Server can't even get to Scarlet

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Try guesting to one of the very high PVE population servers e.g. Blackgate, Tarnished Coast.

You’re doing this specifically to get into an overflow as you wont get in to the main map. If the queue pops telling you that a space has opened ignore it and chose to stay where you are, this is critical because if you move, you’ll end up in a less populated overflow and not the server map you were expecting.

If you load into LA between about quarter to and ten to the hour, you ought to end up in an overflow that fills up with other players also arriving specifically for the fight.

Do I have to upgrade my spinal back pack?

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Kaz.5430

Kaz.5430

You don’t need the spinal blades at all to get the new helmet and anyone that tells you otherwise doesn’t understand. The only thing you ‘need’ spinal blades for is the achievement for equipping exotic blades. They are not ‘needed’ for any other purpose at all.

The helmet is a rewarded for ascending to the Breachmaker and finishing the story. This is done by defeating all 3 watchknights in LA (on the hour) and then entering the portal to the airship. This portal requires you to have walked through the red, green and blue circles to get the attunement, and does not require having spinal blades. Once on the Breachmaker you then defeat another boss and in doing so get access to the final story instance where the title and helm get awarded. This also doesn’t require spinal blades.

OR

You can equip spinal blades and use the portal near the old diving board to skip the entire boss encounter and go right to the end. This ‘does’ require the spinal blades, but doesn’t award anything extra, just lets you finish the content on ‘easy mode’.

I agree the wording was strange, but that particular thread was asking about leaked content.

There’s obviously a big difference between discussing leaked content and discussing and theorising about what future patches may entail. Leaks can only come from someone breaking an NDA, breaking an embargo, or data-mining the client (all of which are against agreements that will have been made between the person leaking and ANet/NCSoft).

Draygo, while you’re right in the sense that a lot of companies use noreply, some – not all – mail servers are specifically configured to double-check if a mailbox exists or not, before deciding what to do with an email. Sending emails from an address that actually exists will avoid problems with those particular servers.

On another side of things, although I’ve not received an email from guildwars2@ncsoft.com for a while, and so things might have changed, the emails I do have give no indication that it’s a noreply address and that replies will be bounced.

Newbie request regarding Scarlet's minions

in Living World

Posted by: Kaz.5430

Kaz.5430

Qaelyn,

Originally the event was based around 3 waves of minions. When you killed the first wave, the second wave would start and in addition to that wave you would either have to kill the Aetherblades or the Molten.

Then, assuming the Aetherblade/molten wave was defeated, when the third wave of minions started, the other faction (aether or molten) would pop up.

You had to destroy all 5 waves within the time limit, and if you did so, Scarlet spawns somewhere on the map and you had to defeat her too (within a 5 minute timer if I recall correctly).

Now, everything is separate so instead of 5 overlapping waves (3 minions, 1 aether, 1 molten) there are 5 chained waves in a set order, plus Scarlet of course (who drops a chest on defeat). All of which now has to be done within the timer (as far as I know that includes the fight with scarlet too).

Make sure that if you defeat the 5th wave (3rd wave of minions) that you are ready to map travel to wherever scarlet pops up.

Whether it fully resolves the issues, fixing SPF is a good start.

If you want some additional notes that might help the process of improving the ability for gw2 emails to arrive in the mailboxes, then a couple of good sites to do SMTP checks from are Check SMTP (http://testsmtp.tcsoftware.net) and MX Toolbox (http://mxtoolbox.com).

When you put the email address “guildwars2@ncsoft.com” through the checks at Check SMTP, it fails because the “guildwars2” mailbox does not actually exist on any of the mail servers listed with MX records.

Mail that comes from a mailbox that does not exist has a much higher probability of being classified as spam.

Also, killing anything under water around the tower (even around the back which is quite a way from the heart NPC) counts towards the heart.

Watchwork Sprockets

Sprockets are used as crafting materials for some of the better runes and sigils in the game. Although you needed to use them to buy the recipes from the QP vendors while you had the chance.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Watchwork_Sprocket

Superior Rune of Perplexity requires 250 sprockets to craft, and sells for 1.5 gold on the TP for one rune (of the required 6 for a full set).

Superior Rune of Tormenting is approaching 1g each.

Superior Sigil of Bursting is 2.5 gold

Superior Sigil of Malice is 1.5 gold

Superior Rune of Exuberance is 2 gold

These high value runes and sigils, each require 250 of the sprockets per superior item. Once the numbers available start to go down, the price for the sprockets should be a pretty safe money maker.

Anet art and GW2 fanarts sold on Ebay

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Kaz.5430

Kaz.5430

Part of the problem here is that Fanart artists are NOT the copyright holders to the content. Ebay is probably not acting on the OP’s requests because it needs to come from Anet’s legal department. So unfortunately, of all the art that’s being sold, no one but Anet can request for it to stop. I would suggest that the OP contact the Guild Wars Community Team and share the concerns with this e-mail address: community@arena.net

That’s not entirely true. They are not the ‘exclusive’ copyright owners.

NCSoft might own the IP to the Guildwars universe, but unless the ‘fan art’ is a direct edit of NCSoft owned artwork, NCSoft cannot claim ‘ownership’ and distribute the artwork themselves (without permission from the artist). However, the OP also cannot `distribute` the artwork (unless they have permission) because it could be considered a derivative work of NCSoft IP. She still ‘owns’ it and ebay ought to respond to her take down request.

Looking at that particular image, I think NCSoft (if they actually want to, which I don’t think they would anyway) would have trouble arguing much copyright at all. If they tried, due to it’s cartoony nature, if the OP argued it was a Parody it would be classified as `Fair Use` if it went to court (between the OP and NCSoft).

But this is all getting off track because the OP isn’t trying to commercially distribute her work anyway. The OP is perfectly within her rights to tell ebay to remove the listing, and they should so do based on her request. That’s the important thing here.

But even if she actually wanted to make commercial prints herself she could probably do so without any issue at all from NCSoft. But asking would be a better plan, and I suspect that they’d most likely give her permission if she asked for it. But that wasn’t what she was trying to do so it’s not really an issue.

Anet art and GW2 fanarts sold on Ebay

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Kaz.5430

Kaz.5430

The report item functionality tells you to report directly to VeRO (ebay). Reporting to DA is irrelevent.

This is what you need to complete
http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/tp/vero-rights-owner.html

You own the copyright to your work, if you’ve not given him commercial rights to produce posters, then Ebay have to take it down following your request. Otherwise they are selling stolen goods and also breaking the law.

Uploading artwork to DA doesn’t give up your rights, you simply give DA the non-exclusive rights to display the work and to make prints only if you chose to enable that functionality. Only DA would then have the rights to make prints and you’d be making money from the process.

You could also pursue this through the courts if you wanted, but it would be an expensive international battle unless you’re also in australia. It looks like his entire stock is stolen IP. Hopefully NCSoft will use their muscle to take them to court, and you can piggyback on the back of the case.

Angry at lack of invasions in overflow

in Clockwork Chaos

Posted by: Kaz.5430

Kaz.5430

I understand the issues, I hope Anet can get it together. I wish they would open up more servers. Guess it’s not in the budget.

I think it’s more to prevent the invasion being farmed using overflows, a bit like what happened with the ‘one-off’ karka event still happening 5 hours after the even was supposed to be over.

i.e.

Someone turns up at 40 past and ends up being the first person in a new overflow. The event starts in his overflow with a fresh 45 minute timer, 40 mins after it was supposed to start. People then start finishing up the invasions that started on the hour as intended, and then party-join mates on the later starting overflow to continue farming it for 15 mins, until the hour goes by and they move to the next invasion.

Angry at lack of invasions in overflow

in Clockwork Chaos

Posted by: Kaz.5430

Kaz.5430

Invasions do occur in overflows, but only overflows that exist during the first 10 minutes of an invasion. If all overflows are full and a new one gets created after 10 past, it wont have the invasion.

Basically, if you try to join an invasion between the start of the hour, and 10 past you will definitely get to an invasion map or an invasion overflow.

If you try to join an invasion between 10 past the hour and 15 past the hour, you’ll probably get to an invasion map.

If you try to join an invasion later than quarter past the hour, it’s pretty much down to luck. You might find an overflow that’s not full, you might end up in a spot from someone who DC’d or joined a party on a different server/overflow. But chances are you’re more likely to end up in an overflow that was created after 10 past.

Hopefully, as the event goes on, zerg sizes will reduce and it’ll become easier to join a map, but if they stay as they are, you need to make sure you join the invasion between the hour and 10 past if you want to be sure.

e.g.

Once you’ve claimed rewards from completing the invasion on Gendarren Fields, if you complete another invasion on the Gendarren Field map you wont get another reward for completion. Until the next day.

You can however, continue to get invasion rewards ‘today’, by completing invasions on a different map. One invasion reward per account, per map, per day.

Colin is actually Pro-Gnashblade, it was Anthony Ordon (one of the game designers) who dropped the hint the OP refers to.

Your rebuff misses one key factor, Abbadon escaping his fate via the mists, even if `possible`, is not going to happen.

It would cheapen GW1, undo all the lore, and the players that care about the lore, not to mention the authors who’ve spent time writing official Guildwars fiction, wouldn’t like it. Also, the same gods who defeated him are going to be there in the fractal with him, do you really think they’d let him through?

If it was the Nightfall fall of Abbadon then it would be a whole different thing, you could make a Fractal that’s at just the right point that he could escape through and be thought dead, but it’s been confirmed its the pre-GW1 fall by Colin.

Thaumanova however has no issues of conflict regarding previous lore and offending long-term players. The story can be taken wherever they want, links closely to the current main storyline, and therefore it is far more likely to break out of Fractals into Living Story content.

That’s not to say the OP’s inference is correct, but unlike the ‘rebuff’ it could be.

Belcher's Bluff strategy: how to beat Adnul

in Bazaar of the Four Winds

Posted by: Kaz.5430

After being sick of losing to Adnul I decided to cheat using one of the boxes of fun that were just sitting taking up inventory space, that I got from achievement boxes.

The first post suggests to set the box of fun to transforms only. I tried that and still ended up losing. However, the next match the box had slipped out of that mode and petrified me. I was about to change out of the state, when I realised that petrification = belcher’s bluff invincibility mode.

I was at full health, remained petrified, health did not change at all due to being petrified, and rather than transforming back, I just stayed petrified until Adnul drank himself to a loss. The only thing you really need to worry about when petrified is adnul taking so long to kill himself that the box expires.

My point was more to point out that 500 AP is the ‘next’ tier, not the current one. Based on map chat conversations, a lot of people seem to think that they’ve already received the 500 AP reward for some reason.

[API Suggestion] MD5 Checksum API

in API Development

Posted by: Kaz.5430

Kaz.5430

With a header-based solution, I think ANet still has to generate the response and my server still has to download it.

Unless of course I was to implement some sort of apache level solution that would intelligently parse the header and then break the connection some how. I’m not sure on the technical side of that, but I’d assume that the ANet server still needs to generate the content and probably upload it. All I’m doing is using API server resources, and then binning the output because I don’t need it.

If ANet are generating and uploading the json response anyway, and I’m downloading it anyway then I could just take an md5 hash from the download and do the checksum comparison locally. The whole point is to prevent ANet parsing and uploading superfluous data, and then my server downloading it.

On the subject of ‘what if the response was smaller than 32 characters’. It wouldn’t have to be an MD5 hash, a smaller length CRC hash would probably work just as well, so would the size of the output in bits, or a unix timestamp. MD5 was literally the first thing I thought of, and I could imagine how ANet might implement the API. However, if you’re expecting less data than the hash, you’d not bother asking for the hash because doing so would not be beneficial to either the ANet API sever, nor your own.

Sending a hash with every request is also over-kill. The API server would need to be constantly using resources to generate a value that a lot of people would ignore anyway. This idea is more for larger apps that ask for a lot of content that doesn’t change all that much. You’d hope it would be the larger apps that have more users that take advantage of the caching options, in order to speed up their app.

If the API services take off, then eventually ANet will need to implement some form of authentication and query limiting solution. Amazon for example limits authenticated users to 2000 queries an hour (plus additional queries based on how much they sell) and after that queries will produce a 503 error until the next hour. That’s basically 1 query every 2 seconds. Scripts using the map API – especially if combined with real-time event status for every map on every server – are likely to bring about the need for rate limiting quicker, unless people implement local caching.

Lets say you have a map script in which every time a user zooms or moves to generate a new view of the map, it calls https://api.guildwars2.com/v1/map_floor.json?continent_id=1&floor=1. That’s currently a 427KB document that has probably not changed between calls. Likewise calling all the individual tiles adds up to a lot of upload from the API server and – depending on implementation – download to the client, and possibly your server.

Now lets imagine your app has 500 concurrent users, all requesting the 427KB map response and a selection of tiles simultaneously and repetitively. Caching the map information and images locally would likely lead to a faster experience for your app, and would equate to far less load on the API server.

The information that comes in large responses is pretty much static. Having some way of querying to see if anything in the world map has changed, to establish if the api is returning more information for a map, or to see if a tile jpg has been changed – without having to downloading the lot – would be significantly faster and reduce load.

To me, whether this functionality is provided as an MD5 api, or something else doesn’t really matter all that much. An MD5 hash was just what came to mind first.

[API Suggestion] MD5 Checksum API

in API Development

Posted by: Kaz.5430

Kaz.5430

I’m talking about caching in the context of storing the parsed json responses in a local relational database so that you can query that database for frequently requested content, instead of asking the server for the same response over and over.

The build updates any time a bug is hotfixed, so a new build doesn’t mean that there have been changes to whatever you’re querying the API for.

As I see it, any efficient script that has anything to do with items or maps should be storing the information locally but checking that the copy it has stored is still valid. There is absolutely no point in calling a 200KB script if the contents have not changed. Sure that might be easier, but I prefer efficiency to ease.

Calling an API and getting a 32 character MD5 checksum as the response, is far more efficient than calling the API itself and getting a 200KB response. Especially if it turns out to be the same 200KB response it gave you last time.

e.g.

https://api.guildwars2.com/md5.json?api=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.guildwars2.com%2Fv1%2Fmaps.json

It would be very simple to implement, you pass a urlencoded api URL to the MD5 API, it loads the script on the ANet servers, hashes the results and sends you the hash instead of the full json response. You compare the hash to the version you’ve cached, if it’s different, you download the full 200KB.

It could be further optimized if ANet stored timestamp and update information with the hashes it gives out, and you could then call and API and just get changes to the response since the hash to parse, rather than the entire response.

e.g.

https://api.guildwars2.com/v1/items.json?hash=32bhgdfyh125abhrfhj67k0dvns15d4g

I’ve been considering making a project using some of the API’s, but I’d cache the output to prevent unnecessary calls to the API

A lot of the API results contain a lot of data.

Downloading and parsing that data is pointless if I’ve already cached the output and nothing has changed.

It would be nice if all api variations could have a checksum to identify the content output, without actually calling the particular api

i.e.

I have a script that uses the items api, I see from the build id, that the build has changed but don’t know if it’s just a bug fix, or new items have been added.

Instead of calling the items api and parsing everything again, I call the checksum api to see if the items output has actually changed from when I last called it.

This would also be useful for map details, dyes, objectives etc

Might not be the most enjoyable way to kill Aetherblades, but it’s certainly simple. As long as you’re about level 60 or over of course.

Ascalon : Hang around the cache in Vexa’s Lab (Fireheart Rise – Level 63 area) for 30mins

Shiverpeaks : Hang around the cache in Sector Zuhl (Timberline Falls – Level 53 area) for 30mins

With the new JP, the AR dungeon and multiple caches in each zone, Kryta and Maguuma ought to be pretty easy to achieve (even without the projectors)

The word achievement simply means `The act of accomplishing or finishing`. Inferring that the deed that has been finished must be a worthy deed that took skill, is not required in order to use the word achievement correctly.

If ANet sets us the task of ‘Gather 20 raw materials’ and we complete that task, we have achieved the task of gathering 20 raw materials. Whether that task was hard or not is irrelevant, the word achievement is still being used correctly.

They would be using the term incorrectly if they were called Feats (defined as `a notable achievement`), but they are not. So some of them are not notable, so what?

Just because some game makers have chosen to use the word achievement to correctly describe completing things that could be described as feats, that doesn’t make it wrong for other game makers to correctly use the word achievement to describe the completion of given tasks.

As for general purpose of this thread, it seems like the OP is arguing about daily achievements in the context of ‘leader-board ranks’, and the majority of other posters are arguing about them in terms of the new achievement reward system. Which makes sense based on where this thread was posted.

A couple of simple truths, are that most players don’t care about achievement ranks, and most players don’t complete 15 dailies every day. The only players who bother to complete more than 5 PVE dailies and-or 4 PVP dailies, are players who are chasing this leader-board the OP refers to, and players that have a touch of OCD. The vast majority actually stop once they have achieved the laurel and reward chest(s), and do other things.

You want to have an AP leader-board that doesn’t reflect achievement points from dailies? Ask ANet for other AP based leader-boards.

e.g.

Top Achievement Points
Top Achievement Points (No Dailies)
Top Achievement Points (PVE – No Dailies)
Top Achievement Points (WVW – No Dailies)
Top Achievement Points (PVP – No Dailies)
…etc.

Why should other players lose out on cosmetic rewards that they have earned (according to the rules that were set out at the time), so that a minority of players can have different looking leader-boards?

Why don't risen attack pets?

in Ranger

Posted by: Kaz.5430

Kaz.5430

This is the new pet AI ‘improvement’ to keep your pet alive longer. Your pet no longer draws agro from a monster that’s not agrod on the player (to avoid the pet pulling distant monster). Your pet also now attempts to take a position behind the monster and stay alive longer. This basically means ‘you’ are now the primary target and not your pet.

Hilarious new pet bug this patch

in Ranger

The flip side to this change, is that if you previously used your pet to draw the agro so that you could position yourself the the side or behind a target and make use of the crossfire bleed, you’re screwed. The pet now takes your previous spot behind the target and survives (a little longer), while the target instead attacks you head on nullifying your bleeds and previous ability to pass some of the agro onto your pet.

You get less rewards from the easier mode with rainbow clouds. I can’t remember where I read it (probably in a thread on here or on dulfy.net somewhere) you get bauble bubbles as a boss chest reward in normal mode, but just get plain old baubles in easy mode.

Please don't make SAB permanent

Kaz.5430

ArenaNet divide the developers into teams. The guys working on SAB haven’t taken development away from other parts of the game, because they were not tasked with working on those parts to begin with. There are only so many developers that can work on one project at a time before things start to get confused.

Just look at the notes for the latest patch. They’ve managed to do a lot of work on Primary Game bug fixes, Living Story, WvW, PvP, Balancing, Guild Content, Leaderboards AND create SAB at the same time.

The chests out in the open world (e.g. outside the SAB) were for April fools only.

The chests in each zone inside the SAB after killing the boss should still be there.

It might be the case that they can only be looted once per chest per day though. I read it was once per character per chest per day, but that could have been wrong, and it’s actually once per account per chest per day.

Little survey about the new minipets.

Why do people bother making these little forum surveys? They don’t get a full answer, because the only people that tend to post in them, are those that agree with the OP, and have been moaning about whatever the survey is about. Nothing will change as a result of this thread, ANet create official surveys in game if they need to know something.

Do you have any documentation for that claim?
Also I didn’t mention wanting to change anything (That would destroy the legitimacy of hearing other peoples opinions)

3 million players, 646 views, 19 posts (17 if you remove the two without votes), all ‘vote’ posts agree with you.

Of the people that read your post, 3% replied (all agreeing). Of the players of the game 0.02% read your post and 0.00006% posted a ‘vote’.

This thread in itself is documentation of my point.

Kicked from BC Tixx w/o looting chest

in Wintersday

Leablo, in that case you ‘have’ lost those items You never mentioned that you’d opened the chest and had the green items in the unclaimed loot window. My response was assuming that you’d been booted by the selfish instance owner leaving the party before opening the chest, and thus your daily chest ‘trigger’ was not yet logged by the game

By opening it, you would have triggered whatever code logs whether or not the chest has been opened today. The system had awarded you the items, but you didn’t have the space for them. You’re example is one of the few ways the auto-boot when instance owner leaves the group could actually cause a loss of the daily loot

Alternative ways to get Embellished Jewels?

in Crafting

Posted by: Kaz.5430

Kaz.5430

Niodyne, it depends on your definition of ‘cost to make them’. If you run around playing the game, mine the nodes yourself and salvage the ectos yourself, then the components for the embellished jewels have not actually cost anything. Not everybody buys the materials from the TP, and not everybody thinks to sell the individual components and make better money.

The jewels created via the karma recipes are also a good sources of experience, and can help level you up, so people are going to make them (whether they need one or not). However, they are upgrades and can’t be salvaged, so if you don’t need them yourself, all you can do is sell them or give them away.

Remove twilight

in Crafting

the glitch is that Legendaries were never possible to be sold on the TP, even though they are BoE, the option to sell them via the TP was never possible.

however recently in the wintersday patch Twilight, The Moot and Incinerator can all be found in the TP listing.

most likely a bug with the system.

Did you actually have a legendary in your inventory, that you had not yet equipped, and try unsuccessfully to list it on the TP? Or are you just making a statement based on wishes and assumptions?

If you did fail to list an unbound Legendary, then ‘that’ was the bug.

Get the Toy Frames at Lion Arch?

in Wintersday

Now the question is, can we get a second one somehow, so we can make the endless tonics?

I don’t think so. As they said you’d only be able to make 2 minis if you did all the dungeons. You don’t get the first-time-finished reward anymore, even after the daily reset.

Unless something was changed last night after I ran day 3, you do still get a better dungeon chest reward every 24 hours. It’s not based on 1st run through, it’s based on a 24 hour dungeon reset (which probably occurs at midnight PST like usual, rather than 10am PST). The ‘day’ might change, but it’s still the same chest. If you don’t get the reward, it’s because you’ve already got it from the previous dungeon, wait until later and run it again.
