They may well be hostile.

On Ascended Gear

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

KarateKid.5648

All content other than high level fractals is available for relatively easy completion without ascended gear, thus ascended gear is optional gear that simply makes things slightly easier.

This is not WoW, where the next tier is effectively mandatory because without it you fail the DPS or AR check.

Armor I won’t argue because surviving one-shots a portion of the time is legit.

DPS, on the other hand: In a typical boss fight, ascended/legendary equate to shortening the fight by so little it makes them not worth the hassle of crafting them.

KarateKid.5648

OK, now THIS is not fair, Anet.

Upgrading blueprints takes (when you boil it down) two types of currency: Gold and Skill Points.

I calculated profit on the 6 types.

I also calculated gold return per skill point.

These yield utterly different results… the highest profit (normal definition) blueprint is the LOWEST on a gold/skill point valuation.

Which is the optimum to calculate? Normally, we’d say profit; but given skill points determine # of times you can build blueprints, wouldn’t it be more profitable in the long run to calculate gold/skill point?

This is now about more than a few silver point difference between one blueprint and another – it just became about OCD.

Gossamer worth less than silk

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: KarateKid.5648

KarateKid.5648

I think Gossamer should not be worth less than silk. I, personally, am fine with the silk price but gossamer should get something to increase its worth.

The reason why gossamer is cheaper than silk is that lots of people promoted silk to gossamer prior to the ascended armorcrafting patch in december because they thought Gossamer would rise higher in price.

the silk/gossamer prices are a dilemma the players brought upon themselves and i dont know why Anet should change anything.

That’s one (odd) way to explain it. A more logical explanation is that the demand for silk is much higher than gossamer because people need waaay more of silk for ascended armor crafting. Here are the numbers for a full set of ascended armor:

- Silk scrap required: 10800 (light), 7500 (heavy), 7200 (medium)
- Gossamer scrap required: 60 (light), 70 (heavy), 60 (medium)

This was my thought, too. It’s like Mithril – it should be MUCH more valuable (lore-wise) than it currently is.

It points towards that the player base is willing to pay 8s per scrap instead of farming it themselves. And the argument that its not reliably farmable is simply untrue.

I am really sick of this argument and so i went out to farm linen today. I got 57 in one hour hitting various mobs that drop salvage mats and loot bags that contain linen. I did this in my pvt wvw build.

I also got 43 scraps of cotton and 74 scraps of silk.

Then please, share your uber grind spot with the rest of us. And you were on a max level character as well I take it?

It wasnt an über grind spot, it was 4 different ones to not get DR. You just have to familiarize yourself with the different mobs that drop containers/salvage items that drop linen. And I dont see a reason to publish it here to make life easier for those, who prefer to come to the forums to complain about the issue instead of actually going out and do some dynamic events. …

1) Torn garments average 2 linen per salvage
2) Medium ritual bags average 0.8 per opening
3)Let us also assume that bags drop every 2 flame legion, and garments every 5.*

1) That’s about right
2) On a per bag basis, I dunno – a stack of 50 all done at once (I hate opening as I go) gets me somewhere between 20-35 scraps, IIRC. When I’ve opened as I go, it seems to drop more of the bones, claws, frakkin’ oranges, etc.
3) My experience has been 1-2 medium ritual bags per 4 flame legion averaged over a run – frayed thingies are VERY low rate – something like 1-3 per 20-30 flame legion? Never tracked it.

Edit: user error on quoting.

Yah, no – there is no ONE spot – there’s a collection of three (four if bored, but the fourth doesn’t yield well at all) level 58-59 spots/events (one of which does take longer than others).

I typically come off of one 30-45 minute run (depending upon blood alcohol level) of all three events (when I can get them to line up and people don’t hose them or de-synch them) This is USUALLY with one other person with me – if more join in, we get more drops.

200-250 scraps per hour/hour-and-a-half is quite doable if you hit the entire chain. Standing still in any one place seems to suck a lot. I have always blamed DR for loot drop quality dropping off (as the guy above said), but got told the other day it doesn’t unless you stand still for numerous hours. Whatever, I am running the chain, because my eyes tell me it yields more.

Really, the trinity didn’t disappear – it was simply replaced. It’s not “stacking” it’s… crowdtanking.

The issue is that so many people were b—hurt by WoW, that they are frantic to bash anything that is even remotely similar. That leaves MMO designers replacing “WoW Mechanics” with anything different even if not better.

…It was intentionally removed in GW2 not because of WoW, but as a consequence of devs aiming for more action-oriented combat and soloability…

If that was the case, it was kinda the wrong prescription. The ONLY thing I think DDO had going for it that was better implemented than GW2 was the active combat. It was MUCH more action-oriented than GW2 and they had the trinity.

Currently linen, a T4 basic material, is well more than any T6 basic material. And since it’s cloth, there’s no way to directly harvest it and any farming of the stuff is unreliable since it’s contingent on both RNG and DR. So is anything going to be done to address this inequity? Or should we all just accept that these inflated prices are here to stay?

“Unreliable” is a bit strong – it is entirely possible to reliably farm these without exploit at a rate of 4+ GP/hr (grated – at current prices) – and can do so in a manner that is fun OR eye-bleedingly boring – player’s choice.

It’s unreliable because your ability to gather the material is beholden to rng. That’s not to say you can’t farm it; with enough time invested killing the right mobs you’ll get a stack eventually. But because it’s tied to loot, rather than gathering, it’s going to take you a hell of a lot longer to get a stack of linen than it is, say, platinum.

I dunno how long it takes to collect up a stack of 250 plat ore. 1-1.5 hrs can get you a stack of Linen (sometimes faster due to RNG, as you mentioned).

KarateKid.5648

Hello Guild Wars 2 Community!

I am very excited to have purchased my deluxe edition of GW2! I have done some modest research, and most information or videos I have seen had made me very excited to try out this game!

Some things that made this decision very easy for me:

1) NO Monthly Subscriptions!!! Thank you

2) Weekly-Monthly updates. Great to see how much content was added for FREE. Again, these two things made the decision just that much more easier for me.

3) The combat. Good paced fighting and plenty of monsters to kill. The skills I’ve seen look very fun to play with

4) Wow, the sheer amount of players in a server looks amazing! And I’m really looking forward to these huge, epic, crazy fights with a ton of people taking down a demon! Wow that looks epic!

I’ve never played a subscription based game, and I don’t ever plan on doing so.

I am the type of gamer, who usually picks one game and goes all in, head first. I guess you can say I take my video games like a relationship, and I’m a one game type of guy

I would list my previous loving game obsession, but I don’t dwell in past relationships and I’m looking forward to this one

Any tips for a first time player of Guild Wars?

Welcome to the party, find a good, active guild that does what you want to do in game, some will literally do all aspects of game play from dungeons to fractals to Spvp to wPVP to event farming, to living story achievements etc. Don’t wait to level cap your first character to start a second, just switching between my main and alts changes the way the game plays and makes it more interesting. Also, Don’t make a mesmer for your first character.

And don’t forget, you can be in MORE THAN ONE guild – if you find one that does one thing you like, but not another – you can join a different guild, and just “represent” that guild via the UI when you’re playing whatever content they do.

Greetings! Just Purchased GW2!

The mass lag out and dc'ing

So I’ve noticed that massive lag for everyone and mass dc’ing has been happening a lot more recently. It may not be a “press this button and plug this back in” to fix it, but please for the love of gaming do something about it. The performance of the game should go above any other aspect of the game.

I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say it’s not very fun to be in the middle of a dungeon or WvW or spvp when suddenly everyone starts to lag and then everyone dc’s. It’s especially not fun when you lose progress in a dungeon/fractal, or you lose golems or siege in WvW, or get booted from an spvp tourney.

If it is a DDoS attack, there’s very little they can do if the attacker really wants to ratchet up. Even DDoS mitigation services won’t solve immediately upon engagement AND still lag for latency-sensitive apps like a game.

If it’s not the rumored DDoS, ignore this post

Why should the take the orders of some stranger who spent 100 gold? You don’t order other players. If you want to explain how something is done, that is one thing, but giving orders is only going to get you blocked.

I gotta go with this – it’s how you instruct the player.

I was corrected by a player during an event the other day in a very instructional manner “don’t kill that one – it will slow down our progress”. I complied.

After the event completed, he said “… the reason that is so is blah…”

Had he initially just said “don’t kill that NPC” with nothing else, I’d have ignored him. That one little addition (slow down progress) at the end of his sentence was concise and got just enough of the point across that I was curious enough to follow the instruction.

It IS a problem, actually, because they CAN do this not due to “laws of economics” but because you can’t farm anything in this game realistically, so we’re forced to buy it. Jacking up the prices 10-fold is still better than trying to farm most mats.

Please give me an example of something you cannot farm efficiently. Giant eyes? Okay, fair. Iron ore? Silk? Linen? Wool? Platinum? Soft wood? Tons of places to farm these either from nodes or mob drops. The TP provides convenience that you pay for. Flippers don’t create people who don’t want to grind for their mats, the players are responsible for that one.

I grow tired of people blaming speculation for what they themselves are willing to pay. I cannot make you buy something at a set price, that’s your decision. If you claim you cannot be competitive without the TP I will also state that that’s hogwash. There’s nothing in the game you cannot grind out, nothing EXCEPT gem store items and you can convert your gold if you want to so even that is possible through grinding.

You don’t have the time? You don’t want to grind? You pay the going rate or place custom offers at the price you are willing to pay. Stop blaming people who take the time to grind or those that spend a ton of time calculating what will provide profit for them. Even flippers sink gold by relisting the item they bought at a higher price and then pay 5% on a larger amount of gold.

If people have more gold than fits in one account, which I didn’t know was a problem until this post, then so be it, why begrudge someone’s good fortune?

In creating their pile of wealth, what have they taken from you? Can you quantify it or is it pure hyperbole or the traditional have and have not sentiment?

I suspect there’s that resurgent twinge of “well, they’re wealthy, so they musta taken something from me” + “there’s a finite amount of wealth” seeping in somewhere.

If they jack prices up 10 fold and the market is still willing to pay for it, then that’s not a problem. They’re just helping the market for that item reach equilibrium.

It’s a problem because these are basic mats for the game, but the game becomes an economy simulator. You’re better off playing the economic game because you can’t realistically PLAY the real game to earn these things. Yes, this is a problem…

So we’re not arguing in totally abstract terms – which mats and how many do you need?

With a few exceptions (the giant eye thread comes to mind), there are sources of materials all over the place… just sometimes indirect.

Find out what’s valuable and plentiful, obtain those, make (or take advantage of) a market for those, use resultant profit to buy what you need.

There are people in this game who have and im quoting here “more gold than i can store in a single account” who on a daily basis purchase hundreds of thousands of items in order to resell them at a higher price, this creates inflation and benefits no one but the super rich, what im suggesting is a limit to the amount of items that can be purchased in a day wich will reset every 24 hours, because lets face it if this keeps going on our entire economy will collapse.

You would be limiting the major “market makers” (or close to it in this game), meaning we’d all eventually buy almost nothing unless we made a brand new character (and even then, at a reduced rate over time.

Players like us that like to level and actually play alts have no issue (I made a lvl 80 for all classes) the problem is that many items get soulbound instead of account (mainly legendaries and ascended), some other players would like to have WPs be unlocked account wide (it makes no sense imo), rewards being per account instead of per toon and so on.

I think that GW2 is among the most alt friendly MMO I ever played.

I’ve only played one other MMO, and it went just the opposite over time – started with lotsa Bound the Character loot, and went to more Bound to Account over the period of about 2-3 years. GW2 is a very good balance compared to the more stringent first year of that other game.

The problem is there is no reliable way to farm linen (or even silk, cotton and wool). You can’t expect players who are level 80 to enjoy farming lower level monsters with an abysmal drop rate, especially when the alternatives are better. What we need is a good alternative for farming cloths. I think this would solve a lot of the problems regarding this topic.

Also what Behellagh is forgetting is that you mainly get on-level drops. They changed that at some point. At the time it may have been a good change, but now it would seem it’s created another problem. A level 80 can’t go and smell the roses in a lower area as Behellagh thinks we all should and expect to come out with a decent amount of that tier cloth.

Except I have with my 80. Of course your definition of “decent” might be different.

Right – perspective. I find current options very “decent”.

Yah, it took a while for me to find a good region to farm (I resisted the urge to ask around and hunted it out myself) – but you certainly can, and can do so very profitably. Those of you wrapped around the social aspects of the game can probably find out much faster by asking around.

After that decision and redesign, skills being non-synergetic or not worth using will take care of themselves via replacement.

RNG and Grind in GW2 is not that bad

I have less complaint with RNG and grind (although grind could stand to be tuned down a bit) than I do bloody Diminishing Returns.

To clarify the grind comment – Grind doesn’t bother me if rewarding in general (not talking about “as long as I get what I want” – I mean getting something other than a 6cp piece of junk).

You have Windows still set to hide file extensions. Turn them back on. Also /repair, “slash” not “dash”.

Will the trading post EVER get an update?

you are seriously underestimating just how many people use the trading post.
I would even suggest more people use the trading post than wvw.

The trading post right now works for the average GW2 player. It’s not hindering anyone or causing any rage, except for maybe the small 1% of the population that interacts with the TP for the majority of their time logged in (TP traders)

Not arguing the arbitrary 1% figure, because it’s unprovable; but insofar as not hindering – that’s probably true, by literal definition of the word.

But I’d argue it’s less than helpful and deters its own usage by being less effective than it should be – friendlier would mean more usage.

All the various trading post websites have varying strengths in helping filter down specific use cases. The existing in-game TP allows you to search for one-to-two layer deep use cases… most a slight derivation off of “I need a level 34 harpoon gun that’s cheap”.
