I doubt that ANet will do that. They won’t want promoting to be any more efficient than it is already. When I don’t want to do as much clicking, I just sell the T(x-1) item and buy the T(x) item directly.

There are two types of reasons people have trouble finding a name that isn’t already taken:

  • They hate inventing character names.
  • They have imposed a set of requirements that limits the choice of names.

In the first case, the OP’s solution won’t be of much help; they still will hate inventing names. In the second case, I don’t understand why ANet or especially other players need to indulge one player’s personal preference for names.

Instead of revoking inactive account character names, easier solution would be actually to modify the character creation screen. Enable a “confirmation” check that the character name is not in use (on the last creation page). That way, players can play around and test ideas without full commitment and end up creating “A Kitten” as their character name.

Um, you can just try to whisper the name before creating the character. If you get an error message, the name is available.

Holographic Shattered Dragon Wings

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I already have these wings. Others gaining access would not diminish my own shattered holo wings what so ever. A free account bound skin doesn’t have any added value to me if others can’t have it. It’ll still work or not work with an outfit either way. Seems rather selfish to me that some one would deny some one else the use of an untradeable free skin because their ego apparently depends on it.

Why are you saying it’s “ego”? When I played GW1, there were skins that were exclusive to veterans from years before I started. I liked that those skins existed, even though I had no expectation of getting them. For me, they were a fun way to identify veterans from the early days and a way to distinguish who was around for what festivals.

Turn it around and ask if it’s ego that is causing people to say, “I should have every skin the game ever offered” (no, I don’t think that’s ego either).

It is, in fact, that those who gain access to some skins does diminish part of the value of the skin — it no longer means “I was lucky enough to be at the right place and time to get this”. Instead, it would mean that it’s just one more skin in the game, without anything to distinguish it from the others.

That isn’t a bad thing for people to want (and perhaps have it). Neither, however, is it bad for people to want a tiny subset of the skins to represent a place & time. It’s just a difference of opinion.

Also, pay more attention to warning messages.

Exactly. Otherwise, how else can they make it more difficult to destroy stuff? Already people complain about having to type the name of items (especially if they have weird spelling) and even with that protection, I’ve heard about people “accidentally” deleting, because they just stopped paying attention after the Nth message.

I’m sympathetic to the OP situation and hope that Customer Service can help them. I don’t, however, think the solution is to make it harder for everyone else to delete stuff.

(Tip for those who do want to delete quickly when needing to type a complex name: link the item in chat, copy/cut it from chat, and paste it into the prompt; remove the square brackets and voila.)

Don’t bother trying to get them back, it’s hopeless.

Actually, it’s hopeful. It depends on various factors how easy it will be.

First, create a support ticket. Only Customer Service can assist and they can only do so if you have a ticket.

While you wait, you can try some other things:

  • Go again to the BL Armorsmith with absolutely every character, including mules and so on. Can’t hurt to try this again; most of us usually forget to check on one toon (or because we’re sure it couldn’t possibly have been there).
  • Create a character/bank API key and use one of the many sites around that will use that to securely check what you have in inventory. Makes it easier to check on multiple characters.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Cost of Bag Slots is too High

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

What costs ‘too much’ is relative. If it’s too expensive for you, then the responsible thing is to not buy it. Seems to me when people complain something is too expensive, they want to be relieved of the responsibility of managing their money.

the issue isn’t that its expensive for me the issue is that its too expensive relative to everything else offered in the gemstore already, and from the sound of this thread, its being validated the vast majority of people are arguing that you don’t need it which is a separate issue of not wanting it and ultimately they don’t buy it.

So again my suggestion to lower the gem cost is valid in that if they were to lower the cost of it, it would be a more attractive purchase in the gemstore and more people would buy it.

If I understand the actual rationale, the OP claims that:

400 gems is expensive relative to the cost of other gem store items, primarily because it’s a character-bound unlock, whereas all other unlocks are account bound.

I disagree with that analysis:

  • A new character slot is (by definition) soulbound and costs 800 gems for 5 bag slots, or 160g/slot.
  • Convenience items cost 500-1000 gems each and, although account bound, can only be used by one character at a time.

What we get for our 400 gems is the convenience of being able to accumulate more loot without having to juggle it around between characters, bank, collections, and personal guild bank.

So even though it isn’t any sort of “bargain” price, it’s unfair to call it overpriced, too.

ANet has made it possible to obtain nearly every item that originally required having to be at the right place in the right time. There are so few exceptions that it provides a sort of nostalgia connection for those who have the item.

I do not think ANet needs to make it easy nor possible for every collector in the game to get every novelty or skin ever released, as long as they don’t add more than a few of such items each year.

Let us sell Gem Store Items

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Open the market up and let us buy and sell Gem Store items. So if i want to buy 30 Black Feather Wings Backpacks and sell them later if i want to. This would only benefit Anet because Im sure the Gem Store sales would go through the roof. But yeah, open the Gem Store market and let us buy and sell everything on it.

It isn’t likely to benefit ANet much at all.

  • Those who “pre-buy” (speculating that items being removed from the gem store) are more likely to convert gold to gems, meaning ANet won’t receive any direct benefit (as they would from people using cash monies to buy gems).
  • Those who “post-buy” (to obtain an item not currently available from ANet) will be spending gold.

In other words, if anything, this is likely to reduce ANet’s income, not increase it.

Suggestion - Mark items as junk

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Could we get an option to mark items as junk in our inventory?

It would make selling armors and weapons to NPCs easier as it would take just one click to empty our bags.

Your thoughts?

I don’t think it would be a good idea. For some people, it would be great. Too many, however, would end up selling something by accident and yell at anet for creating the system that allowed that to happen so easily. Plus, it’s not like it’s all that hard to empty bags.

So it’s relatively high cost (to make the change and build the UI that allows it), low benefit, and somewhat risky.

The reason there are ticket scraps is because there used to be only tickets. If you think scraps drop rarely then you should consider the ticket drop rate before they started using scraps. It was about one ticket every 50 – 60 chests or so back then. If RNG hated you, then not even that often. The scraps were put in so that they could drop more frequently than a ticket and people could progress by slowly getting enough scraps until they had a ticket. Scraps are actually better because their more frequent drop rate lessens the RNG part.

Eh, no. What they could’ve done is just increased the drop rate of tickets to match that of scraps, instead of using scraps. It’s just a cheap way to make it seem like you’re making progress when you’re really not getting to your goal any faster.

That was entirely the intent: to let you know how much progress you were making, without changing the drop rate. A lot of folks suggested something along those lines, which seems to have influenced ANet in introducing the system.

I’m in favor of it and I wish they would do it for other things, like the mini ghost puppy, fossilized insects, etc.

The easiest way to increase your inventory isn’t to spend gems, it’s getting rid of stuff you don’t need. On the whole, you’ll make money tossing stuff rather than spending money to hoard more.

Everyone I know who suffer from lack of space have that problem even after adding slots. They gain 15 slots and they end up using 16, for example. This is more an issue of inventory management than it is of insufficient room.

There are a lot of tips and tricks you can use to keep your inventory tidy-ish. Unfortunately, none of them work unless you are willing to spend some time weeding out the stuff you don’t need.

First, time-gated charged quartz is a minor issue: at worst, it prevents instant gratification in creating celestial gear. That said, the benefits of gating are equally minor, especially considering that the charged quartz is account bound.

Probably the only reason the time gate remains is that it would take some effort to remove it; there are probably several bits of code that need to be tested after making even this minor adjustment.

In other words, we’re stuck with the time gate on celestial because we are.

Most likely: You got the tier 1 chest skin from the level 20 personal story; unlocking the skin that way does not count towards the collection, and so you just need to go buy the tier 1 chest to finish up the collection.

PS for ANet staff perusing the forums: this comes up a lot, suggesting it’s unnecessarily confusing. The generosity of receiving a ‘free’ skin is clouded by the inconsistency of unlocking for the wardrobe and not the collection.

bank tab

Illconceived Was Na.9781

The advantage of adding additional storage characters is that each adds ~80 slots for just over 800 gems (the additional cost is to buy bags with 15+ slots) and those items will be restored if your account is compromised. The disadvantage is that you have to remember what you store on them (that can be mitigated by using one of the many websites that make use of the character/bank content APIs, allowing you to review what everyone has without logging on).

The advantage of creating a personal guild bank is that it’s relatively cheap now (since the costs are fixed in gold, rather than volatile gems). You can get 50 slots for under 5g (or less, if you want to build up influence instead of buying it). You can expand it by another 200 slots for another 40g. The big advantage is you can see all your stuff in one spot (besides the bank). The big disadvantages are that you can’t review via a website and there’s no protection if it gets hacked.

Cost of Bag Slots is too High

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

When the game came out 400 gems per bag slot was no big deal. Gems are inflated now and it still costs 1200 gems to upgrade one character to max bag slots.

Sorry to tell you this but gems costs the same as they did at launch….800 gems for €10

As Glox says, the only exchange rate that matters in this case is the real world currency cost (pounds sterling, gems, euros). The gold:gems conversion is a convenience for cheap players (such as myself) who don’t want to (or perhaps can’t afford) the cash to buy gems.

It’s typical in all games that this rate increases all time time. That’s why I recommend that people frequently convert gold to gems.

  • When the rate is relatively low (as it is now at ~16g/100 gems, vs 20g/100 a few not long ago and in November).
  • At fixed amounts (e.g. 20g/week), regardless of rate.
  • At fixed percentages (e.g. 1% of the coin in your wallet), regardless of rate.

This ensures that whenever you “need” or covet something in the gem shop, you’ll have enough gems, without having to convert at the premium rate.

This doesn’t happen frequently. When it does, there are some common causes with troubleshooting tips in the account & technical support forum.

  • There’s an error in the cache, which can be resolved by deleting the forum in your user data folder (location varies depending on windows version or macs).
  • Your client is having trouble connecting to the TP server (not the same as the one used by most of the game). This almost always resolves itself automatically if you exit the game and restart.
  • Much less likely is some sort of minor error in the .DAT file. This can be resolved by repairing it. Instructions can be found on the wiki

Alternatively (or if none of those work), create a support ticket and customer service will walk you through these steps (and any others).

Black Lion Keys. Are they worth it?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

BL Keys are worth the cost in gems if (and only if) you enjoy the anticipation of a good drop. All lotteries (including those in this game) are set up so the house always wins by a large margin. So unless you are one of the small fraction of people seeing fantastically lucky streaks, the contents from opening chests are going to be worth less than you spend on the keys.

BL Key farming is worth it to some people, because they enjoy the activity itself, so they don’t need a perfectly efficient return on their investment of time (and sometimes money, for gear and e.g. ingredients to level up via learning the chef discipline).

In other words, the point isn’t the key or the contents, it’s the fun people get from playing this particular game of chance.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

You can’t tell if there’s a change in rare drops without collecting data on 1,000s of drops. Since none of us do that, we are left with our own recollection (notoriously bad) and our own estimation of the rate (also notoriously bad).

For example, a few months ago, I had the following results at the mystic forge:

  • Ran through ~30 attempts resulted in 1 promotion (instead of the expected: 6).
  • Then through ~8 attempts with 6 promotions (vs 1.5 expected)

Overall, the results were exactly average. The first 30 give the appearance of an extreme nerf and the last 8 seem like much better luck. Except this was all done at the same time, on the same character (I just happened to be counting).

In other words, streaks happen and we just are terrible about figuring out how that relates to the actual odds.

If you don’t know the spots and you don’t have an optimized build for farming, stick to getting gold and buying from the TP.

Exactly. Or, if you want to farm for specific drops, do some research first (there are farms for every high-value mat in the game, most of them published on Reddit, some documented on personal blogs, a couple on wiki user ages, as well as a few websites dedicated to this sort of thing).

PLEASE fix Rhendak's loot

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Illconceived Was Na.9781

It’s DR. And it was not intended for you to be able to park a character at the end of a mini-dungeon just to skip over everything but the end and get loot, so be careful what you ask for. Probably the easiest way for Arenanet to fix the issue is to port you out of the area if you logout inside of it.

If they don’t want people parking there they should have though about that before making an achievement for getting his ring that rarely drops and takes long enough to get even when parking a character there.

They don’t want people overfarming anywhere. This isn’t specific to Rhendak.

I agree with your underlying point, though: if they want to tie achievements to particular items that can only drop from a single event, they should consider how people are going to go about acquiring the item. Generally, folks are going to prefer to “find” the item over saving up 50 or 100g, especially when there are 15 or 40 such items.

It doesn’t mean they can’t tie achievements to hard-to-find items or expensive ones; it just means that they should take into account how humans will react to that sort of scavenger hunt.

PS Rhendak isn’t really the big deal, here. The acquisition of Sam is much more problematic, since the actual event (farmed or otherwise) often isn’t available due to a bug in its pre-event chain.

I don’t think anyone is asking to be able to send mass mail to anyone they want, just to members in their guild roster. Gold spamming would not come up at all.

Of course it would come up. Every time a gaming company adds a restriction, spammers find new ways to get around it. They would start using some stolen accounts to advertise or figure out a way to get their spam accounts (those bought with stolen credit card numbers) into large guilds and spam them.

And then ANet adds additional restrictions to the feature (which costs additional dev time, meaning we lose some other feature or bug fix) and the “quality” of the “quality of life” improvement goes down.

I don’t mean to say it’s entirely impossible. I do mean to suggest that gold sellers evolve quickly and there won’t be any simple solutions.

Well, what most big companies do is hire beforehand to increase the staff for the new upcoming work. That way, there is adequate staff for the new work, and existing staff for their existing commitments (i.e., the game that we all paid for).

But, what the heck do I know…

As ANet did. There’s a limit, however, to the benefit of adding more staff, since they need to ramp up to understand the game and its mechanical interdependencies. Hire too many people too fast, and you get people making changes without understanding the consequences or lose productivity from veterans. Plus, when the push is over, you’re left with a lot of staff that might not need. Losing them can hurt the stability of the ongoing game.

tl;dr it doesn’t always help to throw more people at software development.

There really should be a way. This is a quality of life feature that’s very important I think.

There probably won’t ever be:

  • It’s a quality of life issue for spammers and gold sellers, too.
  • Mass emailing (5 or more) only affects guild leaders (and some officers), who are a tiny fraction of the community.

Mind you, I find the suppression at two emails frustrating, especially when trying to share potions or food and I’m know it’s worse for setting up guild events, lotteries, and rewards.

If you can figure out a way that prevents RMTs from abusing the feature, I’m sure ANet would be all over it. Until then, I think we’re going to see an increase in the number of restrictions, not a decrease.

edit: clarifying reference. Suppression at 2 emails probably affects everyone at some point; the OP was about mass emailing.

Another way to spend Karma

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Buy Linen-tier light gloves.
Throw them in the Mystic Forge.
Salvage the result.
Sell the Linen.

Why not cut out the middle steps, and just have an NPC sell bandit bags?

Because ANet never intended karma to be a gold-substitute. It was always meant to be an bound currency that people earned in order to pay for bound items (originally it was soul-bound).

Here are things you do with karma, if you don’t need them for legendaries or other skins. Numbers are silver “earned” per 1,000 karma.

  • 2.4s to 20s — Outfit alts with exotics armor and trinkets. (Value is the amount “saved” versus spending coin.) Caveat: can’t salvage the runes.
  • 11.43s — Basic salvaging kits. (Amount saved.) Caveat: doesn’t scale well.
  • 8-10s — Convert to linen via the crab-grabbin’ glove method. Caveat: very tedious, especially without a Mystic Forge Conduit (and at 100-150g, that eats into your potential conversion rate).
  • 10-30s — Crafting beaded weapons. Caveat: very tedious and subject to market whims. Also, if everyone does this, the profit will drop quickly. (Of course, I’ve seen this suggested 100s of times and yet the 10-30s figure hasn’t changed in 2 years that I’ve been tracking it.)
  • 0-250s — Crafting unidentified dyes Caveat: even more vulnerable to market whims; profit can vary on the same dye from 30-200s within hours.
  • 0-200s — Crafting foods that require karma-bought ingredients. Caveat: similarly vulnerable to the market and much more difficult to spot opportunities.
  • 11.43s — Thirst slayer achievement (represents amount saved vs buying drinks with coin; total required = 700,000 karma). Caveat: tedious, poor mouse.
  • 0-300s — Forging other karma gear (i.e. not crab-crabbin’). It is very hard to find which items to forge that will turn a profit: those who know, don’t tell; those who tell, don’t know. Further, even when you find a niche, you are largely selling to speculators or specialized collectors, limiting the total amount of karma you can convert.
  • 1-4s — Orrian Jewelery Boxes. Unidentified Objects and Charged Lodestones are the primary value-drops, and there just aren’t enough to make this an efficient choice. However, this is by far the fastest method to convert.

tl;dr karma isn’t designed to be easily monetized. You’re stuck with laborious methods that generate little gold (less than for a basic sal kit) or quicker methods that generate even less.

whats top rewards from meta events?

I am doing meta events and EoTM train.

From chest, and bags, whats the top things that can drop?

is there a chance to drop Ascended Chest?

Is there a chance to drop Pre-Legendary exotics?

can all Exotics dropped?

  • Any foe that drops loot for an L80 can drop exotics, including named exotics (such as precursors) and can also drop ascended boxes.
  • Champion bags can drop exotics. For the specific details, type /wiki in chat and then link the bag; the wiki includes a list of everything that might drop (and often, drop rates, on a subpage).
  • Some uniquely named exotics are only available from certain bags or certain events.
  • As far as I know, there are no rewards unique to EotM or WvW generally (save those available by spending tournament tokens).
  • Some bags or festival containers offer unique rewards, such as poly-luminescent jewels from Trick-or-Treat bags.
  • Some loot only drops from specific events or boss chests, such as the Preserved Queen Bee from the Vinewrath event.

ah yes, thank you. Sorry about that

Eh, I wouldn’t blame yourself. The UI for transferring leave a lot of room for misunderstanding at multiple points. (In particular, it looks an awful lot like the screens for guesting.)

Bugged tequatl laser

I’ve seen that happen before too, but just because the laser/battery event failed it doesn’t mean that you’ve failed Teq if folks stay and DPS him down. The time I saw this happen the first group that spawned killed the laser in less than 10 seconds before we were able to get there. We all respawned and DPSed Teq down and won despite that.

Until Khani mentioned it, I forgot I’d see the laser go down like this. As I recall, there were leftover mobs + new spawns + too many people in the event-scaling radius and not enough where the mobs were. The result was a perfect storm, which made it seem as if the laser went down instantly (and instead it was just very very quick).

In our case, the map was already dispirited, with too many nattering nabobs of negativity claiming the overall event would fail and people literally started mapping out instead of trying to “win” despite our bad luck.

Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing happened in the OP’s instance. It just provides a likely alternative.

I’ve had about 4 or 5 whispers in the silverwastes

What is the point of doing it in the SW? To even get there you need to be level 80 (either on a main or an insta-80 alt) and by then people would know about the scam. Low level areas give the most bang for their buck as people barely have any silvers and are new to the game and what is going on with those whispers.

I’ve brought several <L80 toons to the silverwastes. (I was curious about what sort of rewards they would get from the JP — once you’ve gotten to Drytop Scratch, even an L2 toon can complete the puzzle successfully. Turns out tho, no value in taking a lowbie toon there.)

They aren’t meant to make it easy to earn more loot, just as a way to feel you don’t have to throw stuff away.

The thing is there are some people who farm this or that and end up with too much…and then other people (who prefer other game modes) who don’t have enough of the ascended mats. Also, people who play less find it hard to accumulate much. This means ANet wants to keep the amount that drops about the same as it is now while putting some of us in a position of running out of storage.

I convinced my friend to buy this game, he grew 80 pretty quickly, and than he tried the mystic forge for the first time: Dawn.

Now i have 1 less friend

I used to be friends with Dawn, too. She left me one Sunrise, and now I only see her once in an Eternity.

Mystic Dragon "mini" is too big

New thread:
Title: MY MINI IS TOO SMALL!

ANet, please make my all my minis the size of the Mystical Dragon. And while you’re at it, make my dragon twice as big. Tyvm.

And after that happens, here’s the first forum post:

ANet, why did you nerf the size of my Mystical Dragon. It used to be the biggest mini in the game, now even mini Zojja is the same size. I would never have signed on for 2-factor authentication if I had know this was going to happen.

so i bought few dreamthistle skins some weeks ago, to win some money, placed 2k gold on it (almost 3k)

now they are worth nothing

:/

thanks anet!

Um, thanks to “troubleforever” you mean, right?

  • The game has always removed and re-introduced items.
  • The game (and its developer) have never guaranteed stability in price for any given item.

Therefore, you decided to gamble on an almost sure thing and, it turned out, you were that unlucky fraction that made an unhappy choice.

The ‘gg’ goes to any of us that speculate expecting some sort of specific return.

That’s among the reason why it’s good to diversify: if you can afford only 15 skins, buy 5 of three different “families” and perhaps 2-3 different weapon types. Warhorns were boring yesterday and Tempest makes them more appealing to some today.

Portals in Rata Sum mixed up

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I don’t know if this would be considered a bug or if anyone else has this issue but whenever I go from the portal in LA to Rata Sum, instead of bringing through the LA portal, I come through by the Metrical Court wp.

Yes, it’s a bug. Some of us reported it when it first appeared, alongside the specialization patch. Since it’s only mildly confusing rather than game breaking, I’m sure it is near the bottom of the priority list.

I’m guessing that instead of moving the original gate (from the old spot to the new one in LA), they created an entire new one and misidentified the ID for the destination. Should have been a copy/paste, only for some reason it was…not.

How to Multibox GW2?

But nowhere i could find a tutorial on how to Multibox GW2 without any Third Party Program.

First, add -shareArchive to your GW2 shortcut. Note that this option will prevent the game from being updated, so you’ll have to run the game normally every update.

This was the tip I was missing! Thanks. I tried running two executables with two data files and could never get it to work.

I managed to grab my second Spark today from Zommoros, and my guildies also got Spark and Zap (and then made Bolt). I’m not sure if the RNG gods are shining their light upon us, or if the update did something to the drop rates. With all the wackiness that’s happened today, and still is happening, I’m tempted in investing in a ton of Exotics to test out the Mystic Forge rates.

Has anyone felt unnaturally lucky today?

Congratulations to you and your guildies/friends for getting drenched by the rain of precursors.

PS I always enjoy your threads, Smooth Penguin. You always find a new way to stir up responses, even though your other posts prove you know that streaks are common, whether of good or ill luck.

Champ Bags with HoT release

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Lets say I get and save 250 Dragon Chests/Champ bags and wait till HoT comes out then open them. Will I only receive the rewards prior to HoT release or will it incorporate into the exp?

Each container drops the loot programmed for its drop tables based on when it’s opened, not when it’s acquired.

  • The devs have specifically mentioned this in relation to unidentified dyes.
  • Those who have certain festival-related containers have noticed this if they hoarded them for too long.
  • I saved some AP chests until after the wardrobe (hoping they’d add some stuff to replace what they were taking away — no such luck).

The big caveat is that there’s tons of champion bags with similar names, but different ID numbers and ANet might the drop tables for some, none or, all of them.

tl;dr if the drops for a container change before you open them, you’ll get the new stuff. However, there’s no guarantee that the drop tables will change, in which case you’d get the same old, same old.

As Hidori says, as long as people buy gold from RMTs, they will spam messages and steal accounts.

Plus, since they use stolen credit cards to buy the accounts, there’s virtually no cost to spamming as many messages as they like, no matter how many accounts get banned.

ANet already has the following other tools in place — to the annoyance of legit players — that reduce the spam from what it might be:

  • Message suppression — you can send so many email before you get a time out.
  • Chat suppression — ditto for /map or /say, only so many times you can post a similar message.
  • Whisper suppression — ditto for whispering to different people.

In the meantime, /block first, /report after. ANet suspends and bans RMT spammers fairly quickly.
