also be other apps running that is reducing your performance. Updaters and virus scanners for example will generally be configured to run when plugged in, rather than on battery power.

Is there a new skill unlock system now?

Healix.5819

You know, GW2 is supposed to be finding the way you want to fight and exploring the maps, and now Arena net is forcing new players to play the game their way instead of figuring stuff out which is what was fun in GW2.

Every other MMO teaches you to follow the arrows. People expecting the traditional experience couldn’t figure out how to play the game. These people expected to be able to quest their way through the game, just like in every other MMO. With this mindset and the refusal to change, the game was just another Asian grinder, which wasn’t surprising considering the game was made by NCSoft, which is Korean.

A majority of the changes made were to further ease the transition from the traditional mindset. Hiding map elements for example is simply a tactic to get people to notice them as they’re unlocked, and especially with the help of the content direction arrow, direct them towards exploration.

The weapon skill change really doesn’t matter. You unlock the first 3 skills in about 10 minutes and all 5 in 30-60 minutes. Being able to switch weapons without having to kill another ~30 mobs to unlock all the skills is simply better, at least for anyone playing normally.

FPS issue solved

After clearing everything, when do the FPS issues begin to occur? As soon as you open the trading post, after you list something, once you have an item to pickup, etc? Are the issues noticeable as early as the character select screen?

You can’t kill CoherentUI while on the launcher because the launcher’s interface is rendered using CoherentUI. The earliest point you can manually kill CoherentUI_Host.exe is on the character select screen.

When you say you reboot, do you mean you have to reboot the computer? Does killing all Gw2.exe and CoherentUI_Host.exe processes not work?

By deleting %appdata%/guild wars 2/, you reset your settings. In the past, your settings (Local.dat) could become bloated, which would reduce the performance of the game.

If you want to kill CoherentUI, you can do so by opening the task manager and ending its process.

“Timed out while creating browser context” is generally caused by security software blocking Gw2.exe from executing CoherentUI_Host.exe. Check your anti-virus or other security software and add an exception for Gw2.exe. The security feature may be called HIPS or sandboxing.

Gw2Setup.exe downloads Gw2.exe to your %temp% directory. You may manually install it by moving %temp%/Gw2.exe to the location of your choosing.

Didn’t want to reinstall the whole thing, so I downloaded a backup Gw2.exe someone uploaded. Client ran fine, update worked, and now in game.

If Gw2.exe was 0 KB, it likely crashed while updating. If you had a Gw2.tmp file > 0 KB, it’s actually Gw2.exe and was meant to be moved.

GW2 isn’t actually installed in the usual sense. Gw2Setup.exe just downloads Gw2.exe to your %temp% folder and asks you where to place it. To do it manually, you just run it, wait for the install button and move the file yourself. Alternatively, the original Gw2.exe can be located at http://cloudfront.guildwars2.com/client/Gw2.exe, though they now use Amazon instead.

Delete the contents of Documents/Guild Wars 2/, though just rename the Screens folder. This is an alternate storage location for logs and settings, as well as the location for custom music and screenshots.

Open the folder where Gw2.exe is located, delete the bin folder and any other files, excluding Gw2.exe and Gw2.dat. While in the folder where Gw2.exe is located, enter Gw2.exe -repair into the folder’s address bar and press enter. This will begin the repair process and will take some time.

What ArenaNet did was make the first 5 minutes of the game as simple as possible and play out more like a traditional MMO, since players expect to be able to quest like in every other MMO.

How many CoherentUI_Host.exe processes are there?

Having 2 of them is normal. One acts as the host while the other is the renderer, which is a child process of the host. When clicking play on the launcher, the host process along with its child should be killed and a new host process should start. After opening the trading post, a new renderer process should start, which should stay alive as long as the trading post is open. The host process should stay alive as long as the game is.

Watching the CPU usage of CoherentUI, loading the trading post uses roughly 1-4%.

Where is yours going wrong? If you have multiple copies, are they still using the CPU?

Personally, I’m not seeing any abnormal temperature rises when playing GW2. After cleaning, I’m assuming the 75C was your new 102C? That sounds about right for a max load CPU with stock cooling.

more punishing world bosses

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Healix.5819

I think the lack of trinity in this game is what holds it back at the same time.

Anet can’t make the bosses too hard because of the lack of tanks to hold threat and take aggro. Along with that the lack of healers to obviously heal and/or mitigate said damage.

No player has any defined roles which hurts this game imo and makes just about everything a zergfest.

The only thing the trinity does it make it easier for the majority – the DPS – by making the encounter predictable. The boss is always going to be primarily focused on that one player while everyone else just runs through their rotation, tunnel visions and dies in a fire. Remove that one player however and now the person with the most threat is the tank. This is when you use control to “tank” the boss, either through evasion or kiting. Any trinity encounter could be made into a non-trinity encounter, but everyone basically has to play every role dynamically.

What’s holding ArenaNet back from making this type of content is the majority. ArenaNet could however solve this problem by designing encounters where the majority could be carried by the minority by feature challenging mechanics that only need a certain amount of people to successfully complete it. Take Tequatl for example and imagine if a player could be swallowed to fight a Liadri-like encounter. When a certain amount of people succeeded, Tequatl would enter the weakened state, allowing for an alternative method. ArenaNet did somewhat try this style during the Marionette by allowing a certain amount of failure.

However Anet has achieved what they set out to do. Made an MMO that anyone can play expertly with little effort and practice.

What ArenaNet made was a casual-friendly game that is very forgiving to a point where you basically can’t fail. The people that put in little effort either hide in the zerg and never learn to play or die continuously. GW2’s average open world content is actually fairly challenging compared to what the average MMO offers.

Q: No direct trading between players?

Curtis Johnson

Hey guys,

The no face-to-face trade is a real decision and it’s primarily a question of trust (as many of you have noted). But it’s also a decision to protect players from scamming and protect the economy from black-markets. Let’s run through some quick examples.

1) Give something to my friend. – As several of you noted, target your friend, right click the item and select ‘mail-to…’. Done, this works in contact list, guild list, or in world anywhere without having to ‘meet’ them or ‘catch’ them.

2) Get a fair price for an item (anti-scam). – Because ALL trading goes through the trading post we can guarantee that highest bidder meets lowest seller and we can give every player the benefit of current market information.

3) Barter item-for-item. This is the grey area and also the most risky kind of trade because even with UI many items look alike in icon and many social engineering scams take place in this kind of system. It’s a risky trade environment which is why when you support it you have to have these multi-stage UI’s where everyone double-checks everything, and then eventually get’s lazy and stops double-checking and gets scammed anyways.

In the end we decided with super easy access to mail for trusted trades and trading post for untrusted trades that such a system wasn’t worth the risk, complication, and fragmenting the player market off of the trading post..

In testing we’ve found that mail is easier 90% of the time we’d want trade and the other 10% trading post is far safer and avoids drama and thing like random trade windows being thrown at you and lots of other unsavory hawking in game.

Hope that all makes sense.

… was the response in beta.

I don’t do Macs, but that looks like a graphics problem, as in a bad video card.

Looking up your specs, there appears to be a defect with early 2011 macbooks involving the graphics chipset. Do you only have the integrated Intel GPU or do you also have a more powerful discrete AMD GPU? The problem seems to revolve around the logic board that switches between the two GPUs or overheating that causes damage to the board. If you only have the integrated GPU, it uses your system RAM, so bad RAM could be affecting it, but I’m guessing you’ve already ruled that out, assuming you did an actual RAM test with a program like memtest86.

Leveling is a complete drag now

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Personally, I find the changes for the better. I always leveled the way the NPE plays out, so most of the changes are just a bonus while the other stuff doesn’t affect me. The only downside is now I can’t follow the personal story to decide on which zone I should go to next, since that step of the personal story is now in the next chapter.

Unlocking traits needs to change however. The implementation is okay, but the basic traits need to be obtainable while leveling and preferably without interrupting your leveling experience. Each trait needs to offer either a generic challenge that can be done anywhere or account for each zone at that level range as well as offer specific options for solo, group and WvW gameplay. To reduce the overload, all pre-grandmaster traits should unlock at the same time, for example, completing one challenge would unlock all #1 minor traits. Simple stuff like doing a specific heart, completing 10 events in a zone, doing a specific personal story step, killing 100 whatevers, cleansing or applying 50 conditions, reviving 50 people, dealing over X damage in a single hit, killing a specific dungeon boss, etc, should all be basic challenges. Grandmaster traits however should be more like a quest where you learn something from a master.

Well they decided to make this game similar to the version in China.

No. It was always intended and most of what they implemented was a source of complaints or even asked for by players around launch and beta. China was only used to test it.

Trying other drivers is the only remaining option, besides downgrading Windows. Try Windows 7, Vista, 8.0 and also the drivers recommended by Dell.

There were also new Windows 8/8.1 drivers released just a few days ago:

www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Others with the same problem reported that it started happening after upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1. You likely won’t see an actual fix outside of a Windows Update or new drivers.

The DHCP problem was always a sign of a compatibility issue between Windows 8 and either the router or the network card. Since you’ve ruled out the router, you’ve also confirmed a compatibility issue with your network card, which usually means bad drivers.

Guild Wars could have been named after anything. It all depends on what they started with and only the original founders could truly answer the question. They are called ArenaNet, so I wouldn’t be surprised if their original concept for the game was focused on PvP, hence the name.

As for the lack of GvG, that simply comes down to numbers. GvG is like a minority (PvE vs PvP) of a minority (random vs premade).

Not even probably. 150 were simply moved to another map. That’s not a routing issue. If it were, they would have been disconnected.

That behavior is what happens when an instance is flagged to be closed down. In comparison, when an instance crashes, you’re kicked out and receive an error message, assuming volunteering hasn’t changed that. Volunteering occurs when not enough people are in the instance. At that point, the instance begins a 1 hour countdown until it is closed down and everyone remaining is automatically moved to the next available instance.

Either they just happened to join an instance that was already being closed down, there’s a bug involving volunteering or the instance crashed.

When the time comes, they’ll probably release one of the other continents as an expansion. At that point, I would expect to see vertical progression in some form.

The problem with adding the old maps is just that. They’d be adding entire maps to the game that you’re only going to see a few times. This would bloat the file size of the game, costing them more in bandwidth per download. They also have to keep in mind the system requirements.

Depending on how their instancing works, it may also not be very efficient for them to create instances for rarely played maps.

And no, the dragon isn’t “two years dead”, not for new players.

In the game, the dragon is considered dead. They decided this with the recent living story season and added a calendar to show it. Everything involving the Pact has been considered to have already happened, so you’re basically reliving the events from the past (GW1’s approach) when you play through it now.

Although none of this will matter to a new player, it’s the world’s history.

New players have to unlock PvP to access it, unless they know the workaround, so these unlocks probably aren’t going to change. If you have a higher level character already, you could wait for them to fix that problem with unlocks, but it would be much faster to simply unlock them again yourself. Simply create a new character and run through the hearts. It takes around 30 minutes to get to 6.

You don’t need a fresh install, it’s just the easiest starting part point when debugging. You basically want to strip away everything that’s not required and work from there. The problem with pre-installs is that they generally come packed with a lot of garbage software, and rather than allowing you to install it yourself, they hide a backup partition that can basically be used to restore your computer to how it arrived. The easy way to do a fresh install without actually doing it is by disconnecting your hard drives (for safety reasons) and installing Windows 8.1 (trial) to a flash drive. (you don’t need to do this)

Looking back, yes, it matters that the other computers are Windows 7 and yours is 8.1 (I just noticed you’re 8.1×64). Looking around the net, your problem is rather common and appears to be a compatibility issue introduced in the 8.1 upgrade. There is still no definite fix, but what has worked for some others (besides what you’ve already done) is completely uninstalling any 3rd party anti-virus/firewall software and using downgraded drivers – including drivers intended for Windows 7/Vista.

Swapping network cards should fix it, unless the problem is a software conflict or the new card uses the same chips as the old one and it’s a hardware/driver compatibility issue.

As for the DHCP issue, others have reported the same problem with 8.1 and that router, although it works with 7 and 8.

If your computer is failing to obtain a dynamic IP, that’s another problem and using a static IP is only a workaround. Do the other computers use DHCP?

If yes, check if the router is setup to support enough DHCP clients or is set to filter clients based on their MAC address. The number of clients is usually displayed directly along with the IP (192.168.0.X + Y clients) or as a range (192.168.0.X to 192.168.0.Y).

If no, I’m guessing they all had the same problem obtaining an IP?

Under services (WindowsKey + R > services.msc), ensure that the DHCP client service is not stopped. Reset your adapter to obtain an IP automatically and in a command prompt, enter the command:

ipconfig /renew

This will show you a result compared to having Windows do it automatically. If it still fails, disable all security (firewalls, anti-virus, network/application monitors, etc) software and try again. If it’s an option, you may also want to limit your network down to just your computer and the router, shutting the router down for ~30 seconds before doing so.
___________________________________________

If you still must use a static IP, ensure that your router and static IP are both using the same subnet mask (255.255.255.0). Since you are using 192.168.0.110, you should also ensure that your router’s DHCP is only set to use up to that IP.

Under Control Panel > Network and Sharing > Network Adapters/Connections, right click your adapter, select properties and under the list of what the adapter uses, uncheck IPv6.
___________________________________________

I’m assuming your internet was down (couldn’t browse) when you used the ping command.

By pinging 8.8.8.8 (Google’s DNS), that showed that the problem involves looking up the domain name. To further confirm it, you can next time try the command:

nslookup google.com

For completion, also try pinging google.com. In your browser, attempt to visit http://google.com then http://74.125.224.72. At least one of them should work.

Under services (WindowsKey + R > services.msc), you can also try stopping the DNS client service and trying again. Turn it back on after. This services keeps a cache of DNS records. You may also try the following command which clears this cache:

ipconfig /flushdns

Did you also try disabling/enabling your network adapter after it stopped working, or was a full restart the only fix? You can also use the Diagnose option (right click the adapter) to quickly run through several options.
___________________________________________

Under Control Panel > Network and Sharing > Network Adapters/Connections, right click your adapter, select properties, click Configure and select the Power Management tab. Uncheck the option to turn the device off. (just in case)

Under the control panel, open Internet Options, select the Connections tab and click the LAN settings button near the bottom. Assuming you don’t actually use a proxy server, all of the checkboxes should be unchecked. Automatically detect settings is usually checked by default, but it is not needed unless your ISP is defining a proxy. Check this again when your internet stops working.

If it stops working again, uninstall McAfee and any other firewall/security software, excluding the default Window’s Firewall. Disabling them isn’t always enough because they are still usually hooked into the system. I wouldn’t expect something like McAfee to be the cause (if it’s up to date), but it’s still a possibility.

Before moving on to bigger problems, I’m assuming this is your personal computer that you setup yourself. If not, look for any limiting or unrecognized software that may have been installed. In your case, software that disables “the internet” after X minutes or Y bandwidth.

Moving on to bigger problems, you could be infected by a virus that is quietly hijacking your DNS or adding a proxy server to your system.

The simplest solution is to do a clean install of Windows without being connected to the internet (for security reasons). Install only drivers and nothing else. This will rule out all software related problems, meaning the cause will either be the router or your computer’s hardware.

Don't care anymore. Delete thread!

Previously, you would have complained about having to grind in between each step. If you simply followed the personal story, eventually it would have become too high of a level for you to manage. This was a rather common complaint from people expecting the traditional quest-based experience back at launch (trying to play the game like WoW).

Now, you complain about having to grind in between each chapter. Splitting the story into chapters was meant to stop the previous complaint. Each chapter tells a specific story, so there’s really not much of an awkward stop in terms of story telling. The chapters do however create another problem by creating an awkward flow while leveling due to having to backtrack both within and between zones.

If the personal story scaled to your level, you would be complaining that the next step is in a zone too high for your level and that you completed the entire personal story by level ~30 and were now forced to grind out the rest of the game. What you really want is for levels to basically be removed entirely, either through scaling the entire game or by having each chapter award enough experience to level you to the next.

I’m assuming the other computers can access the internet while you can’t. If not, the router is being overloaded and needs to be reset. I used to have a router that did this after having 500 active connections.
_____________

For starters, you can reset Winsock and the TCP/IP stack back to their original states. Open a command prompt as an administrator (search for cmd under the start menu, right click cmd.exe > run as admin) and enter the following commands:

netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset

Next, uninstall your network adapter, but first obtain the latest drivers from the manufacturer.

Open the Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center and select Change adapter settings from the sidebar. Select your primary adapter, right click it and select properties. Take a note of the adapter’s name. Click the configure button, select the Driver tab and Uninstall. Reboot the computer.

On startup, Windows will detect the network card and attempt to install it. If asked for drivers, choose the ones you downloaded. If you are not prompted to select the drivers, open the Control Panel > System and select Device Manager from the sidebar. Expand Network adapter and select the one you noted earlier. Right click it and update the driver.
_____________

The next time it happens, open a command prompt and enter

ping 8.8.8.8

If you do not receive a response, it’s not just a DNS problem, you’re failing to send/receive. Next, try pinging your router’s IP. That will determine if you’re still actually connected or not.

Assuming you’re using DHCP, try renewing your lease.

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

This will just determine if your router is dropping you as a client.

Under the control panel, search for adapters and select View network connections under Network and Sharing Center. This will display your available network adapters.

Disable and enable (or repair) your primary network adapter. This will basically turn it off and on. It’s possible to overload a network interface which will cause it to simply stop transmitting. This is generally either caused by a hardware limitation or bad drivers.

If you had more than 1 network adapter enabled, you may also want to disable the others to prevent them from becoming the default connection even though they’re not connected.

If you have more than 1 physical network adapter, you may also want to swap which one your cable is connected to, in case the other is faulty.

The Charr Blood Legion story also (still) has a kill him or let him go option.

fyi, it’s an OS level error.

As shown in the error log, it’s failing to write a file to the directory: C:\DOCUME~1\Tin\LOCALS~1\Temp\bin\

Ensure that your C: drive isn’t full (needs at least 50 MB) and that you have permission to write to that directory.

The problem with tutorials is that the people who actually need them tend to ignore them. Only forced and hands-on tutorials will get the job done, but then people will complain about being forced to do them.

Many of the tutorials you mention could simply be added to the game in the form of loading screen tips. Since the player may be staring at the loading screen for a few seconds anyways, they might as well put a rotating tip on it.

As for a combat tutorial, it should be worked into the personal story itself. A downed/rally tutorial was originally a part of intro boss fights, but it was never actually explained to the player and was removed early on.

Is this some new setup?

No. Back when they announced the removal of glory boosters for example, some people had days worth of time after using them all.

Try deleting %appdata%/Guild Wars 2/Local.dat

That’s where your settings are stored.

The new player changes are mostly the result of complaints, most of which I remember from back at launch.

Shifting the utility and elite skills by several levels doesn’t really matter in the big picture. Utilities received the biggest level change, but all they did was smooth them out compared to when the elite unlocks. Due to the increased 1~15 leveling speed, the amount of time spent to unlock those slots is roughly the same. They did say they were going to adjust them however.

People complained about the lack of progression when leveling up. As a result, now we have the unlocks.

People complained about how long it took to unlock all their weapon skills, especially Elementalists. Level gating them was actually one of the suggestions at the time. It might take a little longer to unlock all 5 slots now, but it’s much faster to unlock all 5 slots on all the weapons. A lot of people didn’t even have all their weapons unlocked by 80; underwater weapons especially. Considering how bad some of the classes have it with their starter weapons however, they really need to start with 2-3 skills.

People expecting the traditional experience complained about the lack of it. People expect to be able to quest their way through an MMORPG. What happened was these people were only doing the personal story and hearts, which simply wasn’t possible. These people felt like they had to grind to keep up with the personal story due to the level gaps between each step, and in order to level, they had to complete multiple zones for the hearts.

The compass is obvious. People are so accustomed to following the arrow, that they don’t explore. The compass is basically a 100% map completion helper, which allows you to keep up in level instead of having to go to another zone, which was a common recommendation back then.

Some of the unlocks are only visual and are causing misinformation. Dodging, vistas, gathering, the TP, WvW, SPvP, Asura gates, equipment slots and whatever else are all available without having to unlock them.

Some of the unlocks don’t make sense however. Skill points for example shouldn’t be locked and instead simply be hidden from the map like vistas. Elementalists shouldn’t have to wait so long for all their attunements.

And taking away the train runs for Champions. Why was that so necessary?

From the low level zones? Yes. Champ trains were hurting new players, though some liked it. Some people thought it was cool, while others became biased towards what GW2 had to offer, thinking that was all there was. Some people even got sucked into it and ended up doing only that to level 80. Chat harassment towards those not following the “rules” was probably the biggest factor however.

Trading Post Error?

I even set up Google’s DNS, and re-installed.

Did nslookup return a result?

If it did, and the trading post is returning the error, your security software is the cause. Check your firewall or any other security software and add an exception for CoherentUI_Host.exe. It may be a feature called sandboxing or HIPS that is the cause.

If nslookup also failed, run through the troubleshooting section found on Google’s DNS page.

It’s simple spam prevention and is a feature commonly found in online services. Without it, I could buy and sell in quantities of over 100k per second which would negatively impact the trading post’s performance.

It’s simply to encourage you to spend more and buy more. If you have enough left over, you might buy something else or trade the gems for gold, fueling the exchange. Extra gems also encourages some people to buy more gems, because they know they have them.

ArenaNet also has to pay a small fee per transaction, but that doesn’t become a problem until you go into the less than $1 range.
