The Never Ending Repertoire of Ranger Builds
Salt of the Earth {SALT} Crystal Desert© ~~Dragon Rank~~
I really wish I had talked to the guy and asked about rune choice. It was late at night and I was tired. He was using the grey wolf. It’s possible it was from a rune set he was wearing. I did pm him and ask if he was wearing Sigil of Fire and he did say yes. So if after some testing with Sigil of Fire and no results…it had to of been from a rune set? I haven’t been able to play for a couple of days
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMAQNAV8fjEV11xVKWo2Bg2jMlET2DDd8RXhRLYTF;TsAg2CsosyYlwKrVOrkWt8YUxeBA
This build is and has only been used by me in a pvp environment, so that is where my talking point are going to stem from.
The goal of this build was to take some of the survival of a bunker style build and combine it with the damage of traps (I’m referencing a triple trap pvp build, like the one posted by Java on team pz, or run by gasmask on his stream).
Personally, I think that having 28% (says 29, must be ceiling’d) crit chance, with 35% crit damage outputs its fair share of consistent damage while still critting often enough to proc bleed on crits. The condition damage isn’t the highest to begin with (bleeds only proc around 91-92) but the strength of the build comes from burning, which still hits for 572 per tick. Any additional condition damage needed is gained through stacks of corruption. Gaining 25 stacks in tpvp may be considered harder than in hotjoins to some, but it is still a potential increase of 250 condition damage, and when added to this build, only makes it that much stronger/more versatile.
People may immediately notice their are no stun breakers and consider the build not efficient. However, as with a triple trap build, the stuns are dealt with through evades and Shared Anguish/Hide in Plain Sight.
The heal is always a controversial topic (some people prefer troll unguent) however, the strength of a trap build in spvp is that it can bring something to a team fight, and healing spring is the best water combo field in the game, so even if people are comboing through it, you are still using an AoE condition remover with regen procs.
The loss of the poison trap is noticeable at times, but rangers have more than enough poison options on weapon skills to compensate for that, and the 100 regen per second on a trap build isn’t anything to scoff at.
So basically, try this out if you haven’t. I’m not saying it is better than any other build out there, as I am testing it myself, but this setup seemed to be a good way to combine the strengths of two of our most viable builds (in pvp).
Edit: Forgot to mention, the tooltip in the builder doesn’t update, but the regen is exactly 100 from Signet.
Just want to say that I have been testing your build and I like it so far. I’ve only been playing it for an hour or so and in hot joins only. I will probably tweak it slightly to fit my play style then get back to you with feedback. Thanks for the share.
That was the first thing I thought of. I didn’t see any Spirits out. Now that doesn’t mean that there wasn’t one hiding around a corner…but I definitely didn’t see one. I stayed on that server for 3 or 4 rounds following him, trying to figure out he was doing it. I finally pm’ed him asking if he was using Sigil of Fire, he said yes.
I’m not sure if this is something I missed over the last 30 ranks or if this is something new. Last night I was fighting a ranger who had the Longbow /w Sigil of Fire equipped. His pet(wolf) was proc’ing a Fire Blast on some of his attacks. I made sure that it wasn’t from his bow by running around a corner and letting his pet follow me and sure enough when he hit the Fire Blast animation hit and I had 1.5 seconds of Burning condition on me. Is some of the Sigil bonuses carried over to our pets to a ninja buff?
I haven’t updated the link yet but instead of Sigil of Energy, I use Sigil of Water. I don’t consider SB as my main bleed proc. Dagger 5 and Sharpening stone far outweigh SB’s bleed duration. Once those land, all it takes is one proc of SB bleed to restart the 10+seconds duration. As for Ravens, I used to run Owl and the black Raven but I like the 6 second cool down on both of my birds. I’m able to land an F2 twice before pet swapping. I appreciate the suggestions.

I wanted to share a couple of videos of my current BM HYBRID build. Some would say its not even a hybrid of the common BM build. Some say it is. I’ll let you guys decide. The first video is in a tPvP match. I had a couple of 1vs1 and 1vs2 scenarios so you guys can get an idea of its survivability while still being able to dish out damage through conditions.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMUQNAsYVjEV11ZWKWoWCi2jMJpzzKco/h07PMqS2VBA;TsAg2Croay0koJbTumkNtaY4xcDA
This is my first time using Movie Maker so I messed up on the music volume on the first video.
The second video is me dueling.
I’m hoping for feedback along with suggestions. If anyone knows how to use a MSI Afterburner correctly without it freezing let me know. Right now if I put it at 16:9 720p or higher it freezes the game.
(edited by ItIsFinished.9462)
And videos about 1on1s are pretty bad to show off how good the build actually is.
I disagree. I have many hours of nothing but duels under my belt and because of that, I have increased my skill level against 1vs2 and 1vs3 situations. I have every class mechanic down due to duels. When I’m going 1vs2 in a Tournament and trying to take a node, I know when to back off and go elsewhere. I know my characters capabilities and other class capabilities due to duels. I can’t tell you how many times I have been challenged by a WvW zerger to a duel. 90% of the time they lose. There character skill level is below par. They have this ‘zerg’ mentality. When they are out in the open all by themselves, air to there back and nothing but hand/eye coordination they crack under the pressure.
As for Chronix and his video, he’s an excellent player. The opponents in the video I have no idea of there skill level.
Chronix, was this what you were running last night?

Create also a small statue in the middle of the room . By channeling for 5 sec activates <<sudden death>> mode . Staring a flame wave from the outside of the stadium to the inside , slowly , expanding 10% of the size of the stadium every 3-5 sec
Edit: Unblocable damage , so Engineers dont benefit from the 2x Elixir S
Nice.
Different arena types with different <<sudden death>> modes. Example, a floating/flying arena with ledges. Or an arena with crumbling ground that breaks with lava.
Also; what about the fact that fight dynamics between 2+ people are weird. If two people get downed then the third person will probably get targeted by both players and eventually one of the first two will rally and defeat the third.
It would make it intense when it gets down to the remaining 3-5 players. Which would be fun.
I can see the dominance of the “wait in respawn until elite is off cooldown” strategy now.
If elites were different (smaller cooldowns / less overwhelmingly powerful) then maybe it could be fun.
Hmm, the cell’s floor opens every 5 seconds then and forces you out of hiding.
I propose an Arena that offers 1 vs ALL! You start out in a cell as do the other 19 players, shaped in a dome/circle type of arena. The arena would be about twice the size of the Lions Arch statue center. When the gates open, everyone is on there own. You get 3 lives/respawns and the person who makes it to the end wins! Maybe a first , second and third prize chests or even up to 5th place. King of the hill style. No Red or Blue teams. Just straight up PvP.
Thoughts?
So, what now? I’ve accepted the fact that our situation will not improve, if it was going to it would have by now. I’m creating this thread to see if people have any suggestions on viable builds, or at least the best we can do with what we’ve got.
PVE or PVP, if anyone has any effective builds, tips or suggestions I’d be interested to hear what you have. There’s no point complaining and hoping for a magical fix because it’s just not going to happen, let’s see what we can come up with.
Well, I have a few different variations of my current build that I will share with you.
Easy to master:
0/20/0/30/20 – Crit/Vit/Heal type of setup.
0~
20~I, VI
0~
30~IV, VII, XI
20~II, IX
-or-
30/20/0/15/5 – Crit/Heal/Vit or Power type of setup.
30~IV, VIII, XI
20~I, VI
0~
15~VI
5~
-or-
0/0/30/20/20 – Toughness/Healing/Condi – A BM variation setup.
0~
0~
30~III, IX, XII
20~III, VII
20~VI, X
Harder to master:
20/0/30/15/5 – Heal/Condi/Toughness or Power – This build is capable of beating a BM build if played correctly.
20~III, VIII
0~
30~III, IX, XII
15~III
5~
I wont get into details, but I have had success with these setups. Critiques, comments or flames are welcome.
I love how this thread proves that players who mindlessly zerg all day in WvW and claim they are better at PvP. Because they think WvW > sPvP in there minds, but come to tPvP and get ROFL stomped by pro players.
Exactly how much health do they have anyway? Before and after vigorous spirits.
And do they benefit at all from the Ranger’s own toughness or vitality? One would think they would, even the Mesmer clones benefit from toughness, not to mention skills and traits that can give them even more health. Thou that being said, you can generate clones ad-nauseous, so it’s kind of the point that they would have low HP.
Spirits on the other hand, given their 60 second recharge which can’t be shortened, should at least be able to benefit from the Rangers vit and toughness, should they go out of their way to make a tank build. I doubt that’s the case currently, but they should.
I wouldn’t really have an issue with their survivability, if their cooldown wasn’t as high as it is. Thou all that being said, idk how tough they are since I have yet to test them, or if people are just exaggerating.
I agree 100%. Although a Mesmer’s clone is theoretically a copy of the original, it should pull some of the stat configuration from the ‘Cloner’, which it does. On the other hand, if I understand this correctly, the Rangers ‘Spirits’ are conjured by the Ranger as a type of eternal force of the Ranger’s being. The Spirits should then be either invincible since they are in spirit form, or have the same attributes of the Ranger.
One of the “many” pros of being a Ranger is having not lost to a Guardian or Necro yet in a 1 vs 1 duel since I discovered my new build.
I think that if they didn’t die so fast and had a faster casting time they would be viable. And in my opinion, the Sun Spirit is the most viable out of all of them.
Is it me or its the same ? It feels slower somehow.
You are correct. The time between each shot has been increased slightly, but the traveling speed of the arrows I believe have been increased to compensate. I have no hard data or proof. This is coming from someone who shoots 10,000 – 20,000 arrows every night.
By all means this topic is not directed at the quickness nerf or the influx of nerf topics as I believe Zephyr’s Speed should be buffed to 3 or 4 seconds along with everyone else. This topic is written for encouragement that there are more than 2 viable builds. I see a lot of people that think Trapper and BM Rangers are the only viable builds but it’s simply not true. I used to run a 30/30/0/0/10 glass cannon build but had trouble taking guardians and some mesmers down. So I sought out to test new builds that went with my play style and found my current one which is by far better than any GC build.
(edited by ItIsFinished.9462)
Why are people saying their is only two viable builds?
I keep hearing people say their is only two viable builds for the Ranger. That is simply not true. Everyone hops on the forums, reads about the latest builds which has been BM or Trap Ranger builds, and assume those are the only ones. There are tons of Ranger builds to try out and discover. Trap builds have been around since beta……but someone decided to share there ‘trap build’ and now its one of two VIABLE builds.
I personally have 3 variations of my current build that dominates 1 vs 1 and some 1 vs 2 situations, and its not a BM or Trap build. I am always seeing new Rangers hop on these forums and assume(because of misinformation) that there is only two builds that make a Ranger viable. I can guarantee that there are a few Rangers that frequent the forums who have tested countless builds who have NOT shared them because it works for them and they consider there build to be OP and it works for them.
My suggestion is go to the Mists, experiment with the limitless possibilities and tweak them a bit to your liking and play style.
well, before, that one minor trait was capable of up to 13.33% overall damage increase (or 10% untraited) while also giving boosts to a ton of other actions.
I actually don’t see that much of a need to bring this 5 point(!) minor trait back to what it used to be. HOWEVER, there should be some sort of compensation for it. And I do not mean greatsword.Buff spirits, fix sick ’em queue issues, fix some quirky pet ai behaviors, buff longbow #1 or the whole weapon while we are at it.
Then we are talking.
I disagree, they clearly stated that reducing quickness down to 50% to give enemys a chance to react, but at the same time increasing the duration to compensate. All other skills were compensated EXCEPT Zephyr’s Speed. My guess is it was overlooked and they will address it.
Actually, the OP has a good point. While the duration of Quickness was increased for everyone and all of the other quickness skills, it was not for ’Zephyr’s Speed’ in the Beastmastery trait line. Hopefully this will be addressed.
I was just pondering and since I’m at work I can’t test it out but does Signet of Renewal clear conditions from you AND your pet when you are Signet of Beastmaster traited? Anyone try it out?
Edit: I’m wondering when you activate it.
I used to run a build very similar to this (see signature) but had a hard time against condition thieves and bunker guardians. Its excellent against every class except the ones I just mentioned. You have to always be on your toes also accepting the fact that you are very squishy.
I sought after a build that could counter condition thieves and bunker guardians in a 1vs1 or 1vs2 situation and think I have found it. Ill update my signature and link soon.

Haha, rank 24 and have never stepped foot in the trebuchet. Thanks for the reply.
Only on the map ‘Battle of Kylo’ do I see Rangers get points in other increments than other players. I only know of getting 5 -15 points for a player kill, 10-20 points for spot capping and 15 for trebuchet destruction. How are some Rangers getting points like 117, 119, etc?
Why does it spam “uberleetness has targeted squishyelewhoruns247. Hit ‘T’ to assist,” three times when someone targets a player? When I target someone it says it only once. Are people using a third party program?
This is very close to the idea I had in the Dev thread except you would only have one pet out at a time and you would pick it’s ‘mode’. Anyways, would there be a stow option? Because having a pet out at 3000 range would make dungeon running quite difficult by aggroing everything.
Would be sweet if there was a reason to spend my Glory Points…like a Precursor.
This might be a bit radical;
But what if instead of trying to come up with four button presses that finds a compromise between the ease of automation and the control of micromanagement, why don’t we use the Bundle feature of this game to create an actual gameplay distinction between Macromanagement and Micromanagement? That is to say; Your baseline pet would act automatically with a certain competency level, but you’d have an option to go into a finer control scheme anytime you want.Function Skills
F1
Toggle Attack, Return
– “Attack!”/Aggressive mode (pet is on aggro table, attacks anything that hurts the player or it, paths towards and starts attacking any enemy that is selected when you press it)
- “Return!”/Passive mode (pet off aggro table, does not attack anything that hurts the player or it, paths back to the player).F2
Individual SkillF3
Micromanagement BundleF4
SwapPet AI:
- Pet AI uses Family Skill automatically as it currently does.
- Pet AI automatically moves out of Pulsing AOEs. In the Beta Weekends, AI was tested that had Enemy NPCs moving out of a player’s AOE. Grant this to the pet, but omit AOEs that don’t really present a high threat (omit ones within a certain HP threshold, or omit ones that only apply conditions.)Micromanagement Bundle
Replaces your weapon skills with finer pet controls.
1
Family Skill 12
Family Skill 23
Pet Dodge4
Location Toggle
- “Go!” – Gives a targeting reticule where the pet will move to stand.
- “Relax!” – Ends location modeWhile in Location mode;
- The pet does not move at all. No pathing to any targets. F2 Skills fire off at this location.
- The pet is facing the direction the player is facing (much like how in the game right now, spinning your character in place after telling your pet to “Return” will cause your pet to spin in place).
- While traveling to the location the pet will not aggro things on the way.
- If Micromanagement Bundle is dropped, this is automatically toggled off.5
Resurrect Pet
Ranged Channeled skill with an obvious visual indicator (like Mesmer Greatsword #1) and cooldown that only allows you to attempt it once per Swap.Pet AI while using the Micromanagement Bundle;
- Pet Family skill automatic AI use is temporarily suspended.
- Pet no longer automatically moves out of AOE.
This is great Vox. it would be nice to be able to put my pet into a certain ‘mode’ depending on the situation, dungeon, wvw, roaming etc.
I think the best approach is to look at this from a logical stand point. We have to realize that our pet is 20-60% of our DPS, so it needs to be effective in its DPS distribution. So, logically, the pet needs to stay alive. Every situation will warrant a different method to managing your pet. So I propose a simple 4 choice config for our pets:
F2 click once ~ Attack/Single target mode
F2 click twice ~ Attack/Multiple target mode(aoe condition or boon)
F2 click thrice ~ Guard/Single target mode
F2 click fourth ~ Guard/Multiple target mode(aoe boon or condition)F2 click fifth ~ Do not attack (currently implemented)
Basically, you can set your pet to be in 1 of 4 modes. Each pet would warrant specific skills depending on the pet and mode. So for example my Raven could have a whirlwind type aoe on Attack/Multiple target mode(aoe) that drops conditions and a Bear could have a boon type of aoe for the Attack/Multiple target mode(aoe) that way every pet could be used for every situation. I understand that would warrant quite a bit of work, but it would synergize the Ranger and their companions perfectly.
With that being said you wouldn’t have to change any UI elements. Just add a 5 mode toggle to F2. The 5th being a do not attack.
Edit:
I forgot to mention that when a pet is in a guard type stance there defense is raised so they can take more damage but at the same time they do less damage. And all pets have 4 types of attacks anyways, this would just allow the Ranger to proc those specific skills on demand instead of randomly. Also this is good. Really good. It’s a little unwieldy (what if you wanted to switch from mode 1 all the way to 5 really quickly?), but it’s honestly the best one could do with the game engine as it is.
Yeah, switching modes might be a little clunky..I was trying to figure out a way without changing any UI elements.
Thanks for the thumbs up though!
Pro tip: Signet of Renewal then Pet Swap = Profit!
I agree fully on a chance at a Rare or Exotic piece.
I used to run a GC spec and had no problems in 1vs1’s accept when I faced a Bunker Guardian or Condition Thief. So I sought after the right build to be able to counter them. I have found a build but it is opposite of GC, but I can beat Guardians and Condition Thieves now no problem. Tweak your build until you find the right one for your play style.

Another really annoying and, “gets me killed at times”, is the use of “Rapid Fire”; You cannot, for whatever reason you may have, stop the animation or change targets and use another skill UNTIL it is completed.
This one is annoying and leaves me embarrassed. At times when fighting a foe i’ll use Rapid Fire to down the enemy but the enemy is already dead yet i’m still firing 4-5 more arrows at nothing.
The only solution(s) i’ve found that work is to press “esc” or switch weapons (if cooldown is reset). The only thing with “esc” is that it opens the Options menu which sometimes kills me haha. Is there such a button that will “STOP” a skill from continuing?
Or dodge roll.
And i dont mean only in a Spirit focused build..Lets be honest…Players dont think that spirits provide enough buffing for taking a slot in the skill bar of my supportive Ranger.I would prefer some self buffing signet or some shout, even tho that the search and rescue needs some fixing too.
And i dont think even raising by 100% the hp of spirits will work.I think that the real problem in spirits is that they give something small but in a steady timing.
2 sec of protection every 10 sec..Not actually numbers just an example
They way i feel GW2 gameplay i think that this kind of buffing doesnt work well.
I would prefer something like 5 sec of protection every 20 sec,or something like this, cause this might sounds OP.Something big/really helpfull/life saving..but with a long proc timer
Actually, Stone Spirit sits in my first slot. I also trait for the larger proc radius and skill activation when it dies trait. I have been testing out a new build that allows me to take on any class 1vs1 and win depending on skill. My previous build was good as well but I couldn’t beat Bunker hammer Guardians and condi thieves so I sought after a new build and found the one I’m currently using.
Now Stone Spirit is the only one I use during tPvP. Hot joins I switch it out with Flame trap. But having Stone Spirit up gives me about an 80% uptime of Protection with my build which is vital.
Spirits do need a huge buff in my opinion as they are very lackluster at the moment. It would be nice to have health bars as well show up so you could drop a spirit on a point and monitor it’s HP from a distance so you know to manually proc its secondary skill before it dies.
Let’s review: PvE 25/25/0/0/30 berserker / rune of ranger / cats / axe axe and sword warhorn.
I call hax!
For all the Rangers out there that use a Greatsword as their main weapon, which class is it most effective against? Besides running away from fights, I tried it out and couldn’t find any situation to where it was useful.
Last night I threw in 160 Rare Shortbows and received only TWO Exotic Shortbows………..
I have the video of it all at home. I’m at work now so it won’t be until I get home to post it. If you calculate that out it will be around 2% return rate……Obvious bug? Do I need to submit a ticket?
I haven’t looked too much into your build but I noticed you took Beastmaster’s Bond. I tried that trait and noticed it sometimes wouldn’t proc….not sure if its been fixed since the last time I tried it.
Your math is correct but I think the wiki may be wrong. I am getting around 350 health per second with 620 healing power…
Are you talking about the boon “regeneration” or all sources of healing? and do you mean per literal second that you measure or per tick?
I’m not in front of my computer at the moment, but I believe it was per tick…which is per second anyways.
you know that reg tics way faster than 1 per sec ?
Source?
*
According to wiki, the forumula for regeneration is:
5 + (1.5625 * Level) + (0.125 * Healing Power) per second
At level 80 this is:
130 + (0.125 * Healing Power) per secondSo with 1000 healing power:
130 + (0.125 * 1000) = 255 health/second
Your math is correct but I think the wiki may be wrong. I am getting around 350 health per second with 620 healing power…
Don’t forget that Ravens have a Leap Combo Finisher. Also the Raven will not stop to cast Swift if you already have it applied.
Also, every Jaguar skill requires it to be 130 range or closer. The Raven has a 300 range attack.

Thanks guys…a lot of options to choose from. I tried using Xfire last night, but was unable to get the client to recognize GW2 as an installed game. Oh well, I’ll try some of the suggestions above.
What do you guys use to fraps gw2? I know of the 2 common ones, but I am looking for a free one without time constraints. Any suggestions?
What are you guys using to frap your videos?
9. Range effectiveness longbow damage can be just as effective at close range – only the auto-attack suffers from the damage reduction
Has this been verified?
Actually, I think I understand what you were saying.
(edited by ItIsFinished.9462)
Easy first attack damage boost
Signet of the Hunt applies a 16 minute buff to your active pet when used. Yes, 16 minute. Activate it, wait for the relatively short cooldown, then swap it or keep it for the passive. The buff stays until your pet attacks or you swap pets (or dies, but the likelyhood of that before the pet gets an attack off is low).
I thought I was the only one who did this. My Black Raven has taken 60-65% of their health away from thieves and ele’s on first attack.
Edit: Take a Longbow with you on your WvW Jumping Puzzles. Point Blank enemys all day.
