Make them all painterly?

Isn’t that why the personal story has the stylised conversations?

That was the original plan, but a variety of factors led to the decision of shortening the painterly cinematic and doing the rest via the in-game systems.

That’s unfortunate, because I LOVE the painterly cuts.

I don’t hate the engine-drawn parts; but if y’all are gonna do those, at least make sure mouths move :P

Let's unite for a Mac OS X native client

Saying they’ve already done it in whichever format and that it’ll be a pain and a cost of resources to give us a dedicated Mac port might be true, but it makes it no less necessary! I love Guild Wars – I see the game going for a great many more years, what with all their amazing updates and all – but if it intends to be taken seriously by its fans (like me!) for much longer I’m strongly behind a dedicated Mac client.

Sure, Mac gamers might not be their main audience, but I’m sure we’re a significant number. If even small Indie game studios cater for us, I don’t see myself gritting my teeth and trying so hard to enjoy a useable but ultimately unenjoyable wrapper client that’s in permanent BETA (I’m not even sure if it’s being worked on) from a large studio like ArenaNet for that much longer!

I absolutely love the game. I think it’s tragic that I have to be playing on 2001 Runescape-esque graphics when I’ve got a top-of-the-line OSX machine — and perhaps even more tragic that ArenaNet is happy allowing our (perhaps smaller) Mac population to experience all the wonderful work they put into the game on the Lowest graphics settings forever just because we’re not as many as their Windows userbase.

I would gladly pay a top-up fee or even a small subscription (though that’d be somewhat against my morals) to see them give some consideration to a properly supported Mac client. To give us a mediocre appeasement BETA toy and then kicking us out into the streets indefinitely with no further word like that is frankly rather unprofessional, and it makes me sad.

I find it kind of puzzling, actually. Mac users typically pay a premium for products, meaning they’re generally willing to pay more for what they like. What’s puzzling is that that implies (though I don’t have metrics) they would therefore be gem customers. Even though it’s a smaller population (and is that correlative to the fact there’s no client or is the lack of a client causative?), wouldn’t a higher-per capita number of Mac users buy gems? I assume so, but dunno… maybe data mining some client:gem purchase data would bear that out.

I am satisfied (and only satisfied – not ecstatic) with the performance under Cider/Wine, and would in fact like a native client.

I do, though, have another self interest in continued work on the Cider version – I play on Linux (desktop) and Mac (laptop) – any development on the Cider wrapper will likely result in simultaneous performance increases under Wine.

TLDR; as long as ANet keeps working on supporting the Mac (via either means of compatibility), I’ll be happy.

Call me a noob, but, is this diminishing returns things legit? Only time I’ve ever heard that used is something to do with damage in combat. Is this diminishing returns on loot or something? If so, why would you punish players for wanting to play more than an hour? Seriously? Maybe I’m seeing trolling here, idk. But if I paid for the game, I surely will play it as long as I want to and shouldn’t receive any kind of ‘punishment’ for doing so.

ok, will look into elementalist and engineer – neither has negatives I inherently can’t ignore (i.e. I can be patient for 20 levels pretty easily).

To answer some snark above:

I used S/D and S/W on ranger – that experience was not spelled out.

I did/do follow up on the skill – it still feels “backwards” to me.

Evade is indeed cool, but that’s why I have dodge roll, I assumed… thus not of as much value to me.

My Thief was primarily d/d.

“Required” for PvE or not, it’s what I like… hence I asked for advice on a profession that would provide it. Plodding forward in a straight line swinging a Greatsword or two axes just looks boring to me as I watch others do it.

ANet is feeling their way into an update process that afaik is unprecedented for an MMO. I thought Flame and Frost was a decent start. Since then, though?

What would I have done differently?

Flame & Frost: The premise was interesting. It made use of existing content — both in terms of existing zones and existing enemy factions. It culminated in a dungeon that was imo more fun than any other dungeon I’ve been in. However, the Molten Alliance fell apart. Why? Because the brain behind it was done with them? The weapon master could have easily gotten away while we were fighting the dual final boss. The Alliance could be licking its wounds from the destruction of weapon facilities. There could have been lingering effects in the persistent world, like Dynamic Events added to the zones where the Flame Legion and Dredge appear. Then, in another update cycle somewhere down the road, the Alliance could return to plague Tyria once again. Maybe they’ve broken away from the devious hinted-at mastermind who manipulated them. Maybe they blame their setback on the manipulator or her race, adding that race to their hated list.

Labyrinthine Cliffs: I would have kept the map open, even though the Sanctum has air-sailed away. An enemy group could move in. Seems to me the Aetherblades are short a base of operations. The Lionguard could build a fort there and encourage adventurers to harry the blackguards. Over time, the DE’s there could change, and the next time the Sanctum planned to return, there could be a LS update about the big push to take back the Cliffs, a big push that the intervening events in the zone had led up to.

What would you do?

Something similar to what you posted above – that is to say, CHANGE the world permanently. That was such an exciting concept for me when I read it, but it’s not happened yet.

I’m not bashing ANet at all, but that has been the most disappointing part for me with Living World (maybe this comment shoulda gone over in that section). First I didn’t like the fact the content went away (wait – it’s fun and interesting, but it’s gonna go away?); but had it actually changed Tyria permanently, I woulda felt better about it because it would have made sense

I get what they’re doing – they’re taking the game platform and putting TV-series-like content in it (like tuning into a new episode of Fringe every week) – I just think it’s turning out so far to be more like watch Fringe this week, next week it’s preempted by Swamp People, and the next week it changes again… occasionally we get something with mass suck factor like Big Brother (Dragon Bash).

I’m not going to say that this game has it’s problems, because it does. However I can only imagine how massive of an undertaking this game still is considering the size of the world, hundreds events at any one time, and so much content intermingled and flexible to different variables. I certainly feel there is more balance that needs to be accomplished between professions, but even that is better than it was. I’ve heart 99% praise for this update and 1% whiners. I’m sorry, but this post seems like someone who just threw their proverbial Nintendo controller and yelled “The game cheats!!!”.

No it shows the frustrations of the thousands who will up thumb this comment.

You have no idea how much stress this game can cause because it is more confusing than fun at times.

I dig what you’re saying; but on day two of having the game, I read what was necessary to make a legendary and decided it wasn’t worth it. That’s a goal you set for yourself, so you can’t blame the developers on that one.

I think his point his that almost every living story feels like a holiday event rather then an actual event. The Molten Alliance for example felt like an actual battle though I still think it could of been done better with some of the world stuff going on. Everything else feels like a holiday with some bad guys. The Aetherblade Pirates just feel like party crashers and not a real threat. They are like clowns gone wrong.

I agree… if every event is like a holiday event, then the actual holiday events become nothing special.

So we’re going with “Every day is Halloween”? (That was for the old people on the forum).

This one concerned me when I read this thread yesterday, but now I have a different concern. Farming vets in a group and sneaking up on the various chests, I see gold will be no problem for those interested in the vendor loot, skins, etc. I’m not concerned about that anymore.

Where I am concerned is if few people spend all that gold… inflation is now definitely a potential from this event.

All that negative said – I find the vet farming a ton of fun. I’m sure if you check back in a few days, I will have grown bored of it, but the legendary fights aren’t nearly as fun to me as the massive number of respawning vets.

This aint gonna happen because gw2 caters to casuals. And 90% of them can’t dodge at the right time nor run away from damage, sadly.

I do with they made the whole game harder and more rewarding. Ah well. Will have to wait for some other game.

I argue the opposite, people don´t learn or care about dodging etc. because they have no need for it.

That was MY first thought, as well. There are CHAMPIONS that are very nicely done (the Risen Priesti (Priestesses?) and Baron in Orr, for example) whose AI use their territories very well (albeit, still not the entire region).

One of the things I hated about the only other MMO I ever played (DDO) was beating on a bag of hitpoints because that’s the only way they knew to make them difficult… ditto GW2 with open world PVE bosses.

When you have money to work with you want volume when making this sort of transaction. When I go and buy 10k bags I want them to clear fast, and I’d rather get them inside of two hours at a 15% margin than waiting two days for half of them to clear, having to pull the rest, to get a 20% margin. What you’re doing slowly working the margins down is exactly what you should be doing when you’re trying to safely squeeze some money out, but there’s no reason to expect someone operating on a much larger scale to try and do the same thing.

Yup, like I said, I hadda blow off steam – we’d been there about 1-2 hours I guess and had dropped the price down from i dunno 1.08 to ALMOST .99, after which there were several additional increments that woulda naturally brought it down into maybe the 80’s (because there were so few bids in each) within maybe a half hour. Then the large order came in and poof! trading stopped (including his hugenormous bid for probably the following hour – he hardly had a nibble).

There I was: trading sacks on the TP.

Lowest Sell Price was 1.6 silver, the highest bid price was 1.4 silver, and 1.3, 1.2, 1.1, and 1.0 each had about 250 in each slot.

Obviously, there were about three or four of us during that timeframe, judging by the activity.

The bids were diminishing, and I could tell the buyers were right along with me – making SMALL bids on 1.4, and you could see SMALL tranches being placed below it – we were about to drive the price down to 1.3.

Just before we crossed over into 1.3, I saw the others do what I did – drop their bids on 1.3 down, increase their bid stacks on 1.2 and below.

Then came Clevon into the mix – dufus drops a bid order of 1.5 to the tune of 5500 items.

Rather than coming in, placing a grand on 1.3, and 1500 on 1.2 and 1.1 each, he chose to stop the momentum of the bidding for easily an hour while we wait for his tranche to clear. He also paid more for his 5500 items.

Now – free market is the name of the game, but looking at the bids for a minute or two can keep the pressure on the price up and result in a lot of savings over the course of a trading session.

Have you compared the prices of boosters in this game in terms of proxy currency to other games to determine if they are “out of whack”?

Let’s see.

DDO, character slot – 625TP, 50% XP boost for 15 hours – 2395TP, 30 slots shared bank – 2985
GW2, character slot – 800 Gems, 50% XP boost for 15 hours – 1650 Gems, 30 slots bank expansion – 800 Gems

Both games offer 2000 proxy currency for $25. So in this example either our character slot is overpriced or their XP Booster is. Lets not even talk about bank slots.

As others have pointed out a number of times, and which you seem to ignore, that gold to gems is and always been a secondary method to purchase gems and it’s inflation rests solely on players choosing to convert more gold to gems than vice versa. There is no such mechanism in DDO, it’s cash or nothing.

As for the cosmetic items like kites and flutes, well their cost is the price we pay for a game that is cash shop only for continuing income. They do seem popular as the surge in Gold to Gems conversion rate implies when such items first appear, due to the influx of gold to the exchange for gems.

Notwithstanding the fact DDO turned into a flaming pile (multi-year/several hundred dollar-invested customer till their quality/stability fell apart). Not a fair comparison target.

KarateKid.5648

Champions and group events are easy, I dunno what you’re talking about. Longest champion I’ve fought took me about 30 minutes to fight solo.

There are a few, though, that are nigh-unsoloable. I used to shy away from Champions the first few weeks I played the game (I solo mostly); but I found almost all champions between, say, 15 and 65-ish are soloable once you figure out what their “moves” are.

Some are bags of HP, others hit extremely hard, and still others do knockdown, etc (those I hate). Once you figure those out (and stay mobile), they’re not too bad.

At levels lower than that range, your HP suck so badly it’s not worth messing with them at all. At higher levels, their skills, HP, and sheer damage make it equally worthless to deal with them.

What I found interesting was that the higher level ones are quite easy to DUO if random aggro doesn’t get involved.

in Black Lion Trading Co

Also realize that market cornering is not the same as a monopoly. What the OP is doing is market cornering. Monopolies are when a single entity has the sole ability to produce and sell a good. Market cornering is when an entity attempts to gain sufficient supply of a commodity in order to manipulate the price of said commodity.

Since there are no true barriers of entry in the crafting system (either traditional or MF), or to farming, a monopoly cannot exist in this game.

Aye, this. Per investopedia:

GW 2 #1 mmo of 2013

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

KarateKid.5648

I think MMOs in general just suck, at least for me that’s true.

One one hand you have pay to play MMOs who’s sole job is to slow you down and make you come back again. They have a number of different ways to do this, particularly the slowing down part. Grinding for levels, of course, lock outs, slow crafting, flight paths, dailies for rep, and of course grinding dungeons for gear. Sorry not my scene.

Then you have F2P mmos, some of which are grindy and pay to make them playable. Some of which have content locked off and pay to unlock that (or grind till you drop to unlock it) and some of them have pay to win options, the worst of the three.

Then you have games like Guild Wars 2, which I enjoy, but still uses RNG in lock boxes, and arbitrary achievements and temporary content to keep people logging in.

Of them all, Guild Wars 2 is the best solution for me and my style of play…but it’s far from perfect.

So you know, I’ve done WoW, Rift, Lotro, DDO, Perfect World, AoC, Aion, Eve, and tried a few others.

I’m not thinking that future games are necessarily going to be any better either.

Pretty much everything stated above… I typically loathe MMO’s, but GW2 struck such a good balance in design it hooked me. The leet MMO types complain here a lot to make it more like the others – I for one hope it stays the same (minus the recent performance issues, naturally).

You’d think it was for salvaging, but then why would people buy anything other than the cheapest possible whites?

Depends what they’re seeking – level 70 or above for orichalcum. Check the level on the various prices of white items. That might be it.

As a newer player who’s only been playing a couple months, this game is anything BUT P2W.

I can buy almost anything with gold (which is not that hard to get, once you get the hang of it) or by running mists/dungeons.

Consumables like axes and their siblings or salvage kits are manageable once you realize you don’t have to farm or salvage EVERY.SINGLE.THING you come across.

The BLTC keys are lame and obvious in their intent, but in no way are they P2W.

And like the poster above, I have repair canisters I forget in my bank constantly. The fact they’ve not been needed (though woulda been nice) tells me they’re a convenience factor, nothing more.

IMHO, your apparent disdain for people making and spending money in general is coloring your perspective on reality. I bet the auction house makes you cringe as well.

The most kitten up targeting system EVER.

I have to agree – lack of “target next nearest” is frustrating. Target next relies on spawn or draw order… something other than distance and direction facing. Is it the end of the world, no; but it gets frustrating in massive groups of mobs.

The right-click all the time is how I play; but there’s a catch-22: a portion of the player population has right-click glitch out pretty frequently (there are several posts about it in tech support and general). Thus, the workaround adds to the frustration.

Mouse programming no longer works

I have had a similar, but not identical problem twice in about the past week – my mouse bindings just “go away”. By “go away”, I mean the extra keys on my logitech mouse with two extra buttons (mouse 4 and mouse 5) no longer function. In the UI, they appear to be bound (in my case, to jump and dodge); but they do nothing when pressed.

Workaround is to simply rebind them, and they mysteriously work fine. unfortunately, the first time this happened was right as we were running up to a group event, and the second was as I engaged a champion solo. Really bad timing! They’d been working perfectly for an hour or more prior to both events.

NO idea why they just suddenly lose their assignment while running.

I am not a fan of PvP at all (I play FPS’es for that); but I gotta admit, my son and I had an absolute BLAST with this event last night.

I won’t play it a lot, but it is a fantastic distraction… and most importantly – fun!
