Actually it’s the opposite. Any AOE attack can affect a maximum of 5 people. The more people in one small area, the less a lot of aoe is going to affect the total health of the zerg as the attacks will be separated out between more possible players.

Interesting insights from you all about GvG makeup.

I think what a lot of us are realizing is that even RG themselves do not run the typical american “hammer train” and that’s one of the reasons they’re so successful. I think that meta works really well in standard issue ZvZ (depending on who you’re fighting), but has some glaring flaws against a really organized group. Something we’ve really learned this week…

My hat really is off to Mag’s talented guild commanders. This week’s been really surprising and fun in the field. That’s not a troll, I promise.

Quick question for those who participated, did you feel that some of us were extra squishy or that we were not doing enough damage or conditions? Versus some of the more experienced guilds you faced, were we pretty predictable or surprising? Also how do you handle your heal timing? Thanks in advance.

My personal $0.02 is that you were definitely squishier than what we typically face. You also weren’t dealing a whole lot of damage, which isn’t terribly unusual for a first time GvG. It’s easy to get flustered and focus more on staying alive than actually doing any damage.

You did seem to have good coordination as a group though, so I think it mainly is just going to come down to assigning/learning proper roles and coming up with good builds for your crew. We’re still learning this that stuff as well from our experiences with [DERP] and [VR] on the field. We’re also relatively new to the GvG scene. :-P

Some may disagree with this, but I would personally say that zerkers, except in very specific circumstances (spike thieves, for instance) don’t really belong on the field in WvW or in GvGs. I have personal views on good starting points for gear and stuff, but I don’t wanna start an argument in this thread. xD

Edit: I’m full of opinions, so I hope you don’t take any of this as condescending. Not meant that way! I could talk about this crap for days… :-)

Yeah, the way a frontline works, it has to have a lot of micromanagement. You really have to be a tight ball of CC and Pain, and you need a “point” (commander) to follow for that role. If you get spread out, you’re worthless, and can be picked off.

Sure, if you want to play like you. If you want to play like us? Kitten all that.

You guys have a very unique playstyle. It’s very effective, and the standard frontline tactics, we have discovered, just don’t apply against it. Props.

I wish we had another couple weeks against [DERP] and [VR] to figure out the best way to counter it short of either copying it, or having a two-pronged attack. (Two pronged/pincer seems to be the only way to reliably counter it.)

Ranged players need to be inherently autonomous unless you also have a backline commander. They’re safer in that they don’t have to be (and shouldn’t be) in the middle of the fray, but they also have to be smart enough to know how to move, when to move, etc.

Thank you EP and CERN for the GvG’s!! We had a ton of fun, and truly couldn’t get enough of it. It was a great learning experience for us. Mad respect from FaTe to both of your guilds, you guys were awesome! Hope to do this again next time we face you guys!!

As a serious question:

I’m new to doing 1v1s, but want to improve at it. I run a D/D ele which I roam a bit in WvW with (I have about 100 hours in WvW on him). Where are the 1v1 duels going on? I’ve been behind the windmill on a couple borderlands and haven’t seen any of it going on this week so far.

Where are you guys meeting up?

If you see a D/D ele show up with Orange/Abyss Human T3 armor, that’s me, so be gentle. :-P

I didn’t say it wasnt a legitimate tactic, that idea is coming from you lol.
it definitely works against one group to use 2 groups and kite.

Glad you guys came out to give us a little practice vs that style of play though. And I was really happy to see that Mag pushed so hard today instead of just limp noodling like CD’s week with SoS/TC.
Idk about other people but i like fighting mags. The JP brawls are hilarious too.

I’m just trying to figure out what you mean by “trolly”. Also, we use kiting tactics all the time and we usually aren’t running with other guilds. You’re mistaken to say that one group can’t kite one other.

By “trolly” i mean when kitten and VR both run the kite groups around a solo group, it feels like chasing horse archers on Mount & Blade. lol

I never played the game so I don’t really get it but ok. I will just take it to mean very frustrating.

Our original 5 (or so) fights against the single Mag group went pretty clearly in our favor, but once the VR + “otherguildthatkeepsgettingcensored” groups separated out and worked together, that tactic is just very hard to counter with one group. We did get two decent wins just south south of Bay before it looked like VR logged off, but we had an organized 2nd group at that point to counter yours. Took us a while to hunt down some people who could hop on MagBL and coordinate a second group though.

Seemed like all fights resulted in at least some of both sides surviving so there weren’t really any good, satisfying clean wipes the whole night that I saw. Still got several more days to do this though! Having a lot of fun in the field, win or lose.

FWIW, Mag’s open field skill is noticeably better than what we’ve seen lately from others (including T1 servers, but don’t tell them I said that). Left my head spinning more than a few times last night and on reset night. <3

I do not understand how this works,

1) Do player inside this jumping puzzle count towards the amount of players in the map as a whole?

IE when you get in a queue doe these players take up a space?

2) Are players allow to camp at the beginning of this particular jumping puzzle to prevents others from getting to the jumps?

I would like to formally ask that players who aren’t doing any jumping in the Obsidian Sanctum jumping puzzle be kick from the WvW jump puzzle instance because they are griefing other players who actually are trying to get something done, especially during time like this when the goal of one of the achievement is at the end of this jumping puzzle. (The Black Out Cache)

I agree with the OP, because I just went to the Obsidian Sanctum JP and I counted 12 – 15 Jade Quarry camping at the beggining, pulling people off the starting platform and killing them. I personally HATE this, and someone should put a stop to this, such as what the OP said (kicking them if they aren’t doing the JP).

xD This happened today with about 20 Magswaggers. We brought in 15 people and wiped them repeatedly until they ran away from spawn and hid. Then we ported people to the top of the JP (which is not an exploit, btw) and wiped them there as well.

Moral of the story: It’s counterable.

Only difference is, the mesmer portalling up was fly hacking. Rest was relatively accurate, though it was 16 at the spawn, the rest somewhere else in the Jp. Fate was good at smearing a bunch of disorganized players, and good at staying tight together. I look forward to running into them with an actual DORP Raid.

The mesmer was SoS. I was on TC.

The two yaks which service QL, Durios, and SM are bugged in EBG and have been for a couple days now. QL/Durios/SM are not able to be upgraded as a result of this bug.

yeah i cant see how anet would kick people who are not doing the JP and only there to gank people, that would be impossible to work out whos doing the JP and whos not. I think anet have halfed the autokick time in the JP for inactive players tho.

They’re not breaking any rules by “griefing” in there. It’s a legitimate PvP area.

Also, the idea of winner up, loser down doesn’t work at all. If that were the case, those two servers, who may be evenly matched, would never actually get to play each other. They would just swap stomping and getting stomped.

Just wanted to throw that out there for people who are proposing this. It would be just as broken as this matchup system.

I have 3293 hours played on my warrior as of this post. A huuuuge portion of that was in wvw, enough to to say that without a doubt, i am a “hardcore” wvw player.

Last night was the first time that I have reached the point where I literally did not want to be in wvw and was only there because of my guild.

This was due to skill lag. The vast majority of our fights involved immense skill lag, and simply made the experience completely frustrating.

Anet…. i do not want to wvw anymore because of skill lag. This is a GAMEBREAKING issue, and with the tier system removed there is very little reason to wvw.

There is no reason to try to win to stay in tier or to move up, and the fights themselves are NOT FUN due to skill lag.

This is all my opinion of course, but i am sure that i am not the only one that is equally frustrated. I understand that this is still a relatively young game, and i can forgive things like balancing issues etc. But i cannot forgive gamebreaking issues such as skill lag for this long.

Simply put, if there was another fantasy based modern rvr game out there now, I would not be playing gw2.

1st-3rd place are saturated at the moment. TC doesn’t need any NA help and our queue times keep climbing.

DB isn’t a bad place to go if you’re trying to find a server that has good non-NA coverage, but you don’t want to end up on a server with so much NA coverage that your own contribution is meaningless.

DB has “OK” NA coverage, but they’re definitely not stacked there. Certainly nothing like TC is at the moment. Moving ~200 players over was by no means a meaningless contribution.

I was with Helly for those North camp fights, and as soon as the camp would go contested, 20 to 30 TC would show up to try to keep the camp. It was actually quite impressive how dedicated you guys were to keeping that camp.

I think you misunderstood. It’s a TC time-honored tradition to engage in north-camp fights at every opportunity. North camp fights are awesome and huge and take place in a large circular arena with terrain and structures you can use. So much fun.

FA tends to do the same thing, so we often go there, contest the camp, don’t cap it, and wait for people to flood in for an epic fight. Often times we do this when we know we’ll be outnumbered, then play a game of “zombies.” Last one to die wins. You must die to win (running away is disqualification). It’s hilarious, great fun. xD

(As far as the Garri cap goes, we actually cheered for KN over in KNBL when they capped it. I think it’s hilarious that the commander put a bounty on your heads, and I’m sure it was done in good-natured jest.)

I kind of figured that the bounty was in jest, but I still think it’s kind of awesome that my 5 man group managed to cause that commander so much trouble.

Also, I hope Kain enjoyed the unintended distraction caused by my group. We just wanted to see how many people would keep on coming to north camp each time we poked it. We were actually sad when we actually took it, because no one responded that time.

DB has a ton of coverage during SEA, which is one of the reasons they’ve always been successful as a server, but they couldn’t even come close to competing in NA until CO and RE (EMP) transfered over.

I think ALS’s choice was excellent for both them and for DB.

I had so much respect for that guild before this decision. Shame.

They paid just as much for the game as anyone else, and if they want to move, they’re entitled to do so at will. Play for your enjoyment, or why play at all. I spoke with them over the weekend and they seemed like a fantastic group, worthy of anyone’s respect.

I think they’ll be really happy in their new home, and I think DB was a great choice on their part. I can’t wait to fight Dragonbrand again! I’m sure that would be a really fun matchup.

Also: Buffing thieves? Like……really? What in the world made them think Thieves needed a buff? I mean….like…what…I don’t even. People have been calling for Thief NERFS for months. And how does ANet respond? With buffs.

So because people call for nerfs for months, that should determine ANet’s course of action?

In that case I will post every day asking to nerf Protection and Retaliation on Guardians.

Additionally, Thief has been nerfed in some fashion with almost every patch since launch. Just take a look at Shortbow…

They buffed a class that the vast majority of people simply can’t beat in a 1v1 scenario. That’s nonsensical.

It’d be one thing if skill-level were involved in most thieves winning 1v1s, but typically it’s got nothing to do with skill, and everything to do with the fact that the way the class is built is utterly borked in its favor. A noob can get in there hammering one or two keys, and if things go badly, they can hammer a third key and completely escape to heal back up….then come back and do it again.

I can respect that certain classes, when operated by sufficiently skilled players, are nearly unbeatable, but this thief thing has nothing to do with “sufficiently skilled players.” This has everything to do with “Thieves are an unbalanced mess.”

And frankly…who cares about shortbow on thief, considering 95% of thieves I’ve encountered never touch the thing except for blast finishers.

I would be very interested in seeing that video. Since I was with that group and at one point TC even split in two. One on each side of hill I guess to show their size. Each of the two groups was bigger then the single Kainite force there.

This was the same group that went to defend Garrison, we called in reinforcements of about the same size from BMS (great folk there) and then we had the TC group + the FA group all hitting garrison at the same time. Was fun… but when you consider we had to give up everything from the other lands in order to field those numbers and you probably did not (since RE wasnt in force I know you had at least the same number elsewhere) That is the definition of steamrolling lol

Not that is was bad mind you. Its simply a fact. TC can field a WHOLE lot more then Kaineng can and it would seem FA as well.

I have seen TC with double the numbers of KN troops. Can easily wipe us, yet still flash build ACs in the middle of the fight hehe… show offs. ;P

You’re right that overall TC outnumbers probably KN and FA combined. There’s unfortunately no way around that. :-/ I personally do wish the numbers field was more even.

It has been nice dealing with opponents this week that, although outnumbered overall, really understand the WvW game and are very challenging to fight anyway. I hope EP gets a chance this week to GvG CNB. We’re new to the GvG scene, but want all the experience we can get in it, win or lose. CNB seems very solid in our open-field experiences.

As far as open field ACs: You will never find EP doing that unless it’s in response to an opponent doing it first. I personally consider open field ACs to be a trash tactic verging on “cheating.” That’s just my personal view though. Shame on whoever was doing that to you. There were a couple other guilds and commanders on the map last night at a couple points, but we ran in our own tagless group.

I edited the final 15-minute KN garri fight into its own video, but I gotta make sure our guild leader is OK with with the fact that it includes our Mumble chatter before I share the link.

A lot of players spent months whining about WvW progression, then they finally got it and now they are complaining that there is progression in WvW. Amazing.

It just goes to show you, being an MMO developer sucks, nobody knows what players want.

False. While there were some people calling for progression for months, many insisted against_stat_ progression. So when they first introduced WXP abilities, there was no kind of stat progression and you were happy if you used siege a lot and indifferent otherwise.

Then they started sneaking in these stat buffing abilities with no notice or justification. There will be people who love them but I believe it goes very much against the no grind philosophy.

Uh….what? This is WvW. It has nothing to do with grinding. If you wanted to “grind” out that much WXP, it would take you 10x as long as just playing the WvW game normally and having fun with it. WXP is very minimal from grind-able content…and that’s by design.

In five hours of exciting awesome fun in WvW last night I ranked up 4 times. FOUR times.

When things aren’t exciting or we’re just doing small group “grindy” things like killing vets or taking camps, I rarely make even one rank per night.

If anything, the new stuff is anti-grind, not the other way around.

Exciting? Judging from mos TC is steamrolling its opposition, and it sounds like you were just rolling with the zerg from one keep to the next. You have a very simple idea of fun.

We had several fights on KNBL last night that lasted 10-15 minutes. Our zerg size maxed out at 42 players and usually stayed in the low-to-mid 30s (we ran tagless for 90% of the evening). KN had just as many on the map, though they seemed to be less unified/organized. They exceeded our number by quite a bit at a few points throughout the evening.

FA also had comperable zergs show up a couple times throughout the night, but they didn’t stay long.

I’m honestly not interested in the overall “score” steamrolling. PPT play is boring, and wiping 15 with 40 is boring. Last night was fun because we lost some fights, won most fights, and faced a lot of even-numbered opponents.

I got the entire evening on video. Once I edit it down to the highlights (it’s currently over 5 hours long), I’d be glad to share it as proof. The evening ended with fight in KNBL garrison’s lord room that lasted over 15 minutes. That’s not “steamrolling” by any definition.

Hickeroar I play on the same server as you but do not like to join the zerg instead I run supply defend camps and scout…. How do you think that it’s fair that while I arguably am doing a lot for my server I will in no way accumulate the wxp as quickly as those that choose to roll in a zerg taking things and leaving? Yet I play just as much but will not enjoy the stat bonus that you will for much longer? Why even have a stat bonus?

I won’t deny there’s a disparity in rewards. That much is pretty obvious.

I don’t think the addition is bad though, I just think they need to make it more accessible. It should be more like a trait/gear decision. “I can choose to 2500 more health (etc), or I can choose more damage on arrow carts.”

A lot of players spent months whining about WvW progression, then they finally got it and now they are complaining that there is progression in WvW. Amazing.

It just goes to show you, being an MMO developer sucks, nobody knows what players want.

False. While there were some people calling for progression for months, many insisted against_stat_ progression. So when they first introduced WXP abilities, there was no kind of stat progression and you were happy if you used siege a lot and indifferent otherwise.

Then they started sneaking in these stat buffing abilities with no notice or justification. There will be people who love them but I believe it goes very much against the no grind philosophy.

Uh….what? This is WvW. It has nothing to do with grinding. If you wanted to “grind” out that much WXP, it would take you 10x as long as just playing the WvW game normally and having fun with it. WXP is very minimal from grind-able content…and that’s by design.

I personally don’t see what the huge deal is. Just work on that trait line. The more people on your team who have this, the better. I’m working on it.

I was with Helly for those North camp fights, and as soon as the camp would go contested, 20 to 30 TC would show up to try to keep the camp. It was actually quite impressive how dedicated you guys were to keeping that camp.

I think you misunderstood. It’s a TC time-honored tradition to engage in north-camp fights at every opportunity. North camp fights are awesome and huge and take place in a large circular arena with terrain and structures you can use. So much fun.

FA tends to do the same thing, so we often go there, contest the camp, don’t cap it, and wait for people to flood in for an epic fight. Often times we do this when we know we’ll be outnumbered, then play a game of “zombies.” Last one to die wins. You must die to win (running away is disqualification). It’s hilarious, great fun. xD

(As far as the Garri cap goes, we actually cheered for KN over in KNBL when they capped it. I think it’s hilarious that the commander put a bounty on your heads, and I’m sure it was done in good-natured jest.)

Elementalists often had more effective stun breakers on tap than just about any other class.

They still have just as many…. The number of stunbreaks wasn’t changed, just the skills they were on.

Well i am hearing complaints from Mesmers as well about how phan. spec is destroyed.

As for eles, the nerfs arent so bad. Just very minor. but too early to say

Mesmers had ~15 skills nerfed for about 80% of their builds. Including some really, really dumb ones (like nerfing scepter, of all things).

With the gutting of confusion, most mesmers feel there are now two viable builds
20/20/0/0/30 or
0/20/20/0/30
Pick one.

As for ele’s, they’re used to nerfs, stealth nerfs, and anet generally just breaking everything.

And, of course, guardians receive nothing but buffs. Because why the hell not.

LOL that was hilarious. Especially the guardian comment. Me thinks Anet developers primarily play thief and guardian

I love guardian buffs because my main is a guardian. :-P

That said, I have a ranger, ele, and mesmer otherwise. I’m getting sick of the endless nerfs. I really have to wonder how much they actually play the game -AT ALL-.

Also: Buffing thieves? Like……really? What in the world made them think Thieves needed a buff? I mean….like…what…I don’t even. People have been calling for Thief NERFS for months. And how does ANet respond? With buffs.

Also: Massive props to FA for that T3 KNBL Bay ninja earlier. We “kicked all the FA out,” repaired all the gates all the way up, waited for everyone to rally on the commander….and suddenly Bay was blue. No idea how many were hiding inside, but man were we every surprised. /respect

I have commanded a ton since joining the server having a blast and hopefully improving Eternal Battlegrounds during my time on the field.

I’d say, based on the fact that I’ve logged in to find EBG completely green like 3-4 times this week…..mission accomplished. xD You guys are tenacious. You set your minds to do something, and then you do it.

FWIW, you’ve been great to have on board so far. Your attitudes in-game have been great, and I can already see the benefits of your presence. I think you coming here brought us to a nice sweet-spot in our NA where we can now compete with “T1 servers” in that slot if/when we face them. We have some obvious coverage holes in SEA and EU, but once those are filled in, we’ll be in a lovely place indeed.

So you guys are still recruiting?

Let me give you some stats. In the last 4 match ups, JQ/SoR/Bg have fought each other 3 times. One time SoR just won the rolls and got TC and SoS

this means that, according to this pattern, you will just pick on smaller servers. I really don’t see what you guys plan to get by recruiting more people? Neither DB or FA can put up the fight we did before for two reason, we lost guilds and you gained them.

Do you guys really enjoy zerging down a 5 man havoc squad trying to capture a camp, or sitting in que just to play?

I am not trying to troll, im just trying to understand your thought rational so maybe i can justify it when you do get guilds.

If “recruiting” is what you want to call it, then probably so, yes. Our method has always been to only encourage guilds that would increase our stability, not decrease it. This is why we’ve requested that several guilds NOT come who were thinking about it. You would likely be surprised by the list of guilds we said “No” to.

Anyway, matchups are pseudorandom. More coverage for us = higher rating = higher likelihood to face T1 servers.

Yes, that would cause another “T1 server” to roll down in the list for a week, but I think that’s the kind of variance that ANet was hoping for.

Yes, it also stinks for the servers that are getting beat, but that’s going to happen anyway.

As it stands, we end up facing servers that aren’t remotely able to compete with our coverage. I’d rather lose to a T1 server than win the way we are right now.

As far as zerging down a 5-man havok squad goes, the entire metagame depends on the movement and control of supply. Also…right place, right time. We don’t intentionally send zergs after 5 people trying to take a camp.

Gotta say I’m a little surprised that you’re leaving the game, but I understand. I would love to know your /age in GW2 to attain all those kills.
