and it probably wont. They rarely respond to these forums.

Nor should they where infrastructure security questions are concerned.

This is going to sound stupid, I know, but here goes… check (tap) your fn, control, and alt keys… occasionally I brush those and they “stick” (not mechanically – the OS doesn’t see the key get “unpressed”), which results in behavior identical to what you’re seeing. Tapping each of those three solves it for me. Hopefully that’s what’s causing your weirdness.

Trading post worked fine for me all the way up till last night. Got up this morning and it’s borked again – the FUNCTIONAL UI parts (form fields, controls) show up (i.e. the basic web app parts), but all the “overlay” stuff (thematic icons etc) do not, and the controls that do show up don’t work.

And you perfectly know that doubling 10G by the TP is really risky while getting a good profit from 1000 G is rather easy….

This is an economic and mathematical constant – no matter how hard progressivism says it can change it, it can’t… without resorting to theft.

Those that got to the point where they could leverage capital effectively got there within the constraints of the rules. Stealing gold from them now is changing the rules after they’ve done the work.

I don’t even know why I’m commenting on this since the entire premise (that there’s a problem for non-rich players that stems from the existence of rich players) is fallacious and unproven… again art imitating life. Inequality is only a problem when 1) there’s a finite resource (which there’s not) and 2) it is a direct impediment to others (which it isn’t). Being behind on the treadmill is NOT an impediment… it’s simply annoying.

Due Diligence: I have a grand total of like 14 Gold in my account – I am therefore NOT speaking from a standpoint of protectionism.

So are you asserting that if there were a real life society in which minimal housing, nutrition, and healthcare were all assured, regardless of income level, then income inequality would be a non-issue?

I actually assert that income inequality is a non-issue now, but all the unproven vices of the concept are tied to those problems which is why they must be present before that issue can be raised.

No, the strategy nowadays is to raise an issue with farthest-extreme anecdotal evidence of an actual problem.

I assumed it was easier to obtain but based on the wiki it seems relatively similar sources. Leather from medium armor, 6 salvage items, and 4 Loot bags. Silk from light armor, 4 salvage items, and the same loot bags as leather plus one more for a total of 5.

Some of it is also a function of open world PvE salvaging… playing in the 68-80 range and salvaging yields just wayy too much thick leather and mithril.

Same thing goes for people salvaging 68-80 rares for ecto… you can create a stack of thick leather and mithril in no time.

Can you explain then why people’s accounts are seemingly cursed, and other’s, seemingly blessed? Farm as much as you like, I don’t care, you clearly don’t farm on the same server as I do. People get lucky, yes… and for some reason, they get a lot luckier than others. Not just once.

I get named exo’s from the forge, and that’s as far as it goes. I’ll occasionally get an exo drop (not like the reward chest I mentioned earlier), but that’s as far as it goes. Like I mentioned in my last post which you seem to have glossed over, this is possibly the most stupid RNG mechanic I’ve ever seen in any game. Brutally simplistic retorts don’t help anyone, and are far from productive.

Because RNG is RNG? I really don’t think you understand how statistics and chance work.

Actually you don’t understand how RNG works. Mathematically randomness is never completely random. If you believe otherwise it’s you who need to return to statistics class and learn what the greats have already discovered, there’s always a slant one way or another.

I continued to see reports of this happening after they revamped the magic find system, and supposedly found the 9 month long bug in their loot system. They haven’t fixed it in the least and in fact promise to make things worse with some of their updates if they don’t act soon enough when this launches this month.

I can get behind the “slanting”. My RNG slants one way at first, then the other way on next roll, continuing to keep me at perfect “nolootforyou” range

Like a pack of rabid wolves……..lol

Are we wrong? If so than please provide some input that shows it instead of snide insults.

You haven’t provided any insight on why you are right. Most all you do is argue semantics.

What would be wrong with a progressive tax placed at the end?

It would sink more gold.
It would slow the widening of the wealth gap.
It wouldn’t slow liquidity of trade.

I don’t see anything negative about it tbh. The rich wouldn’t be as rich, but they don’t need to be<—isn’t that one of ya’lls….lol

ALL OVER this anti-rich envy thing… I get the external influence that’s causing this, but this irrational disdain of anyone with anything more than you simply BECAUSE they have more than you is really gonna lead to a miserable life… for all involved

In this game, the fact there exist those who have built (or bought, btw) in-game wealth AND are “richer” than others will ALWAYS be the case. At a bare minimum, because new players keep joining, establishing a new have-not class… under y’all’s redistribution thing, we’d have to stop and revamp the economy every.single.time or we wouldn’t all be equal.

Please accept this fact: No master planning whatsoever will keep the players BOTH 1) completely “equal” in level of wealth and 2) playing the game. The former will result in negation of the latter. If there are no players, this entire conversation is ethereal.

Ohhh capitalist shiny object just popped in my head: I need a couple experienced game coders… given the increasing number of people going down this road in games lately, I think I have a great idea for a new game tailoring to them… thinking Forward!Online is kinda catchy.

Growing up around livestock auctions, they used to bid in 5-10 dollar per head increments at the most (small town)

This would make sense as I am sure heads of cattle sell somewhere between 500 to 1000 dollars, about 1% increments. Notice they don’t go up in 1 penny increments.

Perfect! Then there we go, we agree… once it becomes the established convention, then anet should code it! Problem solved.

Suggestion - More Single Player Content

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: KarateKid.5648

KarateKid.5648

This might sound very much against the standard MMO-esque pattern, but I personally believe GW2 could use slightly more single-player or small-group content. What I am picturing is a dungeon that tests the actions of a single player against a variety of mechanics. A dungeon with, perhaps, NPCs that help with healing or aggro. But mostly single player content that should be challenging.

This would help in the following ways:

A.) There is a stigma against the “bads”. The players who show up to Tequatl or Wurm without knowing what to do. The players have been able to get by with the “run with the group” mentality, as that is all that the living story has offered. And it has been fun. But trying to organize a large group of largely ignorant players has been a nightmare, which is why large groups try to secure overflows. With the upcoming changes to overflows, it is absolutely necessary to introduce mechanics to single players. This is where my idea comes in: have a dungeon that offers a taste of mechanics to come. The pugs get used to the mechanics, which means you can up the challenge in the actual living story without having a large complaint, as the option to “train” on these mechanics will exist, without the need to find a group.

B.) The player’s character means nothing. GW1 (excluding Nightfall because Kormir) made the player character feel useful, as it was all instanced. You could be a hero. In GW2, it is non-instanced largely. With the existence of new NPCs at the forefront of importance, as well as the overwhelming presence of Trahearne, the players feel less important to the story as a whole, and thus, cannot connect with it. With a single player dungeon, the opportunity for the players to MEAN something to the living story is presented. And it would be absolutely invaluable.

C.) A chance to explore the issues with classes on their own. If a certain class simply cannot do enough damage, alone, to complete the single-player dungeon, it is an obvious issue that means a lot for class balancing as a whole.

Just a general idea. I am curious what other people think!

tl;dr: Single player content could help teach new players hard boss mechanics, could make the character feel useful, and could show issues with class balancing.

Let me add one additional, potentially off-topic item… but it goes to the decapitated chickens you mentioned for events like Teq or Wurm… MOST new players (or players who’ve not grouped much) don’t know there’s a teamspeak server up, don’t know there are dedicated channels for the various events, etc.

An in-game VOIP app woulda fixed a LOT of this problem. Commanders trying to type instructions is a recipe for disaster in Wurm… I imagine Teq’s just as difficult if the commander’s not standing in the stack.

Either a teamspeak interface OR simply an in-game note directing players to the ts server would fix it as well; but both of those are fraught with corporate issues I’m not certain anet wants to deal with.

I DO solo a lot, and it’s almost all do-able (dungeons and fractals aside… though some dungeons are an exception if you have the time to learn).

I’ve been in another MMO where like 30-40% of the content was completely un-soloable due to things such as puzzle mechanics, and it’s frustrating not to be able to play such a large portion of the content for which you paid.

GW2 could stand to be tweaked somewhat, but I think they did a good job right out of the box… I’d be afraid too much tweaking could break what we have

I’ve been playing for 6 months. In that frame of time, I’ve gotten 3 precursors. 2 of which dropped within 2 months of each other.
The Energizer, The Hunter, Leaf Of Kudzu

However, I’ve also spent a ton in the gem store. Like.. A looot, way more than I care to say publically. So, it may be RND… It also may be that if you spend a lot in TP your chances will increase significantly. My Magic Find is only 140% and I get a non-stop flow of rare and exotic drops, not in a guild with magic find buffs or anything.

I suspect there’s more to your conspiracy than you think… my son has like almost no magic find, has spent parts of his salary in the store regularly and gets t-6 drops very frequently… like obscenely frequently… almost every drop in Orr.

I have spent no RL money in the store, have 126% MF, and my drop rates are abysmal (materials… although I do get a steady stream of greens).

Official Linux Client

A Linux port may be possible if it was a portable app.

That essentially means that the entire thing is packaged in a way that it can be moved from system to system and will still run without depending on the underlying system. Typically, this involves using special software suite to pack all the dependancies and everything into one executable (typically ELF), so if the system has a Linux kernel, an X server and OpenGL, it will run.

Guild Wars 2 is already a portable app on Windows if you ignore the DirectX runtime, unlike other games which must be painstakingly installed first.

I’d absolutely pass out if JUST the OpenGL support was implemented… then the only complaint with using Wine would be gone.

First, could someone please post the link to the previous thread?

What if someone is selling something for 10 Gold, and I’m willing to buy it for 9 Gold 99 Silver and 99 Copper? If I put in a Buy Order for that amount, with your idea, someone wouldn’t be able to fill my order.

If you are buying items worth 10 gold, then 1 copper has no real value to you any more. You would have purchased the item for 10 gold instead of wasting your time with a buy order.

Also, if 10 gold is effectively equal to 9 gold 99 silver and 99 copper, why should someone be allowed to come after my listing and sell the same item for the “same price” and get priority over me?

How often do you see real auctions going “Do I hear 10 thousand” … “here” … “Do I hear 10 thousand and 1 penny”?

This change would just force people that undercut to undercut at an effectively different price and hopefully remove the profitable difference between the buy and sell price. This would closer resemble a real market.

But your analogy doesn’t hold true to market preferences/convention… in the RL auction (I presume you mean MOST auctions, because fun or charity auctions I’ve seen HAVE used really small increments), people EXPECT to pay in certain increments. Growing up around livestock auctions, they used to bid in 5-10 dollar per head increments at the most (small town).

In GW2, convention is currently set based upon item type and velocity (I move prices in ~5-10 PERCENT for slow-moving items like meh exotics, but undercut by 1 copper for materials, for example).

This 1% increment problem is easy to fix…

All you have to do is call for a player movement wherein everyone moves items using 1% model. Once the majority of the player base joins this movement, it would simply be a quality of life improvement request for the devs… I mean, at that point the HUGE number of players voluntarily moving their items in 1% chunks will become annoyed.

I do look forward to this movement starting up… I’ll signal my support for it by undercutting 1 copper.

unsure how many people server hop at the perma node. if it’s in the thousands I would think to see a change in ori, as that would be 6 less per toon/per day. If it is not in the thousands I don’t expect to see much change in ori. I do recall a time I had a couple alts I rarely used parked there. It seemed to me I seen a good share of what I assumed was server hoppers. People appearing and disappearing frequently.

See, this is my thought as well. I’ve known you can server hop since like week one (I’ve been playing a year), but it’s actually just not worth it to me to do so. It might work out in the math; but it wasn’t enjoyable, so I didn’t do it.

3 reasons why you are wrong

1) Silk revealed a clear insider trading….posted even on the forum…
2) Silk market change was like using a chainsaw for an haircut….did it need an economist?
3) speculators is what made the situation worse removing lot of supply from the market to release it slowly……so demand/offer was manipulated
People posted so proudly your banks full of silk and they plans to capitalize on an aggravated false lack of supply….

but once again whenever you try to touch the most broken part of the game, the TP players hurry to submerge any discussion with hate and sarcasm so they can avoid any discussion…[/quote]

I certainly hope you’re not referring to my posts re: hate. Sarcasm I’ll accept.

So, by your logic, if I were to start hoarding worthless mithril or copper now gambling that Anet makes a change that made them more valuable in the future, I am conspiring to manipulate the market? What if I lose everything I invested because they don’t?

The insider trading thing was a pure human mistake (in judgement, it’s arguable, but marketing people aren’t “normal” humans and think strangely) – it’s not an integral and designed part of the economy’s mechanics.

You are processing what you buy, and reselling something else.

That’s fine.

What should not be possible is buying stuff with the only intention on selling it again.

Use or sell, not both, and crafting is using.

This makes no sense whatsoever. By buying various loot bags and dumping their contents on the TP, I take an underutilized commodity (bags), apply “labor” (or add value, one could argue), and sell the contents on the TP thereby increasing the supply of those contents. Obviously the seller of the bag didn’t wanna do it, and I did due to profit motive – win-win.

Ummm, how do you personally measure inflation, if you dont have any compelling data on how the general gold rewards per day/player inflated in the same timespan?

The cost of any demanded good.
Sigils, runes, silk, precursors, T6, gems and so on….

And as we already discussed you can see most of them raising even when gold production decrease (see after queen jubilee..) and in any case the change in price NEVER reflects actual gold production (stimated because nobody has numbers).

P.S. season 2 WWW means also a gold decrease and lot of more gold sinks….prices are skyrocketing instead.

How has the utility of each of the items you mentioned performed over time? Except for precursors (no, bro, I don’t even legendary, heheh), it’s gone up for all you mentioned.

Silk is an example of why this was a good thing – I remember just throwing silk away because it didn’t have enough utility to make it actually worth saving (kinda like mithril today).

When utility goes up, the demand does, too… this was not JUST professional-class TP-traders doing this – unless you call the throngs of people flushing sigils down the Mystic Toilet on weekends professional-class traders.

The more I’ve looked, the more I’ve figured out what the utility is… ex: until about 3 weeks ago, I couldn’t fathom WHY people would buy bloody pebbles – they upgrade from garbage into… garbage.

Once I saw the number of Silver Doubloons required to build one of the legendaries, I realized it was not an Illuminati plot. If you wanna blame someone for inflation of certain items, blame the people creating legendaries – THEY set the price, traders react to THEM.

So far, just about everything except junk can be made, forged, or salvaged into something appealing. Find that correlation, and you find the market driver. Once you do, though, beware: someone will jump on the forums hollering “nerf the rich” right about the time you start profiting.

An increase in the tax rate would simply get passed on to consumers, with a little bit being absorbed by sellers. It would not be an effective tax on the rich.

Ok, that sounds reasonable.

But please allow me ask: According to your (or everybody else’s) professional expertise, what would be “an effective tax on the rich” that would help to fight the dire income inequality within the game? Or is this social inequality among player characters something we just have to accept as set in stone?

~MRA

What’s the point of taxing the rich, other than to punish success? Shall we force a downgrade on all players of level 80, or maybe just those with ascended gear. It seems to me that the only reason you want to tax people is because you are jealous of their success and that you want Anet, to be your instrument of vengeance.

No – if you haven’t picked up on it, these are the people in real life who make these same ridiculous arguments. They’d be ecstatic if tomorrow, Anet announced all gear will be Anet’s property, will be nerfed to the average of all their respective stats, and doled out as Anet sees fit.

No idea what’s really the case; but if this were a word processor or web publishing app, I’d say somewhere there’s a misplaced newline in the UI layout.

This is not happening in Linux. Dunno about Windows… don’t have a Windows box to test.

I lied accidentally. this DOES sometimes happen under Wine in Linux, but it’s intermittent. Relog fixes in Linux, usually.

I was having the same “off” / overlapping issue in Linux. I fixed it by installing the Microsoft Core Fonts (Arial and such) from my package manager and restarting Xorg. Mac OS should have those already, so I’m not sure what would cause it there. /shrug

The prices being on multiple lines in the sell interface is still a constant for me. It’s only mildly annoying though, and is totally deal-with-able.

Just tossing this out there, for any Linux users that stumble across this thread.

Huh, I’ll check it… I coulda sworn I installed the corefonts.

They should have given an option to use this…. Personally I find it annoying and it has made me RAGE QUIT. Not fun in my opinion.

edit: A “Bobble-Toggle”?

~24 hours from now, it’ll be like it never happened.

To be honest, my charr has an infinite toy soldier tonic just for jumping puzzles. It’s sometimes a pain to do some stuff in caves. Especially the one in lions arch where you go down the sewers first it a pain in the kitten

God kitten why did I not think of this. Thank you!

Indeed – put this in the players helping players thread!

How to level up fast?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

My /age on the character I’m working on now is a little over 16 hours. He’s level 38 without doing any crafting. That’s pretty fast. It’s an alt so I started him with some funds. But aside from the cost of bags I’ve been about breaking even so far. I’ve been vendoring greens, and salvaging blues/whites for crafting later – haven’t sold a single crafting material.

I guess I can kind of understand you not wanting to do other starting areas. But at the same time, except for a roleplay/immersion aspect of it, it matters little in the long run. Or are you worried about being bored redoing content on another character. Because you will eventually end up redoing content.

I doubt you’d get to 38 in the time I did doing this, but you could just repeat events in a starter area. it’s boring but effective. The norn area is great for events.

Just to give you an idea, these are the maps I’ve completed on the way to 38 thus far (in this order);

Queensdale, Caladon Forest, Plains of Ashford, Kessex Hills, Brisban Wildlands, Gendarran Fields, Snowden Drifts, Warfarer Foothills

Another reason I’ve leveled fast(ish) is because I’ve already done the content on other characters. I know what to do and where to go. Being a thief helps for movement and damage too, especially since I’ve been upgrading to masterwork gear at each interval, and just recently rare weapons at level 35. With 25 stacks of bloodlust as a glass cannon, dual pistols annihilates single targets, and shortbow makes short work of multiple targets.

You may experience things much differently on a different profession.

Since crafting is so expensive, I suggest not doing crafting prior to level 40 as getting to 40 is pretty easy compared to the 40-60 level gap. After 60, I feel it gets pretty easy again but some may argue that.

This is my 5th character I’ll get to 80 so I do have quite a bit of experience. It’s my 2nd thief. I like glass cannon ranged build for PvE and Dungeons specifically. But it’s horrible in WvW. I got sick of being squishy, or taking the time to swap gear/weapons/traits. So I said the heck with it, and made the 2nd thief.

No, 1 lvl/2 hrs is totally realistic – 1 level per hour is about par for a brand new character (since they dunno what DE’s are where).

The advice for crafting 40-60 is also legit. For me, it’s 50-60 that are so slow, but I can see the 40’s.

Mesmer has been my slowest leveler thus far because I went shatter and you just have to wait on the illusions to do their thing.

New Account Restrictions

I agree – the restrictions gradually taper off, but when My son and I first started playing it was frustrating that it wasn’t communicated more clearly. We thought the game was bugged.

I hadda jump on the forums and search to find out what was going on. At that point, I totally got it, but was on the verge of shelving the product for a minute.

It’d be interesting to see GW2’s “first-7-days” attrition rate and know whether they were related to new account restrictions.

I expect April 1 will be the announcement of the native mac client, that will be ported so that windows players can have a client that bugs out every 3 updates.

Report reason on exploiters

KarateKid.5648

That’s kinda strange – if they KICK someone unexpectedly in order to do so, I’d think that was harassment/griefing. If they just sell the slot, that’s neither an exploit nor against ToS/AUP, or whatever.

will there be a patch tomorrow?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

KarateKid.5648

If they hold true to form, you can “feel” the staging of the patch during evening tonight or up till noon CDT tomorrow.

Assuming they’re not under DDOS at the time, it is unusual/unexplained lag for about 3-5 minutes, then it clears up.

Felt it last patch for Dragonbrand just a few minutes before the patch went live.
