Just because we’re stuck with Scarlet, doesn’t mean they can’t interpret her better. This is a script problem, not story problem. Angel McCoy cold write Shakespeare, and still read horribly if scripted badly ingame.
For example, too much emphasis is placed on how Scarlet orchestrated the alliances, rather than helping overcome their issues.
Scarlet never talks about Baelfire, or the Moletariat, or anything! A character like her should give us more exposition into the alliances. Instead we get only brief mentions how she gave the Krait an obelisk… She never tries to make us think about their situation, or show the slightest amount of concern for the Dredge.
Scarlet isn’t inheritely flawed, but the script really could be better.
Trying to comment on a paticular problem of the Living Story, rather than Scarlet herself…
The problem with the 3 alliances ANET established, and why they are so lore-breaking, is because they cannot act as an independant force. All 3 alliances have Scarlet ontop, which takes away interest from the individual alliances themselves.
The story should have focused on the issues of the alliance, rather than Scarlet orchestrating them.
For example, we had the opportunity to expand on Krait culture and obelisks, and how the promise of their messiah from the Nightmare Court could’ve manipulated the Krait perfectly without help from Scarlet. This would’ve expanded lore on the Nightmare Court to show just how manipulative and sadistic they truly are.
Instead we had someone else above orchestrating the events from top, which takes away credit and story emphasis on the the issues Nightmare Court and Krait face together.
Then there are the Dredge and Flame Legion… WHY were they working together? No, seriously… WHY!? Whatever happened to the Moletariat? What about Baelfire!? Seriously, what the heck are their problems!?
The worst of them all, are the Aetherblades… We have an ENTIRE dungeon and fractal dedicated to them, and their CAPTAIN as prisoner…. Yet we still don’t know their motives? …What? Scarlet says: “They serve me because they don’t want to die”, but what the heck does that even mean? PLEASE, tell us, what is the lore behind Aetherblades? How did they form? Are they really the Southsun Refugees? PLEASE, just give us simple exposition for once, and tell us who the heck they are!?
Seriously, the most we know about the Aetherblades, is they hate festivals.
In short, the alliances explore very little lore behind the races involved themselves. Too much emphasis is placed on how Scarlet manipulated them, rather than how the alliances are working together to overcome their issues.
Hatred for Scarlet has gone global.
I feel bad this will haunt Angel McCoy wherever she goes.
Calling it; Scarlet is gathering Dragon Magic from the earth to one place to make the dragons go for it because they want to eat magic. The dragons will slowly begin to move to said locations, and more of their minions will appear around the maps, most likely fighting against each other.
No, because that would make too much sense.
EVERY time there’s a logical plot twist that could be really cool (like Kiel being Scarlet, Steam Creatures invading Divinity’s Reach, etc…), ANET has to screw it up by doing something totally disappointing and unexpected.
Notice a pattern in Scarlet’s allinces? They’re all elements.
Molten uses the two fiery races, Atherblades are air/electric, and Toxic are nature.
The only thing questionable in this pattern is WHY Krait are affiliated with Earth, rather than Water? Perhap their heavy use of Poison makes them nature?
This begs the question, who will be the water-based alliance? Or is it possibly ice?
One other thing we’ve noticed is each alliance is they involve themselves with the racial antagonists. Molten with Flame Legion, Aetherblades with Inquest, and Toxic with Nightmare Court.
Logically, the next two alliances will involve the Sons of Svanir, or Bandits. But who would they ally with for the Water/Ice elements?
We do know from the Krait being Nature-affiliated, that ANET really thinks outside the box regarding elements.
I want to say Sons of Svanir + Grawl, yet that wouldn’t be possible because Grawl are a racial sympathy in the Personal Story.
So… Sons of Svanir + X? LARGOS!?!?
As for the “Earth” element (separate from Nature), I am betting on the Centaurs with Bandits.

Where’s my ticket!? I opened 50 dang chests, I want my tiket right now!
I think ANET knows the rewards are unbalanced, and that a “fix” woud take only 5 minutes. However, they seem to believe it will have an impact on the economy. (Because buy more gems!!!)
Where’s my free gems!?!? Goddang Santa Fraud!
PLOT TWIST,
SCARLET is really MASTER TOGO!
Riding the world of scumbags who called him weak!
You kidding me? Fractals were the best addition to GW2, to this day. They added a challenging endgame dungeon besides Arah, which this game desperately needed.
Heck, I’m not even bothered by Ascended Rings either. A minimal stat boost which costs ZERO gold, and is easy to get? YES PLEASE!
It’s when they started adding other Ascended trinkets, and weapons, that I got annoyed.
Hey, remember that time when we thought Thaumanova Reactor fractal actually had something to do with Dragons? ;D
Dragons? What’s dragons?
I like dredge. I find them funny and cute, in a goofy kinda way. Great for comic relief.
Too bad their fractal is so kitten annoying…
Shiro was a pretty good villain though, even if written with a horribly cheesy script.
Suggestion: What if they introduced unique “cultural” flame armor for each race? It seems like a waste to make Flamekissed unavailable permanently.
I do get the feeling a lot of things inside the gemstore should’ve been rewards ingame.
For example, sometimes like Tower of Nightmares could’ve been a permanent dungeon, and we should’ve been able to get tokens from the Tri-Key Chest. We could’ve exchanged those tokens for the new armor pieces and Dreamthistle weapons, and just like that we have a great addition to the other 8 dungeons in the game, with tons of reason to go back, and a unique twist of being open-world.
They think staff damage is sufficient to clear content, and don’t want to accomodate their playstyle because they think they know more than you. (A “support” guardian…)
Anyone who says Staff is more Might, I point them to Greatsword, which stacks Might just as good.
Now, this isn’t to say Staff isn’t a great weapon, but it’s more utility than damage.
Please do not change the #4 on torch. We could argue how #5 sucks (it does fulfill its role though…), but PLEASE, do not change #4!
Keep race armor to their respective races, and use it as an excuse to actually fix clipping issues.
Why do Charr clip with their own armor? Why do Sylvari stretch with their own armor? Bullkitten…
Just heard they changed switches. I retract my statement from before. This fractal is now AWFUL!
Seriously, why did they change pressure plates!? Now when we die, they become unpressed. Seriously, WHY did they do that!?
This is why Fractals are great. It leaves things up to speculation, and gives us a sense of wonder.
Minus Scarlet, this would’ve been cool.
I don’t understand why it’s so hard to scale the rewards possibly.
Use Berserker in PvE. Ignore any recommendations telling you to go PVT, because Guardian NEEDS Precision to activate traits like Vigorous Precision, which give you more dodges.
Torch simply serves its purpose as an offhand for those who don’t need the Shield’s projectile blocking, or the Focus’ personal defense.
There’s no other way to “play it properly”, when it simply serves its role to cleanse conditions and apply burn, as oppsoed to defensive skills.
Wintersday related?
Full PVT, even with traits, still does too little damage. Save it for WvW, and run something with Power and Precision. (Third stat doesn’t matter as much.)
If you’re running PVT in Dredge Fractal, that’s a player issue, NOT a design issue!
“Learn to play”.
You don’t need insanely high DPS, but a least run something with an ounce of damage, like Knight’s.
So to all the Kiel voters who thought there was some compelling Atherblade Steam Creatures plot twist involving the Thaumanova Reactor: Are you happy?
Well Scarlet is taunting us the whole time, whispering in our ears things like “breath deeply”, and “don’t look behind you”.
I’m assuming we kill a bunch of members of the Vigil.
We need a Collaborative Development Initiative to discuss Scarlet.
ANET wanted us to vote Kiel because this sorry excuse for a Fractal was easier for them to make.
Underflow servers.
It’s not that the world isn’t populated, it’s that 50 people are segregated amongst 10 or so servers. So instead of 50 people in one zone, you have only 5…
I’m just surprised this is a modern day cash shop skin, when the artists should already have a grasp about their game.
If Scarlet needs a bunch of theory-crafting and untold backstory to be interesting, then the designers failed their job to make her a good antagonist.
Charr wearing Grenth hood. snickers
Was Scarlet retconned, or actually planned at the release of the game? (Considering Thaumanova Reactor was present during the betas..)
Try Arah Medium. You’ll thank me!
PvE. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Radiant_Power
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Scepter_Power
Both those traits combined make you do some really mean DPS with Smite.
I use Torch. The #4 is a wonderful means of both damage and mantaining burn (for the 10% dmg trait.) #5 serves its purpose to cleane conditions.
No complaints. GREAT offhand!
Does this remind anyone else of the Steam Creatures?
I agree. Why not Kudu? He’s legitimately a cool character as well! (ALthough I’m assuming VA wasn’t available..)
Aetherblades were actually pretty cool until Scarlol showed up.
Steampunk Pirates in Airships, with biggass cannons. Why couldn’t the villain be more like Horrik?
Come on, you gotta admit, Horrik was pretty cool. Why couldnt he be the nemesis instead of Scarlet?
What’s up with all the hipsters who say “I like Scarlet Briar”, but never give us any reaons why she is a compelling character?
Maybe they like her, but some people also like Twilight. It doesn’t mean it’s a good story. (Though I would rate Twilight’s cast way better than Scarlet…)
I still wear my Gnashblade badge with pride!
Anyways, I hope they don’t scrap Abaddon entirely. At least remake the final mission of Nightfall into a Boss Fractal…
This thread got mentioned by the official ANET Twitter. Woah! :O

Please do not change virtues. They work fine as they are, especially when traited.
The Guardian’s true power doesn’t come from virtues anyways, but rather his amazing utility skills and weapons.
Just form a party with 4 other people, and treat it like you would a dungeon. Keep an eye out for anyone tailing you, set up an ambush. For anyone ahead of you, make sure you have a mesmer to yank them with Focus #4.
