Underwater: Skills and Burning

Healix.5819

There’s chemicals that can burn underwater. In a world of magic though, you can make anything up. Maybe the casted spell additionally created an area of air around the fire.

As for fire killing fire elementals, a fire of greater intensity will “kill” another fire. You could also assume elementals aren’t just an element, but a crystal-like heart that the element formed around. What you’re actually attacking is its heart.

If they ever get around to it, there’ll eventually be an entire living story revolving around underwater areas. With the removal of underwater combat in PvP, they probably won’t change anything until then.

I’m getting invalid authorization, but still unable to load, so I guess certificates are not the problem?

If you were able to see the page using Internet Explorer and no certificate errors or warnings appeared, the problem is with awesomium, the browser GW2 uses to display the trading post. The problem could be anything from a permission violation to a corrupt file.

I’m assuming your trading post was previously working and you didn’t install any new anti-virus or firewall software? If not, some anti-virus and firewall software will block awesomium from running. Be sure to add exceptions for GW2. If your software features a “game mode” disable it, which will usually automatically turn on when a full screen application is detected. Game mode generally blocks any unknown software from running, rather than asking you.

In most cases, deleting awesomium’s cache will fix the problem. With the trading post open, press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to bring of the Task Manager. Select the processes tab and look for awesomium_process.exe. Right click it and select open file location to open the folder. This is where awesomium and its cache will be stored. Close GW2, then delete the contents of the gw2cache folder. Start GW2 as an administrator (right click > run as admin) to prevent any possible permission violations, and then try to access the trading post.

The trading post uses CloudFront to host static files, which are a key part of the trading post, and without them, it will not work. CloudFront is distributed, so the odds of this causing any problems is low. Regardless, ensure the following URLs are accessible without any certificate errors, in the same way you verified tradingpost-live.ncplatform.net (use Internet Explorer). The expected result is in (brackets):

https://d3eye159mg2h6m.cloudfront.net/ (ERROR: Invalid authorization)
https://dfach8bufmqqv.cloudfront.net/ (ERROR: Invalid authorization)
https://d1h9a8s8eodvjz.cloudfront.net/ (404 …)
https://duwhkb85nqihv.cloudfront.net/ (404 …)

If a problem has not yet been identified, any further debugging will require additional software, but before that, fully update Windows, disable all anti-virus and firewall software, clear the cache and try again.

Anything for windose 7 x64 ?

Did it stop working a few days ago? The change in certificates should not affect Windows 7. Did you install any programs or change any security settings in the time it stopped working?

Ensure that your computer’s date and time is correctly set to April 2014 and that your time zone is also selected. The new certificate is only valid as of April, so an incorrect date will cause it to be rejected.

As a simple certificate test, visit https://tradingpost-live.ncplatform.net/ using Internet Explorer (other browsers may bypass your system’s settings). If you don’t have any certificate issues, it should display as “ERROR: Invalid authorization”. If you have a problem however, it should alert you about it, rather than display the page.

If your trading post stopped working a few days ago, it’s because they changed the certificate provider to GoDaddy, which uses a newer hashing algorithm. If you are using an older version of Windows, anything before Vista, this algorithm will not be supported by default.

If you’re on XP, you will need to update to SP3 and install this hotfix.

Eliminate Transfer Fee, Allow Guesting NA/EU

The server transfer is done in the blink of an eye and it certainly does not take 30 minutes or even 5 minutes. Click transfer, log off, log back on, done. That is what I and hundreds of other players have experienced.

Have you ever expected an email to arrive, only to have to wait several minutes or hours? Transferring cross region has the same problem. Your account data is locked, queued and then transferred to the other region’s data center. This transfer could be instant, but if enough people do it at the same time or the network is busy for other reasons, it won’t be.

Why not bring back click for movement?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

GW2 is meant to be an action game. They probably left it out purposely so people from GW1 wouldn’t stick with it.

The ability to jump also makes calculating paths much more complex. If they were to implement click to move, it would be the simple kind, where you run at your cursor, rather than like GW1, where you would run around objects.

Lastly, click to move would be nearly impossible to implement underwater. It would be the equivalent of holding left+right to move.

Yup. People appropriate to the zone get bronze participation or none in a lot of cases. For pre events none is the norm, in my experience.

Now? Because the daily reset was bugged, causing no chest rewards for some.

Are you dealing only condition damage? If so, higher level players are going to constantly overwrite yours, causing you to deal 0 damage.

Are you parking a character at the event and only using it to do the event? Every once in a while, DR will kick in if you do that.

Other than that, I can get a gold medal for these events by hitting the boss once and leaving.

They need to add more anti-AFK mechanics. For example, all the people that sit at range on Jungle Wurm who are usually AFK now die. That was done right. The Shatterer however was done wrong, only making non AFK players do more work. Since there’s no death penalty now, to prevent AFKers with the intention to get credit and die (because they always get revived), they need to add a new mechanic. If you die within the event area, you should be forced to waypoint.

World Boss Rotation and Megaserver

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

Low level bosses happen more often because they want new players to participate in them during their normal play time for that epic experience. These players aren’t going to know about any schedules.

Temples will probably change one day. They display as closed because they can’t assume what megaserver you will actually join. The reason they weren’t scheduled like other events is because their pre-events are a part of Orr. As a simple fix though, they could just add a forced reset every several hours where basically the defense event is impossible to win (have Tequatl blow it up or something).

The “hardcore” events are spread so far apart because they’re meant to be during each region’s primetime, to get the maximum amount of people to show up at once.

You have absolutely no idea how annoying it is to get hit with a bug that breaks your game, that the devs have been incompetent at fixing?

Have you ever worked on a project in a team and thought the new guy could handle it so you let him do it only to later find out something doesn’t work right? Going through thousands of lines of code to realize something was put. in the wrong spot takes a lot of effort, especially when you didn’t do it.

They probably could have manually reset it each day as a workaround, but that would have potentially caused other problems.

Anyone that logged in prior to the patch and had their daily not reset will probably stay that way until tomorrow, because they’re already flagged as completed. Not sure why they would wait until after reset to push the patch.

Most MMOs have a logout timer which prevents this. Even when you exit the game, your character will stay for up to a minute. In Gw2 however, as soon as you disconnect, you’re out. The downside of course is you lose the reward call, but you do gain the ability to “phase out” of the world at any time (about to get killed? logout).

When your client crashes, you’re actually still connected until the window closes (the main window, now the crash report). If the boss is about to die, don’t close it. If your timing is right, you’ll be able to log back in and collect your loot.

Recent upd. ruined experience of the game: Transmut. Charges

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The transmutation system is essentially the same as it was before the patch. The only difference is you can no longer use the low level stones, making it more expensive to transmute pre 80.

By the sounds of it, you were only playing with town clothes, which were not useable in combat and were removed with the patch. Outfits still exist, but now must be equipped as an all or nothing costume, which is free to do.

If you want to play dress-up with actual armor, you will need to obtain the actual pieces or transmute them once and keep the gear set aside so you don’t have to transmute the same skin twice.

Wardrobe system+Future of legendaries

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Healix.5819

The gem store is meant for convenience and cosmetic items. Since selling new maps would only split the player base, they’re far more likely to sell legendary skins. People wouldn’t think of them as legendaries however, unless ArenaNet specifically marketed them as such, because they would be just another skin. They probably will sell glow effects and special effect dyes one day. They might even sell skin unlock packs like they sold skill packs in Gw1.

New legendaries are already coming, and they’ll probably be added before precursor crafting ever happens. I expect them to be obtained using a new method compared to the originals, but you can only guess for now.

Buying skins with gems does not feel like earning them for me.

What about cultural T3? With a system that support gold to gems and gems to gold, there is no difference. Only items unlocked behind actual achievements have been earned, and there’s not a lot of those. Even dungeon runs can be bought.

What should I buy on the Gem Store?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Healix.5819

Healix.5819

The only purpose of the unlimited gathering tools and the copper-fed salvager is the convenience of not having to go to a vendor to buy a new tool. If you’re not lazy, you can simply teleport to the Edge of the Mists WvW map and there’s a vendor right there (then teleport back to where you were). The salvager however is the best of the unlimited tools if you actually salvage stuff, because you’ll use far more than the 25 limit of other basic kits. The living story for example usually makes it so you can’t leave and come back easily during farm events, requiring you to carry multiple salvage kits.

If you need more space, a character slot is better than a bag or bank slot and a private guild for its guild bank is even better. If you hoard materials, the collection expander is also decent. If you like zerging for extended periods however, a bag slot expansion is decent, since you’ll gain far more than you can hold, especially during living story zerg events. I would only recommend an extra bag slot if you have decent sized bags however (18-20). An extra bank slot is useful when you want account bound storage and don’t want to deal with hunting for items on alts.

Now that skins are account unlocks, those are a fair option, but their look is entirely up to you.

I don’t recommend any temporary or RNG items like keys. You’ll get forge stones through achievement point reward chests and BL salvage kits through the daily, eventually.

Lastly, I don’t recommend buying anything now, because everything will eventually go on sale at some point this year, that is, if an extra 100 or so gems matters to you.

I’ve been bugged since the patch and not even world boss chests (the ones on the ground) would reset. When logging in after the daily reset however, those chests would reset, but not any of the account bound daily rewards. For example, I would get all the chests from Tequatl except the exotic the one, nor could I get the Karka Queen chest, though I could get the other world boss chests, such as Jormag, etc. I’m not 100% positive it’s related to logging in after the reset since it’s been every other day that I have done so (as in it could be a 48h reset).

I find it slightly funny however that a fix isn’t expected until after a certain beta weekend is over.

I think it’s sad though that they cant take a couple dev hours away from making the next hit cash shop armor to vet a couple mods.

They can’t officially okay 3rd party mods because they can’t control the content or security of the software. If they were to okay something, they would have to host the download as well as verify the source code because no one else can be trusted. It’s simply not worth the effort and additional support hours for something that’s not their problem. It would also be an easy target for viruses, and considering the average user is technically challenged, it would cause a lot of problems.

They best they could do is unofficially support something by saying they use or like it. They did this for Gw2Spidy, even though it technically violates the rules.

In GW1, they didn’t bring back exclusive items (festival hats) until they quit development.

The reason I asked because there was a developer tracker saying they wont’ bring past event item back because they thought it is unfair to the player at that time.

As for the jet pack, those specific rewards are intended as limited rewards you can only earn during that time, thus making them valuable. It wouldn’t be fair to the people who did earn jet packs for us to bring them back, and suddenly undercut their value entirely.

To be fair, he was talking about bringing it back as a permanent addition. They brought it back as a limited time RNG.

Megaserver: Great idea to reduce dead zones. Implemented to reduce number of servers online, reducing cost of leasing servers.

Only old MMOs work like that. Nowadays, “cloud” servers are used, where each server, or in the case of GW2, each map instance was a virtual server running on a series of physical servers. All NA map instances were dynamically allocated on the NA server farm and EU had another one.

Megaservers reduced the need for multiple empty maps to exist, which was a waste of memory and processing. However, putting more people in one map instances doesn’t exactly make it cheaper either. Have more people near each other is more expensive because the processing and bandwidth requirements goes up for every person near another person, because each player has to be told about every other player.

The primary reason for megaservers is not from a hardware cost perspective, but from a social perspective. Having a new player join the game only to find that it is empty is devastating, because that player will now tell other people that the game is dead, which can easily kill a game.

SAB wasn’t originally supposed to return. It started as a small project that was liked internally and released as a test masked under April Fools. It ended up being popular enough that it warranted a return and thus became a reoccurring event, which are basically used as filler content. Other events like this only occur once a year, but the SAB was released twice in one. They may just be evening it out.

When SAB W2 was released, people complained about its difficulty and immediately pointed at the infinite continue coin as a pay to win item, even though the difficulty was always intended. The idea of the infinite coin actually came from them failing internally, so basically, the coin was designed by and for those who couldn’t do it. Due to its length, difficulty and P2W mindset by some, which essentially made it anti-casual, SAB W2 saw a participation drop, which was rather large compared to the participation during W1’s release. Depending on the actual numbers, SAB W3 could have been put on hold or cancelled entirely.

With the release of the second season of the living story, if they are actually introducing a new zone, the small SAB dev team would be too busy making actual in-world content. The SAB is just a side project after all.

It will most likely return one day however. It is Josh’s side project, so unless he quits, he will probably continue to work on it, even if only in his spare work hours.

They never mentioned MF affecting champion bags. This was an assumption made by players who took the simplified statement “MF affects boxes” as affecting bags. You have to have the skin in some recoverable form (as in if you used a transmutation splitter now, you could get the skin back) or at least 1 piece of a set (gem store set) in order for it to be unlocked. 1 exception is mystic forged items, which unlock all items in their chain.
