though going by my contact with a certain RPer yesterday, they dismiss stuff such as “lore” and “logic” in order to fit their weird story. i pointed out to them that sylvaris don’t have surnames,
…sure.

Sylvari can give themselves surnames. It’s not common, but I don’t see why it’s viewed as not possible. “Laranthir of the wild” is like that.

Of course, I think it’s very, very foolish to instantly label everybody like that, or assume the majority will belike that.

I RP in GW2 sometimes, I make my characters stories and backstories, though often I don’t randomly RP with people as I’m not on a server with a lot of RPers, and sometimes it feels awkward.

Logan is plenty cool. This weird ‘’He ran away’’ comments confuses me since he ran away from one battle to another to save the Queen. He didn’t run away because he was scared.

Logan is pretty much the more interesting character of Destiny’s Edge, him and Rytlock, the rest are meh.

Logan pretty much didn’t run away. He was faced with two choices, BOTH having very bad results linked to them for sure.

He simply picked one.

Sigh, people the whole concept is of getting a meeting.

Guess what, you walking into the pale tree chamber and talking to her, or walking into the throne room of DR, or the arcane council, wouldn’t happen much.

Or sure, you could enter the room, but it’s doubtful you could actually talk to them for more then a second. THEY ARE LEADERS OF THEIR NATIONS. You randomly walking in is much less important then say, the news about how well the new trade laws are affecting things. Or things about how the Asura diplomat has listed these issues at the moment concerning the asura gate payments.

that’s a couple thousand miles mind you if we’re to think on real scale

I’m not criticizing you, but this comment made me stop and think. The distance is actually much, much shorter than that. I don’t know if it’s been done, but it would be fairly easy to create a scale bar on the map of Tyria based on how far a toon can run in a set amount of time, assuming toons run at a reasonably realistic speed. I’d bet if we do this, we’ll find the the entire explorable world map is less than 10 miles across.

IIRC, ghosts of Ascalon established that Ebonhawke to AC, in a direct line travel(Not the path we must take ingame) of good pace with little breaks (for a small group of adventurers not weighed down by pack animals, or caravans), was 3 days.

While I honestly don’t think the ingame scale isn’t THAT far from lore, one could take the world make, make a line from Ebonhawke north gate to AC, and then use that to figure out travel times based off that.

Though in terms of NPC mentions, there is a Norn in Gendarren fields who sometimes approaches the Haven south of the Dredge caves, and if you talk to him he ends up saying that at his current pace of travel, he’ll end up at Vigil Keep a WEEK early, because he tried getting the most travel into each day. He doesn’t mention a starting point or how long his trip was supposed to take though. (or how long he’s been walking already >_>)

I DID want to make such a scale/line thing and figure stuff out, but RL happen. Like figuring out how long it’d take a character to travel from DR to say, LA or the edge of the shiverpeaks. as part of a group or caravan, or on horseback.

As an experiment, a while back I did toggle walk and went from the eastern edge of Blazeridge to the western edge of Brisban in a little over 2 hours. There are a few ways that you can interpret that, but by the direct way that you suggested, and setting the walk speed at approximately 3 miles per hour, you come up with a map less than 7 miles wide. Of course, that’s a product of gameplay scale, not lore. GoA is probably your best source for trying to figure out the lore dimensions.

Erm, is that RL time for ingame time? I wonder what that scale comes out to if taking ingame time into account. Of course, that’s a harder thing to figure out…

Kiel is probably still in LA. She isn’t one of the biconics (and as such isn’t the roaming around sort) so her involvement in S1 was mostly as a result of so much of S1 involving LA. Dry Top has little connection to LA (although you’d expect the lionguard to atleast show up and give a helping hand to the survivors).

Kiel is IN LA. She’s kinda part of the ruling council of the city, she has a job there. She can’t run off into the counrtyside.

As for them showing up, sure after they LEARN about the crash. Though there is the fact it’s pretty far out of the way from any of their actual holdings/patrol paths. Seraph is already on the scene, most they could do is send a caravan over to help out.

How did the Pact reach Orr?

Kalavier.1097

Frankly, Orr lasts a while in the actual timeline(Or is heavily implied to be), but we don’t actually do 100% of it in personal story. We do more of the super important missions vital to the campaign, instead of every piece. Much of the pushes and camp takings are in events in the open world.

Why isn't everything on fire?

in Lore

Posted by: Kalavier.1097

Kalavier.1097

It’s magic, simply put as that.

Also the fact some things burn easier then others. For example, I remember a historical site/town who at one point, actually launched FLAMING arrows at the rebuilt (period accurate) houses. Couldn’t set the building on fire from that.

Simply put from a lore perspective, it’s likely the flames are part of the magic. It’s not a normal flame burning, it’s a magical one. Once the magic runs out/expires, the flames stop. Hence why most of the time we see events or such dealing with fire, it’s from manual, “I threw a torch at the house” thing, not a fireball.

But onto factual stuff, and then pure speculation.

Zhaitan may have corrupted spirits. He claimed one of Grenth’s Reapers and the dead royal family he twisted into his “Eyes of Zhaitan” may also have been spirits. Another thing to note is the asuran take on magic. By their eternal alchemy, everything is magic. Magic just has a tendacy to change shape. If ghosts are magical constructs, so is everyhting else – ghosts may just be closer to being a purer source of magic and thus more easily absorbed.

FALSE. Zhaitan never had grenth’s reapers. He had the high priest of the temple, who Grenth sent a Reaper to RECLAIM. Though the Reaper was weakened and unable to do it personally, we step in for him. (Personal story).

PS. While I haven’t checked this personally, lots of people are saying that the prophesy about freeing the Ascalonian ghosts is different from the prophesy people keep quoting involving royal Ascalonian blood. Royal Ascalonian blood seems connected to releasing the blood shards, a seperate prophecy says that the ghosts can only be freed by a true ruler of Ascalon – which could be any ruler of Ascalon, even a ruler of the Char?

That legend is that a true heir of DORIC’s bloodline would be able to release the foefire by taking the other blade (Rurik’s), to the heart of the foefire and doing a ritual.

My take? Rytlock may be doing something to actually kitten off the foefire ghosts, and direct them AGAINST the vines. Because note he’s at Barridan’s tomb, NOT Ascalon City. Also the fact he isn’t of Doric’s line at all :P.

Um, they explicitly say as of the end of PS (Trahearne’s words) that the Risen threat is STILL THERE. However, now the risen numbers will start to slowly but steadily go DOWN as the main ways for them to regain numbers is gone (Zhaitan).

Zhaitan could easily be dead forever, and the Risen still be a major threat. Remember, you are talking about a force which at a DEFAULT, is a nation worth of people and ANIMALS undead, + a lot more corpses….

Well, it makes sense vigil medium (and maybe even light) would be (visually at least) ‘heavy’ then others, as they expect the most combat. I wouldn’t honestly be surprised if a Norn elementalist was wearing robes which were basically on par with human heavy armor or high end medium, simply from strength difference and all.

Trahearne doesn’t deserve the hate he gets. I played the personal story again recently, and he seemed like an okay guy, who had an understandable development of starting off an unsure scholar, and becoming a full fledged commander by the end. Even as a commander, he still had to face his confidence.

Just needs his voice actor to show a bit more emotion, that’s all. But he’s not really that bad of a character.

The main issue is a lot of the haters never paid attention to the story, and thus think he ‘stole credit’ from the player at EVERY chance, when he didn’t at all.

In the Crucible of Eternity, you have a chance to save the Inquest (rather than let them be gobbled up by their escaped experiment).

Thus, it might be interesting to add that sort of choice to the LS, e.g. what if you could increase favor of the Zephyrites for either shutting down the Light Bridge or rescuing some inquest from quicksand (but not both).

Of course, NOBODY does the “rescue the inquest” because it causes more elites to fight where dooming him kills them all. :/

Kalavier.1097

It’s left to the player to make up an explanation for why it doesn’t match their experience in Nightfall.

There’s no need to make up an explanation.

Just take both what you know from GW1 and what you read in Scarlet’s house at face value, and the answer presents itself. Unless you’re unaware of the concept of ‘propaganda’, in which case you should worry more about your general knowledge than the quality of a video game’s writing.

^ this.

And likely it’s talking about a period slightly before the events of Nightfall, aka at first the Centaurs and Kournans worked together in a trade alliance, then the Kournans decided to stop paying and started enslaving the Centaurs.

But what leader, military dictator or just evil, hasn’t made things look better in their public announcements?

The Flame Legion follows the destroyers, which are in turn the minions of Primordus. The Searing was brought upon Ascalon with destroyer magic. In Guild Wars Eye of the North you see a lot of it.

I don’t see why a Dredge outpost can’t get the same treatment as Concordia or Fort Salma. Just replace the krytan trinket/krait obelisk shards with a mighty dwarven artefact and the dredge become a target for the dragon.

Nope. The Searing was TITAN magic.

They tried worshipping destroyers in EOTN as a means of securing shaman control over everybody again as the lack of ‘gods’ was weakening their throne.

Well, you see, how many dredge outposts have waypoints directly inside of them? I think the artifacts helped the decision, but note he ONLY attacked the forts (and propersity which is right next to his original vine area :P)

Nah. Resurrection skills stopped working. Baelfire had to perform a really long and complicated resurrection ritual to resurrect himself.

But those no longer work.

And what says his long and complicated ritual wasn’t the modern flame legion form of res chant from gw1?

Besides, I doubt it was as easy as “Popping a res signet”, though we know it was something almost all monks could cast. It’s just in GW2 that magic is harder to pull off or forgotton, I’ve not once seen anything that says “Those spells don’t work period”.

M*A*S*H was a great show, a comedy set in a war. Sometimes one has to hold onto a sense of humor to keep going and remain sane in the face of huge adversity.

I just began typing a reply about M*A*S*H but I see you’ve already mentioned it. Thanks. That’s a great example.

Always love whenever people complain about jokes in a serious area, and it’s almost always “It’s so they don’t think about how truly and utterly terrifying things are…”

Taimi probably doesn’t really understand what’s going on despite her intelligence. It’s like how human children are incapable of thinking in abstract concepts until about age 11. I wouldn’t mind seeing something horrible happen to Taimi that sort of snaps her into reality. Like Braham loses an arm or something trying to keep her out of trouble she dived in to head first.

I like how Taimi is, probably my favorite, she is really smart but at the same time is just a kid, an orphan kid, and orphan sick kid. It’s like her moral code were incomplete/broken, because she knows what is right or wrong but still feels excited about wrong doing and she doesnt hide it.

TL; Taimi is an overcondifent genius sick orphan KID asuran with a broken/incomplete moral code. I think her personality/dialogs are the best developed and fits almost perfectly in conjuction with Brham.

Taimi did change during the battle of LA. After talking to and interviewing the refugees, she did go “Is it true, Scarlet did all of this?”
“yes”
“Then tell Scarlet that I WILL become better then her, and I’ll make her pay.”

Something akin to that. She FULLY understands what Scarlet ended up doing is horrible and wrong, BUT, she at the same time looks at Scarlet’s earlier years, development and research and notes how it can be used for GOOD. Aka “Hey, this guy ended up using robots to destroy a town… but these earlier models could REALLY help out in construction zones!”

“Hey, her research into ley-line hubs can seriously help us out, especially in future developments and with the waypoints!”

A: The centaurs and the camp (and everywhere we see them in really) are ALL accessible by ramps and walking. The one place that isn’t just needs a vine bridge.
B: They’ve been there a good while. They likely just lived up there the entire time in the first place.

You’re telling me the centaurs on the high ledges around the raptor area, with no caves or natural steps, that can only be reached by a series of crystal jumps lived up there alone their whole lives?

Also, I’ll remind you again of the fact that tyrian centaurs can’t cross a shallow creek without a bridge. in fact, blowing up a single bridge is the only thing that has stopped them from completely overrunning fort salma in the first place.

The magumma centaurs don’t look particularly differently adapted.

There’s no good explanation for it, it’s simply video game logic which can’t be rationally explained.

The Maguuma Centaurs have been living in the region for 250+ years at the least, likely longer.

Gameplay. As you said, video game logic. So why are you trying to force it in?

ALSO, talking to a Seraph near the bridge, her comment was “To win this, we have to control how the Centaurs move supplies” (Also the fact Salma has two fronts, the bridge merely is one…)

Ever thing the reason the bridge is so important is because it’d let the centaurs move supplies to set up siege weapons across the river easier? Because that stream does move along and the only true ‘ramp’ of good size up from it is on the Salma side, not the Centaur side.

True enough, although the devs did point out in the forums last week, anything said in interviews that isn’t specifically written into the game isn’t necs canon. I believe the word they used was “malleable”. A Zhaitan resurrection is admittedly unlikely, but not out of the question based on that.

SIGH.

The actual wording was more like “Take game as top tier canon, things below it (MAINLY interviews!) can POSSIBLY change.”

I really, really am getting tired of everybody seeming to parrot the line as going about EVERY SINGLE THING as a “Oh it’ll likely change.” or “It might change because it’s not stated ingame so we can’t say it factually!”

Zhaitan BETTER be alive, at least, some form of him.

ANET owes us a real final battle. And I want it to be a solo instance where we get to personally strike him with our sword.

Yes, the 5 or six foot tall human stabbing the 500m+ LONG dragon to death.

I’m sorry, but if that happened I’d be kittened off at the writers. Especially if you killed him and weren’t brutally murdered akin to an ant attacking an armored knight.

I don’t understand how people see Zhaitan and his minions sickly green.

Artistic renditions show gray as prominent color, green just a little here and there.

Because his glow in Arah storymode basically. And how at times his corruption has a green tint (But most of those times it’s also relating to poisoned areas in the land).

While zhaitan has a prominent bright green glow inside him http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/4/49/Zhaitan.jpg. As far as judging this by colors I feel this could go either way.

It would fit better this way in my opinion, because that way the vision reflects both Zhaitan’s defeat and Mordremoth’s awakening last.

Unless the vision doesn’t mean what we think at all in which case all of this is moot.

Yeah, EVERYBODY knows you are the commander of the Pact, or were.

We haven’t been forgotten. and “You’re you.” You are command of the Pact, so that’s what I take that as.

Belinda outright talks to you formally, and your character tells her “No need to be so formal, I haven’t commanded the Pact in a while.”

Belinda also mentions how Marjory had told her stories about your actions in the Pact and killing Zhaitan.

Everytime I talk to the trio of priory guys in Dry-top, they open with “Commander!”

Oh god no...

Also, given how Sylvari wake up fully grown and WITH the knowledge of their class for the most part (basics at least)… It fits. Besides, those that only glanced at her backstory thought she learned everything. The officially backstory explicitly said she didn’t learn all that she could have with each race.

Like you say, the basics. The first official backstory was that she graduated from all 3 colleges. Only later was it fixed. And that still doesn’t explain the dozens of other, unrealistic things she pulled (wherever she got all the metal for the marionette or her armies is still vague).

After eight years of voracious study in the Grove, Ceara had learned all she cared to from her extended family. Her people were accomplished hands at many key disciplines, but they couldn’t provide the depth of knowledge she craved. She wanted to construct systems as complex as the ones she saw in nature, to build machines as sublime as the living things she saw each and every day.

She impressed a grizzled old bear of a norn named Beigarth with her interest and energy, and on his invitation spent a long winter as his pupil, apprentice, and forge-tender. When spring came, she announced her intentions to move on, having learned all she needed to know. Beigarth tried to dissuade her, eager to pass along the full slate of his smithing knowledge to such a unique and promising student, but she left him with a wave and a breezy smile.

Next she spent two years with a gladium named Asagai, late of the Iron Legion. An expert sniper and demolitionist, Asagai could tell by feel if a firearm was not assembled properly, and correct a misaligned site on a field gun just by listening to the sound of its thunder.

She completed the Dynamics coursework in under a year as the highest-ranked student in her class. Chagrined, the councilors give her the same opportunity in Statics. When she achieved similar results in a similar time frame, they were intrigued enough to see if she could do the same with Synergetics.

So, why would she be able to ‘graduate’ a college, in a year, that Asura spend basically teenager to adulthood learning in? Infact, it never says she graduated at all. It simply said she completed the coursework. I complete the algebra coursework as highest ranked in my class, does that mean I graduated math?

Why are you people still here?!
