A client for Linux

KarateKid.5648

I play on Linux primarily and Mac (macbook) ot do stuff like BLTP and crafting.

My only two complaints with playing on Linux are the fact we can’t see the BLTP due to chrome (or is it chromium?) and the lower framerates cited by Jenni M Veran above. The former is why I use Mac for BLTP.

I do not crash, and using a script, I can use all 8 CPU cores (albeit, even on a single core, it’s still fast).

But if it would alleviate these two issues, I’d love to see a native client as well (even if perpetually beta like the Mac client)!

Please stop neglecting conditions in PvE

in Tequatl Rising

KarateKid.5648

Another way to solve this would be to add more (different) conditions to the game and make bosses selectively immune to certain ones.

As it stands now, we have small-damage over time spread across a handful of condition types. Adding anything above 25 is a waste of time, as it does nothing at all.

If anet had more condition types, the “small” could be stacked across several types of DoT, making them worthwhile additions to a battle.

Make world bosses and above immune to certain ones and more sensitive to others, if you want to add strategy; but effectively, World bosses are currently immune to a HIGH percentage of ALL damage potential (i.e. when measured over the lifetime of a fight, any attempt to stack a condition above 25 is thrown away – that might as well be immunity). My thief will apply like 3-4 conditions in the first 60 seconds of a fight, and perhaps maintain those every ~30 seconds.

With 8 million players (ok, exagerrated) on a boss, that equates to about 30 seconds or so of their participation in a fight being something other than DPS (Power).

I’m going with the assumption that the addition of conditions (hey, I made a RHYME!) is planned for the future – because I’m an optimist.

Feature Request: Editable Journal

KarateKid.5648

What is it with modern games and not having a journal where you can jot notes in-game?

I made a request in the crafting section for a list of disciplines across all other characters, but if that’s a bit much, how about just a free-text area in-game where we can jot notes?

An example of what would suffice is the journal in the classic Baldur’s Gate II: SOA. It didn’t allow for formatting or anything fancy – just basic text.

That whole attention deficit thing could be aided by such a feature

ArenaNet, I’d love to see somewhere in the UI a per-character list of crafting disciplines.

I have one character who has several trained, but even if it were only two disciplines per character, it’d still be nice to be able to see via UI what they all have trained. As it is, I forget who’s trained in what and have to log in to each to check.

Yah, I know paper, but that’s so 19th century.

We can’t really argue reasonable or logical when talking about a heroic character who can do the things our characters can

That said, a huge part of the AI of the mobs are assumptions about player character mobility. If the latter changed, the combat AI for all the mobs would have to be changed. Now that I think about it, so would AoE radii (radiuses?), since they are also designed on such assumptions.

I don’t PvP, but I can see an argument there in that it’d make for a more exciting combat “feel”, but not in PvE.

Pace of new content - TOO FAST

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: KarateKid.5648

KarateKid.5648

Just another glowing example of the moniker you can’t please everyone. So many mmos have had forums filled with complaints that they aren’t adding new content fast enough. Now a game does it every two weeks and thats too fast.

New Flash: You don;t have to do the living world content. Take a break a skip an event if yo want, since more thna half of them are available for the full month these days you can always come back in the second part and do it. Look at SAB its still open until the end of the month so you can go back and complete things. Not getting every achievement for a living world category is not the end of the world. Play the game in a way thats fun for you. and ignore all the players saying you must play it this way or that way or have the highest achievement score or work on a legendary or get this or that, just have fun.

Although some in this thread have said what you’re citing, there’s an underlying nugget of feedback to the developers, too, that is important:

It’s not that we “have” to play the LW content; it’s that we are NOT (or are gonna STOP, in some cases) playing it – for whatever reason (annoyance, rl time constraints, sense of hopelessness to complete achievements, quality, etc).

If I were the producer, I’d listen hard and long to that, because it means some portion of the population is NOT going to consume a product I have put out… meaning there’s diminished ROI (the most obvious “return” being continued adoption or play time in the game).

I have no idea how many people are religiously playing the LW content, but you can be sure ArenaNet can mine that data. If the combination of the analytics from said mining identifies a relevant lack of adoption, the prudent business decision is to determine “why” – that’s where the forum posts come in.

Undercutting

KarateKid.5648

There’s also a short-term trick involving pretty precise timing.

Assume you have a metric kitten ton of Supply Bags

If you can pick a time when a lot are about to be dumped onto the market (right after the Modnir event, for example), you can drop the price about 4 cp, and many of those that follow you will sell for a cp or two lower just because they want to get rid of those “free” drops from playing the event chain.

If you can get into that stream and do it a handful or so at a time at varying points, the players will help you drop it down a hefty percentage.

You can set a really low buy price in there, pick up some el cheapos along the way.

If you stack ENOUGH sells in there (say upwards of 1000 in most cases except cloth), you can set a false “ceiling”, and the players themselves will keep lowering the price because they know getting through 1000+ sells “takes too long”.

Takes a significant amount of sell resources and timing, but a busy weekend will allow that to happen. It’s also risky as hell.

If you see a false ceiling in place, wait till Sunday night, they will USUALLY clear out as the architects take them back down for crafting or whatever reason they’re doing it.

EDIT: additionally, since a good majority of those will clear out Sunday night, you can look at the sell list, identify a ceiling or two, and post your sell order higher than those.

No idea if what I just typed makes sense to anyone else but me.

There’s little strategy (I’ll grant dodge-rolling waves, teams dealing with health issues, poison)… it’s mainly the same as the other world boss fights (although the interludes with the jump pads etc are fun) – beat a bag of hit points that just stands there. Very static, primarily DPS.

The challenge comes from the players/team.

I’m actually a bit ‘worried’ about China. Just look at the trailer they had and the # of views – they only have 44K in a month. That’s a really, really low number.

But then again, I don’t even know if the Chinese use youtube as their main video site. They don’t even use twitter or google.

youtube is an illegal site in china. None of those views come from their chinese playerbase.

Which is also why it would be difficult to launch an MMO there unless it is TOTALLY Chinese players only. And changes would have to be made to some of the political story lines.

If the original intent was anti-bot, this is a complete non-starter idea. Nor is it a feature market-timing flippers would use, given they are availing themselves of volatility.

But for the average adventurer leveling in open world (with at least 50% of their loot being sold at the ask value), it would be handy.

I have no clue where Anet get’s it’s demographics from? To think gamers have THAT kind of disposable income to spend. How about charge less and make it up in volume? It’s not like you have reproduction cost, it’s virtual!

:)

You’d be surprised at how much money some people are willing to dump into virtual currency. There was a thread over in General Discussion about mini collectors who were peeved that Mr Sparkles was a (potential) Gamescon exclusive and therefore it permanently ruins their ability to complete the collection. Some of these collectors have spent thousands of dollars on gems to get all the minis. Likewise, we don’t have any concrete figures, but I’m willing to bet that those Legendaries selling for thousands of gold on the TP get bought too.

I remember reading an interview from Zynga (the makers of Farmville) who said that less than 5% of their players spent any money in their cash shop, but the 5% that did, spent MILLIONS. If that’s a reflection of what the gamer demographic is like, it’s not hard to imagine that the people pumping money into the gem store far outweighs any sales in bulk that ANet might pick up by pricing these goods cheaper.

I’ll never do it again, but I spent about 2 grand on my and my son’s transactions in DDO over like 4 years. All from $.50 to 2 bucks a transaction here and there except for a few $5-9 purchases of quest packs and one huge expansion there at the end. Stupid, but I can see how that can happen… it sneaks up on you.

Does Magic find really work?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: KarateKid.5648

KarateKid.5648

It does work. The problem is what it does is actually relatively limited and doesn’t always work as players expect it to.

For a start it only affects drops from enemies. It doesn’t help with chests, bags, quest/dungeon rewards etc. And you’re still limited to what’s normally in those enemies loot tables. You can boost your magic find as high as it will go and you’ll still never (for example) get a precursor from an enemy who is below level 80 because it’s not in their loot table.

On top of that it only gives you a percentage chance at better loot. I’m not sure what the base chance is (I think it varies between enemies) but the example the wiki uses is that if you have a 1/10 chance of getting a rare item then a 200% magic find boost will raise that to a 3/10 chance.

The only time I’ve noticed any difference from magic find is when I was running around Southsun with the 200% boost. With less than that I suspect you’d have to record all your drops to be able to really see any difference.

It’s also important to remember that rarity is determined entirely by the games categories. The algorithm doesn’t care if a particular green item has 1000+ copies selling for 1s each on the TP. It still classifies it as rarer and more valuable than all blue items. Likewise it also doesn’t allow for the demand on particular crafting materials. So in some cases farming with higher magic find can actually hurt your chances of getting what you wanted.

Overall if your aim is to make more gold then higher magic find will help you. If you’re aiming for specific drops then it depends greatly on what you’re going for and where it might come from. It might help, it might not. It might even hurt your chances if the magic find doesn’t affect your chance and you’re sacrificing other stats which could allow you to complete attempts faster and therefore do more in the same time period.

Pretty much this – MF plus a slew of mobs will make a significant difference in your gold per hour.

Once I heard MF was changing significantly, I swapped all my MF gear out to survivability gear. As soon as I did that, I noticed fewer exotics and rares over a play session.

Because that’s subjective, I define “fewer” as: out of three 18-slot bags, I previously got approximately 1-3 exotics and 3-5 rares per session of (for example) running 8-10 events in the North of the Hirathi Hinterlands (that’s 2.5-ish runs of the chain starting at the Hirathi attack on the two outposts before I’d get bored and change to something else).

After changing to non-MF gear, I’d get 1-2 of each for the same session. With just my character/account-based MF (3%, I believe), lots of greens still drop, and more blues than I can count.

Making Gold?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: KarateKid.5648

KarateKid.5648

You don’t really HAVE to farm in this game to enjoy yourself. If you just participate in events etc then you just collect gold as you go. If you feel the need to farm to enjoy yourself then you are doing something wrong – i.e. stop being so tight and BUY some gems with real gold rather than expect to get everything for nothing handed to you on a silver platter like so many on here seem to. Free to Play does not equal Free for everything you want in the game! if you don’t like the thought of buying things with real world money then be prepared to farm for the gold…that is your decision.

I have to admit this is very true. I have taken advantage of the Trading Post to flip items (or container contents) a LOT; but running various zergs, the current invasions and/or pavillion zergs, or just flat-out playing a little of EVERYTHING PvE (events, hearts, explorers, puzzles) are – in descending order – probably the least boring of the ways to make gold. Dungeons are in there somewhere, too.

2 things:

-split WvW and PvE culling settings. For wvw i might want to have maximum possible FPS, thus sacrificing graphics. In PvE i might prefer to see more fancy and shiny stuff. Re-doing all the setting everytime hopping in and out of wvw is incredibly annoying.

-wasn’t culling a client-side thing? Well, put a check box for “enable – disable culling” – for pve manly. My pc is bad, but i preferred 1000 times seeing only a part of ppl but decently, rather then seeing now a crowd of stickmans (of a horrible pink color, btw).

Inb4 “buy a new rig or GPU” : not everybody is lucky enough to do so. And i played the game fine for 1 year, seeing things changed this way with no option even to keep old settings is incredibly annoying – as long as it’s a client side thing as they always said…

Here’s what’s odd – both for your complaint and the people who are snarking about “buy a new rig”… I have 32GB RAM, 3.6 Ghz 8-core processor and a 1GB nVidia graphics card… not the greatest setup, but not a slouch, either.

When they removed culling, my game performance actually INCREASED. That shouldn’t have happened, logically… less items should have been better, but just the opposite occurred.

I don’t think “new rig” is relevant or helpful, and that something else is interacting for those who are getting decreased performance – OS settings, BIOS, etc.

I died like three times in a row trying to take on too many yesterday evening with two other players while a handful stood around waiting on a champ spawn (We just wanted to see if we could) – we eventually took a few of the trash out. Scarlet events ppl failing it to farm champs

in Clockwork Chaos

This is another Ember Champion (Anchorage) situation. This has to stop. I had to litteraly run like hell/waypoint like hell to get all events done in time. I even skipped a lot of loot. Meanwhile some hardcore farmers stayed on the same events and semi-afk (they even bragged about it), farmed the champs.

In my opinion, those people do not deserve the succes chest. If it wasn’t for me, kinda sacraficing a lot of loot in the process, (and a few other commanders, but most other commanders were troll farmers, like 6 of them), we would not have made it in time.

Again, the wrong people (the lazy, fail happy, greedy, unfriendly, the list goes on…), get the most rewards. Wrong Anet. You are rewarding the wrong people in my opinion. Provoking a fail to an event, should have consequenses, and now it doesn’t. Can you please do a similar fix, like you did on the Ember champ farming. Thanks.

What I find humorous about all the complaints regarding purposefully failing events is how much it sounds like “Mom! sibling did something wrong while you weren’t looking!”

I loved it – but as I’ve said elsewhere, having NPCs refer to Divinity’s Reach as “DR” is extremely immersion breaking. Scarlet might as well have said “LOL” instead of laughing.

Otherwise, I found it fantastic.

Actually, that caught my attention, too – but for a different reason – I chalked it up to her personality… kinda like those people who append “-ster” to everything. “The Frank-ster!” etc.
