Stop making unannounced changes to the game Anet.
It cripples your credibility, seriousness and feeds the sense of mistrust, no matter how small they are, load them all in the game release notes.

Thank you in advance.

I try not to feed mistrust unless it’s hungry; it’s overweight already.

There are lots of reasons why some changes won’t make it into release notes — it’s actually really difficult to write them up in a form that players can absorb and all sorts of changes won’t have an important (direct) impact on us.

In addition, I love when they sneak stuff in, like new NPCs that are left for us to discover. I think that adds to the mystery and the breadth (or depth) of the game.

So without specifics, I can’t agree with any of the complaints. I don’t think ANet’s credibility is hurt by this (as low or as high it might already be).

core PvE daily rewards should be "better"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Illconceived Was Na.9781

For the sake of discussion, let’s pretend that each daily takes the same time to complete (we know that’s not true, but it’s an okay place to start). The substantive rewards for each end up being:

  • PvP: 3 units of progress towards an 80-unit reward track, that includes progressing chieves or unlocking skins
  • WvW: 3 units of progress towards an 80-unit reward track, that includes progressing chieves or unlocking skins
  • PvE: extra mats/gear

Now, that’s obviously different. Is it bad? I dunno. Generally speaking, PvE generates rewards for just about anything we do, so it seems fair to beef up the other modes. Is it reasonable that a “month” of PvP/WvW dailies offers 4 dungeons skins + a bunch of tokens? Maybe not since the equivalent PvE reward requires completing ~13 dungeon paths.

In the end, I try not to get too worked up about it. I’d like to see some more variety in dailies; I’m also okay with the system the way it is. I try not to let my enjoyment of the game depend too much on the rewards.

apparently, I’m not alone with this opinion.

There are millions of people who have played GW2 — it’s very unlikely that we’re alone in any particular opinion. (Besides which, the forums are a good place to find negative opinions; people who enjoy the game often don’t stop to say so.)

I’m genuinely sorry that you’re not enjoying the game as much as I have. That doesn’t, by itself, mean that something is wrong.

I’m an experienced software engineer. I’ve worked quite a bit with databases over the many years I’ve been working. I know it’s easy to selectively copy data. I’ve also looked at the GW2 API so I have a good idea of the kind of data they have.

What makes you think this is solely a database issue?

As for why this solution never occurred to them; they’ve already decided they can’t do this so what makes you think anyone at ArenaNet has ever thought about this at all after the initial “oh that’s really difficult, rolling back the personal story would be a big problem there”?

No, they didn’t already decide “they can’t do this” — we only know that they haven’t decided to do it. The DB might be an issue or not. There might be scripting issues. There might be support issues. There might be economic or reward balance issues. Or they might have decided that even though it’s “easy” to do this, it’s not worth the trouble for the amount of people likely to spend 1000 gems (or whatever they think it needs to cost).

They make business decisions; they often revisit them. They find things that they’d like to do, but don’t have time to implement (such as the update to material storage).

We can’t assume anything about the technical details or the decision-making process.

The best we can do is ask for features, discuss some of the difficulties, critique the assumptions, tweak the balances.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

When the game first launched, there was a persistent bug in which we’d sometimes get ruined materials (as if we didn’t have the proper tools equipped). It turned out it happened most often if we were in combat (with many nuances related to the node, which weapons were equipped). Back in the day, you could swap tools more easily, among other differences.

To solve the bug, they decided to treat ‘gathering’ as a type of combat, so that our characters weren’t swapping in & out of the mode. My guess is that some other change related to combat animation is affecting the while-gathering animation. (My guess: the popular change to the preview window, in which our characters display as if in combat, in the ‘wielded’ mode.)

tl;dr bugs happen
(personally, I try not to let it bother me — it doesn’t affect the parts of the game that make it fun; your mileage might vary)

Now they have made the same mistake again. They don’t really understand the root problem: a game should not penalize its most loyal fans.

And you keep ignoring the root issue: they didn’t set out to penalize anyone. It’s an accident of prioritizing giving us something quickly rather than making everyone wait for a long time.

And regardless, it’s a trivial reward. Before they offered any spirits shards for XP, I was converting stats to unlock all the ascended skins and I still was earning far more shards than I was spending.

Dungeons haven’t gone anywhere. The rewards were OP’d for a long time and we got used to the easy loot. In addition, many veterans burnt out repeating them over & over again. They are perfectly fine for people learning builds, attempting solo/duo for the first time, and something less challenging for 5-person groups. The rewards are pretty good, even if they aren’t farm-worthy any longer.

So instead of hyperbole, stick with the simple request you have above: “increase the reward for Dungeon Frequenter from 5 to 10 gold”. I suspect that would be an easier “sell” than the vague “bring back dungeons”.

I agree. Your point being…?

You argued that it should be re-introduced to the game as a matter of “fairness” — that’s too weak an argument to do justice to the idea.

ANet shouldn’t spend large amounts of resources for the sake of nostalgia for veterans or to introduce old content to new players. It should be because it’s the best use of their time, in the service of making the best, most compelling content they can.

I do agree that GW2 needs more festivals. A nice spread of festivals through the year would do a lot to keep people interested between content updates.

Yeah, I’ve never understood why we go from May to October without a festival (and that used to be February to October).

because the first annual Dragon Bash (June 2013), turned out to be the ONLY Dragon Bash ever. shame, but hey, at least the mini game was recycled into Lunar New Year.

Sorry, I guess I wasn’t clear. I don’t understand why they didn’t introduce something else in its stead.

So all things being equal, if ANet was going to translate into another language for the potential revenue, Japanese would be a far, far better first choice.

The translations are not/would be excluding, even there is the possibility of the two languages receive translation, the question is: Why not?

Because it’s enormously expensive and it slows down development. To change a simple item description, such as “this item is only used for collections” to “this item may be safely sold after unlocking the collection” currently requires translations into five more languages from the original English. Adding two more means hiring another set of people to translate and fixing text bugs or adding skills means waiting for them to finish their work queue.

If it were free to translate, of course they would do it. Since it costs time & resources, there has to be a good business reason. The evidence suggests that this is among many good ideas for which the costs outweigh the benefits.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

It doesn’t have to be complex. All they really have to do is:

1) Have you create your new character. This is done using the normal way. This creates a normal level 1 instance of the character.
2) Copy your existing characters inventory to the new character (rewriting character IDs and packaging up any equipped gear like they do with the level 80 boost).
3) Copy your existing characters name and date of birth to the new character (which preserves the birthday).
4) Delete the old character.

This would effectively overwrite your old character with the newly created one but it would be a new, fresh character with no personal story progression that keeps only a few key elements of the old character (your inventory, name and date of birth).

If they wanted to get “fancy” they could copy other aspects of your existing character (such as map completion and level) to the new one. Again the key is selectively copying some data to a new character. Not attempting to reset an old one.

Edit: actually they should copy map completion and level to the new one. And crafting.

Even though you think it’s that easy to selectively copy data, I’m not sure why you’d think that it’s never occurred to them to try this sort of work-around. This topic (or its cousins) has been around since near launch.

It’s not complicated; there’s just a lot of simple things that need to be taken care of.

Personally I will beat it dead over and over and over again. Then beat it dead even more…I refuse to quit till it gets put into the game.

Not the best strategy if you really want to get it into the game.

I personally have been asking for build templates since the first BETAs. I’m sure ANet’s heard all the arguments. They apparently have good reasons why they haven’t prioritized including them in the game — I get why they didn’t do so at launch; I’m at a loss as to why they aren’t today (since those reasons no longer apply).

So, stick to explaining why the game would be more fun to play, how the community would benefit, and whether you think it would help retain players. Avoid arguing with people who mostly agree agree with you about things that aren’t relevant to the discussion.

Yes we should. I don’t have time to level and fully gear a second engineer I need to be able to just change him from a Charr to an Asura and I’m willing to pay for that change.

I’m willing to pay for a jetpack, but that doesn’t mean anyone can produce one for retail — willingness to pay isn’t a sufficient argument.

It’s just weird that this isn’t an option

It’s just business.

immersion has been used as a false argument for this issue

I would never use that as a sufficient argument.

The problem is the cost — there isn’t an existing switch that resets a character’s race or level. There are literally hundreds of small (and important) changes made to your character as you level & explore. Those would have to be individually identified and flagged as “hold-when-resetting” versus “reset” versus “modify”. Then they’d have to write a script to make the change, deal with the inevitable bugs caused by using a square peg in a smaller round hole, and the even more inevitable customer support issues.

but there’s absolutely nothing that would change in the game that could make a difference with it now that home instances are everywhere and the choices made when creating the characters actually DON’T do anything to the storyline.

I’m not sure why you would say that when there are changes made to the home instance on a per character basis, as well as changes made to the character. (Home instances were always ‘everywhere’.)

Majors have four bonuses, so you need to slot up to 4 of the same rune to get them all; superiors require all six slots to be filled to get all six bonuses.

Raid learning Issue - question for dev

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I think the OP has conflated a bunch of things that relate to mechanics, sociology of groups, psychology of players, and the habits of highly effective (and highly ineffective) players.

It’s always difficult for new players to learn after content has been out for a while. Some veterans want only other veterans, so they don’t have to spend extra time. Some new players expect to be able to jump start to the advanced content (and some can manage it, many cannot). Some veterans get used to doing things one way, when several methods work (and sometimes are superior).

There’s no simple way to change that dynamic, regardless of the awesomeness or terribleness of the in-game tools for getting people together in the same group.

As has always been the case, finding a group of like-minded people works best. That’s why reddit has an entire folder (and discord) devoted to matching people up with other raiders. That’s why many guilds offer training (and many others only train members they have vetted first).

Except that they didn’t “build something for the 1%”. The original design was that no one got anything for XP after reaching max specializations (pre-HoT) or max-masteries (at HoT launch). Due to complaints, they offered the very least reward possible: spirit shards, which people get from all sorts of sources already.

Initially, people got skill points for “level ups” past 80, just as with GW1. Aside from being able to get skills based on XP grind alone rather than completing specific content, skill points also served the same role as spirit shards do now.

So, people did recieve rewards for a very long time. Then they didn’t. Then they did, but not always.

That’s not different from what I stated — skill points were discontinued with the introduction of specializations and their function was split between Spirit Shards (used for forging) and Hero Points (used for leveling). So originally, no one got spirit shards for post-80 XP. ANet turned post-80 XP into a progression-only currency; it no longer was connected with any reward.

We yelled & screamed about that and ANet, for the first time, added spirit shards as a reward for post-80 XP. And it works perfectly fine (and trivially) for core Tyria. It’s only in the HoT zones where non-raiders are locked out, and that’s not because of an intended design; it happened because adding spirit shards was an afterthought and there wasn’t any good way to set that up.

So again, the OP misunderstood — ANet didn’t build in a reward designed for the 10-20% who raid; they tried to fix an issue perceived by everyone and tried to do without redesigning the system from the ground up. It’s an accident, not intentional design.

Please don’t reply with “Whatever suits your playstyle”
And reply with proper responses that can make me consider what I should build.

Also, I’m really wondering if there’s anything I can plan to use my LvL 80 Boost for, not sure if I wanna be using it for this… Don’t think so.

Please don’t ask us to reply without considering your playstyle, because there is no such thing as “best class” for any content in the game without it. Some people can rock a trapper guardian, some can scissors their opponents with a shadowstepping thief, and others can paper over them all with a condi mesmer. And that’s without considering various types of elementalists, engineers, revs, and so on.

If you want the least-effort option, for a build that you can run shortly after using the L80 boost (without getting your elite specialization):

  • Ele: Scepter + Focus — high risk, high damage, high mobility.
  • Condi Mesmer — much feared by everyone who hasn’t played it, due to its high stealth, high sustain, high mobility. (Moves like a dragonfly; stings like a slow-acting venom-laden scorpion.)
  • Condi Necro — decent option for 1v1, if you haven’t unlocked reaper.

Those aren’t necessarily ‘good’ choices for everyone, but they are reasonable options if you want to boost to 80 and just get out there.

It’s not any more unfair than newer players being unable to participate in any of the other parts of the game that took place in the first 18 months or so, including all of the first Living World Stories, the first Halloween (and the second), and so on. It’s among the least compelling of reasons to ‘add’ content to the game.

Ah, thanks for the examples; that helps me understand where you’re coming from.

I think it’s good that people speak “colloquially” — not everyone talks like kings, particular not most of our merry band. Jory is from the streets, Braham is a kid, Rox is a plebe, and Taimi is a teenage wunderkind and in a rush. There’s nothing wrong with contractions.

Additionally, I know you don’t want to bring the voice acting into it, but … as you can see from what you’ve written, it’s critical. Not everyone can pull off formal speech (Jennah: yes; Human PC: no, imo) and similarly, not everyone does colloquial that well.

And some of it is just what we’re used to. US President Jimmy Carter was an expert in nuclear disaster clean up and yet he pronounces “nuclear” as “nuke a lur”. That doesn’t make him uneducated, just southern — that’s “proper pronunciation” in some parts of the world.

And finally, I have a weak preference for “normal people” caught up in epic events rather than the formal speech of Lord of the Rings. I love the books and am a fan of the movies — the high fantasy works in part because of the nobility of the language. I also like Harry Dresden (the TV show actually, more than the books), even though he speaks more like a hard-boiled PI rather than a “real” wizard.

So I understand why you might prefer the traditional sort of speech we’ve seen in other games. I just don’t agree that it’s a bad fit for this game or the particular characters; it’s just different.

REmove the adventure from collection

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

For what it’s worth (i.e. not much), I hate adventures — if I wanted to play console games, I’d own, you know, a console game. So I wish ANet had never added them to the game. However, since they are in the game, I decided to give them all a try. And it’s not as hard as the OP suggests. There are guides and tips out there.

So I’d prefer if the OP opened with, “I’m struggling with adventures and they are blocking my completion of collections. Can anyone help me?” Instead, they’ve made a blanket statement about changing the game based on their perception of difficulty.

Considering the thread title, I don’t think the OP is looking for help, he wanted to express his opinion that Adventures shouldn’t be required for collections and should be removed.

That’s exactly my point. Instead of first looking for help to complete their collections, the OP is asking ANet to change the game.

Since Adventures are a solo-only activity, and are not End Game content, there should be no need for help. You should be able to simply play them and complete them. I don’t need hints or outside information to do other events in the game. Why make Adventures so difficult that people need outside help?

Not that I want to do Adventures in the first place. I want to play an RPG, not mini-games. So I agree that no mini-games should be required for content that is not mini-game oriented.

Some people don’t need any hints or tips; some need hints & tips for practically everything. There’s tons of content for which plenty of people haven’t learned all the tricks.

In short, it’s got nothing to do with “end game” versus “solo” content. Hints & tips are for any sort of content, for any sort of player, whenever it’s something outside their comfort zone. Clearly, Adventures are outside the OP’s preferred content, just as dungeons are outside other folks’ preferences and both are needed to finish collections and/or forge shinies.

There’s little point in making any content too easy and little point in making it too difficult, however, there’s no magic balance point in which content is just right for everyone. Adventures are most difficult for those of us who don’t like them by their very nature, including myself and the OP.

In the end, it’s a design decision. I wouldn’t have made the choice, but I can admit that’s my hangup and respect what ANet was trying to do. (Even though I think it wasn’t very successful: too much push back from detractors relative to how many ardent fans — then again, I don’t have any data; that’s just my impression.)

As I’ve said before, I hate adventures; I wish they were never added to the game. However, they are in the game and they aren’t going anywhere. Best to make one’s peace with that and enjoy the game as it is (or find another game one likes as much, where the downsides aren’t as important).

Unless you have word from Anet that Adventures aren’t going anywhere, there is no foundation for this statement. Developers have removed content from MMOs plenty of times. Anet removed the Personality system for instance.

ANet took 2 years to remove the personality system and only did so as part of a larger initiative that made huge changes to leveling; it’s a poor example of the sort of thing that you mean.

But even so, I don’t need word from ANet about Adventures — those who want to complete collections this year (or next) need word that ANet has plans to do something with Adventures. It’s completely unrealistic to imagine that ANet could decouple them from collections (and masteries, since they’d tackle them together) without a year’s worth of lead team: several months to redesign the systems, months to test & rebalance rewards accordingly, time to implement, and a window in the release schedule to launch the change.

In other words, it’s not changing any time soon. Those, like myself, who hate adventurers and want to complete collections have to accept the game as it exists; pretending otherwise is going to lead to intense frustration.

It’s not going to be much under 800 gems because: (a) it would cost ANet resources to develop the ability to do this and (b) there aren’t any similar services available for any less. (The makeover kit is cosmetics only; it doesn’t require returning a character to ‘start’.)

Accordingly, one might as well create a new character: you get the benefits of the birthday, you can park the mid-tier toon at a JP for some modest amount of mats, and you can store overstock of mats etc, & you get a new toon. All for about the same as what this feature would likely cost.

That’s a good point. I guess 400 would probably be what it’d have to cost to be worth not just making a new character. Not sure if that works compared to the makeover kits, but remember that it’d start you over at level 1, so it’s not quite as attractive to most people as a total makeover.

The name change contract is 800 gems and “all” it does is change a toon’s name. Rebirthing would require a lot more work by ANet to develop the infrastructure (there are lots of visible and behind-the-scenes changes that take place as a character levels; they’d have to design a system to account for redoing that… or not redoing aspects).

In other words, you’re looking solely at this from “what price would players be willing to pay” versus how much is it going to cost ANet to make the feature available.

It’s a desirable feature; it’s just not very realistic that it will be implemented anytime soon.

On the one hand it seems like something that should be done but on the other hand it probably affects less than 100 players.

It affects a lot more than 100 players. According to GW2 Efficiency, about 1% of folks who have clocked 4000+ hours have at least one. There are about 10-20 listed on the TP at any given moment and roughly 10-20 are sold/month.

Regardless, ANet doesn’t seem much inclined to address this any time soon. There are auras attached to infusions (that cannot be used with exotic gear) and auras attached to jewels (that cannot be used with ascended). They’ve changed ascended amulets to take “enrichments,” but haven’t released any auras associated with those.

This! In fact, there’s simply no excuse for leaving it the way it is. You don’t build something for the 1%, and then lock the other 99% out of rewards simply because they choose not to raid.

It wouldn’t be so bad if only the HoT zones were the only ones locked out. That would be just one bad idea stacked onto ten other bad ideas. But, all LS3 zones are also locked out, and that’s not acceptable.

Except that they didn’t “build something for the 1%”. The original design was that no one got anything for XP after reaching max specializations (pre-HoT) or max-masteries (at HoT launch). Due to complaints, they offered the very least reward possible: spirit shards, which people get from all sorts of sources already.

It happened that they had linked raid masteries to HoT masteries (because it didn’t originally matter in the least), and so they were in a situation in which they would have had to overhaul the system to leave raid masteries out of the updated system. This way, they could deliver this nearly-negligible reward sooner, rather than “sometime”.

So sure, they should allow non-raiders access to more spirit shards. But I think they are right to treat this as a long-term goal rather than an urgent issue.

The purpose of this post is to let Arenanet know that the time limit on items is too short.

Except that’s merely your opinion. I convert gold to gems often enough that I always have gems when something interesting goes on sale. And if I’m not playing often enough to be around for every sale, well, I don’t mind missing out because… I’m not playing often enough.

Limited-time sales are a common method of generating interest. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but that doesn’t mean it needs to change.

Just seems illogical, that one day you can go from synthing 18 ore, 18, wood, 5 leather, 5 cloth and 15 plant, then next day because u work hard to finish the second workshop you go down to 10 ore, 10 wood 3 cloth, 3 leather and 9 plants.

It’s logical if you focus on the programming — you an gather once from each node with a unique ID; the nodes of the same tier share the same ID, no matter in which guild hall they are located.

I have friends who have deliberately avoided upgrading synthesis so they can farm extra times. Me… well, I’m glad in a way, because this way I spend more time playing and less time gathering.

Just keep at it.

This was the only specialization RNG drop that took me a long time to get. Friends found it in 2-3 kills; for me, it was over 50 before I stopped counting. In the original HoT, there weren’t that many tigers and the respawn times are slow, so even if the odds are identical to the other items, it feels as if it takes more kills.

It’s working as intended — you can gather from one node of each type and level per day; it’s only indirectly related to having maxed the hall (since a maxed hall has identically upgraded nodes).

I haven’t spent a dime (or shilling or deci-Euro) on the gem shop; we can all convert gold to gems as often as we like.

Also, try not to worry about the hype or marketing language used in the gem shop: it’s hype and marketing, not a contract. For example, certain dyes are advertised as ‘exclusive’, when they are available to everyone (they aren’t even exclusive to the dye packs that randomly drop them, since you can unlock many via the Guaranteed Wardrobe Unlock and birthday presents).

It’s just a way to drum up enthusiasm and urgency, the same method used by advertisers for hundreds of years. (Non-GW2 examples: Iceland is greener than Greenland & stainless steel can stain.)

You think there’s too little for casual players to do after leveling to 80 in GW2/core or GW2/HoT? I can’t agree.

Since the topic is HoT HC’s, and some of the HoT HC’s require the defeat of Champions, why talk about core?

So don’t talk about core. I asked about both /core and /HoT. You think there’s too little for casuals to do in HoT? I still can’t agree.

You’re right. There is no point. I guess I was trying to make my actions feel worthwhile where they are not.

How are your actions not worthwhile? Aside from leveling characters and unlocking masteries, what exactly do any of us want with XP? At best, people get extra spirit shards, but nearly everyone earns those faster than they can spend. (And I’ve even tried to spend them in bulk at one point.)

I’m in favor of ANet adjusting the system, so that raids aren’t a bottleneck. It just doesn’t seem like it’s all that urgent, since such a change would have relatively little impact on anyone’s gaming.

Dialogue in GW1 & GW2 has always included the serious, the jocular, and the cheesy. Some of the voice actors are so good they make ordinary text sound tremendously important; others are so bad that epic dialogue about epic events sounds like someone worried about the density of chocolate sprinkles on their ice cream.

Without specifics, it’s impossible to agree or disagree with the OP’s critique. More importantly, it’s impossible for ANet to do anything about it, without specifics.

What lines do you think are immature now? What older bits of dialogue do you think were more mature?

Anet heard a kitten ton of complains anyway, I think (and hope!) they will do it better with next expansion.

Will they? I’m worried about the total lack of response from Arenanet to the adventure and mastery point feedback of the players. The only thing they did was to make the worst offenders a bit easier, but the general design was not reworked. But it’s the design that is frowned upon. At least from me.
Hope is all that is left, but for hope alone I will not buy the next expansion.

They’ve responded many times — they made substantial changes in the difficulty and accessibility of the adventures & the difficulty of some hero challenges.

The fact that they didn’t rework the general design isn’t an indication that they haven’t responded to feedback; it’s an indication that not everyone agrees there’s a major design problem.

As I’ve said before, I hate adventures; I wish they were never added to the game. However, they are in the game and they aren’t going anywhere. Best to make one’s peace with that and enjoy the game as it is (or find another game one likes as much, where the downsides aren’t as important).

The human stories are dull I found the human stories to be dull. I think the most interesting are:

  • The charr ones — more interesting NPCs, tasks, and more creative sort of quests.
  • The asura ones — the asura are just fun: fun voice actors, crazy situations, and interesting dilemmas (although the tasks are pretty standard).
  • The sylvari — the most “alien” of the races imo. And it’s especially interesting in retrospect, once you go through the Living World stories.

edit: rephrased to clarify this is my opinion; your mileage may vary (void where prohibited, etc)

I have no objection to the OP expressing their preference. Other people are expressing theirs.

It was working before. The mystic forge is just wonky sometimes about certain recipes. Things that successfully work around the occasional glitch include:

  • Changing the order you add to the forge.
  • Choosing the the four ingredients, despite being greyed out.
  • Closing game/restarting.
  • On a different toon.
  • Using a different node (e.g. if you tried LA before, use the one in WvW)
  • Try again later.
