Ppl are quiting left and right

People have been quitting left & right since launch, unless you think that there were more people playing when HoT arrived than during September 2012.

There isn’t any single reason that numbers have dropped — the biggest one is that no game can sustain every player for 5 years (it’s remarkable that there are any that do). People leave because the game changed, because it didn’t change, because it changed too quickly, because it changed too slowly.

REmove the adventure from collection

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Oh no no no no no, I want others to suffer the same way I suffered to get there.

There are two extreme points of view and I haven’t seen anyone expressing either in this thread:

  • Everyone has to suffer to complete optional tasks in the game.
  • No one should have to stretch to accomplish optional tasks in the game.

Instead, the OP (and others) don’t think it should be that hard while others are saying, maybe it should be difficult. Those are both reasonable points of view; let’s try not to dismiss them because we disagree.

For what it’s worth (i.e. not much), I hate adventures — if I wanted to play console games, I’d own, you know, a console game. So I wish ANet had never added them to the game. However, since they are in the game, I decided to give them all a try. And it’s not as hard as the OP suggests. There are guides and tips out there.

So I’d prefer if the OP opened with, “I’m struggling with adventures and they are blocking my completion of collections. Can anyone help me?” Instead, they’ve made a blanket statement about changing the game based on their perception of difficulty.

Cooldown on crafting Grandmaster Marks, why?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Hmm, is there a point to crafting these things? They seem to require a ton of materials and it seems just as expensive as just crafting it.

Re-review the mat requirements for both methods; it’s drastically different.

  • Traditional crafting requires a specific “activator” (e.g. Powerful Blood or <gasp> Maguuma Lily); the GM-Mark uses an identical blend of T6 mats.
  • Traditional crafting requires more T2-T4 cloth, leather, & armor.
  • Traditional requires T7/vision crystals; GM-mark does not.
  • Traditional requires learning new recipes for each stat combination; GM-mark requires the same recipes for all stats. (Traditional recipes include the recipe for the gear plus the insignia|inscription, which might also require learning an exotic equivalent.)

So as a rough rule of thumb, GM-Mark method drastically reduces the costs for several stat combinations, somewhat reduces the costs for a few others, and rarely is more expensive. It’s also requires less advance planning (in terms of recipes or MF-forge conversions).

Sorry, I was requesting if it could be implemented sometime in the future.

Almost for sure, this isn’t an option they’d be able to manage anytime soon. They’d have to entirely recode how headgear is applied and redesign every piece of headgear (with more minor changes for gear that wouldn’t have the option, major changes for those that would).

What this is suggesting is just an easier way for the Guild to build revenue without really affecting anyone or reminding or bugging people to donate.

And I’m saying: I think that’s a bad idea. What sort of guild is it if leaders aren’t willing to encourage people to donate and/or there aren’t folks willing to do so? Guilds don’t exist to build a guild hall; the guild hall exists to help build the community.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I never insta-sell. Never. There’s always someone willing to pay more. So the question is: how much time are you willing to wait to earn the extra dosh?

If you look at the TP history, you can see that four have sold or been relisted over the last 3 months, compared to 9-10 being offered. Similarly, 8 have been bought (or people have dropped offers) compared to 25-28 offers.

That suggests to me that (a) not many people even know it’s available and (b) some of those folks are trading them.

Accordingly, I’d aim for a middle price. Here are some suggestions:

  • 99.99.99 — very likely to sell ‘soon’ & you’d net an extra ~9g without effort.
  • 119.99.99 — nearly as likely to sell quickly & you’d net over 100g, which is a tidy sum.
  • 174.99.99 — the halfway point between the highest WTS and lowest WTB over the last 3 months; it’s likely to sell at that point and you’d nearly double your net (148g vs 76g)
  • 239.99.99 — slightly less than 80% of the current WTS, it’s low enough that it would be profitable to flip (although savvy investors wouldn’t attempt that). I find it’s often a reasonable price point for low-volume, high-cost items.

You have to decide how much risk you’re willing to take to earn 10g more versus 100g more, versus the sure thing.

Better to craft or buy Dawn ?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I strongly recommend the following:

  • Those concerned primarily with gold should simply buy the precursor on the TP (regardless of what GW2/efficiency or other sites report).
  • Those interested in the legendary journey should always complete the collection.
  • Those who aren’t sure should complete the first tier of the collection (generally the cheapest & quickest step) to see whether how the feel.

Generally speaking, the first group is always disappointed in the collection & resents many of the material sinks. And as it turns out, the amount of gold saved by following the collections is often eclipsed by the addition time spent tracking down the scavenger hunt elements. That is, if you factor time & effort, it’s not necessarily cheaper.

In short, buy off the TP.
(That’s for the OP; for other readers, your mileage will vary.)

Since the events are linked, it would be helpful to show both progress bars in the event panel.

However, the enraged mechanism is hardly ever the deciding factor in whether they wyverns are brought down or not. Both events succeed if defiance is broken a couple of times (and even just one break nearly guarantees success). So I think it’s more important that we, as players, help others to learn how to make that happen, rather than wait for ANet to adjust the UI.

Option to toggle boosters on and off

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

PVP boosters need to only count down DURING PVP matches. Literally over half of the duration of these boosters can be lost waiting for PVP matches to pop, for people to click accept, map selection, map loading, etc. Unlike in any other mode, we have no ability to do anything to conserve the duration, ie we can’t wait to pop until match does because a) the duration is ALWAYS longer than a single match and b) you aren’t allowed to start them inside a PVP arena.

Which boosters are PvP only?

And you’re mistaken to think that it’s only in PvP that people spend time waiting. I’ve “lost” plenty of food & utility duration to waiting in PvE & WvW for people to finish arriving, discussing strategy, changing gear, changing skills. Plus, in WvW, most of one’s time is spent outside of combat, not inside.

The system isn’t perfect & it would be nice to have some control of how much is wasted. Still, this isn’t a PvP-specific issue.

It also depends on a lot on what sort of content you do & how often — some areas supply a lot more salvageable items than others.

ANet staff have commented on this a few times (none recently that I recall). Each time, they’ve said more or less the same things: they’d definitely like to do something, but it’s more complicated than we think. For example, gear stats & upgrades (e.g. runes) are critical to builds, so how should they be handled? What sort of UI would there be? How many builds can be displayed?

My hope is that they’d stop worrying about the “right” solution and get working on a “right now” system. Perhaps just displaying the builds, so you can manually edit to match.

Regardless, it’s on their radar; it just doesn’t seem to be enough of a priority to have made it into the game in the last 5 years.

Guild Bank Updates/Suggestions

Stacking doesn’t work because the guild bank is shared — one person might be moving or removing an item at the same time someone else is trying to add to it. Although it’s possible to set a series of filters to prevent issues when this happens, it is a lot simpler to set up Guild Storage to work differently.

I’m sure every guild would welcome more shared storage. On the other hand, most of the stashes I’ve seen are filled with stuff no one uses — it’s just junk that players don’t want to delete or sell on the TP. There are other improvements I’d prefer to see first.

I can understand that it bothers player to see a tiny fraction of the community leaving toons in one spot while the player is watching a movie or doing their homework. That doesn’t mean it meets ANet’s definition of AFK farming. Even when that threshold is crossed, it’s up to ANet to decide if it’s an issue.

Do Gathering Bonuses No Longer Work?

The buffs:

  • Guild Gathering Boost — From banners. “Increase change to find rare materials from mining, logging, and harvesting by 10%” & there’s a 15% version.
  • Guild Gathering Boost — From Bartender. "Increase chance to find rare materials from mining, logging, and harvesting by 6-20%. "
  • Power of the Mists, Gathererformerly from WvW. “2-3% chance of additional gathering node uses”
  • Gathering Boost — Bonus effect from gathering booster. "Gain 10 seconds of swiftness when gathering. 33% chance at extra resources when gathering. "

As you can see, only the WvW/Power of the Mists buff affects how many tries you get. There’s always a chance that we can get extras (more than 3 from metal/wood, more than one from plants), but it used to be 15-20% higher Wed-Fri than it was Sat-Mon. That is very, very noticeable in its absence.

It would be nice if ANet decided to up the baseline for the non-combat buffs (plus to gathering tries, to crafting, and to XP gain), but I doubt they’d spend the effort to try to balance this change against other rewards.

Additions to Material Storage

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

No Piles of Silky Sand. Just consume them, geez.{

Well, if you just could consume them. You need a stack of 10 to consume them. Without the storage you have to manually transfer them between characters to consume them, and still keep some leftover most of the time. Adding them to storage would solve this.
Alternative solutions have been mentioned in the thread – e.g. changing the item so that every single one can be consumed.

The point is that you don’t need to store more than a stack, just a few at worst. Since the number of items that can be allocated to the material panel (and since items can’t be removed), it seems prudent to leave this one alone.

In PUGs, you shouldn’t assume anything about their experience, their habits, or even that they are ready to start. You seemed to have assumed that everyone approached the puzzle the same way you do.

There are just two important considerations to manage the wisps:

  • knowing the route and how to avoid the hazards (or recover from dealing with them)
  • coordinating when you start

The most experienced teams don’t need a ready check. I would assume that absolutely every PUG needs one. Mind you, after the first fail, I would have typed, “wait for everyone to type that they’re ready, please” rather than fail three more times.

ANet: Can’t you please lock the rewards in Guild Wars 2 once it is verified that a GW1 account has these achievements?

That’s how it used to work. Then there was a bug and a lot of people were able to acquire the AP plus the titles, without having earned them and … there was no way to remove them. ANet disabled the titles quickly, fixed the root cause soon after, but it took them 6 months (maybe more) to remove the titles from those who hadn’t earned them.

Writing a script to lock some data is easy enough; making sure that it doesn’t do anything unexpected and doesn’t have horrid consequences in the future is much more difficult.

In other words: it’s certainly possible; it might not be a good idea.

Plus, the circumstances that caused the issue are rare: GW1 has to be down (or at least, part of its server system has to be). That’s something that has an incredibly stable uptime, i.e. it’s nearly always up. As the budding reporter wrote on the final exam to explain how plates of ice can form in the air, “sleet happens” — stable systems sometimes wig out and we just need to be patient about it.

Believe me, I am not someone who cares about meters. I just don’t think the past was any better.

I’ve been around since the very beginning, I’ve seen how things were then and now… and from what I see, atleast on my server, things have gotten much worse. I was even around for day 1 of GW1.

How did you measure how bad things were in GW1? In GW2 at launch? In the original Fractals? In current fractals? For how many hours a day did you look at LFGs or count people who entered and reappeared (suggesting that they might have been kicked)?

We humans are mighty good at finding facts that support our beliefs. It takes a lot of effort to collect actual data and interpret it without bias.

How does that not apply equally to you and the OP? Please… share your spreadsheets with us.

I’m not making a claim about whether it’s worse now or worse then. I’ve only said that the problem has always existed, that it’s not new because of DPS meters.

So, what about builds like the thief that try to nuke me, fail, but don’t get killed because they can just leap away from me?

The bane of every roamers existence to be sure. The only way to win a knife fight with a thief is to bring a pistol. For example:

  • If alone, I run from thieves and port away — I can sometimes win, but it takes forever; I’d rather do something more useful for my world. (PS there are plenty of bad thieves out there, so it’s definitely possible to beat them at their game; I just don’t like it.)
  • If not alone, I alert my party mates to the thief’s presence and we 2v1 — requires at least once of us to be super mobile.

There are just some builds that I can’t beat quickly and some players (well, to be fair, lots of players) that are far more skilled than I. I don’t bother fighting fair — this is WvW, not sPvP, so I’d rather get the kill and be accused of being unable to 1v1 than let the other player prove that they can beat me with their build+madskillz.

Wildstar had two failure points according to NCSoft. One was that raiders didn’t want to go through the lengthy pre-raid preparation the game offered. The other was that once leveling was over, there was nothing for solo players to do. The devs tried to correct both issues when the game started to falter, but it didn’t work out so well. Developers cheesing off solo players is generally not good for the game’s financial health. There’s too much competition.

For those not wanting to follow the link, the top five are China, USA, Japan, Germany, UK, and Korea. Brazil is #13; Portugal ranks 36.

Unfortunately, the company doesn’t include their detailed methodology, so it’s hard to know how well the presentation applies to MMOs or RPGs. If we assume that the revenue numbers can be compared apples-to-apples (which is probably false: Korean gamers seems to prefer a different sort of game than those in the US)…

  • North America revenues total 30138 million dollars.
  • Brazil revenues are 1338 million, about 4.4%
  • Japan is 12545 million, about 41%

So all things being equal, if ANet was going to translate into another language for the potential revenue, Japanese would be a far, far better first choice.

Were you around when the only dungeon being farmed was CoF1 and only 4 warriorsand one mesmer, using specific builds, were wanted? I was.

There are builds like this Ranger and Theif builds that allow the player to lock others down and destroy them quickly. The only way for me to avoid this is to slot “escape” skills, which then reduces my ability to apply dps.

That’s exactly what happens in a balanced game: the ranger or thief has committed to an approach that depends on their ability to lock & burst; your ‘meta game, roaming edition’ is to bring a build that can resist that. Meantime, they are vulnerable to battles-of-attrition, because an equally-skilled player that can break the lock is going to hurt them.

It’s like a complicated version of Rock Scissors Paper — if your build is just Paper, you’ll be shredded by any Scissors you encounter, but you’ll be OP’d vs Rocks.

I don’t mean to suggest that things are perfectly balanced. I just mean it’s not sufficient to say, “this guy ganked me before I had time to blink”. One the worst fights I had was when I was 2v1 against an anti-stun warrior build — I had a power chrono & my buddy was running condinecro and we were toasted. The warrior didn’t stay stunned (sometimes reversed them against me), timed their dodges perfectly, and took their time getting in one good hit every 5-6 seconds.

I had no idea what happened, so I posted in the warrior forum describing what I observed and asking if anyone caught the license plate of the truck that hit me (over and over again). People gave me the names of the relevant traits & utilities and the next time I went out, I was better prepared. (Mind you: on my best day, I’m still not as skilled as that guy is on his worst.)

tl;dr the place to start is by understanding what other players bring to the fight and rebuilding accordingly.

This happens whenever GW2 can’t talk to GW1. It will resolve itself or you can connect to GW1 manually with your linked account, and enter the game with any character; that should take care of it more quickly.

Your titles and AP aren’t “lost”, just AFK.

Exactly, just lost 550ap and received a in-game mail about issue.

I’m sorry that you have to deal with this issue again, but you didn’t “lose” the AP; it will be back as soon as GW1 can communicate properly with GW2 again. Wait it out. There’s nothing that ANet can do in the short term that will make this better (and the long term solution requires them figuring out why GW1 is going down).

Map completion ought to be solo play for the vast majority of players.

Why is that? Shouldn’t the emphasis in an MMO be on groups, whether PUGs or guilds or in between?

In general, the majority of players play MMOs as single player games. If they can’t simply show up and do it, they’re going to skip it. People simply don’t want to waste their time, which is why for example most people don’t bother with dungeons, yet WoW’s LFD (queue up and play) opened them to the majority. Events were originally designed for this, to naturally group solo players together as they played, but then they went zerg happy during season 1, which clearly influenced the design of HoT. They somehow failed to realize however that it only worked in season 1 because it was temporary content and thus always active. Group content is simply not sustainable – see the empty mid-level maps, or even the old current events, and imagine HoT in a few years. If they want to continue with bigger events, they would be far better of by splitting them from the maps and having you actually queue into them.

By making 1 single element of map completion group content, that means there’s no point in doing any of it. They’re only encouraging people to skip through the maps, though most likely would regardless. ArenaNet should already know what didn’t work however, since they have the numbers.

Shouldn’t the emphasis be on groups? They call those co-op multiplayer, whereas MMOs are simply virtual worlds with other people in them. MMOs were once group-only years ago, but then WoW cracked the market by being solo-friendly, yet still offering group quests, which later turned out to be a waste of resources as they had to rebalance them for solo play. Nowadays, most simply appeal the majority by making almost everything solo content and balanced for the casual players, as in easy mode. GW2 however is oddly going in the opposite direction, but it doesn’t matter as much as long as you play it while it’s active.

and challenging group content has only recently been added to the game.

Dungeons were originally called “challenging group content” and people even complained that they were impossible at first, especially back in pre-nerf beta.

It’s true that many people considered dungeons to be difficult at launch, but that doesn’t mean that they were considered to be “challenging group content” — they were 5-person instanced content and more challenging than the personal story. Guild missions came later and haven’t been updated in ages. We’ve had world bosses and… not much else designed for larger groups.

And I simply don’t agree with your contention that most people want to solo the game. I think many (perhaps most) people genuinely enjoy doing stuff with pick up group. It’s one of the great features of this game that everyone gets the same rewards, rather than having to share or divide it up. That means it’s often in everyone’s advantage to do stuff with others, and it can be a lot more fun.

So I think it’s not only fine, it’s a good thing that there are some champions and hero challenges. Maybe a few are too difficult and/or maybe there shouldn’t be as many.

I do understand why you don’t agree (or at least, I think I do). However, I don’t agree that it’s inherently better for the game or its community for more content to be soloable — I think that might even make things worse.

Dwayna knows there’s very little that’s rewarding in this game for solo play as it is, and there’s tons of rewarding content for groups.

On the contrary, nearly everything in the game is solo content and challenging group content has only recently been added to the game.

Although I suppose, we probably have different definitions of “solo play.”

Thanks for taking the time to explain.

I still disagree — I think that splitting up the lore aficionados dilutes the value of the lore-related forums. And as Jafw said, the forums aren’t nearly as active these days.

Citadel of Flame needs Rework

The design itself is not inherently flawed, but the dialogue and in-game text needs to be reworked so that the player doesn’t need a guide to know how to play the dungeon.

Games, including this one, have always been set up so that some things are explained in detail… and some are left for us to discover on our own. That was the case with dungeons originally, in that the overall goal is explained, but it was never meant to be explicit.

So we’ve always had the choice: figure it out on our own (as me and some of my friends prefer to do) or look it up in a guide (as others prefer).

So unless you can offer specific examples of the in-game text being wrong relative to the mechanics, I don’t agree that they need a rework.

There’s “not explained, have fun finding out” and the there is “there is no clue you have to stand in these 5 places and not move or the enemies will spawn infinity”. One is fun, the other is literally a half hour and multiple rage quits before someone showed up who knew what was going on.

What’s the difference between “before someone showed up who knew what was going on” and alt-tabbing to look it up in a guide? Clearly, it wasn’t fun for you to figure it out (at least, not this dungeon in this game), so I’m not sure why you’d want to try for half an hour.

However, just as clearly, someone else figured it out using the same clues available to you — otherwise, no one would have every run any dungeon path and there wouldn’t be a ton of guides available.

The thing is there’s no such thing as a perfect balance between “too hard for some” and “too easy for some” So even if ANet diverted resources to adjusting dungeons, they still be as likely to make things worse as to make them better.
