No. They should not be banned simply because what they are doing is ethically wrong, and sleazy. If they are breaking any rules, then yes, action should be taken. But they aren’t breaking any rules.

It doesn’t matter if you think they aren’t breaking a rule; it doesn’t matter if I think they are. The only judgment that matters here is ANet’s: if they think the actions are damaging to the community, they’ll take the relevant steps; if they don’t, they won’t.

(My best guess is that they will: history suggests to me that ANet tends to read the Terms of Service as broadly as possible to prevent unethical and sleazy behavior from becoming common. Your best guess, if I understand correctly, is that they should not, under a strict interpretation of the ToS. We’ll probably have to agree-to-disagree, until/unless ANet responds to this thread directly.)

Suggestion: New dungeon/fractal mechanic

Illconceived Was Na.9781

The issue has never been stacking. That’s a symptom of a more insidious problem, which is that the AI is artificially unintelligent.

  • Unlike (good) players, foes will remain standing in dangerous AoE.
  • Unlike (good) players, instead of waiting for us to come to them, they will turn a corner and stack with each other, making them vulnerable to AoE.
  • Unlike (good) players, foes use the same tactics, even as they lose health; at best, they only try out something different at fixed breakpoints (usually 75%, 50%, 25%).
  • Unlike (good) players, foes never try to interrupt you. They just go through their rotation and cast potential interrupts at predictable intervals (allowing [good] players to avoid them entirely).

Thus, the more damage you can deal quickly, the faster the fight ends. Zerker gear and stacking are just two possible techniques for maximizing the burst; condition damage (traditionally) and healing/tanking happen to be among many mechanics that slow the burst.

That’s why the so-called meta always prefers zerker gear and always puts down anything else.

tl;dr the only way to change the meta to be dynamic (rather than the same everywhere) is to change the AI. Otherwise, all we’ll see are new techniques to maximize DPS over short periods of time.

[Wiki] Damage of skills changed during Patch

I think you want someone from the wiki to tell us if/when they updated the wiki to reflect the current mechanics. The best way to do that is to ask on the wiki on the Community Portal talk page

Folks there are usually happy to explain how things work behind the scenes. Usually, they pull data from the API and transfer it via script. When that’s not possible, they do controlled tests and record results, updating the relevant wiki pages (sometimes by putting data in a table and using a script, sometimes manually).

You can also just point them to this thread and ask someone to explain. I’ve seen a couple of the heaviest contributors post in the forums.

I did another example on my thief:
Wild Strike Tooltip Damage: 302

Skill Coefficient = Tooltip damage / (Average Weapon Strength * Power / Armor)
0.7852 = 302 / (1000 * 1000 / 2600)

Which is exactly as the wiki says: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Wild_Strike

The “skill fact” on Wild Strike was changed on 28 June 2015 from

  • 286 damage → 302 damage
  • 0.85 coefficient → 0.785 coefficient

For what it’s worth, the specific contributor making the change only edited the wiki on that one day, changing three other skills.

Data, priority, and the Catch 22

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

First, it’s pretty clear that everyone is using the same words to mean different things. Second, it’s also clear that ANet often has no idea how to be explain their data to be people (such as ourselves) who won’t be allowed to see it. (Colin is better at it; Mike is terrible at it.)

My understanding of what they said is:

  • Those of us who stick to a single game mode mostly hang out with others who stick to that same mode (for reasons I hope are obvious). That means our impressions are skewed about how many people are exclusive to a single game mode.
  • They have a specific definition of how much time is spent to count someone as exclusive. It’s unclear if they make allowances for people who switch modes because something they want is hard-to-obtain in their preferred mode. If someone plays PvP to get Glorious armor and never goes back, should they be considered mixed for that month? Or still as a PvE-exclusive player?
  • The phrase, “you’re the exception” used in the video was, at best, undiplomatic. As a bit of PR, it was completely foolish. What I suspect they meant was that the number of people who play WvW 90% of the time (or more) might be in the 1,000s, while those who play WvW 70% and something else the rest of the time is in the 10s or 100s of 1,000s. In other words (according to ANet), she wasn’t “unique”, just part of a small albeit dedicated subset.
  • Finally, regardless of the truth of the statement, it was useless as a way to communicate ideas. The question has become “is ANet out of touch” instead of “what does the data tell us about how people play.” I can’t imagine that was Colin’s or Mike’s intent.

tl;dr ANet really should find people other than Colin and especially Mike for unscripted interviews. They are good at hyping certain kinds of things, but terrible at addressing spontaneous questions in a way that shows ANet’s and GW2’s best side.

In particular, I think their remarks were understandably misunderstood. We are less informed about what they meant than before they gave the interview.

Overall, you end up losing money this way (unless you are extraordinarily lucky). However, you’ll also grow your luck substantially.

(It’s best to do this on a character with tons of empty inventory slots — both bags drop a lot of variety of things.)

You will end up with some valueless items (notably recipes) as well as some account bound ones. Save or delete those, as fits your inventory management style. (I recommend deleting.)

The people who do industrial amounts of forging get 3 sparks in less than 3 weeks. It just doesn’t happen often. It’s sort of a meaningless metric unless we have all the details:

  • Did he forge rares or exotics? Did he forge daggers or a mix?
  • How many did he throw in?

At the extremes, compare throwing in 12 miscellaneous rares versus 12,000 exotic daggers. In the first case, he’d be suspiciously lucky and in the second he’d be suspiciously unlucky.

Currently hovering around four and a half silver with a weak price ceiling up to 5s. Only 15kish supply ~5s which is roughly 750g, if someone seriously wanted to push the prices up this could get interesting fast.

Sold like 4k yesterday at ~3.9s ;3

I thought I did well when I sold at 2.5s a while back (which was tons higher than the going rate at the time I listed them)

I should have seen it coming. All of the facts listed by Wanze were known back then; the drought was predictable.

Or in other words, since the Zephyrite ships crashed, the market for Zephryrite mats & goods skyrocketed. (I smell a conspiracy — which NPCs named Evon Gnashblade went long in Quartz?)

Trading post fees

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Technically, you aren’t selling directly to the other player. The game treats your offer as a listing that happens to already have a buyer.

If you aren’t in a rush, I would recommend looking up the trade history of bolt and talking to some market-savvy people about prices. If you are in a rush and want to avoid risking a long wait (or the annoyance of being undercut), my usual advice is to choose a price in midway between the highest buy and lowest sell offers — closer to the sell if you don’t mind some risk, closer to the buy if you do.

Heck, even just asking for 20% more than the highest buy offer is pretty good:

  • Your net gold ends up being slightly more than that highest buy offer.
  • If feels pretty good when you do better than typical sellers.

Good luck, viperziv (and congratulations on forging Bolt).

Only 7g til bolt! Goldskitten

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

This is scamming in my opinion, and either way you can report people for it, support has all the tools to see where every piece of gold in the game goes, report him, encourage others to report him, and let support do their job.

How is it scamming? A scam implies that you are giving something in return for something else.

It’s a scam because: there’s no way their statement could be true week after week. So they are begging for people for donations and misleading the community about the reason.

You don’t have to be expecting something tangible for someone to be scamming: just look at all the people who ask for donations after natural disasters and then pocket the money. They aren’t offering you anything specific in return, except the expectation that you are donating to a worthy cause. Instead, their cause is not worthy and worse, it discourages people from donating to those truly in need.

Admittedly, the stakes here are much less important: someone getting 7g from someone wanting to be generous doesn’t really “hurt” anyone, after all it’s all just virtual wealth. However, it’s bad for the community, i.e. in the context of this game, it’s still sleazy.

Honestly, I’m surprised that anyone would defend this behavior as legitimate, especially those that have, in other posts, complained about TP fees, TP flipping, in-game lotteries, and other practices/mechanics which have actual benefits to the community (however controversial they might be). In this case, the only person receiving anything at all is the scammer (and the donator, but only as long as they are fooled about what happens with the gold).

I donate stuff all the time to friends and even strangers; I just never do so for someone spamming /map.

tl;dr it’s a scam to ask for donations by giving a false reason and I hope that ANet treats it as such.

I'm getting suspended while being inactive.

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I just don’t buy the argument that there is some way for an account to be suspended or banned for receiving RMT gold without actually, you know, receiving that gold.

  • If the mails containing said gold are returned to sender, then the account never received the gold and so wouldn’t be subject to any infractions.
  • If instead the player accepted the coin, then there is a record of that.

The OP in this case certainly sounds sincere. Alas, that’s not enough to prove their case, especially since each of their explanations of the “facts” has other explanations. For example, we have only their word that they never accepted any RMT gold. Their “proof” is an email in their inbox and there are lots of explanations for that, including that they got e.g. 10 emails and only accepted the gold from 9 of them, leaving one to support their case.

We also only have Chris Cleary’s word that ANet has done their due diligence and has confirmed the acceptance of RMT gold (not just the receipt of such email). However, CC’s track record is excellent and I’m inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, especially in the absence of any other compelling story, never mind any actual evidence that ANet made a mistake.

tl;dr Even though the OP makes a plausible case, in the end, they are asking us to accept their word, assume that ANet doesn’t know how to distinguish received coin from coin still in the email (or returned-to-sender), and assume that they don’t know how to check the account record to verify logins (locations, IP addresses, time online, etc.).

Bring back unidentified dyes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

The reason unID dyes were removed from the loot tables is that, even after 15 months, the supply still outstrips the demand, relative to the equivalent pre-wardrobe situation. In particular, it’s cheaper today to unlock a color for your account than it was when dyes dropped as a sometimes bonus when harvesting plants.

  • Prior to the wardrobe, unlocking a dye did so for only one character; each additional character required buying a new vial. Thus to unlock a color for your entire account cost a minimum of five times the cost of unlocking it once and could cost much more for those who bought alts.
  • The price of unidentified dyes today (~85s) is still less than triple what it was the month or so before the announcement of the wardrobe (~30s).
  • This is also true for individual colors, although the variation is more substantial for due to popularity and sometimes temporary market manipulation.

(I confess, I do miss getting them as bonuses from harvesting plants.)

tl;dr aside from the shock of comparing prices directly, it remains far cheaper today to unlock colors for all our characters than it was before. There is no need to increase the supply of unID dyes.

[Suggestion] About Outfits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

The entire point of outfits is that they are not customizable; if they were, they would just be ordinary armor.

From the developer’s point of view:

  • Outfits are cheaper to design & test — each of the 10 designs only has to be tested against itself; they do not need to be tested against any other armor or outfit in the game.
  • Easier to list on the gem shop: one item, one price.

For the player:

  • Outfits can be applied without transmutation costs.
  • Outfits remain the same, regardless of changes to the underlying armor.

All of these benefits would be lost, if outfits were customizable.

(Of course, armor piece skins have their own benefits, which as pointed out by the OP are lost by using outfits. The point is: there is a reason why outfits can’t be customized.)

First, I’m sorry that you haven’t gotten to the Font yet. It’s hard to understand why they’ve left this bug for so long, since it’s a required step for getting Mawdrey. I’m also surprised that logging out/back keeps sending you to LA — it doesn’t for nearly everyone else who has reported back to this forum.

Fortunately, there’s another work-around. While you are on the map, take one of the many portals to Rhendak’s Tomb (usually, people just say “port to Rhendak”). Then, work your way backwards from the Tomb to the Font; each gate you encounter can be opened from the ‘wrong’ side, so there won’t be anything blocking progress.

With a 20% chance of promotion, it’s not that unusual to see streaks. If you want to know if your necro is getting worse luck, you’d need to track 200-300 attempts on each character. A few months ago, I had a weird streak with forging masterwork daggers:

  • 30 attempts (120 daggers): 1 rare (expected: 6).
  • 8 attempts (32 daggers): 6 rares (expected 1.5)

The first 30: looked like a drop in the promotion rate. The last 8: looked like an increase. Taken as a whole, the two streaks ended up delivering almost exactly the number predicted. Imagine if those streaks occurred on two different characters — it might appear that there was some connection between profession and the promotion rate, when instead it was just luck.

Just goes to show how bad we humans are at estimating odds or understanding patterns by gut alone. We need to write down our observations for a while before we can start to say whether there’s a new pattern or not.

I am getting my obsidian shards to finish off a legendary, and I’ve been reading that people are recommending farming the silverwastes. I got a couple questions regarding this. First, has there been any “for science” info on obi shards from the bandit chests? Is there an agreed up drop rate, and does anybody know if the drop rate is modified by magic find?
Secondly, which do you think would be faster, farming chests for the shards directly, or events for karma and crests, and then bying the shards with those currencies?

Faster isn’t the only important metric. There’s also boredom. Some people can do 8 hrs of chest farming. I’m lucky if I can avoid narcolepsy after 50 minutes. I far prefer running around doing events with karma buffs, switching to some lowbie FotM or the occasional Tequatl, etc.

Plus, your mileage will vary.

That said, there’s something very satisfying about getting the obbi directly, instead of farming the currency with which to buy it.

PLEASE fix Rhendak's loot

Illconceived Was Na.9781

That makes this a suggestion about how to improve the rewards and/or its acquisition, rather than a bug report.

I’m reporting it as a bug because there’s no ingame mechanism that tells me that this is not a bug. If a developer wants to confirm that it’s working as intended then it would shift to a content balance discussion.

Alright, then I’ll just remind those following along at home of these points:

  • Lots of things aren’t documented in the game, including Mystic Forge recipes and Diminishing Returns. After player research, the wiki community eventually documents everything related to the game’s mechanics, whether good|bad, bugged|intended|unfortunate.
  • The DR article is fairly sparse, since it’s difficult to do thorough testing.
  • The developers have stated on more than one occasion that they aren’t going to discuss diminishing returns in detail (since that makes it easier to avoid, thus defeating its purpose).
  • There’s plenty of evidence that Rhendak’s loot works exactly like other events: if you repeat it too often, your rewards get diminished.

tl;dr It’s only my opinion that the evidence is very strong that Rhendak’s loot is suffering the expected effects of DR; others are welcome to draw their own conclusions based on the same “facts”.

However, I pretty much just use “safe” bags and generics; I don’t much like having my inventory sorted for me. Instead, I use the text filters to find rares and masterwork, move them to my bank (which always starts with at least 60 free slots) and wait until I have time to manage TP, salvage, and mystic forging (all done by a dedicated character). After selling directly to the trading post, I made 3.5 gold in one day. THAT is what this thread was about. Sigh…

This thread is still going because you started a post about min/maxing:

  • Previously, you made less money. You learned to make more by using the TP.
  • You urged others to do the same, which is why you titled the post, “Tip of the day”
  • Someone else came along adding to the “tip” by saying you could make still more money by customizing your price.
  • Others of us pointed out that, while true, that didn’t invalidate the original advice.

I know people who, like yourself, never used the TP (for any of a variety of reasons). Like you, they sort of didn’t want to add complications to managing unwanted inventory.

In other words, to someone who vendors everything, your own advice reads like “giving a flying kitten about min/max”

The replies since have been about making low-effort additions to your advice that generate even more gold.

tl;dr any advice that involves making more money by managing the same resources is, by definition, a form of min-maxing. So it’s no wonder that others have chimed in with minor changes that can generate still more.

Eternity crafting

As people have suggested, the OP will end up with the better deal:

  • OP starts with one legend (unbound sunrise) and 0 skins unlocked. Ends with one legend (bound eternity) and 3 skins unlocked. Net gain: 3 skins.
  • Friend starts with one legend (bound twilight) and one skin unlocked (twilight). Ends with 0 legend and 2 skins unlocked (adds sunrise). Net gain: 1 skin + net loss: one legend.

Mind you, everyone gains at least one expensive skin, so some would argue it’s an ok deal. (And of course, both end up with all the precursor skins — I’ve never found use for them, so I don’t consider that to have any value; your mileage might vary.)

I don’t understand why we have to deal with unintuitively-named prefixes in the first place. Why not just allow us to craft gear with the prefixes we want? For example, exotic zerker could require something like 3 power bloods, 1 vicious claw, 1 tbd (for ferocity). Whereas Assassin’s would use 3 claws and only 1 blood.

I don’t think ANet should decide for us ahead of time what stats are useful and what aren’t.

Hi

I was think about how nice it would be to do crafting and trade post shopping on my mobile phone instead of playing the sad run of the mil mobile games when you sit in a waiting room or when you are out and away from your computer.

What do you all think is it something you will find beneficial as well?

That is very backward thinking from them.
If they maybe said it poses a security risk then I would still say " Yeah maybe".
But just plain “no” because its not on the list is a bit on the “not listening to your client” side.

They didn’t say just plain “no.” It’s a bad idea for a couple of reasons:

  • Creating mobile apps requires a specific sort of expertise that they lack, particularly in UI design (among other fields).
  • They’d have to develop and maintain it for at least 3 additional platforms, so it would take away resources from other features or bug fixing.
  • There are security issues.
  • I’m not sure they want people playing the TP without playing the game — part of the point of an MMO is the multiplayer and a TP mobile app would lack that.

tl;dr it probably wouldn’t be good for the game, even if I personally would make good use of a mobile app.

The original voice acting was terrible in my opinion and some of the dialogue was worse.

  • What kind of leader says “this won’t end well” before a critical battle? Who says “moving on” instead of “good job” if they are trying to help mobilize a population who has yet to recognize the danger they are in?
  • His voice always suggested to me that if I didn’t say supportive things to him that I might find him alone in the woods later, having slashed his ankles with a Copper Logging Axe. He makes Eyore look like an optimist.

I never felt he took credit for anything. He was Tyria’s expert on Zhaitan and was asked to lead the Pact. My character was unknown and expected to do a lot of the leg work — I always think it’s incredulous for every player character in nearly every RPG to be considered the best fighter and the best general and the best tactician all rolled into one. I like how GW2 actually divides different characters into different important roles; it feels much more epic to be part of an epic campaign, instead of “there can be only one.”

This is working for me. Are you sure you have all the materials you need to refine 100 bolts? (i.e. 900 scraps of silk). How many bolts is it showing you could craft without manually entering an amount?

Maybe you can post a screenshot of what you are seeing — I have no trouble selecting a custom amount by typing (plus you can use the arrow keys on your keyboard and/or the triangle icons next to the amounts).

Regardless of what should be happening or what we think is happening, you can work around this issue by tuning down your graphics. There are two ways to approach it:

  • Start by using the “best performance” settings, as Menadena suggests and work your way up.
  • Start at your current settings and try turning down specific settings while facing the Mystic Forge in LA. Pick 2-3 of the settings that increase your FPS the most.

Another option is to simply turn off showing player names (main option panel, slightly below “autoloot”) and perhaps also NPC names. My GPU is much happier since I did that.

Or try working with the Customer Service team by creating a Support Ticket (follow the links for ‘Support’) — they seem to be very effective in helping people troubleshoot and resolve this exact sort of problem.

Good luck and if you have time, please let us know how it turns out.

Why is TP so SLOW?

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There are two reliable workarounds:

  • Start by clicking in the gold field and use [tab] or [shift+tab] to move (respectively) forward or back.
  • Alternatively, bring the cursor up from below the relevant field. Takes a little practice to do it without thinking about it and now I’m used to doing this as a matter of course.

Background: For reasons lost in the annals of time, someone decided to make fields work different in this UI than on the vast majority of websites: moving the cursor over the field changes the focus (instead of the typical behavior of requiring you to click in the field). That is topped by a visual glitch at certain resolutions where the actual field isn’t located where you think by looking at the graphics.

In other words, there’s a combination of a minor UI bug plus a non-standard interface, combining to create a huge annoyance.

Incidentally, this is different from the TP being slow — this is just the interface being so quirky as to seem unusable, without one of the above workarounds.

How do you enjoy GW2 after 9/14 patch?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

For me the patch destroyed GW completely. I’ve tried to play it but it just doesn’t feel the same anymore. The level locking is awful and completely ruins the immersion. Before the patch this game was one of the best MMOs and games in general out there, not so much now. It just saddens me that the developers destroyed this game completely. This game was not hard to learn even for new players. Don’t fix what is not broken is not something the devs seem to undersand. And this is not a hate or troll post, I’m just curious if there’s anyone else who feels the same way.

I’m sorry you feel that way. I think the game is far better now than it was at launch (with some minor exceptions).

I do feel that ANet has no idea how to roll out certain types of content. The NPE should have been a good thing for the game, not divisive. The problem is they made it sound like something from which MMO regulars would benefit directly, which was silly and misguided, at best.

The point was: they identified tons of people who played and left the game, who would have stayed, had something like the NPE been in place to start with. More players means a stronger community, which ultimately benefits the game and therefore veterans. I don’t understand why they thought veterans would embrace additional gating of any sort.

That said, aside from the recently-departed trait system, I find it easier and more fun to level toons, despite the gating (with some exceptions of a few removed hearts). There are a lot of features that came with the NPE that reduced leveling tedium.

tl;dr I’m sorry the OP likes the game less; I personally prefer it now.

That is not good, anet. The page does not work

It’s bad design. I can get it to work 100% of the time; it’s just more trouble than it was before to get the focus on the right field. (Although, I suppose that could be someone else’s definition of “broken.”)

[Gemstore Q]Watchwork Mining Pick.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I completely agree that the Watchwork Pick should never have offered a game feature in the gem store that is unavailable from normal game play (regardless of people being able to convert gold to gems).

Almost everything grants gold and everyone can convert gold to gems, so how is it unavailable from normal game play?

Because it’s the only gem store item that offers a feature that you can’t get within the context of the game, without converting gold to gems. In order to acquire it, you need to spend 1,000 gems — ~130-200 gold (depending on when in the last year you converted) — which is a lot more than people are willing to save up for.

I can’t think of another “feature” in the game that costs that much, without having a cheap alternative within the game. With the Watchwork Pick, I can get as many sprockets as I care to farm; the closest I can manage is the Sprocket Generator that some of us obtained without coin via the Living Story – that one is limited to ~10 sprockets/day.

So, no, I don’t agree that this can be acquired through “normal” game play. And I don’t agree that this is simply a convenience item. And I say this as someone who normally grants ANet the benefit of the doubt and grants them a “win” in case of a tie between points of view. In this case, I think they made a mistake, especially since it distracts from their argument that the Gem Store is just about convenience and looks.

Birthdays coming up!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There has been speculation on these forums, on reddit, and I’ve even seen it in map chat. I think people haven’t been very inspired by the identical rewards from the 1st & 2nd birthdays to spend much time worrying about it.

Veterans of GW1 enjoyed getting a tradeable, random mini. Well, I say “enjoyed” — those who got the low-drop-rate ones loved it and those who did not…well, they did not. On average, that probably worked out to “enjoyed,” especially through the rose-colored lenses of nostalgia.

In those days, there was tons of speculation about the next set of potential minis (heck, IIRC Gaile Gray had a user page on the official GW1 wiki just for those who wanted to unofficially guess).

We can pretty much already expect a birthday booster, an insta-L20 tome, a minor booster of some sort, and one additional item. Once you’ve seen one Mini Queen Jennah, you’ve actually have seen them all (and you certainly have unlocked the ‘skin’) and the primary reason we care about getting multiple Birthday Blasters is that they are soulbound, instead of account bound.

tl;dr I like getting free stuff and I like the birthday presents we’ve seen so far. I just haven’t found them inspiring or otherwise worth the time to speculate about.
