The Never Ending Repertoire of Ranger Builds
Salt of the Earth {SALT} Crystal Desert© ~~Dragon Rank~~
My Ranger build brings all the boys to the yard
And they’re like, it’s better than yours
kitten right, it’s better than yours
I could teach you but I have to charge
Sorry, I had to.
Elementalist: Ability to change Attunements.
Engineer: Wide array of kits and additional abilities dependent on equipped slots skills.
Necromancer: Death Shroud and Spectral Walk
Guardian: Virtues.
Thief: Steal/Initiative and most access to stealth.
Warrior: Adrenaline/Burst
Mesmer: Clones and Shatter abilities.
Ranger: Pets…This is what makes the classes Unique.
But the funny thing is, every class can have a pet…..via racial skills but at the same time, they won’t suffer a damage loss for having a companion..go figure. They are on par with the rangers pets, especially if the rangers pet dies and is on a 1 min cooldown which is close to most racial elites….
I’m quoting myself because I brought this up a long time ago and it is still relevant. Us Rangers have a broken mechanic.
We need to have the ability to use ALL the pets skills on demand. Also, since we are a jack of all trades, we need to make the pets ability’s on par with the other classes.
What I mean is take thief for example, their class mechanic is stealth and mobility. Why not make a series of pets that offer/have access to stealth and mobility skills…just on a smaller scale. Or Mesmer, their mechanic is clones, can we have some pets that offer clone type abilities? Take Engineer, their class mechanic is kits. Lets make the Ursine pets dig up Ascalonian Rifles or Charr mines, allowing us to use a new weapon for a short period of time during combat. These suggestions are simply allowing the ranger to have a “unique” class mechanic.
After all, we are a “jack of all trades” kind of class, right?

Is this video a joke or trolling?
What makes you think it’s a joke or that he’s trolling?
1. Ranger
2. Engineer
3. Elementalist
This is very unclear. Are we talking Quality of Life issues, buffs on said classes, or some overhauls on the way things work? Since I lack this information I will provide a brief summation of what i think needs to be changed.
What is unclear? These are some of the most clear and precise instructions ever written! Here they are again. I even underlined the important part for easy understanding.
Please pick the three professions that you feel need the most help right now and list them in order of priority like so:
Example
1. Profession1 (this needs the most help by far)
2. Profession2 (this needs help, but not more than 1)
3. Profession3 (this needs help, but not more than 1 & 2)
Both builds look solid. Offsetting the extra pet damage by taking 20 points and putting them into Marksmanship, a nice touch. Especially with Piercing Arrows and all those MM Necros and other various AI builds out there.
So a while back I was inspired by a ‘Frost Build’ that was posted here on the forums. Me being a theory crafter at heart and seeing some info on Mad King Runes about might stacking, I thought about crafting a bird bombing irritation type build. So here it is. This is nothing special, it’s not a top notch dueling build. It’s simply a trolling build. Although I have had some great success with it, it doesn’t replace my main roaming build.
I don’t have any videos yet. I should be able to get something up soon But if anyone can think of more ways to troll/harass enemy’s with birds let me know.
I really can’t fathom what kind of field they could possible give to Spike Trap unless they redesign the skill in some way. Its a bunch of spikes coming out of the ground, nothing about that even remotely seems field-like to me.
I could maybe see it create a blast finisher or something. Would be a stretch, but the force of the spikes creating a blast would make a little sense perhaps, and give traps some
interesting synergy with themselves. But a field? I just don’t see it.Very short smoke field is what I can see (about 1-2s) would honestly give us a LOT of use tbh, pretty much could guarantee an escape
If they offered a 1-2 second smoke field, that would create an opportunity for a lot of different builds. Granted those builds would really only be good in 1v1 – 1v8 basically roaming and sPvP for the most part. It would give me a reason to slot Spike Trap even if it wasn’t traited.
Or even Flame Trap – keep it’s current functionality, but add an additional 1 second smoke field at the end of the burning duration….which is kind of what happens when a fire goes out, it creates a lot of smoke.
-Talking about adding fields to traps, maybe.
Taken from GW2wiki: “Finishers can only interact with one initiator at a time. The finisher will trigger on the oldest initiator”
With that being said, having all our traps offer combo fields, every trapper will have to strategically throw his traps in order so that the first trap/or first trap triggered is the one he wants for his combo field. That can become very tricky.
Nobody thinks of hybrid BM AND spirits?
I guess I’ll be posting a build tomorrow. Too many bad builds on forums.
Gah! I know what build you are thinking of posting. I think you should post a variant of that build…or maybe a template to point people in the right direction. It took me a long time to find my build(which is close to yours). That’s too good of a build to release imo…
As a fellow Ranger who doesn’t run a Spirit build in tourny’s, I can say that yes they are stronger than most builds, but the build I use completely decimates them. This build doesn’t offer the same support or as much support to my team as a Spirit build does, but that’s okay if my team wins.
Why not reduce the Passive amount by ‘X’ amount. Then increase the Active amount to ‘X’ amount dependent on either A: the warriors Adrenaline level or B: the amount of conditions on the warrior at the time of Active trigger.?
Reduce the Passive by 50%, Increase the Active by 100%
Passive: 196
Active: 6,550Of course that is with zero gear, zero traits and such. It says SO much about this heal that people don’t even want to use the active part that is HOW broken the passive is.
Having played Warrior and using all of the current meta builds, I would suggest a Passive heal amount of 317 – Base amount with 0 in healing power. Then I would change the Active to 3400 base, 4000 w/ one bar of adrenaline, 4900 w/ two bars of adrenaline and 6100 w/ three bars of adrenaline. Increase the Cooldown by 10 seconds.
-or-
Change Passive heal amount to 330 – Base 0 in healing power. Then change the Active to a 2100 flat heal and 1 condition cleansed per bar of adrenaline. Increase the Cooldown by 15 seconds.
The biggest problem is IMO is actually the active heal. If we reduce the passive without doing something to make the active useful, we are just creating a different problem. Truly the active on this skill right now is in the following place. When I see someone press it I think “No No No don’t do that!” We are discussion some options here so if you want this to be constructive give suggestions towards improving the active. Reducing the passive is easy to do but we will not do it without solving the other problem. Also we will not greatly reduce it because it is giving Warriors a sense of sturdiness that we want their profession to have. Without strong heals, Warriors feel too much like everyone else. Setting them apart with strong heals has been good for changing their playstyle feel, but we agree it needs some tweaks.

I like your build Sol. I switched a few things to tailor to my playstyle. I switched out Primal Reflexes with Sharpened Edges for the bleeds on crit. And for those that haven’t noticed, there is no internal CD with Sharpened Edges. Trap ticks, and Sigil of Intel on LB with Barrage and Rapid Shot create a lot of bleeds on your targets. I also switched out Vipers Nest for Signet of Stone for three reasons: less traps to throw = more DPS from LB, the poison from Vipers Nest is redundant since I am applying it with Serpent Strike, Stalkers Strike and Poison Gas also Sig of Stone provides more defense, not much but enough to warrant a spot.
I also switched Off-Hand Training with Martial Mastery to get the reduced CD on Sword main hand for dodges. The Dagger off hand already has an extremely low CD’s on their skills. I’m using Sigil of Bloodlust instead of Corruption to get my Attack up to 3000. I think 1227 condi damage is enough imo.
And last, I chose LB because I like to throw traps at my enemy stealthed…like a boss!
(edited by ItIsFinished.9462)
One of the ways I try to improve my Ranger in 1 vs 1 duels is by making a character with which I’m having trouble with(in this case it’s against PU mesmers…only the PU type builds) and learn their strategy’s, rotation’s, trait synergy etc so that I can hopefully become better against them.
So as always, I made the character, grabbed the up to date sPvP build that is being touted from the mesmer section of the forums, brought it into all 3 of the main duel servers and all I can say is….easy mode. I won at least at least 85% of my total amount of duels. And keep in mind, I have never played a mesmer in my life. It was right out of the gate easy mode. I honestly couldn’t believe it.
In summary, it seems like the only safe and reasonable counter to a PU type build is having lots of AOE that is being dished out from a distance and decent survivability……we have the survivability but lack the constant AOE burst.
problem with thieves is that if they didnt kill the enemies fast enough their teammates will die. thieves dont get focused because they fight in and out of stealth. i dont think having three thieves in 1 team is good. 1 thief is enough.
It’s hard to say, I’m going off my best SoloQ match which was 34-500….it could have been a fluke too, but once me and the necro got two points, the 3 thieves were literally zerging back and forth between our points and taking people out faster than they could respond. Again, it may have been a lucky match, but having Wunzy, Toker, Chiggs or Ostricheggz on my team in an average match make things pretty easy.
snip
Imo in order from top to bottom, top being the best, and bottom being the worst – Divided by tactic = my list:
~ Dueling – 1vs1 build only ~
~ Capping – Moving from point to point ~
~ Bunkering ~
~ Class Stacking – Best team comp ~
Very nice builds. Your LB + S/W – Condi/Crit build is identical to my bleeding hearts build in my signature.
I will be trying out your Power Tank build for sure.
Ranger(any build but spirits) because of their pets and the ‘player skill level’ required to perform against other classes.
I think its fine how it is now. Although some of what you bring up regarding 4 bunkers vs 2 bunkers has merit, there are also other ways of taking a point. You may need all 5 members to do it but at least you get it done. There is always someone who gets trigger happy and leaves his point for some action, leaving it open to be taken by the opposing team.
My suggestion would be to allow the viewing of each of your team members total stats. Not there gear setup, just there stat totals so you can get more of an idea of who is going to bunker this point, or who is going to team up and take that point etc. And maybe a “role” parameter like the suggestion above.
Anyone else notice how the Borderland Bloodlust buffs don’t affect our pets? I mean, since our pets are part of our damage, certainly it should affect their stats too?
Hey Josh, how about some NPC’s of all races sitting around a campfire telling this epic story somewhere in the Mists starting point. Maybe by the practice golems. I’d visit it a few times a day everyday for sure.
Some interesting thoughts here. Everything you guys are saying makes sense. But a few nights ago I wanted to compare the two so I went into sPvP to do some testing. I grabbed a Clerics Amulet and a Settlers Amulet. I reset my traits to 0 and added 30 points to the Wilderness survival line only. I left the other 40 trait points unspent. My first test was with Torch’s skill #5 Bonfire and a Light Armor Golem. I used Bonfire followed by Sword auto attack. The Golem went down almost twice as fast with the Clerics amulet(power) over the Settler’s amulet(condition). So that test sparked my interest a little and ran multiple test using different weapon combos. the Clerics Amulet came out better than the Settlers amulet in terms of DPS timings. Also another thing to note is if your opponent brings lots of condition removal, than all that condition damage could be a waste.
Any further thoughts? Or maybe a mistake that I overlooked in my testing?
I’m curious to see what the Ranger community thinks would be better in a 1 vs 1 situation versus every other class/build.
A Ranger that is specced for:
What do you guys think?
Man, and I thought I was sitting on a goldmine. Right when I saw your utilities I thought….NOOOOO. Anyways, I have been running a build like this for a month and a half or so. It’s a crazy build. You won’t be able to take on an equally skilled PU mesmer in WvW though. In fact, a well played PU mesmer is probably the only class you’ll have trouble with. Every other class is cake. I approve this build. Also, you can hit 2200 condition damage with WvW guard buff, 25 stacks of corruption, and 6% sigil increase.
Even though the tooltip when you hover over the trait says that it offers regen? Either way, thanks for the quick reply.
Why isn’t the passive regen working when I use this trait? Intended or bug?
I would like input from my fellow Rangers on this new build I have come up with.
I left the Natures Magic trait empty because that will be the new Natures Voice trait. Also, there is no sigil on Longbow because that will be the new Toughness stacking Sigil. 3365 total Armor with 25 stacks and 1500 condition damage. Along with Torment and Bleeds should make this build very interesting. Everything else is self explanatory.
Let me know what you guys think.
Edit: Changed to Mango Pie.
(edited by ItIsFinished.9462)
It says +6 Condition Damage. Is it supposed to be +6%? Also, my condition damage display doesn’t change when I equip a weapon with a Sigil of Bursting. Is it bugged?
I’m curious about this build. Any chance you can put up a video of it in action?
Personally, I prefer SB for skirmishes and duels and LB for everything else. But the funny thing is, the more and more I studied the Dreamer, it made me want to puke rainbows. All kidding aside, if pink unicorns are your thing then go for it. I ended up making Frostfang since it has the same range as Short bow and it can hit up to 3 targets.
Edit: If you time your stealth and knock backs right, you can skirmish with a LB. It isn’t as good as the Short bow, but when mastered, it can be close to it.
Hey guys , I was dead set on playing a trapper with a long bow ever since the longbow got stealth . I had tried rabid gear with perplexity runes and had played that for a while but i disliked the clear lack of pressure i would get from very low physical damage and lack of conditions from the longbow as it is a power weapon.
But for fluff reasons i never could abandon the idea .
So , having experimented with various builds and gear , not least of all with a carrion spirit build in WvW ( which is total trash btw , as are all WvW spirit builds ) , i settled on a rampager and celestial mix . And quite honestly , this has opened up a lot of build opportunities for both PvE and WvW .
So i decided it was time to revisit the longbow trapper concept . Without further ado , here is my build .
Ok , so my reasoning for using this kind of silly setup ? Well , fun and fluff as i have said , and also because for better or worse , condition is the way to go be it hybrid or bunker . I like the longbow in concept even if its lacking .
As for traps , well , alternatives for a power longbow build are what ? zephyr ? its bad . Muddy terrain ? pretty meh for WvW , it can help but .. eh . The list of lacking ranger utilities goes on and on and on .Anyway , this is in concept , and limited practice in WvW that i have had thus far , a control build .
So the usual tactic would be to toss traps between you and the opponent and open up with a throw torch to get a hit . Ofc send the pet ( dual spiders for the immobilization and condition coverage ) to get in combat . Once that happens the opponent will usually start the charge and while that is happening , if there is time , shoot barrage somewhere near the traps or on top of them if it sprung the spike trap or he got immobilized by a spider . You can skip this if you deem there is no time and start rapid fire under fury . Again , the whole channel does around 6000 damage and covering your burn , poison and bleed with vulnerability and more bleeds , and ofc physical damage . As silly as it sounds , this actually does quite a lot of damage . Not to mention you have a distinct advantage at peeling squishies . I have actually taken down some food using hammerrhoid trolliors that had no clue what happened . If he misses his earthshaker , he does not get the condition clear .Against thieves , u want to throw traps and bonfire around yourself and anticipate him coming out of stealth . When he springs the traps , point blank shot him and rapid fire . That will usually send them running . Well if he catches you off guard and stuns you , he can probably down you very fast if you are unlucky .
As i have said , peeling necros , mesmers , engis and elementalists is fairly fun and seeing how you have plenty of control they can hardly catch you if you play i well . The only thing i am actually scared of is the ranger bunker … knowing how good it can be as it is my main build .
Final notes
-dual spiders for condition coverage and immobilization
-poison and spike traps for healing countering pressure and additional area control
-Mad king runes due to power for longbow damage pressure and condition and bleed duration for conditions applied
-sword + torch because you need swords mobility and utility , burning is a good condition and bonfire is in essence a free trap and i have Rodgort :p
-position and control build . Surprises people who think you are a loot bag due to longbow
-you are not a steamrolling hammerrhoid warrior , you can die so do not act Rambo . Keep your distance and strategize
-EXTREMELY FUN TO PLAYTy and enjoy
I know this build can be deadly in the right hands. It’s close to my BHB build. I like the integration of traps, although vipers nest I might swap that out for frost or flame trap since the spiders cover the poison side of things. Otherwise I like it. Hope you post a video of it in action.
And Dulfy would still have a guild up on release day.
That’s the thing, no one would know how to get past the first puzzle. Unless of course they got lucky. The crit rate of getting this dungeon would be 3-5 groups a day for the first couple of days…then it would increase as time goes on.
I would create this magnificent Fractal that consisted of Illusions of past Fractal bosses, with new mechanics of course and two bosses per encounter. The stages to progress in this Fractal would consist of RNG codes for maybe a keypad, or color coded doors/walkways that triggered ‘Doom 2’ style of traps. All RNG. Imagine Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom style of puzzles or how the progression worked in the movie ‘Labyrinth’. Players would have to “stop and think” before proceeding. A challenge of unprecedented scales would await players and would all be by surprise. And if they fail any of the challenges, the Fractal becomes unstable and forces the players out into a normal Fractal that was already in rotation.
What I mean by surprise is this Fractal would have an extremely low chance of popping up in rotation. So rare, that when these 5 lucky players see this Fractal for the first time they will be intrigued…..they will think it was a patch mistake that wasn’t supposed to be released yet…..because it wasn’t mentioned in the patch notes. In fact, no mention of this new Fractal could be found anywhere. It would appear as a mistake. They would then proceed to take in game screenshots, but would be met with a message “Scarlet has cast a spell preventing players from sharing this discovery” or “The Fractal is too unstable to process your request” or something along those lines. Basically, players would not be able to use the built in ‘Print Screen’ ability to take screen shots. But only in this particular Fractal.
So now you have 5 random dudes screaming in map chat in LA that they were ported to this “new Fractal” and no one would believe them because people would be crying “screenshot or it never happened”. Players would start conversing in map chat. Word of this mysterious Fractal would start spreading throughout Tyria, all by the player population.
“The Story is starting to come to life…”
One by one and throughout the week random groups would get to experience this new Fractal by chance and word of mouth of it is starting to spread like wildfire. Players are starting to take screenshots with their mobile devices, etc. Oh what’s this? A new thread section popped up on the Forums out of no where with these reports.(Dev’s could play along acting as in game characters communicating with the player base giving hints on how to progress in this mysterious Fractal).
Players could gather there information on this thread and interact with each other to help progress in this new Fractal. Eventually, more and more people would run into this Fractal by chance and want to progress further. This would create a ‘Living Story’ aspect to the game.
A couple things to note: This Fractal can never show up on first roll to prevent players from “rolling” this new map. Players would have to take notes on paper or by memory. In game screenshots would be disabled. This idea would simply be on a 2 week or 1 month timer. Basically a way to introduce this new Fractal with the Living Story content. After the 2 weeks or 1 month, the Fractal becomes part of the normal rotation.

You know, when they introduce independent Sigil cool downs, and the ability to put two Sigils on 2H weapons, it will introduce a whole new world of build options for us and for other classes.
Basically, all ~on-crit~ sigils will have new life breathed into them, and I predict some combinations will simply be OP. Having a few different builds theorized already, I for one can’t wait.
Can you link to any indication that this will happen? I havent seen this in recent gw2 news, just empty promises at launch to make 2h weapons equal to 2×1h.
You know, when they introduce independent Sigil cool downs, and the ability to put two Sigils on 2H weapons, it will introduce a whole new world of build options for us and for other classes.
When are they doing this? I haven’t seen any mention of that.
You know, I went back through the forums and Reddit looking for the post but had no luck finding it. Basically, I remember reading about a Developer Twitch feed and in chat, a Dev mentioned individual cool downs on all Sigils. There was also a mention of adding 2 Sigils on 2H weapons. I wish I could find those links…
Imagine Sigil of Earth and Sigil of Torment on LB…
That would be pretty sick dude. I’m loving longbow right now lol. Was just hating on it last week too.
Yeah, Longbow is one of those weapons that takes practice to get used to. Are you liking Sigil of Torment more than Sigil of Earth on your particular build?
Nice Build!!! I am working on collecting all the gear to give a full run. I have half and it does work very well with what i have. I was wondering how is this build for soloing camps? Also I know why you are using longbow but have you tried out shortbow?
Sorry for the delayed response, I have been busy in rl. Glad you are having fun with the build. Camps or not too bad. I have the Guard buff so my damage is a bit more on them. Its also easier if you position yourself against a wall/corner and stack them, then just spread the bleeds.
As for shortbow, no, I haven’t tried it with this particular build. I was a big fan of shortbow before the 1200 range nerf. But since it was reduced to the same range as Axe, I switched up. Plus, with Axe you get to run 2 Sigils, and can hit up to 3 times.
Imagine Sigil of Earth and Sigil of Torment on LB…
As always, awesome video Xsorus. I was looking forward to the duel with “the big guns”, necromancer they brought out.

I don’t get this topic. Are you asking to nerf the pet damage because it’s more now after the update?
Can you please link your build again ? tyvm
Sorry for the delayed response, been working longer hours lately. Anyways, here’s the build information Chokolata : http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMUQNBHhNakoKzOyywi1OQsUIo93ekJJhJmCDxoCekA-jEDB4fJDbUQkWAhgAjqIiEIA5PFRjtsuIasqaER1abYGcCy2cKrSBAxaA-w
The suggestion to use Mad King Runes is not a bad idea either with this build. I’m hoping with the upcoming leaked information regarding the Sigil and Rune Separator that it will be permanent rather than a 1 time use. Kind of like the Salvage-O-matic thing on the TP. That way I can try different runes without burning gold.
I really like your build . I have a suggestion of sorts though . If you would swap out perplexity runes, what would you think about mad king runes . They add power, most of your attacks are in fact power based , bleed and condition duration .
I think Mad King Runes would be great to use. If the Perplexity hit is too much, and the CD is too high to use the Runes, I will probably switch to Earth or Mad King Runes.
Great video’s Sol. I always enjoy watching your skirmishes.
I enjoy making Ranger videos so I thought I would make another one of my Bleeding hearts Build the night before the patch. We are up against Maguuma and FA. I caught a lot of these people off guard….lol and one thief gets kittened about it, which is hypocritical because thieves catch people off guard all day…..gave him a taste of his own medicine.

So I started thinking about the new ‘reveal’ debuff and Sic’ Em and how I might incorporate it into a build. Then I remembered how Hunters Shot will make the enemy Stealth if they have Reflect up. Will the new Sic’ Em skill give the Ranger the Reveal debuff if Sic’ Em is used on an enemy using Reflect? I certainly hope not, but I have a feeling it will.
Awesome build and very well played, man!
Also just noticed, If I swap my traits to ones like yours then the build I’m running has the same stats with 3 less ascended pieces and no signet of stone
Min/max ftw! Enjoy, guys. http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/ranger/?6.0|7.1j.h16.g.1j.h1.0.0.0|3.1j.h16.0.0.0|1n.71p.1n.71p.1j.71p.1n.71p.1j.71p.1n.71p|211.0.2s.0.21n.0.211.0.311.0.1b.66|k37.k2a.u1ab.0.0|30.d|0.4n.4o.4r.0|e
Thanks for that min/max alternative. I know a lot of people don’t have the time to get those charged crystals. Hopefully this alternative build can help a few people out.
Really interesting build, do you think there is a version without celestial that would work?
Reason I’m asking is because I want to try out a build that utilizes both power and bleed damage for roaming and only have enough charged crystals for a few celestial pieces (Laurels aren’t really an option either as I’ve spent most of those as well).
Speaking of which, I really wish they removed the charged crystal requirement for celestial and just made it some other thing I could buy/farm.
See the post right below yours. Poliswag was able to come up with the same build, but using less Celestial items.
I knew when I posted this build that a lot of people would’nt be able to test it because of the time gated Celestial items. I was hoping that there would be a few people who already had the charged crystals/gear made. And it looks like there have been a few people able to test it out with success.
What is the traits build you use for this?
Edit: nvm silly me, just looked at your sig.
Yeah, my signature has an alt build I run every once in a while.
I updated the original post with the build link.

I’m glad you guys liked the video and thanks for all the replies.
really nice video, i wonder if this build can work in sPvP too..
You know, I haven’t done any dedicated sPvP in a while, but I am curious as well. I’ll see if I can get a setup that is close to the PvE/WvW version. The only problem might be the foods. Having an extra 40% Condition duration is huge.
I was trying to figure out the reason behind your choice to use perplexity runes… can you explain that please?
There are a number of other Condition based runes out there, but I like the Perplexity runes because of LB #4. And being able to proc another condition that isn’t common from Rangers, throws people off guard.
