Cast time vs delay – it takes 1/4th of a second to actually perform the attack, 1 second-ish between attacks (the delay). The 1/4th second to perform the attack is why pets can’t hit a moving target.

Here’s to hoping we get something to address the times when pets CAN’T be used. There are more times than this, but these two have happened to me in the past day.

Claw of Jormag and other events of that nature – pet won’t attack shards OR the dragon.

Keep defense – can’t attack while defending, and is in fact a liability.

I lose my target too – @1080P resolution, and probably combined with being fairly close to a 41" TV. I would love for some way to increase the size, make the color more bold, or perhaps have an animation on it that could help keep it visible.

I find it particularly annoying in WvW. I am defending on a parapet and can see scores of baddies below. The only way for me to hit these enemies is to stand on TOP of the protective walling….thats not how castles work at all. However, the attackers, who cannot even see me, can put their AoE ‘ring’ half way up the wall and hit everyone from the walls edge to the back of the parapet, this is totally counter-intuitive to the so called advantage that defending a wall should have.

I should get

a) a LoS advantage
b) a height advantage
c) a damage mitigation for being behind a few feet of stone

Instead, I am obstructed, clumped up and AoE able by targets I cannot target.

Yeah they got it backwards in this game. It’s easier to shoot up than it is to shoot down, which makes no sense. Not to mention you risk getting scorpion wired if you go near the ledge. No surprise there, given how they’ve handled the AOE cap situation where it’s also completely backwards, where if people turtle together will actually counter AOE.

I also find it ironic that you’ll need line of sight for Barrage. Isn’t not requiring line of sight the whole point in raining down arrows onto people? You’re just shooting into the air and letting gravity do the work…

You leave sense out of this! Sense, reason, and logic have NO PLACE HERE!

This is a very well written account from a thief on his methods and how to avoid sudden death. His tips against a thief, in order of importance:
Don’t travel alone
Get some toughness and vit into your build
Don’t be a Ranger. Seriously, I have never met a ranger that I couldn’t kill, I’m not sure if I have simply never met a good one, but they seem almost universally incapable of providing any sort of threat or defense against a thief.

We’re the laughing stock of every class. Nov 15th can’t get here fast enough, and I hope it doesn’t disappoint.

I never used it once because, I know —- shocker —- I believed the tooltip. DEATH is not the same as DOWNED. Man, this stuff pisses me off. I guess the only option at this point is for us to literally beta-test every single ability and make our own tooltips.

I was wondering… I didn’t think it could just be my imagination.

I would always suggest this to people – play the class that kicks the crap out of you to learn how to counter it. However, after taking my own advice, I don’t know that there’s enough ways for you to counter a 1v1 thief who a) knows how to play and b) is spec’d to kill you. The number of gap closers and stuns available is absurd – coupled with high damage and targeting / culling technical issues, I don’t see there being a viable, consistent defense against a good thief.

In the same vein, has anyone ever gone out of a keep portal, dropped quickness, sharpening stone, and then LB #5 (barrage?), ducked back in the keep, and then suddenly take a wall of damage after you’re back inside?

I just don’t understand retaliation working on a skill like that. I know you can just say “MAAAAaaaaaaaaAAAAGIC!”, but it seems stupid to me. If I lay a trap and someone trips it with retaliation up, I simply shouldn’t take the damage.

Yes, and it also causes you to lose your target, and due to the large number of combatants in WvW, it can be nearly impossible to regain your target.

My level 9 Thief just kited 3 level 12 mobs with the shortbow, including one veteran, and I took one hit. All I can say is OMG. It’s actually fun to play the thief all the time – having 4 useful skills available all the time unless I spammed the crap out of them was a blast.

As opposed to my ranger, where I use my available non/utility abilities and sit there auto-attacking for 15 seconds….

To the people who are worried about things being changed and hating it – the person with 2 fingers on their hand who suddenly has 5 fingers will have to change things up. But it will be better. Right now, we’re just MISSING UTILITIES, by both omission and brokenness.

JP came out and said as much, and now has said “a few bug fixes”, which is causing much consternation.

Okay, I have to call bullocks on the idea that the scaling works well. I brought a mesmer in with the best possible equipment – can’t remember the exact level, but it was the first level that there are green items. Level 11 I think…. Anywho, he was completely power stacked to the limit that is humanly possible.

I went to WvW and tried to kill a deer. It was an epic, 3-4 minute battle. The same mob on my ranger would have died in 7-8 seconds. The scaling problem probably goes away gradually, but at lower levels it’s INSANELY bad.

Telling new players that they’re currently at “level 80 equivalent” is a horrible mistake, and will likely make them think that they either don’t know how to play the game or that something else is ridiculously wrong.

If someone is on a keep wall, a few feet back, why does my “master of the longbow” not put a teensy bit of arc on the shot? I mean, a dummy might try to line-drive it through the lip of the massive stone wall, but that’s about it.

Is it within the capabilities of the game mechanics to have an auto-attack be able to have the button held down, changing the arc of the shot? This would be similar to adjusting the power/distance on siege equiment.

Any suggestions for a re-roll?

I think it would be wise for JP to release a list of the committed fixes. Time to mull these over would do everyone good. Some people would freak out, but they’re the same people who will freak out when it’s actually released anyway. Get it over with, and then the rest of us who are rational, thinking beings can start to strategize how our builds will change.

Honestly, if the changes are already in testing, then it’s likely that they’ll be delivered. Give us a bone to chew on til we actually get them.

So I bit the bullet. I quit complaining, crafted a full set of Carrion exotic armor (sans the jewelry – I’m not made of gold!), grabbed an exotic short bow with Superior Sigil of Earth, and respecced. And then got stuck.

What are the options for condition damage? Trapper? Axe/Shortbow? I’d like to hear what some of the best condition builds and their associated play styles. I end up doing a 70/30 split of WvW / PvE, with the WvW mostly being in smaller groups. Zergs are…. you know, zergy.

It doesn’t matter if they’re not agro or not – THEY STILL AGRO – they just don’t fight back. And our pets have the godawful tendency to run off, or keep walking another 10-15 feet past where you stop. I’m the master of these animals, and yet I can’t STOP one from coming out? Right. It doesn’t work from a RP standpoint or a ahmahgad, why did it path over there standpoint.

The proof is in the pudding – my Mesmer is up to level 27, and my ranger has been logged in to gather some mats, and that’s it.

You know, it’s not so much that this broke rangers entirely. It’s more that this gave me an opportunity to look behind the curtain and realized all the things I was struggling with weren’t simply a “I need to learn to play this complex, intricate character”.

Long bow [OBSTRUCTED] or [OUT OF RANGE] between 30% to 40% of the time for someone clearly neither – DPS destroying bug.

Pet stopping and pausing before every attack – DPS destroying bug.

One handed sword rooting me, resulting in “OMG DODGE YOU FOOL!” – splat – BUG.

And they have the gigantic steel balls to come in here and say “Oh, you were spamming 1 too much on your Short bow – sorry about lying to you about it in the patch notes”.

I call bollucks.

Hey hey everyone – let’s not let this get ugly. I spent time I could have been leveling up my new Mesmer on making that video! I don’t want to get the topic locked =/

I just realized what would make a better video – me on my mesmer, walking around in circles hitting a veteran bear that was a level above me and I never got hit one time, no speed buffs or anything. Just every time it goes to swing at me, it has to stop and think about it for 3/4ths of a second, during which time, I just saunter out of the way =P

Forgive the juvenile nature of this – I’ve never fraps/video edited/etc anything before.

Long and short of it – you can experience this as a pet-type animal in the norn starting area Heart (spirit of the jaguar or something) or simply attacking an animal and strafing in a circle.

Pets need to attack while running, just like PCs do – with the exception of our 1hs attack, which has the same root problem as our pets.

Now, what else kind of proof do you need that something is wrong?

Well, I’m frapping some videos tonight to show how pets are broken. I found wonderful examples in the Norn starting area, both from the pet’s perspective and from the target’s perspective.

Spirits are quite obviously broken, so no need to document that.

I just wish they had dueling – then we could benchmark things to a T. Or that logs had better than 1 second accuracy.

Either way, I got my Mesmer up to 12 last night and it was fun. I’ll do that for a bit.

I do have to agree with the comments others have made – honesty in patch notes is vital. If this were a different demographic, that might fly. But we’re number-crunching, cause/effect finding reductionists. We’re going to find out what the outcome of a change is WAY faster than you can respin it. If you feel the DPS of the short bow was out of line, say so, and we can give you parses of its DPS compared to other weapons/classes, but when you try to pull the wool over our eyes with misdirection, it adds frustration and breeds discontent and distrust.

And therein lies the damningly frustrating part of DR – the part where you’re not sure if the RNG hates you or if you have violated the written but unreadable code of the “normal player” that Anet has established.

Anet has the right to make it however they deem fit (even if a large vocal portion of their player base disagrees), but invisible rules with drastic consequences RUIN fun.

(And as someone who has been unable to have enough gold to do more than travel/repair due to DR – no gold IS drastic)

If this system is so complicated that it takes weeks to tune…. You know what? Programmers make init files. We have ways of adjusting things, often on the fly or close to it. When we make changes, we have stat logs that monitor the changes. You know why I know? Because I’ve been a programmer for 9 years, working on things less complicated than this, and even in my line of work it would be unthinkable not to do so.

This could be changed tomorrow when you wake up, but it’s likely the bureaucracy within the company won’t let that programmer actually make the adjustment.

And the low hanging fruit – the bots that I and half the zone have reported, every day, for 12 days running? Nothing. kittenit. Not only are you screwing me over, you’re ignoring the primary channel of communication.

Happens to my ranger all the time with either bow. There seems to be a mismatch between the range-finder that shows on the action bar and whether or not the arrow will actually hit the target. You can be “out of range” and still hitting the target, but your auto-attacks won’t work.

That same event, same experience for me – made even better by it being perma-camped for the last week by 6 warrior bots. The event is completely ruined – I often can’t even get in enough damage to get past bronze, even though I’m a level 80 glass canon-spec’d ranger.

I’m frustrated that I’ve been reporting the same bots for 6 days with no change, and they’ve been in the same godforsaken spot the whole time. A mentally handicapped chimp could probably tell that 5 players teleporting around in tandem isn’t natural behavior.

If you give me a report button, for the love of all that’s holy, you’d better make it feel like that button does something or you’ll lose the most valuable reporting tool out there – YOUR LEGITIMATE PLAYERS.

I want a buff that says “You have angered your gods by ruthlessly killing <insert mob type>, and half your bounty will be taken as a sacrifice!” if I’ve been DR flagged. Sounds stupid, but then no one would have to be worried about whether they’re on a really bad luck streak or if they’ve been unknowingly flagged or bugged.

It may be a bug – it may be working as intended. The problem is that we don’t know what rule set we’re supposed to be following. If speed limit signs on the highway said “Don’t go too fast!”, and you would get a ticket if you were going “too fast”, you would ALWAYS be paranoid. You wouldn’t know if you had tripped some ephemeral wire or if there was a legitimate bug.

Anet needs to clearly dictate what the rules are, even though it will undoubtedly make their job stopping bots slightly harder. It’s what’s fair to players and will help find REAL bugs and ease players’ frustration and paranoia.

You know what is even more disconcerting? These bots teleport, fly, etc. Which means it’s only a matter of time before these exploits are used regularly in WvW / PvP.

I’m about to throw in the towel. If you don’t treat your brand new car well in the first month, I doubt you’re going to start caring later.

Lick My Wounds has an unintended consequence that people who feel it is doing nothing might have missed. When you are in a down state and your pet is still attacking, the pet can be tanking. Lick My Wounds will revive a dead pet or instantly bring your pet from wherever it is to your side. It does this by resummoning it – BUT- it is resummoned with zero aggro on the surrounding enemies, making YOU the #1 target. So, as soon as you click Lick My Wounds, the health benefit from your pet is offset by the newly directed damage at you.

Whether this is how it is intended to function in a real life scenario or not will have to be a question answered by a developer.
