Except that they didn’t, Oglaf. The dredge’s “native home” is further south than where the norn are, and on top of that, underground.

The dredge have been expanding their “native home” through force ever since they were freed from slavery. And they’re naturally xenophobic – the fighting between the two races grew because norn love challenges and the dredge, being hostile xenophobic expansionists that they became, provided that challenge.

I think it’s far more likely that dragon magic (other dragon’s magic, that is) is either considered too risky or poisonous to Elder Dragons and their magic – TBH, I think they consider each other the greatest threats, and so they wouldn’t attack each other when their own forces are so small still.

I don’t think the Consortium are behind this. They’re not evil, they don’t want to cause problems and won’t do anything that they can’t wiggle the blame off of themselves for doing. They didn’t intend karka to attack Lion’s Arch and the like, they just wanted to make money via turning Southsun Cove into a vacation spot.

The Consortium are opportunists and amoral in its finest sense. They’re like a group of Inquest that’s multi-racial and about obtaining money rather than the truth of Eternal Alchemy (and as such, don’t go torturing innocents – because that doesn’t make them money, or rather the risk is far greater than potential profit).

You can probably compare the Consortium to most high-fledged corporations of today – they’ll bribe and withhold helpful stuff just to get more money, heck they might even make a single person disappear (some would say they might have with Canach’s disappearance), but they won’t go causing mass panic and hysteria for it – too much risk should it get traced back to them.

@Aaron: I can’t really see Zojja referring to either Snaff or Kudu as a “colleague” – Snaff was her mentor, not a colleague, and Kudu’s… well, if she’s really stretching the term he’d be a colleague for her but that just seems unlikely given her personality.

Thalador did just give the possibility of the colleague being Dessa though, which is an interesting thought given the nature behind her (that she seemingly hasn’t been around for 23 years).

Interestingly, I’m having trouble picturing the Dredge and Flame Legion working together willingly. The Dredge have proven rabidly xenophobic, and the Flame Legion are never shy about merely using whatever tools come their way. Yet Dredge invaders are dropping Ritual Bags and Flame Legion are pouring out of Dredge assault vehicles . . .

I still cannot shake the idea that something is seriously amiss here.

The most dangerous animal is the one that’s been backed into a corner.

What happened to the dredge leadership (the xenophobic dredge) and the Flame Legion? They got their kitten handed to them, their leadership mostly wiped out, and then their kitten handed to them again. They’re stuck in a corner, and striking before the death blow comes.

That’s how I see it. But the two groups do have something in common that is only shared with one other race: They have history in trying to utilize destroyers as weapons (first the Flame Legion in Eye of the North, then the dredge in Sorrow’s Embrace explorable).

Even GW uses that kind of convention – see all the Verata skills, or the skills named after Canthan henchmen and ancient heroes. There’s even others like Bonetti’s Defense (Bonetti being a bandit in Ascalon that has a random chance of spawning).

I used to think Rodgort was a fire dragon/drake, under this assumption, given the depiction in the Rodgort’s Invocation skill being such, and most named skills have a figure that at least look like the named NPC to some degree (even if its as loose as general <insert race> figure).

But given the torch, I wouldn’t be surprised if the skills were either named after the torch, or the torch and skills are named after a Flame Legion charr. The head looks fairly charr-like, and its obtained via Citadel of Flame tokens.

Rata Pten points to Rata Sum being originating by asura. Rata Pten is in Mount Maelstrom, and is said to be ancient asuran ruins, which just so happen to look very similar to GW1’s Tarnished Coast ruins (and the Central Transfer Chamber’s structures).

Such structures are also seen in Straits of Devastation – near the vista southeast of Fort Trinity.

Wrong. Play through Crucible of Eternity (both story and explorable). There’s three cases (Subject Alpha, Kudu, and Kudu’s Monster) where there’s a creature corrupted by multiple Elder Dragon energies.

We don’t see it in the open world because we haven’t seen Elder Dragons interacting in the open world yet. But dragon minions can be influenced by other dragons’ energies.

Fun fact: we don’t know where said three’s alliances lie. Kudu’s obviously free willed, but Subject Alpha and Kudu’s Monster’s loyalties are unknown.

So while everyone is speculating and participating in the threats that the dredge and Flame Legion are making, me and my guildies noticed something interesting regarding the mail sent to players to inform of the update’s new content.

While norn and charr characters get mail from Eir and Rytlock respectively, requesting aid because it’s too much for them to handle, the other three races get mail from their respective DE member about how they’re busy with something else and thus can’t aid their guild members and friends with the refugee problem.

An individual who claims some preposterous connection with a former colleague of mine recently contacted me, and while his claims concerning that connection are dismissable, he does bring up a good point

Jokes about what Logan means by his girlfriend’s business aside, this is interesting to me.

Each of these three races’ racial enemies (Nightmare Court, Inquest, and Bandits) are known to be in an alliance referred to as the Sinister Triad in Brisban Wildlands – “queen’s business” may easily refer to threats to Kryta (like the bandits or, more likely due to the lack-of-mentioning, White Mantle). Zojja’s “former colleague” is also interesting; something of concern means its a threat, and there’s few threats to the asura that Zojja cares more about than the Inquest (make that “next to no threats other than ED and Inquest that she cares about” actually).

It’s most interesting that only one of these threats is blatantly named, and thinking on it – it makes a bit of sense. Zojja’s not only prideful, but the Inquest took a heavy blow with Crucible of Eternity, so she may not like to admit the Inquest may be recovering faster than she predicted. And as mentioned, the White Mantle are a bit of a hush-hush topic that’s backing the Bandits, so Logan may be ordered to make no mention of them, thus it’s just “business” – though the same can be said for investigating matters of Ministry corruption (given Krytan laws seen in Noble and Dead Sister storylines, any open proclamation against the Minister(s) must be met with heavy evidence and guilty conviction else all evidence used is to be void for any further investigation and trials (this never made sense to me) and the accuser gets sentenced, even if they’re a Seraph captain).

This makes me think that the “Sinister Triad” is stirring up trouble in the west, and may be the next story focus after Flame and Frost (beginning in, I presume, May).

Those “diabloe-esque” portals have been in the game since release. They’re just portals that the Flame Legion made (as opposed to the green ones leading to the Underworld, or the blue ones made by Icebrood/Sons of Svanir into the Mists).

Anyways, that norn… settlement? will likely be prominent in the story’s near future. If not later during this month, then next month.

Edit: What I want to know is; why should we care? We already crippled their forces and killed their leaders in Citadel of Flame and Sorrow’s Embrace. We assisted in the death of an Elder Dragon. What threat could they possibly be?

They probably wouldn’t be a threat to the Pact if they bothered getting involved – but they’re a threat to the charr and norn who aren’t in a united front against a shared enemy that’s being dredge and Flame Legion… yet.

Plus, we only managed to kill Zhaitan thanks to anti-Elder Dragon weaponry. That stuff may have the effect of shooting a rubber band when at normal folks (that’d actually be kind of funny – “This here cannon took down an Elder Dragon! You think you can stand up to it?!?” fires Enemy: “Well kitten…” enemy hit… nothing happened “HAH!” enemy slaughters Pact troops).

Take note: the magic that Elder Dragons permiate are corruptive, even to other dragon minions.

In other words, Elder Dragon 1 sending minions to go after Elder Dragon 2 risks losing minions not by being killed, but by being corrupted. And this may even occur to the Elder Dragons themselves!

And TBH, I REALLY am hating the whole ant analogy folks are using. Last time I checked, humans don’t go using ants as resources for food, soldiers, and information.

The krait have always (or as long as we know) lived on both the deepest depths and the surface directly above said deepest depths. In the Unending Ocean they built structures that stretched from the ocean’s floor to the water’s surface. So they’ve adapted to live at both shallow and deep waters, and their appearance on the water’s surface isn’t something new.

If there’s any creature which has this logical hole, it’d probably be karka – though they were once on the surface a long time ago.

Just saw the scene – the deliverer’s name is Fyr Raggedfur. He appears from Fort Marriner (not sure if from Bloodtide Coast or the Mist portals) and heads up to the NPC mentioned above, then leaves LA via Gendarran. The dialogue between the two is as followers:

Gorgonis: Everything’s here.
Gorgonis: Run into any trouble?
Fyr: Nothing I couldn’t handle. I always make a delivery.

So there’s not really much presented. And no, no quaggans popping out or sleeping in boxes…

Krait are said to live in the deepest parts of the Unending Ocean, so the karka couldn’t live in deeper waters than the krait. Incidentally, the deep sea dragon is also said to live in the deepest parts of the sea (which sea though…), so it seems to me that the krait were basically living right smack dab on top of the DSD. And it’s said that the quaggans were pushed north primarily by the krait.

So the largos and karka likely loved east or west of wherever the krait were, while the quaggan lived north of the krait. And the krait fled north from the DSD.

The jotun civil war has NOTHING to do with their reverence of jotun. That’s jotun history. The jotun chieftain that claims himself to be a giant-king was MODERN DAY in GW2. There is only one flashback in the storyline which is telling about the fall of jotun society – which is only told to the PC so the PC knows why the jotun are so eager to get power and thus go to Jormag.

The jotun society are thousands of years old (if not tens of thousands). They fell sometime after the last ED rise – they, like the seers, dwarves, mursaat, and forgotten, were around during the last ED rise. But they didn’t turn to worshiping Jormag until very recently – until the norn personal storyline. E.g., this year of GW2 (1325 AE). The Arah explorable mode is about jotun and the other races’ history; that one flashback is about jotun history; Thruln the Lost’s dialogue is about jotun history. The rest of that storyline is about modern jotun.

In other words: The flashback has nothing directly to do with Jormag and their fall was not connected to reverence to Jormag. Their fall was caused by their own greed and power where their giant-kings fought each other into extinction, leaving only primitive people who has long forgotten their past beyond that they were once a grand race and where their ancestor’s citadels lay. Their worship of Jormag is a recent development that the jotun are doing to return to their past glory – e.g., return to the power they had before they fell.

What do you mean by point 1? It was the beginning of the storyline so it wasn’t *that" long ago (the entire storyline seems to take less than a year), and the jotun definitely encountered the ED (and likely Jormag) during the first rise – and doubtful that was their first encounter of Jormag during this rise, seeing how there are jotun in the Far Shiverpeaks just like there were norn there.

Regarding point 2 – maybe that tribe, but the jotun are not a united race. And in fact, they’re a fairly competitive race – with both outsiders and each other. Just because one tribe went to Jormag doesn’t mean other won’t, but on the same note just because one tribe left Jormag doesn’t mean all others learned not to go to it. And the one tribe that did learn their lesson – if they did – only learned so much as the PC is a threat to them only if they side with Jormag. Once the PC leaves town, who knows what they were up to.

And I don’t recall anything saying that the corrupted jotun killed each other, or were killed off – let alone anything that says new corrupted jotun can’t appear.

There’s implications that there was some sort of calamity wherever the Six Gods and human race (possibly forgotten race too) came from. Beyond this, we don’t really know.

Said implications come from these lines:

She chose Tyria and brought with her those who would make this world a paradise. As she had promised, Dwayna led her people to peace.” (if she wanted to make a paradise, the old world likely wasn’t one)

“The two who are one, Issa and Lys,[sic] brought with her the hope and beauty of humanity. While the other gods focused on building Arah and beginning a new future, Lyssa gave them joy and helped them forget the past. (why need to forget the past? why would they be lacking joy without Lyssa? Who does they refer to – humans or the gods?)

“Among them was Abaddon—once secret-keeper, now betrayer. How you have fallen from the glorious days of old. What passed beyond in the Mists, only you remember. (something was forgotten that happened in the Mists; first thought would be Abaddon’s fall, but that happened on Tyria, so what was it that occurred which we hold no knowledge of? Is it the past that Lyssa helped “them” forget?)

Comes from the Orrian History Scrolls in Shelter Docks, Malchor’s Leap. These three lines make me think it was some sort of cataclysmic calamity, that the Six Gods were forced to flee and that Dwayna chose Tyria as a refuge. I suspect, given this and other info, that the forgotten were sent out as scouts for a promising world, and they arrived on Tyria by orders of the Six Gods before said Six Gods. Dwayna then brought humanity to Orr, but because of the damage of the Elder Dragons, sent them down south – leading them to slowly head north on their own per the actual timeline which claims they were not on continental Tyria until 205 BE.

Why are there risen chickens then :|

Because chicken were native to Orr. Rabbits might not have been.

You never see risen-made Risen Chickens outside of Orr (the only Risen Chicken you see outside of Orr is during the charr storyline, one of the lvl 20-30 ones, with “Mister Cluckers” who eats a Zhaitan-magic-infected amulet that turns wearers into Risen).

Also, on the topic of Icebrood Jotun: aren’t they an available path in Arah exploration mode? Which implies that they faced the tempting and luring powers of corruption before. Perhaps they’ve collectively learned their lesson and are not as likely to give in as the “younger” races?

You haven’t done all the norn storylines, have you?

Defeat Our Ancient Foes (formerly called Strength) in the bio leads to a storyline about how a jotun tribe leader is seeking to become a giant-king, having been promised power if he worships Jormag by the Sons of Svanir.

Plus, they’ve forgotten a lot of their past knowledge, so I don’t see how them having, as a race, encountered the ED matters much.

They don’t seem to want to destroy the world as much as they want to change the world to fit their nature, i.e Orr being riddled with undeath and The Brand being riddled with Branded Crystals.

This actually has plausibility to it – during The Source of Orr story step, the Sovereign Eye of Zhaitan talks about how we are trying to poison Orr.

Zhaitan’s minions – if not Zhaitan or even other ED/their minions – seem to view us as damaging the world when we try to undo Zhaitan’s work. This presents the view that the ED – who give the mentality to their minions – see themselves as fixing the world.

TBH, I think the charr were horrible enemies until Eye of the North. They were, for all we knew and for all that was presented, just some very primitive warmongering race that sought to ravage humanity. We didn’t learn about Ascalon being charr’s first (BTW, Ascalon is NOT the original charr homeland – the original charr homeland is east of the Blazeridge – charr conquered Ascalon from someone else, then got conquered by humans) until about a year after Eye of the North – when GW1’s story was said and done (at that time).

The charr story in GW1 was about as interesting as a story about man’s survival in the wilderness – the villain doesn’t matter for didly squat in the story itself, because it’s just a no-reasoning-with beast that wants nothing more than to kill you for xyz reason (food, territory, w/e).

In that regard, the Elder Dragons is much more interesting than the charr of GW1 – not the charr as presented in GW2 mind you, and arguably not as presented in Eye of the North (which only came about due to thoughts of GW2), but as of Prophecies certainly so!

“Coming back to Guild Wars 2, we are given Dragons. Are they big, evil, mean Dragons that want to take over the world? Not really. They just wake up and destroy most life on the planet for no real reason what so ever. Then they go back to sleep. Wash, rinse, repeat.”

That is a very narrow minded view on the Elder Dragons. Rather than explaining why, I’ll simply link to an old thread which I believe proves you wrong (side note: said thread was originated by a post of mine to avoid going off-topic in the thread of said original post). Side note: both cases are very old and very outdated as we’ve found other bits of lore since then… I’m actually thinking of giving a new view on the matter, but I’ve been waiting on Frost and Flames to reveal if its tied to destroyers and icebrood or not. But to highlight some key points:

  1. They’re not out to destroy the world, as Oglaf says, but to corrupt it – and by effect consume magic in the world. They each seem to hold their own reasons for doing such just as much as they have their own methods.
  2. Your view seems to be solely based off of the view of the races of Tyria. Take note that Guild Wars 2 presents lore in a subjective, rather than objective like much of GW1, manner. This means that the viewpoint presented in interviews before release and the view they represented – that of the races of Tyria like humans, charr, norn, quaggan, etc. – is just that they can’t find any reasoning behind it. As Oglaf says, they’re fairly lovecraftian in this regard. The ED are related to natural disasters which hold no reasoning or purpose and just “are” because that’s how the major races view the Elder Dragons. But later in the storyline, you find out this view is wrong – the Elder Dragons do have intelligence. They do have emotions (fear and anger are two prime examples presented in the storyline), and they do have unique methodology and actions differencing themselves from others more than just their element.
  3. Contradictory to both you and Oglaf, I’d say the Elder Dragons view the races as more than mere ants. The races are resources to them – they are food, they are minion materials, and they are information sources. Zhaitan would have just about nothing without his army of undead, solely dependent on the existence of the races. Jormag focuses his expansion through the Sons of Svanir, an impossible feat without the races of Tyria. Primordus, who seems bent on killing all life rather than corrupting it, is really the only Elder Dragon who can view the living races as mere ants – but even that doesn’t seem the case since he seems to be proactively wiping them out (you don’t go about proactively wiping out all ants on the world, just those in your home).

Also, about the “having coffee with Zhaitan” joke (I presume it’s a joke), I just can’t see that happening. That’s like telling us to go and try to negotiate with the big bad villain sitting in his Tower of Doom in the middle of the Death Plains that does nothing but send his mindless Goblin Army to attack, maim, pillage, kill, and kidnap innocent villages. You’re not going to just sit and talk things over – they don’t do that. The only way those figures discuss something is after you beat the crap out of them and they beg for mercy from the goodie-two-shoes hero, they beat the crap out of you and start gloating, or they’re negotiating ransom for someone they kidnapped/something they’re threatening to do. Are these villains “poor story writing”? No, they’re just archetypal.

1) Maybe rabbits weren’t indiginous to Orr and they’re too weak to bother making risen out of.
2) For other dragon minions, there’s a severe lack of model variety among them. Most icebrood you face are norn, and there’s only a total of five races (off the top of my head) that’re icebrood-ified (norn, quaggan, kodan, wolves, and trolls). If you think about it logically, there should be icebrood/branded wurms and grawl, branded harpies, and icebrood jotun as well as others. This is likely due to these minions not being a prominent focus of the storyline yet, and we’ll likely see many more – especially icebrood grawl and jotun since there are some of both which flock to Jormag – when they do become the prominence.

I wonder if it would be possible for them to build a duplicate, clean Orr that, when you go to “Orr,” runs a check to see if the character has completed Arah story mode. If you have, it takes you to that version of Orr instead. If you want to go to old Orr, you can take an experimental Asura gate back there to “study the dragon corruption to help fight the other dragons” or whatever.

No, I absolutely do not expect that to actually happen and do not think it’s practical due to the setup of the game, I’m just curious if it’s even a remote possibility with the way the game is made.

I’m sure it could be done though with a lot of time and resources spent, however, it won’t be – why? splits the player base. Plus, asura gates aren’t time traveling devices. :I Also, it’d probably be too resource/time consuming to make for the profit of having a second version of Orr.

And if they really wanted a corruption-free Orr, they could have presented such in the Arah dungeon – only a small portion of the explorable version is seen in the story version (the first part).

But you see, nodes don’t disappear. Their appearance does, showing something as harvestable or harvested, but the pathing and placement is the same for everyone. So unless they have it so that everything is exactly the same but with new textures, then they can’t alter the landmass in a similar way.

Those giant corals will have to remain, or replaced by trees or some such of the exact same shape, placement, and size. Those building ruins can’t be changed unless something new gets put in the same places which are also the same size and shape.

Doing such is not only barely reasonable, but not very realistic that despite it looking different, it’s the exact same – especially with how even with different appearances, you’ll be having the same exact events and spoken dialogue (since those are server based). So even if they do simply change all the textures, there will still be hundreds of risen praising Zhaitan and dozens of Pact soldiers saying how they’re going to bring Zhaitan down and how he’s still a threat. That’s more immersion breaking than those three zones permanently stuck in the timeline before Zhaitan’s defeat.

@Olaf Egon Wein, LOL! It’s perhaps the most exquisite race I’ve seen in any game to date. Just pathetic, how about some elucidation to validate you’re claims as to why they’re an aion knock off/massafail. Dark elves? Since it has pointy ears so it must be an elf…. Ha idiotic! Now if you think they’re wings you’re obviously suffering some severe brain damage, those are fins quite honestly I must say, what an utter laughable excuse for trolling I have ever seen.

Dark Elves: It’s not just the ears. It’s the dark skin tone, the white flowing hair (on a deep-sea creature? REALLY? hah!), the hyperfemine and hypermasculine male and female bodies, and the fetish armor. They resemble dark elves and/or night elves to a great degree—their design, from their colors, to their ears, to their sexuality—screams cliched evil fantasy elf. Metal fetish armor and humanoid body types are NOT what you should find on something that lives underwater.

Wings: Those bulky butterfly wings would actually PREVENT a creature from swimming. The lore excuse that they’re fins is rediculous and easy to see through. The designers can’t implement air-combat, but corny aion wings and butterfly fairies are in high demand among kid gamers. So, they slapped some butterfly wings on something and then called them fins. The intention wasn’t to be creative or design a functional sea race—it was to suck in a certain player demographic. As a result, those things growing out of the Largos’s backs aren’t remotely belivable on a sea race.

While I disagree, I could understand the dark elf analogy.

However, I greatly disagree with your “wings” – since, as you yourself show, their appearance is that of mantra ray fins (in texture, thickness, and mobility while swimming) that is placed on the body akin to wings. The idea of wings – especially butterfly wings – being used underwater indeed doesn’t make sense… until you see their swimming animation. If you really want to hold to your “wings aren’t realistic for living underwater” you should explain how the swimming animation doesn’t work, because it does kitten well.

Also, there’s one massively major flaw in your claim. If they were made to suck in an age demographic, then they’d be more prominent. They’re greatly hidden in the lore – things made to bring in certain demographic groups are often more prominent and obvious. It’s entirely possible to play through 90% of the game without ever knowing of largos (up to the Orr storyline, and in almost every zone, even the five zones which have largos in them).

It depends on where they go – but most go to their “rightful resting place” as a reward for their actions or devotion, etc. etc.

I imagine these places are different to the areas of the Mists we visit in GW2. Is it possible – lore-wise – for somebody to enter these areas and leave again?

These places are – as far as we know – including the Underworld, Fissure of Woe, Realm of Torment, Hall of Heroes, Great Forge, Eternal Paradise, and Sky Above the Sky.

The first four we personally visit – and return from – in GW1. Only one of these places are seen in GW2 – the Underworld, or rather a subsection of the Underworld known as the Mad Realm (but presented to us as Mad King’s Realm).

The Underworld functions as a place for followers of Grenth as well as a general afterlife. For example, the Ice Wastes is where followers of Grenth go, the Chaos Planes is where those who were without valor or honor go, the Forgotten Vale seems to be a general village of souls, and the Mad Realm seems to be where the insane go (the afterlife’s personal asylum – which Thorn took over). It also seems like all souls enter the Underworld and are sent their merry way to another afterlife after Grenth judged where they go – unless they were deemed to remain in the Underworld.

The Fissure of Woe seems to mainly be where warriors, heroes, adventurers and overall those who lived a life of fighting go. The Hall of Heroes is where the greatest champions and heroes go. The Realm of Torment is more or less unknown for who usually goes there, as for the last 1,075 years prior to GW1 it was used as a prison for all things related to Abaddon, and since then has become Kormir’s realm with no knowledge of how it may have changed.

The Great Forge is said to be the dwarves’ afterlife, and the Sky Above the Sky is said to be the tengu’s afterlife. Eternal Paradise we only know by name, mentioned by Canthans.

Something I’m suprised Konig didn’t mention is that when a mortal dies, an envoy appears to escort the soul to the Mists. As far as I’m aware there is no in-game explanation as to why they don’t take ghosts…
This was learnt via Guild Wars: Factions, and Shiro using his powers as an envoy to create the Shiro’ken and Afflicted onto Cantha.

EDIT: Some things to note are that all of the envoys we saw were humanoid (if not human completely) so we don’t know if this stands for the other races…. Only the Oracle of the Mists could tell us more, and considering we are unlikely to visit Cantha any time soon, and have no idea of the fate of that individual, I can’t answer the likely questions this brings up with races like the Charr/Asuran.

I didn’t mention envoys because that’s a Cantha-only thing. The Envoys are assigned the role by the Oracle of the Mists, who dwells in Cantha, as a means to help send restless souls to the afterlife. I presume that this is why in GW1, Cantha was lacking ghosts – especially compared to Tyria and Elona. Wars are pretty much breeding grounds for ghosts by all appearances (the most common places to see ghosts are war-torn(ed) lands in GW1). The only ghosts we saw in Cantha were those in Tahnnakai Temple, that one Shing Jea Ritualist mentor, and the envoys – all of which were brought back to Tyria by a ritualist (the Oracle of the Mists is a powerful ritualist who employs the souls of criminals to do this job – it’s a volunteer job too, as Shiro refused the offer for 200 years).

Based on GW1?

When you die, if you were an exceptionally powerful and devoted servant, you go to Balthazar’s eternal battlegrounds. There you become an Eternal (a specific form of ghost) and fight the eternal war against the forces of Menzies, his half-brother.

Otherwise you go to Grenth’s Underworld until you “pass on”. Here you need to somehow earn the right to move onwards. There’s an entire village of ghosts waiting, and Dhuum . . . the old god of death . . . has servants who still plague the place and try to make it a more tormented experience.

I don’t think that the Forgotten Vale village are of waiting souls. The Reaper of the Labyrinth tells us to take new souls intending to devote themselves to Grenth to that village, and we’re told by enslaved heroes in the Fissure of Woe that they’ll go to Grenth to receive their judgement and their proper resting place. The Underworld is, except to devotees of Grenth and other special cases (insane folks, honorless folks, etc.), like the afterlife’s terminal – they go there to get their train ticket from Grenth to the destination of Grenth’s choosing.

Whether this applies to other races is unknown though.

Thats why I said enslaved and not corrupted. What I mean is that if! primordus works together with dredge it won’t be for the dredges best interest but his own. With enslaved I mean it is up to him what to do with them when he is done with them.

For Elder Dragons, corrupting is enslaving. But either way, you didn’t say “if” before so I thought you meant that you thought it was the case. :P

Souls can become ghosts, but, to me, that seems to be fairly rare unless some magical cataclysm happens (like the Foefire). More often, they wind up in the Mists somewhere. Not sure where most go, but the Hall of Heroes (an area in the Mists) from GW1 was for exceptionally brave/strong spirits.

“Soul” and “Ghost” are interchangable in Guild Wars.

What you mean, however, is whether the soul remains in Tyria or moves on to the Mists. But they can be common – souls remain in Tyria if there’s any powerful emotion from their life – like the atypical “unfinished business” standard ghost stories have, but can also be immense hatred, love, and so forth for people, places, or things. Most ghosts, especially those of people who died in cataclysmic events, linger because they died so quickly. The Foefire is unique though, since that acted as a brainwashing event that forced souls to remain in Tyria (there wasn’t an option for humans).

Any idea what these souls do in the mists? Do they serve a purpose for anyone or anything, or just do nothing?

It depends on where they go – but most go to their “rightful resting place” as a reward for their actions or devotion, etc. etc.

Well, we already know one thing: the dredge, thanks to the Inquest, previously gained control of a powerful destroyer – the Destroyer of Worlds. This was seen in one of the Sorrow’s Embrace explorable paths, though the means of controlling said destroyer, and the destroyer itself, was said to be destroyed. It is obvious that the dredge view that the destroyers can be turned into weapons.

However, all other interaction between destroyer and dredge results in the destroyers wiping the floor with dredge corpses (and the same goes for destroyer and all other lifeforms).

So destroyers/Primordus won’t willingly cooperate with dredge for all we’ve seen. The only Elder Dragon shown to cooperate (and I use the term loosely) with something else is Jormag with the Sons of Svanir.

Also, I disagree on you saying Primordus wants to enslave dredge – he’s shown no intention of corrupting living beings. Instead, he seems interested only in killing off all living beings. And before you bring up the Destroyer Queen and the eggs from the skritt racial sympathy storyline – the mentor only speculates that it could be a corrupted creature, and those eggs are hatching not just destroyer crab hatchlings, but also full grown destroyer crabs and, I think, destroyer trolls too. The eggs just seem to be portable versions of the only known means destroyers are made – pools of lava.

They didn’t live in the deepest parts of the ocean – unlike the krait, karka, and largos. While they were fairly close to all three races, their life in the Unending Ocean was mostly void of krait interaction (who lived in the deepest parts and directly above to the surface) according to the one quaggan that mentions there being an Elder Dragon’s force in the Unending Ocean, and they had limited interaction with the karka and largos on top of that. Furthermore, the “horrors” mentioned existing in the Unending Ocean (most likely) refers to the DSD and its minions (called horrors by largos, and “scary things” by quaggan).

But still, given all indications, to me it seems like they filled the role animals like rabbits fulfill – they’re nature’s prey for nature’s predators.

There are kodan in Frostgorge Sound that say the Elder Dragons may be answers to bringing the world back into balance (by resetting the world, basically, is how I take that kodan view) – and others that say they’re a manifestation of imbalance.

If either case is correct, I’d link it to what the Elder Dragons do first and foremost: consume magic (their corruption is just a means to do such easier). To which I’d argue the reason they manifest – regardless of how – would be to reduce the levels of magic. Seeing how they’ve wiped the world clean before, though failed their last rising, which would mean that they devoured all accessible magic, the levels of magic must be rising over time. So they could be an answer nature produced to lower levels of magic in the world.

So what you’re saying is that Zhaitan’s corpse is present in the cutscenes in Arah story – before his death?

That’s just aesthetic concept art used to make those cinematics more flavorful, and they’re different based on the location (zone, city, and dungeon). But both story and explorable of Arah share the same background piece.

Magic makes sense in this case, TBH. The helicopters – just like the improved submarines and airships – are made by the Pact using multiple races’ technology (specifically charr, human, and asura). The asura – and to a lesser degree, humans – have a lot of levitating structures, so using that kind of magic in conjunction with charr propulsion systems could be keeping it afloat and stable.

It’d only be a matter of time – as far as they’re concerned – before they go from “slows them down” and “hinders them” to “removes them completely.”
