I think both sides have valid point. People that are disappointed it isn’t more regions with more variety have a point. People saying they are willing to spend $50 on a smaller x-pac have a point.

We have no idea if the xpac is “small” or even “smaller” yet. All we have are data-mined impressions of an incomplete .DAT file.

(That doesn’t invalidate your overall argument: people can be disappointed if they want to; it doesn’t have to be entirely based on evidence, since being hyped is all about one’s impressions, regardless of what the future will bring.)

I would like to unlock HoM rewards that’s why decided to buy GW1. Here is my question: What exactly do I need to buy and how much does it take to get those 30 points? Maybe some tips, guide. Thank you in advance.

You should play GW1 for the enjoyment instead. It’s a great game.

Not everyone agrees.

And even though I also think GW1 is a great game and worth playing in its own right, I think the advice doesn’t help the OP: if they play for the HoM rewards and discover they enjoy the game, too, then they’ll play GW1 for its own sake. There’s no need to tell them what they should/shouldn’t enjoy.

As far as the original questions, the other posts have most of the ideas you need:

  • You must own Eye of the North. Cheapest package that gets you there is Prophecies + EotN (“platinum”).
  • Owning the other “campaigns” (Nightfall, Factions) makes gaining points easier, for a variety of reasons.
  • The GW1 wiki has a great guide at: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guide_to_earning_Hall_of_Monuments_rewards
  • The GW1 wiki is arguably more comprehensive and helpful than the GW2 wiki, if only because it’s been around longer and GW1 has stopped evolving regularly.

(Maps are capping faster)

Noticed this very recently. Especially with the teq fail my group had (we never fail. ever. Even during the crit spot bug). Maps were capping way too quickly but physical numbers just weren’t showing. I heard rumours that mini’s were causing maps to cap faster because they count as people. Today I tried asking my group for teq to hide their minis. and WALA magically i could see the physical numbers and therefore victory. Heck I could taxi in one or two more people in. Do’st my eyes deceive me or is this a thing now? Also feature or bug?

Minis don’t count as players for the purposes of map capping; that counts logged on accounts. Minis might count towards the “character model limit” in your F11/graphics options, which is why you can see more people when people hide their minis.

It is not my experience that maps are “capping faster” or that capped maps have fewer people.

I would have preferred to hear about other elite specs before that of the rev. However, it’s a gross exaggeration to suggest that we haven’t heard about anything else. In particular, the recent BWE allowed us to play elite specs on guardian, mesmer, necro, and ele and didn’t allow us to play the Herald.

Mawdrey (Infused) bugged

Illconceived Was Na.9781

It’s unnecessarily confusing.

I actually didn’t think it was – when you make Mawdrey (or any Ascended item) it already has one infusion slot in it. The whole point of upgrading it to Infused is to add a second agony specific infusion slot just for running fractals..?

EDIT: Or to min/max…

I meant that the terminology is unnecessarily confusing:

  • Agony Infusions only go in “Agony Infusion” slots
  • Infusions only go in Infusion slots
  • All Agony Infusions have Agony Resistance; only some infusions have Agony Resistance.

For those that can think like logicians, mathematicians, or programmers, it’s straightforward: two distinct dimensions (two types of infusion slots + two types of infusions) and one stat (agony resistance) that could be added via one type and is always added via the other.

However, for the vast majority of players, the overlapping nomenclature is a barrier to understanding the mechanics.

At the beginning i found myself dying pretty fast against the mordrem, getting hit for 2k+ per hit, and when i have to survive till dawn, more then 1 can really ruin the experience.

At the beginning, you also might have been playing an unfamiliar profession/specialization, build, and set of weapons. A good test of whether it’s the mobs or experience is taking the same build/gear to core Tyria, especially dungeons, and see how well that goes.

  • Every time I’ve purchased a game, expansion, or “campaign” from them they’ve delivered a core product that has provided 100s of hours of solid entertainment.
  • In addition, they provide frequent content/story and balance/mechanics updates at no additional costs.

I don’t care in the least if it’s 3 legendaries or 40, 3 maps or 50. I only care about whether it’s fun and challenging and based on past performance, it seems likely that’s what we will get yet again.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

The OP’s long post basically says, “some people give better feedback than others; ANet should only listen to those people, at least for a short period of time.”

While it’s true that some people are better able to express their feedback, it’s hard to know if the feedback is more valuable to ANet or not. I’ve posted my share of terrible ideas using powerful rhetoric and I’ve seen some great concepts written in barely understandable language.

Further, veterans have all sorts of great ideas based on what they enjoy/find boring, but a game that caters too much to vets won’t last very long.

In other words, ANet needs feedback from everyone. The only way to know if the feedback is any good is to read it, respond to it, discuss it. The only people we don’t need to hear from are trolls and posts that just shoot other people’s ideas down (or make personal attacks) — fortunately, there are moderators who deal with that already.

tl;dr The current system works well enough. No reason to complicate it.

There’s a good chance this was an oversight or bug, so how about just updating your post to stick with the facts:

  • Lots of us saved room by converting specific boosters to enchanted reward boosters, at a cost of 10s/conversion.
  • We had every right to expect that we could use these for karma buffs whenever we chose.
  • The last update broke this functionality and we’d like it restored.

I doubt there will be many players after the first week or three that run into the situation in which they can’t direct XP gained to at least one mastery track. It might be a problem on the first day and it might be an issue for newly-minted L80 characters; it won’t be an issue for veterans in the long run. Also, if I recall correctly, L80 characters will have some mastery points to spend the day HoT releases.

This is downright dishonest to do this. We were sold on the idea that if we used these boosters, we’d maximize our storage space and consolidate our available boosters. I would have never used up my karma boosters otherwise. Now I’m sitting with ~30 boosters that have been massively nerfed.

I’m very upset with this change since that was karma potential I had stockpiled in preparation for HoT.

OK, I’m also upset. But let’s try to avoid the hyperbole: this wasn’t “dishonest” — it was a bug, an unintended consequence of something else, or they thought they were improving the boosts for us (only to find we disagreed). It’s fixable.

Was it really?

I have yet to see a response saying it is. It doesn’t take 11 hours to say “Oops, sorry guys. Just hang on and we’ll fix that for you soon.”

And you won’t (probably) see such a response. It doesn’t take “11 hours” — it takes someone on staff dedicated to responding to forum queries and minor (though annoying) issues, instead of working on the game directly.

Did you just make that up?

They did just make that up. Back before they were designing the core game, they decided not to allow weapons to be dyed. This apparently saves them oodles of development and artwork time. Since it’s built into the core, it would take a huge amount of work to change it for GW2.

This is still an issue and I feel like I’m not being heard.

You aren’t likely to get any formal response.

For various reasons, ANet has decided that it would not dedicate staff time to responding to the forums or social media. The advantage is that tangling with consumers can end up distracting staff, creating additional issues (since most of us aren’t well-prepared to write so well that we are never misinterpreted), and in the long run, means the company can afford more people to actually work on bugs.

The disadvantages include the fact that most of the time, we won’t find out from ANet if they are working on an issue until it’s fixed (and only if we happen to read the patch notes and someone thought to include the changes there).

Personally, I would love for them to have someone on staff dedicated to respond to bug reports and suggestions. However, I can tell you from experience that it’s all too easy for someone to do that job merely competently and make matters worse; it’s really hard to get the right person who will be worth the salary + benefits that won’t be available to another dev, tester, or even configuration manager.

When will be the next bugs fix+balance patch?

Specializations were introduced in the 23 June 2015 update, not even two months ago. I don’t remember balance updates being more than a few times a year ago.

What’s different now (to me) is that there used to be both major and minor content updates, so it never felt that very much time had passed.

However, for reasons that made sense at the time, ANet long ago decided that they would focus nearly all resources on HoT, which means we’ll only see balance (or content) updates if those changes help the game & community prepare for HoT (which is exactly what the specialization update did).

Regardless, ANet recently changed the mechanics for determining the population of worlds. It is now setup so that it no longer varies over short periods of time, i.e. it won’t do you any good to spam your attempts: those servers that are full at this moment will be full in 5 minutes, as well kitten minutes, 5 hrs, or 5 days from now.

(INB4: of course ANet needs to do something so people can transfer more easily, including changing the incentives to those leaving full servers. I don’t expect that to happen any time soon, though.)

As I mentioned in another thread.. in the past, we were given ample warning.

1. glory boosters
2. buffs on karma jugs

This is not very nice

Actually, we didn’t get ample warning on whether buffs applied to karma consumables. ANet pulled back that change so that we would get time to decide whether to drink the grape kool-aid at 100% value with buffs (up to 198%) or wait and drink them with a guaranteed 150% value (compared to the original), but not buffs.

ANet should do the same thing here:

  • Give us an opportunity to restore our enchantment reward boosts to karma.
  • Give us a chance to get our gems back for the candy corn gobbler, which no longer offers karma (or apparently WvW) boosts, which were among the reasons I bought it.

The Dwayna skins are only slightly pricier than gem-store only weapon skins (500-600 gems usually), assuming one is willing to put in a modest custom offer on the TP, where you can get them for under 700 gems (based on converting). As others have pointed out, those are the premium prices for wanting to own the item on the first day it’s available; typically TP prices drop.

I see several I’d have bought outright no question.
But I will not gamble

They are already for sale on the trading post.

Yeah, 120g is totally reasonable.

So to be clear, you don’t see any you would buy outright “no question” — you would only buy them if the price was right.

Apparently, the price is not right for you either.

  • The current gem:gold conversion rate, it takes ~84 gems to get 10g,
  • The WTB value of each skin is equivalent to ~660 gems; the WTS prices are closer to 1010 gems.

Is there a way to switch map instances?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There’s no reliable way to change map instances. There are some tricks that can help:

  • Have a friend (repping a different guild) enter the map and then add them to your party and _join in" to switch.
  • Guest to another popular world: if there are several instances available, you can usually get into a new one.
  • As mentioned, use LFG.
  • Wait until the map has a 4-event daily or just before/after a world boss.

None of those guarantee that you get into a new instance; they just increase the chances.

There will continue to be a new for 100% guilds, for the same reasons that exist now:

  • 400+ member guilds need a way to ensure they have room for new members.
  • Guilds that want to focus on particular content, especially WvW and GvG.

And just as is true now, most guilds shouldn’t need to care about 100% rep.

Put another way, 100% rep is about socialization, not about the game’s mechanics.

I really think the concept of dungeon with story and explorable mode is really cool but anet forsoke it the moment the game got released and they fired the dungeon team im just interested your opinion do people really dislike dungeons that much that they are not needed anymore? Im making this topic because dungeons are a cool way to have small groups (fractals arent exactly dungeons they are too small) playing and while anet thinks open world events are the best i find no fun sitting at 25 fps in a melee of characters and enemies but thats just my 2 cents. So yeah are u guys pro dungeon or pro open world?

ANet apparently has metrics which suggests that dungeons — as they exist in GW2 — aren’t all that popular among the overall population.

It’s unclear if that takes into account the fact that dungeons are largely the same since release. And it certainly doesn’t tell us if it’s because too many think they are too difficult or too many think they are too easy.

We can only speculate they deem it too time consuming to make and implement skins for an area of low use.

They commented on this a while back. As you said, it takes less effort to produce 16 skins/set instead of 19. (There are only a tiny number of BL skin sets with the full 19 skins.)

if Anet does not wish to do something about this problem with there game. then maybe it is time we stand up and let Anet know we are not happy with this problem and want it fixed

First, we have to agree that there’s a problem; I don’t think there is.

well that is your option and only one of how many people play this game ??? millions . and there is a problem here but the rest need to speak up about this and let it get pushed under the rug like some others would like to see. just saying and that is my honest thoughts on this .

How is that you get to speak for those millions? I’m just saying and that is my honest thought about it, too. You claim there is a problem and yet lots of people don’t see this:

  • I show up for Tequatl 5-10 min before it spawns and it always succeeds.
  • I have friends who show up 25 min before it spawns and it always succeeds.

I’m not trying to push anything under a rug, I just don’t see the evidence that this affects the vast majority of the community. I see that a few people have encountered something maps that haven’t succeeded and that some of those believe that it is due to a group deliberately leaving the map to cause a failure. I don’t see evidence that it’s actually intended (rather than people deciding to head elsewhere for other reasons). I don’t see evidence that this happens frequently or that it affects huge portions of the community.

I get that if it even happens once it would be very frustrating to deal with. I just haven’t see anyone make the case as to why ANet should consider this to be more important than any of a number of other issues impacting the game, such as collections stalled by frequently-bugged event chains, glitched traits/skills, real money traders, etc.

Star of Gratitude alternative acquisition

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There’s a lot of hyperbole floating around this thread, so let’s try to separate out the issues:

Exclusiveness

  • Mawdrey II is only obtainable after completing certain chapters of Living Story Season #2; it cannot be obtained by everyone.
  • Princess can be obtained by anyone at any time.
  • Star of Gratitude can be obtained by anyone who logs in once during wintersday and does not delete the relevant email.

Importance

  • Each of these 3 items has no value in and of itself.
  • Their importance is in consuming vision crystal mats for people who don’t need/want more crystals — it only applies to subset of the community that farms particular content (either because they focus on it or because they play a lot, or both).
  • The overall coin value is low, approximately 40 silver per stack of mats, on average and about 24s per day (assuming an average of 200 mats converted/day).

So this is entirely a matter of perception. None of us who have too many ascended mats are going to be affected much by being able to gain an extra 24s/day. None of us with too many mats are going to clear our inventory quickly. And plenty of people have the opposite issue of too few mats.

That doesn’t mean ANet shouldn’t address the imbalance in acquisition methods. It does mean to me that it’s not urgent and it’s not as important as many other balance issues.

Chest of Exotic Equipment

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

tl;dr: RNG affects your value much more than your choice of box. If you must choose based on some estimated value, choose ele or mesmer boxes.

Detailed analysis:

It’s nearly impossible to get enough reliable data to make predictions on what pops out from the chests. Each account only gets one item every 4 weeks and there are dozens (if not 100s) of potential drops. So you’d have to crowd source from 500-1000 different players. Since even the wiki rarely gets more than 2-3 dozen people offering drop rate data, I don’t see that happening any time soon.

Thus any estimation we make is entirely speculative based on the sorts of things we see on the TP, exotics that drop from other containers, results from the forge, and the things we know can drop.

Here are imo the most reasonable assumptions we can make:

  • Necro|Ele|Mesmer boxes are guaranteed to drop light armor, if they drop armor.
  • Ele & Mesmer have the highest ratio of exotics suitable for precursor forging (40% and 33% respectively). (The highest valued exotics that drop from convention sources are GS, Staff, Dagger, & Sword, so the ratios are G: 3/11, W: 2/11, E: 0/4, R: 2/10, T: 2/6, E: 2/5, Me: 3/9, N: 2/8)
  • Some argue that mesmer has an extra chance of getting a precursor, since there are two GS. However forging data suggests that the odds are the same as for other weapons, just divided between dusk and dawn.

In terms of strength runes, here’s the data on TP armor that includes one:

  • 10 heavy
  • 8 light
  • 3 medium

So I would argue that the chance of getting one from the warrior box isn’t notably better than if you choose a mesmer or ele box.

tl;dr elementalist and mesmer are good choices because they have a chance to give a small bit of silk and you can use their weapons to roll for the most valuable precursors. However, the overall variation is so high and we get so few boxes per account, that it probably doesn’t matter in the long run which you choose: the best choice is the one that gives you a lucky drop and there’s no way to predict that.

Hey there community,

Just want to know what kind of drop rate it is for those particular items from the Dust mites in the Silverwastes or any of those items along the charged tier. Also, I would like to know if there is a better alternate area/ mob which drops the items outside of the Dust mites.

The best place to farm cores/lodes is on the TP: farm gold however you like, put in aggressive buy offers.

Dust mites are the “best” charged lode/core choice in open world PvE, because the other mobs that drop them (notably air elementals in Orr) spawn/respawn in lower densities/frequencies. There are plenty of events in Dry Top and areas in Silverwastes for the mites.

You can also try running multiple paths of CoE, which both earns you gold and sometimes rewards charged cores/lodes (although some would say not as many as even farming air elementals near the temple of lyssa).

Loot When Downscaled Should Be Revised

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Exhibit B is incorrect: converting karma to mid-tier scraps is not the most lucrative use for karma; it’s just one of the simplest.

Also, there’s no perfect balance between downscaling X% of loot vs Y%:

  • people with new 80s have always wanted more L80 loot across the board
  • area-appropriate loot means an ever lower chance of rares and exotics (which some people prefer).
  • changes to the game, over time, often mean what seems in low/high supply today might not be tomorrow (for example: silk used to sell at vendor value)

tl;dr it’s a mistake to assume that changing the balance of downscaled:level-appropriate loot is going to make things better in the long run.

Another Double-Fractal Daily Day

Could we, like, not have these anymore?

We cannot, like, not have these anymore. I’m sympathetic to the idea: it’s the only type of PvE daily that can double up. However, there are PvE-like alternatives in WvW and PvP, so it’s not that much of a hardship.

I don’t think it’s worth bugging ANet about to change now. I do hope that post-HoT, there will be a more comfortable set of choices (and for that matter, more interesting/creative, too — these ones are kind of stale to me).

HoT hard drive space for non-HoT purchase?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

The HoT system specs say it will take up 35gig. So when HoT launches the GW2 file will be around that size.

So those who haven’t purchased HoT and have no interest still must sacrice about 12-GB of HD space for expanshion content, must of which they will have no pay to use without paying for the expansion.

You write as if 35GB is hard to come by; I don’t agree that it is. I think it’s reasonable that an MMO require more space over time, regardless of whether people buy any expacs or not.

I’m sympathetic with the annoyance factor: I expect I, too, will need to make changes to my system to accommodate HoT. However, I don’t see it as an unreasonable hardship. (And no, I don’t have a lot of discretionary funds to pay for computer updates.)

Bring back Festival of the Four Winds!

The game has changed significantly since the festival was last here, including substantial changes to traits, skills, and certain mechanics. Thus it isn’t possibly for them to press a simple button (or flip an obvious lever) to turn it back on: there it’s likely that there would issues of balance as well as unexpected glitches. Further, it’s always important for them to review/rebalance rewards for returning content.

At present, it appears that ANet has devoted all of its development staff to ensuring that HoT releases in 2015 with all of the features promised. I wish they had left some people available to work on filler content for the long drought since the end of LS2. However, since they haven’t, all we can do is wait.

gw2 dropping to #19??? where are the players?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Games always have fewer players 3 years after launch than they do six months after.

Minecraft, WoW and LoL are just a few where this doesn’t hold true.

tldr; Pointing to two extraordinary exceptions doesn’t invalidate a post you’re responding to.

I would have to disagree when the post I respond to says “all games”. All it would take is one exception to invalidate his entire post. If he would have said most or almost all I would have read it and nodded my head in agreement.

I was incautious in my wording. To keep the post brief, I used the common expression in English of “all” meaning “just about all, except for some extraordinary exceptions which were took place for short periods of time, for reasons that don’t apply to the vast majority of games.” I did not mean “all” in the mathematical sense, where, as the respondent noted, a single exception would be enough to invalidate a logical statement.

The point of my early reply is to say it’s typical for games to lose some players over 3 years. Therefore the fact of a reduction isn’t notable by itself. The important thing to look it is by how many and how that compares with other, similar games. The original source for the data (and the original article that references it) doesn’t have enough information to tell us this and therefore it’s not quite useless in establishing whether there’s an important trend.

tl;dr There’s nothing unusual about GW2 having fewer players today.

Queing the mantra recharge after using ether feast will put the mantra on cooldown

Further test proof that after using a healing skill and if the mantra is not ready it will put it in cooldown

It’s a known bug associated with any healing skill under the effects of Mender’s Purity. ANet is aware (unfortunately: no ETA for a fix).

So I’m wondering if this item will ever be back again?
the last 2 times I saw it in Gems Store were June, 24, 2014 and Dec 12, 2014. about 6 months between.
Didnt see it this June though, wondering if it will ever come back?
Now that the new exp is coming,
I suppose there are many out there want to have this item and would be appreciated for its come-back.

Every item returns at some point (with a tiny number of exceptions). ANet hasn’t added anything new (or returned items) in a long time. My guess is that we’ll see 30 days of sale on/near the game’s anniversary. And another set of items when HoT’s release date is announced. And still another set of sales just before and after that release.

tl;dr stay tuned

Change Breathers Into Skins, Not Gear

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I would much rather see Anet finish off what they started with under water content versus your suggestion of having them remove it and its aspects further from the game.

I’m not asking them to get rid of underwater combat. I do like it.

However, none of the rest of our armor or trinkets change when underwater. Why do we have to slot an extra piece for headgear? There aren’t any mechanics unique to underwater helms: it doesn’t help you breathe, it doesn’t change anything about the fight (except for currently: we have to manage a 7th rune and lose some stats).

tl;dr the game already treats it like a skin now. Let’s just make it official and then ANet can focus on the things that make underwater combat interesting.

Quartz Crystal node in home instance

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Weird. I actually got 8 quartz crystals from the node in my home instance today, which is a day after I posted this thread. Strange coincidence.

It’s the first time in weeks I got more than 3 in a single day. To be honest, getting only 3 was actually quite rare and my average was around 4-6 a day, and often times 8 or more.

Must have been a fluke. Since then I’m back to getting only 3 quartz crystals per day from my home instance node.

After so more investigation, here’s what I’m finding

  • 3 is the default: one per swing (3 swings per [f]).
  • The bonus for home quartz is 1 quartz, 1 charged quartz, 3 quartz, or 5 quartz. (maybe 2 or 4, also; just haven’t seen those since I started watching)

That’s pretty close to what I remember when it first got added. 7 days in a row with just 3 is probably rare; it doesn’t seem unlikely though.

Games always have fewer players 3 years after launch than they do six months after. The actual data that article uses is known to be inaccurate. So what we are left with is:

“There are fewer GW2 players now thakittenx months after launch. We have no idea how many fewer or how that compares to the industry averages. In short, we can report nothing other than what people could figure out on their own, using tea leaves or a dart board.”

[Suggestion] Is armor repair obsolete?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I think that armor repair should be removed from the game entirely. Ever since the repair penalty was linked to the cost of travel the whole idea of armor repair started to feel tacky. Since no real cost is associated with repair the consequences of removing it would be minimal. What do you guys think?

I think there ought to be some consequences for dying and so far, I haven’t seen a better one than to require people repair it, even if there’s no cost.

Are people moving away from MMOs?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Every game loses population as time goes on, including MMOs. When it’s new and shiny (and a good game), people flock to it. Later, people move on to other, newer, shinier games. So it’s not a useful metric to say “people are leaving” — we need to know by what fraction and how does it compare to other games after the same amount of time.

Similarly, controller-based games are always popular, too and always attract different types of players, in part because the interface is simple and so people always have a leg up when starting a new game. OTOH, the downside is that due to this same strength, games lose their charm faster (except the super addictive ones that assume a life all their own). Again, it’s not a very useful metric to say that controller games are “more popular” without comparing actual numbers.

Finally, this corporate-hosted forum for a specific game probably isn’t the most useful place to discuss this.

It’s good to ask if people are moving away from MMOs or even GW2. I don’t think you’ll find a useful answer to the question by asking it here.
